"Joy," Michael Jordan's $80 million yacht, is one of the GOAT's most prized possessions.

Michael Jordan's $80 Million Yacht Is a Luxury Boat Fit for the GOAT

Let's face it: The average joe, or even most above average joes for that matter, isn't going out and buying 200-foot super yachts. Only a select few of the most successful people in this world can afford such a luxury. Take the greatest player in NBA History, Michael Jordan , for example.

There's pretty much no denying it: Michael Jordan is the GOAT. Not only was he an NBA legend who won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls, but the five-time MVP also turned his Jordan brand into a super-successful business, making billions of dollars for Nike and opening the door for other athletes to do the same, like LeBron James. As of today, the billionaire owner of the Charlotte Hornets' net worth puts him on the Forbes list year after year.

Now, Jordan is no stranger to boating. A while back, he bought a massive sport fishing Viking Yacht named Catch 23 . It rocked the Air Jordan 3 sneaker elephant print color scheme, and he commonly used it to compete in fishing tournaments. However, one of his more recent purchase puts his old fishing boat to shame. I mean, it is an $80 million luxury yacht after all.

Below, we'll check out what the North Carolina's native pride and Joy (that's the boat's name, by the way) has to offer.

Michael Jordan's Yacht a.k.a. Joy

Coming in at a massive 230 feet, Joy can be spotted miles and miles away. With eight different full-sized cabins onboard, the yacht can house family, friends, or anyone else worthy of staying in the Master Suite with no problem at all. Inside, you'll also find a full bar with a beautiful dining room area and a 270-degree ocean view. Of course, Jordan has also hired some of the world's finest chefs and bartenders as crew members, to serve himself and the guests while out on the water.

Along with an amazing view, the rear deck is fitted with a jacuzzi and a surrounding lounge area for hanging out or tanning. Jordan isn't the kind of person that likes to just sit around though, so it makes sense that there's also a full gym at his disposal to get the blood pumping. Those five-star meals need to get burned off somehow. Additionally, it wouldn't truly be a yacht owned by basketball player Michael Jordan without a full-sized basketball court. He may not play professionally anymore, but that doesn't mean he can't teach his guests a few lessons on the court from time to time.

When it comes down to it, Jordan is a businessman. Because of that, there's also a room that's mainly dedicated to meetings with important clients. The room is fitted with top of the line audio/visual equipment, and a satellite to give a presentation that is nearly impossible to decline. What better way to pitch your ideas than from this luxurious meeting room?

To put things in perspective, this yacht costs around $840,000 each week in order to man the ship and to keep the vessel in seaworthy condition. Not exactly a small price to pay on top of the $80 million price tag, but for the top-of-the-line amenities, it seems to be worth every penny to Jordan. He truly is living the life, pulling up to the beach club on a Caribbean island, ready to take play some 1-on-1 with anyone willing to take on the GOAT.

The Incredible Features Of Michael Jordan's $80 Million Superyacht

Basketball superstar Michael Jordan's love of the sea is well-documented, so it's no surprise that he is the owner of an $80 million superyacht named Joy. This 230-foot luxury vessel is modern, spacious, and comes with a full-length basketball court which is an extra touch befitting of a basketball legend like Jordan. This high-end yacht has not been his only maritime purchase in past years. As an avid sports fisherman who has competed in various sports fishing tournaments, he also owns an $8 million fishing yacht dubbed Catch 23 (via CBS ).

Joy was built by the Dutch ship construction company Feadship, which also was responsible for building a superyacht for the late Steve Jobs (via AutoEvolution ). It is powered by twin 1,850-horsepower engines and has an average cruising speed of 12 knots and a maximum speed of 16 knots. The former king of basketball was last seen cruising on Joy in 2019 while on a sailing trip to St. Barts with friends (via The U.S. Sun ).

Joy's interior is sleek and modern

This award-winning luxury boat oozes elegance from all corners. Photos published online show that its design emphasizes natural light and uses glass paneling and large windows all over the ship to achieve this. As a result, guests can enjoy the sublime ocean view from nearly every room on the yacht.

This luxury yacht is enormous and consists of five decks that are connected by a glass elevator and a timber spiral staircase. There are seven cabins on board, including the master's suite featuring a 270-degree view and a private terrace. There is also a VIP stateroom, four double cabins, and one twin cabin to accommodate guests. In total, it accommodates up to 12 guests and 19 crew members.

For someone as enterprising as Michael Jordan ( Forbes has estimated his net worth to be $1.7 billion), this vessel has everything a billionaire businessman needs to kick back and relax. It comes with its own bar and a jacuzzi on its main deck. There is also a fully-equipped gym and a full-length basketball court whenever he is ready to take on anyone who wants to challenge him for a pick-up ball game.

Michael Jordan's super yacht, Michael Jordan, Michael Jordan yacht

There are a ton of perks when you're the richest athlete to ever step foot on Earth. Michael Jordan sold his basketball team for billions, a $29 million mansion that he doesn't mind hasn't been sold for almost a decade, one of the rarest cars in the world
 The list goes on.

But one of the most expensive single purchases Jordan ever made with his money to date was on an $80 million yacht named ‘Joy'. What's more, that's not even the only yacht Jordan owns. He also has a $21 million yacht called ‘Mr. Terrible', which is pretty fitting when you compare the two yachts he has to his name.

First acquired by Jordan in 2016, the vessel spans 230 feet in length and outlines at almost 10 feet. Its maximum speed is 16 knots while its cruising speed is 12 knots. He was first spotted cruising with the yacht on his way to the Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy with some of his closest friends. Lastly, the superstructure is built of Aluminum, the decks are made of Teak wood, and the entire ship is insulated with glass aluminum to accommodate the changing weather and was specially developed by Bannenberg & Rowell Designs.

Amenities inside Michael Jordan's yacht

Michael Jordan named this yacht Joy for a reason. Anything that can bring him or anyone joy can be found inside his yacht. For starters, it comes in five decks, eight cabins, an indoor jacuzzi, a movie theater, a spa, and a stunning dining room. One of the biggest perks of this yacht is the owner's pavilion. This is where you'll find the yacht's penthouse suite, personal office, and a terrace to check out the best views of the ocean.

If you plan to stay active while on the yacht, it has you covered too. It also comes with a gym and an indoor basketball court. After all, what more can you expect from the yacht of one of the greatest basketball players in the world?

When it comes to maintenance, Joy definitely doesn't come cheap. There's a crew of around 19 people onboard the ship 24/7 and costs $800,000 a week to maintain as per Marca . Luckily, this yacht isn't exclusive to Jordan or his friends and family. In fact, anyone can rent Joy for a week. All you'll need is $840,000!

Michael Jordan reels in a 442-pound blue marlin on his $8M yacht 'Catch 23' in fishing tournament

The yacht has already reeled in an impressive fish.

