The Royal Yacht Hotel on the corner of and has been completely rebuilt as a four-star hotel in the 21st century, but it claims to be the island's longest established hotel, a claim shared by the in David Place.
The Royal Yacht Hotel almost certainly has a better claim to be the island's oldest than its near namesake the Royal Hotel, because it was probably founded in the 1820s. In 1833 a guide book referred to it as 'The London and Yacht Hotel'. Ten years later it was known briefly as 'Hotel de Paris', before it became the 'Royal Yacht Club Hotel'. The Royal Hotel, however, can only trace its origins back to a 'probable' 1842.
In 1890 the name of the Weighbridge hotel was shortened to The Royal Yacht Hotel. Perhaps the hotel's most distinguished visitors were members of the French Royal Family: the Duc du Montpesier, the King's fifth son and Duc d'Alençon and Compte d'Eu, the King's grandsons, who in 1848, forced to flee the revolution in France, took refuge in Jersey.
1874 Lillie Le Breton and Edward Langtry held their wedding reception at the Royal Yacht Club Hotel. During World War 2 the hotel was commandeered by the Geman Navy.
Ownership of the lane between the hotel and the adjoining buildings cannot be determined and the new hotel has been built spanning this gap, but with an open area with glass wall and roof. The facade of the original building has been maintained and a contrasting new building erected on the adjoining site, which was the headquarters of the island's bus company, Jersey Motor Transport , in the second half of the 20th century.

their majesties visited guernsey on tuesday.
Queen Camilla was pictured wearing a support bandage on her foot on Tuesday as she stepped out in Guernsey.
The King and Queen were visiting the Island on day two of their tour of the Channel Islands which kicked off in Jersey on Monday when Her Majesty was reported to have suffered an ankle sprain.
Whilst in Guernsey the royal couple met with well-wishers on their way to the Special Sitting of the States of Deliberation of Guernsey’s Parliament.
And despite the heavy rain in Jersey the day before, Charles and Camilla enjoyed greeting the crowds in St Peter Port, with the Queen even tucking into an ice cream, as seen in the clip below...
Now see the best photos from their day in Guernsey...
Despite her injury, the Queen still looked incredibly stylish in a pair of low-heeled Chanel pumps, using her umbrella to support her as she walked beside her husband.
As for the rest of her outfit, Camilla opted for a vibrant royal blue coatdress and beamed for the camera as she waved to the gathering crowds.
Charles was in high spirits as he met with well-wishes wearing a summery, light grey suit, silver tie and blue pocket square to match his beloved wife.
The King and Queen couldn't have looked happier as they made their way past members of the public who had gathered to see them.
Charles pictured during the Special Sitting of the States of Deliberation of Guernsey’s Parliament.
The King is known as the Duke of Normandy on the Channel Islands, dating from when William the Conqueror’s son, Henry I, seized the Duchy of Normandy, including the islands, in 1106.
At official functions, islanders raise the loyal toast to "The Duke of Normandy, our King".
The States sitting was followed by a Ceremony of Homage, a tradition that is observed when the monarch first visits Guernsey.
Historic title-holders, seigneurs and dames of small parcels of land known as fiefs, paid homage during the ceremony, which was held in French.
During the ceremony, Charles was presented with some ceremonial silver spurs.
Whilst in Guernsey, the King and Queen met with the daughters of a Navy veteran who taught the King how to fly helicopters.
Tricia Voute and Carina Howitt explained how delighted they were to have been invited to a tea party following their father and Guerneyman, Peter Voute's, death in February.
"The King wrote to us personally after our father had passed. It was very kind and not expected.
"It was like a posthumous gift from our dad. (He) was very private about it… so we were very surprised to hear and we were very touched that he remembered (him).
"We thought we would get a generalised note saying the King passes on his condolences but it was the sheer kindness of the letter – which is very private – and the flowers that he sent us that moved us very deeply."
Mr Voute, who had a distinguished career in the Royal Navy, was also an usher at Charles and Diana’s wedding in 1981.
When asked how their father spoke of the King, his daughters said: “They were all young and happy times. Our father always spoke very well of him, very personally of him and that follows through to all the family.
“He always said he was one of the most natural pilots he’d ever taught and he always said that he was just really good fun, a really good person. He rated him extremely highly.
“They’ve kindly asked us to be here because of that."
The crowds gathered in the sunshine to greet the King and Queen as they toured local businesses around St Peter's Port.
Charles was greeted with cheers, handshakes and even a kiss from one local.
The King took a sip of Charles golden ale from the Little Big Brew Company, a local craft brewery established in 2020.
The new brew was created to celebrate the King's coronation.
Speaking after his visit, Dan O’Brien, director and head brewer at LBBC, told the PA news agency: "He seemed to enjoy it. He tasted it.
"He told us 'That's as much as I can manage as I've got a long day ahead'."
Meanwhile, Camilla sampled some Channel Island cider from The Flying Donkey's stall.
The King and Queen met eight-year-old Golden Guernsey goat, Tamsin, affectionately known as Tamtam!
She became the first livestock breed to be granted a protective title in recent history.
The royal title will apply to all Golden Guernseys on the island and elsewhere in the world.
The King and Queen's visit to Guernsey finished with a group of children from Sark School singing Happy Birthday for Her Majesty in Serquaise French.
Camilla will celebrate her 77th birthday on Wednesday 17 July - which coincides with the State Opening of Parliament.
The Queen looked incredibly touched as she was given a birthday card from the school children.

