When you think of a wireless remote control to steer the boat you immediately think of Yacht Controller. An undisputed leadership that lasts since its introduction on the market, at the dawn of the 2000s. Despite being confronted with a series of imitations, it has never known any crisis. Even now that maneuvering joysticks are more or less anywhere and are more and more evolved, no device allows you to moor spot-on or maneuver as you want, like Yacht Controller. As a statement to its efficiency, there are more than 15 thousand systems installed, working since years without any trouble.

Yacht Controller: three models and a joystick

Over the years, the offer has become increasingly wide , but above all more evolved, both because the needs of precision and reliability grew , and because the competition that focused primarily on price was to be fought with quality and technological evolution. It’s therefore no surprise that this year the “entry-level” Smart model was discontinued, to roll out the two Dual Band and Dual Band Plus versions and the En-Joy model that, with the mini joystick and combined with the manual and automatic functions, promises to solve any issue regarding maneuvering. Those who want to stick to the traditional remote control can also combine it with the JPS Plus Joystick.

Yacht Controller Dual Band and Dual Band Plus

Yacht Controller Dual Band guarantees more safety because it is equipped with two different transmission bands to avoid any interference caused by the presence of nearby devices that do not comply with the law. A button has been added to the transmitter for allowing the receiver to take control of the mooring . Thanks to the special silicone diaphragm levers, guaranteed for over 200 thousand operations , it can simultaneously control the two engines, the bow and stern thruster and the anchor winch . The transmitter is water resistant and floates , the battery change is fast and the AAA batteries are easy to find anywhere.

The main features of Yacht Controller Dual Band are:

• double receiver on two different frequency bands, to ensure perfect operation even in case of external interference or failure of one of the bands;
• multiprocessor structure (a central CPU and a microprocessor for each function) that allows a double control on each function, making unwanted commands impossible in case of failure;
• double relay for each control output that prevents unwanted operation due to faults;
• modular design , easily modifiable in case you want to add new features. In addition, changing boat will not require the purchase of a new Yacht Controller, but simply the replacement of a card if the throttle levers are different;
• LEDs on the front panel of the receiver that indicate the correct functioning of the electronics, the status of the active commands and, in case of malfunction, the type of fault;
• the beeper not only indicates the loss of the connection with the transmitter but also the different operating and alarm statuses.

Yacht Controller Dual Band Plus adds a five-profile acceleration module , which allows to increase the action of the engines if the conditions require it, for example in the presence of strong winds. It can also command two anchors.

Yacht Controller En-Joy

The Yacht Controller En-Joy wireless joystick combines the practicality of the wireless remote control with the one give by the joystick in a single device. In addition to the characteristics of the Dual Band model here you have:

• automatic operation mod e, with motors and steering propellers used simultaneously to facilitate mooring maneuvers;
• manual operation mode , to better manage the mooring maneuver and activate the thrusters both with the engines and separately;
• acceleration management;
• management of up to two winches ;
• the transmitter is water resistant.

Yacht Controller En-Joy features a mini joystick : it is sufficient to position the electronic control levers of the boat in neutral, enable the receiver, switch on the transmitter and activate the “take in charge” via the relative button . From this moment the system is operative and from any point of the boat, with just the touch of a finger, left and right engines and bow and stern thrusterswill be simultaneously activated , allowing to maneuver the boat in any direction, simply, without risks, with precision and in relax. By releasing the pressure on the joystick the system will automatically go into neutral.

Yacht Controller JCS Plus

If, on the other hand, you prefer to keep the joystick on the dashboard , here is Yacht Controller JCS Plus. Easy to install, it does not require complex, invasive and expensive work in the engine room , and it is not necessary to lay wires along the boat. It’s enough, once identified the type of electronics throttle , to have a quick installation near the chosen control station on the flybridge or by the helm station. If the boat is already equipped with a Dual Band Yacht Controller system, it is sufficient to link a connector to the Yacht Controller receiver already on board. Unlike other joysticks on the market, Yacht Controller JCS Plus offers maximum flexibility of use thanks to the automatic and manual modes already described for En-Joy. It is also the only one to be equipped with a c ontrol panel with LCD screen , also visible in the sunlight, which will allow, thanks to a clear and simple silhouette of the boat highlighting the engines and propellers, to understand what exactly is activated in the maneuvers that are being performed.

From the JCS panel you can configure different operating modes, choose the language, the measurement units, display an accurate diagnostics and many other data. With levers featuring digital protocol, Yacht Controller JCS Plus allows you to manage the acceleration with different settings depending on the time and percentage of acceleration required. If the windlass (single or double) is available, the function can be controlled from the JCS panel also reading the chain counter.

