Kansas City Chiefs sailing into Germany with massive ‘ChampionShip’

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Kansas City Chiefs unveil massive plans to take the feel of GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium to Frankfurt Germany next month.

The organization says it plans to recreate elements of Arrowhead and other experiences fans in Kansas City enjoy on the “Championship.” The massive yacht will be floating in Frankfurt’s Main River ahead of the Chiefs-Dolphins game on Sunday, Nov. 5.

The “ChampionShip” is a custom-wrapped Chiefs-themed boat. It is named in honor of the Chief’s three Super Bowl titles.

The Chiefs said the boat will serve as the central hub for Chiefs fans leading up to the game, hosting private VIP events and a Season Ticket Member rally throughout the weekend.

The ChampionShip will be open to the public Friday, Nov. 3 and Saturday, Nov. 4. It includes the following photo opportunities:

• Fans will be able to hold up a Chiefs jersey for a photo
• Fans can have a photo taken hauling in a jump-ball pass
• Tour a replica locker room designed like those at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Fans can also put on shoulder pads and helmets
• Step up to the podium in front of a branded backdrop, like fans are taking questions from the media
• Fans can get their pictures taken with the club’s Super Bowl LVII Lombardi Trophy, which is making the trip from Kansas City to Frankfurt for the game
• Finally get the experience with a photo opportunity from the boat’s rooftop featuring the Frankfurt skyline

The Chiefs will bring memorabilia to Frankfurt and plan to set up a mini-Chiefs Hall of Honor inside the ChampionShip for fans to learn more about the franchise and the NFL.

The ChampionShip will also host a watch party on gameday. Anyone who wishes to visit the ChampionShip needs to buy a ticket. The Chiefs say tickets go on sale Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 7 a.m. CST. The organization did not release the price of tickets.

The game is not only the Chiefs first regular season game in Germany, but it is also the NFL’s first game in Frankfurt.

Joining the Paradise Point Yacht Club provides endless opportunities to learn to sail or sail better. The first lesson for most of us was how quickly and easily invitations come for evening sails after the monthly social, a day’s sail the next weekend, or the chance to crew boats of all shapes and sizes during a race. You might even find an experienced sailor or two looking for crew for a bareboat charter to an exotic destination you previously only dreamed you might visit.

Club history, jacomo sailing club was founded in 1958, a year before lake jacomo was completed and filled., late in 1958, the dam was completed, the gravel roads were almost done, and the anchors were down in sailboat cove. the drysail lot was planned, as well as the fishing docks at the south end, but the lake was dry. the scheduled opening was spring of 1960., the founders, a group of 12 men, met in kelly's bar in westport, and planned the formation of the jacomo sailing club. at that time there was no public sailing in the kansas city area. (most of the large public lakes that now surround this area were not even built yet.)  that winter 120 club members were signed up. the club elected officers; the first commodore being jack cleary. they established by-laws, bought equipment, and waited. the winter and early spring were very wet in kansas city, and the lake filled in by april. although the park would not be fully done until 1960, the jacomo sailing club. started its first season., the 1970 years were the high water mark of the club. in 1977, the club had 350 members, and averaged over 175 racing boats each sunday.  past jacomo sailing club members have spread sailboat racing all through the midwest, and were the founding fathers of the non-private lake clubs in the kansas city area. in the 1970’s, sailors with cruising sailboats in the 22-23 foot range started showing up on lake jacomo in increasing numbers. impromptu races began and soon people wanted to join the jacomo sailing club and race on a regular basis. in 1979, the first officers were elected and the cruiser fleet was formed., the cruiser fleet became one of the fleets that raced each sunday. after 3 or 4 years, some of the faster cruisers got tired of losing to slower boats based on their handicap numbers and the cruisers split into two fleets. after a few years of split racing, there was a general loss of racing fever. by the mid 1980’s, the jacomo cruiser fleet yacht club had become more of a social organization than a competitive one., now shortened to jacomo yacht club, the community continues on today. while we may not race marked courses every weekend, there are always those who like to compete for bragging rights at the dock after a day of sailing. we still keep to tradition with a couple formal scheduled regattas each year. otherwise our members enjoy rafting up to spend the night or take a dip when the wind isn’t favorable., the club meets monthly during the sailing season and hosts an annual christmas party. it’s a great way to meet new people who share a common interest…sailing. , local sailing vessel history, in the late 1950's to 1960's fiberglass boats were not yet readily available. the first boat in the jacomo sailing community was the y-flyer. the custom was for a club to band together and build the boats out of wood, each member taking a different task. at the end the members would draw for a boat. the y-flyer was an easy boat to build. the club focused on racing with many other related activities. the east drysail lot was full of one-design sailboats including lightnings, thistles, and y-flyers. the smaller boats such as the snipe, windmill, and demon launched from the west side. the lightning fleet was the largest in the us, with 75 boats., during the 1970’s fiberglass boats became common. cruising boats offering comfort and stability were reasonably available. the county deemed it allowable for people to spend the night on their cruising boats. the number of cruising boats grew until they had their own fleet within the club..

