Guide to Malaga

A cultural getaway found on the Spanish Coast

Situated in southern Spain, Málaga is a beautiful port city that is loaded with history and overflowing with youthful vigour. More than just the birthplace of Picasso, Malaga has been designed for relaxation with myriad golf courses, a selection of beautiful wellness resorts and an innovative culinary scene. With nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, and several kilometres of beach to explore, it's quite easy to see why Malaga has been described as "Ciudad del Paraíso" (Paradise City).

The Spanish Coast spoils its superyacht visitors with a fascinating array of azure beauty and city-living and Málaga lives up to these high standards. As one of the oldest cities in Spain , hallmarks of its rich past are scattered across the city, the cobbled streets of the old quarter, its mountainside Roman Amphitheatre, the Moorish citadels of the Alcazaba and Gilfarbaro. Make sure you don’t miss a visit to the famous cathedral that dominates the old part of the city. Built in 1528, the Renaissance and Baroque-style cathedral is a beautiful structure enjoyed by all its visitors.

Yachting enthusiasts are attracted to this bustling city because of its cultural heritage and subtropical climate during the day. However, Málaga offers the perfect nightlife scene, inviting crowds of fashionistas and some of the most elite to party from dusk till dawn. With numerous options to suit all tastes including tapas bars, clubs on the sea, drinking in the university district and romantic walks through the streets of the old town. From rooftop bars to elite nightclubs, Málaga’s nightlife is known to be sophisticated and fashionable but also to the hand and vibrant.

In the historic city centre, just across from the cathedral, is Malaga’s main venue for live jazz. This American-style jazz club, with incredibly stylish decor and atmospheric lighting, this lavish club hosts nightly concerts which feature both local and international artists. After a lazy day cruising in the Spanish sunshine aboard your superyacht charter , enjoy an evening of classic cocktails and great music.

If you’re looking to dive into the exceptional culinary provided in the city, For dinner, head to the city’s only Michelin-starred restaurants, the eponymous José Carlos García. Select a table on the restaurant’s beautiful terrace, boasting the most spectacular sunsets, the ambience created here is impeccable. Diners have one choice, a spectacular tasting menu, which changes regularly according to local produce. Be sure to expect expertly crafted seafood made with that day’s catch, great wines and flawless service.

The Spanish Coastline offers a balmy Mediterranean retreat full of energetic cities, awe-inspiring architecture and old-town beauty, all wrapped in century old architecture. Luxury cruises, superyachts and mega yachts in Malaga, holidays in style

Luxury yatchs

The Port of Malaga is a stopover on many luxury cruises and super yachts sailing in the Mediterranean. These cruise ships and mega-yachts, unlike mega cruise ships (as Symphony of the Seas ), do not carry thousands of passengers, so those who travel on these ships generally have a high income level.

Have you ever wondered what luxury cruises or superyachts are like? Are you planning to travel in one of those luxury cruises?

  • 1.1. Curiosities of the cruise
  • 1.2. Features
  • 2. Ocean Majesty
  • 3.1. Features
  • 4.1. How much does it cost to rent a private superyacht?
  • 4.2. Superyachts and boats for rent on the Costa del Sol
  • 5. Luxury cruise from Malaga?

Wind Star Cruise

The Wind Star is a great 4 mast sailboat that has all the comforts that any traveller needs for a pleasant cruise in style. There is a restaurant, library, spa, fitness centre, casino and even a swimming pool with bar among its services. Other sailboats of this company are the Wind Spirit and the Wind Surf.

The WindStar sailboat will visit the port of Malaga up to 17 times during 2018. Another of the company’s ships that was already in Malaga during the year 2012, was the’Wind Surf’.

Curiosities of the cruise

Windstar has a capacity of 148 passengers and 101 crew members. The cruise ship is registered in the Bahamas.

If you want to have dinner under the starlight, you just need to reserve the space in advance.

The cruise ship has a platform from which you can enjoy water activities.

Wind Star sailboat

As a good luxury cruiser, you won’t lack anything in your cabin. There are two types of cabins inside this sailboat, the most exclusive one has 220 square meters for your enjoyment, a size that is even larger than my house.

  • Queen Size Bed
  • Flat screen with DVD player (no Blu-ray in 2018?)
  • WI-FI Payment
  • Flowers and fruits
  • Private bathroom with hairdryer

The price is between 2000€ and 5000€ per passenger.

