Baltic Yachts Yachts

Baltic Yachts made a reputation building high-tech, semi-custom sailing yachts, but in recent years, it has launched a fleet of custom superyachts by noted naval architects and designers.

Baltic Yachts History

In 1973, five young yacht builders defected from the well-known Finnish shipyard Nautor’s Swan and formed their own company, Baltic Yachts, in the Bosund region of western Finland. Their goal was to become a niche builder of high-quality, high-tech sailing yachts for performance-oriented racing and cruising sailors. To staff their shipyard, they drew from local talent in the region; a shipbuilding centre since the 16th century. The founders’ goal was to build sailing yachts that were “faster, stronger and lighter” than the competition utilising exotic construction materials including carbon fibre and high-tech yacht-building method.

After launching the Baltic 46 and 33 production sailing yacht series, Baltic Yachts delivered its first custom yacht in 1975. Two years later, the shipyard was acquired by Finnish shipbuilder Hollming Ltd., enabling it to expand its marketing efforts worldwide. In 1991, ownership of Baltic Yachts passed back into the hands of key staff members. Today, the principal shareholder is Hans Georg Näder a German industrialist, passionate sailor and serial yacht owner. The shipyard offers semi-custom and custom sailing yachts up to 60+ metres in length

Notable Baltic Superyachts

In 2011, Baltic Yachts launched its largest superyacht to date, the 66.7-metre (including bowsprit) Hetairos . Featuring high-tech carbon construction, Hetairos was co-designed by Dykstra Naval Architects and Reichel Pugh Yacht Design .

Yacht designer German Frers designed the light and lithe, 32.64-metre sloop Inukshuk , which Baltic Yachts delivered in 2013. Inukshuk has a telescoping keel that lowers from 3.35 metres to 4.85 metres and an exceptional power-to-weight ratio. The yacht received two ShowBoats Design Awards and Sailing Yacht of the Year from the World Superyacht Awards in 2014.

The 108-foot Javier Jaudenes design WinWin swept the awards tables in 2015 grabbing a pair of prizes each from judges of the ShowBoats Design Awards and World Superyacht Awards, as well as top yacht in the 24- 40m category of the International Superyacht Awards. The following year, 115 foot Nikata from the boards of Judel-Vrolijk and Nauta Yachts captured four ShowBoats Design Awards, a Judges Special Award for Design and Performance at the World Superyacht Awards and Best Sailing Yacht in the 24-40m category from the International Superyacht society

In 2016 Baltic delivered the high performance 130 foot My Song designed by Reichel Pugh and Nauta Yachts to owner Pier Luigi Loro Piano. The yacht, in addition to being a podium finisher at many regattas, received 2017 prizes from the World Superyacht Awards, the ShowBoats Design Awards (2) and the International Superyacht Society. The yacht was involved in an accident while being transported in 2020 and declared a total loss.

Baltic’s 54 metre Pink Gin VI is the world’s largest carbon fibre sloop. Built for the yard’s principal owner, the 245-ton, silver sloop features a 71-ton, two-stage lifting keel, a 67.9m carbon fibre Rondal mast and two fold-out terraces. Naval architecture is by Judel-Vrolijk & Co and interior design and styling by Design Unlimited . Pink Gin VI took the WSA title of Sailing Yacht of the Year in 2018.

The 43.3m Canova , a Farr Yacht Design project that features a sliding horizontal foil from Dynamic Stability System, was launched in the summer of 2019. Canova won the World Superyacht Awards sailing yacht of the year title in 2020 and Best Naval Architecture prize from the Design & Innovation Awards judges. In addition to the largest-ever application of the DSS foil, the yacht also features diesel-electric propulsion and a hydro-generator system, all intended to make her greener, quieter, more comfortable and easy to maintain.

Also launched in 2019 was the 34.14 metre Liara designed by Malcolm McKeon and Adam Lay for cruising and occasional regatta sailing. Liara took a Boat International Design & Innovation Awards for both Exterior Styling and Interior Design in 2020

EVERY WAVE TOGETHER

31 march 2022.

Celebrating half a century of excellence

It’s 50 years since five young men set out to prove they could build lighter, stiffer, faster yachts

Next year, half a century on from establishing the original shipyard at Bosund, we will be celebrating our birthday and the achievements of the entire Baltic Family who have worked so hard to establish Baltic Yachts as the world leading exponent of advanced composite yacht building we see today.

Fifty years ago, we introduced new standards of excellence, engineering and design when we launched our first production yacht, the Baltic 46, in 1973 and quickly followed it with a series of models which were well received by clients and critics alike. The most popular was the Baltic 39 which dramatically sold out at the 1977 Hamburg Boat Show and went on to sell 74 units.

