Blue Chip crew win Hillarys Yacht Club champion award for stellar season
Whilst “blue” may have been disappearing from tally boards on the night of the Federal election, it was certainly front and centre as a number of trophies were presented to Blue Chip together with the ultimate accolade of club champion for season 2021-22 at Hillarys Yacht Club.
A consistent performance in division 2 by Keith and Deborah Fisk and crew over the season resulting in trophies for the Ocean Series, Summer Series and Overall Consistency laid the foundation for the club champion award ahead of overall consistency winners John Bird’s Perle in division 1 and Peter Hibberd’s Hard Evidence in division 3.
Sophia skippered by Bruce Utting and Ian Holder’s Bad Habits (of winning) were also successful in division 1, collecting trophies for the Summer Series and Mini Series, respectively. Hugh Burton, Cass Castalanelli, John Gregory and David Boyd on Seachange won both the Marmion Reef and Mindarie ocean races however Perle won the Ocean Series. Whispering Jack (Bruce Bradford), Mulberry (Mark Pitt) and Adam’s Rib (Rob Giraudo and Bob Mason) each won a trophy.

In division 2, Farrouk, owned and raced by outgoing keel captain Des Riley and Gail Riley, won several trophies in their break-out season with the yacht including the Commodore’s Cup, Ladies Skippers’ Race, Man Overboard Race and Digger’s Cup. Others to do well in the division included Volant (Emille Janssen, John Ball and Kevin Meta) and Show Me sailed by newly elected keel captain Tim Tucker.
Resolute (Damian Martin), Intuition (Marc Carpenter), Tosca (Leigh Collins and Stuart Marks), Comfortably Numb (Stephen O’Keeffe), Catabatic (Rob Bills), La Premiere (Gary and Julie Beeck) and Oceans II (Jos Colvin) each won a trophy however Tony Brooke on Mimosa won both the Ocean Series and the Summer Series to finish second to Hard Evidence in the Overall Consistency for division 3.
The Most Improved Yacht Performance went to Tim Tucker’s Show Me whilst amongst several highly rated nominees Phil Grove from Sophia was awarded Crew Person of the Year. The contribution of skippers in providing opportunities for sailing on Thursday morning throughout the season was acknowledged and the trophy awarded to Volant.
One could say the “most expensive” trophy was also the most undesirable in that the Broken Mast trophy also incurred a costly replacement, this year two yachts suffered such a fate, Sheer Magic and Mulberry. One is already up and ready to sail and hopefully the other will be ready for the new season in October.
Highlighting the breadth of success in the club an account of Wayne Pitcher’s outstanding offshore campaign with J122 racer Lithium by participant Neil Harrison and the description of the recent highly successful She Sails event whetted the appetite of many to get out on the water.

Event Description:
The Pot of Gold Races to Hillarys commenced in 1994. It was created as an event by the Hillarys Yacht Club that would encourage sailors from throughout WA compete in a Regatta in Offshore, Inshore and Dinghies on the same day with a presentation and celebration in the Clubhouse. Prizes to be presented in Gold coins. This has continued for the past 21 years, with over $100,000 being distributed. We encourage all Offshore competitors to come and enjoy a terrific weekend. You will be welcomed with a cold beer.
Overnight accommodation will be provided for all visiting boats at HYC on Saturday the 1st of February.
The Pot of Gold Presentations will be held at 1730 on Saturday 1st February in the Marina Room at HYC. A lucky door prize will be awarded. Catering is available following the presentations.

Formed in 1986, Hillarys Yacht Club resides in the Hillarys Marina overlooking the pristine waters of the Indian Ocean.
The Club has come a long way since then and it is renowned for its range of social and competitive sailing activities as well as diving activities, angling, power boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, social events and on water training courses.
Hillarys Yacht Club is an active family recreational facility and a thriving enterprise. It boasts a large Clubhouse as well as 270 on the water pens, boat lifting and racking services and junior club house.
Hillarys Yacht Club’s second storey restaurant, function room and ocean view bar showcases some of the best views along the northern coastline and is the premier water sports Club of the Northern Suburbs.

Have been here a few times, most recently for a wedding. Beautiful views of the marina and great food. Perfect in summer.
We went as guests. WHAT A SUPER BUFET we thought this gave the best value for money we had experienced so far in our visit to Perth. A widow seat overlooking the Marina added to our pleasure. Fortunately we can go back again next Sunday.