Michael Jordan took his 80-foot, $8 million convertible Viking sportfishing yacht to Morehead City, North Carolina to take part in the Big Rock Fishing Tournament. This is the NBA legend's first time competing in the tournament, which is a non-profit event to raise money for local charities.

The boat is named "Catch 23," a nod to his iconic number.

Of course, No. 23 did not miss a detail on the boat, which has his Jordan Brand elephant print along the side and a panther on the stern.

The graphics match his plane, because why have a yacht and a plane if you aren't going to make them coordinate, right?

Looks like Michael Jordan will be participating in this week’s @bigrockfishing Tournament. #Catch23 pic.twitter.com/Mg650UeNPn — Talk of the Town (@1037WTIB) June 5, 2020

On Monday, the second day of the tournament, local station WITN reported that the boat brought in a 442.3-pound marlin.

According to National Geographic , marlins average anywhere from 200 to 400 pounds, but can weigh over 1,985 pounds. If M.J. wants to reel in one of those, to quote Jaws, he's gonna need a bigger boat.

Jordan is used to being crowned champion, but right now a boat called 'The Predator' is in the lead with a 494-pound blue marlin.

Up for grabs is The Fabulous Fisherman prize and $552,500, which will go to the first boat to bring in a big blue that weighs over 500 pounds.

With a net worth of over $2 billion, Jordan doesn't exactly need the money, but I'm sure he'd love to add another title to his resume.

The fishing boat has many features including a hydraulic bow thruster, a centralized seawater system, dual freshwater pumps, Veem S-class propellers and manual back-up, according to  HaulOverinlet.com . It sleeps 10 guests and has a top speed of 48 mph.

This is not Jordan's only boat, his other vessel is an $80 million, 230-foot yacht that reportedly costs $840,000 a week to operate.

Jordan does a lot more with his money than purchase impressive boats, however. Just last week he committed to donating $100 million over ten years to help organizations that "ensure racial equality, social justice and greater access to education."

A Closer Look at Michael Jordan’s $8 Million Yacht

April 14, 2022 by Martin Banks • Print Story

Michael Jordan, the owner of the Charlotte Hornets and possibly the greatest basketball player of all-time, dropped the bag on an impressive yacht in 2021. Named Catch 23, it cost a whopping $8 million and currently sits in the harbor of Jupiter, Florida.

The name has a triple meaning. It invokes the famous book and old saying "Catch 22" while integrating the boat's main function — fishing — and Jordan's iconic basketball number, 23.

This yacht is just the latest example of Jordan's competitive nature and propensity to drop serious dough on his various hobbies. Aside from his accomplishments on the basketball court, Jordan is an avid gambler, golfer, and accomplished fisherman, participating in deep-sea fishing tournaments in the Atlantic and Caribbean.

Let's take a closer look at Catch 23's features and see what all the fuss is about.

Aboard Catch 23

Catch 23 is a Viking 80 made by Viking Yachts, one of the most prestigious yacht manufacturers in the world. It's a 2018 model with some balanced measurements:

- 84 feet long - 103 tons - Standard MTU naval engine - Tops out at 40 knots (about 48 mph) - Range of over 500 nautical miles - 2,600-gallon fuel capacity - Fits eight guests and two crew members

The boat's hull has an elephant wrap with a blue, white, and grey color scheme. These colors invoke the Jordan 3 basketball shoe and his college days at the University of North Carolina, where he rocked Tar Heel blue as a promising young NBA prospect.

The deck is designed for functionality, with a standard layout and plenty of seats and storage to handle a deep-sea fishing expedition. As you will see, Catch 23 is more of a hobby vessel than a refuge for relaxation. Still, the interior has enough luxurious features to make up for it.

The interior has a pleasing design, with white leather seating and smooth hardwood tables. There are couches for lounging, booths, and bar seats for eating, and an impressive kitchen with white marble countertops.

The hangout areas and sleeping arrangements comfortably fit 10 people (although the master bedroom takes up most of the space). The bathroom has a sizable shower, making hygiene a much easier task than on other ships.

Not that Jordan needs to watch his spending — he has a net worth of over $2 billion — but he did overpay for Catch 23. The vessel notably cost $2 million above the Viking 80's original value for two reasons: the custom design and the overall spike in boat prices. Boat prices have risen by almost 10% in recent years, enticing many people to sell their boats just to break even. We don't think Jordan will have this problem, but other boat owners should be aware of this trend.

Catch 23's Performance

Catch 23 isn't a fancy yacht by upper-class standards. You can certainly find more extravagant yachts in the water, including another owned by Jordan. His other yacht is a 230-footer named Joy that cost $80 million, but he can't exercise his competitive spirit on such a leisurely behemoth. This time, he opted for a sleek multipurpose vessel, just like his style of play on the court.

Catch 23 has a custom frame built for both leisure and competitive fishing. It has plenty of space for a small crew and all the capabilities to handle deep-sea fishing. Jordan himself caught a 442-pound marlin as captain of the ship at the 2020 Big Rock Fishing Tournament in North Carolina. He also caught a 25-pound mahi-mahi (dolphinfish) at the same tournament in 2021. Those catches earned him eighth and fourth place, respectively.

Notorious for his obsessive winner's mentality, Jordan made a point to win a fishing event with his prized vessel. He accomplished that goal by taking first place at the 2021 Buccaneer sail-fishing tournament in North Palm Beach, Florida. Although Jordan wasn't the captain, he reeled in two of the seven sailfish Catch 23 caught during the two-day event.

When he's not participating in world-class fishing tournaments, you might spot Jordan lounging on Catch 23 at its designated spot in the Jupiter harbor, casting lines and enjoying the boat's luxurious features.

Find Your Catch 23

While you probably don't have $8 million lying around to spend on a high-class yacht, you might have the funds to invest in a reliable compact fishing vessel. Boating is a challenging but fulfilling hobby, with energetic and relaxing features that everyone can enjoy. If you've always wanted a boat, start your search now and you might find your own Catch 23.

A Firsthand Look at Michael Jordan’s $80 Million Yacht

 alt=

Michael Jordan is one of the most respected men on the planet.

From being the basketball G.O.A.T to an iconic businessman, Jordan has cultivated a life most dream of. After wrapping up a legendary NBA career, MJ elevated his brand into a billion-dollar business; officially becoming the first billionaire athlete in 2015, and now currently ranking in the top 5 of wealthiest celebrities according to Forbes.

His Airness owes it to himself to indulge in the fruits of his labor; so, he decided to kick off 2019 by purchasing an $80 million yacht and cruise to the islands of St. Barths. Living the life of Jordan includes kicking your feet up and sipping fresh margaritas, puffing on premium Cuban cigars, and sailing into the sunset with the company of beautiful women and best friends. It costs roughly $840,000 a week to man the ship and maintain his lavish lifestyle out at sea.

