Boat of The Week: This 147-Foot Expedition Yacht and Her Sportfishing Little Sister Go Everywhere Together

The 147-footer's tender lets the owners fish the world's most remote waters, but is unique because it crosses oceans on its own power., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

New Lead

The Dynamic Duo has nothing on  Dorothea III , the 147-foot expedition yacht that has taken mothershipping to a new level, and her 63-foot sportfishing sidekick, Post One . Since Dorothea III ‘s 2007 build at Cheoy Lee shipyard, the Ron Holland-designed yacht has traveled to more than 75 countries, logging over 140,000 nautical miles. But it’s her two-year, long-distance cruising relationship with Post One that has stretched the realm of possibilities in the superyacht world.

“We’ve always had an aggressive cruising program, but over the years it ratcheted up from remote cruising to towing tenders for sportfishing excursions,” Capt. John Crupi told Robb Report . “Then the tenders got bigger, the cruising areas got wider, and over the last two years, we’ve traveled in tandem with our big sportfishing tender, Post One , covering more than 40,000 miles across three separate oceans.”

That kind of tandem travel is unheard of in the superyacht world. On most superyachts, tenders are typically 18- to 32-ft. motorboats stored inside the hull. Dorothea III ’s owners, by contrast, are traveling with a 63-ft. sportfishing battlewagon, heading into the world’s most remote waters for fishing expeditions that other anglers can only dream about.

Mothership

Post One , a two-year-old, 63-foot Hatteras GT, is the owner’s fifth boat built by the North Carolina shipyard. “We had built one just prior to that, a 45 Hatteras Express,” says Crupi, who has been with the owners since late 2000. “We did some crazy stuff with that boat with the towing configuration by developing a remote-control program that allowed us to control the 45 Hatteras from Dorothea III .”

Crupi says pulling a full-sized sportfishing yacht behind a mothership posed challenges, but the benefits far outweighed the headaches. “When you get to where you’re going—some sportfishing mecca that is off the grid—you’ve got an awesome fishing boat,” says Crupi. “That’s something nobody else in the sportfishing world has ever done—just because they can’t get their boats there. But we could.”

While Brazil proved to have the best blue marlin, Crupi recalls many other fertile waters with unbelievable fishing.

After ten years of towing, Dorothea III ’s owners decided to build a tender that could cross oceans on its own engines. But pushing Post One for 4,000 miles of transatlantic cruising, when it’s designed to go 200 miles, was not an easy task. The Hatteras could run for just two days at 10 knots, before it needed to be refueled.

Crupi says the relatively short range, at least compared to the superyacht, were mitigated in part by “beefing up” Post One ’s systems, including its pumps, motors, fuel-transfer systems, fuel bladders and “over the top” electronics. Refueling Post One from the mothership while under way was also a risky unknown, adds the captain, but both crews have perfected it, even in mid-ocean.

Dorothea III was critical to the success of the cruising adventure. “She was designed with optimization in mind,” says Crupi. “The fact that she has a single-engine configuration, with controllable pitch on the propeller, let us go places that a typical twin-engine yacht couldn’t have accessed. A twin-engine superyacht certainly wouldn’t have the range or fuel capacity to run two boats simultaneously across oceans.”

Marquesas

The mothership and tender traveled thousands of miles to reach the Marquesas in French Polynesia.  Camper & Nicholsons

Built to Lloyd’s MCA 100, Dorothea III has undergone two $5-million refits at Derecktor Shipyards in Fort Lauderdale since the current owners acquired her in 2011. The refits included zero-speed stabilizers, a new paint job, new generators, hydraulic systems, teak decking and substantial AV/IT systems.

Dorothea III is listed for sale with Camper & Nicholsons for $11,990,000. Her cruising partner, Post One , is also available for sale as a package, or separately. Check out other images of Dorothea III below.

Logica 147 superyacht

The rule-breaking superyacht Logica 147

For a yacht whose start in life was anything but conventional, the razor-sharp Logica 147 has emerged not only great, but amazingly well adjusted.

The owner, a media and real estate tycoon based in Canada, had no intention of entering the superyacht business when he asked the Benetti Sail Division – a yard more known for its canoe-sterned motor yachts – to change tack by building the 44.8 metre superyacht in 2011.

