The best pictures of Koru

In 2022, the 125.8-metre sailing yacht Koru made history when she hit the water at Oceanco ’s Alblasserdam facilities. Now successfully delivered, she is the flagship of the Oceanco fleet and the largest Dutch-built yacht in the world.

Koru unable to dock in Florida

Koru arrived at Port Everglades, Florida in November 2023 following a months-long Mediterranean cruise that included stopovers in Dubrovnik, Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer and Calabria (according to BOATPro ). The sailing yacht was too large to anchor in the nearby marina, which has a maximum capacity of 121.9 metres. She was photographed instead docking next to a 297-metre cruise ship named Rhapsody of the Seas .

Last summer, Koru was spotted in the French Riveria alongside her 75-metre support vessel Abeona . Delivered by Damen Yachting two months before the mothership, Abeona is equipped with a helipad and hangar for a D14 value helicopter– which is clearly being put to good use. Accommodation is for up to 45 people onboard Bezos' support vessel, including crew, guests and other specialist staff.

Koru and Abeona also travelled to Portofino in the summer of 2023, with both Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez sighted enjoying lunch and taking photographs while on board.

Throughout construction, it was difficult to get a glimpse of the details on board Koru ; but once handed over, all of her traditional features could be admired up close. As well as the intricate gold paintwork and scarlet bootstripe, the yacht also features an elaborate figurehead made of polished wood. The woman is wearing a necklace with a symbol in the pendant, which some have speculated could be the Māori symbol meaning "koru".

After delivery, the schooner spent some time enjoying the waters of Mallorca. The Balearic hotspot is a magnet for superyachts during the Mediterranean season, but Koru had the quiet anchorage largely to herself after leaving the Oceanco shipyard. Her classic lines could be appreciated in all of their glory against the backdrop of Palma Cathedral.

In April 2023. Koru was delivered and undertook her maiden voyage from the Netherlands to Gibraltar. She then headed onwards to Palma, giving the world a first glimpse of her cascading aft decks, mighty masts and elaborate aft deck pool arrangement. She was flying solo in Mallorca, but was later joined by support vessel Abeona .

Following her successful sea trials in Rotterdam, Koru embarked on journey to Palma, Mallorca that involved an overnight anchorage in Gibraltar. The sailing yacht was sighted passing through the Strait of Gibraltar a second time on her cross-continental journey from the Mediterranean to the USA in November 2023.

Koru was spotted departing from Rotterdam in the early morning light of February 13 to begin sea trials. The 125.8-metre Oceanco set sail across the North Sea to put her performance to the test after hitting the water for the first time in August 2022. The traditional three-masted schooner yacht has a midnight blue hull, traditional canoe stern and the unique addition of a chair at the very tip of the bowsprit. Her name represents the idea of life’s perpetual movement and is a Māori word closely related to that of an unfurling leaf.

The yacht was seen for the first time in her final form on the dock in the Port of Rotterdam. Her trio of masts was stepped here to avoid having to dismantle any bridges to allow the Oceanco giant yacht to pass under. The maximum height of the bridge is 70 metres; the masts on Koru are thought to measure between 65 and 85 metres. The first images of Koru indicate the yacht will have plenty of features for her owner to enjoy, including an aft deck pool and a large, uncluttered sundeck.

The 125.8-metre yacht was moved from Oceanco’s primary facilities at the crack of dawn to enter the final stages of construction. The hull was transported via Dordrecht and Spijkenisse (Oude Maas), and her masts were transported separately via the slightly shorter Rotterdam Centre (Nieuwe Maas).

Before she hit the water, the hull of Koru was loaded onto a transport vessel and she made the journey through the Dutch canals for further construction work. The yacht was captured against the backdrop of the quaint Dutch countryside, revealing her classic-looking lines and long rows of windows.

As she was wheeled out of the shed into the light of day, yacht-spotters were able to get their first proper aerial shot of the yacht, without her masts.

When Oceanco completed the work on the hull, the yacht was rolled out of the shed to reveal a crisp navy hull and white superstructure. Koru ’s exterior design immediately drew a comparison to Lürssen’s 93-metre sailing yacht Eos , which was designed by US-based Langan Design . This was the world’s first sighting of the already iconic superyacht.

After all the fuss over his suggestively shaped space rocket, it seems Jeff Bezos is still obsessed with the idea that size really matters.

The world’s third-richest man (behind Elon Musk and LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault) is building a megayacht in Holland on a scale so excessive that it looks like the boat from “Gulliver’s Travels” washing up on the island of Liliput.

