Anacortes, Washington (PRWEB) May 02, 2017 -- San Juan Yachts of Anacortes Washington expands under new ownership, the company has been acquired by San Juan Capital Holdings, LLC, a division of Concorde Marine which is also the parent company to Northern Marine, builder of custom long range expedition and pleasure yachts from 57’-152’. Concorde Marine is currently building commercial seiners for the Alaskan fisheries, expedition yachts, and pleasure yachts.

The legendary leader in West Coast yacht construction will continue to build the existing models and bring forward a new 50’ for 2018. The current 48 will become the San Juan 50 with some enhancements and optional layouts. Currently under construction for San Juan are several 40’ and 50’ Volvo Penta IPS models with plans to have one in the fall boat shows, including the Fort Lauderdale show displaying the new 50’ sedan.

“The acquisition was a perfect marriage between San Juan and Northern Marine as they are hi-end builders of robust go anywhere yachts with systems that are the envy of the industry, leading edge infusion processes for the composites and artisan master craftsman creating stunning interiors,” says Gilbert Villarreal, owner of San Juan Capital Holdings, LLC. “The two companies were literally side by side in Anacortes, and have shared many employees over the years. The new company has employed most of the key personnel of San Juan Composites and are being supported by the crew that has won several awards for their custom builds”.

Essex Boat Works , LLC (EBW), owned by Richard Carlson, was recently appointed the exclusive Northeast dealer for San Juan Yachts. Essex Boat Works is an authorized service and warranty center on the East Coast, managed by John Lewis, where they have enjoyed a working relationship with San Juan Yachts for many years. The new sales venture will be a first for both companies as San Juan has not previously sold through a dealer network and this will be the first new boat line to be represented under the new ownership at Essex Boat Works, LLC. “San Juan Yacht sales at EBW will be headed up by seasoned yacht broker and Sales Director Bob Jarrett. Bob has held positions with among the nation’s leading builders, dealers and brokerage firms having represented over five hundred families in the purchase or sale of their yachts during his thirty-year career in yacht sales,” says Diana Gregory, Controller of Essex Boat Works, LLC.

“We are excited to work with one of the finest yacht manufacturers on the market. San Juan Yachts designs and develops each yacht as a work of art. No mass production here, created by human hands, utilizing the most advanced materials and manufacturing processes in the industry. Each yacht is well worth the time it takes to deliver a luxury model built to the individual needs of each owner,” says Carlson. “We plan to launch the introduction of our first stock SJ40 Sedan at the Newport Boat show in September.”

The company continues the craft and tradition of yacht construction at their Anacortes, Washington location, known as the fiberglass boat building capital of the world. San Juan Yachts prides themselves on state of the art technology using strong light weight composite products, most of which has been influenced the region’s aeronautic industry.

The boats are designed by Greg Marshall with softer lines and built to the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) guidelines and the machinery and equipment installed per the regulations of the United States Coast Guard and American Boat and Yacht Council.

Peer Pressure: San Juan 40

In the big business of boating, most builders are better at shuffling paper than sawing wood. That is why it was refreshing to meet Don Campbell and Randy McCurdy, owners of San Juan Yachts, who are more likely to be found out on the shop floor than behind a desk. The San Juan 40 Fly Bridge is their latest effort and one of just eight boats they will build this year. This hands-on, low volume, semi-custom approach is uncommon at this end of the market and the results are impressive.

Campbell and McCurdy dreamed of a company like San Juan Yachts as they were paying their dues in the boat business. Campbell served on the decks of two America’s Cup contenders that he helped build in the 1980s. He moved on to become general manager of Admiral Marine in 1995. This is where he met McCurdy, who was serving as production manager. The two shared their desire to build a boat their way and launched San Juan Yachts in 1998.

Their first boat was a 38-footer and would set the tone for later boats. While it is tempting to pigeonhole San Juan Yachts as a builder of New England-style lobster boats, their designs have a unique left-coast patina. Campbell and McCurdy called on British Columbia-based yacht designer Greg Marshall to shape the 38. “Originally we felt there was a market for a New England-style boat on the West Coast,” said Campbell. “When the phone began ringing we figured out pretty quickly that most of the business would be on the East Coast.”