Fifty-one Baltic 37s were sold and as the company survived oil crises and world recessions its growing reputation for quality attracted clients who wanted larger custom yachts. By the turn of the century superyachting was getting into its stride and in 2002 the company launched Baltic 147 Visione, the first Baltic over 100ft and a showcase for the innovation and advanced design which are still hallmarks of Baltic Yachts today.

baltic yachts bosund

With famous names like Pink Gin, Canova, Hetairos, Nilaya, WinWin, Nikata and My Song among the growing list of awardwinning super-sailing yachts launched by Baltic Yachts, we have become the go-to yard for advanced composite construction and innovation. Electric propulsion and hydrogeneration, retractable propulsion systems, hydrofoil technology and flyby-wire steering are just a few of the successful innovations Baltic Yachts has pioneered.

To celebrate our 50th anniversary we are planning a series of events throughout 2023 involving the local community and the whole Baltic Family. The highlight will be a Baltic Yachts Open Day at our headquarters in Finland during the summer of 2023 at which we hope the first yacht ever built by us, the Baltic 46 Queen Anne, will be present as she returns to the yard for a refit.

She will be in Jakobstad alongside our latest superyacht to launch from our soon to be expanded yacht building facility. We will also be involving our important Service and Refit facility in Palma in the celebrations.

Celebrations will culminate in the Baltic Yachts Rendezvous from 14-17 September, 2023 which will return to Porto Rotondo, Sardinia, Italy, for the third time. There are plans for three days of sailing, parties and good food for the Baltic Family in a spectacular Sardinian setting.

baltic yachts bosund

The Baltic Yachts Rendezvous will be open to all yachts built by Baltic, from the many production models designed last century, to the growing number of award-winning superyachts launched since 2000. It is hoped that up to 30 yachts will participate.

Yacht Club Porto Rotondo, established in 1985, is located in a magnificent setting not far from Olbia. The club is well versed in sporting and social events and, as in previous Rendezvous regattas, will be responsible for running the racing.

As a tribute to Baltic Yachts’ owner Professor Hans Georg Näder, whose involvement and support of the company marks its 10th anniversary in 2023, the event will be held under his patronage.

It is fantastic to see Baltic Yachts reach this outstanding milestone in such good shape and we very much look forward to seeing owners, their families and friends at our Rendezvous next year, said Baltic Yachts EVP Henry Hawkins.

Save the date September 14-17, 2023 and watch out for more information later this year.

One of the few luxury brands in Finland, Baltic Yachts, celebrates 50 years in business in 2023. The story of this sailing yacht builder began with five young men in Bosund, Ostrobothnia, who were determined to build lighter, stiffer and faster yachts. Early on, the company started tailor-making its boats to the requirements of demanding clients, and today, it is the world leader in custom-made, advanced composite yachts.

“Our boats are fantastic pieces of craftmanship and high technology. With their design, quality and comfort, these lightweight performance yachts are equally at home cruising the oceans as they are on the race course, Head of Marketing Elisabet Holm describes.

Today, Baltic Yachts caters to some of the wealthiest in the world, but the values of the company remain stable:

“Here at Baltic Yachts, an Ostrobothnian company, we are trustworthy, humble and proud of our work. We are innovative and solution-oriented and we work together, everyone is treated as equal.”

Baltic Yachts walks the talk also in its sustainability work. Together with its conscious customers and personnel, the company is pushing for greener solutions in sailing, such as hydrogeneration, hybrid propulsion, battery technology and sustainable materials. The yacht builder also maintains and repairs its customers’ yachts, extending their lifecycles by decades.

Today, Baltic Yachts builds custom-made luxury yachts of up to 200 feet, but the company’s story began by challenging the prevailing trends in boat building in the 1970’s.

One part of Baltic Yachts 50 th anniversary celebration is, in fact, a refit of the first ever Baltic, a 46-footer from 1973. Queen Anne will be the centrepiece of the company’s anniversary celebrations, which will culminate in a regatta, arranged for boat owners in September 2023 in Porto Rotondo, Sardinia.

“I feel honoured to be part of the celebrations of this pioneering company and the people who helped build it. In our region, we have a long heritage of boat building, and for centuries, we have sailed the world in search of adventure and new innovations. This entrepreneurial spirit can still be felt here today.”

