First expedition to Titanic shipwreck in 14 years to be conducted by unmanned ROVs after Titan sub tragedy

An orange coloured supply ship vessel docked at a port

The first voyage to the Titanic is being undertaken in 14 years, and the first since the "experimental" Titan submersible sent to the ship last year ended in a deadly implosion.

RMS Titanic Inc, the company which owns the rights to salvage the shipwreck, is conducting the mission, which aims to provide comprehensive analysis of the wreckage condition.

What's next?

Titanic Expedition 2024 is expected to take several weeks and the vessel involved is slated to return to Rhode Island on August 13.

The company that owns the salvage rights to the Titanic is undertaking its first expedition to the ship's wreckage in years, seeking to expand research and honour the legacy of those killed in a submersible disaster en route to the wreck site in 2023.

RMS Titanic Inc, a Georgia-based firm, commenced the Titanic Expedition 2024 from Providence in the US state of Rhode Island on Friday, its first in 14 years.

The voyage arrives in the wake of the deadly implosion of the Titan experimental submersible in June last year, which killed all five people on board, including French deep sea explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, who was director of underwater research for RMS Titanic.

RMST Inc president Jessica Sanders said this year's mission to the ship "means even more with the passing" of Mr Nargeolet, known as "Mr Titanic" by many, and those involved in the mission have both heavy hearts and lofty goals. He made more than 35 dives to the Titanic in his lifetime.

The weeks-long expedition will involve world-leading deep ocean imaging experts, oceanographers, scientists, and historians who will use remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to survey the wreckage.

The bow of the RMS Titanic.

It will use modern imaging technology to study deterioration and preserve the state of the site digitally, while also discover new areas of the debris field and areas "which could provide unobstructed access to the interior of the ship".

The work will allow the company to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current condition of the Titanic wreckage site, comparison to imagery taken in 2010, and a detailed assessment of artefacts that can be safely targeted for future recovery.

"This monumental undertaking will allow us to document the Titanic in unprecedented detail and share new discoveries from the wreck site with the public, continuing the extraordinary work and passion of PH [Paul-Henri]," Ms Sanders said

The expedition will include "the highest resolution camera systems ever deployed at the site in an effort to bring new insights about the ship to the community," said Evan Kovacs, an underwater cinematographer working on the mission.

Titanic's wreckage is located about 560km off the coast of Newfoundland in Canada in the North Atlantic Ocean, where it sank in 1912.

The ship headed to the site, Dino Chouest, will take several days to reach the location and is slated to return around August 13. People involved in the mission will remain onboard while two unmanned ROVs are deployed below.

'Experimental' journey gone wrong

Debris from the Titan submersible recovered from the ocean floor.

Along with Mr Nargeolet, the Titan implosion also killed OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, Pakistani father-and-son Shahzada and Suleman Dawood, and British adventurer Hamish Harding.

Ocean Gate, which owned the submersible, has since suspended operations, while a high-level investigation into the incident led by the US Coast Guard remains ongoing.

The company behind the "experimental" Titan had reportedly been warned about safety concerns but still took passengers to the depths of the North Atlantic.

But despite the doomed Titanic continuing to capture public fascination even more than a century on from its sinking, only a rare few have the money, the risk appetite and the special access to participate in a deep sea voyage to the wreckage site.

OceanGate ran exclusive tours to the ship's wreckage after successful runs in 2021 and 2022, appealing as tourism for the uber-luxurious.

The company says it is believed that fewer than 200 people have seen the shipwreck in person

RMS Titanic Inc. has conducted eight research expeditions to the wreck site since 1987 , with this year's being the ninth, and with its legal salvage rights possesses exclusivity to recover artefacts from the site.

The Georgia-based company that owns the salvage rights to the Titanic is undertaking its first expedition to the ship’s wreckage in years, and those involved in the mission said they have both heavy hearts and lofty goals for a trip happening a year after a submersible disaster involving another firm killed five people.

RMS Titanic Inc ., a Peachtree Corners-based firm, holds the legal rights to salvage the wreck of the ship, which sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in 1912. The company’s first expedition to the site since 2010 launched Friday from Providence, Rhode Island.

