TÛRANOR PLANET SOLAR

Solar catamaran.

The aim of this globally unique project is to circumnavigate the world in a catamaran powered exclusively by solar energy.

At a remarkable average speed of 8 knots, the expedition is expected to last around 140 days - an environmentally friendly and virtually silent way of traveling.

The TÛRANOR PlanetSolar was launched and christened on March 31, 2010 in Kiel. After a successful test voyage in the Mediterranean, the round-the-world trip started on September 27, 2010 in Monaco. Stopovers in major port cities along the equator are intended to bring the project closer to many people and at the same time raise awareness of renewable energies.

For the equatorial baptism, the Norwegian shipping company Wilhemsen presented the TÛRANOR PlanetSolar with a specially bottled line aquavit, a bottle of which was handed over to the Knierim shipyard managers Steffen Müller and Gunnar Knierim by PlanetSolar project manager Gerhard Beinhauer after completion of the circumnavigation.

The first stop on the world tour was the Canary Islands, before continuing across the Atlantic to Miami in Florida. From there, the route led to Cancun in Mexico, where the World Climate Summit was taking place at the same time. After a stop in Cartagena, the journey continued through the Panama Canal and on to the Galapagos Islands. You can follow the rest of the journey on  planetsolar.org  .

The 31 meter long, 15 meter wide and 60 ton TÛRANOR PlanetSolar is a technical masterpiece. To ensure that the engines are powered exclusively by solar energy, the entire deck area has been fitted with photovoltaic modules. There are also extendable side wings, which also carry solar modules. The total collector area thus amounts to 537 square meters, consisting of 825 solar modules and 38,000 photovoltaic cells. The energy is stored in lithium-ion batteries, which are the largest of their kind with a capacity of 1,130 kWh and weigh 11.7 tons. The four electric motors with a total output of 240 kW are fed from the batteries and act on two drive shafts with surface propellers. The two propellers rotate very slowly and have a high torque.

Completely powered by sunlight, the Tûranor PlanetSolar, the only solar-powered boat, tours the world

A seafaring band of scientists, engineers and yachtsmen with an obsession for Jules Verne and clean energy are building what they call the largest solar boat in the world, a $13 million catamaran they hope will take them around the world next year.

Construction is well underway on the 98-foot-long vessel, which will feature 5,059 square feet of photovoltaic cells. The project is being funded by Rivendell Holding AG, a Swiss firm that invests in renewable energy, simply to prove it can be done and the shipping industry can reduce its dependence on fossil fuel.

The team plans to circumnavigate the globe at the equator in 120 days at an average speed of 10 knots. Should they succeed, Planet Solar will set a maritime milestone. Solar electric pleasure boats have been tooling around lakes for awhile now, solar electric ferries are increasingly common and a solar electric catamaran called Sun 21 crossed the Atlantic in 29 days. But so far no one's made it around the world in a solar electric boat.

"Solar boats are a viable form of transportation for the future," Delia Collardi, a spokeswoman for the project, told Wired.com. "Our society is too dependent on fossil fuels, which are in limited supply and which are causing measurable negative effects on the earth's atmosphere. It's now time to demonstrate the potential that renewable energies have to offer in the area of mobility."

The project still has a long way to go - approximately 24,901.55 miles - but work on the solar cat's hulls is almost complete.

Planet Solar is being built at the Knierim Yacht Club in Kiel, Germany. The vessel, which is shaped something like an arrowhead, will be 98 feet long and 50 feet wide. That climbs to 114 feet and 82 feet when the solar panels are fully unfurled.

There aren't many details on the drivetrain, and Collardi says the batteries "have not been defined." A press kit says the boat will weigh 60 tons and feature 470 square meters - 5,059 square feet - of photovoltaic cells that offer 22 percent efficiency.

Collardi says the vessel will have enough power to carry skipper Raphael Domjan, the 37-year-old founder of Planet Solar, and navigator Gerard d'Aboville. Both men are accomplished sailors and adventurers who, according to a press release, "want to be the Phileas Fogg " of the 21st Century.

Fogg, of course, was the adventurous main character Around the World in Eighty Days , Jules Verne's novel about a man who travels by train, balloon, steamer and even elephants to circle the globe in record time and win a bet. Verne's great-grandson Jean Verne has signed on to the project, which organizers say represents "humanity's hope for a better future."

The route is still being worked out, but Planet Solar will set sail from Marseilles, France sometime next year and cross the Atlantic, then cut through the Panama Canal to cross the Pacific. From there she'll head south through the South China Sea to the Indian Ocean before crossing the Indian Ocean and Red Sea. Then it's through the Suez Canal and across the Mediterranean Sea and back home.