At hull number sixty-five, Campbell and McCurdy still handle boat-show duty personally, representing their products and listening to customers. “People tell us what they like and what they don’t like. It’s important to hear it first hand,” said Campbell. Keeping their ear to the dock is what launched the 30- and 48-foot models and now the new 40FB.

So, it seemed fitting that I met Campbell and McCurdy at this past Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show to inspect the 40FB. Her dark-blue hull is shaped smartly with tumblehome aft and modest flare forward. A bright finished teak toe rail accents the traditional sweep of her sheer. Her softly shaped house and bridge lines create eye-pleasing balance. My first impression was of a classic 31-foot Bertram gone Downeast! When I mentioned this to McCurdy he smiled, considering it a compliment…as it was!

I easily got on board via her teaksheathed swim platform and stepped through the transom door. Her cockpit is laid out with transom seating and the engine boxes are fitted with cushions. A Lexan bulkhead with a tempered glass door separates her cockpit and helm area. Inside the air-conditioned space is a wet bar with an ice maker and a dinette with a teak tabletop that drops with the push of a button to form a berth. The interior helm station has a power Stidd seat and room for a reasonable complement of electronics. A teak ladder leads below. The galley area has a sink, a two-burner cooktop, and a microwave. Instead of a mass-produced marine or domestic refrigerator and freezer, the 40FB is fitted with front-loading, custom stainless steel refrigeration. There is a queen island berth forward and a head with a separate stall shower.

“While some of our owners will use the 40FB as a day boat, we designed her so that cruising couples could wander away from the dock for a week in comfort,” said McCurdy. The boat’s satin-finished teak interior is trimmed with quality soft goods and hardware. Fit and finish is well above average.

The Pacific Northwest was the cradle of lightweight fiberglass motoryacht construction. Located in Anacortes, Washington, San Juan Yachts has the advantage of this knowledge base and its 65,000-square-foot facility is home to 85 craftsmen. Like her sisters, the 40FB’s major tooling was sculpted by computer to exact tolerances. Her hull is built using an infusion process with vinylester resin, Kevlar, E-glass, and core-cell foam. The hull is divided structurally into four watertight compartments. Her house, bridge, and decks are built in the same fashion and no wood is used in her structure. Infusion, the process of drawing the resin into the reinforcement in a vacuum, allows the resin and glass ratios to be carefully controlled. This produces more consistent results and structural properties that would be difficult to achieve by hand lamination in a production environment. Exterior surfaces are finished with AlexSeal in a climate-controlled spray booth. Here again, the net result is well above average.

The 40FB is hard-chined and has a fine entry with slightly convex sections and a transom deadrise of 17 degrees. Moderate tunnels shelter about 1/3 of the prop diameter, and maximum draft at her prop tips and forefoot are equal, coming in at just two feet, two inches. With her tabs set at fifty percent, she rose evenly to plane. Pushing her throttles hard ahead generated an acceptable puff of smoke before the turbos on her 480-horsepower Yanmars took up the slack. She reached full turns in about twenty seconds. I recorded a maximum speed of 35.8 knots at her prescribed 3300 rpm. While she cruises nicely at higher speeds, she is most comfortable and quite efficient while turning 2400 rpm at 25.3 knots. She cuts tight turns predictably at speed, and with bow and stern thrusters she will be easy to wiggle around the dock. Her flying bridge has Stidd helm and companion seating as well as bench seating aft. My only complaint is that I found the tab buttons a bit hard to reach since they are hidden behind the engine controls. Relocating them shouldn’t be a problem.

While the 40FB is semi-custom, her specifications leave little to the imagination and it is worth noting that equipment and component selections are all first class.

“We’ve tried to include everything that most customers ask for,” said Campbell. “It makes pricing and production more efficient.” If there is something that you feel the 40FB lacks that is not standard or offered as an option, Campbell and McCurdy would like to know about it. They are the kind of boat builders that pay attention to their customers and that’s what makes the San Juan 40FB the sort of boat that deserves your attention.

Puerto Rico signs multimillion-dollar deal with Texas company to build a marina for mega yachts

  • Copy Link copied

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico’s government on Thursday signed a multimillion-dollar contract with a Texas-based company to build a marina for mega yachts in the capital of the U.S. territory.