The voyage arrives as the worldwide community of undersea explorers is still reeling from the deadly implosion of an experimental submersible en route to the Titanic in June 2023. The Titan submersible disaster killed all five people on board, including Paul-Henri Nargeolet, who was director of underwater research for RMS Titanic.

This summer’s mission to the Titanic “means even more with the passing” of Nargeolet, known as “Mr. Titanic” by many, RMST Inc. president Jessica Sanders said.

The expedition will use modern imaging technology and remotely operated vehicles to capture detailed images of the Titanic, the wreckage site and the debris field, RMST Inc. representatives said.

“This monumental undertaking will allow us to document the Titanic in unprecedented detail and share new discoveries from the wreck site with the public, continuing the extraordinary work and passion of PH,” Sanders said.

The ship headed to the site, the Dino Chouest, will take several days to reach the site and is slated to return around Aug. 13, said Jon Hammond, a spokesperson for RMST Inc.

The work will allow the company to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current condition of the Titanic wreckage site and a detailed assessment of artifacts that can be safely targeted for future recovery, RMST Inc. representatives said.

Nargeolet made more than 35 dives to the Titanic in his lifetime. The implosion also killed Titan operator Stockton Rush; two members of a prominent Pakistani family, Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son Suleman Dawood; and British adventurer Hamish Harding.

OceanGate, a company co-founded by Rush that owned the submersible, suspended operations a year ago. The U.S. Coast Guard convened a high-level investigation into what happened, but it has taken longer than expected and it’s unclear when the investigation will conclude.

Undersea explorers are waiting to learn the results of the investigation and RMST Inc.’s trip to the Titanic site is an important milestone in the site’s exploration, said Katy Croff Bell, founder of the Ocean Discovery League.

“The Coast Guard investigation is still ongoing and they have not released their results yet, so the final chapter in this episode has yet to come out,” Bell said. “One thing that has come out is there is perhaps more interest.”

This month’s journey to the Titanic also will allow comparison to 2010 imaging, RMST Inc. representatives said. The mission also may result in the discovery of new areas of the debris field, previously unknown marine life and new areas of deterioration that could provide unobstructed access to the interior of the ship, the company stated on its website.

The vessel making the trip is equipped with two remotely operated vehicles that will be used to capture the first end-to-end mapping image of the wreck field and debris site, RMST Inc. said.

The expedition will include “the highest resolution camera systems ever deployed at the site in an effort to bring new insights about the ship to the community,” said Evan Kovacs, an underwater cinematographer working on the mission.

2 Robots Scheduled to Scan the Titanic Wreck

If you thought the world was ready to let go of the Titanic after the horrific Titan submersible implosion last year, we'd both be wrong. Researchers are still captivated by the shipwreck that took 1,517 lives and inspired a blockbuster film—so captivated that they're sending a pair of deep-sea robots down to the wreckage later this week. The robots will scan the remains of the doomed ship, providing scientists and Titanic enthusiasts with an update on the condition of the rubble.

The RMS Titanic, Inc. crew arrived at the wreck's coordinates Tuesday night via Dino Chouest, a supply ship. Founded in the 1980s by a group of artifact-seeking businessmen, RMS Titanic, Inc. has effectively controlled access to the Titanic wreckage for the last few decades. The firm is the only entity legally allowed to harvest artifacts from the wreckage, which allowed it to profit off of victims' possessions and pieces of the ship until a judge ruled that the firm would have to stop its underwater grave-robbing in 2000. While RMS Titanic, Inc. can no longer sell artifacts individually, it can sell them as a collection or tour them around as a themed exhibit—the latter of which the firm has done for about 24 years.

These days, RMS Titanic, Inc. isn't just a money-making opportunity. (Though it still insists Titanic artifacts are better off on national tours than in museums.) It's also an organization under which Titanic researchers gather to learn more about the tragedy: namely, how its wreckage has been affected by saltwater, currents, marine life, and other underwater variables. On its website, the firm claims this information ultimately benefits "climate science, marine biology, engineering, geology, geophysics, cinematography, maritime operations, naval science, and public policy as well as the creative arts." All of these fields allegedly stand to benefit from RMS Titanic, Inc.'s forthcoming robot expedition.