Yacht Controller JCS PLUS can be used alone or integrated with the popular and UNIQUE wireless remote control mooring systems, Yacht Controller DUAL BAND and/or Yacht Controller SMART . With a simple movement of the hand, the Joystick JCS allows simultaneous operation of the motors and of the bow and stern thrusters, enabling you to moor and move the boat in any direction simply, without risk and danger, precisely and with total ease.

Yacht Controller JCS PLUS is very easy to install, with no difficult, invasive and costly work in the engine room; moreover, it does not require cables to be installed along the length of the boat but, after identifying the type of electronic throttle control installed on board, it is installed rapidly in proximity of the control station selected, either on the flybridge or in the saloon. Moreover, if the boat is already equipped with a Yacht Controller Smart or a Yacht Controller DUAL BAND system, it can be installed simply by attaching a connector to the receiver already installed aboard. Unlike other joysticks present on the market, Yacht Controller JCS PLUS offers maximum flexibility thanks to its automatic and manual modes. In automatic mode, the motors and the thrusters are used simultaneously to facilitate mooring manoeuvres even for those with less sailing experience. In manual mode, the thrusters can be activated as required, both together with the motors or separately, for better control of the manoeuvre you wish to perform.

Yacht Controller JCS PLUS is also the only one equipped with a control panel with LCD screen, also visible in sunlight, which has a clear and practical design of the boat with indication of motors and thrusters, showing you exactly what is activated in the manoeuvres being performed. The JCS panel can be used to configure the various operating modes, select language, units of measurement, accurate diagnostics and many other features. With throttle controls equipped with digital protocol, it can be used to manage acceleration, with different settings depending on the percentage of acceleration selected and its supply time. If the windlass (single or double) option is present, the weighing/lowering function with chain counter can be controlled from the JCS panel. It can also be integrated with the function SSS (Secure Sail System) developed by MZ Electronic, which allows retrieval at standard speed during weighing of the anchor up to the last 3 metres of chain, subsequently slowing down progressively to retrieve the anchor at minimum speed. This prevents the risk of damage and protects the windlass from harmful jerking that can cause breakage. System will stop anchor when totally weighed.

The three-axis joystick knob is specifically designed to ensure a good grip. The NEMESIS new generation of wireless remote control systems for yachts up to 50’/16m with a choice of three Dual Band Transceiver options. These are joystick (NTJ), levers (NTL) and keys (NTK) to suit your personal preference and style.

V.IPS for IPS Pod Drives is one of the latest advances in yachting innovation manoeuvring technology from Yacht Controller.

Fully compatible with Volvo Penta IPS stern pod drives.

Designed with Automatic and Manual control modes it can integrate any bow or stern thrusters installed.

Thrusters and anchor windlass(s) on the yacht can be controlled independently from the V.IPS Joystick.

This wireless remote from Yacht Controller is ideal for larger yachts or displacement vessels with engine controls with acceleration control or for those owners looking for the maximum control from their wireless remote.

Yacht Controller Dual Band Plus

Yacht owners who favour Joystick control now have all the benefits of a hand held wireless remote.

Like the DUAL BAND PLUS the EN-JOY offers the Manual / Automatic switch to select the preferred operation of the engines and thrusters when using the joystick. Depressing the switch on the joystick and moving it will only select the thrusters according to the joystick position. A very useful function making fine adjustments during manoeuvres without engaging the engines.

When the manoeuvre is to rotate the yacht you have two options. Buttons on the remote can select engines only or engines and thrusters together.

For the Joystick lovers the EN-JOY PLUS is the best of the Yacht Controller wireless technologies applied on a joystick!

As with the DUAL BAND PLUS, V.IPS and the EN-JOY the EN-JOY PLUS is configurable with 1 or 2 anchor winches, Bow and Stern thrusters, Acceleration profiles and Automatic/Manual mode.

The History of Yacht Controller

Yacht Controller, recognised by national and international patents, originated in 1999 when the first prototype was developed. A remote control system that could enable a boat to be berthed without assistance using any combination of engines and thruster control all from a wireless remote handset.

After 4 years of continuous development, Yacht Controller was officially launched at the 2002 Genoa Boat Show and aroused immediate interest. The launch slogan was “everyone’s dream is to move freely from bow to stern without having to stay at the helm.” This dream has already come true for thousands of enthusiastic users all over the world.

In 2004, Yacht Controller won the NMMA Innovation Award for “best technological innovation” at the Miami Boat Show.

Is it easy to use Yacht Controller?