A few photos of the yacht were leaked following a tweet from MJs body guard Dwyane Bacon of Air Jordan swaying to “Wobble Baby” at the Hornets annual holiday party.

This yacht is a fully loaded luxurious sanctuary. The specs, features, and amenities on this boat out-class most apartment and condominium buildings.

Here’s a firsthand look at the G.O.A.T. SS and all its conveniences

Michael Jordan’s Catch 23 Sportfish Yacht

Ian Fortey

Michael Jordan, aside from being a legend on the basketball court, is also an avid sport fisherman. To that end, he owns the Catch 23 sport fishing yacht, a Viking 80 model, which he’s been known to take out frequently over the years to relax on the water. Let’s take a closer look at the yacht and some of the features Jordan gets to enjoy while he’s on board.

How Big is Catch 23?

yacht jordan michael

Although it’s rumored that Jordan also owns the massive 230 foot yacht known as Joy (though it’s just a rumor) his fishing boat Catch 23 is much smaller, though still incredibly large by most people’s standards. This fishing yacht clocks in at 84 feet. That means it’s the same size as Shaq’s yacht , though they are different models. There’s room on board for 8 guests in total and it can be managed by a crew of two.

How Fast is the Motor Yacht Catch 23?

yacht jordan michael

The Catch 23 is a powerhouse on the water for a boat of its size. It uses a pair of tier 3 MTU Series 2000 V16 M96L engines that offer up a top speed of 40 knots and a cruising speed of 30 knots. The vessel has a range of about 500 nautical miles. It’s usually docked in Jupiter, Florida but Jordan has taken it all around the US for sport fishing tournaments in the years since he’s owned it, usually up and down the east coast.

How Much Did Catch 23 Boat Cost?

Word is that Air Jordan dropped $8 million on Catch 23 back in 2018. With an estimated net worth of around $1.7 billion it’s certainly nothing he can’t afford. Which is good because the annual cost of running Catch 23 in terms of fuel, crew and general upkeep has been pegged at around $800,000.

Based on some accounts, Jordan actually significantly overpaid for his yacht but there are some reasons for that. First, the custom wrap around the boat set him back a good deal as it’s a big job. The other factor was just an issue with boat availability and the market at the time of his purchase. Boat prices were higher than usual at the time. Because of that, some sources have estimated he may have paid upwards of $2 million more than someone else might have for a nearly identical boat at another time. That said, for a 2023 model the $8 million price tag wouldn’t be unusual at all.

What’s it Like on Board Yacht Catch 23?

Because Catch 23 is a Viking 80 you can actually get on board and take tours of identical models since Jordan isn’t likely to let you come take a look at his personal yacht. His own yacht does have custom touches and, most notably, the exterior wrap has been custom designed for him and matches his private jet. Both are designed after the Air Jordan 3 sneakers.

Jordan has actually entered sport fishing tournaments with Catch 23 so it’s definitely set up for fishing and not just for show. Interestingly, the yacht has entered fishing tournaments in the past with Jordan’s crew but not Jordan himself. For instance, at the 2022 MidAtlantic Tournament, the Catch 23 crew pulled in a 73 lb White Marlin but Jordan was not on board at the time. The marlin ended up being a first place finisher. In 2020, Jordan was there himself when they pulled in a 442.3 lb Blue Marlin, though it wasn’t big enough for a win.

yacht jordan michael

At the Big Rock Tournament in 2021, Jordan hauled in a 25-lb dolphinfish or Mahi Mahi on his own.

Despite being a vessel meant for function more so than luxury relaxation, Jordan still made sure his boat was comfortable. The interior decor features white leather and marble as well as hardwood surfaces. Guests can relax across a series of couches, bar stools and even booth seating when they hit the salon and galley on the main deck.

The enclosed flybridge is massive compared to what you’d expect to find on a flybridge with seating for plenty of guests so no one needs to be separated or even downstairs rather than up by the helm if there’s a worry about the party being split up. Of course, if Jordan is keeping a crew on deck rather than operating the vessel himself then this is less of a concern.

yacht jordan michael

The massive master stateroom is full beam and features a king size bed. The VIP staterooms also feature king size beds while the crew quarters have a double berth and en suite bathrooms.

Because Viking Yachts makes these boats custom for the owners it’s hard to say exactly what features Jordan might have included in his own interior, but similar models have even had full laundry rooms on board.

Out on the cockpit below the mezzanine there’s room to mount a fighting chair though it doesn’t look like Jordan makes use of this feature. There’s a lighted livewell with a window and tons of storage all around.  The vessel also features hydraulic bow thruster and dual freshwater pumps as well as Veem S class propellers among many other top of the line technical features.

yacht jordan michael

The bow of Catch 23 is quite large and on many Viking 80s you’ll see a tender boat mounted here as it has room for a 17-foot dinghy or even two jet skis. It looks like Jordan hasn’t taken advantage of this and just keeps the bow clean and clear at all times.

The Bottom Line

Catch 23 is Michael Jordan’s custom designed Viking 80 sportfish yacht. He purchased the yacht in 2018 for $8 million and since that time has entered it in numerous sport fishing tournaments. The yacht itself has room for 10 and features a large master suit plus several VIP staterooms and crew quarters.

Because this is a sportfish vessel it’s not as decked out with luxury features as many superyachts might be. However, it does feature a lot of space and amenities to make any fishing trip a top of the line one.

Everything You Want to Know about Michael Jordan's Yacht

For a lot of people out there, Michael Jordan was the biggest sports star of the 1990s. This is because he led the Chicago Bulls to 3 championship wins from 1991 to 1993, retired from the NBA to play some minor league baseball, and then led the Chicago Bulls to another 3 championships from 1996 to 1998. Summed up, it is no wonder that a lot of people see him as the greatest basketball player of all time, which is something that comes with a huge amount of respect, as shown by nicknames such as Air Jordan.

With that said, it is interesting to note that Jordan seems to have a fair amount of business skill as well. Certainly, he came out of the NBA as a millionaire , seeing as how he made a total of $90 million over the course of his NBA career. However, that served as a springboard and nothing more than that, as shown by what Jordan has managed to make based on the reputation that he built up. For example, Jordan was famous enough that he wound up playing the lead character in the 1996 movie called Space Jam , which might have met with a mixed response from the critics but was nonetheless such a huge success that it became the single most successful basketball movie ever. Furthermore, it is important to note that Jordan still makes tens of millions on Nike royalties on an annual basis because his shoes are still selling to a huge number of fans out there. Finally, Jordan actually became a billionaire in relatively recent times because he purchased the Charlotte Bobcats for $175 million, which is relevant because said franchise has seen a huge upswing to value to something along the lines of $750 million.