From two and a half miles above the Titanic wreckage, RMS Titanic, Inc. will drop two diving robots. It will take at least two hours for the robots, known as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), to reach the bottom of the ocean. Once they get there, the crew aboard Dino Chouest will use the robots' "custom-built structured array of high-resolution cameras and custom lighting” to navigate and capture 65K images of the wreckage. The crew aims to capture the first-ever end-to-end mapping image of the wreck site and debris field, which it will then share with paid site subscribers and social media followers. The ROVs are for imaging only, so this expedition won't recover any artifacts.

"The 2024 expedition will not only provide the most advanced and detailed look at the current state of the wreck site and debris field but will also allow us to assess which artifacts may be at risk of being lost forever," RMS Titanic, Inc. president Jessica Sanders said in a release from April.

The expedition is the first RMS Titanic, Inc. has conducted since 2010. It's also the first to visit the Titanic wreck site since Titan, Oceangate's Titanic submersible, went missing in June 2023. The submersible was eventually confirmed to have imploded under the deep sea's immense pressure, resulting in the deaths of all five passengers.

Feature: Westport 112 Motoryacht

Discussion in ' Westport Yacht ' started by YachtForums , Oct 20, 2020 .

Westport 112 Raised Pilothouse Motoryacht YachtForums’ first review of the Westport 112 goes way back to July of 2005. While styling has been modernized, this iconic design maintains its platform of success with seakeeping ability, impressive cruise speeds and comfortable styling. With the recent launch of hull number 64 in the Westport 112 Raised Pilothouse series, YachtForums is proud to revisit this updated model and present it to our community. So what makes this Westport 112 review different? Somewhere between spoiler alert and full disclosure, this review is virtual. Wait! Don’t hit the delete key yet. Hate to burst your belief in the written word, but when we first began reviewing yachts, we were troubled to learn the frequency of yacht reviewers that never stepped foot aboard a boat, none-the-less taken the yacht out for a sea trial. As much as we reviled at the inexcusability, we have now joined the ranks of those computer-generated reviewers. But, we have a valid excuse: this YF review is being written as COVID 19 numbers are once again increasing in Florida and the prudent approach is to not expose, nor be exposed.

Westport, the largest yacht builder in North America, whose main building facilities are in Westport and Port Angeles. WA, has been building sea-going vessels since 1964. With over 170 fishing boats to their credit, and 35 passenger ferries plying the waters of the Pacific Northwest, the entry into the luxury yacht market has produced 160 motoryachts and precipitated the name change from Westport Shipyard to Westport Yachts. The Westport, WA. facility includes 170,000 square feet of enclosed space; the Port Angeles facility boasts 100,000 square feet. Then there is the 80,000 sq. ft. cabinet shop and 4,100 sq. ft. for the upholstery shop. The Design Department consists of naval architects, marine engineers, and design specialists.

dino chouest yacht

The prestigious list of naval architects that have assisted in the design of Westport yachts includes William Garden, Donald Starkey, and Greg Marshall, with the credit of the Westport 112 design going to the ubiquitous Jack Sarin. One of the better-known Westport owners is Gary Chouest, head of the Edison Chouest Offshore companies known for their Gulf Coast marine holdings including a fleet of 200 commercial vessels. Gary currently owns a 2016 Westport 164. Gary’s son Dino owns his father’s former 2007 Westport. Gary Chouest, whose marketing team declined an interview with him for this review, bought Westport Yachts in 2014. The Chouest family also owns American Custom Yachts of Stuart, Florida. While we’re name-dropping famous owners, credit goes to Orin Edson, founder of Bayliner Yachts, who purchased Westport Yachts in 1997 and maintained ownership until he sold it to the Louisiana based Chouest family 6 years ago.

Westport combines the traditional yachty ambiance with contemporary styling. Sylvia Bolton, based in Seattle, WA., has been bringing her design talents to yachts for thirty years. Westport yachts are all semi-custom which enables the owners to modify the interior décor and furnishings to their personal tastes. Perimeter soffit with crown molding is seen on headliners throughout. All overhead lighting is LED and is controlled with the Crestron system. Serious attention has been paid to the audio-visual systems onboard and include the Kaleidescape movie server system and the Digital Media distribution system, providing a variety of entertainment sources throughout the yacht.

