Rolex Yacht-Master II Rolesor Everose Gold Steel 116681

About the Rolex Yacht-Master Collection

The Rolex Yacht-Master is one of the brand’s youngest collections, having been introduced only 1992. And yet, it’s already one of their most diverse, with two distinct models under the family of watches, and dozens of permutations when it comes to dial designs, bezel styles, and bracelet options.

A look into its history shows that Rolex had plans for a yacht-themed watch decades before the Yacht-Master line was launched. Today, it’s a mainstay in the Rolex catalog.

Here are important milestones in the Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II history.

1958: Rolex entered a partnership with the prestigious New York Yacht Club, a social and boating club which sponsors an annual regatta.

1966: Rolex solidified its ties to the world of sailing when Francis Chichester – one of the world’s pioneering aviators and solo sailors – became the first person to sail around the globe while wearing a Rolex on his wrist. He sailed on his yacht, the Gipsy Moth IV, from August 1966 to May 1967, taking him 29,600 miles around the world.

1970s: Rolex never got around to creating a watch specifically for this category. The brand did make a prototype of the Cosmograph chronograph with the name “Yacht Master” on its dial, but they ultimately decided not to bring it to market.

1992: Rolex finally introduced the modern Yacht-Master – the brand’s first luxury sports watch built for the open seas. Whereas Rolex’s previous sports watches had utilitarian themes – the Submariner for diving, the Daytona for racing, and so on – the Yacht-Master was focused on aesthetics and luxury.

1994:  Rolex introduces midsize and ladies’ models of the Yacht-Master

1996: Rolex introduces two-tone (steel and gold) midsize and ladies’ models of the Yacht-Master

1997:  Rolex introduces the Rolesium version, which combines a steel body with a platinum bezel and dial. Until today the Rolesium is found exclusively in the Rolex Yacht-Master collection.

2007:  Rolex releases the Yacht-Master II, which is the world’s first watch equipped with a programmable countdown timer and a mechanical memory. The Yacht-Master II was unlike anything Rolex had launched before. Not only was it massive with its 44mm case, but it also had a bold, visually striking design that stood out among Rolex’s catalog of versatile timepieces.

2019:  Rolex introduces the Yacht-Master 42 to the collection. This is the first 42mm Yacht-Master model, offering a larger option for those who find 40mm too small. The first model came in 18k white gold, also a first for the collection, followed by an 18k gold version in 2022.

Key Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master

The Rolex Yacht-Master collection is composed of two families of watches: the original Yacht-Master, and the Yacht-Master II. While these two models have the same name, they are quite different from each other.

The Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992 as an ultra-luxurious sports watch for yachting and sailing enthusiasts. The nautical-inspired timepiece takes after the Rolex Submariner, but with greater emphasis on luxury materials and aesthetics.

The Yacht-Master II is a relatively new addition to the Rolex portfolio, introduced in 2007. Much larger that the Yacht-Master at 44mm, it is a purpose-built regatta watch equipped with a countdown timer for use in competitive sailing.

FEATURES OF THE ROLEX YACHTMASTER

Rolex yacht-master design.

Rolex Yacht-Master models come in an Oyster case with 100 meters of water resistance, a Triplock winding crown, and a bi-directional rotating bezel with raised 60-minute graduations and numerals. To make the watch easily readable, the dial features lume-filled round, baton, and triangular hour markers; luminous Mercedes-style hands, a date window at 3 o’clock, and a sapphire crystal with a Cyclops lens for easier reading of the date.

Since the introduction of the first all-gold Rolex Yacht-Master model in 1992, Rolex has expanded the line in terms of materials, aesthetic details, and mechanical upgrades. Here are the options available within the collection.

It is also one of Rolex’s most complicated watches, as it features a regatta chronograph with a countdown that can be programmed from 1 to 10 minutes, allowing yacht racers to accurately time the start of a race. Furthermore, its Ring Command Bezel is more than just a decorative element – it operates in conjunction with the movement and is actually how the user can set the programmable countdown.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II DIALS

The Yacht-Master II dial is unlike anything seen on other Rolex models because of its niche complication. It features a countdown display which can be programmed from 1 to 10 minutes, and read using the red-tipped arrow hand. Below the hour and minute hands at the center is a running seconds sub-dial. There’s also a red central chronograph hand, which can fly back or fly-forward to its starting position while in motion. It also features 12 square lume-filled hour markers.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II MOVEMENTS

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with two of Rolex’s most advanced movements to date, which feature a programmable countdown timer with mechanical memory, and chronograph synchronization.

Earlier models were powered by the 4160, and later models were upgraded to the 4161. The latter is based on the Daytona’s Caliber 4130, which features the same blue Parachrom hairspring for better switch resistance, and offer a 72-hour power reserve.

Popular Rolex Yacht-Master Models

The Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II are both excellent luxury watches that can suit any lifestyle. The Yacht-Master fits the mold of classic Rolex sports watches; while the Yacht-Master II has pushed the boundaries of what regatta watches can do. You can’t go wrong with the Rolex Yacht-Master, but here are some collector’s favorites:

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER with OYSTERFLEX BRACELET

In 2015, the Oysterflex, Rolex’s patented rubber bracelet, made its debut in the Yacht-Master collection. It’s appearance was also marked by several firsts: the first solid Everose gold Yacht-Master, paired with a matte dial and matte Cerachrom bezel.

The practical and edgy combination of solid gold and rubber continued with the release of the 18k white gold Yacht-Master 42 in 2019, and the 18k yellow gold version in 2022. This is a watch for someone who wants a luxurious watch that’s also ready for any adventure.

These models have the Calibre 3235 in place, which offers a 70-hour power reserve, and an upgraded Parachrom hairspring that has 10 times more precision than the traditional hairspring. The Calibre 3235 was also the first movement to receive Rolex’s certification as a Superlative Chronometer, and is regulated to a precision of an impressive -2/+2 seconds a day.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER RHODIUM DIAL

The stunning combination of Oystersteel and 950 platinum was made even more beautiful with the addition of a sunburst rhodium dial. This luxurious watch is part of the series of Yachtmasters introduced in 2016, which were upgraded with the Caliber 3235 movement mentioned previously. The slate dial is paired with turquoise details on the model signature and seconds hand, which gives just the right amount of color on the sleek monochromatic design.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II STEEL EVEROSE GOLD

The highly specialized Yacht-Master II was created as a professional regatta watch which can also be used as a chronograph. On the bezel, it has large 0-10 scale numbers and the Yacht-Master II name. On the dial is a smaller version of this countdown. Together, these allow the wearer to select a countdown interval of anywhere from one to ten minutes.

Aside from being one of the most complicated watches in the Rolex portfolio, the Yacht-Master II also stood out because of its unique look, owing to its 44mm case and bold colors. The steel and 18k Everose gold version is a crowd favorite due to its eye-catching combination of rose gold, blue, and red hues.

In fact, after the launch of the Daytona in 1963, it would be nearly another 30 years before they’d debut an entirely new model. That model was the Rolex Yacht-Master. Here, we’ll provide a Rolex Yacht-Master review, including key features of the Rolex Yacht-Master, the history of the Rolex Yacht-Master through the years, and notable wearers.

History of the Rolex Yacht-Master through the Years

The very first  Rolex Yacht-Master  was the Reference 16628. The brand only offered the model in a 40mm, 18-karat yellow gold case with a white dial. The Ref. 16628 also came equipped with a screw-down, Triplock crown and boasted 100 meters of water resistance. Inside, it housed the Caliber 3135 movement.

For the first several years, Rolex only made minor changes to the Yacht-Master line. In 1994, they released a slightly different iteration of the Yacht-Master: the Reference 68628. This variation was smaller, with a 35mm case. That same year, they also added a women’s version of the Yacht-Master: the Reference 69628. It showcased an even more modest case size, measuring just 29mm.

In 1999, Rolex introduced the first major update to the Yacht-Master collection. That year, they debuted an all-new, patented combination of metals created specifically for the Yacht-Master. They called this two-tone combination of stainless steel and platinum, Rolesium . At the annual Basel World Fair, Rolex launched the material in three different sizes. These included the 40mm Reference 16622, 35mm Reference 168622, and the 29mm Reference 169622.