Currently, two docks in San Juan are available to yachts and mega yachts, but there is limited space and basic services are not offered, Gov. Pedro Pierluisi said.

The new marina to be built by Safe Harbor Marinas, LLC will cover more than 180,000 square feet (67,000 square meters) and will be located in the two docks that currently accept yachts. It will be able to accommodate roughly six yachts at a time and will offer shore power and water connections, sanitary pumping and high-speed internet, Pierluisi said.

Safe Harbor Marinas will invest between $12 million and $15 million, the governor said.

The 40-year concession lease agreement calls for Puerto Rico’s Port Authority to receive $200,000 a year in rental fees. Safe Harbor Marinas also will share 5% of its gross income with the authority and 5% of net profits from fuel sales, officials said.

The deal also envisions construction of a business center, repair and recreational facilities, retail outlets and a boat supply store, among other things.

Pierluisi said the project is expected to generate more than $10 million a year in economic activity.

An average of nearly 30 yachts visit Puerto Rico a year, with officials saying the project is expected to attract up to 200 a year.

The first phase of the project is expected to start operating at the end of 2024 and the second phase by the end of 2025.

The San Juan 24

A fast quarter-tonner that can still compete in phrf, but numerous problems with construction quality would steer us elsewhere..

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Clark Boat Co. jumped on the trailer sailer bandwagon, and became a successful player in this decade-long market. Earlier, Bob and Carol Clark built Lightnings and ThistIes, and later, with the business in the hands of their son Don, the company built boats as large as 34 feet. The last boats came out of the shop in 1986, the year the company went out of business.

While the San Juan 21 trailer sailer really established the Clark Boat Co., it was the more performance-oriented boats such as the San Juan 24 and 7.7 that gave it the reputation of a successful builder of faster, under-3D-foot boats.

Puerto Rico enlists Texas company to build San Juan mega yacht marina

Officials project a near-700% increase in yacht traffic from project

Puerto Rico’s government on Thursday signed a multimillion-dollar contract with a  Texas-based company  to build a marina for mega yachts in the capital of the U.S. territory.

Currently, two docks in San Juan are available to yachts and mega yachts, but there is limited space and basic services are not offered,  Gov. Pedro Pierluisi  said.

The new marina to be built by Safe Harbor Marinas, LLC will cover more than 180,000 square feet and will be located in the two docks that currently accept yachts.

ECONOMIC OVERSIGHT BOARD UNVEILS PUERTO RICO GROWTH BLUEPRINT

The deal also envisions construction of a business center, repair and recreational facilities, retail outlets and a boat supply store, among other things.

Pierluisi said the project is expected to generate more than $10 million a year in economic activity.

An average of nearly 30 yachts visit  Puerto Rico  a year, with officials saying the project is expected to attract up to 200 a year.

Guided Flotillas!

Guided flotilla rafted in Melanie Cove

You can explore new cruising grounds with confidence, having an expert flotilla leader and the camaraderie of fellow boaters, or share familiar cruising grounds with the companionship of new faces! Our flotillas give you as much privacy or togetherness as you like. Each day you can cruise together with the flotilla or separately. You are welcome to raft to other boats in the group, or seek solitude in your own corner of an anchorage. You can join your cruise mates for evening hors d’oeuvres after exploring shore-side trails, poking your dinghy (or a kayak) into tiny inlets, or enjoy a relaxing evening watching the shadows of the evergreens stretch into the water.

What are the benefits of flotilla cruising?

Flotillas are an ideal setting to gain confidence and familiarize yourself with new cruising grounds, while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow cruisers. Your flotilla leader serves as a knowledgeable guide, providing skills “coaching” and docking or anchoring assistance as needed. Have a question? Assistance is always there.

In addition to safety and guidance, your flotilla leader(s) provide history and in some cases naturalist briefings on each cruising area. For example, each day’s cruise begins with a weather report and a chart briefing. They’ll review your destination and course and highlight both hazards and special natural scenes en route. In addition you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the history of each area, the original peoples, the Spanish and English explorations of the region, and even anchor in the same coves as George Vancouver.

In other words, it’s the best of both worlds as we help one another moor, point out wildlife, avoid rocks and reefs, and share prawns, oysters and crab straight from the sea.