To get out of the Rotterdam harbor where it is being built, a bridge will have to be dismantled.

The $500 million Y721 will be, at 417 feet long, the biggest sailing yacht in the world when it launches this summer. In a pissing match with other tech billionaires — Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison and media mogul and new People magazine owner Barry Diller — Bezos, 58, wins.

In fact, even his yacht’s secondary support boat is bigger than Brin’s elegantly futuristic $80 million yacht, the Dragonfly.

The Y721’s main vessel boasts three decks — one with a swimming pool — and, with three gigantic masts, it can claim eco-credentials by being powered largely via a cutting-edge propulsion system that harnesses kinetic energy under sail.

Still, the Y721 will cost around $25 million a year to run. There is space for 18 guests on board, and it will require a crew of 40. Inside, it is said to be modeled on Diller’s yacht, Eos (a favorite of celebrity friends including Kate Perry, Prince Harry and Bradley Cooper) — although Eos stretches out a mere 305 feet. (When Diller bought it, the boat was the largest private sailing yacht in the world.) Ellison’s Musashi, meanwhile, comes in at 288 feet, while Brin’s Dragonfly is just 240 feet.

The half-billion price tag is a relative drop in the ocean for the Amazon founder, whose net worth was valued at $181 billion by Forbes this week.

And yet, not everyone is impressed.

“If I was Jeff Bezos I would have gone for something a bit more radical, but it is a big yacht, which I guess is the point,” said Russell Crump, an independent broker of bespoke yachts. “It will be beautiful . . . Oceanco are the biggest and the best builders in Holland.”

The key word there is “biggest”: Even without the masts, Bezos’ yacht reportedly stands at over 131 feet tall, meaning Oceanco will have to temporarily dismantle the Konigshaven Bridge, known as De Hef, to allow the boat to pass. 

Local authorities are expected to debate the request later this month, while a petition against it has been launched by local opponents (who have threatned to pelt the boat with rotten eggs) and collected more than 58,000 signatures.

“This man has earned his money by structurally cutting staff, evading taxes, avoiding regulations and now we have to tear down our beautiful national monument?” Rotterdam politician Stephan Leewis tweeted of Bezos. “That is really going a bridge too far.”

Oceanco declined to confirm that Bezos had commissioned the new boat.

But will Bezos be able to top the others in the name department? One suggestion: The Compensator.

Jeff Bezos' new megayacht set sail this summer, with the founder and former Amazon CEO and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez crisscrossing Europe to show it off.

At 417 feet long, the vessel is the world's largest sailing yacht and cost an estimated $500 million. The yacht is named Koru , which means "loop" or "coil" in the Māori language and often signifies new beginnings.

Koru joins a large class of flashy billionaires' yachts , including the 305-foot-long Eos, which belongs to billionaire Barry Diller and fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.

Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison owns a yacht called Musashi, which is 288 feet long.

Bezos commissioned the enormous boat from the Dutch custom yacht builder Oceanco, and it took years to construct.

In February, the yacht underwent its first sea trials, a series of tests usually conducted in the last phases of construction. Koru made its maiden voyage in April, traveling from the Netherlands to Gibraltar.

The vessel has a pool on deck, and the prow features a mermaid sculpture that bears a striking resemblance to Bezos' then-girlfriend Sanchez. A second "support yacht," which has an on-deck helipad, accompanies Koru on its travels.

Sanchez has said the sculpture affixed to Bezos' yacht isn't her. "I'm very flattered, but it's not," she told Vogue. The sculpture is apparently of the Norse goddess Freyja, one of Bezos' favorite figures from mythology.

Bezos and Sanchez were first seen aboard the yacht along the coast of Spain in May, shortly before news broke that the couple had gotten engaged. The couple spent the rest of the summer on board traveling to various destinations, stopping at the Cannes Film Festival, sailing down the Italian Riviera, and making their way to Croatia.

In August, the yacht played host to an engagement party for Bezos and Sanchez , which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Whitney Wolfe Herd, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

While yacht season was apparently enjoyable for the couple, it was only after the vessel stirred up quite a bit of controversy: Koru's masts were so tall that the yacht nearly required the dismantling of a historic bridge in the Netherlands in order for it to pass through.

Locals planned to egg Bezos' superyacht if the bridge came down. Following the public outcry, Oceanco withdrew its request for the city to take apart the bridge.

And despite this massive purchase, Bezos' net worth is still well over $100 billion.

Has the World Finally Had a Glimpse of Jeff Bezos’s $500 Million Mega-Yacht?