The next update to the Yacht-Master collection came in 2005. That year, Rolex added another two-tone variation to the line, this time in stainless steel and 18-karat yellow gold. They offered the new colorway in the 40mm Reference 16623. Two years later, Rolex made the most significant change to the Yacht-Master line with the addition of the Yacht-Master II . However, the lineage of the original Yacht-Master has continued.

Rolex Yachmaster Crown view

In 2012, Rolex released the next notable upgrade for the Yacht-Master with the Reference 116622. While the model retained its 40mm sizing, it featured an all-new “super case” with different styling. In addition, it boasted an all-platinum bezel as opposed to a combination of platinum and stainless steel. Last but not least, it came equipped with a refined version of the Oyster bracelet featuring an upgraded clasp.

Three years later, Rolex debuted another first for the brand in the Yacht-Master collection’s Reference 116655. This time, instead of a new metal, they introduced their own rigorously designed and tested variation of the rubber strap. The Oysterflex bracele t marked the first-ever rubber strap for the brand. Ever since, it’s become a staple of the Yacht-Master collection.

In the past several years, Rolex has continued to make subtle updated and additions to the Yacht-Master line. One of the latest releases is the Yacht-Master 40 with a multi-color, gem-set bezel. More recently in 2019, Rolex introduced the first 42mm time-and-date Yacht Master Reference 226659.

Deep Dive on Key Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master

For years, 40mm was the standard sizing for the Yacht-Master. The smaller, 35mm variation was the only alternative up until around 2016. Rolex has since replaced it with the 37mm iteration for a smaller option. In addition, it’s only been since 2019 that Rolex has made a larger, 42mm option available.

Rolex Yachtmaster Blue Dial

One of the most notable key features of the Rolex Yacht-Master is the bidirectional, rotatable, 60-minute graduated bezel. Its design helps skippers measure and anticipate the crucial countdown interval leading up to the start of a regatta or sailing race. The screw-down, Triplock crown is another key feature of the Rolex Yacht-Master. This water-resistant system has been a staple of the model since its inception.

With only 100 meters of water resistance, the Yacht-Master is perfect for enjoying a day on the water as opposed to scuba diving. Yet, its in-house, perpetual, mechanical, self-winding movement makes it a robust watch for any occasion. In addition, the option of Oyster bracelet or Oysterflex strap made it versatile enough to take from land to sea.

Who Wears the Rolex Yacht-Master?

The Yacht-Master is a popular choice among many of today’s top entertainers, athletes, and chefs. Some of the Yacht-Master’s famous wearers include TV personality Ellen DeGeneres and film icons like Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis . Athletes across an array of modalities also appreciate the Yacht-Master. You can find it on the wrist of star players like former pro-footballer David Beckham, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan , and former World Number One golfer Justin Thomas. Last but certainly not least, the legendary chef Emeril Lagasse is among the Yacht-Master’s celebrity fans.

Rolex Yacht-Master Ultimate Buying Guide

rolex yachtmaster buying guide

As Rolex’s most diverse sports watch collection, the Yacht-Master is not only available in a wide assortment of case metals and sizes but it has also been paired with various bracelet styles and bezel materials. In less than three decades, the Rolex Yacht-Master collection has been home to dozens of references – some of which have been discontinued – and the nautical-inspired sports watch continues to be a mainstay of the Rolex lineup. There are two distinct models that share almost identical names: the Yacht Master and the Yacht Master II.

While the original Rolex Yacht-Master is an ultra-luxurious take on Rolex’s already popular sports watches, the Rolex Yacht-Master II was purpose-built to time out regattas in competitive sailing. Essentially, the Yacht-Master is the kind of watch you wear while lounging on a boat and a Yacht Master II is what you wear if you’re racing one. Nonetheless, both Rolex watches are incredibly popular, sought-after for their sleek designs and impeccable quality.

With that in mind, if you’re in the market for a Rolex Yacht Master, there are some important things you should know about the model (such as its history, pricing, and features) before you make a decision. Here, we’ve compiled everything you need to know about buying Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II watches to make the most informed purchase possible. Ready to get started?

Even though the Yachtmaster collection is one of the newest additions to the Rolex lineup, there has been a great amount of innovation over the years. Rolex Yacht-Master Two-Tone Blue Dial

History of the Rolex Yacht-Master

While we wouldn’t be introduced to the very first Yacht-Master until 1992, Rolex’s history with sailing actually dates back to 1958, the year the Swiss watchmaker partnered with the prestigious New York Yacht Club. By then, Rolex had already garnered a reputation for making great waterproof watches with the invention of their Rolex Oyster case back in 1926. So, the partnership was actually quite a natural next step.

Rolex solidified its relationship with the world of sailing in 1966 when Francis Chichester — one of history’s most exceptional navigators — became the first person to sail around the globe on his yacht, the Gipsy Moth IV, with a Rolex on his wrist. His voyage, which spanned from August 1966 to May 1967, took him 29,600 miles around the world. however, the most impressive part is that he only had a few tools to help him navigate his way, including nautical charts, a sextant, and a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The Rolex wristwatch chronometer he used was a reliable and steady partner, helping him keep time amidst rough conditions for 226 days at sea.

Despite the brand’s massive success in creating watches that were great for sailing, Rolex continued to hold back its efforts to create a watch specifically for this category. The brand did briefly dabble with the idea in the 1960’s, releasing a prototype dial for the Cosmograph chronograph with the name “Yacht Master” on it, but the idea never took hold. Today, only two known examples of this prototype Daytona Yacht-Master are known to exist — one belonging to Eric Clapton (whose model sold for $125,100 at auction in 2003) and one owned by legendary Rolex collector John Goldberger.

In 1992, we were finally introduced to the modern Yacht Master we know and love today. Its official name, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master, was the brand’s first ultra-luxury sports watch built for the open seas. To make sure that collectors understood the luxury aspect of this new watch, the very first 40mm model was forged entirely out of solid 18k yellow gold and featured a matching gold bi-directional rotating bezel (marked to 60 minutes for timing) alongside a gold Oyster bracelet. Over the next few decades, Rolex has expanded the collection using a variety of materials as well as adding new sizes to the luxury nautical watch collection.

15 years after the first release of the Yachtmaster, Rolex introduced the regatta chronograph Yacht-Master II specifically made for sportsmen to use while regatta racing. To cater specifically to these athletes, Rolex outfitted the watch with important features like a programmable countdown timer (to measure with reliability how much time until the start of the race) and both flyback and fly-forward functionality (for easy synchronization should the race committee have to restart the race sequence). Another key difference is that the Rolex Yacht-Master II is only available in one size, 44mm with an Oyster case and bracelet. However, there are a variety of alloys available.

How Much is a Rolex Yacht-Master?

Because there is such a wide variety of sizes and materials used across the Rolex Yacht-Master collection, the prices tend to vary significantly. For example, you can pick up some of the older or smaller Rolex Yacht-Master models for around $5,000 on the second-hand market. However, newer, larger Yacht-Master models, especially those forged out of precious metals, can sell for well into five-figures.

How much is a Yacht Master II?

Due to its large size, complicated movement, and frequent use of precious metals, the Yacht-Master II is one of the higher-priced Rolex watches you can purchase. In terms of pre-owned prices, a stainless steel reference of the Yacht-Master II starts around $15,000. This may seem steep, considering that this Yacht-Master II is stainless steel and doesn’t feature any diamonds or gems. However, the complexity of the movement is what really makes this watch shine and it is the primary factor behind its high price tag. On the higher end, the yellow gold ref. 116688 costs $43,550 retail and can be bought for around $28,000 on the pre-owned market.

Buying Pre-Owned vs New Yacht-Master Watches

The key difference between buying a pre-owned Rolex Yacht-Master or Yacht-Master II versus a new one is the price. For a retail Rolex model , you will surely pay a premium – especially if you choose one of the precious metal models. On the secondary market, you can get a Yacht-Master for a much lower price, and many collectors find this option a better value for their investment. However, this is still totally dependent on the specifics about the watch which you can get an idea of in the chart above. The price of a pre-owned Yacht-Master will always vary depending on factors like its alloy, the year it was produced, condition, and whether it is a luxury-oriented Yacht-Master or a sporty and purpose-built Yacht-Master II.