Broughton Islands Flotilla Image

Spring Guided Flotilla: The Broughton Islands

31 days. may 22 – june 21, 2024, this trip takes advantage of several of our "10 days of charter for the price of 7 days" special date sets).

Join us for an adventure to the pristine Broughton Islands Archipelago. Adjacent to the Northeast coast of Vancouver Island, this area is an expanse of natural beauty, secluded anchorages and towering snowcapped mountains. Be transported back in time and picture life in this sparsely populated region of the world. Witness wildlife in its natural setting. Embrace life “off the grid”, away from the hectic, modern world.

This flotilla is structured to leave Bellingham and make it to to Port McNeil in less than ten days. Then we'll reprovision and spend nearly two weeks exploring the Broughton Islands. We’ll return to Port McNeil, reprovision again, then make the journey back to Bellingham in 7-9 days.

Specific destinations are yet to be determined but we anticipate exploring both the popular spots and some more out of the way anchorages. It is likely that our route will include Dent Rapids, Kwatsi Bay, Lagoon Cove, Echo Bay, Simoom Sound, Telegraph Cove, and Sullivan Bay. Port McNeil will be a planned point to reprovision and change crew members as needed. You will learn to navigate the challenges of Johnstone Strait. And along the way, there will be plenty of time to enjoy the natural beauty of this incredible cruising ground.

As the Broughton Islands are 250 nm from Bellingham, transit legs to get up there and back may include some legs with +40 nm days. Depending on the cruise speed of your vessel, that can mean days where you are underway for +6 hours. The routing will accommodate most charter vessels and it will be more a matter of planning and endurance for those handful of days where long legs are a necessity. Sailing is always encouraged although the winds / current can affect your progress and ETA. At the end of each day, the entire flotilla will arrive at the same destination so you will never be alone or out of touch.

  • Bareboat Charter: Charter the boat of your choice (required minimum cruising speed of 7 knots), plus flotilla fee ($1200/boat). Click to view the sail fleet or the power fleet .
  • Private Boats: You are welcome to join our flotillas on your own private boat (minimum cruising speed of 7 kn) provided there is space available. Flotilla fee of $1200/boat.
  • One-way Charter: Can’t get away for the whole period? Call to inquire about potential vessels that may be chartered for three weeks and dropped off in Port McNeil at the end of three weeks. The vessel owner would take care of getting the vessel back to Bellingham.

Note: Be sure to pack your passports to clear customs in to Canada. Minimum of 5 boats booked for the flotilla to be a “go”. (Limit 8 boats.) So book soon!

Mobile boat works

Shelter Island’s Driscoll Boat Works is rolling out a new 150-ton mobile hoist from Wisconsin-based marina boat handling equipment maker Marine Travelift .

The company said upgrading the hoist marks the start of a $4.5 million renovation project that includes lease renewal negotiations with the Port of San Diego .

The hoist, which replaces the old one in use since 1992, will boost efficiency and productivity at the boatyard, according to a news release.

The new, larger hoist is designed to meet California’s environmental standards.

The boatyard’s renovation features extensive improvements such as adding 200 feet of wharf and installing 7,000 square feet of solar panels.

Other parts of the plan call for even more renovations, which will include adding 200 linear feet of marginal wharf, resurfacing the existing concrete yard, building two new enclosed boat sheds and installing 7,000 square feet of solar panels.

A spokesperson for Driscoll said the 77-year-old business is excited about improving the facility and is looking forward to continuing its partnership with the port.

Gerald Driscoll founded the facility in 1947 and the site has been family-owned and operated for three generations, according to the release.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has appointed highly regarded businessman and civic leader Phil Blair to an agency that runs the San Diego County Fair .

Blair fills a vacant position on the nine-member 22nd District Agricultural Association Board , which owns and operates the Del Mar Fairgrounds .

Blair is joining the board three months before the start of the 2024 fair, which is one of the biggest annual community celebrations in the region.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Blair is one of San Diego’s “most visible and respected business leaders.” Along with partner Mel Katz , the two have built Manpower of San Diego into the largest Manpower franchise in the U.S. with annual sales exceeding $150 million.