Cutting Edge Carbon: Baltic Yachts of Finland

  • May 22nd, 2018

There are “loud” brands on the yachting market which are making a big fuzz about their products (and they do good so because marketing is a natural part of our economic system) and there are quiet brands. Very quiet brands actually seem to do what they are doing in a very diffident way. Baltic Yachts of Finland is a fine example of such a brand: You almost hear nothing about them. Well, that might be the case because yachts made by Baltic don´t really need any marketing at all –  in short: Baltic Yachts are legend and second to none.

baltic yachts bosund

Baltic Yachts is making their fine boats in the Finnish City of Jakobstad, a place where boatbuilding has a long standing tradition: A medieval document mentions the Jakobstad boatbuilders first in the year 1529 officially. Baltic Yachts has been founded back in 1973 and has since then specialized in custom boatbuilding on the highest level one can imagine. “Lighter, stiffer, together” is their claim and their yachts – entirely made of carbon fibre – are regularly at the top in superyacht regattas . I´ve spoke to Marcus Jungell, Sales Director of Baltic Yachts, because there is a new boat coming up. One that I find particularly interesting.

“Maintaining a competitive edge.”

Lars Reisberg | NO FRILLS SAILING.com: “ Marcus, please introduce yourself, your position at Baltic and when, why and how you came to work for one of the most exclusive yacht brands.”

Marculs Jungell | Baltic Yachts: “I have been a passionate sailor since early childhood when I joined the Sea Scout movement at the age of seven. I always admired the big and stunning sailing yachts they were building in this area of the world and I have always been interested in the local handcraft and skills that exist in this part of Finland. I joined Baltic Yachts in 2017 and I am currently Sales Director. Before joining Baltic Yachts I have worked more than 10 years in the yachting industry.”

NFS.com: “What is the principle concept of Baltic Yachts? What are the brand´s core values and where is the evidence of these in your yachts?”

Marcus Jungell: “Baltic Yachts was founded in the early Seventies to create boats that incorporate the very latest thinking in yacht design and new technology. In short, we deliver technically advanced, high quality, performance yachts, which are faster, stiffer and lighter. In most cases we use advanced carbon composites to achieve this. Each custom-built yacht combines these values to produce a unique design turning the client’s dream into reality.”

baltic yachts bosund

NFS.com: ”What makes Baltic Yachts so special compared to other high-quality brands like Nautor´s Swan ? Why is a yacht built by Baltic meant to be ahead and in front of others out on the water?”

Marcus Jungell: “Well, I think that is because in each and every project, in each individual yacht we make we always and no matter what stick to our values. We strongly believe Baltic Yachts is unmatched in its planning and execution of modern yacht building. We use our own engineers and designers employing the latest methods to produce the finest yachts. Every element is checked down to the last detail – multiple times. We also work closely with outside experts when necessary to help us reaching the best solutions. Very few companies can replicate this formula. We have great respect for our friends and neighbours at Nautor´s – they actually help us maintain a competitive edge.”

“Every boat we do is big in it´s own way.”

NFS.com: ”There is an exciting new boat in the making, actually a “small” one compared to Baltic Yacht´s usual sizes. How is work on the Baltic 67 PC progressing?”

Marcus Jungell: ”First, let me point out that there are no “small” Baltic yachts: As every single ship built by us represents a big yacht for her respective owner! Talking of the new 67 I can say that we have developed the Baltic 67 Performance Cruiser for two reasons. One, to react to the market conditions and the sustained popularity of long distance, blue water cruising in larger yachts and two, to capitalise on our long history of building high quality production yachts by introducing new clients to the Baltic Yachts brand with its unique values in custom and semi-custom building.”

baltic yachts bosund

NFS.com: ”What can you tell me about the Baltic 67 in terms of positioning within the range of boats your yard is producing, and which kind of owners are your trying to attract with this yacht?”

Marcus Jungell: ”We developed the Baltic 67 Performance Cruiser using the same expertise we employ in the custom yacht segment to provide clients with a yacht providing a great sailing experience, easy family sailing and fast, safe passage-making. By offering a shorter build time at an attractive price we are confident we will appeal to clients looking for a performance edge in this exciting market segment.”

“The Baltic 67 PC will offer unmatched performance for blue water cruising.”

NFS.com: ”The Baltic 67 PC – like other boats in your range – has been designed by German naval architects at Judel/Vrolijk & Co in Bremerhaven. Why did your yard choose this studio as principal naval architects? What makes Judel/Vrolijk special in your eyes and better than other well-known architects ?”

Marcus Jungell: ”We have enjoyed a long and successful relationship with Judel/Vrolijk which has designed some excellent semi-custom yachts for Baltic in the past. We are currently working with several other well-known, equally capable naval architects such as Farr Yacht Design, Bill Dixon, Malcolm McKeon or Reichel/Pugh and we will always consider working with other designers.”

baltic yachts bosund

NFS.com: ”How did you develop the brief for Judel/Vrolijk when you started work on the Baltic 67? What will be the key features of this new yacht in terms of sailing ability, range, comfort and so on?”