Often, many collectors turn to the second-hand market to purchase a Rolex Yacht-Master. Of course, the price is a big factor, but due to the durability and overall build quality, a used Rolex Yacht-Master represents a highly competitive offering. Because these watches are purpose-built to withstand weather and water, they tend to age well even if they have been heavily worn, loved, and used. Another reason that collectors turn to the second-hand market is to get their hands on early models. Since the Yacht-Master has only been around for about 30 years, it is still quite easy to track down some of the early references. This is a great opportunity for collectors who not only love the Yacht-Master as a watch but who also want to make a smart investment for their collection that has great potential to increase in value.

Rolex Yacht-Master References

While the Yacht-Master is one of the newest Rolex models, only first introduced in 1992, the watch has been given a wide variety of upgrades in sizing, alloys, and bezels over the years. Here, this comprehensive list outlines all of the standard-production Yacht-Master references since its initial introduction. This list is also incredibly important as a reference if you are purchasing a Rolex Yacht-Master on the secondary market, as it will serve as a great quick reference for what models have been produced over the years.

Everything You Need To Know About The Rolex Yacht-Master Features & Options

Since the first all-gold Yacht-Master was released in 1992, Rolex has expanded the line with a variety of aesthetic details and mechanical upgrades. Here, we’ll explore the different options available on both the retail and secondary market for the Rolex Yacht-Master collection.

Rolex Yacht-Master materials

Today, Rolex no longer makes yellow gold versions of their standard Yacht-Master model, replacing it with Everose (their proprietary rose gold alloy) and 18k white gold. However, the 42mm version is the only white gold version (which was only just introduced at Baselworld 2019) is the only white gold model, as well as the only 42mm model in the collection. – Yellow Gold (discontinued) – Yellow Rolesor two-tone  (discontinued) – Everose Gold – Everose Rolesor two-tone – White Gold – Rolesium (Oystersteel and platinum)

Rolex Yacht-Master sizes

Rolex has produced this luxury sports watch in a few different sizes to ensure that everyone has a Yacht-Master that fits their wrist perfectly. However, the smaller sized Yacht-Master models, known as the Lady Yacht-Master watches, have been discontinued in favor of the newer 37mm models. Today, women are reaching for more unisex sizes and designs, which could be what lead to the decision by Rolex. But that doesn’t mean women collectors are strapped for choice — as the current retail models are incredibly luxe and sophisticated for enthusiasts of both sexes. Furthermore, the secondary market is a great place to still get your hands on the smaller sized Midsize and Lady Yacht-Master models, and going pre-owned also opens up the doors to now-discontinued models like the solid yellow gold Yacht-Master watches. – 29mm (discontinued) – 35mm (discontinued) – 37mm – 40mm – 42mm

Rolex Yacht-Master bezel

With the Rolex Yacht-Master, the materials and aesthetics of the bezel depend on the material used for the case. With the Yacht-Master, there are bezels that consist of solid 950 platinum or 18k gold with raised, polished numerals. There are also bezels that are matte black Cerachrom ceramic with raised numerals, which are typically only fitted to the various solid 18k gold Yacht Master references. One of the less common and more flashy Yacht-Master bezels is nicknamed the “gummy bear” and it features rainbow-colored sapphires set around the bezel.

Rolex Yacht-Master dial

The dial of the Yacht-Master is quite archetypal of other Rolex sports watches. To ensure the watch is easily readable, the dial layout of the Yacht-Master features Mercedes-style hands, lume-filled hour markers, and a date window over at 3 o’clock. The dial itself is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that has a Cyclops magnification lens for easier reading of the date. When it comes to the dial color of the Yacht-Master, there are several colors and materials that have been used over the years, like the beautiful blue dial on the ref. 116622 or the luxe sandblasted platinum dial that can be found on the now-discontinued version of this reference.

Rolex Yacht-Master bracelet

The Rolex Yacht-Master only ever features either an Oyster bracelet or an Oysterflex bracelet. The iconic, three-link bracelet Oyster bracelet is a Rolex staple, and it is featured across nearly the brand’s entire collection — from the Datejust to the Daytona to the Yacht-Master. In 2015, Rolex also introduced the now-famous Oysterflex bracelet on the then-new Everose gold Yacht-Master. This rubber bracelet is far more impressive than it appears at first glance. The rubber strap is actually reinforced by an internal flexible metal blade, making it incredibly durable and sporty, while still having this elevated aesthetic that matches the overall luxury feeling of this timepiece.

Rolex Yacht-Master movement

Depending on the size of the Yacht-Master watch, it will have a different movement to fit the case. Additionally, in 2019, Rolex updated the 40 version of the watch to feature the new-generation Cal. 3235 movement. Below are the sizes Rolex has used in its various Yacht-Master watches over the years.

– 29mm : Caliber 2135; Caliber 2235 – 35mm : Caliber 2135; Caliber 2235 – 37mm : Caliber 2236 – 40mm : Caliber 3135; Caliber 3235 – 42mm : Caliber 3235

Everything You Need To Know About The Rolex Yacht-Master II Features & Options

Below, we’ll outline the different options available on both the retail and pre-owned market for the Rolex Yacht-Master II collection.

Rolex Yacht-Master II materials

In keeping with the inherently luxurious feel of the Yacht-Master line, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is outfitted in some of the world’s finest alloys. Many collectors love this watch for its combination of precious metals and durable stainless steel — what Rolex calls Rolesor. On the Yacht-Master II, there is the Everose Rolesor which is beloved for the warm pink hue of its 18k Everose gold components. Another great combination is the white gold and platinum Yacht-Master II; however, this is obviously a much more opulent choice at represents the top-of-the-line offering in the Yacht-Master II lineup. Of course, there is also a stainless steel option with a blue ceramic bezel for those who just want sheer practicality and durability. Unlike the standard Yacht-Master, you can get this larger, more complicated timepiece outfitted in solid yellow 18k gold if you really want to go all out. – Yellow Gold – Everose Rolesor two-tone – White Gold and platinum – Oystersteel

Rolex Yacht-Master II sizes

There are a lot of features that separate the Rolex Yacht-Master II from the standard Yacht-Master, and the 44mm size is immediately one of the most noticeable. While the Yacht-Master II case is just 2mm larger than the largest Yacht-Master, this extra-large sizing helps this watch house a more complicated dial and movement.

– 44mm

Rolex Yacht-Master II bezel

Another one of the big differentiators with the Yacht-Master II is that large, beautiful bezel. The bidirectional rotatable ‘Ring Command bezel’ on the Yacht-Master II is specifically designed to help the wearer time out a regatta. Unlike most bezels that operate independently from the internal movement, the ‘Ring Command’ bezel on the Yacht-Master II actually works with the watch’s state-of-the-art movement. Rotating the bezel unlocks access to the programmable countdown timer, enabling quick and easy setting for use during competitions. While the design is incredibly complex, the aesthetics are beautifully simple.

When it comes to the look of the bezel itself, the Yacht-Master II does differ from the standard Yacht-Master. While a two-texture timing bezel defines the original model, the real star of the Rolex Yacht-Master II is that bright, beautiful blue Cerachrom bezel. This blue ceramic bezel is featured on the stainless steel, yellow gold and two-tone Everose Rolesor Yacht-Master II watches; however, the white gold models receive their bezels in sandblasted platinum.

Rolex Yacht-Master II dial

The Rolex Yacht-Master II dial layout is stunning, sophisticated, and totally different than any of the other Rolex dials due to its niche complication. On the dial, you will find a variety of features including the countdown display (which can be programmed anywhere from 1 to 10 minutes) that you can read via the red arrow-tipped hand. You will also notice the central flyback/fly-forward chronograph hand, the center hour and minute hands, and the running seconds sub-dial.

The dial of the Rolex Yacht-Master II is also outfitted with 12 lume-filled hour makers for added readability. Today, the most modern references are outfitted with Rolex’s Chromalight display, which is a luminescent material that emits a blue long-lasting glow.

You will also notice a big difference between the dial of the new generation of Yacht-Master II watches and the first generation, which featured baton-style hands that pointed to square hour markers. It was only in 2017 that Rolex decided to marry the style of the Yacht-Master II with the brand’s famous Mercedes-style hands. Rolex also updated the hour markers to feature a triangular hour marker at 12 and a rectangular hour marker at 6, rather than just square-shaped markers all the way around.