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is appears to be getting closer to welcoming the superyacht he reportedly commissioned in 2018: a fancy toy fitting for the world’s second-richest person, given that it costs a reported $500 million and breaks one world record after another.

Called Y721, this vessel of all vessels is being custom designed by Dutch builder Oceanco and was spotted at a shipyard last week in Zwijndrecht, a town in the western Netherlands. It’s reportedly heading to another Netherlands town, Alblasserdam, for a final fitting. With a length of 417 feet, Y721 is the biggest sailing yacht in the world and the longest vessel to be built in the Netherlands. Features include a black hull, classic shape, three large decks, and three masts.

Superyacht Bravo Eugenia , belonging to the U.S. billionaire Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, was built by Oceanco, which is also rumored to be behind Bezos’s new massive vessel.

Y721 is going to totally change the world of yachting with its design and innovation, says Fernando Nicholson, a luxury yacht sales broker with the yachting company Camper & Nicholsons. “It’s a boat with the latest technology and bells and whistles that have never been seen,” he says. “This will be the standard for all superyachts to follow, but in years to come, when its features become more affordable. Right now, only someone with Bezos’s wealth can swing the cost.”

The superyacht is said to be modeled after Oceanco’s famous yacht, the Black Pearl , which the company site says , “is one of the largest and most ecological sailing yachts in the world. She can cross the Atlantic without burning even a liter of fossil fuel.” Y721 will go through sea trails following its fitting-out in Alblasserdam and is expected to be ready sometime next year.

However, it’s only one of two new boats for Bezos: He has also commissioned a shadow vessel called YS 7512 from builder Damen Yachts. This support ship measures 246 feet in length and accommodates 45 additional crew and guests. It will also feature a helipad and meeting space and have a vast amount of storage for Bezos’s endless number of water toys, with diving and snorkeling gear, jet and water skis, waterslides, and surfboards among the bunch. Shadow vessels are a growing phenomenon in the superyacht industry and one more extra toy that their owners want to have at the ready, says Nicholson. “You see them more and more now as an add-on to a superyacht purchase,” he says. “They’ve almost become a must.”

There’s no doubt that Bezos will be sailing the high seas in full panache and style come 2022. But really, is there any other way when you have more money than almost anyone else in the world and attract an endless amount of attention too?

Comparing superyachts: Jeff Bezos’ Y721 vs Steve Jobs’ ‘Venus’

A while back, we heard the news about Jeff Bezos’ new $500 million super yacht that is going to be so big it will have its own yacht. In fact, it will require the disassembly of a historic bridge in order to pass through and make it to the ocean. Let’s compare how Amazon founder’s vessel resembles and differences from the yacht built for Apple cofounder: now deceased Steve Jobs. 

Bezos’ superyacht has sparked more controversy lately as it is reportedly too big to fit underneath the historic Koningshaven Bridge in Rotterdam . This structure dates back to 1879, and although bombed by the Nazis in World War II , it was rebuilt after the war. 

News that it must be partially disassembled for the Bezos-owned vessel has angered local residents. According to Dutch News.nl, the bridge was renovated in 2017 and city officials promised it would not be disassembled again. 

How does the Y721 differentiate from Venus, now owned by Steve Jobs’ family? We will be looking at its length, cost, construction, design and current location. 

Jeff Bezos’ yacht, codenamed Y721, measures 127 metres in length. Once it is launched later on this year, it will be the world’s largest sailing yacht. Yacht built for Jobs, Venus, is smaller: 78.2 metres, a bit over half as long as Bezos. 

While building Venus, the entire project was surrounded by secrecy. However, in the case of the Y721, information regarding the project first came from Brad Stone’s book “Amazon Unbound”.  

Construction materials and features

The Y721 sailing vessel is made from both aluminium and steel , and is being built at the moment in the Netherlands by famous privately owned custom yacht shipyard Oceanco. Bezos commissioned the yacht in 2018, and the first glimpse was made in 2021. 

This superyacht will be a sailing ship with three massive masts that aids its movement. So far, it is not clear whether it has a backup diesel propulsion, but it is likely it does for electric power. Previously, Oceanco has built other sailing yacht designs (like the famous Black Pearl) that are powerful and ecologically friendly, so it is most likely Amazon’s founder will also aim for an environmentally-friendly yacht. 

On the other side, diesel powered Venus has been constructed out of lightweight aluminium and features glass windows along its hull. The ship was designed by Philippe Starck and was built at Headship, launched in 2012, a year after Jobs died. This means the late Apple cofounder never set foot on the vessel. 

Venus is a motor-powered ship that features a pair of MTU 16V 4000 M73 Marine Diesel engines and has a maximum speed of 22 knots. 

