The journey continues to Cleopatra Island.

Today overnight in a catamaran cabin.

Day 5: Cleopatra Island or Sedir Adasi to Ingiliz Limani (B/L/D).

Today’s activities will be very exciting.

Today you will have the opportunity to experience the peaceful atmosphere of Cleopatra Island. Here you can witness why this island is famous for its golden sand beaches.

In addition to healing on Cleopatra Island, today you will also be invited to visit the ancient city of Cedrae which is famous for its ancient theater ruins.

The incredible theater area then becomes a special place to visit, especially for those of you who want to stretch your legs.

The ruins on the east side of the island are ruins dating back to Roman times.

The Corinth Canal is an engineering marvel that few cruise lines sail through.

Some cruisers prefer a cabin high above the sea. I prefer being in the center of the ship, which tends to be less rocky and provides a unique perspective. Lucky me, my suite on Windstar Cruises’ 312-passenger Star Legend is on Deck 4, just high enough on the ship for the glass to present a feeling of being on the sea rather than above it. On the final morning of an eight-night cruise in early May from Istanbul to Athens , I wake up, pull open the blackout curtains, and stare at the ocean, which is practically at my eye level.

This will be a particularly exciting day.

I am perhaps even a little nervous for our voyage through the narrow Corinth Canal, which allows ships to pass between the Ionian and the Aegean Seas. Our yacht is about 63 feet wide and will squeeze through the world’s narrowest man-made canal. The Corinth Canal is about 69 feet wide at the sea floor and closer to 79 feet at sea level—tight, but doable for small ships.

The idea for a canal cutting through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth originated with the ancient Greeks and was later contemplated by the Romans. But it wasn’t until the 19th century when French engineers finally sliced through the limestone rock, after trial and error, completing the project in 1893. The canal shaves hundreds of miles off the route between the Aegean and the Ionian Seas, in our case making for a much quicker trip to Athens; the canal saves passengers 20 to 28 hours at sea.

Crossing the Corinth Canal is a rarified experience. Only a few small-ship cruise lines, including Windstar , Emerald Cruises , and French line Ponant operate a handful of cruises through the canal each year, mostly for repositioning purposes, such as when moving ships from the Mediterranean to the Greek Isles. What many travelers might not realize is that sailing the Corinth Canal offers the opportunity to experience an engineering marvel and a waterway that is narrower and arguably more thrilling than the more well-known Panama Canal or Suez Canal. It also allows for itineraries that include the less-visited port of Itea in Greece, with access to ancient Delphi, a UNESCO World Heritage site that dates back to the second millennium B.C.

The canal was closed for two years for repairs after a landslide in 2021. It reopened last year, then closed again for more repairs. I was on the first passenger cruise ship to go through in 2024.

On our way here, our itinerary took us to Türkiye’s ancient Roman ruins at Ephesus, including for a complimentary Windstar-hosted, white-tablecloth dinner party among the ruins. We visited Mykonos and Santorini in Greece, Bodrum in Türkiye, and lovely, quiet Myrina on the Greek island of Lemnos, the kind of quaint place you dream about finding in Greece (when I posted a photo on social media, a Greek friend chastised me for spreading the word about his “secret” island).

In Greece’s ancient Delphi, I paused at the sanctuary of Apollo, hoping I’d be one of those people who feel a mysterious aura in a place where ancient Greeks sought guidance from oracles. I didn’t, so I instead enjoyed the gorgeous views of olive trees and countryside from Mount Parnassus.

The all-suite Star Legend helps to provide a sense of place on board by serving local dishes, such as moussaka and spicy baked feta, and by bringing on a belly dancer who wiggled through the audience in the ship’s theater one evening. The Star Legend is the kind of small ship where you make friends easily; the majority of passengers are couples in their forties and older. There’s a casual yachtlike atmosphere on board, with little dressing up for dinner. It’s easy to feel at home here and just be yourself. On canal day, I follow my daily routine, grabbing a nautical-blue couch in the Yacht Club at the bow and enjoying an excellent latte and perfectly crunchy almond croissant while looking through huge windows, with the same views as the officers on the bridge a deck below. My husband, David, heads to the aft of the ship to enjoy his eggs, which he eats outdoors, with views to the back of the ship, at the café. Then we meet up with new friends.