The U.S. Department of Energy will commit up to $72.8 million in  loan guarantees to finance development of a solar storage  microgrid  on lands owned by the Viejas Band of the Kumeyaay Indians in Alpine. The commitment is first through the  Tribal Energy Financing Program , which was expanded under an act of Congress.

The act takes the largest action on climate and clean energy in American history, providing funding for tribes adapting to climate change, according to a news release.

The project will provide the tribe with reliable renewable energy and storage with the installation of a 15 MW photovoltaic solar generation system and a 38 MWh battery storage system.

This project is expected to create 250 construction jobs and eight permanent jobs.

The project has previously received more than $30 million through a grant from the state Energy Commission .

The local nonprofit consortium Life Science Cares San Diego has released its 2023 Impact Report , outlining the organization’s extensive community efforts during the year.

In a news release, the organization said it aimed to increase local community members’ access to “needs, education, and opportunity by harnessing resources provided by members of the local life science community.”

Life Science Cares is a collective effort of the local life sciences industry to reduce the impact of poverty in the community.

Nearly 613,000 residents are living in poverty, and this is increasing due to the impact of Covid-19, according to its website.

The nonprofit awarded more than $1.2 million in grants to area nonprofits, aided 3,000 students with educational access, provided more than 180,000 meals, facilitated connections for over 3,000 under-resourced youth with professional opportunities in the life science industry and helped more than 100 residents with rental and housing support.

Executive director Leane Marchese said in response to the report, “We are incredibly proud to present our Impact Report for 2023, which serves as a testament to the collective efforts and unwavering dedication of our organization and community to erase poverty.”

With hubs in Boston, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco and New York, the nonprofit said it has invested $16.2 million and tens of thousands of volunteer hours in various communities.

The boutique 23-room Pearl Hotel in San Diego has been rated among the top 50 hotels nationwide, as recognized by the travel magazine  Fifty Grande .

The list of hotels was part of the publication’s first “Greatest Hotels Ever” awards, as nominated by readers.

Properties selected had to be located in the U.S., charging rates under $350 per night.

Local architect Robert Platt designed the property in the late 1950s and the facility operated as Sportsman’s Lodge throughout the 1960s.

The overall  Wall Beds Market  is projected to increase by $1.05 billion over the five years between 2022 to 2027. This represents an annual compound growth rate of 6.5%, according to a new report from market researcher technavio .

One of the beneficiaries of this growth include Murphy Beds of San Diego .

The Technavio report noted that the wall beds market is fragmented owing to the presence of many global and regional companies.

According to a quick search on the internet, Murphy Beds is a family-owned furniture store located on Miramar Road.

Finally, this bit of cheer.

The state’s single-family housing market continued to demonstrate resilience in February, reaching sales levels not seen since September 2022, the state’s influential California Association of Realtors said in a new report released this week.

The news was even better for San Diego’s housing market.

The median price of a home sold in San Diego was $980,00 in February, up nearly 6% from the $925,000 median price in January, and up nearly 12% from the median sales price of $878,000 in February of last year.

Home sales jumped 21% month over month, according to the report.

Statewide, the median price recorded a good year-over-year gain in February, gaining 10% in 2023 to $806,490 in February 2024 from $735,300 in February 2023.

The Golden State’s median home price was 2.2 percent higher than January’s $789,480. The near-double-digit, year-over-year gain was the eighth straight month of annual price increases for the Golden State, the report said.

February’s sales pace jumped 12.8 percent higher from the revised 257,040 homes sold in January and rose 1.3% from a year ago.

Business | Status Update: Bass Pro Shops’ Outdoor World finally has an opening day

san juan yachts out of business

Orange County’s first Bass Pro Shops’ Outdoor World is opening at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 27 in Irvine.

A ceremony Wednesday is invite-only, with the full store opening Thursday to the public.

The outfitter known for its cavernous shop of all-things outdoorsy has been working around the clock to convert a shuttered Walmart Supercenter into a giant lodge.

Shoppers and motorists along Technology Drive and the 5 freeway in Irvine have likely been watching the progress for nearly two years now. The Walmart closed in 2021. A year later in February 2022, property owner Irvine Co. said it had scored a new tenant for the sprawling space. Bass Pro was expected by early 2023, the landlord said at the time.