Rolex Yacht-Master II bracelet

Unlike the Yacht-Master which has two bracelets, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is only available with an Oyster bracelet. The sporty, durable 3-piece link bracelet is a staple for the brand’s sports watches, which makes it a perfect choice for this professional regatta watch. Rolex has also outfitted this Oyster bracelet with an Oysterlock folding clasp, built specifically to prevent the wearer from losing the watch due to accidental opening. This is a great feature for this model, which is purpose-built to be used during tough racing conditions.

Rolex Yacht-Master II movement

It’s clear that the Rolex Yacht-Master II is an incredible looking timepiece. But, the most impressive part of this watch is by far its movement. When the watch was first released, the Yacht-Master II was outfitted with the brand’s Caliber 4160, with Caliber 4161 making its debut a few years later in 2013.

Rolex Yacht-Master Ultimate Buying Guide Rolesor Blue Dial

The Rolex Yacht-Master II features one of the brand’s most complicated in-house movements to date — the self-winding mechanical chronograph, caliber 4160/4161. This movement boasts high-tech features like a countdown timer with both flyback and fly-forward functionality and a mechanical memory with on-the-fly chronograph synchronization, making it incredibly sophisticated. Additionally, the bezel (aka the Ring Command Bezel) is actually connected to the mechanism itself, allowing the wearer to adjust and set the countdown feature quickly and easily on the go. Rolex says it took its engineers some 35,000 hours of development to create this mechanism — and we think it was well worth it. – Ref. 116689 : Caliber 4160; Caliber 4161 – Ref. 116688 : Caliber 4160; Caliber 4161 – Ref. 116681 : Caliber 4160; Caliber 4161 – Ref. 116680 : Caliber 4161

Celebrities Who Wear the Rolex Yacht-Master

It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that one of Rolex’s most bold and luxurious watches is popular among the world’s most famous celebrities. One of the most well-known A-listers to sport the Yacht-Master is Mark Wahlberg, who is already a really big Rolex fan. We’ve seen him out and about in a solid 18k yellow gold Rolex Yacht-Master II, which totally pops against that blue ceramic bezel. Mark has no trouble making a statement with his watches, and that’s clear with this stunning timepiece.

Tennis champion Roger Federer also famously sports the top-of-the-line 18k white gold and platinum Yacht-Master II, while comedian and host Ellen DeGeneres is often spotted wearing her the 18k Everose gold Yacht-Master 40 with a black Cerachrom bezel and a black Oysterflex bracelet. Other celebrities that have been seen wearing the Yacht-Master include the following list of names, although there are many other stars who proudly have a Rolex Yacht-Master in their collections. – Russell Crowe – Lydia Ko – Sir Robin Knox-Johnston – Mark Wahlberg – Bruce Willis – Connor McGregor – Emeril Lagasse – David Beckham – Guy Fieri – Steven Gerrard – A$AP Rocky – Billy Joe Saunders – Flo Rida – Drake – Manny Pacquiao – Ellen DeGeneres – Ed Sheeran

How to Style The Rolex Yacht-Master

The Yacht-Master was an instant classic when it was introduced by Rolex, which means that it is incredibly easy to work it into your wardrobe. What we love so much about this watch collection — whether we’re talking about the Yacht-Master or the Yacht-Master II — is that it has this incredible balance of luxury and sports-oriented performance. Being able to dress this watch both up and down is what makes the Rolex Yacht-Master so much fun to wear. Here are just three classic ways you can wear this watch.

Yacht-Master with Bracelets

Ladies love this watch for its luxe finishing and superior durability. What woman doesn’t want a watch they can wear to drinks, diving, or lounging in the cabana? Because of that, we love pairing a beautiful two-tone Rolex Yacht-Master with bangles and bracelets that match the gold components on the watch. For example, we love the pairing of the 29mm Lady Yacht Master ref. 169623 with a gold Cartier love bracelet bangle and a linked chain. If you’re feeling really bold, you might as well go all out and pair your gold bracelets with a solid, 18k yellow gold Yacht-Master. Fair warning: you’re going to not be able to stop staring at your wrist. Chances are, no one else will be able to either.

Dressing Up With The Matte Black ref. 268655

We love this unisex 37mm timepiece because it works equally well on both men and women’s wrists. What makes this watch so special is the rubber Oysterflex strap watch that allows it to be sporty and durable. Matching that bracelet with the matte black bezel and dial really elevates the entire watch, which looks handsome and luxurious with the warm 18k Everose gold case. So when evening comes, head to the bar for sundowners wearing this ref. 268655. Of course, it will look good with a dark jacket. But, this watch will really pop if you pair it with a warm-colored shirt that accentuates the natural Everose hue. Finish the outfit off with dark wash jeans and you’ve mastered the elegant-meets-accessible look that defines this modern luxury watch.

Casual Elegance with the Yacht Master II

The two-tone Everose Rolesor Yacht-Master II is the ultimate luxury sports watch. You have luxury elements like the ceramic Cerachrom blue bezel and 18k Everose gold alongside durable Oystersteel and one of Rolex’s most complicated mechanisms to date. Because of this watch’s exclusivity, durability, water resistance, and functionality, there really isn’t a better choice for spending time on the high seas. And while this watch was built to time out a regatta, it is going to look just as good on your wrist while you lounge, swim, and play. We suggest pairing your Two-Tone Everose Rolesor’s blue bezel with a matching blue suit. Alternatively, you can pair it with a white and blue pinstripe shirt, rolling up the sleeves and unbuttoning the top few buttons to make your look feel more casual.

What is the difference between the yacht master and the yacht master ii.

The standard Rolex Yacht-Master is a luxury-oriented sport watch that displays the time and date. The Yacht-Master II joined the Rolex lineup in 2007 and offers never before seen functionality thanks to its regatta timer. Powered by the Calibre 4161 — one of the most complicated Rolex movements ever made (second only to the annual calendar found in the Sky-Dweller — the Yacht-Master II has a patented mechanical memory and on-the-fly-synchronization used for the regatta timer. Additionally, the bezel is different on the Yacht-Master II because it controls part of the movement inside the case rather than just working as an external mechanism to help track elapsed time. The Rolex Yacht-Master II also has an entirely different aesthetic and features a larger 44m case with chronograph pushers on either side of the winding crown.

Is a Rolex Yacht Master a good investment?

Yes. The Rolex Yacht-Master is a good investment for collectors for two main reasons. For one, these watches have historically held great value because of their uniqueness and sportiness; however, at the present time, they remain somewhat undervalued compared to their siblings in the Rolex catalog. Consequently, they offer significant potential for appreciation in the future. Secondly, the Rolex Yacht-Master is a luxury watch and is often outfitted in precious metals. These precious metals inherently allow it to hold great value as the years go on, and its premium construction guarantees that it will always be worth something.

What was the Rolex Yacht-Master built to do?

The Rolex Yacht-Master was first created as a luxury sports watch, whereas the Yacht-Master II was built as a professional regatta timer with a luxury flare. Comparatively, the Yacht-Master can time events up to 60 minutes with its rotating bezel and the Yacht-Master II is outfitted with a countdown timer with flyback or fly-forward functionality to use when timing out a regatta race.

How do you use the Yachtmaster II?

While the Yacht-Master II looks quite complicated, Rolex has made sure that using it is actually quite intuitive. After setting the adjustable countdown timer to your desired setting, you start the time. Press the top button to start the countdown timer, then pressing the top button a second time will stop the timer. However, by pressing the bottom button while the chronograph is running, that will adjust the timer forwards or backward to the nearest minute — allowing it to be perfectly synchronized to the official race clock.

How can I spot a fake Rolex Yacht Master?

As with any Rolex watch, the clues are in the details. When it comes to the Yacht-Master, you’re going to want to look at details like the adjustable countdown timer, which is incredibly complicated, making it almost impossible for fake counterfeit watches to replicate. Additionally, Yacht-Master models are luxury sports watches crafted from the world’s best materials and to the highest possible standards. If you notice any defects like dial printing or finishing looks less than perfect, there is a good chance that you are dealing with a fake Rolex Yacht-Master.

