Im the second owner of this beautiful boat since 2011 and I have All documentation for entire history, maintaining etc... The Catalina 30 has proved to be one of the most popular sailing vessels afloat. This entry level boat is safe, and spacious. With the combination of self tailing winches, and furling Genoa make her a very simple single handed sailor. This is a fine example of the line, she shows well and will need minimal effort to get her out there. Why not? The foreclosed mortgage was $177,956.00. A search through Yachtworld’s database of active 387 Catalina listings plus ones that have sold in the U.S. in 2016 show the average listing price is $152,166 and the AVERAGE SALES PRICE is $147,785. SHANNON has the desirable shoal / wing keel, blue hullsides, traditional rigging, and has lower hours showing than any other that I could find on the market! I am told that the previous owner passed away last winter. The bank holding the mortgage subsequently foreclosed upon SHANNON and she is now available for an incredible buying opportunity! Please view the 200+ photos of this 387 Catalina to see just how much this one shines! SHANNON is powered by a 40hp Yanmar diesel engine. The hour meter on the tachometer reads just 334 hours on it. This Catalina has two staterooms, a fully enclosed head & shower, plus a large main salon. She is hull number 62 from the factory. Here are some of the other features that I am aware of: Ultraleather seating surfaces in salon Windlass Anchor System Teak and holly flooring in the salon and staterooms Electric head Princess gas stove and Oven Delonghi Convection Oven Propane solenoid valve Acu-Gage water level monitor Water heater Standard Horizon VHF (appears newer) In-counter drop-in refrigerator Xantrex Power Inverter Charles Battery Charger Bow dodger Color Raymarine chartplotter/ radar unit at the helm Raymarine radome on the mast Raymarine autopilot at the helm Sony XPLOD Stereo with CD Changer Based on my observations, this Catalina exhibits a number of features and benefits beyond what I would consider an average 387 Catalina of this year. My observations include: The flag blue paint exhibits tremendous shine The sails, covers, and rigging lines appear to be in good, if not excellent, condition The stainless rails all appear to be in good condition and exhibit great shine The cabin appears to have been lightly used She has the optional air conditioning for the master stateroom (see note below) Her bow dodger and associated canvas appear to be in serviceable (if not good) condition Her engine appears relatively clean in appearance She has a newer LCD television in the salon with DVD player Her manuals are present She has the desirable WING KEEL/ SHOAL DRAFT (4’10”) She has brand new 4D batteries that were installed in October (2016). Based on looking at SHANNON and moving her to her current slip, I noticed the following imperfections/ items that may need attention: The board on air conditioning unit appears to need replacement. The A/C initially powered up for me on October 21st and blew cold air, however, the breaker tripped about 10 minutes after running. Power was checked and is good going into the board; however, it appears that the board shorted. This is relatively common for A/C units as we had a board failure two weeks ago on one of our vessels in Florida. (We had a board replaced for $600 last month in Florida.) There is area of paint on the starboard side that shows imperfections if seen up close. Upon closer inspection from various angles, I could see that there was a prior repair in that area that goes above the waterline to the cap and runs forward from mid-ship to the bow area. I am guessing that the surface in that spot was not prepped well enough for the paint. See photo. There are some spots on the interior wood walls where the stain has lightened. (The most noticeable areas are directly behind the shelf adjacent to the sofas. If SHANNON were my personal vessel, I would let the areas be and not bother re-staining/ refinishing.) The map table has discoloration in the wood. (I would plan to refinish this, if SHANNON were my personal boat.) While I consider the interior and exterior to be relatively clean in appearance, the next owner may desire to spend some hours (or hiring a detailer) to go through each hatch / surface / cubby hole to greater clean