Ports of call are to be announced, but stops in New York, Shanghai, Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Monaco are among those being considered. Supporters and well-wishers will be welcomed aboard, and Collardi says 50 people can fit inside the catamaran for short jaunts.

Fastest Transatlantic crossing in a solar boat – MS TÛRANOR PlanetSolar today registered record in St. Marteen – 26 days, 19 hours and 10 minutes from Las Palmas to the Caribbean Islands powered solely by the sun

On her expedition around the globe, MS TÛRANOR PlanetSolar, the world’s largest solar boat, is approaching the United States. Having left in Monaco on the 27th of September, TÛRANOR is planned to dock in Miami on Monday, November 29. Miami is the first major stopover on the world tour. In Miami, the boat is touching US American ground for the first time.

Today, on November 18, TÛRANOR PlanetSolar briefly stopped in  St Martin to register the fasted Transatlantic crossing of a solar boat yet. For TÛRANOR, it took 26 days and 19 hours 10 minutes to cover the distance between Las Palmas and St Marteen (before: Sun21 crossing the Atlantic in 2007 in 29 days, 8 hours 30 minutes). PlanetSolar’s project founder Raphaël Domjan (38) and the TÛRANOR Crew – Captain Patrick Marchesseau, Mikaela von Koskull, Jens Langwasser, Christian Ochsenbein and Daniel Stahl have covered 2.690 miles / 4.982 kilometres from Las Palmas to St. Marteen.

A technological feat of German-Swiss cooperation, the catamaran, measuring close to 102 feet in length and 50 feet in width, is on a pioneering circumnavigation around the globe entirely without the use of traditional fuels. It is powered exclusively by solar energy. The project PlanetSolar, based on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland and initiated by the Swiss Raphaël Domjan, seeks to test the boundaries of solar technologies and inspire people across the world with its ambitious voyage, attempting the first circumnavigation of the seas exclusively with solar power. Sailing under Swiss flag, the TÛRANOR PlanetSolar is literally carrying the message of the potential of solar energy around the world. For this project, high-efficiency solar cells of the US manufacturer SunPower Corporation (San Jose, California) were used. Through extensive manual work, an exceptionally large marine solar generator with a total area of approx. 540 m2 was created.

Raphaël Domjan says: “It’s a success for the whole team of PlanetSolar and our partners who for many years have put their know-how into this wonderful project. We are very proud to demonstrate that ‘we have the technology to change’. The new technologies and renewable energy represent an opportunity for our society, and there is incredible potential and challenge for this industry and business in the near future.”

TÛRANOR PlanetSolar will be leaving St. Marteen today at ca. 10.30 a.m. LT / 03:30 p.m. UTC and is proceeding on her way to Miami . After the stop in Miami, TÛRANOR will head for Cancun , where she will dock during the World Climate Conference, as a flagship carrying the message about the efficient application of renewable energies around the world (excepted arrival Dec 6).

planetsolar: the first solar powered boat around the world

the world-record setting ‘MS tûranor planetsolar’ is the first entirely solar-powered ship to circumnavigate the globe

at 2:00pm on september 27th, 2010, the ‘MS tûranor planetsolar ‘ boat set sail from the port of monaco, with the intention of achieving the first voyage around the world powered exclusively by solar energy. 585 days, 28 countries, three oceans and 11 seas later, the boat completed its journey, crossing its finish line in monaco at 2:12pm.

this month, ‘planetsolar’ has just set out for a new journey, sailing from coast to coast in the mediterranean sea as a living exhibition of the commercial viability of solar technology. the craft has completed visits in barcelona and mallorca, spain, and has just docked in cagliari, on the italian island of sardinia. ‘more than a ship‘, the new crew explains, ‘[‘planetsolar’] is now a mobile battery‘, designed to power light shows, concerts, and press exhibitions as it docks in each port.

visitors are invited to explore ‘planetsolar’ in person in cagliari through july 30th, 2012, and listen to new captain eric dumont speak about the ship and its journey on the morning (11:00am) of tuesday, july 24th.

named ‘tûranor’ after ‘the power of the sun’ in JRR tolkein’s book ‘the lord of the rings’, the 35-meter long (115-foot) catamaran is covered in 537 square meters (5780 square feet) of photovoltaic panels with 18.8% yield, generating an estimated 260,000 kWh of energy over its 60,006-kilometer (37,000 nautical mile) journey. 38,000 individual solar cells feed six blocks of lithium-ion batteries.

the ‘planet solar’ craft itself was developed over the course of eight years, requiring 14 months of construction. the project was founded in 2004 by swiss explorer raphaël domjan and financed by german entrepreneur immo ströher. new zealand designer craig loomes directed the development of the double hull vessel, working alongside engineers to optimize not only the energy collection but also the aerodynamics and efficiency of the lightweight carbon ship.