Watches In The Wild The Road Through America, Episode 1: A Model Of Mass Production

Hands-On The Rolex Yachtmaster II Regatta Timer, Ref. 116680

The rolex yacht-master ii: for those who consider themselves rolex enthusiasts, it's one of the most polarizing watches the crown produces. and yet there is more – much more – to this relative behemoth than meets the eye. we wanted to see what would happen if we met this technically unique, programmable flyback yacht timer chronograph on its own terms – read on to join us in our journey into one of the most idiosyncratically styled and mechanically sophisticated rolexes ever made..

rolex yachtmaster homage

I’m going to be completely honest: I was thoroughly prepared to have a negative reaction to this watch. Let’s face it; it’s a head-scratcher for the average Rolex/Submariner/GMT Master/Day-Date lover. First of all it’s pretty damned big. This is a 44 mm watch; it was born a 44 mm watch and it’ll die a 44 mm watch and that is nothing you or anybody else can do about it. You can have it in four different metals, and therefore, weights, ranging from steel (heavy) to gold/steel (heavier) to solid yellow gold (even heavier) to  platinum and white gold combined (Schwarzeneggerian). It has a Cerachrom bezel in an absolutely screaming shade of blue, and it says YACHT-MASTER in giant letters right across the bottom third or so just to remove any lingering shade of doubt in the minds of any small-craft skipper for leagues around that they are in the presence of, well, the Master of a Yacht; it is not an introverted watch by any stretch of the imagination.

On top of everything else, the Yacht-Master II has a complication that pretty much no watch guy or gal ever can remember what do with, or has a perceived need for: it is a regatta timer, which is about as niche a complication as you can imagine. If you get a bunch of watch nuts together there is an excellent chance that you can get a more lucid explanation out of somebody for the Equation of Time than you can for a regatta timer (which is saying something) and it says something about the relative obscurity of the complication in general, and the relative niche-ness of the Yacht-Master II in particular, that when we got it into the office we had five people who live and breathe watches sitting around scratching our heads because no one could quite remember how the darned thing works. You put all those things together and you should have a watch that a dyed-in-the-wool horological classicist should thoroughly disdain. Right?

rolex yachtmaster homage

Actually, wrong. But let’s back up a bit.

First of all this is technically a very interesting watch and it’s worth your attention just on the level of interesting horological problem solving alone. A regatta timer is used by the skipper of a yacht to determine when their vessel is allowed to cross the starting line. Sailboats can’t just hover at the starting line of a yacht race, so what happens is that the racing committee establishes a countdown period during which the boats have to tack back and forth at the starting line without actually crossing; if you cross early, there is a penalty and if you are too cautious and cross late you will probably cross the finish line behind the boats that made it over the start line ahead of you. The countdown can be anywhere from five to ten minutes depending on the rules and race.

rolex yachtmaster homage

The Yacht-Master II is a programmable, flyback regatta timer that allows you to select a countdown interval of anything from one to ten minutes; in addition if you have started the countdown early or late, you can synchronize your watch “on the fly” when you hear the second of the two audible signals which are usually given at the start of a race (the signal to start the countdown comes first, and is usually followed by a warning signal closer to the start). Here’s how it works.

To set the countdown timer, you turn the bezel (Rolex calls it the "Command Bezel") a quarter turn to the left. This locks the lower chrono pusher and engages the setting mechanism for the triangular red countdown hand. You then unscrew the crown to its first position, and set the countdown hand – setting is one-way only but at 10 minutes, if you continue to turn the crown, the countdown hand will fly back to 1 and you can continue until you reach the desired number of minutes. When you’re done, you screw the crown back down, and turn the bezel back to its starting position, and you’re ready to regatta.

rolex yachtmaster homage

When the first gun (or other audible signal) is heard, you start the countdown . . . and that’s it. Now a really neat trick here is that you may, for some reason, have started your countdown too early, or too late. If that’s the case, all you have to do is wait for the second gun/signal, and hit the re-set button – the seconds hand will fly back to the zero mark and begin running again immediately; and the minute countdown hand will fly back to the nearest minute and likewise start counting down again. It’s the fact that the flyback is to the nearest minute, not to zero, that allows you to re-synch your countdown with the official countdown time, that gives the Yacht-Master II much of its utility, and much of its technical interest.

rolex yachtmaster homage

Okay, sure it’s technically interesting – but what about the aesthetics? All I can tell you is that, much to my very pleasant surprise, it was colossally fun to wear in every sense of the word. The fact that it is so unapologetically extroverted is actually the secret to its appeal.  The weight isn't a problem (at least, not for me, and not in steel) and I found I could wear it all day without discomfort despite the overall size – partly thanks to the downward curvature of the lugs, which ensured a comfortable fit on my 7 inch wrist.  The sharply contrasting deep blued hands, white dial, and red countdown hand – and, yes, that bright blue bezel – give the whole watch a suitably jaunty, nautical feel and make it a pleasure to look at (and at night visibility is very good; the lume on the hands and dial is almost startlingly bright).

Yes, this is an extroverted watch, but the quality of execution is very clean and very high (as is usually the case with Rolex) and it’s so much the opposite of what I’d ordinarily wear that having it on gave a feeling almost like a Walter Mitty fantasy coming to life. I felt like a guy who’s worn a blue suit and rep tie and driven a four door Merc his whole life, who somehow one day finds himself in a pair of ripped jeans and a beat up flight jacket, cruising down some winding secondary road on an old shovelhead Harley, and suddenly catches himself thinking, My god, all the wasted years. Ultimately I started to feel that objecting to the over-the-top-ness  of the Yacht-Master II was silly, even narcissistic – if you go into a Joss Whedon actioner expecting a Lars Von Trier art-house tearjerker to unspool, you probably have only yourself to blame.

rolex yachtmaster homage

It is a rationally appealing uitlitarian tool watch? I'm not the one to ask. There is no way for me to evaluate what someone who actually owns a ’36 Herreshoff classic yacht and takes it on the regatta circuit would actually think of the Yacht-Master II, or whether they would find it useful. But I can tell you that it is actually a ton of fun to wear, and a big part of the reason is the very thing many object to at first – that this is a watch that pulls no punches when it comes to being larger than life.

It has that one most essential element for something to be a successful style exercise: the courage of its convictions, and if you think of yourself resolutely as a smaller-than-forty millimeter, tasteful restraint kinda guy, get one on your wrist for a surprisingly refreshing change of pace, and you can feel larger than life too.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II 116680 as shown, $18,750, 44 mm diameter case in 904L stainless steel. Bidirectional rotatable "Command Bezel" with blue Cerachrom insert; water resistance 100 meters/10 bar.

Movement, Rolex 4161 self-winding programmable flyback regatta timer with mechanical memory and "on-the-fly" synchronization; Parachrom blue antimagnetic balance spring.

Bracelet, Oyster, flat three piece links with Oysterlock safety clasp.

How We Select The Homage Watches

When we selected these Rolex homage watches, we considered several important factors, such as design, reputation, maintenance, performance, movement, and price.

We look at several major factors when selecting homage watches in this list. Often these factors may clash with each other. For example, low prices may result in poor materials and movement.

However, we try to balance between these factors when producing this list:

We try to select Rolex homage watches with good design. When we say good design, we mean the design is similar to the original.

This is because there are Rolex homage watches that may only faintly look like the original model they are designed after. These models may be called inspired designs and can stand on their own.

However, we are not after those watches. We only recommend Rolex homage watches that look similar to the original, with minor design differences.

Maintenance

One of the biggest worries about homage watches is maintenance. This is a legitimate worry, especially if you are buying Rolex homage watches that are unpopular.

As a result, when we recommend models here, we only list watches you can easily maintain. Some, such as Stührling or Orient, may have physical stores where you can walk in and have your watches serviced.

There are also brands with a solid online presence, where your watchmaker can easily order parts to service them.

Homages can be a minefield, especially when it comes to quality. This is because homages vary widely in build and finish. Low-priced homages may look crude and unrefined, while premium alternatives such as those from Steinhart may cost up to 4-figures.

Here, we only recommend Rolex homage watches that are built with quality parts and materials under $300. Watches in this list may come with solid water resistance, sapphire crystal, and stainless steel body.

Homages can also come with various movements, which can be difficult to service. Lower-priced Rolex homage watches may try to slip in some generic Chinese automatic or obscure quartz movement.