Ocean Majesty

luxury yacht in malaga

It has a largest capacity of 621 passengers in 274 cabins and space for 257 crew members. There are 185 cabins with outdoor views and 16 suites. All cabins have air conditioning, shower, satellite TV, safe and mini bar.

  • The dining room does not have windows, although it does have an attractive retro look.
  • It has musical and magic shows, among others.
  • There is a small gym and a sauna.
  • The last renovation of the ship was in 2012.

Among the customers’ opinions, the great friendliness of the crew and the cleanliness of the boat stand out.

The average price is between 1500€ and 3400€ depending on the route chosen.

It is expected that during the year 2018 the cruise will visit the Port of Malaga again during the month of September.

https://www.majesticcruises.gr/ocean_majesty.html

Seadream II

Seadream II is the cruise chosen by those who want to discover the world’s most select ports in a luxurious and personal atmosphere. The crew of this ship attends in a personalized way to the 113 passengers that can accommodate the ship.

The cruise ship is registered in Oslo and has a base port in the city of Malaga.

The chef will prepare dishes with fresh products bought in the markets of each port. This is something that cannot be done on mega cruise ships with more than 2000 people on board, but it has a price.

Seadream II

The slogan of this cruise is “ sail on your own yacht “, it is intended that the passenger feels as if he were on his own boat.

This cruise ship has 4 types of cabins. The smallest one is 18 square meters while the largest one has 42 square meters and 2 private bathrooms with bathtubs. All cabins have ocean views.

Among the curiosities of this boat is a Nespresso machine in each cabin. The cabins are very luxurious with a wooden decoration.

  • There is a swimming pool, jacuzzi, bars, main restaurant and buffet-restaurant.
  • Balinese beds and hammock area for sunbathing.
  • Spa and gym.
  • Library and Internet room
  • Activities on the sea: kayaking, skiing, canoeing, etc….

The price ranges from 3000€ to 6700€ for a basic cabin.

Those who have no financial worries can book the Owner’s Suite for as little as €17,000 on a 7-day cruise. If you think it’s expensive, continue reading, it’s what a cheap super-yacht costs a day.

No doubt after watching the promotional video you want to live on the boat:

It is expected that during 2018 the Seadream II will make up to 6 stops to disembark and pick up passengers at the Port of Malaga.

If you want to show the world your purchasing power, you don’t have time to spend the money you earn monthly or the money burns in your pocket you may be interested in renting a yacht with its crew.

Rent a private yatch: Superyachts, megayachts or gigayachts?

It is quite common to see superyachts and megayachts docked at either Puerto Banus or Puerto Marina, consequently with a luxury sports car parked in front of them.

If you want to show the world your purchasing power, you don’t have time to spend the money you earn monthly or the money burns in your pocket you might want renting a superyacht.

Why share a cruise with strangers? In Puerto Banus and Puerto Marina in Benalmádena I have been able to see some of these superyachts for rent.

How much does it cost to rent a private superyacht?

The price is undoubtedly popular (among the rich people), for only 650,000€ per week (93,000€ per day) you can have at your disposal a luxury megayacht with its crew. The space available is usually between 10 and 15 guests.

Anastasia megayatch

A megayacht such as ‘Anastasia’ will have all kinds of toys such as jet skis and another small boat inside.

This superyacht also has a gym, a swimming pool, a party room and a private cinema. When you pay such a large sum, it’s not in the plans to get bored.

Renting a luxury megayatch

In addition other options such as the megayacht ‘Silver Fast’ for the same price include space for your vehicle or helicopter. At this economic level there are no restrictions.

  • ¿What is the difference between superyachts, megayachts and gigayachts? The size matters!

Superyachts and boats for rent on the Costa del Sol

There are more affordable options you can find docked on the Costa del Sol. For about 64000€ per week you have at your disposal a superyacht for 12 people departing from Sotogrande, also from Puerto Banus for a small extra fee of 1200€.

Falcon yatch in Estepona

If you don’t need that much space or your pocket isn’t that big there are much cheaper and less glamorous boats that include the captain on board. Renting a zodiac in Malaga can cost around 350€ per day, a sailboat around 500€ per day, a small fishing boat around 170€ per day and a small yacht between 1500 and 5000€ per day.