the appearance to his or her liking. The macerator pump appears to need replacement as its breaker trips immediately. I moved this boat on October 21st on Back Creek in Annapolis, Maryland. She started right up and ran great while underway. There are sails in the AFT stateroom. Please see the photos. To me, each looks to be in good condition. Note that my observation is solely based on what I can visually see of them in the stateroom. The mast is currently in storage near SHANNON’s current slip. Port Annapolis Marina quoted 14-16 hours to rig + tune the mast. They charge $105 per hour for rigging. Other yards will charge less, but for the purposes here, I recommend budgeting $1800 to re-step the mast. For those that desire to transport this Catalina via truck, it is a benefit to keep the mast down until she reaches her new destination. The sails are currently in the aft stateroom. They look exceptionally clean to me. It is important to note that of those sold comps above; the vast majority had more hours. (Average hours are generally accepted at 100 hours per year. I will be happy to send out the comps to those that request via email.) Further note that those numbers reflect the average prices. In my experience, comps with high hours, significant flaws, and high wear and tear tend to sell below the average price. Those comps with low hours, few flaws, and low wear and tear tend to sell above the average price. WE ENCOURAGE ALL SERIOUS PARTIES TO INQUIRE AND LOOK AT SHANNON. You may contact me, Rob, directly at 561-676-7250. We are looking to get SHANNON sold in the next few weeks. Do keep in mind that once this Catalina is sold, the chances of being able to find another at this opportunity will be nearly impossible. Please note that I am in Florida. We do not have any sales representatives located in Annapolis, however, I do have a couple of friends in Annapolis that can assist. SHANNON is currently winterized and on land in Annapolis (off Back Creek). Please keep in mind that SHANNON is a bank foreclosure and it is not my personal boat nor did I know the prior owner. I am not able to speak to the ins / outs of this vessel nor am I able to speak about how she sails, etc. My comments above are solely based on my own observations. I am sure there are more flaws than what I observed as she is a 10 year old+ vessel. This is not a brand new or perfect vessel. SHANNON will be the 3rd Catalina that we have sold in past year. Given the circumstances, information available, time of year, etc, we have set her WAY below average prices. I believe this represents an opportunity for the winning bidder to purchase SHANNON well below what the other 387s have been selling for on the traditional retail/ brokerage market. Please understand that I have done my best to represent the vessel as I notice it to be. Neither I, Aqueous, the financial institution, nor any other agents express or imply any guarantees or warranties whatsoever about this vessel (or any vessel). The description and photos do not represent any guarantees about the condition of the vessel or accuracy of any information. WE ENCOURAGE ALL BUYERS TO DO THEIR OWN INSPECTIONS / OBSERVATIONS PRIOR TO PURCHASING. Please understand that this is not a brand new yacht. Accordingly, we do not expect it to sell for the same price as a brand new one. Buyers are welcome to have the vessel inspected and surveyed. Any survey will be for the buyer’s benefit and will not constitute a price reduction or negotiating tool. Florida residents or anyone wishing to bring this Catalina to the State of Florida will be required to pay the state sales tax of 6%. We have a clear and marketable title to this vessel. SHANNON was previously documented with the United States Coast Guard. Upon qualification and a $84 application fee (if no lien is recorded), the new owner can obtain a USCG Certification documentation certificate in his/ her own name. If the owner desires a state issued Certificate of Title, then Aqueous can obtain a Florida Certificate of Title for the next owner if applicable fees and taxes are remitted. (Certificates can take up to 60 days to obtain.) Personal and/or professional inspections are very welcome prior to purchasing. Please feel free to call Rob with Aqueous Yachts at 561-676-7250 to come look at this beauty. Common Issues With Catalina Yacht Sailboats