These movements may be hard to service and maintain since few watchmakers are familiar with them. Plus, parts may be hard to find when repairs are needed.

We understand that some buyers of Rolex homage watches may operate with a tight budget and want to avoid splurging too much money on a watch.

However, we also understand that quality is still a key point for buyers of Rolex homage watches.

As a result, we try to recommend budget watches under $300, as we see that watches within this price range offer the best balance between affordable price and quality.

How Did I Come Up With My List?

6 best rolex submariner homages, 5 quality rolex submariner alternatives, which rolex submariner homage should you get.

Despite being the most popular watch in the world, a Submariner isn’t easy to get a hold of. Prices start at $8,000 (if you’re lucky), go as high as $600,000, with a price ceiling that seems to get higher everyday.

Fortunately, you don’t need to go broke for this watch’s best qualities, with our six best Rolex Submariner homages, plus five alternatives.

The Rolex Submariner is the most recognizable watch in the world.

Even with all of its colorways and different constructions, it’s the Sub’s core architecture that makes it so popular.

With this king of dives, Rolex took a simple function-forward watch and redefined men’s style—with the help of 007 of course.

It’s also the watch that launched a thousand homages, and not all of them are good. Fortunately, the six Rolex Submariner homages in this roundup are. Plus, even the most expensive entries are a fraction of the cost of a Sub.

Read on to see which of the six is the best fit for you, or to find out if you’d rather go with one of our five alternatives.

You don’t work in the auction industry for as long as I have, without constantly coming across Submariners of all references. I developed this list using my background as an auction professional and as a collector, as well as my experience with these choice homages and many more that didn’t make the cut.

I also took counsel with colleagues, watch enthusiasts of all levels, and watch experts in my field, not to mention my hours of forum and review diving. As such, All perspectives and priorities are considered in this list.

Steinhart Ocean One Vintage 39

Our Top Pick Badge Watchoso 1

  • Medium Wrists Ideal for 6.6 to 7.4 inch wrists. Metrics: 35-45mm case size / 42-56mm lug to lug width, while also considering size of bezel, hour marker circle size, lug protrusion, strap, and color of dial i

Steinhart is an excellent brand to turn to for all types of Submariner homages , whether you’re in it for the Mercedes hands, or on the lookout for a Kermit Sub lookalike ( Ocean 39 Green ). Though, we’re focusing on the Gnomon-exclusive Steinhart Ocean One Vintage .

Rooted in its own history, separate from the Sub, this Ocean One is based on watches issued by the British military in the 1970s, which explains the tropical indices.

The hands add a lot of visual character that’s unique, but familiar. The hour hand is alpha-shaped like a vintage MilSub, but wider than standard. It’s an overall bold, but not loud, aesthetic.

It runs on Sellita’s SW200, which is a pretty standard workhorse known for its reliability. Steinhart opts for their Elaboré version of the SW200 though, which is adjusted to raise the accuracy from between +/-12 and +/- 30 seconds a day to between +/-7 and +/- 20 seconds a day.

What I Like

  • The combination of Submariner best practices, including the modern Sub template and vintage tropical hands, combined with Steinhart-unique features make this watch an excellent homage and a stylish watch in its own right.
  • Functional and practical, this watch is equipped with a domed sapphire, 120-click bezel, and 300m of water resistance.
  • The SW200 Elaboré movement is exceedingly reliable and accurate.

What I Don’t Like

  • The lume is surprisingly weak. It’s still visible in the dark, but definitely the lowest-quality of all the watch’s functions.

What Do Other Reviewers Say?

This Steinhart is one of the most popular Sub homages on the internet, thanks to its blend of practicality and style. Reviewers love the accurate hacking and precision.

One reviewer on Gnomon even claims his watch runs at +1 second a day.

The non-jangly bracelet is another quality many praise, especially since that’s an easy shortcut for less expensive watches.

There are a few complaints about the lume. Also, some reviewers think the hour hand should be smaller, but I think it gives it character.

The Verdict

Just like its source material, the Steinhart Ocean One Vintage 39 scores high on form and function.

This watch is well-finished and accurately blue-printed against the Sub to satiate you lookalike seekers. Still, it also boasts thoughtful differences, giving it a level of genuineness that doesn’t take it out of homage territory.

Performance-wise, Steinhart opts for the premium of two SW200 movements. Inside and out, the Ocean One offers an overall compelling value proposition.

Ginault Ocean Rover

Upgrade Pick Badge Watchoso 1

  • Movement:  Automatic
  • Case Size:  40mm
  • Lug to Lug:  47.5mm

Despite its over-1000 price tag, you get a lot of bang for your buck with Ginault’s Ocean Rover . The level of detail and finishing is comparable to Swiss watches several times the Ocean Rover’s price.

The indices and hands, for example, are impeccably polished and placed. If you look really closely at them, you’ll notice how deeply cut each is, compared to the outline. This depth and extra surface area is one of the reasons its lume is so strong.

The other reason for this brilliant lume leads us to the next unique quality about Ginault. They research best practices and then replicate them on American soil–or so they claim (more on that later). Their lume is based on SuperLuminova C3, with an afterglow that lasts a good 12 hours even in complete darkness.

Meanwhile, the Ginault caliber 7275 that the Ocean Rover runs on is a 25-jewel automatic based on ETA 2824-2, a durable movement known for being used by Tudor and even Omega before they went co-axial.

  • Finished at a luxury level, this watch has a beautifully signed crown featuring the brand’s flower logo, a satin brushed top and polished sides, and flawless applications on and off the dial.
  • The look is based on vintage Submariners , but with an extra pop of color via the red lollipop second hand, distinguishing it from other homages.
  • It runs on an American-made clone of ETA 2824-2, which is strong, easy to use, and easily serviced.
  • Ginault is a controversial company because the owner used to make replicas, and they aren’t very transparent about where parts come from. Fortunately, they seem to be climbing out of this hole, because of their high-quality timepieces.
  • Related to transparency, they use the word “chronometer” to describe their movement, which is misleading. It’s not a COSC-certified Chronometer with a capital C, but a literal chronometer, which just means it tells time.

Reviewers love that this homage is so high-quality, from the sapphire crystal to the finishing. Since the timepiece is objectively well-made, the main gripes aren’t around the watch itself, but, as mentioned, Ginault as a company.

There’s a lot of forum discussions and reviews mentioning that the owner started out making replicas, and the company even disappeared between 2012 to 2016. Still, more and more reviewers and forum-goers believe this is all in the past, and that Ginault has “gone legit.”

There’s complaints about the cloned movement too, and many doubt the legitimacy of the “hand built in America” dial label. The FTC doesn’t have an official requirement for that appellate, and Ginault’s website isn’t particularly transparent about part origins.

Regardless of their past, many also claim that their customer service is professional, responsive, and even amenable to the watch community’s desire for more transparency from them.

If you’re looking for a luxury homage that’s still a fraction of the cost of a Submariner , the Ginault Ocean Rover is for you. The details are of Rolex-level quality to the naked eye, but features like the red second hand ensure it’s an homage and not an illegal replica.

Speaking of which, while I don’t like Ginault’s sordid past, I’m not that worried about it either. This watch is too good. They just need to offer us more transparency.

Tiger Concept Vintage Snowflake

Best on a Budget Badge Watchoso 1

  • Case Size:  43.8mm
  • Lug to Lug:  51mm
  • Water Resistance:  30m

The Tiger Concept Vintage Diver with snowflake hands is a cross between a Rolex watch and a Tudor watch. The basic design and palette is built like the first Submariner , but chunkier and bolder, to match the very modern Tudor-like qualities.

These features include the cut-out style indices and the popular snowflake hands, the very old and the very new in one place.

Other than its sub-200 price, the next best thing about this watch is the ability to opt for slight customizations. You can get it with or without the Tiger Concept logo on the dial, and you can choose the movement.

The slightly more reliable Miyota movement costs about $45 more than the Chinese-made DG2813. However, the DG2813 actually offers fine reliability for its price. It’s just simpler and more roughly finished.

  • The hands and bezel are well-polished, and the text is neatly applied on the dial, which is impressive for this cost bracket.
  • Tiger Concept offers custom options on this watch, including a choice of two movements.
  • With its vintage Submariner design foundation and modern-looking Tudor features, this watch has an unusual and fun look.
  • The bracelet this watch comes with is rattly and hollow.
  • The bezel is super loose and wobbly.