Perry Yacht Club on Lake Perry in Meriden, Kansas

ASA had a conversation with Paul Barnett from Perry Yacht Club in Meriden, Kansas, His passion for the area explains why he loves to share it with others through sailing. “I consider this to be the most spectacular view in Kansas” he explains when describing the location of Perry Yacht Club. Home to Perry Yacht Club, Perry Lake is the largest lake in Kansas. The club, on the northwestern shore, is high on a bluff overlooking a large portion of the lake.

Perry Yacht Club is celebrating its 50th year this year and is the center of sailing life in the region hosting events from youth sailing to large regattas to collegiate events.  ASA instructor Paul Barnett has been teaching at Perry Yacht Club for some time and took over the operation of the school last year. PYC is just an hour from Kansas City and within a half-hour of Lawrence and Topeka.

Where They Sail: Sailing on Perry Lake , most PYC sailors come from cities in Northeastern Kansas, but many travel from surrounding states. The Club has a campground where many come for longer stays, while others stay on board their boats, many simply day trip from home as well. We are close to all that Kansas City offers, in sports and culture. University life is close and vibrant.

What They Teach: The Sailing School at Perry Yacht Club offers intro classes, ASA 101, Private Classes, and Zero to Hero Sail Camp for Adults. PYC also has a youth Sailing director who runs youth programs including “Buddy in a Boat” designed around ASA standards for safety and fun.

Meet Their Instructors:  Paul Barnett teaches the adult classes. Paul has been teaching people to sail for 30 years, beginning with a county-run program on a very small lake.He was recruited by Kansas City Sailing who used to run the PYC Sailing School almost 10 years ago  to run their sail camp for kids. That blossomed to Keelboat Instructor Certification and eventually to running the Adult program. “I learned to sail in the Chesapeake near Baltimore. on board a friend’s Merit 23.  After a corporate move brought me to the KC area, I learned lake sailing and enjoyed teaching and competing on smaller boats. As a successful racer, I found that my real passion was in developing sailors through education. My other love, my Paramour is Sailing. I established Paramour Sailing, llc School at Perry Yacht Club to share my passion.”

Their Programs   People are curious about learning to sail. if you are here in the midwest, the costs of just getting to a locale, staying at a resort, finding a coastal sailing school all might be an expense too large to explore something so new and different like sailing. That is a big investment when you don’t know you are going to like it. We offer a less expensive, more time and cost-effective way to learn the basics of sailing. Conversely, we do not have all the elements to offer like tides and currents. As such, we do not offer more advanced classes. Instead, we refer our students to coastal ASA schools once they catch the sailing fever and develop dreams of chartering or cruising the world. Many of our students have done just that.

• How To Learn To Sail You won’t have to buy a boat or learn a new language or buy a new wardrobe to get a taste for sailing. You can dictate how much you want to experience.
• Learning To Sail Is Just The Beginning Sailing means different things to different people. At ASA we understand that learning to sail is just the beginning of a relationship with a lifestyle that is infectious. Where will sailing take you? We have a few ideas but how you view sailing is the most important.
• What Is Your Role on a Boat? What type of sailor are you and what role do you take on the boat? Your ASA sailing education will prepare you to be a skipper on a sailing vessel and with that comes the responsibility of keeping your crew safe and ensuring the safety of the vessel you are sailing.