As a result, it is safe to say that Jordan has a lot of money to spend in various lavish ways. For example, he has a private jet that has been painted Carolina blue. Furthermore, he has spent more than $12 million building a home in Florida, which was in addition to real estate properties elsewhere. Finally, Jordan owns a yacht called Mr. Terrible, which is well, the exact opposite of what its name sounds like.

What Is There to Know About Michael Jordan's Yacht?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Mr. Terrible is one of the most luxurious yachts that can be found out there on the sea. In total, it measures 154 feet in length, which is enough by most ways of reckoning to make it count as a mega yacht. For those who are curious, mega yachts are essentially private yachts measuring 24 meters or more, which is big enough that they actually need a professional crew on-board. Something that more or less restricts them to a very small group of potential clients, which in turn, means that each example is very much one of a kind with nothing else that is exactly like it.

Of course, mega-yachts being mega-yachts, this means that there is more to it than just its length. For example, one of the reasons for its construction is its use on fishing trips, as shown by the facilities that can be found on-board. Moreover, it is interesting to note that Mr. Terrible actually comes with a fairly powerful underwater camera, meaning that Jordan and his guests can use it to gaze down at what is happening in the waters beneath them.

With that said, Mr. Terrible boasts other ways to support rest and relaxation as well. For example, there is a bar where people can sip their favorite beverages. Furthermore, there is an area for outdoor dining as well as an indoor dining room with an actual chandelier. On top of this, Mr. Terrible boasts a design that has drawn inspiration from Art Deco as well as tropical themes, as shown by the fact that it has incorporated tropical wood into its walls as well as a staircase that has incorporated bubinga, which is a particular kind of hardwood with a rich color that projects an almost palpable presence.

Summed up, Jordan's Mr. Terrible is a remarkable demonstration of the yacht-builder's art because he can afford to pay for the best. Something that stands as a visible reminder of how Jordan has managed to turn his basketball reputation into a net worth that makes him the third wealthiest black person from the United States.

TAKE a look aboard the GOAT's boat as Michael Jordan leads a lush lifestyle with modes of transportation like this.

The NBA icon owns a jaw-dropping super yacht named Joy which is valued at a gaudy €70m.

Michael Jordan owns the luxurious ÂŁ60m super yacht Joy

He bought the luxurious vessel in 2019, that sits alongside his ÂŁ6million fishing boat Catch 23.

Immediately, he sailed to the Caribbean island of St Barts with the pals to enjoy it.

On board, it has amenities, including a deck jacuzzi, gym, and a stunning dining room.

Better still, Joy also boasts a full basketball court for Jordan to show guests he's still got it.

Jordan became the first billionaire athlete in 2015, and still earns around ÂŁ120million-per-year from Nike in endorsements, so a lavish purchase was always on the horizon.

Four years later he splashed around ÂŁ60million on this yacht, which comes with all the trimmings over five decks.

Measuring 230 feet long, it boasts eight cabins fit for a king with each accessible by a lift.

Each has been decorated with ocean mosaics, like skylights and bathrooms with granite finishes. And they are equipped with their own rain showers.

It offers a 270 degree ocean view, and is glass insulated to keep out the cold overnight and on chilly days.

Up to 12 guests and a crew of 19 can be on board at one time.

The running costs for the yacht are estimated around ÂŁ600,000 per-week.

But, aside from the lavish bedrooms, there's plenty of on offer to do onboard Joy.

There is a full bar and dining room, which Jordan will pay the world's best chefs and drink mixologists to wine and dine him when he's travelling the ocean.

And there is a jacuzzi, which can be found on deck and enjoyed as you overlook the St Thomas and Caribbean islands' coasts.

Despite retiring from the NBA in 2003, Jordan still likes to keep himself fit, in lieu of the odd cigar.

That's why he has a state-of-the-art gym to workout in on Joy.

However, the most incredible thing we've ever seen on a boat is his full-scale basketball court.

Joy boasts a deck jacuzzi that overlooks the sea

You can be sure he reminds his guests who the GOAT is on the court.

Michael Jordan’s Yacht: Catch 23

Michael Jordan’s Yacht: Catch 23

In 2019, Michael Jordan purchased Catch 23 , an 80-foot Viking sportfish luxury fishing boat featuring some amazing details. Marine Diesel Specialists are in awe over this beauty, so we endeavored to find out some of the most interesting facts about Michael Jordan’s yacht and all it has to offer. Marine Diesel Specialists are the best in the industry offering OEM parts and MAN engine overhauls. Here are ten interesting facts about Catch 23, from its powerful MTU engines to its matching elephant print design with Jordan’s private jet:

1. The Catch 23 yacht is powered by MTU engines.

Our Fort Lauderdale marine diesel mechanics are in shock at the speeds that Micheal Jordan’s fishing boat can reach. Catch 23 has a max speed of about 40 knots with a range of more than 500 nm. Depending on the load as well as other environmental factors, the Catch 23 fishing boat can effortlessly cruise at 30 knots.

2. The Catch 23 yacht was built and designed by Viking Yachts in 2018.

Viking Yachts is a premier yacht manufacturer in Riviera Beach, FL. They specialize in convertible yachts as well as open and motor yachts. Jordan’s fishing boat is a convertible Viking 80EB sport fisher motor yacht. Viking Yachts designed both the interior, exterior, and engineering behind this impressive fishing boat.

3. Michael Jordan uses Catch 23 for fishing tournaments.

Michael Jordan is definitely not a newbie when it comes to fishing. He frequently uses the Catch 23 fishing boat in a variety of tournaments. In June of 2020, Jordan participated in the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament and reeled in a 442.3-pound marlin.

4. Michael Jordan’s Viking Yacht can accommodate 10 people.

Catch 23 can comfortably seat 8-10 guests and a 2-person crew. 1

5. Catch 23 is worth $8 million.

That’s right, Michael Jordan’s yacht is worth $8 million, which is pocket change for someone with a $1.6 billion net worth according to Forbes. 2 He is famously considered the richest former professional athlete in the world. After winning 6 titles with the Chicago Bulls, he deserves this boat.

6. Catch 23 was named after Jordan himself.

For fishing and boat enthusiasts, naming your yacht is serious business. Jordan used a clever pun to name his vessel, playing off the common phrase “catch-22,” tying it into his off-the-court fishing hobby with “catch,” and incorporating his jersey number, 23.

7. Michael Jordan’s fishing yacht matches his plane.

It wouldn’t be a luxury fishing boat if there wasn’t a matching plane to complete the set. Both feature the famous elephant print from the Air Jordan 3 sneakers, released in 1988, as well as Jordan’s signature panther on the stern to match his private jet.

8. The boat is docked in Jupiter, Florida.

You can find Jordan’s 80-foot fishing boat docked in Jupiter, Florida most of the time. Catch 23 can often be spotted around North Carolina where Michael Jordan enjoys participating in non-profit fishing tournaments and other national fishing competitions.

