Amels / Damen SeaXplorer (Expedition Yacht 55 - 100m)

Damen (the mother company of amels ) presents a concept of a massive designed expedition ice class yacht called seaxplorer - a luxury suv for the seven seas..

Damen is normally the part of commercial ships, the Yacht Support Vessels and the mother company of AMELS. Now they unveiled this explorer yacht with an impressive vertical bow. The yacht concepts are available in the sizes of 55m , 65m, 77m (LA DATCHA) , 90m and 100m. All versions can carry helicopter(s), submarine(s) and various tenders.

The yacht range has ice-class up to class 6 to break 90 cm first-year ice. The yacht uses its stern to break the ice to keep comfort and performance at a maximum.

Damen SeaXplorer

Rob Lujiendijk – CEO of AMELS says

“A number of experienced yachting clients approached us about adapting DAMEN’s professional vessels, so we knew from them that there were simply no globally capable luxury explorer yachts out there. And that’s also what we heard from EYOS Expeditions who have decades of experience in bespoke luxury expeditions to the wildest places on the planet. So that’s why DAMEN began developing the SeaXplorer. The result is well beyond a pretty rendering. It’s a fully developed range – something only DAMEN could do.”

Although SeaXplorer looks heavy, massive and bold, inside will be the pure luxury for journeys with maximum comfort.

55m SeaXplorer

Update September 27, 2017: Damen presents plans for a 55m version.

“With a SeaXplorer 75 and a SeaXplorer 65 from our range already sold and now under construction, this new design benefits from our dedicated SeaXplorer team’s experience and the input from our clients and partners. The SeaXplorer 55 will be at home just as much in the South of France as it is in South Georgia Island.”

Damen SeaXplorer

Product Director Mark Vermeulen :

“The SeaXplorer 55 is a luxury yacht with real go-anywhere, do-anything expedition pedigree. It has the seakeeping performance and Ice Class capability, but we also offer lots of options for our clients – from full fairing and custom interiors to tailor-made configurations for their expedition equipment.”

77m Version (LA DATCHA)

Update August 15, 2017: Damen announced the sale of a 77m version with a hangar for two helicopters protected from the elements.

“Together with his guests, our client plans to visit some of the most beautiful and remote areas of the world,” c omments Commercial Director Rose Damen . “They will be skiing and snowboarding on pristine slopes like Kamchatka and submersible diving and sports fishing in Papua New Guinea and the Galápagos Islands. They will be in places with no supporting infrastructure, no roads and no heliports within range. So we designed the SeaXplorer 77 to carry out such complex operations with the highest level of safety, redundancy and autonomy.”

“Our designs in the SeaXplorer range are a great starting point to quickly create customized yachts for specific Owner requirements,” comments Mark Vermeulen, DAMEN Product Director . “The SeaXplorer 77 shares the range’s core attributes: compliance with the IMO Polar Code, the long periods of autonomy at sea, and the crossover of superyacht luxury with professional capability.”

Expedition Yachts for Sale

expedition yachts for sale

For anyone looking for expedition yachts for sale, these are a quickly-growing market in the yachting world, as increasing numbers of yacht owners choose to get off the beaten track and indulge in some remote cruising! Here is the full current selection of all expedition yachts for sale worldwide with photos and full specifications for each.

Expedition yachts, often called explorer yachts, are extremely versatile. As much at home in the wilds of Alaska as sitting pretty in the glamorous port of Monaco, expedition yachts are built to cross the world’s oceans while offering the extraordinary comfort of a luxury yacht.

The explorer vessel featured above, LEGEND Expedition Yacht For Sale, is a 254-foot or 77m Icon Expedition yacht available for sale. She is the only ice breaking mega yacht in the world. The proven world cruiser features a panorama Jacuzzi on the main deck, large sales throughout, welcoming cocktail bars, Movie theaters, Exclusive Balinese Spa (pictured below) and a gym.

Expedition yachts for sale are also becoming increasingly common options for new-build construction projects, but there are also many existing expedition yachts that have been converted from commercial vessels. As such, often expedition yachts for sale have wonderful histories as research ships, hospital ships, ice-breakers, trawlers and military vessels, and are now enjoying their latest incarnation as impressive luxury yachts.

Often sporting a more functional exterior, the interior of explorer vessels are as palatial and luxurious as their traditional superyacht counterparts. Expedition-style yachts tend to have a wider beam, thereby offering more volume for larger cabins and interior spaces. The yacht’s generous interior spaces are designed for live-aboard comfort for extended periods, and many of these yachts will have living quarters or suites for the owners, rather than smaller cabins.

Outside you’ll find generous open decks with elegant dining and entertaining spaces, with all the luxuries you’d expect on a superyacht.  Jacuzzis, helipads and observation decks are common features found on expedition yachts for sale.