Paul Barnett, Your Sailing Instructor

Paramour Sailing was born from the love of sailing and is driven by a passion for sharing that love with others. Paramour Sailing is the top sailing school in Kansas City and the surrounding areas, and is the fulfillment of Paul Barnett’s lifelong dream of opening a local sailing school. Paul has shared his knowledge and skills with hundreds of students over the past three decades.

Paul boasts a wall full of regatta trophies, hard won through competitive sailing over the years. While he cut his teeth in the scrappy world of small boat sailing, for the past decade he has been more focused on sharing his knowledge and expertise using larger keel boats at the Perry Yacht Club on Lake Perry. 

Sail Education: Paul has taught students of all ages from 8 to 88. He is proud to have overseen the certification of hundreds of students as American Sailing Association Keel Boat Sailors, preparing them to take on coastal and offshore challenges. Many of his students have also advanced to their ASA Bareboat Certification, which allows them to captain sailboats all around the world.

Lori, his wife, is Paul’s greatest love- but teaching sailing is his other love, his Paramour.

Intro to Sailing Class for Beginners

Designed to introduce beginning and inexperienced sailors to the basics of sailing on a mid-sized boat.

Six-hour day of sail instruction, which includes both outdoor classroom and on-the-water experience.

Small class size of no more than 4 participants.

Ideal for those who have never sailed, want to brush up on their skills, or complete the prerequisite for the American Sailing Association Basic Keel-boat Certifications.

Practice basic sailing skills, safety, weather, and learn advanced sailing techniques.

‘ChampionShip’ Chiefs-themed yacht to anchor team’s fan activities in Frankfurt, Germany

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Auf geht's, Chiefs! Gewinnt einen weiteren Super Bowl.

One month before the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Nov. 5, in Frankfurt, Germany, the club announced plans to dock the “ChampionShip” near a famed landmark.

The ChampionShip — a custom-wrapped, Chiefs-themed yacht — will make its way to Frankfurt from Arnhem, Belgium, with plans to dock it on the banks of the Main River near Frankfurt’s Eiserner Steg, or Iron Footbridge, on Nov. 1.

The boat — which is 76 meters long, 10 meters wide and can carry up to 500 people — will serve as the “central hub of activity and entertainment throughout the club’s stay in Germany,” the team said in a release.

The boat will be open to the public Nov. 3-4. It will also host private VIP events and a rally for season-ticket members throughout the weekend, culminating with a game-day watch party.

Tickets will go on sale at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, for some of those team activations.

“With just one month to go before we play the Dolphins in Frankfurt, the excitement inside our building and throughout the fanbase couldn’t be higher,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said in a statement. “We believe the fans of Chiefs Kingdom are the best in the world. Their commitment to our team is relentless, and their sense of community is unmatched. We have the opportunity to share these values with the people of Frankfurt, throughout the DACH region and on the international stage next month. We look forward to welcoming all fans to experience the history and traditions of the club while sharing in the excitement, passion and joy that exists within Chiefs Kingdom.”

Fans aboard the ChampionShip will have an NFL Draft-style photo opp with a Chiefs jersey and a photo opp catching a pass in addition to replicas of player lockers and the press-conference podium experience.

The team also plans to take the Lombardi Trophy for winning Super Bowl LVII, giving fans a chance to snap a pic with the hardware.

The Chiefs also will have a mini Hall of Honor set up on the boat.

For those unable to get tickets, there will be free activities and specialized merchandise available only in-person on the dock near the boat.

Two Chiefs Ring of Honor inductees, running back Christian Okoye and wide receiver Dante Hall, will participate in the ChampionShip hoopla.

Okoye played in the American Bowl, an exhibition between the Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams, during the preseason in 1990, while Hall played one season for the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe in 2001.

The Chiefs Cheerleaders, KC Wolf and other Chiefs Legends will take part in community events, including a visit to RTL Kinderhaus (Children’s House), and events for military families through the USO Kaiserslautern.

Kansas City is one of a handful of NFL teams with marketing rights in Germany. The Chiefs also have marketing rights in Mexico, Austria and Switzerland.

This will be the franchise’s third regular-season game overseas, including a 45-10 win against Detroit in London in 2015 and a 24-17 win against the Los Angeles Chargers in Mexico City in 2019.

The Chiefs also played four international preseason games — Germany in 1990, Tokyo in 1994 and 1998 and Mexico in 1996.

Kansas City versus Miami will be the first NFL game played in Frankfurt.