Common Issues With Catalina Yacht Sailboats | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

August 30, 2022

Catalina sailboats have always been known for durability and quality, but they have some common issues to look out for.

Catalina sailboats, especially older vessels, commonly suffer from deck core failure, mast boot compression fatigue, keel separation, chain plate attachment failure, and fiberglass delamination issues.

In this article, we'll cover six of the most common problems unique to Catalina sailboats. Additionally, we'll show you how to spot these issues, along with a general idea of the time and effort required to repair them.

We sourced the information in this article from Catalina sailboat owners and sources familiar with repairing these vessels.

Table of contents

‍ Do Brand New Catalina Sailboats Have Any Problems?

Generally no, brand new Catalina Yachts are extremely high-quality and have virtually no common issues down the line. These sailboats are manufactured using the highest-quality materials that are economical.

And thanks to modern manufacturing techniques, even the best materials are now affordable for standard sailboats. Catalina yachts are high-end sailboats today and cost upwards of $200,000 in many cases. Thus, you can expect top-quality reliability and design.

Do Older Catalina Sailboats Have Any Problems?

Used Catalina sailboats are a different story. These boats were produced and sold at a much lower price point and with more 'standard' quality materials. For example, veneer was used instead of wood in some applications and whatnot.

However, they're still great boats—some of the best on the used market. Catalina yachts are affordable, especially the models built en masse in the 1970s and 1980s.

Most Common Problems with Catalina Sailboats

Catalina sailboats are some of the most numerous ever produced. These boats were built during a time when fiberglass boat building was fairly well established, but we didn't have as many quality materials to choose from.

It has been over 50 years since the first Catalina yachts rolled off the production line, and we've learned a lot since then. Additionally, despite their high quality, there are some common issues with these boats that warrant some inspection by owners and prospective buyers.

Here are some of the issues we look out for, along with how to spot them on used Catalina yachts.

1. Broken Mast Stays

Standing rigging is extremely important on Bermuda-rigged sloops, especially fiberglass vessels with aluminum masts. Unlike solid-masted vessels, like gaff-rigged catboats, virtually all Catalina sailboats rely on stainless steel stay cables to keep their masts up.

It's common on older Catalina sailboats for stays to be corroded or improperly tightened. This is bad news, as it often leads to complete stay failure and subsequent mast collapse. You should always inspect your standing rigging on an old fiberglass sailboat and replace it promptly if it stretches or shows signs of corrosion.

2. Deck Failure from Water Ingress

Old Catalina sailboats are notorious for deck failures, and they're pretty easy to spot once the degradation becomes advanced. Deck failure on Catalina sailboats is usually caused when water or rot makes its way into the organic deck core material and rots it away.

Remember, the decks of fiberglass boats are usually made from a combination of wood, foam, particleboard, and fiberglass for strength and water tightness.

When the outer layer deteriorates or cracks, water can get inside and turn the structural support below into worthless goo. Then it's only a matter of time before someone's boot makes a hole in the deck, which was once safe to walk on.

Usually, small soft spots in the deck of a Catalina sailboat can be repaired with relative ease, though it will require you to cut out and remove the affected area. It becomes a bigger issue when the rot affects a more vital area of the boat, such as a structural support beam.

You can find weak spots in the deck by looking for play in the deck surface. Usually, a weak spot will feel spongy or buckle under your weight. If you're walking around on the deck (on a surface that's supposed to be stepped on) and the deck moves from your weight, it's a bad sign.

3. Mast Compression Fatigue

Catalina masts are usually fastened to a strengthened point on the deck. If you follow the mast below decks, you'll notice a wooden beam (usually part of the woodwork between compartments) which leads to a solid mast step below the deck.

Catalina masts are held down by the stays with tremendous pressure, as hollow aluminum masts can be pushed hard but not bent. This transfers a heavy load through the support beam in the cabin and into the block in the floor. Over time, this pressure can deform or crack the compression post block.

This phenomenon is called compression fatigue, and it's pretty easy to spot. You probably won't have any indication of compression fatigue from the above decks unless the deck below the mast begins to sag noticeably. By that point, you've got bigger problems to deal with, and the vessel will need extensive repairs.

You can spot compression fatigue in a few ways. First, severe fatigue will usually be visible from the deck itself in the form of a sunken mast mount or cracks around the surface. Inside, any deformation or cracking in the ceiling around the compression post is cause for concern.

Finally, you can look below the floor at the mast block and look for cracks or deformation. A healthy mast block will have nice, even lines and an asymmetrical appearance. Most importantly, the top will be flat, and the fiberglass around the top of the post will be straight and free of cracks.

4. Keel and Hull Separation—The "Catalina Smile"

One of the most notorious failures on older Catalina sailboats is the separation of the keel and hull. Catalina sailboats are designed with a joint that connects the hull and the keel section of the vessel, and this area is known to fail from running aground or just from aging.

In fact, this form of separation is so common that there's a name for it. Sailors call it "the Catalina Smile," and it refers to the smile-shaped separation that occurs on the leading edge of the keel. This is an issue that anyone buying a 30+-year-old Catalina should definitely look for.

So what happens? This is due to the way the keel mounts to the boat. Catalina sailboats usually use heavy lead keels that are bolted to the bottom of the hull. These keels separate due to stretched fiberglass, impact, and loosened bolts.