With no port stops today, David and I have agreed to teach our favorite card game, Up and Down the River. A competitive tournament ensues. One of the men we’ve tutored, a government contractor from Virginia, proves himself a champion.

Windstar is the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation, with cuisine to match. So far, I’ve guiltily managed to get through seven days without hitting the gym (I did, however, indulge in an excellent massage at the spa). Since I can’t walk on shore during this sea day, I hit the deck, walking around and around past some guests in the small pool and others reading in lounge chairs.

When we near the canal, there is a flurry of activity, with everyone trying to figure out the best place to watch the experience. We’re met by the tugboat that will tow us through the canal. Local pilots come aboard our ship (as required by local authorities due to the challenges of navigating the difficult passage), along with a local guide hired by Windstar, who provides historical commentary and context.

David and I head outside in front of the Yacht Club. Another prime viewing spot is one deck below, by the ship’s hot tub.

Our first view is such a narrow cut through land that our waterway looks like a small river, though barriers marking the entrance give a clue that this is not a trip into nature. The crew serves us snacks as we wait for clearance to proceed.

As we enter, the nearly four-mile-long canal seems quite manageable. But then it narrows and narrows until there are sheer sand-colored limestone walls mere feet from the sides of the ship. It narrows still, as the captain and the pilot position on the bridge wings (outdoor step-out areas used when docking) so they can get a better view and make sure we don’t scrape the solid rock on either side. I have a moment of trepidation when I realize that if they wanted, they could reach out and grab the branches of bushes growing on the limestone cliffs.

We pass under rail and road bridges. Tourists line the overpasses, some who have come by bus from Athens to watch ships pass through the canal. At the last bridge, which we reach in less than an hour after we entered the canal, bungee jumpers seek an adrenaline rush by bouncing right above us. I had a rush, too, and now breathe deeply after witnessing firsthand that we have successfully slipped through a true engineering feat.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Instead of kayakers and tour boats, the summertime scene on the Milwaukee River has taken on a solemn tone this week during the Republican National Convention : Around-the-clock patrol boats, some with heavily armed officers.

Security planners have had to contend with the winding waterways through Milwaukee near the Fiserv Center RNC convention site, along with securing downtown streets. Roughly half a dozen police departments, along with state and federal agencies, have boats patrolling the river 24-hours-a-day until the convention ends this week.

“They’re committed to working those long shifts, throughout the days and nights,” U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Joe Neff said. “They’ve been all on board for making sure public safety is priority.”

Associated Press journalists were allowed on board a 29-foot U.S. Coast Guard boat Wednesday to observe. The boat, typically used for search-and-rescue operations, traveled near the secure zone of the convention site via Lake Michigan and the river that empties into it.

A large section of the river has been shut down to commercial and recreational traffic this week, with very few exceptions, like residents who live on the river. Within an hour, the Coast Guard boat had passed vessels from Milwaukee police, state conservation wardens and a heavily armed specialty Coast Guard tactical force in camouflage gear.

The patrols are part of a massive security plan that Milwaukee police, the U.S. Secret Service and others have been detailing for more than a year. Security around former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, has been especially tight in the wake of last weekend’s apparent assassination attempt.

“There is no higher level of security that can be invested in events such as this,” Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman told the AP on Wednesday.

So far, no major incidents have been reported on the water during the convention, according to the Coast Guard.

Patrol boats typically depart from a Coast Guard facility south of downtown on Lake Michigan, before turning into the mouth of the channel where the river begins. Speeds are then slowed to 5 mph and boats pass by the restaurants and converted warehouses of Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward on the way to the secure zone.

The boats are tasked with monitoring Milwaukee’s downtown bridges and keeping unauthorized people and vessels out of the secure zone.