Cost of the vessels

Jeff bezos’ vessel is 4 times more expensive than steve jobs’. .

The Y721 wins as the most expensive one, with a big price tag of €430 million, or about $485 million. Venus on the other side was constructed at a cost of €105 million euros, or about $118 million at the time. With current inflation, the cost now would be about $128 million. 

Design features

The Y721 has a black hull and white superstructure, with an overall design aesthetic described as “classic” by the boating community. According to “Amazon Unbound”, the superyacht is “one of the finest sailing yachts in existence” and it will feature “several decks and three enormous masts”. Moreover, it will have a secondary support boat built alongside the main ship. 

On the other hand, Venus is more on the sports, high-tech aesthetic. It features a modern white design with aluminium and glass, as well as various details expected from a ship co-designed by Jobs himself.

In Apple fashion, several innovative features make Venus stand out . There is a false top deck that conceals antennas and receivers, and there is also an extensive glass window that surrounds its exterior. Regarding its interior design, this is a close secret.

We know the Y721 is being constructed at the Oceanco shipyard in Alblasserdam , about 20 kilometres away from Rotterdam. The only route to the sea is past the Koningshaven Bridge. 

As it has yet to launch, Y721 has not been in open waters, and it is still unclear as to why the shipbuilding firm has built this vessel in a yard that would require the disassembly of the bridge. Specially because the mast height and draft was known before the construction work began. 

Venus was also built in The Netherlands, however, at the Koninklijke De Vries shipyards owned by Feadship in the dutch city of Aalsmeer . Since launched in 2012, it has sailed across the world and is spotted in various ports. Currently the yacht is owned by Steve Jobs’ widow, Laurene Powell Jobs.

Jeff Bezos’ Giant Yacht Is Apparently Too Big to Anchor Near Others in Florida

The superyacht, called Koru, arrived in Port Everglades in Florida on Nov. 22, and has been docked near a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State.

First, Jeff Bezos’ new megayacht was too big to pass under a bridge in the Netherlands. Now, the massive vessel’s size — it’s more than 400 feet long — has played a role in preventing it from keeping company with other private yachts in Port Everglades, Fla., where it is anchored.

Instead, the megayacht, named Koru, is hanging with huge oil tankers and general container ships. The yacht is docked there because of its size and also because of what berths were available in the seaport, according to a spokeswoman for Port Everglades.

Koru is a sailing yacht, unlike the much bigger diesel-powered boats popular with other billionaires. It is the largest sailing yacht in the world, according to Oceanco , the Dutch company that finished building the boat earlier this year.

The deck space of the three-masted schooner has three Jacuzzis and a swimming pool. The inside has a “timeless, contemporary style,” according to Oceanco, with natural wood tones, warm neutrals, and patterned textiles. It also includes a mermaid on the bow that appears to resemble Mr. Bezos’ partner, Lauren Sánchez.

Koru, which Bloomberg estimated cost about $500 million to build, arrived to the Florida port on Nov. 22 after departing from Gibraltar earlier this month, according to Marine Traffic , a real-time maritime data platform.

It was unclear why exactly Mr. Bezos docked his yacht there, but earlier this month he said that he would be moving back to Miami to be closer to his parents and to Ms. Sánchez.

Mr. Bezos had since 1994 lived in Seattle , where he started Amazon from his garage. He has already purchased two mansions in South Florida, one for $68 million and another for $79 million, according to Bloomberg News .

Bloomberg estimated his net worth to be $171 billion.

Port Everglades charges yachts larger than 400 feet at least $309.50 per 24 hours. Ships that have been closest to Koru include a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State .

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and has come to symbolize new life, growth, and peace in traditional Maori art.

Mr. Bezos’ journey with his new yacht started off rocky . Last year, city officials in Rotterdam, the Dutch city, initially agreed to dismantle De Hef, a 95-year-old bridge, so that Koru could pass through it from the nearby city where it had been built. The dismantling process would have taken more than a day, and putting it back together would have too. But after uproar from the community — including calls to throw eggs at the boat as it would have passed — Oceanco decided against it and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Jeff Bezos’ Magnificent KORU Yacht and ABEONA Support Vessel

The Marvel of Modern Yacht Design: KORU Yacht

The superyacht Koru , a gargantuan technological and nautical achievement courtesy of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos , has sailed into the U.S.

The epic sailing yacht is 417-feet long (127 m) and features three carbon fiber masts that are a staggering 230 feet (70 m) high.