Her deceptively simple profile comes from the drawing board of Luca Brenta Design, a studio best known for the 37 metre Vitters sloop  Ghost  and its influential styling work with Wally Yachts. This, though, was the design team’s first motor yacht project, and its sailing pedigree is clear in Logica 147’s lean, low-slung styling. The more generous spaces afforded by a motor yacht meant Lorenzo Argento of Luca Brenta Design could let his imagination run wild, and this is most evident in the spectacular 5.5 metre pool on the roomy foredeck and sun-worshipping platform atop the upper deck’s coachroof.

Photography courtesy Logica Yachts

But in the middle of the build he realised he wanted ownership of the entire project, so he bought the Logica brand from Benetti Sail Division and shifted his part-built yacht to a different yard in Viareggio for fitting-out. At a stroke he became a superyacht builder – and a very good one. The evidence was the talk of the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2014; all clean lines and smart, dark navy hull, Logica 147 gleamed beside the entrance of the Vieux Port as if standing guard.

Logica 147's sharp exterior styling flows seamlessly into the bright, contemporary interior from Martin Kemp Design, a London studio that has established a solid reputation for its work in yacht and jet design and also in high-end private properties. Logica’s owner particularly admired Kemp’s work on the yacht and residential projects of developer Candy & Candy, and you can see echoes of the luxurious minimalism of modern penthouse apartments in Logica’s straight edges and rectilinear layouts, highlighted by vast windows throughout.

Vertical and horizontal lines such as the stainless steel splines in the oak-floor planking in the saloon emphasise the interior spaces’ height and depth. Reflective surfaces – mirrors, glass, polished ebony, lacquer – lend a sense of opulence and substance, as does the use of leather and luxurious fabrics throughout. Alongside these design touches are unexpected twists: optical fibres woven into the rugs and there are unique lighting fixtures by Kemp, the show-stopper amongst which is an incredible chandelier above the dining table that wouldn’t look out of place in the Tate Modern. Painted wooden panels, meanwhile, screen the sturdy mechanics of the side doors onto the main deck.

“Lots of the detail – things such as the stainless steel, the leather and the marble – is there to show what we are able to do as a boutique shipyard,” says Logica 147’s captain Thomas Donati, who came from the owner’s prevous boat and worked on the project throughout the build.

Nothing illustrates this boutique approach as well as the resin-encapsulated, turquoise, “liquid metal” bulkhead panelling, which is the first thing you encounter on entering the saloon through the cockpit doors. The panelling was custom made by Ian Abell at the Based Upon studio in London, and is best used as a stunning backdrop to the dining table.

The main deck master cabin wins all the prizes for accommodation. Those big windows are used to maximum effect, creating a bright, appealing space that overlooks the long foredeck and pool. Down a few steps behind the sleeping area are a small lobby office and a marble bathroom along the centreline, with a bath that sits underneath a skylight and large, walk-in shower. Down below are four comfortable guest suites, and, unusually, a VIP cabin tucked in the stern, behind the engine room and handy for the beach club and fitness equipment.

All this style is more than backed up by Logica 147’s performance, with that straight stem and attractive retro flare adding more than just a sense of purpose to the yacht’s exterior.

“She is full displacement, with a long waterline,” naval architect Pierluigi Ausonio, from PLANA Design, explains. “The hull is particularly efficient.” Lorenzo Argento from Luca Brenta Design adds: “Working with Ausonio, we tried to optimise the transom exit and bow entry because that’s where noise and vibration are generated and what we achieved with a small team in terms of noise and efficiency was above expectations.”

Proof of the pudding is in the Logica 147’s performance. “She does 17 knots at full load – actually, 16.9 knots to be strictly accurate,” her owner says. Easing back to 15 knots gives the yacht a 3,200-mile range and reducing speed still further to 10 knots increases range to 6,500 miles. “She is fantastically economical and very stable – on sea trials with RINA we did a full-speed 360 and only heeled by seven degrees,” adds Captain Thomas Donati. “With the stabilisers on it was only two degrees. They (RINA) were very surprised.”

Great pains were also taken to keep noise and vibration to an absolute minimum. Captain Thomas Donati says that regardless of the boat-speed you simply cannot tell from the wheelhouse whether the engines are running. Her owner adds: “At full speed there is silence in the saloon – you can hold a conversation. At 10 knots we cannot hear the engines in the cabins.” He admits to some noise in the sixth cabin in the stern, caused by the auxiliary generator mounted on the other side of the bulkhead; a shame since in other respects the roomy VIP suite is the best guest cabin. “We learn from these things,” he says. “My previous boat was a 30 metre made in Italy – it was supposed to be a speedboat, but it was too heavy. We learned from that too. With this yacht we didn’t want to make the same mistakes. We have been very careful with the quality.”