Marcus Jungell: “The key was to create a fast, comfortable, easy-to-handle, performance blue-water family cruising yacht capable of performing in moderate to light conditions, particularly downwind. Clients don’t want to motor sail around the world! The design team has deep experience coming up with hull shapes, calculating weight distribution and fine-tuning rig, keel and rudder combinations to achieve this. In addition, it was important to provide sufficient internal volume and to be able to offer clients optional interior configurations. Judel/Vrolijk has met these challenges with bravery.”

“Cutting Edge Carbon Fibre Technologies.”

NFS.com: “Baltic Yachts is well known for utilizing carbon fibre and advanced composites. Can you explain the advantages over GRP and aluminium ? Why did your yard choose carbon fibre as its preferred yacht building material?”

Marcus Jungell: ”Using carbon fibre make us reach our goal of creating faster, stiffer and lighter high performance yachts. Carbon and the many advanced composites we use are lighter, stronger, stiffer and more maintenance friendly than other materials. In fact, our company has gained unmatched expertise in manufacturing hulls, decks and many other components using those fibres. We have 45 years of experience working with different kinds of composite materials and construction techniques. For example, the use of advanced composites often involves applying higher temperatures to complete the chemical reactions required …”

baltic yachts bosund

NFS.com: “… that´s baking of the hulls?”

Marcus Jungell: ”If you say so, yes.”

“67 Feet is as small as one can build semi-custom yachts.”

NFS.com: “The new Baltic 67 will be unveiled at the upcoming Cannes Yachting Festival and will thus be the smallest of your range: How has the market changed over the past years from your perspective? I noticed a trend towards bigger boats in the large production companies – like “60 is the new 40” – how does the Baltic 67 fit to this trend?”

Marcus Jungell: “The Cannes Boat Show is aimed directly at this size of yacht. You see, each boat we build reflects the owner’s dream and we find the +65 feet-segment very attractive for many of the reasons given in my previous answers. 67 feet is getting closer to the lower end of what you might call “superyachting” and of course this is also significant for us as a yacht builder. We believe 67 feet is currently as small as one can build using a semi-custom platform that leverages our experience and ability in building custom yachts.”

NFS.com: “Marcus, what are the future plans for Baltic Yachts and yachting in a greater sense? What’s worth watching in terms of technological development in future yachts?”

baltic yachts bosund

Marcus Jungell: “Our ambition is to continue to remain the world’s leading boat builder for advanced high-performance yachts. We constantly innovate to improve the product and recent examples include utilising a DSS foil for increased sailing performance and comfort, electrical and retracting propulsion systems, improved steering and safer sail handling devices. We are always open to new challenges and ready to go the extra mile – I would recommend that you watch this space!”

And this I will for sure! Thanks Marcus for this teaser-like insight into Baltic Yachts. I will try to be present at the presentation of the all-new Baltic 67 PC at the upcoming Cannes Yachting Festival to which I am so much looking forward to.

Baltic Yachts expands shipyard

Work has begun at the jakobstad facility, which baltic hopes to be fully operational by 2024….

Image for article Baltic Yachts expands shipyard

The 7702m², three-story building is being erected alongside the company’s existing waterfront yacht construction facility in Jakobstad, Finland. Once completed, it will roughly double the size of the shipyard.

The relocation of many key departments including Baltic’s CNC operation, joinery, pre-mounting, surface treatment and lamination will bring them alongside the yacht construction and assembly halls. The move will bring Baltic Yachts’ 205-strong workforce under one roof, eliminating the 25km journey between Jakobstad and Bosund.

baltic yachts bosund

Baltic Yachts’ head of production, Tommy Björklund, said that the new building, the foundations and some of the structure of which are well advanced, could be completed and handed over by the end of 2023 and will be fully operational in 2024.

According to Baltic Yachts’, sustainability is key to its design, employing eco-friendly heating and insulation systems including ‘district’ heating from the nearby Alholmens Kraft power station, the largest biomass-fuelled power station of its type in the world, using wood-based biofuels from the local timber and pulp industry.

baltic yachts bosund

The new building will also have a large array of solar panels, featuring a 100 per cent recyclable bitumen roof covering, manufactured using processes with a 25 per cent reduction in emissions, and 90 per cent recycled steel beams carrying the first and second floors.