Chinese boat 'Junco' in Benalmadena for renting and trips

Some boats like ‘Junco Chino’ in Benalmadena offer the possibility to rent it privately for about 1000€ a day. In the case of sharing it in any of their scheduled trips along the coast the price is about 18€ per person.

Luxury cruise from Malaga?

If you are planning to board a luxury cruise ship from Malaga or the cruise ship you are travelling on makes a stop at our port, you should consider visiting the city .

The port of Malaga is very close to the old town and the main monuments. I recommend you take a look at Malaga’s main tourist attractions .

If you don’t know how to get around and have limited time you can take a look at the means of transport you can book online:

  • If you can afford a trip on one of these boats I think the best thing to suit your needs is a private vehicle with a driver at the same level. You can choose the Luxury option and opt for the top-of-the-range models.
  • If you prefer to drive yourself you can rent a car at Malaga Port .  With the booking you can pick up the car and return it at the same port before boarding back. Needless to say, you can also book a top-of-the-range car if that’s what you need.

So finally what are your thoughts? Feel like booking a luxury cruise from Malaga or maybe a mega-yacht for your holiday?

Noted as the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, Malaga in southern Spain has a harbour that is protected from the North winds by its mountainous background and, not surprisingly, is reported having the highest average temperatures year on year for the whole of the Spanish Mediterranean coastline.

More Details

For the serious yachting enthusiast this is the ideal place to start exploring the Costa del Sol. The bay of Andalusia in which Malaga nestles is one of the safest harbours capable of giving safe anchorage to the largest of luxury yachts . Even the Queen Mary II is known to have anchored here. The archaeological history of Malaga is unique in that findings to the east of the city at Zafanaya have revealed that this site was even known to Neanderthal man. Malaga as a port of call appears to have been founded by the Phoenicians in around 770 BC. They named the port "Malaka" hence the name has changed little over the years. After the Phoenician era, the Greeks held control of the city until the Carthaginians defeated them and held sway until 206 BC. The "Punic Wars" saw the defeat of the Hannibal by the Romans who called the area around the port "Flavia Malacite." They built roads to connect other Roman ports, villas and an amphitheatre some of which has been excavated in 1951. After the Roman Empire broke up, the Arabs invaded the area and during the 13th Century they converted Malaga into an inner fortress that was surrounded by high walls and five ornate defensive gates. Some of this remains today and is well worth a guided tour to appreciate the reason for Malaga having such a mixed architectural history. In 1487 the Arab control was surrendered to the catholic Kings and in the 16th and 17th Centuries the harbour was extended twice, the massive cathedral erected but not completed until the 18th Century giving the cathedral and bell-tower a mixed Renaissance-baroque structure. The 20th Century has proven to be a prosperous one for the town with its multitude of museums, restaurants, hotels and a local airport. Good planning has ensured that the old town is separated from its growing industrial suburbs and that Malaga is now the 8th largest European city on the Mediterranean. Malaga's esplanade and shopping malls are very attractive and for a relaxing stroll the Malaga Park that stretches parallel to Guadiaro Quay has two walking pathways one on the north side and two on the south side. If time ashore is not a problem then the Picasso museum and its near neighbour the Contemporary Art Centre are both worth a visit. They are both a few minutes walk from the Hotel Malaga a 4- star luxury hotel on the seafront. The Malaga cathedral, though closed to the public on Sundays and Holidays, has the highest tower in the city and thus very easy to find. The fact that such a tall structure has survived an earthquake and various minor wars is something of a miracle. As for the best times to sail into the Bay of Andalusia, it is worth remembering that Malaga has three major festivals that can be its busiest time of the year. The Arts Festivals all happen in October when the whole month is dedicated to celebrating Picasso's works in the Plaza Marina. There are also five exhibition halls that feature local artists. At Easter the Holy Week (Semana Santa) Festival, that has a more quiet and contemplative atmosphere, still has plenty of colour to the floats and plenty of music. The third festival of importance is the Malaga Fair. During this event symbols of Spanish culture take pride of place. There are again parades processing round the streets and monuments, live Flamenco shows and a emphasis on Spanish and local music.

'Access to hidden-gem ports': Why this luxury yacht is the best option for beach lovers

“This is your yacht, to do with as you please,” Captain Rob O’Leary told guests of the Emerald Sakara , the second luxury superyacht from Emerald Cruises. “We have an international crew from 21 different nations, and we are all here for you.”