Logica 147 was launched in the summer and according to Captain Thomas Donati completed a three-week, 1,700-mile shakedown cruise around the western Med – Corsica, Sardinia, Tunisia and the South of France – without a hitch, including one non-stop, 23-hour passage without a single buzz or bleep from an alarm. That must be virtually unique for a new yacht. As a customer, owner and now boatbuilder, Logica’s owner has a unique perspective on the superyachting business: “Buyers in this market can be difficult people,” he says. “Perfection is expected – it’s normal. You have to always balance costs with expectations.”

Given all the things that could have gone wrong – from using a designer unused to motor yachts to taking on a superyacht halfway through its build – the owner claims not to have found the construction stressful, and actually found it acted as a kind of therapy. “The build was very enjoyable – it had a calming effect,” he says. “It takes time and patience to achieve perfection. All the details have to come together: concept, décor, design. It is very interesting to work with engineers and naval architects.” There are plans afoot for an even bigger version of this first Logica, which will exhibit the same heady mix of form and function. More time and patience, then – and one of the calmest shipyards in town.

147' (44m) Superyacht BERZINC Now for Sale

Posted July 20, 2020 in Brokerage & New Build by Morgan Crowe

The 147-foot (44.6m) BERZINC is now for sale with Northrop & Johnson Yacht Broker Ed Dickinson, the yacht is asking €3,600,000

BERZINC is an extraordinary example of a classic yacht that has been fully rebuilt and transformed into a luxurious modern superyacht. Built by Astilleros de Mallorca in 1977, the yacht underwent a complete rebuild in 2012 at Balk Shipyard. Working in partnership with naval architect Navirex and exterior designer Felix Buitendjik the yacht was internally gutted down to her bare metal then comprehensively rebuilt from the hull up. During this time, BERZINC was also lengthened and fitted with a new keel. Furthermore, all the yacht’s decks were rebuilt, a new flybridge was constructed and an excellent crew area was added. Annually since her rebuild, the yacht has a yard period to ensure she stays in excellent condition.

The luxury motor yacht showcases impressive living areas both inside and out. BERZINC’s modern interior is adorned with white décor with pops of color and dark wooded floors to create a crisp, clean ambiance. Her interior features an abundance of seating and formal dining, making it perfect for hosting guests.

Feadship has launched it’s sixth 147′ F45 yacht

Cruising on a Feadship yacht is an experience to be enjoyed on every sensory level. 2012 has been another exciting year for the shipyard because they received several awards and launched some very exciting new yachts such as the “Venus” Project. The first journey is one of those never to be forgotten pleasures. After over two years of development, Feadship has begun a limited edition production of the spec-built Feadship Vantage F45. The design and technological concept have merged into a yacht that meets the highest standards of comfort and quality. Recently, Feadship has launched the sixth hull in the Vantage F45 line which is being sold to a Chinese customer. Christened “Blue Sky,” this yacht differs from her sisters because she has been slightly reconfigured to include a helipad at the client’s request.

In June of 2012, Feadship announced the order of their first superyacht to an owner from the People’s Republic of China. Following a 2012 tour of the Far East by the award-winning Feadship  Helix , a Chinese client requested a similar-sized vessel that would also include a helicopter deck. Feadship immediately designed and engineered this option and presented it for approval in a timely manner. “Blue Sky” has naval architecture by De Voogt Naval Architects. An interior by Bannenberg & Rowell and Sinot Yacht Design will accommodate 10 guests in five staterooms and twin 1,055hp MTU engines will give her a cruising speed of 14.5 knots and a transatlantic range. Like most Feadship yachts, she has a sleek yet powerful profile which speaks to her trans-ocean cruising capabilities.

Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). The remainder of the APA is returned after charter.">Price Terms: Plus Expenses

  • Meet John Sobrato, Sobrato Organization

Read More Profiles

Chairman, sobrato development companies and joint venture board member.

By Duffy Jennings | Published: October 2009

On a polished credenza in John A. Sobrato’s corner office in Cupertino sits a scale model of his 147-foot yacht, the only item on the eight-foot-long sideboard. The modern white craft’s long sleek lines and pointed bow make it easy to imagine the boat cruising on the high seas, destined for exotic ports, Sobrato at the helm.