Many online reviewers consider the 16800 the gold standard for Tiger Concept divers with snowflake hands. The bright blue is lively and complements the white hands and indices. The 16800, however, is hard to find these days.

Plus, the current available black version is more Submariner-looking. Reviewers love the look and price of this watch, but many agree that its cheapness is given away when working the loose bezel. One Reddit reviewer even reports that it spins when it brushes against his sleeve

The Tiger Concept Vintage diver with snowflake hands shines on two fronts. First, the custom options and finishing are excellent qualities, especially for their price. Second, the mix of Tudor and Rolex features, and modern and vintage styles, create a visually interesting watch that’s unlike most Sub homages .

Squale 1521 Militaire

Squale 1521 Militaire

  • Case Size:  42mm
  • Lug to Lug:  48.4mm
  • Band:  Rubber strap
  • Water Resistance:  500m

The special ingredient of the Squale 1521 Militaire is its case. It was designed by the founder of the brand, Charles von Büren, and gives the watch a whopping 500m of water resistance.

Naturally, this design was one of the most influential in the ‘70s. Blancpain and Tag Heuer even purchased this case to provide their watches with more water resistance.

The Militaire isn’t just more function-forward than the Submariner , but has a more tool-like aesthetic to go with its practicalist qualities. The crown is out of the way at 4 o’clock, creating no need for guards, and the long indices and bright minute hand provide maximum legibility.

Other top-grade functions include a satisfyingly crisp bezel and an especially bright lume. It’s no wonder the original version was chosen as an official watch for the Italian Navy.

  • The heavy tool watch style partners excellently with the textured rubber strap it comes with, as well as other professional and casual bracelets like NATOs and simple leathers.
  • With 500m of water resistance, this watch can go deeper than most divers, including the Submariner .
  • Its connection to the brand’s founder and the Italian Navy gives this watch a cool history, just like the Sub has.
  • Its rugged look isn’t as versatile as the more understated Submariner.

Because of the watch’s historical design and promised functionality, a lot of hype came with the 1521’s debut a few years ago. Now that we’ve lived with it for a while, many reviewers and forum-goers think it’s the Squale to have.

Many think it pairs well with NATOs, which I agree with, though several reviewers are concerned that it’s too aesthetically functionalist to pair it with a suit a la James Bond.

The Squale 1521 Militaire leans harder into the tool watch side of things than the Sub , both in its looks and its operational qualities. It’s efficient and simple, with 200m more water resistance. And while it isn’t as famous as its Rolex counterpart, dive watch aficionados love that it has its own important history.

Armida A9

  • Closest Homage
  • Case Size:  38.5mm
  • Lug to Lug:  47.8mm

The Armida A9 is an almost one-to-one homage to a specific hard-to-find and sought-after collector’s piece: The Rolex Military Submariner , otherwise known as the MilSub, which was standard issue equipment for the Ministry of Defense.

The A9 has all of the signature Milsub features, from the sword hands to the smaller case size, which is rare even in the homage game. It’s as if Armida knows that even the most well-connected collectors will never get their hands on a MilSub, so they’re serving up the closest thing we can get—for just around $500, no less.

The drilled lugs are a nice touch, as is the signed crown. The hands are well polished, and the light plays off it beautifully, complementing the matte dial.

  • The dial and case are designed almost exactly like the MilSub, one of the rarest and highest-priced vintage Submariners on the secondary market.
  • The signature sword hands are immaculately polished and complement the matte dial.
  • This watch comes with a one year warranty which is recognized internationally.
  • As with all Armida watches, the bracelet clasp is flimsy, especially at the top portion. They also overcompensate for this by making it difficult to open.

Reviewers are grateful that Armida offers a MilSub-specific Submariner homage , since most lookalikes take inspiration from the standard vintage and modern references.

Many in the blog and forum community mention that while the bezel clicks are fine, it’s not the best out there. One forum-goer from Watchuseek mentions his Seiko Sumo’s bezel turns better.

There are a few complaints about the flimsy bracelet clasp, and the fact that it digs into your wrist.

If you’re looking for a vintage MilSub homage, the Armida A9 is an aesthetic dead-ringer,  thanks to the high-quality sword hands and 316L stainless steel body. It also runs on a respectably reliable Miyota automatic movement and has a sapphire crystal, proving Armida doesn’t just focus on looks.

Tisell Sub Diver

  • Lug to Lug:  47mm
  • Water Resistance:  200m

As an homage, the Tisell Sub Diver is a lot like the Armida, but for a classic Submariner instead of the MilSub specifically. Rather, it’s an almost one-to-one of the Submariner Date, though many consider this to be the standard since it’s more popular than the no date version.

It has the Mercedes hands, the applied indices, and the cyclops date window. While obviously not as crisp as the Submariner’s, the rotating ceramic bezel turns pretty well, though it only goes one direction.

This watch runs on Miyota’s 9015 movement, which, on paper, has an accuracy rating of +/-10 seconds per day up to +/- 30 seconds per day. However, my experience with Tisell is that it’ll be closer to around +2 seconds a day.

  • Aesthetically, this watch is one of the closest to a Submariner Date on the market.
  • The Miyota 9015 movement is far more accurate on this Tisell than it is in other watches.
  • The sapphire crystal is AR coated on the inside for clarity even on the sunniest days.
  • The date isn’t perfectly aligned, often sitting just a little high in the window.

Reviewers report that this Tisell not only looks like a standard Sub Date, but wears like one too thanks to the similar size.

One forum-goer on Watchuseek theorizes that Tisell regulates the Miyota movement after they’re cased up, which makes sense considering how accurate it is.

The Tisell Sub Diver is for you if you’re looking for the closest visual homage to the Submariner Date that also has a touch of horological chops. Design-wise, the only thing it’s missing is the Rolex label. Function-wise, the 24-jewel Miyota automatic movement is accurate and reliable.

Tisell Sub Diver

Unlike an homage, which is built as a lookalike tribute to a more expensive watch, an alternative is a comparable model, often a competitor or similar option within the same brand.

Sometimes alternatives are less expensive, and sometimes they aren’t. Alternatives are usually in the same category as the watch you’re considering. So if you’re in the market for

Omega Seamaster Diver 300m

Omega Seamaster Diver 300m

  • Large Wrists Ideal for 7.5+ inch wrists. Metrics: 40mm+ case size / 50mm+ lug to lug width, while also considering size of bezel, hour marker circle size, lug protrusion, strap, and color of dial i
  • Versatile Pick
  • Movement:  In-house swiss automatic
  • Lug to Lug:  50mm

The Omega Seamaster 300 is of equal quality to the Submariner . They both have 300m of water resistance, a COSC Chronometer certified movement, and are equipped with plenty of proprietary innovations. Plus, they’ve both been worn by James Bond.

The Seamaster has a less restrained look though. Its bracelet features more links for added complexity and lightplay, while thel face sports the iconic wave dial and partially skeletonized hands.

Rolex Sea Dweller

Rolex Sea Dweller

  • Case Size:  43mm, 44mm
  • Lug to Lug:  50mm, 50.5mm
  • Band:  Stainless steel bracelet or stainless steel with gold middle-links
  • Water Resistance:  1220m, 3900m

While the Submariner was built for recreational divers, the Rolex Sea Dweller is made to go much deeper. It has a larger case that’s water resistant at 1220m, a huge achievement in the dive watch world.

Another big difference, vital to deep divers, is the Sea Dweller’s helium escape valve. This is used to help the watch decompress as the divers make their way back up to the surface. Basically, the Sea Dweller is a functionally leveled up Submariner.

Tudor Black Bay

Tudor Black Bay

  • Case Size:  41mm

Tudor and Rolex being sister companies, the Tudor Black Bay is like a more modern Submariner . Sure, they’re both built with top-grade materials like sapphire crystal and COSC movements, but the Black Bay’s snowflake hands give it a less traditional aesthetic. Plus, it’s way more affordable than the Rolex, and you get a five-year transferable guarantee that mercifully doesn’t require you to register for it.