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Hands up if you’re ready to be dazzled! From a ceremony structure designed to float on water to a jaw-dropping reception room with flowers blooming from every service, we’re swooning over every bit of this wedding. If you can believe it, that’s just the beginning. Julia Kaptelova artfully shot every detail, like the ballet performance guests were treated to and snow falling from the ceiling for the first dance! Prepare to be amazed and take a visit to the full gallery .
From About You Decor … Our design is a symbol of dawn and a distant endless horizon. Ahead is a long, happy life without any borders. An international couple, Pavel and Cherry, met in London and have been walking together for many years.
From the Bride, Cherry… My husband and I we decided to have our summer wedding in Moscow because the city is where his roots are. As we knew we were going to have the other wedding ceremony in China, we wanted our Moscow one to be very personal and intimate. We’ve known each other since we were fourteen, together with many of our friends whom we’ve also known for a decade.
I didn’t want to walk down the aisle twice so the plausibility of my request quickly came into discussion. The open pontoon stage was constructed in order to facilitate the bridal entrance on water, although there were concerns about safety as the last thing we wanted was probably a drowned bride before she could get on stage, picture that! I have to say on that day it wasn’t easy to get on the pontoon stage from the boat, in my long gown and high heels. Luckily my bridesmaids still noticed even though they stood the furthest from me on the stage, and helped me out without prior rehearsal. My girls could just tell whenever I needed a hand or maybe they were just so used to my clumsiness. Who knows 😂
We all love our photographer Julia! She’s so talented and her style is so unique. Our beloved host Alex is exceptional who made everyone laugh and cry. It was truly a blessing to have so many kind and beautiful souls on our big day. Thank you all!

I’m still not convinced this Moscow wedding, captured to perfection by Sonya Khegay , isn’t actually an inspiration session—it’s just that breathtaking. From the beautiful Bride’s gorgeous lace wedding dress and flawless hair and makeup to the pretty pastel color palette and stunning ceremony and reception spaces, this wedding is almost too good to be true. Do yourself a favor and see it all in The Vault now!
From Sonya Khegay … It was the last day of April and still very cold in the morning. The weather forecast wasn’t pleasing and no one expected that the sun would come out, but miracles happen and light rain gave way to the warm rays.
I love how all the details went together, you could feel the harmony in everything throughout the entire wedding day from the morning until the fireworks.
A gentle look of the bride, elegant but so airy and unique decor, the fresh and light atmosphere of early spring and, of course, true happiness in the eyes. My heart becomes so warm from these memories, it is always a pleasure to see the birth of a new family of two loving hearts.