I’m sure there’s many a captain who would consider this beautiful entry to the pilothouse as the stairway to heaven. The intricate details, partnered with the practicality of wooden steps with non-skid, is a precursor to what awaits at the top.

The vast display of displays should tell the captain everything s/he needs to know about where to go and how to get there. The twin MTUs, with their 2,185 hp thrust, power the 150ton ship at a cool 22-knot clip. One fuel tank divided into three compartments quenches their thirst with a 5,480 gallon capacity. The latest and greatest in navigational equipment, communication paraphernalia, and monitoring systems are all present and suitable for worldwide voyaging.

The viewing gallery offers a spectacular vantage point. Aside from being a comfortable platform for the backseat drivers or wannabe captains, it’s an interesting place to monitor the displays as well as a nifty lunch spot. The overhead cabinets store the volumes of manuals should one want to read about things like the yacht’s construction which is primarily comprised of foam-cored composite materials with E-glass reinforcements and vinylester resins. Structural framing combines E-glass and carbon fiber reinforcements. Of course the structure is engineered to ABS rules.

Even the lower accommodation foyer shows the touches of casual elegance combined with practicality. Storage aplenty throughout the yacht with much of it stowed away in hidden compartments concealed by displays of art.

The amidships master stateroom offers the respite of an inner sanctum. Westport pays particular attention to sound attenuation including floating joinery connections, acoustic insulation, and sound and vibration dampening materials. The California King centerline bed, with lift-up storage beneath, is flanked by nightstands. Of course there is the requisite settee, which is presumably for comfortably attaching shoes to feet, but everyone knows it’s for tossing garments before retiring that for some odd reason are still lying there askew in the morning.

dino chouest yacht

The master head is opulent as well as practical. The Headhunter MSD treats the wastewater in situ although the vessel’s holding tank capacity is 600 gallons. Two Blue Water desalination units offer 3,000 gallons per day when fresh water is in short supply.

The expansive portside guest stateroom features a queen bed with upholstered headboard with storage and drawers below. The large wardrobe features a full-length mirror on the exterior door. Stowage is enhanced with a five-drawer dresser and 2 nightstands with three drawers in each.

The starboard guest stateroom offers flexibility in the sleeping arrangements. While in “standard mode,” the stateroom offers twin beds each with an upholstered headboard. The inboard bed and nightstand are movable allowing the cozy couple or oversized guest to enjoy king-size comfort. The inboard Pullman bunk contributes towards making a great cabin for a few of the grandkids.

With a flybridge dining area like this, no wonder the Westport 112 is so popular in the charter world. Currently, there are 18 Westport 112s available for charter on one charter website.

In keeping with the format of virtual yacht reviews, relevant information like the engine room and mechanicals is noticeably absent. Aside from the lengthy description of particulars and numerous detail shots, YachtForums’ reviews typically highlight the uniqueness of specific systems, cutting edge technology, or particular points of interest. For more information to include what is missing from this review, I’m afraid we have to wait until the COVID precautions pass or the launch of Hull#65, which might just come first.

Mayor claims drone intercepted near Moscow

Russian air defense units allegedly intercepted a drone over the city of Elektrostal in Moscow Oblast, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported in a Telegram post on Nov. 19.

Sobyanin claims the drone was heading towards central Moscow.

The Mayor also said emergency services were at work at the crash site but no casualties or damage to infrastructure have been reported.

The Kyiv Independent could not independently verify the reports.

Since the launch of Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukrainian forces have targeted Russian military, logistics, and infrastructure sites in the occupied territories and within Russia.

Today's drone report comes just hours after Ukraine's alleged drone attack was intercepted over the Bogorodskoye municipal district in Moscow Oblast.

While claims of Ukrainian attacks within Russian territory have increased since summer 2023, Kyiv rarely comments on these reports.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

dino chouest yacht

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

dino chouest yacht

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

dino chouest yacht

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

dino chouest yacht

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

dino chouest yacht

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

dino chouest yacht

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

dino chouest yacht

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