9. Catch 23 includes several rooms and amenities.

Michael Jordan’s Catch 23 yacht has a virtual conference area, 2 dining spaces, and a J lounge where Jordan and his guests can hang out between catches. The sleeping quarters include the main suite with a king-sized bed, 2 staterooms with queen-sized beds, and 2 additional staterooms with bunk-style beds, or berths. Each of the 5 staterooms also has its own shower stalls and there’s even a washer and dryer in the companionway.

Additionally, the Catch 23 yacht also features a centralized seawater system, dual freshwater pumps, Veem S-class propellers as well as a manual backup. 3

10. Catch 23 isn’t Jordan’s only boat.

The famous basketball player also owns another boat that is worth roughly $80 million. The 230-ft mega yacht includes a full-sized basketball court as well as 8 cabins, a full gym, and a jacuzzi.

Check out Michael Jordan’s Massive Sportfish Catch 23

Earlier this year Michael Jordan’s yacht, a beautiful Viking sportfish, participated in the Ocean City, Maryland White Marlin Open .

Touted as the world’s largest billfish tournament, the White Marlin Open draws thousands of anglers and spectators every summer. More than $5 million in prize money was awarded in 2018. At the August 2019 event Jordan entered his Viking, named Catch 23, and he was entry number 123.

The custom 80 foot Viking is decked out in a wrap matching the famous elephant print from his Air Jordan 3 sneakers. His plane is decked out in the same print.

Jordan himself was spotted on the yacht enjoying cigars and some great weather and fishing! The Viking 80 set up to win, the 216 square-foot cockpit is equipped for tournament fishing with a transom door,  freezer, tackle, and general stowage space, live well capacity, fish wells, an ice chest and a chill box for drinks.

Update: June 9, 2020 MJ was in Morehead City, NC for the Big Rock Tournament and his Viking hauled in a 442.3 lb Blue Marlin! It won’t win the tournament, but it was great to see the billionaire owner of one of these boats actually there at the weigh in!

Powered with tier 3 MTU Series 2000 V16 M96L engines each developing 2,635 mhp with Blue Vision controls and display monitors, our testing calculations indicate a top speed in excess of 40 knots with an effortless high 30 knot cruise, depending upon load, sea conditions and ambient environmental factors. These engines are the same as used aboard the 92 Convertible. It is interesting to note that MTU looked to Viking to be the first manufacturer to use this new propulsion system and Viking’s success with its 92 series verified the engines comprise a winning combination for speed, efficiency, range, acceleration and quietness, which will replicate aboard the new 80 Convertible.

Entered through an electric sliding door on the cockpit mezzanine deck, the salon is a forest of satin walnut joinery and leather appointments, created by the artful direction from the team of the William Bales and Company. The 21 ft. 5 in. beam and the use of the vertical space is immediately apparent creating a free flowing movement with the ambiance of a great room. A day head is immediately to starboard. To port, a J lounge and coffee table is a virtual conference area, opposite walnut cabinetry housing a 60 in. flat screen television on an electric lift. Forward to starboard a raised built-in dinette serves a dual purpose with rod stowage for 80 pound outfits. The fore and aft style of the galley maximizes useful space with under counter refrigeration beneath a second dining area with bar stools, while the outboard counter accommodates a double sink and electric cooktop. Forward of the galley, a versatile walk-in pantry is as spacious as a stateroom and can be outfitted as such.

Built for the ultra rich

Inviting accommodations include five generously appointed staterooms, including a full beam master suite with a king size walk-around bed. The port and forward staterooms have walk-around queen beds. The two starboard staterooms have upper and lower berths, and are surprisingly spacious thanks to the use of sliding entrance doors which maximize interior space. Every stateroom has a large head and fiberglass shower stall. A washer and dryer are located in the companionway.

On the flying bridge, a center console command station gives the operator a great view underway and while fishing. Three pedestal helm seats are standard, and additional seating is available on port and starboard lounges, each with rod stowage below. A U-shape lounge and table forward of the console seats more guests, and is notably below the forward sightlines of the helmsman thanks to the raised standing platform behind the console. A freezer is forward between a refrigerated box and a sink with a freshwater outlet. While air conditioning is available on the open flying bridge, a climate controlled enclosed bridge with access from the salon and the mezzanine deck also is available. Additionally, the enclosed bridge convertible also can be ordered with an open Sky Bridge.

A lengthy list of standard equipment includes a hydraulic bow thruster, a centralize seawater system, dual freshwater pumps, Veem S-class propellers, two 29 kW Onan generators, two Glendinning Cablemasters, Charles PM 100 shore power cord combiner and isolation transformer, and an Octoplex touch screen electrical distribution panel with monitors in the salon and on the flying bridge with manual back-up.

The Dirt: Michael Jordan buys new estate in Jupiter, and Kyma restaurant to open in West Palm Beach

yacht jordan michael

Welcome to  The Dirt ! I’m real estate reporter  Kimberly Miller  with the latest developments in the sizzling market.

In this week's real estate news, some wealthy folks are terribly vexed because they can't park their 164-foot yacht at their dock in North Palm Beach, and some normal folk are troubled that proposed affordable housing in Jupiter really isn't that affordable.

Ahhhh, Palm Beach County. From Ruinart champagne to the champagne of beers , we've got it all.

There's also breaking restaurant news and The Palm Beach Post covers restaurants better than Velveeta cheese on nachos. Or hollandaise on eggs benny, or flambéed orange sauce on crepes Suzette or, well, you get the picture. We write a lot about restaurants.

Senior business reporter Alexandra Clough was the first to report on a famous Greek restaurant coming to West Palm Beach, and there's also a story about why Planet Smoothie and Moe's Southwest Grill co-founder Martin Sprock may be abandoning plans for an eatery on West Palm Beach's acclaimed Antique Row.

A 164-foot yacht named Honey gets the cold shoulder in North Palm Beach

The very best part of this story is the revelation that we — little ol' Palm Beach County — have become a "mini-Monaco" for the wealthy mariners of the world who can handle a little chop in their 164-foot mega yachts. (I can't resist a "Wolf of Wall Street" clip) But once they get the yachts here here, they face a serious parking dilemma .

A North Palm Beach homeowner just wants to dock his yacht named Honey at his home. Trouble is, he has to "occupy" the home and since he's got several other homes in Palm Beach County and this one isn't his primary residence the definition of "occupy" seems to be the stumbling point.

It's a real Palm Beach dilemma. Too many homes and a mega yacht. Sigh.

Penthouse at The Bristol in West Palm Beach sells for $28 million

The ultra-luxury tower that some folks originally poo-pooed because it was in West Palm Beach instead of Palm Beach just had another record sale for a single-condominium at a recorded $27.99 million. The six-bedroom penthouse is one half of the 23rd floor of the swanky condo that sparkles like a beacon of affluence on the shores of the beleaguered Lake Worth Lagoon .