You really can’t go wrong with simple: a beautiful Bride , perfectly pretty petals , loved ones all around. But add in an amazing firework show to cap off the night and simple just became downright extraordinary. Captured by Lena Elisseva , with assistance by Katya Butenko , this rustic Russian celebration is simply fantastic. See it all in the Vault right here !
From Lena Eliseeva Photo … This cozy and warm summer wedding of gorgeous Natalia and Anton was in the middle of June. The young couple decided to organize their wedding themselves, and the day was very personal and touching. I am absolutely in love with rustic outdoor weddings, and this one is my favourite because of the free and easy atmosphere.
All the decor excluding the bride’s bouquet was made by a team of ten friends of the bride and groom. And it was charming – a light and beautiful arch, eco-style polygraphy and succulents, candy-bar with caramel apples and berries – sweet joys of summer.
At the end of ceremony the guests tossed up white handkerchiefs embroidered by Natalia’s own hands.
The most touching moment was the happy eyes of the groom’s grandmother, the most estimable person on the wedding. And the fireworks were a bright end to that beautiful day.

These photos from Lena Kozhina are so stunningly beautiful – as in you can’t help but stop and stare – it’s hard to believe it’s real life. But these pics are proof of this gorgeous Bride and her handsome Groom’s celebration at Moscow’s Fox Lodge , surrounded by vibrant colors and breathtaking blooms . Oh, and the idea of prepping for your Big Day outside in the sun ? Brilliant. See more bright ideas right here !
From Lena Kozhina … When we met with the couple for the first time, we immediately paid attention to Dima’s behavior towards Julia. There was a feeling of tenderness and awe, and we immediately wanted to recreate this atmosphere of love, care and warmth on their Big Day.
Later, when we had chosen a green meadow and an uncovered pavilion overlooking a lake as the project site, it only highlighted a light summer mood with colorful florals and a great number of natural woods. The name of the site is Fox Lodge and peach-orange color, as one of the Bride’s favorites, set the tone for the whole design – from the invitations, in which we used images of fox cubs to elements of serving guest tables and other decorative elements with the corresponding bright accents.

To no surprise, World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler is still the odds-on-favorite to win his first Claret Jug and the third major of his career this weekend in Scotland heading into Round 2 after shooting a 1-under (70).
What is noteworthy is how big of a favorite the Ridgewood, New Jersey, native is.
With odds as short as +450 (Bet $100 to win $450) on multiple sportsbooks pre-tournament, it made Scheffler the largest favorite in 15 years since Tiger Woods in 2009.
England's own Daniel Brown is atop the leaderboard at 6-under (65) after day one as he has a one-shot lead over Ireland's Shane Lowry, who is 5-under (66).
Here are the top-10 odds-on-favorites on FanDuel Sportsbook in New Jersey to win this golf's last major heading into round two:
Scottie Scheffler: 4/1 (Bet $100 to win $400)
Shane Lowry: 5/1 (Bet $100 to win $500)
Xander Schauffele: +550 (Bet $100 to win $550)
Justin Thomas: 14/1 (Bet $100 to win $1,400)
Brooks Koepka: 16/1 (Bet $100 to win $1,600)
Daniel Brown and Alex Noren: 30/1 (Bet $100 to win $3,000)
Collin Morikawa and Matt Fitzpatrick: 33/1 (Bet $100 to win 3,300)
Adam Scott: 35/1 (Bet $100 to win $3,500)
Royal Troon is a Par 71 course that measures 7,385 yards from the championship tees, the third longest course in British Open history.
It features a 632-yard par-five hole at No. 6, the longest hole on the course and the furthest hole in tournament history.
Two holes later is the par-3 No. 8, which has the nickname "Postage Stamp" due to being the shortest hole in the tournament, ranging from 99 yards to 123 yards, the shortest hole in the history of the tournament.
This year marks the 10th occasion that Royal Troon will host the British Open.
The last time it was held here was in 2016, when Sweden's Henrik Stenson won his lone major in his career, becoming the first Nordic major champion in the history of golf with a three-stroke victory over Phil Mickelson.