What do the Yacht Controller products do?

Yacht Controller products consisting of a handheld transmitter and a receiver allow you by wireless transmission to remotely control functions of your boat These functions are, but not limited to, the engines reverse and forward, the stern thruster, the bow thruster, the anchor windlass(s), management of engine acceleration, manoeuvre in automatic or manual mode. Allowing you move freely away from your helm station to anywhere aboard your boat.

In addition, among the products distributed by the Yacht Controller, there is JCS Plus, a fixed joystick where with the simple movement of the hand provides simultaneous operation of engines and thrusters to manoeuvre the boat in any direction. How much does a Yacht Controller system cost?

The cost depends on several factors, including the type of engine control head aboard your boat. The number of functions you want to control in addition to the control of the engines and the choice of remote handset. These allow us to provide a cost effective tailored system for you while retaining the advantage of an upgrade path should your needs change in the future.

Is Yacht Controller dual band better than single band?

YES. Yacht Controller always transmit simultaneously on two individual radio frequency bands (DUAL BAND) which are widely spaced in the radio frequency domain. Therefore, if the communication between the transmitter and the receiver is disturbed by a radio-frequency transmission device operating in the immediate vicinity, either legally or illegally, then communication and control continues by the other band. This means reliable communication even when a single band has wideband noise disruption that blankets the entire band.

Where a single band is used in some other manufactured products, there is no reliability that wireless commands from your remote will be actioned by the receiver.

How do the Yacht Controller wireless products work?

Yacht Controller wireless products use a coded digital signal transmitted from the handheld remote to the boat’s onboard receiver. The receiver system is equipped with microprocessors programmed directly in the laboratory, so it is impossible to interfere with other radio controls of thrusters, gangways or windlass controls available on the market, which instead use standard electronic components. Each transmitter has in fact a unique code programmed in the factory and different from all others. The coded signal is checked and verified to promote safety and security before operating the engine, thruster, windlass or other device connected.

Are there any safety features built into the Yacht Controller?

YES. Yacht Controller processes communication and operational diagnostics cyclically to ensure the  correct operation of the system at all times. This means visual indicators of each operation indicate a correct actual response of the command action.

Correct on/off start-up and ‘TakeCommand’ operation to meet regulations and safety.

Operates on two transmission bands continuously, not just frequency hopping around a single band. This means reliable communication even when a frequency band has wideband noise disruption.

Multi Processors design redundancy means just that. Each function operates with 2 CPU’s.If the system is not 100% operational the diagnostics warn of a malfunction.

Can a Yacht Controller be installed on my boat?

What is the use of having a Yacht Controller product on board?

The Yacht Controller products allow you to move your boat in the most varied situations in a simple and safe way by allowing you unrestricted visibility and control away from your helm stations. Having the ability to move on to the bow, stern or side decks allow you to better evaluate the situation.

During mooring they are an essential aid in approaching and moving away from the quay. Also, anchoring and picking up mooring buoys, attending refuelling station with restricted access or space. In shallow waters and in the presence of underwater obstacles you are able to command your boat from exactly the best viewpoint.

Do you have to cut or splice any wires to install Yacht Controller?

NO. Yacht Controller installations integrate with your existing boats electrical control systems to retain the integrity and operation of the boats existing controls.Yacht Controller never cuts wires and is a full Plug and Play integration which does not cut or bypass your manufactures installed electronic system, so it is secure, safe and does not void any warranties.Other manufactures also claim this although you would be wise to actually check as some claims are untrue which can lead to your boats control being unsafe.

What happens if my Yacht Controller does not work?

In this unlikely event, your engines, thrusters and anchor will remain safely in neutral and you will have normal operation of all of your yacht functions through their wired controls. In the absence of communication between the transmitter and receiver the receiver automatically deactivates the outputs and simultaneously activates the acoustic alarm.

What happens if a boat near me is operating a wireless Yacht Controller like mine?

Each transmitter has a unique code programmed at the factory and different from the others, chosen from over 65,000 combinations, therefore it is impossible to interfere with similar or same products. Even in the presence of several Yacht Controller’s’ operating simultaneously on adjacent boats incorrect activation is not possible as the transmitters continuously change the frequency of communication with the receiver.

Can the wireless signal be interfered by other devices?

Yacht Controller transmits simultaneously on two individual radio frequency bands which are widely spaced in the radio frequency domain. Therefore, if the communication between the transmitter and the receiver is disturbed by a radio-frequency transmission device operating in the immediate vicinity either legally or illegally then communication and control continues by the other band. In the extremely unlikely event of simultaneous interference on both bands, the receiver activates the buzzer for short periods, thus signalling the momentary interruption of communication with the transmitter. Due to the security of the communication protocol, it is not possible for the system to accept incorrect commands.