In recent months, peaked roofs appeared atop the building at 71 Technology Drive, and just weeks ago, enormous oval signs proclaiming Bass Pro Outdoor World were raised front and back.

The 140,000-square-foot Outdoor World will tout and experience like few others in retail. The typical Outdoor World opens to a soaring clerestory decorated with wildlife dioramas in front of murals of local destinations. Myriad aisles will be packed with apparel, gadgets, tools, shoes, ATVs, boats and trailers for fishing, camping, hiking and hunting enthusiasts.

And if your children get bored among all the stuff, you can park them in front of enormous aquariums stocked with hundreds of fish.

The nearest Outdoor World was a trek for Orange County residents, nearly 45 miles to the north alongside the 15 freeway and adjacent to the Victoria Gardens shopping mall in Rancho Cucamonga .

Representatives with Bass Pro told us last week that more details would be forthcoming about its “Evening for Conservation” and grand opening.

Stay tuned!

Midway City buys first EV for sanitation district

Midway City Sanitary District has purchased its first all-electric vehicle.

The city paid $32,548.63 for 2023 Chevy Bolt, which it will use for various business services including audits on residential trash containers.

Officials tell us the car has been wrapped with information for residents, reminding them to sort their trash accordingly (blue for recyclables, green for organics and black for garbage).

The EV is part of a broader mission by the sanitation district to go green.

MCSD’s fleet of collection trucks also run “clean,” using natural gas created from methane gas pulled from green waste. Recently installed solar panels on the district’s parking lot will provide power to the office and yard.

The fleet will gradually switch to EVs, part of a state mandate to clean up emissions across the state.

Mail carrier milestones

Three Laguna Niguel mail carriers for the US Postal Service were honored in late February for driving three million miles without an accident in the city limits.

The honorees are Adam Dube, Sherry Garrett and Charles Jensen, all of whom have at least 30 years as mail carriers with USPS.

Each driver got a plaque and automatic membership to the National Safety Council “Million Mile Club.”

Kim honored with lifetime achievement award

Frank Kim, a board member at Orange County’s Credit Union in Santa Ana, recently was honored by the Orange County Business Council with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Kim has been a board member since 2006, bringing his experience in budgeting, strategic planning and managerial finance to the credit union.

“Frank’s dedication and leadership have been instrumental in shaping Orange County’s Credit Union into the community-focused institution it is today,” said Kathy Jumper, the credit union’s CEO. “His legacy of service and commitment to our Members’ financial well-being will continue to inspire us all.”

Private Luxury Sailing Experience out of Old San Juan

10/10 experience!! Rented for myself and 6 bridesmaids for my bachelorette and had the best time ever! Service was exceptional and booking process was so easy. This is the boat to book while you’re in Puerto Rico!

Amazing communication and wonderful experience on the boat. Everyone had a great time! The boat itself was also incredible! Thanks for everything!

John

The Blue Doubloon was an amazing time for my best friends bachelor party. We had a group of 11 and the bareboat was perfect, we cruised around the bay for a bit and did some swimming before cruising the the Atlantic for a bit. The captain and crew couldn't have been more accommodating, i would highly recommend booking this boat!

The boat was better than I expected. Our crew captain krista and David were AMAZING!!!!! And super accommodating to the BEST of her abilities. If you are sailing with Todd you will not be disappointed and captain krista is the best request her highly recommended. Boat was clean, everyone super friendly. I had an amazing time that you for making my birthday experience great.

We couldn't have booked a better boat! Our group outing was for a sunset sail for 3.5 hours. The communication prior to the excursion was excellent, the directions to get to the marina location were straightforward, the boat was just as described and was fully equipped with a cooler, fridge, ice, yeti cups and bowls/plates for the food we brought. Krista and Kyle were an amazing captain and crew! They educated us on some of the history of Puerto Rico and took all the photos we could have ever wanted. It did rain a bit during our ride, but that didn't stop us from having fun as we just went under the covered portion of the boat for awhile to hang out. We got to see the sunset, a rainbow, and they even took us out a bit longer than originally planned as we were waiting for a cruise ship to pass by. I would highly recommend this boat, captain and crew—it was certainly the highlight of our trip!
