If you ever think to reserve a cabin on this ship, think twice and don't do it.

We booked 3 cabins half a year in advance and all was confirmed.

(We told them the reason of our stay; Special theme-trip with a group of grown up friends, so no staggparty or something alike)

Only a few weeks prior to arrival they cancelled, stating there had been an accident and all reservations for the coming months were to be cancelled, they were closed.

Because we didn't trust this, we asked others to make reservations.

Guess what, they were all accepted.

Turned out we got cancelled because they could get a bigger reservation.

When we confronted the owner about this, all we got was abuse.

Actually, you are rather lucky....we, and another 4 Australians and 4 Americans had a week of barge boot-camp, courtesy of the bullying owner and his first mate, AKA Captain Mart and Miss Elly who own and operate the beautiful restored old barge built in the 1920s called the MS Miro. It was to be our "floating hotel" for the 7 day Limburg bike & barge experience upon which we embarked in Maastricht, NL. It is kept spotlessly clean and “ship shape” by this duo, who act not only as cooks, cleaners and skippers, but also tour guides and, sergeant-majors! The riot-act is read as you are shown your room, and again when the “briefing” on the first morning occurs, and also when you unwittingly break one of the unknown rules! Information is also deliberately with-held, and life aboard this "hotel boat" is anything but relaxing. I thought it was a cultural thing, and for us laid-back Aussies it can be quite affronting and one has to try not to take it personally. Words get lost in translation, and interactions can seem dogmatic and pedantic. Finding your room “rearranged” daily feels particularly invasive (especially when your underwear is moved to the “right place”) as does having your toiletries bag shifted. But it’s the non-verbal “grumpiness” that is difficult to ignore. It was like Fawlty Towers on steroids, and it really was so bad that it became funny. However, coming from the hospitality industry, we know how challenging it can be to have to deal with people day in- day out, but one needs to always show patience and generosity, and perhaps these two have been in the game for far too long. That said, the other aspects of the tour are exemplary….excellent breakfasts, amazing 8-gear electric bikes and comfortable rooms with ensuite facilities – all kept incredibly clean. But if want want a memorable (for the right reasons) holiday - avoid the MV Miro's bike & barge holidays at all costs!

Hmm, interesting, the website says this couple used to be the owners of sailing school Nautilus. As a teen, I have been on a sailing camp there. I do remember the rules were pretty strict. They told us things like that we were not allowed to 'vogelen' . Which is normally the main attraction of a sailing camp for teenagers.

We learned the hard way on this one too.

Mart is downright anal, and more like a grumpy spoiled child than anyone involved in the hospitality industry. He threw temper tantrums and "punished" his guests for lateness (to his schedule) and daring to ask questions about the alternatives to biking up the side of the canal.

On our trip he was obsessed with getting to Maastricht, and keeping to schedule that he wouldn't disclose. In the end we arrived at the destination nearly 24 hours early where the bikes were prompted locked up. The trouble was that we were 5 kms from Maastricht (easy ride), and the transport to town as provided by Mart - at 3 times the going rate!

The rudeness and disrespect shown to their customers by Mart and Elly was beyond belief.

The comfort of the boat and the acceptableness of the meals in no way compensated for the disgraceful way this trip was executed.

We made a wonderfull trip with the Miro - Capt Mart and Miss Elly

Fine first class Food , new E- bikes and nice bike tours

a First class service and Capt Mart is a very nice person.