The ship has been under intense scrutiny since its inception, both because of its famous owner, but also because of its size and engineering capability. Koru is so large, in fact, that its builder Oceanco had to sneak the ship out of Rotterdam at night, without its masts attached, in order to both avoid media attention and fit it under the famous Koningshaven Bridge. The bridge, an invaluable WWII landmark known as 'De Hef,' was set to be dismantled to allow Koru to pass through (with its masts attached) before a public outcry derailed the original plans.

After Bezos finally took delivery of the $500 million megayacht in April, it has remained hidden in the Mediterranean. It was last spotted a few weeks ago off the coast of Gibraltar before seemingly making its way across the Atlantic. On Tuesday, Koru arrived at port in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, marking the first time the boat has been stateside and the first time the public has seen her up close.

Due to her size, the boat is being kept alongside cruise ships and tankers at the commercial sea port rather than among the private superyachts that typically dot the Florida coastline. For the time being, it's resting alongside the Liberty of the Seas cruise ship -- one of the few vessels that can make Koru look small with its own 1112-foot length.

Not only does Koru carry a massive 417-foot hull length, it also has a whopping 56-foot (17 m) beam and a 14-foot (4.2 m) draught, making it extremely unlikely to ever access a non-commercial sea port.

The other shocking detail surrounding Koru is the magnitude of her 'support vessel,' the Abeona . Both vessels travel together, with the Abeona serving as the complementary vessel for crew accommodations and for transporting Bezos' various water toys. Abeona is 246-feet (75 m) long and is currently docked a few miles away in nearby Dania Beach.

Bezos and his fiancé Lauren Sanchez have been spotted cruising the Mediterranean in recent months, although understandably they've been trying to avoid detection by switching off the AIS tracker on Koru . With no AIS signal, the vessel can avoid having its GPS coordinates broadcast publicly.

Residents of Florida may start seeing Koru more often as Bezos recently confirmed he's purchased property in the Miami area near his parents. Bezos' space company Blue Origin also recently opened a launch facility at Cape Canaveral and a rocket assembly facility in Brevard County -- both in central Florida on the eastern coast.

“They recently moved back to Miami, the place we lived when I was younger,” Bezos recently said on Instagram. “I want to be close to my parents.”

The fifth most expensive celebrity-owned yacht is The Maraya, a property of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs , which had an approximate cost of $65 million in 2012.

Giorgio Armani

Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani sits in 6th place with the “Main.” It cost $64 Million and took 30 months to build. The vessel accommodates up to 12 people in its 7 cabins, in addition to hosting 14 crew members.

Jackie Chan

Legendary actor Jackie Chan takes the 7th spot with his yacht, Jinlong 4601. Under construction since October 2017, he purchased the superyacht for $46 Million in 2019.

The World’s 2nd Largest Sailing Yacht, Built by Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos, is Currently Here

You know you live in an amazing place when the world’s 2nd largest, newly-built sailing yacht chooses your backyard as its first vacation destination in the United States.

Koru is a 416-foot sailing yacht that was commissioned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. It reportedly cost $500 million to build and is accompanied by Abeona, its 246-foot support vessel. Both boats are currently anchored near Mingo Cay, which is roughly a five-minute boat ride from Cruz Bay. This is the same area where The Rising Sun, David Geffen’s 453-foot mega yacht, spent time last month. (Click here to read that story.)

Koru, a Maori word meaning “new beginnings”, is the largest boat ever built in the Netherlands. It was delivered in April and spent time in the Mediterranean before making the 4,400-mile crossing to the United States. It arrived in Ft. Lauderdale on November 22nd where it was forced to dock in a seaport beside oil tankers and a cruise ship due to its massive size. It arrived in St. Thomas on December 5th and spent five days in Charlotte Amalie before sailing over to us.

Koru is reportedly one of the most ecological megayachts in the world due to its sails and technology on board.

Abeona, its “dinghy”, will serve as a support boat, essentially a toy hauler. It will carry luxury cars, smaller boats, a helicopter, and additional crew.

Is this boat excessive? Yes. Did many of us shop way too often on Amazon, which in a way contributed to its creation? Yes. However it is a beautifully-designed sailboat, and it’s pretty darn cool that they chose to come here for their first vacation on this side of the world. Those of us who call St. John home are pretty darn lucky, and those of you who are able to visit this beautiful island are pretty darn lucky too.

Jeff bezos is the richest man in florida, according to forbes.

MIAMI - Forbes recently published a list of the richest billionaire in every state – and Jeff Bezos tops the list in the Sunshine State.