I was on the maiden voyage of the 360-foot Sakara, a December 2023 sailing with the added glamor of a Champagne christening in San Juan, Puerto Rico, led by the ship’s godmother, Kelly Craighead. She is president of Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade organization.

“Sakara” is a Sanskrit word meaning “thoughts become things” – a fitting name, given the thought that went into the ship’s chic design. And our itinerary for the week couldn’t be more yacht-like – an island-hopping experience in the West Indies, stopping in out-of-the-way ports that larger cruise ships can’t manage. And while some smaller boats can feel rocky, the Sakara’s stabilizers keep the ship on an even keel.

Are luxury cruise ships worth the money? We did the math for Silversea's Silver Nova.

With just 100 guests and 76 crew, the Sakara is part of the larger trend in cruising: smaller ships that cater to vacationers who want the style and feel of a yacht, and the intimate service that accompanies that, with the amenities of a larger ship. Craighead said small-ship cruises offer “luxury at a great value, access to hidden-gem ports and unique features like marinas for water activities directly off the ship. These small ships can even be chartered for your own amazing, private yacht experience.”

After departing from San Juan, the Sakara reached the Puerto Rican island of Culebra in a few hours, just 20 miles off the coast. We hopped in a taxi van at the port to reach the pristine waters of Flamenco Beach, which consistently makes the world’s top 10 lists. It was a fall-asleep-on-the-sand kind of day, under brightly colored umbrellas, with multiple trips to the canteen for french fries.

“I hope you enjoyed Culebra today because it’s quite hard to get in, through a very narrow channel,” O’Leary said at a supper-hour briefing.

The next day, we stopped at the nearby island of Vieques, which is filled with wild horses – about 2,000 of them – most of which are fully accustomed to the photo op. We docked at Esperanza Bay and wandered the waterfront. Jeeps or ATVs were available to rent for those who wanted to beach-hop, but we settled into the sand at Sun Bay. And when we sailed into Cruz Bay on the U.S. Virgin Island of St. John the next day, there were yachts and catamarans everywhere – and the Sakara fit right in.

The crew outdid itself the next day at White Bay Beach on Jost Van Dyke, the smallest of the British Virgin Islands. A barbecue feast awaited us, along with beach loungers, steel drum entertainment, and all the paddles and water toys from the ship. Later, we wandered down the beach to find a young yacht crowd, groups of friends who have rented their boats, all knee-deep in their mojitos.

“I get a real kick out of driving the Emerald Sakara into St. Barths, muscling in and anchoring next to all the other superyachts,” O’Leary said. “It looks good in the pictures.” A stop there brought a snorkeling excursion, a bit of high-end shopping and a few rosé-soaked hours on Plage de Saline.

Back on board, the creature comforts of the Sakara included plenty of outdoor space to connect with the ocean, a small infinity pool, a full-service spa and a large, elegant dining room and terrace. It’s all part of the cushy yacht lifestyle.

The ship will spend the summer and fall cruising the Mediterranean Sea – heading for the French and Italian rivieras, Croatia and Greece – with eight-day itineraries from $5,100. The Emerald Sakara will be back in the Caribbean next December, with eight-day cruises starting at $4,100.

Editor’s note: The contributor of this story received access to this cruise from Emerald Cruises. USA TODAY maintains editorial control of reviews.

Huge 'butler' vessel for luxury megayachts docks at Malaga port

The supply ship is valued at an eye-watering 100 million euros, has its own helicopter and is owned by the person believed to be the richest in the southern hemisphere.

A vessel that provides support and logistics services to luxury megayachts on the high seas has docked in the Port of Malaga.

The 'butler' ship, anchored at Malaga's pier one, also houses a helicopter and carries up to four smaller recreational and rescue vessels.

The vessel is called U-81, and is 80 metres long, 16.20 metres wide and was built at the Damen shipyard in the Netherlands in 2022. Its cruising speed is 12 knots and has an estimated range of 5,000 nautical miles, allowing it to remain at sea for long periods. The U-81 can accommodate up to eight passengers in four cabins and has a crew of 16 people.

The vessel is often positioned at sea alongside megayachts, ready to be on call for any services or logistical support. It is equipped with a crane that can move up to 12 tonnes. This supply boat also carries dinghies, jet skis, kayaks and water sports boards. There is also a spacious lounge area with a bar inside, as well as a gym and spa area.