It also happens when, over time, the seal between the keel and the hull fails and water corrodes the bolts. This problem isn't unique to Catalina sailboats—it can happen on any fin keelboat. It's common because the company was an early and widespread adopter of the fin keel design.

So can it be fixed, and is the Catalina Smile a fatal flaw? It depends entirely on the extent of the damage and when it occurs. If corroded bolts cause the keel to loosen, it can swing from side to side and crack the hull. There are a few cases of boats sinking this way.

But if it's not too severe, then you can have a competent boatyard repair it for a reasonable price. Additionally, you don't have to repair all cases of the Catalina Smile immediately, as minor cases require attention but aren't an immediate threat to the boat.

5. Chain Plate and Chain Plate Attachment Failure

Chainplates and chain plate attachments occasionally fail on Catalina sailboats, especially if they've been allowed to corrode. Another common cause of chain plate failure is the use of dissimilar or weak metals for replacement parts.

Some of these sailboats are over 50 years old. There have likely been many owners, and some may have improperly replaced chain plate attachments over the years.

Some use hardware store parts to replace high-strength and corrosion-resistant rigging components, which can break under pressure or cause irreversible galvanic corrosion when exposed to saltwater.

Luckily, this isn't the end of the world on used Catalina sailboats. Assuming the chainplate hasn't deformed the hull or torn out, you can replace all the potentially dangerous parts and bolts for a reasonable cost.

Failure most often occurs around chainplates when sails are deployed or when rigging is tightened. Replace all corroded or questionable parts before tightening rigging, and especially after you upgrade your standing rigging.

6. Fiberglass Delamination

Fiberglass delamination is a common issue on earlier fiberglass boats, especially those produced by Catalina in the 1960s and 1970s. Fiberglass delamination happens due to exposure to sunlight, abrasion, and water ingress, and it can happen almost anywhere on the boat.

Delamination occurs when one (or several) layers of fiberglass cloth become unglued from the others. Since Catalina sailboats are built with several layers of cloth, the occasional delamination due to age or abuse isn't uncommon—and it usually isn't immediately catastrophic.

Delamination can become an issue if it runs deeper than the first layer. Additionally, de-lamination can allow water to seep into the core and rot out the deck from within—a process that is extraordinarily difficult to stop once it starts.

Luckily, most cases of fiberglass delamination can be repaired with relative ease. Small areas of delamination can be fixed with a simple fiberglass cloth and resin kit from West Marine or by an experienced boatyard for a reasonable cost.

Chris-Craft Catalina 29

  • By Lenny Rudow
  • Updated: August 16, 2007

There’s a perverse sort of pleasure in being the first person to get blood and guts all over a prototype boat. The more pristine and beautiful the boat, the greater the pleasure. And when the five-pound Spanish mackerel came in over the gunwale of Chris-Craft’s new Catalina 29 and began puking half-digested sardines and throwing blood across the deck with every shake of its head, pure ecstasy hung in the air. Then I slid it into one of the two 6′-long, integrated, insulated, macerated fishboxes, and the boat was virginal no more. Pristine and beautiful? When it comes to looks, the Catalina 29 scores an 11.

Pretty Tough

****We don’t need to waste more space yakking about how pretty this boat is. Unless you’re blind or dead, the pictures on these pages prove the point. What the pictures don’t show is that the construction of this boat is just as beautiful as its lines. The liner and stringers are a molded grid, affixed to the hull with Weld-On adhesive before being foamed in place. Hatches are all infused for a perfect finish inside and out and ideal resin-to-fiberglass ratios; upholstery features dual-density foam and super-thick 35-ounce vinyl; teak decking is solid wood epoxied in place; and the 22-mil gel coat is backed with a vinylester barrier coat. Did I mention that every screwhead on the boat lines up with the next one? That the T-top supports run down through the console instead of hitting the deck next to it, so you don’t ever stub a toe or have to (gasp!) look at the unsightly beasts? Of course the visible pipework is powder-coated, but so are the pipes that you can’t see. Want to get a glimpse? Pop up the forward section of the console to access the head, and you can see the bottoms of the supports. Yup, they’re powder-coated.