‘planetsolar’ holds four naval records: the fastest crossing of the atlantic ocean by solar boat (26 days 19 hours 10 minutes); the longest distance ever covered by a solar electric vehicle; the first circumnavigation achieved by solar craft (taking 1 year 7 months and 7 days); and the fastest crossing of the south china sea by solar power (4 days 23 hours 45 minutes).

for its world tour, the catamaran set sail with a crew of six, which was reduced to four for the second leg of the journey, although six former french soldiers were also dispatched to the boat for protection around the gulf of aden, where the crew closely evaded pirates in march 2012 as it rounded the coast somalia.

beginning in june 2012, a new crew led by french captain eric dumont has taken the helm.

World's largest solar-powered boat: PlanetSolar catamaran

At least that's the thinking behind the new PlanetSolar watercraft, a 100-foot-long, 50-foot-wide catamaran that was unveiled last week at HDW Shipyard in Germany.

What if it's an overcast day? Batteries below deck store enough energy for several days without direct sunlight.

The $24 million boat is expected to begin testing in late March and will set sail on its maiden voyage in 2011. At a top speed of 15 knots -- that's 17 miles per hour for landlubbers -- it's expected to be the fastest solar boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean and the first to cross the Pacific, with planned stops in New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, Singapore and Abu Dhabi.

World's Largest Solar-Powered Catamaran Planet Solar Visits HKUST

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted a special visit by the world's largest solar-powered catamaran MS Tûranor PlanetSolar today (18 August) to raise environmental consciousness among the younger generation. HKUST and PlanetSolar share the same vision of building a culture of environmental protection across the globe.

The owners of PlanetSolar Cordula Ströeher, Jan Hendrik Ströeher and Oliver Goldenbow, Captain Erwann Le Rouzic and three crew members visited HKUST today. Prof Yuk-shan Wong, HKUST's Vice-President for Administration and Business, and Prof Eden Y Woon, Vice-President for Institutional Advancement, joined over 200 HKUST faculty members, students, as well as primary and secondary school students to welcome the boat. The Captain shared the experience about the solar-powered expedition, the significance of solar energy development and green living.

HKUST President Tony F Chan stated that HKUST has been proactively promoting sustainable development. These initiatives include the establishment of the Division of Environment, the launch of Environmental Management and Technology degree program, and the first Air Quality Research Supersite for real-time characterization. The University has been systematically promoting environmental measures on campus, which include implementing green plans in every unit, energy-saving initiatives and waste reduction.

To raise consciousness of environmental protection among the younger generation in Hong Kong, HKUST invited over 100 primary and secondary school students to participate in a series of environmental activities relevant to their daily lives. Apart from having a low carbon lunch, students learned green living and 'zero waste', and participated in building solar models. Prof Chak Chan, Head of the Division of Environment, gave a presentation on 'Air Quality in Hong Kong'. HKUST faculty members and researchers introduced HKUST's environmental initiatives on campus. Students visited the University's Air Quality Research Supersite, Coastal Marine Laboratory, Mobile Real-time Air Monitoring Platform (MAP) and other research facilities and deepened their understandings of sustainable technology.

Hong Kong is PlanetSolar's only stop in China. The boat is scheduled to leave Hong Kong on 22 August. PlanetSolar is 31 meters long and 7.5 meters high with 500 square meters of highly energy-efficient solar cells. In all, 38,000 solar cells are woven into PlanetSolar's photovoltaic framework, and 72 lithium-ion batteries store their captured energy.

PlanetSolar , conçu par l’architecte naval néo-zélandais Craig Loomes et financé par l’entrepreneur allemand Immo Ströher , voit sa construction débuter en 2008 , menée à Kiel en Allemagne par le chantier Knierim Yachtbau . PlanetSolar prend forme et devient un catamaran géant, le plus grand jamais construit dans le monde.

D’allure futuriste, le gigantesque esquif solaire est cependant entièrement conçu et équipé avec la technologie du moment . Il tenait en effet à cœur à Raphaël Domjan de prouver que les technologies existent pour réaliser des exploits à l’énergie solaire et que leur potentiel était déjà immense. Tous les matériaux, éléments et instruments de PlanetSolar sont alors disponibles sur le marché .