They are also on the lookout for anything suspicious.

As the Coast Guard vessel traveled near the downtown security zone, the crew spotted something mysterious floating in the water. They turned the boat around and fished it out, discovering the object was only a red and gray nylon tarp that had been rolled up and posed no threat.

Coast Guard officials said the help from other agencies this week also means they can keep up their usual public safety duties.

“Yes, we’ve got the national security event here, the RNC. That doesn’t mean we’re ignoring the rest of our normal mission — search and rescue,” said Coast Guard Lt. Phillip Gurtler. “We still have the coverage that we need.”

Festival, ahoy a dozen things to know about st. paul's minnesota yacht club.

It's the biggest music festival launched in the Twin Cities in 12 years. It's expecting more than 30,000 musicheads per day. And it's being produced by the same company that puts on Lollapalooza and the Austin City Limits fests.

There's a lot to learn about the Minnesota Yacht Club — especially for deprived Twin Cities music lovers who haven't been to a big, nationally promoted festival like this since Live Nation's ill-fated River's Edge Music Festival on the same site in 2012.

With its inaugural voyage scheduled Friday and Saturday at Harriet Island Regional Park in St. Paul, the river-themed event features a Gen-X-nostalgic all-rock lineup led by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alanis Morissette, Gwen Stefani, Black Crowes, the Offspring, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, the Hold Steady and a dozen more acts. New Orleans' soul-funk troupe Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue are the only non-rock act on the bill, and they actually rock harder than most of them.

Here are some pointers, talking points and pointed opinions going into this weekend's mega-bash.

1. Saturday's single-day tickets are sold out. Even though they just played in town last year , the Chili Peppers' day as headliners quickly proved more popular than Morissette's. However, two-day general admission festival passes (now $255) and one-day Friday tickets ($135) were still available at press time via minnesotayachtclubfestival.com .

2. No, it's not a "yacht rock" festival. There actually has been a lot of confusion about this. The event's name is simply a fun spin on its riverside location and the relative irony of someone having a yacht in Minnesota. It has nothing to do with the genre of music associated with breezy and cheesy '70s-'80s hitmakers like Toto, Seals & Crofts and Christopher Cross. How fun would it have been to see one of those acts sandwiched between the Hold Steady and Offspring, though?

3. Boats actually are part of the experience. "Riverboat VIP" ticket holders ($825) can lounge in air-conditioning on the Jonathan Padelford and even take a 60-minute cruise on the paddleboat during the fest. Why anyone would want to go to a music fest to set sail for South St. Paul, we're not sure, but it's a unique idea for a festival.

4. The company behind it is in the festival business. C3 got its start with the hugely successful Austin City Limits Music Festival in the early 2000s before turning Lollapalooza into a one-weekend Chicago event. Live Nation bought a 51% stake in the company in 2014 but mostly leaves C3 to do its own thing when it comes to festivals. Other fests in its portfolio include Boston Calling, Atlanta's Shaky Knees and New York's Governors Ball — all steeped in unique branding and preparations for each city.

"We've been talking to the city well over a year now and working with them on the logistical plans," C3 promoter Tim Sweetwood said of MYC.

5. There will be only two stages (and no overlapping performances). While many festivals require fans to make tough decisions and Iditarod-like treks between competing stages — OK, maybe that's being a little dramatic — the setup at MYC in its first year features just two stages with alternating music that never runs concurrently. Dubbed the Skipper Stage and Crow's Nest Stage, they are only about a quarter-mile apart, too.

6. Gwen Stefani's appearance is the rarest among the top names. Last seen in town making a surprise appearance with husband Blake Shelton at the TC Summer Jam in 2022 , the former No Doubt singer and ex-coach on NBC's "The Voice" has not been performing a lot of late; just a handful of fly-in gigs this summer.

In the solo gigs she has done in 2024, Stefani has been revisiting many songs from No Doubt (with whom she reunited at Coachella fest in April ), including "Don't Speak," "Just a Girl" and "Hella Good."