Expedition yachts are sometimes nicknamed ‘toy carriers’, as they have plenty of space to carry the tenders and water sports equipment you’ll want as you cruise exotic places. Explorer yachts for sale often carry crew who are trained as instructors, so you might learn diving, jetski, kitesurfing or even photography while cruising the South Pacific or the Galapagos.

Because they’re built as sturdy ocean-going vessels, expedition yachts are built with a strong focus on safety, self-sufficiency and comfort underway. Some expedition yachts have reinforced ice-breaker hulls for exciting Arctic expeditions, and all have modern stabilization technology and state-of-the-art safety systems. Expedition yachts are built with large fuel tanks giving them exceptional range, while onboard water-makers and excellent cold and dry storage allows them to make long sea voyages without needing to stop for supplies. Because they are built to be away from port for long periods, expedition yachts normally carry the best in communication, entertainment and Wi-Fi capabilities.

One of Icon Yachts ’s most ambitious projects to date is finally nearing completion. After 21 months of hard work, the Netherlands -based company’s attempt to turn an icebreaker into a luxury yacht has entered its final stages.

Dubbed Project Ragnar , the conversion will see the company turn Sanaborg , a former icebreaking multipurpose support supply vessel, into a 224-foot luxury explorer yacht. And now, after nearly two years of construction, Boat International reports that the final outfitting works are underway on the boat’s exterior, while craftsmen have been brought in to give the interior a luxury makeover.

  • Mike Tyson’s Former Range Rover Limo Is Heading to Auction

Originally built from a steel hull back in 2012, the boat formerly known as Snaborg has an exterior and interior designed by British design studio RWD . Despite its smooth and modern lines, the yacht’s design references traditional British and medieval warships. When complete, the refurbished boat will have a Class A1 hull, making it ideal for global exploration, especially in high latitude water. It will be powered by two PC5 diesel-electric, pod-drive engines giving it a cruising range of 6,000 nautical miles.

“Originally built to confront rough weather conditions, she actually has a surplus of power,” Icon previously said of the yacht . “She is strong as a rhino disguised as a swan.”

Fully LY3 compliant, Project Ragnar will offer eight cabins, including two owner’s suites, and will be able to house up to 16 guests. While Icon has yet to release a full list of luxury amenities, the boat will have a spa with a massage room and snow room, along with a pool and jacuzzi. It will also include an aft helipad and a toy storage area with room for a Luxury Ripsaw EV2, Eurocopter EC145 helicopter, two 26-foot tenders, a sea explorer submarine and two laser sailing boats.

Entering this stage of the conversion means that the boat is almost ready to hit the water. “The pre-commissioning of the technical and propulsion installations has started, making sure the vessel will perform to its peak performance,” the company told Boat International . Project Ragnar is scheduled to enter the testing phase early next year.

Icebreaker Yachts: Travel to the Ends of the Earth in Style

Charter yachts give passengers complete reign over the open seas, allowing them to sail to gorgeous tropical destinations in comfort and style. But for more daring sailors, roaming familiar waters fails to satisfy their cravings for excitement and adventure. Boating enthusiasts from all over the world, seeking thrills and awe-inspiring journeys, have been recently chartering Icebreaker Yachts. These vessels can safely transport passengers to the pristine Arctic Circle or the majestic Antarctic without sacrificing the coziness of home.

Sailing to higher latitudes, where arctic creatures drift and abound, requires a hardier vessel, capable of plowing through chunks of ice while navigating rougher seas. The following expedition yachts are masterful products of nautical engineering. They can not only glide through frigid waters with grace and ease but also shield sailors from the harshness of the arctic environment, providing exclusive adventures—all in the lap of luxury.

Measuring at an impressive 252 feet in length, La Datcha is a jaw-dropping vessel, with a six-level deck and enough space for 12 passengers. But that’s not all: the expansive boat has a helicopter hangar, so that sailors can take flight and catch a bird’s eye view of the vast ocean and Arctic landscape. Due to its state-of-the-art garbage management system and economical use of energy, La Datcha can stay out at sea for 40 days, and its onboard sauna, gym, and beautiful construction by Amels and Damen will make passengers never want to disembark. There is even a massage room, where mariners can pamper themselves after a day of sightseeing. This sleek vessel is the height of luxury, making Arctic and Antarctic exploration a glamorous affair.

Massive and majestic, spacious and stylish, the Ragnar cuts through blocks of ice like tissue paper, providing unparalleled access to pristine seas. Boasting an impressive 6,000 nautical-mile range, this boat takes passengers on lengthy voyages through magnificent seascapes and comes equipped with innovative zero speed stabilizers. This feature prevents rolling motions while the ship is at anchor, making for a smooth trip, free of seasickness. The vessel is also replete with an optional submersible, snowmobiles, and jet skis for exploring the Arctic wilderness, and its lavish suites make for relaxing spaces to decompress. Also equipped with a helipad, the Ragnar succeeds in providing amazing adventures by air and sea; a trip on this vessel is a seasoned boater’s dream come true.