New Zealand billionaire Graeme Hart, founder and owner of the investment fund Reynolds Group Holdings, owns the vessel. He is considered one of the richest people in the southern hemisphere. The estimated value of the U-81 is 100 million euros, with an annual maintenance cost of 15 million.

Jefferies CEO promises he’s still ‘extremely bullish’ despite selling $65 million in stock to buy himself a luxury yacht from a client

Yacht and glass of wine

Jefferies’ boss Richard Handler is not your average investment banking CEO: He’s a minor Instagram celebrity who tells his fans to protect their work-life balance —and he’s just taken a leaf out of his own book by splashing out on a “gift to himself” that he can enjoy off duty with his family.

The 62-year-old, who joined Jefferies in 1990 as a trader and salesman, has sold $65 million of his company stock to buy himself a luxury yacht.

Handler sold 1.5 million shares, or 7% of his holdings, to facilitate the purchase, marking the first time he has sold shares in Jefferies in the 34 years he’s been at the bank, other than for charitable or tax purposes.

“My sale of shares today was a gift to myself and my family, and I do not intend to sell any further shares,” Handler said in a statement . “I remain extremely bullish on Jefferies.”

Proceeds from Wednesday’s sale are being used to buy a personal boat and pay tax obligations, Jefferies echoed, while adding that following the transaction, Handler will still own about 19.25 million Jefferies shares.

About 70% of the CEO’s pay has been in the form of company shares, the company added.

According to the Financial Times , Handler is buying the 164ft yacht from Tilman Fertitta—the hospitality billionaire, owner of the NBA’s Houston Rockets, and a longtime Jefferies client.

It’s not the first time the duo have done business together: The two men have raised four special purpose acquisition companies together under the name Landcadia Holdings.

Fertitta has even described Handler as one of his closest friends and has credited the banker with building a “ juggernaut ” that can go toe-to-toe with more established rivals.

Fortune has contacted Jefferies for comment.

You’re in charge of your work-life balance

Handler recently encouraged his 48,000-strong Instagram following to “ take responsibility ” for their life choices, including creating boundaries with work to avoid burnout.

“There are always times when sacrifices must be made and sometimes there are periods of intensity when you have absolutely no choice, but surprise, surprise, the world will keep turning if you inject the right amount of personal balance,” he wrote.

“Work hard, and when your work is done, leave the office and go exercise, see your family and friends, explore a new city, or just rest,” Handler similarly advised Wall Street’s interns last year. “The ‘first in’ and the ‘last out’ may not be viewed as the most dedicated, but rather as the one who wastes the most time.”

His view is on work-life balance is a breath of fresh air in the famously dog-eat-dog financial industry.

Wall Street workers would often be on the job for 120 hours a week prior to the pandemic, with research revealing that it was leading to a range of physical and mental health problems in the sector.

Much has changed since then, thanks to the pandemic-induced shift to working from home: Last year, more than two out of three banks were offering workers either full flexibility or some sort of hybrid work arrangement, according to a survey of more than 300 financial services institutions by Scoop, which helps companies coordinate hybrid teams.

But banking giant bosses have been mustering all their power to return to pre-pandemic ways of working. Both JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs have already ordered workers back to the office five days a week. The latter bank’s CEO, David Solomon , famously called remote working “an aberration that we’re going to correct as quickly as possible.”

In London’s financial district, not even a global pandemic, lockdowns, and new levels of respect for colleagues’ personal space (remember the elbow bump?) were enough to kill Wolf of Wall Street-era antics.

Last month, a cryptocurrency company served sushi off the bodies of half-naked models at a private function —and the hedonistic soirée is just the latest example of a series of outdated activities in the City as bosses try to turn back the clock on recent inclusive advances to working culture.

Work-hard play-hard

Handler may be a fan of ringfencing your time and finding balance, but it doesn’t mean he’s shy when it comes to working hard—he is one of few executives who have truly started from the bottom and worked their way up the ranks.

The New Jersey native joined Jefferies as a trader and salesman in 1990. It took him little over 10 years to scale to the top and by January 2001, Handler was steering Jefferies as its CEO.

Under his leadership, the company has gone on to become one of America’s most prestigious financial institutions that competes against the likes of Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley .

As the company has become more successful, so has Handler. Just a few years into his role, Handler earned himself the title of the “new king of Wall Street” thanks to his $40 million-plus pay package.  By 2021, Bloomberg had estimated that his net worth had already exceeded the $1 billion mark.