But that’s not much of a stretch. John Sobrato has been the captain of his own ship for more than fifty years, ever since he began selling homes while he was an underclassman at Santa Clara University. Today he pilots a family real estate development organization now known as much for its philanthropic work in Silicon Valley as for its vast property holdings.

A charter member of Joint Venture and a longtime board member, Sobrato feels strongly about the organization’s regional education programs, and has contributed both time and dollars to the Alliance for Teaching initiative that works to develop, recognize and reward teachers in Silicon Valley.

“That’s what we really need in this valley,” he says. “Teachers are the most important asset we have, and our education system in this state is failing them and our students. Colleen Wilcox is doing a great job with that program.”

Joe Parisi, CEO of Therma and a fellow Joint Venture board member who has been Sobrato’s friend for some forty years, says Sobrato is “always fair-minded, very generous, easy to get along with and very community-oriented.”

“John is probably the most organized person I know,” Parisi says. “He is so focused on whatever he is doing. He can get more done is less time than anybody.”

Sobrato, now 70, was born in San Francisco, the only child of Ann and John M. Sobrato. His father had emigrated from Italy after working as a chef for the American army during World War II. Starting as a dishwasher, the elder Sobrato eventually saved enough to open his own place, which became renowned as John’s Rendezvous in North Beach.

“John’s Rendezvous and Bimbo’s were the two most popular places in town,” Sobrato said. “My father’s restaurant was Herb Caen’s favorite place to go. I worked there sometimes, but my father told me not to go into the restaurant business. It was so hard.”

The family moved to Atherton when John was two, but he was only twelve when his father died of cancer in 1952. With a young son to support, Ann Sobrato took English classes, sold the restaurant and went into real estate on the Peninsula.

Young John went to Bellarmine Prep then enrolled at Santa Clara as an engineering major. “But I quickly found out I wasn’t cut out for it,” he says, “and I switched to business.” That turned out to be an understatement. By his junior year, he was working three days a week selling modest homes in Palo Alto.

“I thought real estate would be interesting,” he says. “Back then, three-bedroom, one-bath homes cost around $20,000. With ten percent down, almost anyone could afford to buy a house.”

John graduated from Santa Clara in 1960, the same year he married his wife, Sue, whom he met at a wedding at the Palo Alto Elks Club. They will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary next year.

After graduating from Santa Clara, Sobrato founded Midtown Realty, specializing in the resale of popular Eichler homes, and then expanded into commercial real estate, working with his mother and partner Carl Berg. In 1974, he sold Midtown Realty to concentrate on the commercial development of properties in the rapidly emerging high technology industry.

Sobrato has been responsible for the development and construction of more than 250 office and R&D facilities totaling in excess of 15 million square feet. Today the Sobrato Development Companies owns a portfolio of properties encompassing eight million square feet and 7500 apartments in California, Oregon and Washington without institutional partners.

The portfolio includes the corporate headquarters of Apple Computer, Netflix, BEA, Siebel Systems, EMC, NVIDIA and Verisign as well as buildings housing offices for Yahoo!, the County of Santa Clara and the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.

In 1998, Sobrato created the Sobrato Family Foundation to provide philanthropic support to non-profit organizations and projects. Nearly forty-five non-profit service providers receive rent-free office space in two of Sobrato’s office parks in Milpitas and San Jose. Since 2000, the year Ann Sobrato died, the family has donated nine buildings and 124 acres of land valued at $312 million to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

“My mother was the one who started the family on the concept of giving back to the community,” says Sobrato. “She was a pink lady at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Menlo Park and volunteered in many other community activities.”

In 2007 the Society of Fundraising Professionals recognized the Sobrato Foundation as the Foundation of the Year from a field of 175 international foundations..

John and Sue Sobrato have three children, John Michael, Sheri and Lisa, and seven grandchildren. John Michael, a 1983 graduate of Santa Clara University, is now the CEO of the family business.

John A. Sobrato is a member of many business, education, civic and community boards and foundations, and has received numerous honors and awards for his contributions to Silicon Valley’s business and non-profit communities.

John comes to the office weekly and travels frequently up and down the Pacific Coast for business, but in spite of his busy schedule, he plays tennis three or four days a week and finds time to ski – on both water and snow.

“I love to be active,” he says, looking fit and tanned. “I had a heart attack when I was 37 and it changed my life. I lost 50 pounds, quit smoking and got in shape.”

When he’s not working, you can find him and Sue spending time with family and traveling.

“We take the boat all over the world,” he says, nodding towards the model. “I love that boat. We spend a lot of time on it, sailing everywhere.”