Legend is unlike any of the other Icebreaker Yachts, not only because of its sturdy construction and massive size but also because it is made from a renovated Soviet vessel. The vintage details of this ship are one-of-a-kind, an unfurling wonder of craftsmanship; those onboard can spend weeks uncovering surprise features—relics of times gone by. With 100 tons of steel and aluminum added to its frame, this vessel is home to sleek interior designs that pay homage to its Soviet past. Passengers can relax in the posh, ventilated cigar room, or take a dip in the spa pool, which contains a soothing waterfall. In the evening, they can chat with friends and crewmen in the whisky bar, or any of the other VIP lounges and spaces onboard. Legend lives up to its name, taking seafarers on unforgettable, legendary voyages to the ends of the Earth.

Designed by Norwegian superyacht icon Espen Oeino, Cloudbreak is a top-of-the-line vessel, built for speed and inspiring Arctic expeditions. The ship can reach cruising speed of 12 knots, and passengers enjoy roomy interiors resembling a ski chalet, interiors envisioned by revered French designer Christian Liaigre. In addition to a cozy fireplace, the floors of various living spaces have heaters underneath, keeping passengers’ feet warm as they venture through colder climates. Throughout the ship, travelers will find a fully equipped gym, jacuzzis, a beach club, and a stunning observation deck. Another favorite feature is the outdoor sleeping space, which is perfect for stargazing or reclining in the open air. When it comes to sumptuous seafaring, Cloudbreak is transcendent, offering high-class sailing on the high seas.

Dear Amanda, We're currently making the crossing from South Georgia to Ushuaia and will be closing out our charter at the end of the week. It's been exceptionally successful all around. The weather has been remarkably steady and friendly and we haven't had any really bumby rides. A day or so each way to/frum South Georgia but with 2-3 meter seas at worst. Best of all this has been the perfect boat and crew. Well found and well equipped, and each and every member of the crew and expedition leaders have gone out of their way to make it the most enjoyable and adventuresome experience. High praise indeed to Captain Martin! Thanks for your own great help all around. I'v had many charters with agents over the years - none better than this one reflecting your advice and support! The owner of Tinkoff Bank revealed his plans to build an icebreaker-yacht to Forbes magazine in a July 2018 interview.

“I want to build an icebreaker to travel to the North Pole, the Antarctic, the Arctic and traverse the Northern Sea Route to Kamchatka, Chukotka and the Kuril Islands,” Tinkov said back then.

In March 2020, the businessman reported contracting leukemia, and later in June - covid-19, which he successfully beat. Despite his health issues, construction was finished as planned after two years and more than $2.5 billion in costs, according to the Yacht Harbour website, citing Forbes. ‘Damen Yachting’ handled the construction.

On July 3, 2020, Tinkov’s yacht, dubbed the ‘La Datcha’, was reportedly launched into the water in Vlissingen, Netherlands.

The icebreaker-yacht is capable of braving ice 30-40 cm in thickness while out at sea for 40 days at a time. The vessel boasts two jacuzzis, a sauna, a steam bath, a massage room and a gym. For lovers of active vacations, there’s a helipad with two helicopters thrown in, as well as snowmobiles and - wait for it - a mini submarine!

The yacht can comfortably accommodate 25 crew and 12 guests. There are six staterooms, including two VIP offerings, equipped with private facilities and walk-in closets.

The ‘La Datcha’ has its own website and offers the yacht up for rent at €740,000 per week, with a 30 percent upfront deposit (APA). Tinkov himself plans to spend up to 20 weeks a year aboard the vessel, so plan wisely!

Icon Yachts will convert an icebreaker into a luxury yacht

ice breaker yacht

Codename Project Ragnar

ice breaker yacht

Dutch yard Icon Yachts has a plan to convert a 68m icebreaker named Sanaborg into a luxury explorer yacht. The project is called Ragnar.

Sanaborg was built in 2012 from a steel hull and will receive an extreme makeover. The interior and exterior styling will be the work of British design studio RWD.

The conversion started in the summer of 2017 and it's due for completion in 2019. Project Ragnar will keep the Ice Class A1 hull, making the yacht ideal for exploring in freezing areas.

The explorer yacht will have accommodation for 16 guests in eight double cabins, including two owner's suites. On the amenities list there is a spa, massage room, and a Jacuzzi.

A large garage is available for all kind of toys, including a Ripsaw EV2 ATV, a Sea explorer submarine, two jet skis, a couple of RIBS and two eight metre tenders. The certified helipad will carry a Eurocopter EC 145.