How do I know if the Yacht Controller transmitter is working and communicating with the receiver?

If the remote transmitter loses communication with the receiver, an audible alarm sounds on the receiver. With the NEMESIS remote this also vibrates to signal an occurrence.

Does Yacht Controller have throttle control?

YES, Yacht Controller offers optional engine throttle acceleration on the range of remote transmitters.

How long does it take to install one of the Yacht Controller products on my boat?

An average installation is performed in a day and includes system testing and operation. Installations are undertaken by Yacht Controller UK and regional dealers.

What happens if my boat does not have electronic controls?

It is not possible to install Yacht Controller directly on mechanical control heads. Our advice is to install compatible electronic control heads (we recommend MAREX ECS) in association with the Yacht Controller system of your choice. We can advise and provide a quotation for the complete installation.

Does Yacht Controller work if I only have one engine?

YES. Yacht Controller has been fitted to many boats with a single engine. Yacht Controller has been designed to maximise the use of any boat irrespective of one or two engines or thrusters.

Will Yacht Controller work on both 12 & 24v boats?

YES, Yacht Controller will operate on either voltage.

If I buy another boat can I bring my Yacht Controller System with me?

YES, it is possible. In the case of different electronic control heads or thruster controls the system is modular and can be upgraded or modules purchased to match the new boat configuration. Often owners may sell their boat with the Yacht Controller left installed, as it can add value.

What is the warranty period?

The warranty period is 2 years.

I have a metal boat; can I have Yacht Controller?

YES. Any radio transmission system can be shielded by metal surroundings. For these applications where the receiver may be placed in such a shielded location that an external antenna offered by Yacht Controller is enabled for correct RF communication between the remote and the receiver. Note: Receivers should also not be placed within engine rooms which are typically lined with a metal sound proofing or screening material.

How many functions can the Yacht Controller control?

A typical boat installation may vary between single or twin engines, 1or 2 thrusters and 1 or 2 windlasses and is matched to your boat. Yacht Controller typically controls 5 functions or 6 with the NEMESIS product although they can be expanded to control other functions like passerelles and other utilities aboard. Contact us if you have control ideas and we can advise.

Does the installation require modifications on my boat?

NO. The receiver is normally installed under the selected helm station in a suitable location out of sight. A single on/off switch will be allocated or fitted to the helm/dashboard.

Will Yacht Controller work with my Volvo Penta IPS?

YES. Yacht Controller is compatible with many IPS installations. Volvo also retain restrictions on some software platforms. Contact us for advice on your IPS yacht.

How can I know if the batteries in my transmitter have to be replaced?

Yacht Controller transceiver remotes are fitted with wireless charging. With earlier remotes when the low battery indicator LED flashes, the transmitter batteries must be replaced within two / three hours of operation. It is a good idea to always keep three 1.5 V AAA (LR06) high quality alkaline batteries in the boat or change them at least once a year at a memorable time. Do not install rechargeable cells. Follow the user manual instructions to replace the batteries when required.

How do you charge the handset?

For remote transmitters that are fitted with rechargeable batteries (non-removable) they should be positioned on the wireless charging pad as set out in the user manual.

Does the handset power down when not in use?

YES. The remote transmitter switches off automatically if it is not used for about 4 minutes. During any waiting period while manoeuvring your boat with Yacht Controller just select a thruster or engine briefly to reset the time out period.

Does the Yacht Controller have dynamic positioning?

Where a boats engine and thruster control installation has a dynamic positioning  system (otherwise known as a skyhook) that is correctly installed and operational then this option can be made available with Yacht Controller. One system is Volvo Penta.

What is the range of wireless products?

The radio control range is designed to meet the requirement of the yacht. For the larger or non fiberglass yachts we use a high performance CAN Bus external antenna.

Is the transmitter waterproof?

The transmitter housings have a IP67 water ingress protection rating and they float if dropped in water.

What happens if I do not turn off my wireless Yacht Controller remote when I do not use it?

The remote transmitter switches off automatically if it is not used for about 4 minutes and the receiver will start an acoustic alarm if the Yacht Controller receiver is still on. To deactivate the receiver, press the on/off switch installed at the helm station. To switch off the transmitter, keep the button pressed until all the LEDs turn on (safety time greater than three seconds for child-proof operation). Releasing the on/off button, the transmitter switches off completely. The confirmation of the deactivation is given by the turning off of the LEDs on the remote.