The seller was a company affiliated with a trust in the name of the late Boston developer Gerald S. Fineberg. The buyer's side is a mystery hidden in a trust that's sealed inside the lost treasure of Oak Island .

Michael Jordan buys another multi-million dollar home in the ultra-exclusive Bear's Club

Just a guess, but I'm thinking Michael Jordan can buy a home just about any-dang-where he pleases. For the first time last year, Jordan made the Forbes list of the country's 400 richest people , so to choose another property in the Bear's Club in Jupiter must say something about its exclusivity and high-end amenities.

His new 9,100-square-foot home has nothing on his custom-built estate nearby, but it did cost a recorded $16.5 million, which ain't too shabby.

New York's acclaimed Kyma Greek restaurant coming to West Palm Beach

If a renowned New York restaurant is going to open its first eatery outside of New York, where else is it going to go than Wall Street South? So, of course, Kyma, which offers traditional Greek taverna food, will be coming to downtown West Palm Beach by next year with ground-floor space AND a lively rooftop area.

I do so love a piece of baklava, but at $14-a-pop, it's a little above my budget. There's a nice happy-hour menu with lots of $10 "bites", which seems more doable for the non Wall Street Southerners .

Live lightly.

5 things to know about North Palm Beach mega-yacht owner, billionaire Michael Bozzuto

Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is fighting for the right to moor his 164-foot mega-yacht behind a waterfront house he owns at 932 Shore Dr. in North Palm Beach.

But the Village of North Palm Beach has told Bozzuto he doesn't have this right.

It's the latest example of how big money landing in Florida is running up against Old Florida residents who want their communities to stay low-key.

After years of disputes over the yacht, Bozzuto recently filed a lawsuit against the municipality, asking a judge to agree that he has the right to the use of his house and his dock.

Who is Michael Bozzuto, and why is he suing the Village of North Palm Beach?

Here are five things to know:

1. Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is a longtime North Palm Beach resident

Bozzuto is the billionaire owner of a privately held, family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut called Bozzuto's Inc. The company is a distributor of food and household products to retailers in New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Bozzuto's was founded by Michael's late father, Adam.

Even though Bozzuto's Inc. is based in Connecticut, Bozzuto has lived in the Village of North Palm Beach, population 13,000, for 20 years.

2. Besides owning a yacht, what are Michael Bozzuto's hobbies?

In addition to being a businessman, Bozzuto is an investor and philanthropist. He is a longtime supporter of the Special Olympics.

He is also an under-the-radar resident who likes to collect houses and yachts, said his lawyer, former Florida Bar president Gregory Coleman.

Bozzuto bought the motor yacht, Honey, about 10 years ago for an undisclosed sum. The Westport mega-yacht was built in 2007 and is the largest of several yachts Bozzuto owns.

Bozzuto also owns four houses in the Village of North Palm Beach. This includes the house at 932 Shore Dr., where he wants to dock Honey. In 2014, Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house, which was built in 1961, according to Palm Beach County property records.

The property is on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Honey.

Bozzuto's residence is in another part of North Palm Beach, on Harbour Isles Court.

3. Michael Bozzuto's net worth isn't known but billionaire owns property outside of North Palm Beach, too

Bozzuto made waves recently when in January he paid $31.1 million for a waterfront house in nearby Palm Beach Shores.

The Singer Island house with two docks stretches into the Intracoastal Waterway just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet. The three-lot parcel on 1.5 acres has about 200 feet of waterfront.

The property was bought from an owner whose family had owned it for decades. It's unclear if Bozzuto will make any changes to the property.

In a brief interview in February, Bozzuto said: “It’s a house, and it will probably be a house."

Twin City Mall: North Palm clears way for redevelopment, taller buildings at landmark site

4. Why can't Bozzuto park his yacht behind his North Palm Beach house?

The Village of North Palm Beach rules say that a private dock or pier can only be used by the occupant of the house. But the village doesn't define the word "occupant."

Bozzuto's lawsuit said while the village has discussed whether to define an occupant as a resident, it never has done so.

Hundreds of other property owners dock a boat behind their North Palm Beach house but do not live there year-round.

Therefore Bozzuto said he's being singled out because neighbors just don't like his boat's big size. This selective enforcement is wrong, his lawsuit said.

Show me the money? Here it is: West Palm and Palm Beach rank in top 5 as cities with fastest growth in millionaires

5. What does North Palm Beach think about the lawsuit?

Unfortunately, this is a mystery until the village responds to Bozzuto's lawsuit in public court records.

The village's longtime lawyer, Lenard Rubin, who knows the municipality's history with boats and houses, did not respond to requests for comment. Neither did the village's manager, Chuck Huff.

Here's why LeBron James, not Michael Jordan, is the GOAT

Beyond the statistics, it's a matter of ideology – one that pits activism and solidarity vs. nostalgia and delusion, by david masciotra.

The effects and limits of time have no meaning to the vampire. In Bram Stoker’s classic novel, Dracula describes how “only a few days” make up a century.

If he were not such a charitable man, it would seem appropriate to investigate whether LeBron James is a vampire. At 39 years old, in his 21st NBA season, he shows few signs of mortality. This season he averaged 25.7 points, 8.3 assists and 7.3 rebounds per game after playing 71 games in the 2024 season.

The negation of LeBron James is not related to sports, rather it is a cultural stain.

Decades for LeBron, like centuries for Dracula, pass in mere days. It doesn’t feel like too long ago that LeBron James was 18 years old, straight out of high school in his rookie season, and dominating on the court against players 10 to 15 years older. As Edward R. Ward, the author of “Life in the Valley of Death: Some Aspects of Race in Men’s Basketball in the Missouri Valley Conference, 1959-60 – 1963-64,” recently said when assessing James’ unprecedented run of uninterrupted achievement: “He’s been the best the longest.”

Over his 21 years in the NBA, he has become the all-time scoring leader, breaking Kareem Abdul Jabbar ’s record, which NBA analysts long considered unbreakable, has entered the Top 5 in all time assists, is in the Top 30 for all-time rebounds, and has led three different teams to four championship titles, appearing in 10 finals throughout his career. At 6 foot 9, 250 pounds, he is one of the strongest players to hit the hardwood, but also, astonishingly, one of the fastest. In a game-saving block during Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals – one of the most famous and celebrated moments of his basketball life – he ran 20.1 miles per hour to prevent a member of the opposing team from making a layup.

James is statistically superior to any other player to ever wear an NBA uniform, with unprecedented achievements, and yet most of the sports commentariat, along with millions of fans on social media, are hostile to the notion that he is the greatest of all time (GOAT).