The 60-year-old Amazon founder and CEO has an estimated worth of $194 billion, according to Forbes. The only person richer than him, according to the list, is Elon Musk. The Tesla and SpaceX frontman has an estimated worth of $195 billion.

In 2023, the richest person in Florida was hedge fund manager Ken Griffin with an estimated worth of $32.7 billion, according to Forbes .

Bezos is new to Florida, however. The billionaire announced his move from Seattle to Miami back in November.

"I want to be close to my parents, and Lauren and I love Miami. Also, Blue Origin’s operations are increasingly shifting to Cape Canaveral. "I’ve lived in Seattle longer than I’ve lived anywhere else and have so many amazing memories here. As exciting as the move is, it’s an emotional decision for me. Seattle, you will always have a piece of my heart."

Amazon founder and chairman Jeff Bezos, who has an estimated net worth of $199.6 billion, is once again the second-wealthiest person in the world as of Thursday, overtaking Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has an estimated net worth of $197.4 billion, and marking the second switch of the week for the battling billionaires.

After jostling for the position of second-wealthiest person in the world more than a dozen times in ... [+] March, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are competing closely once again.

Bezos overtook Musk Thursday after losing his position as wealthiest person in the U.S. to him on Monday, following a surge in Tesla stock that vaulted Musk above Bezos and made him about $25 billion richer than he was just six days prior.

Bezos’ estimated net worth was up about $2.5 billion on Thursday at noon EDT, while Musk’s fortune had fallen about $276 million, according to the Forbes Real-Time Billionaire List .

The wealthiest person in the world is still LVMH’s Bernard Arnault, who was worth an estimated $206.9 billion as of Thursday morning.

1.84%. That’s how much Amazon’s stock was up at noon EDT on Thursday. Tesla’s share price, in comparison, was up about 0.08%.

The two billionaires have been going back-and-forth for the position of second wealthiest person in the world for months—they flip-flopped at least 13 times in March. But, before March, Musk had steadily held the first or second spots on the list: March 6 was the first time since Aug. 19, 2021 that he placed outside of the top two in Forbes’ real-time billionaire rankings. Bezos had a resurgence of wealth earlier this year and Musk’s wealth has fluctuated as Tesla—which just announced hundreds more cuts among its staff this week—has struggled, leading to the ongoing back-and-forth.

It’s been a tough week. So I hope to liven up your day with five technology products that Washington Post staffers are digging right now.

I’m not advocating for mindless retail therapy. But hey, you can head into the weekend checking out something fresh and fun from this list.

An actual camera

Why would anyone buy a digital camera when you can take photos with your phone?

Post gadget guy Chris Velazco said this roughly $1,050 Ricoh GR IIIx digital camera transformed photo-taking from forgettable to focused on the moment.

“If I’m walking around with my phone in hand, I’ll snap a couple photos in passing and never think about them,” Chris said. “When I walk around holding a camera, it only makes me think about taking photos.”

Chris warns that his camera “absolutely stinks in low light.”

There was recently a revival in digital cameras after The Youths fell in love with them. Popular models are often sold out.

The camera Chris owns was out of stock on Ricoh’s website when I looked. You might need to hunt online or try reliable secondhand sites like VIP Outlet , Back Market or others from this PIRG list .

A white-noise machine and light-blocking stickers

Is hell a hotel room full of light leakage and loud footsteps? It is for Amanda Finnegan , who runs By The Way, The Post’s Travel section. She writes:

I travel frequently between my home in Chicago and our office in D.C., which means a lot of hotel stays. I’m a super-light sleeper, so I need all the help I can get (also, fun fact: I’ve been told my eyes don’t fully shut when I sleep).

There are two things that are always in my bag: a portable white-noise machine and light-blocking stickers.

A phone stand with octopus-like suction cups

Emma Grazado , The Post’s social media coach, is an Official Cool Person with a cool product suggestion. She writes:

I’m a big fan of the OctoBuddy , a suction cup sticker that lets you adhere your phone to some surfaces like mirrors or your laptop screen.

Watch enough TikToks and you’ll see lots of video creators with these silicone grippers.

I ordered a few to try for video shoots, but after traveling with it, I realized it’s great for much more.

I stick my phone to the airplane seat TV for easier scrolling, and the OctoBuddy keeps my phone from sliding off tabletops. I stick my phone to hotel mirrors to check out my outfit. And I stick my AirPods case to my phone so I don’t lose my headphones while I’m commuting.

It’s a weird sensation to feel the grippers on the back of your phone. Maybe people think I have a fidget toy . Fine by me.

When Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos step on to the red carpet at the Met Gala next month, it will mark their coronation as America’s new royalty.