Oris Aquis

  • Case Size:  39.5mm
  • Lug to Lug:  46mm

Like Rolex, Oris only offers mechanical watches. The 26-jewel movement in the Oris Aquis is based on SW001 which is precise, robust, and reliable. It’s a slightly glossier timepiece than the understated Submariner, with its sunburst dial and gem-like indices that provide beautiful lightplay.

At 39.5mm, the Aquis also suits more wrists than the Sub, and at usually under $2000, it also suits more budgets.

Breitling Superocean

Breitling Superocean

The Breitling Superocean hasn’t changed much visually since the ‘50s, much like the Submariner . More than looks, however, these two have almost identical function features: 70-hour power reserves, COSC movements, and excellent lume.

However, the Breitling Superocean has 100m less water resistance. What it loses in depth capability, it makes up for with an eye-catching design that includes bold arrow and sword hands, a silky blue dial, and a utilitarian rubber strap.

Steinhart offers many effective Sub homages, none more comprehensive than the Ocean One Vintage 39 , which also stands on its own as a great dive watch.

Steinhart Ocean One Vintage 39

If you want to level up though, the Ginault Ocean Rover is our upgrade pick because of its luxury-level attention to detail and finishing.

Ginault Ocean Rover

On the other end of the price spectrum, the Tiger Concept watch , adorned with those Tudor-like snowflake hands, is easily found for under $200.

Tiger Concept Vintage Snowflake

Meanwhile, the Squale 1521 is known for its history and intense 500m of water resistance.

If you’re looking for the closest visual homages, the Armida A9 looks just like a MilSub, and the Tisell is nigh identical to a Submariner Date.

It’s all about deciding what qualities you love most about the Submariner, picking your budget, and going from there.

What is the best Rolex Submariner homage?

It depends what you’re looking for in an homage, but the Steinhart Ocean One Vintage 39 offers topnotch design and function, as well as a relatively middle-of-the-road price.

Is Tudor a Rolex homage?

No, Tudor is Rolex’s sister company. Both are owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER SIZES

The Yacht-Master line is one of the most varied Rolex collections due mainly to the number of sizes made available. The smaller sizes, particularly the Lady Yacht-Master models, have been discontinued, but are still available in the pre-owned market.

  • 29mm (discontinued)
  • 35mm (discontinued)

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER MATERIALS

The solid 18k yellow gold and two-tone models of the Yacht-Master have been discontinued and replaced with the Everose and White Gold versions. The 37 and 40mm sizes come in Everose, Everose Rolesor, and Rolesium metals, while the 42mm comes exclusively in White Gold.

  • Yellow Gold (discontinued)
  • Yellow Rolesor (Steel and Yellow Gold – discontinued)
  • Everose Gold
  • Everose Rolesor (Steel and Everose Gold)
  • Rolesium (Oystersteel and platinum)

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER BEZELS

The bezel material used for the Yacht-Master depends on the metal or alloy used for the case.

  • Matte Cerachrom bezel – 18k Everose and white gold models
  • 18k Gold bezel – Rolesor steel and gold models
  • 950 Platinum – Rolesium steel and platinum models

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER BRACELETS

The Rolex Yacht-Master has only been equipped with the three-link Oyster bracelet and the Oysterflex bracelet, which combines rubber with an internal flexible metal blade.

The Oysterflex can only be found on the solid 18k Everose and white gold models with matte ceramic bezels.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER MOVEMENTS

The Yacht-Master uses a time-and-date movement that changes depending on the size of the watch. Below are the movements used for each size.

  • 29mm – Caliber 2135; Caliber 2235
  • 35mm – Caliber 2135; Caliber 2235
  • 37mm – Caliber 2236

  • 42mm – Caliber 3235

FEATURES OF THE ROLEX YACHTMASTER II

Rolex yacht-master ii design.

The  Rolex Yacht-Master II  is one of the brand’s largest watches. Each model comes with a 44mm Oyster case that is water resistant to 100 meters, a Triplock winding crown, a Ring Command Bezel, two chronograph pushers, and an Oyster bracelet.

Rolex yachtmaster ii

Rolex Yacht-Master II Rolesium and Everose Rolesor Models

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II MATERIALS

All Rolex Yacht-Master II models come in the same 44mm case size. Models are available in the following metals:

  • Yellow Gold
  • White Gold and Platinum
  • Everose Rolesor (stainless steel and Everose gold)
  • Oystersteel
  • The materials used for the bezel differ depending on the material of the case.

These are the available configurations:

  • Cerachrom Bezel – Yellow Gold, Everose Rolesor, Oystersteel
  • 950 Platinum – White Gold

  • Ref 116689 – Caliber 4160; Caliber 4161
  • Ref 116688 – Caliber 4160; Caliber 4161

Popular Rolex Yacht-Master Models

The  Rolex Yacht-Master  and Yacht-Master II are both excellent luxury watches that can suit any lifestyle. The Yacht-Master fits the mold of classic Rolex sports watches; while the Yacht-Master II has pushed the boundaries of what regatta watches can do. You can’t go wrong with the Rolex Yacht-Master, but here are some collector’s favorites:

Rolex yachtmaster everose and white gold

Rolex yachtmaster rhodium dial

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER RHODIUM DIAL

The stunning combination of Oystersteel and 950 platinum was made even more beautiful with the addition of a sunburst rhodium dial. This luxurious watch is part of the series of Yachtmasters introduced in 2016, which were upgraded with the Caliber 3235 movement mentioned previously. The slate dial is paired with turquoise details on the model signature and seconds hand, which gives just the right amount of color on the sleek monochromatic design.

5t4a6354

Common Questions About the Rolex Yacht-Master

Built for the sea, but stylish enough for any occasion, the Rolex Yacht-Master is one of the most desired sports watches in the brand’s catalog. Here are some of the most common questions asked about the Rolex Yacht-Master.

WHAT IS A ROLEX YACHT-MASTER?

The Rolex Yacht-Master is a collection of watches built for yachting and sailing. It is composed of two families of watches: the Yacht-Master, a luxury watch designed to be worn on while lounging on a boat; and the Yacht-Master II, a functional sports watch designed to accurately time the start of a regatta race.

WHY IS THE ROLEX YACHT-MASTER SO EXPENSIVE?

As a line of sport watches with special focus on aesthetics, the Rolex Yacht-Master collection evokes an unmistakable sense of luxury than can only be achieved by using the finest materials.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II in particular, is equipped with exclusive functions and features such as the programmable countdown with mechanical memory and the Ring Command Bezel.

The architecture, manufacturing, and innovative features of the Yacht-Master collection make it unique in the world of watches and therefore fetches a higher price tag.

HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY ROLEX YACHT-MASTER IS GENUINE?

A genuine Rolex watch will be beautifully finished and decorated in keeping with the brand’s uncompromising quality standards. If you see any sign of imperfection on the watch, such as misaligned or misspelled text, unfinished surfaces, or wrong engravings and markings, it is likely a fake.

It is always advisable to do research beforehand so you can check if the details on your watch is in tune with the model’s features.

We also advise clients to only purchase a watch from a reputable and trusted dealer, who can provide a guarantee of authenticity on the watch.

IS THE ROLEX YACHT-MASTER WATERPROOF?

Rolex Yacht-Master watches are guaranteed water resistant to a depth of 100 meters of 330 feet. The collection was not made specifically for diving, but they come with screw-down crowns and case backs, which protect the movement from moisture and dust that can be encountered with sporting use.

Staying on course

The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 40 in Oystersteel and platinum with an Oyster bracelet.

Bidirectional rotatable bezel, timing the distance.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background.

This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

Exceptional legibility

Like all Rolex Professional watches, the Yacht-Master 40 offers exceptional legibility in all circumstances, and especially in the dark, thanks to its Chromalight display.

The broad hands and hour markers in simple shapes – triangles, circles, rectangles – are filled with a luminescent material emitting a long-lasting glow.

A legendary combination

Many Rolex watches are available with the now-legendary combination of yellow, white or Everose gold and steel known as Rolesor, but Rolesium is a creation specific to the Yacht-Master.

While the case and bracelet are in rugged Oystersteel, the bezel of the Rolesium versions is made of platinum, imparting a silvery whiteness and vibrant luminosity for an unmistakable sense of luxury.

The Oyster bracelet

Alchemy of form and function.

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex.

This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.