The most prevalent position against LeBron James as GOAT is that he’s led his teams to only four titles. Stephen A. Smith, Skip Bayless and other sports pundits trot out this number in the service of the most popular candidate for greatest NBA player of all time: Michael Jordan . According to conventional wisdom, Jordan leading the Chicago Bulls to six finals, and winning all six, closes the case.

Smith, Bayless and the chorus of Jordan worshipers act as if Jordan played only six seasons as a professional. Never do they mention the nine seasons that Jordan did not lead his respective teams to making the finals. His last two seasons, with the Washington Wizards, ended without even qualifying for the playoffs, and his teammates despised him so much that they refused to buy him a retirement gift.

The illogic of the Jordan partisans acts as a blacklight, making clear that what actually underlies the negation of LeBron James is not related to sports, rather it is a cultural stain.

Shelby Steele, the preeminent Black conservative intellectual, argues in his book about Barack Obama , "A Bound Man," that for most of American history Black public figures, whether in politics or pop culture, performed one of two roles: bargainer or challenger. Citing Louis Armstrong as an example, Steele defines the bargainer as one who tells white America, “If you allow me to have a career, and amass wealth, I will not remind you of the shame of American racism.” Challengers, such as Miles Davis , proceed according to the presumption that American institutions are racist, and therefore, must meet an obligation to prove that they are acting according to egalitarian principles.

Michael Jordan, at his global peak of popularity in the 1990s, was the ultimate bargainer. No matter how egregious the injustice in the headlines – the acquittal of the police officers who beat Rodney King , the rise of racial profiling against Black commuters, the increasingly inflammatory rhetoric of key Republicans figures, like Newt Gingrich and Pat Buchanan – “Air” Jordan maintained an air of silence, rejecting the tradition of Black athletes, most notably Bill Russell, Muhammad Ali and Hank Aaron , of parlaying their sports stardom into effective activism. He never lent his instantly recognizable name or likeness to campaigns for social justice, and infamously refused to endorse any candidates for political office.

Jordan’s self-serving desire to maintain neutrality calls to mind the Howard Zinn quip, “You can’t be neutral on a moving train.”

In 1990, the Democratic Party in Jordan’s home state of North Carolina had an opportunity to defeat one of the most vicious racists of the U.S. Senate, Jesse Helms . Harvey Gannt, Helms’ opponent, was a local civil rights leader and beloved mayor of Charlotte. If he defeated Helms, he would have become the first African American elected to the U.S. Senate in North Carolina. The Gannt campaign, and even Michael Jordan’s mother, begged Jordan to make a public endorsement, believing that any boost to the candidacy could prove crucial in a close race. Jordan refused, uttering to his disappointed teammates what has now become one of sports’ most notorious expressions of greed and narcissism: “Republicans buy sneakers too.”

Jordan’s self-serving desire to maintain neutrality calls to mind the Howard Zinn quip, “You can’t be neutral on a moving train.” The MVP’s silence offered protection for the delusions of the 1990s, namely that racism was a trauma of the past, and that consumer culture was a ticket to shared prosperity, even a substitute for investment in the public interest.

The only arena that Jordan dominated with equal force as the basketball court was the world of the television commercial.

Throughout the 1990s, it was impossible to avoid Jordan’s charismatic smile alongside product placement. As social critic Michael Eric Dyson wrote in a 1993 essay for “Cultura Studies,” “Jordan eats Wheaties, drives Chevrolet, wears Hanes, drinks Coca-Cola, consumes McDonald’s, guzzles Gatorade, and of course, wears Nikes. He successfully produced, packaged, marketed, and distributed his image and commodified his symbolic worth, transforming cultural capital into cash, influence, prestige, status, and wealth.” Dyson correctly observes that for a period of several years, “Jordan was the quintessential pitchman of American society.”

We need your help to stay independent

By eschewing the sociopolitical advocacy of sports legends like Jim Brown and Kareen Abdul-Jabbar, Jordan followed the map of O.J. Simpson ’s design. Long before Simpson became known as a wifebeater and accused of murder, he became a pioneer at the intersection of athletics and business. He was the first Black athlete to land a gig as corporate spokesperson when he appeared in television ads for Hertz Car Rental. Many additional endorsement opportunities soon followed, and O.J. rose to unprecedented heights by adopting the omerta on any and all issues related to race, politics and inequality.

“Jordan lacks any sense of historical perspective about the struggles that made it possible for him to enjoy his incredible wealth and enormous opportunities,” Michael Eric Dyson concluded. It is unclear whether Jordan lacked perspective or merely feigned ignorance, striking a pose of impartiality that is as easy to sketch as his patented triangular, one-handed dunk – an image that now adorns the Air Jordan basketball shoe.

Just as the Air Jordan still sells out in every shopping center of America, the American public, most especially the captains of corporate culture, has an insatiable appetite for the bargain that trades political passivity for personal glory. The hunger was especially powerful in the 1990s when Americans wanted to believe that racial division, arguments over democracy and questions regarding social justice relics of previous eras. Francis Fukuyama, one of the world’s most influential intellectuals, announced “the end of history” after the fall of the Berlin Wall , and the election of Bill Clinton promised the triumph of “third way” politics that put an end to partisan rancor.

The crass commercialism of “Republicans buy sneakers too” coupled with Jordan’s squeaky-clean image made him the perfect pitchman for a pre-WTO protest, pre-9/11, pre-Trump age of American optimism – the last days of faith that America could escape the clutches of history. Jordan lacked a historical perspective, just as Americans lacked historical interest.

LeBron James signed a multimillion-dollar deal with Nike at the age of 18, partially due to Jordan’s company man counsel, and currently endorses Taco Bell , Pepsi and Louis Vuitton. Even if his corporate connections are similar to his adversary in the GOAT debate, his persona is markedly different.

In his gripping and thoughtful biography, “LeBron,” veteran sports journalist Jeff Benedict chronicles how James ascended to NBA greatness, while also discovering an authentic sense of self, eventually amplifying an individual voice even while under corporate and cultural pressure. It was a transformation that, unlike his instant dominance on the court, took years to transpire.

During the 2006-07 season, one of James’ teammates on the Cleveland Cavaliers wrote a letter for publication in the Cleveland Plain - Dealer condemning the Chinese government for complicity in the genocide of Darfur. Nike has a close relationship with China. Unlike other players on the Cavaliers, LeBron James refused to cosign the letter, claiming that he did not have “enough information” on the subject.

Benedict writes that James was troubled with regret, and not only because the press, and former NBA legends who became social justice advocates, like former Senator and presidential candidate, Bill Bradley, ridiculed James’ cowardly apathy. James himself knew that his inaction was wrong.

Since then, LeBron James has acted as a consistent force for racial equality and Democratic politics. He appeared alongside Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, publicly endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016 and supported Joe Biden in 2020.

