RM smith Summer pursuit series

The R M Smith Hot Pursuit series is a nine race series held over summer. As the name suggests, it is a pursuit series which means that there are staggered starts with the later (and faster) yachts trying to catch the earlier starters. It is white sail, non spinnaker series and held on Sunday afternoons so a great way to spend time on the water.

twilight series wednesday and thursday evenings

Twilight racing is run on a Wednesday and Thursday evening from November through to March.

Wednesday racing (Frank Robinson Trophy Series) is jointly hosted  with the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria (RYCV) and incorporates two series (pre and post Christmas). It's a very popular with something for everyone with 3 mixed divisions and a 'one design' division for Diamonds and S80s.

Thursday evening (Raine and Horne Thursday Twilight Series) offers a more relaxed pursuit race, hosted by Hobsons Bay Yacht Club. From 2021 a Thursday evening Female Helm series was instigated.

Twilight racing is a great way to break up the working week and enjoy daylight savings hours amongst the company of other sailors. Dinner (whilst we de-brief) is available for purchase on both evenings with a BBQ on  Wednesdays and catering on Thursday evening.

ALISTER EDWARDS MEMORIAL BRASS MONKEY SERIES

Named by a former Commodore of the Club, the Brass Monkey Series is held in winter - hence the name!

The series attracts yachts from HBYC, RYCV and RMYS with Pursuit, One Design and Fleet racing available and is the largest winter race fleet on Port Phillip.

The series has been running since 1975, initially as a pursuit series. Division A (Spinnaker) and Division B (Non spinnaker) in a short course format.

In 2014 a Long course was also introduced together with Class courses for the S80’s and Diamonds making for 5 divisions. In 2015 the short course Div A and Div B were combined with a 4 minute penalty being added at the start for those that nominated to race with a spinnaker.

To date two trophies have been associated with the series. The original (shown on the left) from 1975-1985-86, and its successor- 1987 to current.

henry press trophy

Captain Henry Press (1844-1920), Port Phillip Pilot, successful yachtsman, first Commodore of the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club in 1888 and noted marine painter with many paintings in public and private collections around Australia.  He is mentioned in the book 'Jolly Dogs Are We' the history of yachting in Victoria. and was the brother of Edwin Ernest Press (22 Oct 1850 -18 March 1920), master mariner and second Commodore of the Hobson's Bay Yacht Club.

In 2013, celebrating the 125th anniversary of Hobson’s Bay Yacht Club, the Press family descendants of the founding presented a silver rose bowl in perpetuity to commemorate the annual Port Phillip Pilot’s event.

"We wish the Hobson's Bay Yacht Club continued success as a leading Victorian yacht and sailing establishment and hope this trophy will be strongly supported for many years to come."

This trophy is now annually presented to the winning HBYC boat sailing the 'short course' of the Port Phillip Sea Pilots race.

Lady Skipper Races, inc the shirley Freeman memorial

The Lady Skippers' race has been a long standing race on the HBYC calendar established in 1900.

In recognitian of all our pioneering ladies who "flew the flag" for women in sailing.

In recent years the HBYC Lady Skippers Race has became a part of the Port Phillip Women's Championship Series (PPWCS) , a series for female sailors on Port Phillip that combines races run by different clubs into one annual championship trophy.

Shirley Freeman was our first Female member and boat owner, sadly Shirley passed away in December 2014.  In 2015, HBYC announced they would honor her by renaming the HBYC Lady Skippers Race the Shirley Freeman Memorial Trophy . The race will now have two Trophies; Shirley Freeman Memorial Trophy (1st PHS boat) and the Lady Skippers Race Trophy (1st HBYC PHS Boat).

Division 2, the  Alice Varady Memorial Trophy is a non-spinnaker race aimed to encourage those Lady Skippers to sail in a race with a less competitive format in recognition of Alice Varady a much loved and long standing Club Manager.

Setting sail into history

In 1951, the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club at Williamstown burned down, along with 45 yachts, 14 dinghies and all paper records in the clubhouse.

Now, the club is seeking people’s stories and memorabilia to create a mural displaying some of its 129-year history.

Commodore Tony Dawson said the club, fondly known as “Hobbos”, had experienced many tragedies and triumphs.

“In 1925, a yacht at opening day capsized and three people passed away, including Mrs Ellen Dennis who was a past mayoress of Williamstown,” he said.

“In 1899, the yacht  Queenie sank and her seven crew drowned.”

In 1900, as other clubs were only opening their doors to women once a year, the Hobbos began a Ladies Skippers Race.

“Our first female senior member and keelboat owner was Dr Shirley Freeman, in 1974,” Mr Dawson said.

“This was a first for Victoria.”

A breakaway group of members formed the Williamstown Sailing Club in 1906.

A yacht from the club,  Thistle , was the first to win Australia’s oldest ocean race from Melbourne to Launceston, which started in 1907 – 45 years before the Sydney to Hobart.

Mr Dawson said the club now had more than 650 members aged from one to 89 years old.

“Many families can proudly boast generations of involvement,” he said.

“The yacht  Ericka was sailed for generations by the Erickson family, including John Erickson [the current yardmaster], his sister Margaret Erickson, his father Les Erickson [slipmaster for many years], and before that, his grandfather Charles Currie.”