7. The lineup isn't entirely a nostalgia trip. All these aforementioned acts make it look exclusively like a '90s and early '00s throwback fest, but there are actually modern stars and buzzmakers on the lineup.

Texas slinger Gary Clark Jr. has been the most thrilling blues-rock guitarist on tour over the past decade . Harmonious Seattle rockers the Head and the Heart have racked up a swath of radio hits and TV/film placement with songs like "Lost in My Mind." Twangy singer Morgan Wade has made a couple of well-reviewed records with Jason Isbell's guitarist Sadler Vaden as her producer. Indie-rocker Michigander is a critical favorite.

The Twin Cities' own pop-rock darlings Hippo Campus have become a big draw , too, recently playing New York's Governors Ball festival and selling out the Armory in Minneapolis.

8. There's good local representation. In addition to Hippo Campus, we'll see hard-charging local faves Gully Boys help kick off the fest Friday ahead of viral sensations Durry . On Saturday, fuzz-rocky kids Bugsy play before a fun afternoon twofer with Soul Asylum and the semi-local Hold Steady. As rock-only lineups go — musical diversity is not Yacht Club's strong suit — these are some of the state's most relevant acts present or past playing live in 2024.

9. The list of items you're allowed to bring in is short. Leave the chairs, coolers and umbrellas at home. Only small fanny packs, clutch purses, emptied hydration packs or small clear bags are allowed in. Other permissible items include: phones, baby strollers, blankets/towels, binoculars, reusable water bottles, non-aerosol sunscreen (3.4 ounce max) and Frisbees. For our sake, though, please don't bring any Frisbees.

10. There's a longer list of alternative transportation options. Coming from Austin, Texas, a city with notorious traffic problems, C3 makes a point of encouraging biking, ride-sharing and public transit options at all its festivals.

There's a designated rideshare dropoff site (Uber, Lyft, taxi) near the Wabasha Street entrance at 49 E. Fillmore Av. Bike lots are located at both that entrance and the second set of gates along W. Water Street (bring your own lock). For light rail, the Green Line's Central Station is a half-mile walk away. Ample public bus route stops also can be mapped out via metrotransit.org .

11. Harriet Island isn't really an island, and it isn't all that hard to get to. You wouldn't know it from the maps on the festival's website — or if you're one of those uppity Minneapolitans who never visit the other Twin City — but you can approach the park from the southwest side of the river as well as the downtown side. There are assorted parking options over there, too.

12. This is just a start. "It's sort of a slow burn to start," C3′s Sweetwood said, promising expansion in the years to come. "We'll try to give it a little more color and better branding, the kind of things we have a good feel for at C3, being primarily a festival producer."

Security around former President Donald Trump , the Republican presidential nominee, has been especially tight in the wake of last weekend’s apparent assassination attempt.

“There is no higher level of security that can be invested in events such as this,” Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman told the AP on Wednesday.

So far, no major incidents have been reported on the water during the convention, according to the Coast Guard.

Patrol boats typically depart from a Coast Guard facility south of downtown on Lake Michigan, before turning into the mouth of the channel where the river begins. Speeds are then slowed to 5 mph and boats pass by the restaurants and converted warehouses of Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward on the way to the secure zone.

The boats are tasked with monitoring Milwaukee’s downtown bridges and keeping unauthorized people and vessels out of the secure zone.

They are also on the lookout for anything suspicious.

As the Coast Guard vessel traveled near the downtown security zone, the crew spotted something mysterious floating in the water. They turned the boat around and fished it out, discovering the object was only a red and gray nylon tarp that had been rolled up and posed no threat.

Coast Guard officials said the help from other agencies this week also means they can keep up their usual public safety duties.

“Yes, we’ve got the national security event here, the RNC. That doesn’t mean we’re ignoring the rest of our normal mission — search and rescue,” said Coast Guard Lt. Phillip Gurtler. “We still have the coverage that we need.”