Power for Project Ragnar is provided by two PC5 diesel electric pod-drive engines. Cruising range will be a world-exploring 6,000 nautical miles.

Inspiration

ice breaker yacht

Fruit of a collaboration with the shipowners Abeking & Rasmussen, Espen Oeino and Liaigre, Cloudbreak is a remarkable declaration of style that reinvents traditional yachting codes.

Designed to combine performance and top sailing comfort, the boat delivered in 2016 is a 73m long yacht, to « explore » exceptional, far away countries .

ice breaker yacht

In order to satisfy the owner’s two passions which are heli-ski and surf, the Cloudbreak was designed to reach unusual places in the world.

Through its design and expedition equipment, it allows its guests to sail all over the globe, specifications Liaigre had to match by organising the space and creating ambiances that aim for very different sensations and vibrations. For the boat’s interior, Liaigre chose its distinctive range of colors that please clients : a variation of light, natural shades, rhythmed with darker breaths, cosy.

ice breaker yacht

A perfect example of the motto that could be Liaigre’s, « UTILITAS-VENUSTAS-FIRMITAS » (functional – beautiful – resistant), Cloudbreak was awarded several prizes in 2017 for its exterior and interior design.

The US military doesn't have the icebreakers to compete in the Arctic and is 'severely outnumbered' by Russia, commander warns

  • The US is falling behind Russia in the number of icebreaker ships available for Arctic operations.
  • NORTHCOM commander Gen. Guillot warns of limited maneuverability in the region due to an icebreaker 'gap.'
  • Amid growing foreign threats, the US has been increasingly investing in Arctic training.

Insider Today

The US does not have enough icebreaker ships to compete in the Arctic the way Russia can with its much larger fleet, a US military commander warned.

US Air Force Gen. Gregory M. Guillot, the commander of US Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command, said on Thursday that the US currently has really only one heavy icebreaker ship for Arctic operations while Russia has approximately 40 available.

"We do appreciate that the Coast Guard is procuring more icebreakers, but even with those, we will be severely outnumbered," Gen. Guillot said during a US Committee on Armed Services hearing. "That does limit our freedom of maneuver in that region."

Icebreaker ships are special-purpose vessels designed with a stronger hull, a very specific shape, and greater power to effectively break through thick ice blocking access to strategic waterways and clear paths for other ships .

The one available heavy US icebreaker is the USCGC Polar Star , and then there is the medium icebreaker Healy . Another vessel has been out of action for years.

Related stories

Maine Sen. Angus King expressed concerns during the hearing Thursday about the icebreaker "gap" or deficit and urged that the US military not wait to build up defenses in the Arctic as Russia increases its own military presence in the region.

To the senator, not having sufficient icebreakers is unproductive, like "not having a road to get where you need to get."

Russia has deployed nuclear-powered icebreakers called Arktika and Sibir, which have been characterized as the largest and strongest icebreaker ships in the world.

This isn't the first time alarms have sounded over the lack of icebreakers. Last fall, the US had a noticeable icebreaker gap, and lawmakers determined that investing in the Coast Guard is crucial for maintaining momentum in the Arctic.

"We need to make sure that we are trying to close a very very significant icebreaker gap , Alaska Sen. Dan Sullivan said at the time. "Even China's icebreaker capacity is on pace to surpass ours in 2025," he said, "and they are not even an Arctic nation."

For more than 20 years, the Coast Guard has been asking for funds for the Arctic, but those requests have been deferred, US Coast Guard Vice Admiral Peter W. Gautier said last year. Now, conversations around Arctic militarization are being discussed amid proposals for the 2025 fiscal year budget.

In addition to Russia becoming more active, China has also shared Arctic aspirations.

With growing threats in this region, the US military has been increasingly looking at Arctic training. US Navy SEALs, for instance, recently conducted training operations deep in the Arctic, and the Army just recently wrapped a large-scale training exercise in Alaska to prepare soldiers for war in challenging environments and sub-zero temperatures.

Ice Breaker – Yacht

Each week on The Stretched Blog, I ask an ice breaker question. The questions are designed to help us get to know each other here in The Stretched Community. I’ll provide my answer to the question here in the post, and then you can leave your response in the comments. While you’re in the comments section, see how others answered the ice breaker question.

(I’m always looking for Ice Breaker question ideas.  If you have an idea, send me an email at [email protected] .  If I use your question, I’ll give you credit and share your links.)

Question:  If you had a yacht, what would you name it?

My Answer:  Stretch seems like the obvious choice.  If I followed the pattern of my recent blog posts about having a mission mindset, you might think I should go with On A Mission.  I like the name Hope Floats.  I never saw the movie, but I think the name sounds “uplifting.”

Answer this week’s ice breaker question by leaving a comment.  I look forward to reading your response! (As always, feel free to share links.) And keep Stretching!