Page Six has learned that the couple have been wooed by Anna Wintour and will attend the night.

It puts the Amazon king and his bride-to-be at the apex of celebrity and power, from Hollywood to Washington, DC, to Miami — and now to New York’s most glittering social event.

Their court is stuffed with power players including Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Barry Diller — who threw the couple an engagement party — and David Geffen, and aides from stylists to schedulers.

They dispense largesse in the form of a “courage and civility award,” and mingle with other royalty, including not just King Charles , but Prince William and his exiled brother Prince Harry .

They even have a $500 million royal yacht, Koru , the largest sailing yacht in the world.

And this month their vast political power was recognized when they were invited to the White House by President Joe Biden for a state dinner for the prime minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, where they joined guests including JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon and Apple’s Tim Cook.

Bezos, 60, declined to answer whether he will be donating to Biden’s campaign.

But his net worth of $197 billion means that he is now the Democrats’ target number one for cash.

A Washington, DC, source who has worked closely on fundraising with the White House said that when organizing state dinners, some spots are discreetly offered to people “supportive” of the president’s “fundraising endeavors.”

The source told Page Six of the invite, “If Bezos is not already supporting one of the super PACS it’s a strong indication that he’s being courted to support one of the super PACS.

“The question is whether he’ll become the Dems equivalent to the Koch brothers’ relationship with the Republicans.”

Billionaire Charles Koch and his late brother David were for years seen as the Republicans’ most important donors.

They founded Americans for Prosperity Action, have pumped their own cash into a host of conservative groups and have galvanized others to follow their lead.

Now Democrats sense they could hit a similar cash gusher.

Bezos — who stepped down as Amazon CEO in July 2021 — and presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump have a feud that dates back to 2015, which resulted in Bezos joking that Trump should be sent to space.

Since then, Trump has called Bezos “Jeff Bozo” and said it would be a “great idea” if employees at the Bezos-owned Washington Post went on a “really long strike.”

Intriguingly, Sanchez is now one of the highest-profile Latinas in the country, a demographic that Democrats are concerned has been drifting towards the Republicans .

The couple recently moved to Florida — home to a large Latino community and historically a swing state, although recently firmly Republican.

Earlier this month, Bezos purchased a home for approximately $90 million in Indian Creek Village, Miami— colloquially known as Billionaire Bunker.

It’s the third property he owns in the exclusive neighborhood, where Tom Brady lives, alongside Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.

The couple will live in the home while the other two homes are torn down, according to Bloomberg .

Last month, Sanchez and Bezos honored Eva Longoria — a prominent Latina Democratic supporter who stumped for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton — with the Bezos Courage and Civility Award and gave the actress a $50 million grant for her charitable endeavors.

“She once said superheroes and even everyday heroes don’t often look like her father, or sound like her Tio – her uncle. But they can and they should,” Sanchez wrote on Instagram .

If Bezos brought the scent of almost unlimited money to the White House, Sanchez, 54, added the glamor, clad in a $2,200 red lace and satin corset dress by Rasario which raised eyebrows for its generous display of cleavage .

ALICE + Olivia designer Stacey Bendet told Page Six, “Lauren has what I call BGE, best girl energy, these are the girls you want in your life.

“She’s truly the sexiest woman in the world – she owns it, why can’t she look sexy at the White House? I doubt anyone at the White House complained!”

The former TV reporter now has her own stylist, Kelly Johnson, who counts Catherine Zeta Jones, “Abbot Elementary” star Lisa Ann Walter, and actress Tamera Mowry among her clients.

Johnson also dressed Sanchez in a revealing red Lever Couture gown for the Vanity Fair Oscars party last month.

Sanchez’s glam squad frequently includes hair stylist Olivia Halpin and make-up artist Laura Ann who wrote online, “It’s an honor watching you and @jeffbezoschange the world!” She also turns to Jamie Sherrill — known as Nurse Jamie — for tweaks and treatments.

She also counts Hollywood power women Lydia Kives — married to Hollywood super-connector Michael Kives — and entrepreneur Veronica Smiley Grazer, married to producer Brian Grazer, as her best friends.

Sanchez has helped make-over Bezos into a character seemingly based on Tony Stark from Iron Man, while Bezos has introduced his fiancée to a string of significant power brokers.

He has a longtime friendship with Wintour, which dates back to 2012 when Amazon first sponsored the Met Gala, and Bezos, then honorary chairman, was joined by his then-wife Mackenzie Scott.

Back then, he took styling advice from Wintour, who advised him to team a pocket square with his Tom Ford tux.