In 2014, he organized the Cavaliers to wear “I Can’t Breathe” t-shirts following the death of Eric Garner , and his repeated calls for police reform, have given him close association with Black Lives Matter . Calling participation in the sociopolitical commitment, “a walk of life,” he explained that “when you wake up, and you’re black . . . it shouldn’t be a movement. It should be a lifestyle.”

James is also one of the principal funders of More Than a Vote , a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting voter suppression laws and registering young Black Americans to cast a ballot. He has referred to Donald Trump as a “bum,” and invited the scorn of Fox News’ Anita Bryant-impersonator, Laura Ingraham, who instructed James to “shut up and dribble.” James replied by remarking how her dismissive attitude, and racial double standard – she often celebrates white athletes who take political positions – is exactly why he feels the need to enter political debate.

Meanwhile, James is the founder of the Lebron James Family Foundation, which pays for four years of tuition at the University of Akron, in James’ hometown, for more than 2,000 students. Although recent test scores are discouraging, the elementary school that the foundation started, the I Promise School, specializes in serving at-risk children.

Michael Jordan belongs on the Mount Rushmore of NBA legends, but LeBron James has performed at a higher level for a longer period of time.

Contrary to Jordan’s genuine or pretend historical illiteracy, James articulates an ethos of acknowledgement, gratitude and appreciation of lineage. During the first episode of the podcast that he cohosts with JJ Redick, James asserted the following as one of the three criteria for determining who are the greatest players in any sport: “Knowing the history of the game, knowing the ones who paved the way and knowing the reason why you’re actually having the ability to live out your dream – it doesn’t happen without the ones who came before you. It doesn’t happen without Bill Russell going through what he went through during the Civil Rights Movement. It doesn’t happen without Oscar Robertson going through what he had to deal with during those times. It doesn’t happen without them being pure, who they are and working to allow us to do what we do without care.”

The conflict of ideology between Jordan and James manifests in their divergent of styles of gameplay and leadership. Business and leadership coaches use James as a model of an effective innovator of team-centric success. Because he focuses, first and foremost, on integrating his teammates into each play, he often faces criticism for passing too much. Many of current and former teammates have credited him as a mentor. Michael Jordan, displaying the opposite mentality, told a story during his NBA Hall of Fame induction speech of responding to a coach’s admonishment, “there is no ‘I’ in ‘team,’” by saying, “But there is in ‘win.” It is a challenge to find a teammate of Jordan’s who voluntarily admits to liking him.

As the “quintessential pitchman” without “historical perspective,” Jordan exemplified American individualism. LeBron James, while an individual of profound achievement, demonstrates a commitment to communal solidarity, on and off the court, that helps him sharpen an acuity of societal involvement.

Michael Jordan belongs on the Mount Rushmore of NBA legends, but LeBron James has performed at a higher level for a longer period of time. Every statistical indicator, along with James’ 10 final appearances, confirms that James’ resume of achievement is untouchable, clearly qualifying him as GOAT.

The refusal to fully appreciate James, and the insistence on Jordan as superior, is a choice not of rational calculation, but nostalgia – nostalgia for an America independent of history; an America when the fantasy of political detachment was in full reverie, and an America when individualistic obsession with consumer culture came without consequence.

The reality is that not only is LeBron James a better basketball player than Michael Jordan, but that to “Be Like Mike,” as the Gatorade advertisement slogan of the ‘90s stated, inflicts damage.

Jordan is fond of saying that he is not a “role model.” LeBron James provides a model for citizenship in an America without illusion. While Jordan lives in the air, head in the clouds of the past, James has his feet on the ground, marching into the future.

Plans for Michael Jordan museum in Wilmington scrapped

yacht jordan michael

Plans for a Michael Jordan museum in downtown Wilmington announced last year appear to have rimmed out.

According to a Friday news release from New Hanover County government, "The (Jordan) family has decided not to pursue a Michael Jordan Family Museum at this time."

In December, New Hanover County Manager Chris Coudriet announced that the block of downtown Wilmington slated for a new library and museum could also include an area for a Michael Jordan museum as part of Project Grace. As part of that project, the current downtown library and Cape Fear Museum will be combined in a new building, with the old library torn down and replaced by new development.

A memorandum of understanding was dated Dec. 4 and signed by Coudriet and Jordan's mother, Deloris P. Jordan. The museum as envisioned would have included "important artifacts and objects to tell the family's story."

A planning phase was set to address design and operational details of a potential museum, but it's not clear if that ever got off the ground. Funding was to be included as part of the overall Project Grace planning budget.

According to the release from the county, "The conversations during this due diligence and discovery phase have been collaborative and productive
While this museum is not moving forward, the county looks forward to its continued partnership with the Jordan family to display memorabilia from Michael Jordan’s life and career in the Cape Fear Museum and appreciates their continued support of our community."

MJ and ILM: What does Michael Jordan mean to his hometown? It’s complicated.

Jordan, a Wilmington native, is considered by many the greatest basketball player ever. He's a six-time NBA champion with the Chicago Bulls and one of the world's most famous people. Until last year, he was also the majority owner of the NBA's Charlotte Hornets.

Jordan starred in basketball for Laney High School before going on to win a national championship in 1982 with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

According to the release, "No county funds have been expended on this project to date," and the announcement doesn't "change the existing development agreement with Cape Fear Development," which will build a mix of retail and residential where the current downtown library exists once it's torn down sometime in the next year.

As for Jordan and Wilmington, well, it's complicated. Most residents know Wilmington is Jordan's hometown, but the fact isn't exactly trumpeted locally.

Jordan is in neither the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame nor the Wilmington Walk of Fame.

Jordan has talked openly for years — like in ESPN's 10-part documentary "The Last Dance" — about the racism he experienced in Wilmington growing up during the 1970s.

Still, even as he hasn't always embraced his hometown, Jordan has come back to Wilmington time and again, starting with the Azalea Festival in 1982. When  he returned in 2018 after Hurricane Florence, he handed out Thanksgiving meals at Lowe's Home Improvement   stores and donated $2 million to hurricane recovery efforts.

He's given his time, his money and plenty of Nike Air Jordans to Laney, and in 2021 Jordan donated $10 million to help fund two area medical clinics in  a partnership with Novant Health .

Laney's Michael Jordan Gymnasium was named for him in 1995. The new gym built in 2017 isn't named, but it's part of the high school's Michael Jordan Sports Complex. Near Laney, a sign on Interstate 40 has proclaimed a seven-mile stretch in New Hanover and Pender counties the Michael Jordan Freeway since 1991.

Downtown,  the Cape Fear Museum of History and Science has long had a small, permanent exhibit , "Michael Jordan: Achieving Success" dedicated to Jordan's days in Wilmington. Presumably most of that material, along with perhaps some new items, will move to the Cape Fear Museum's new location when Project Grace is finished.