Baltic Yachts CEO Anders Kurtén concludes: “This exciting development will improve efficiency by streamlining our yacht building process, bring the Baltic Family together and be a leading example of an eco-friendly industrial unit. To see this coming to fruition during our 50th anniversary year is a great bonus!”

Zemi is also the third Baltic to be equipped with an electric propulsion system. Twin 129 kW Cummins generators provide grunt to a large bank of lithium-ion batteries that power an electric Danfoss motor. Baltic says the e-motor is quieter, cleaner, and smoother than traditional internal combustion mills. In fact, Zemi can cruise in “silent mode” sans emissions for long periods, according to the brand.

In addition, the yacht is equipped with twin rudders and a telescopic lifting keel with a 27-ton bulb that can reduce the draught from 20 feet to 13. It also has several headsail options that are suitable to different weather conditions.

Spearheaded by Andreas Martin-Löf, the interior features walnut and limestone veneers, sleek, modern furnishings, and cleverly integrated lighting. The main cockpit can be enjoyed in all conditions, with a fold-down spray hood and full-length removable bimini protecting guests from the elements. (Alternatively, the space can be left open for lounging in the sun.) Below deck lies a lounge, galley, and cabin for overnight journeys.

Another distinctive element of Zemi is McKeon trademark, wrap-over teak decking that runs from the bow right to the edge of the transom. The transom is expandable, too, meaning that the water is even easier to access from the swim platform. Also at the stern is a large garage that can hold a Williams tender.

Baltic Yachts is a world-leading yacht builder that's built on a strong heritage of design and engineering excellence. The company was founded in 1973 by a team of experienced yachtsmen and craftsmen who sought to create a range of high-performance, custom-made yachts that blended innovative technology with traditional craftsmanship. Since its inception, the Finland-based company has consistently pushed the boundaries of yacht design and construction, establishing itself as a market leader in the luxury yacht sector.

The boat manufacturer started operations in the village of Bosund on the west coast of Finland. The early years were focused on catering to the local market, but Baltic Yachts quickly gained international recognition, with its sailboats being praised for their advanced design, excellent performance, and superior build quality. Significant milestones in the company's history include launching the cutting-edge Baltic 141 Canova in 2019, which showcased the manufacturer's technological prowess with its innovative DSS foil system.

Today, Baltic Yachts continues its tradition of excellence at its state-of-the-art shipyard in Jakobstad, Finland. The shipyard is renowned for its advanced facilities and skilled workforce, excelling in carbon fibre technology to deliver some of the world's most advanced yachts. Shipyard news: Baltic Yachts centralises production

Once Baltic has completed a yacht in Bosund, it has to be transported 21 kilometres through the Finnish coniferous forest by heavy goods vehicle. In the past, the 167-tonne, 44-metre-long carbon-slick "Path" took two and a half hours to reach the shipyard's own quay. In future, the Finns would like to save themselves this time-consuming and labour-intensive procedure and, with the inauguration of the new building, give up the area inland where it all began in 1973.

In the countryside: Baltics' founding headquarters in Bosund will soon be closed, here "Path" rolls away

The 100 by 35 metre building will be more than twice the size of the existing hall in the north of Jakobstad and is being built directly behind it. A structural connection will allow staff and materials to move easily between the two sites. The ground floor of the mostly two-storey, partly three-storey production hall will be filled by the CNC department and separate storage rooms for Corecell or Nomex cores and wood as well as composite raw materials such as prepregs, which have to be kept frozen.

The construction progress of the new 7,700 square metre hall

Sustainable production facility

The new building is supplied with district heating and electricity, benefits from large solar panels and has a fully recyclable bitumen roof, the production of which requires 25 per cent fewer emissions than conventional coverings. Steel beams, 90 per cent of which are made from recycled materials, support the first and second levels. As the hall is also designed to be practically airtight, it is heated highly efficiently in winter and cooled in summer. Baltic aims to further reduce electricity consumption by using a lighting system with proximity sensors.

By the end of 2023/beginning of 2024, all 205 employees will be building Baltic Yachts in one place. Like the existing facility, the new building will be owned by Baltic Boat Yard Oy, a separate property company owned by the City of Jakobstad and Baltic Yachts. Baltic CEO Anders Kurtén said:

This exciting development will improve efficiency by streamlining our yacht building process, bring the Baltic family together and be a leading example of an environmentally friendly industrial facility. That this is being realised in our 50th anniversary year is a great bonus!"

The majority stake in Baltic Yachts is held by a German, Professor Hans-Georg Näder. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the medical technology group Ottobock and owner of the Baltic 67 "Pink Gin Verde" . Its almost 54 metre long "Pink Gin VI" is for sale for 29.5 million euros. Sale .