Le 25 février 2010 , PlanetSolar est dévoilé à Kiel devant plus de 200 invités. Peu après, le 31 mars, le plus grand catamaran du monde touche l’eau pour la première fois dans le port de Kiel , accompagné d’une émotion non dissimulée pour l’équipe qui a permis ce moment. Après ses phases de test, il est convoyé vers la Méditerranée , prêt à entamer son aventure de circumnavigation.

7,000-year-old canoes from Italy are the oldest ever found in the Mediterranean

The wooden vessels were likely used by Neolithic people for fishing and transport.

Five canoes found at the bottom of a lake in Italy were used more than 7,000 years ago for fishing and transport by people living in a Neolithic village near what is now Rome.

Archaeologists discovered the boats at La Marmotta, a prehistoric coastal settlement that is now underwater, while conducting ongoing excavations, according to a study published Wednesday (March 20) in the journal PLOS One . 

The large dugout canoes — which were constructed of alder, oak, poplar and European beech — were built between 5700 and 5100 B.C., radiocarbon dating revealed.

The boats are the oldest ever found in the Mediterranean, according to a statement.

"One of the smallest [boats] was probably used for fishing," study co-author Mario Mineo , an archaeologist and director coordinator at the Museum of Civilization in Rome, told Live Science in an email. "The two largest measured almost 11 meters long by 1.2 m wide [36 feet by 4 feet] and it is probable that — thanks also to the easy access to the Tyrrhenian coast via the Arrone river — they could have been used for further trade."

The boat builders also used "advanced construction techniques" to craft the vessels. For example, they incorporated transverse reinforcements, which would have increased the durability of the canoes' hulls, according to the statement.

"The construction techniques and materials used indicate a sophisticated understanding of boat-building and navigation," senior study author Niccolò Mazzucco , a senior researcher in the Department of Civilizations and Forms of Knowledge at the University of Pisa in Italy, told Live Science in an email. "[This] is significant because it showcases the ingenuity and skill of ancient peoples in utilizing natural resources to create efficient means of transportation."

For example, the researchers think the vessels may have been equipped with "sails or outriggers," or parallel support floats, Mazzucco said. This can be evidenced by three T-shaped wooden objects found at the site near the canoes. Each of these items contained various holes, which were likely used to "fasten ropes tied to sails or other nautical elements," according to the statement.

"Such advancements suggest a deeper comprehension of maritime technology and navigation, with vessels equipped for long-distance voyages," Mazzucco added. "However, our current understanding falls short of precisely identifying the types of boats used, their construction methods and how components like canoes and T-shaped wooden objects were mounted together — whether through ropes, wooden pegs or other means."

The builders' ability to include multiple types of wood in their creations is also noteworthy, as it shows that they knew which "trees could be used to make the dugouts," Mazzucco said. "In contrast, at other [Neolithic] sites where more than one canoe has been found, the same [tree] species was usually used for all of them."

In addition to the boats, archaeologists found numerous artifacts scattered around the site, including flint and obsidian tools, pottery vessels, figurines and ornaments, according to the study.

In 2022, the researchers also found 52 wooden sickles at the site that were used for harvesting cereal grains.

"These artifacts offer further insights into the daily lives, symbolic and technological capabilities of the ancient inhabitants," Mazzucco said. "No other site in the Mediterranean presents such [an] amount of harvesting tools."

Munich, 28 May 2013 – The technology company The Linde Group has formed a joint venture with chemical company JSC KuibyshevAzot to build and operate a large ammonia plant at the Togliatti site in Russia's Samara region. Both partners signed an agreement to this effect on 27 May 2013. The deal will involve a total investment volume of around EUR 275 million. Both companies have an equal stake in the newly formed venture, Linde Nitrogen Togliatti.

"We are proud to team up with our partner to support further expansion of the Togliatti industrial hub," said Professor Dr Aldo Belloni, Member of the Executive Board of Linde AG. "This project not only strengthens our presence in Samara, but also our position as the leading gases and engineering company in the fast-growing Russian market."

The Engineering Division of The Linde Group will construct the new, state-of-the-art on-site plant, designed to deliver exceptional levels of energy efficiency. The plant will have a production capacity of 1,340 tonnes of ammonia per day (tpd). Construction work is scheduled for completion in 2016.

JSC KuibyshevAzot, one of the biggest chemical companies in Russia, plans to expand Togliatti production capacity for caprolactam – a precursor of polyamide plastics – and nitrogen fertilizers. It will need a rising stream of ammonia to support these growth plans.