Bezos then attended the gala solo in 2019 — weeks after it was revealed that he had been having an affair with Sanchez — and was divorcing Scott , the mother of his three sons and one daughter.

Sanchez soon also divorced her husband, Hollywood agent Patrick Whitesell, with whom she has two children, Evan, 17, and Ella, 16. She also has a son, Nikko, 23, with former NFL player Tony Gonzalez.

In January 2020,  the couple joined Wintour for a lengthy lunch at St Ambroeus in the West Village, and in September 2022, they attended a star-studded party at Wintour’s Manhattan townhouse alongside a slew of other A-listers like Hugh Jackman, Leonardo DiCaprio, and singer Florence Welch.

Now Sanchez has her own relationship with Wintour — who as well as running the Met Gala, is one of the Democratic party’s most prominent media cheerleaders.

In June 2022, Sanchez had a power girls night out with Wintour and Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abdein at Indochine in Noho, Manhattan, before they went to the Public Theater.

Then came a Vogue shoot with celeb snapper Annie Leibovitz in November.

She photographed Sanchez inside the 10,000 Year Clock, a subterranean project in West Texas — and posing with Bezos in a shoot that was dubbed “uncomfortable” and “cringe”.

In one photo, the lovebirds sat in the front seat of a retro van while Bezos wore a brown cowboy hat, black T-shirt and blue jeans while Sánchez flaunted her arm muscles in a tight white tank.

Unfortunately for the couple, several readers were not fans of their looks or the idea that “Vogue” was “glamorizing” the billionaire. Some even likened Sanchez to rocker Steven Tyler.

The slings and arrows, particularly online, have stepped up recently.

Last week, legendary New York restaurateur Keith McNally wrote online, “Does anybody else find Jeff Bezos’ New wife – Lauren Sanchez – ABSOLUTELY REVOLTING?’” 

‘What an ugly and F***ing SMUG – LOOKING couple they make. Is this what having 1000 Billion dollars does to people?”

The response from the Bezos-Sanchez orbit was rapid.

Sanchez’s younger sister Elena Sanchez Blair retorted, “This is my sister you are talking about. A human being. One of the kindest, most loving people in the world. This is cruel and hurtful.”

Sanchez herself shrugged off the lèse-majesté by posting an inspirational speaker’s quote, “People will love you. People will hate you. And none of it will have anything to do with you.”

The first Monday in May, fashion’s biggest night of the year, is almost here.

The Met Gala is the rare occasion that brings together the biggest names in film, television, music, fashion, sports, technology and business to rub elbows on the red carpet and at the ultra-exclusive party. Few other events can boast A-list guests as disparate as Jeff Bezos and Serena Williams or Pete Davidson and Glenn Close.

From the start time, to the theme, to the guest list, here is everything you need to know ahead of the annual fundraiser.

When is the Met Gala?

The 2024 Met Gala is on May 6 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The event famously takes place on the first Monday in May. The official start time is 3 p.m. PDT/6 p.m. EDT, but guests are expected to arrive as early as 2 p.m. PDT.

How can I watch?

Vogue will be livestreaming the Met Gala red carpet on Monday on its digital platforms, its YouTube channel and its TikTok account. The stream will be hosted by Gwendoline Christie, La La Anthony and Ashley Graham. YouTuber Emma Chamberlain will return as Vogue’s special correspondent on the red carpet, interviewing the celebrities in attendance.

For those who prefer to watch on television, E! will be hosting a live show from the red carpet starting at 3 p.m. PDT.

What is the theme?

The Met Gala supports and celebrates the opening of the museum’s spring show at the Costume Institute. The new exhibition , which will officially launch the Friday after the gala, is titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” The theme for the evening is always linked to the exhibition. This year’s theme is “The Garden of Time,” which will borrow from the show’s emphasis on nature and “cyclical themes of rebirth and renewal.”

The dress code is inspired by J.G. Ballard‘s 1962 short story “The Garden of Time,” about a man who turns back time by plucking each flower in his garden until he leaves it barren. Fashion enthusiasts can expect to see plenty of botanical prints and archival pieces on the red carpet. Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking. Who are the co-chairs?

Luckily for fashion enthusiasts everywhere, Zendaya is confirmed to attend because she is one of the evening’s five co-chairs. The group, which also includes Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth, helps Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour to craft the evening. Wintour has been integral to the event since 1995 and she alone is in charge of the guest list.

TikTok CEO Shou Chew and Jonathan Anderson, the creative director of Loewe, will serve as honorary chairs, as both TikTok and Loewe are sponsors of the exhibition.