Now match up the cutting-edge construction techniques with the design: The bow has gobs of flare and the outer strakes are turned down at a 7-degree angle to redirect spray-only twice during our entire day of fishing and 20-plus miles of cruising did I feel salt spray. The inner strakes are turned down at a 5-degree angle to provide lift, and the 54-degree entry tapers back through the variable-degree deadrise to a 21-degree transom deadrise. Taken as a whole, the boat runs every bit as good as it looks. And the ride was rattle- and vibration-free through a 2′ chop, no matter which angle we attacked the seas from. In fact, the only thing I heard other than water and engine noise was the sound of the rigs smacking against our fishing rods as we charged through the waves.

****As fun as it was to catch that first fish, the next was no less a thrill. And the next, and the next. In all we bagged about a dozen Spanish mackerel and four or five kingfish, thanks in no small part to Chris-Craft paying as much attention to designing a fishable boat as it did to making it look good and run well. This is where we find a real departure from the norm-most of the time boats that focus on good looks or high performance fall flat in the fishing department. Naturally, you’ll find the standard stuff: four gunwale holders, under-gunwale rodracks, coaming bolsters, five rocket launchers across the hard top-a standard feature that many builders charge thousands for, incidentally-and a foldaway aft bench seat. But Chris-Craft went above and beyond: Baits stay lively and kicking in a 28-gallon lighted, round, baby blue livewell, which doesn’t splash out or overflow when you’re underway and it’s full. Unfortunately, it shares a pump with the raw-water washdown, which downgrades the effectiveness of both units; give us a second pump, please. In addition to the two long aft fishboxes, there are four smaller ones in the forward deck.

Take a deep breath now-I don’t want to shock you-but this boat is even prewired for electric reels or downriggers. That’s an extremely rare feature, one usually reserved for raw fish-killing machines. Plus, the relatively svelte transom allows you to get closer to the outboards than the vast majority of modern boats. There’s still a 4′ reach so it’ll be challenging to work fish around the props from the cockpit, but it will at least be possible. The transom also holds an unexpected rodholder, and when you flip down that bench seat, note that it’s supported by stainless-steel brackets instead of folding legs. That means less stuff to fold every time you deploy the seat and less stuff to trip over once it’s in place.

Chris-Craft scores bonus points in the nifty category for the drinkbox. Grab the passenger seat and tilt it forward to open up a refrigerator/freezer. Dial it in however you like, to keep your drinks frosty or frozen solid. Unfortunately, the Catalina 29 rates a deduction for the anchor locker. Yes, it looks great with the through-the-hull strike plate and anchor roller. Sure, hiding the windlass under a hatch is also a smart touch. But rope locker access is through a small pie plate that was barely large enough to get my elbow through. Sooner or later there will be a tangle or a knot in the rode and straightening it out will be hell.

Second Wind

****Have you taken your blood pressure medicine today? If not, stop reading right now, because you’re about to get hit with another Catalina bombshell: Its speed and efficiency beat the competition, be they die-hard fishers or eye-pleasing showboats. A glance at the performance chart shows that this boat tops out at 54.8 mph and cruises at a zippy 43.2 mph. Great numbers, but not astronomical by today’s standards, right? Okay, let your eyes wander along until they hit the “stat. mpg” column. This is the row that tells you how efficiently the boat runs. At a 4500-rpm cruise, the Catalina 29 gets 1.7 miles to the gallon. Now compare that to some other twin four-stroke outboard boats of similar size. Regulator’s 29, for example ($137,000 with the twin F250s), gets 1.5 mpg at the same rpm while going about 3 mph slower. Southport’s 28 (closer to $150,000 with twin Honda 225s) gets 1.4 mpg at 4500 rpm while cruising at 36.5 mph. Both these boats have top-notch fit and finish and excellent fishing designs, and their performance numbers are more than respectable. Yet the Catalina 29 surpasses them.

Pristine? Beautiful? Damn straight. Efficient? A top performer? Yup. And a good fishboat, as well? You bet. It’s all of these things, and even more-especially when a fish is thrashing around on the deck throwing blood all over the place.

Catalina 28 MKII

Catalina 28 MKII is a 29 ′ 5 ″ / 9 m monohull sailboat designed by Gerry Douglas and built by Catalina Yachts between 1995 and 2010.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
