The all-new 40-metre motor yacht FPB 130 represents the latest and the largest ever design unveiled by Steve Dashew . Boasting maximum reliability and minimum maintenance, superyacht FPB 130 concept reduces crew requirement, while expanding where, when, as well as how comfortably you can cruise.

We have asked Steve Dashew about the inspiration behind this design: “ As to the inspiration, the FPB 130 is simply an evolution from the four FPB designs that preceded her .”

In terms of a sea kindly efficient hull form, attention to detail, as well as systems engineering, super yacht FPB130 sets the bar even higher than the four FPB yachts that preceded her.

Launched last year, the Dashew FPB97 motor yacht Iceberg illustrates what is possible in a larger FPB form. She can reach an 11,8-knot cruising speed at 60 liters per hour from a range in excess of 4000 NM, has a six kW solar array, and her owners need only a couple as crew. Three FPB 78 yachts are currently in build, all for prior FPB owners.

As with all FPBs, the all-new FPB 130 yacht has been designed with a double bottom for maximum structural security and massive tankage.

Thanks to her twin 675 HP diesels, super yacht FPB 130 can achieve a top speed of 16,5 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots at 40% engine load. Shallow 1,65-metre draft, mixed up with the ability to dry out in areas of moderate tides, give this highly innovative vessel a unique cruising capability.

In response to our question as to what superyacht charter destinations would the new FPB 130 yacht suitable for, Steve Dashew replied:   “The answer is easy: where other charter yachts don’t go. Think Svalbard and the ice pack at 80 degrees north,  Greenland’s Disco Bay, or the South Georgia islands on the way to Antarctica . If you prefer warmer weather, then how about wreck diving on Keeling atoll in the Indian Ocean .”

Sundeer 56/60 review: super offshore sailing machine.

Steve and Linda Dashew started out in 1978 with the 68′ Deerfoot. This was the first design with a molded swim platform. Their goal was and still is to build the optimal offshore boat. They followed with a range of Deerfoot designs. Then they made a switch in the 1990’s to their second evolution, Sundeer. One of these designs, the 60′ Sundeer (also shortened to be the 56-footer) would become a production fiberglass yacht built by Tillotson Pearson Industrial Composites or TPI for short in Warren, Rhode Island. They produced seventeen of the 56/60 Sundeers from 1994 to 1997. The Dashews moved onto their Beowolf and Godspeed designs in the late 1990’s. Today, they are focusing a a FPB series of circumnavigable poweryachts including their test bed, Windhorse. Sundeers distinguish themselves by being narrower (4.9 length to beam ratio), very fine entries (14 degrees from centerline), and larger mainsails than other offshore yachts. These changes give them additional waterline length and increase passagemaking speeds as the Sundeer 60’s for instance regularly average over 200 nautical miles a day offshore. Dashew says that the 60 is the “most efficient 2 person cruising boat we could conceive.”

First Impressions Sundeers have an extreme masculinity and look like they ought to built out of some rough and tough material like steel or aluminum. The edges are angular like the swim platform that is cut off straight aftmost. The three portlights in the topsides are distinctively large, menacing, and squarish. Starting forward the bow is cut-off straight with hardly an overhang tough bowsprit provides anchor clearance. The plumb bow goes with the Dashew theory of a no nonsense offshore boat. The bow is fine with absolutely no flair to cut deep through waves upwind. The straight slightly uplifting sheer runs to the aft cockpit and swim platform arrangement. The beam stays wide aft. With her 4.9 length to beam ratio, the narrow hull shape allows her to surf down waves. The cabintrunk hides slanting quickly into the cockpit combings. Some 56/60’s have pilothouses or hard dodger arrangements. Her sloop rig makes room for a large mainsail and flexible foresail area. She features a 64′ raked, double spreader mast. The underbody is balanced up to 20% heeling and leads to a soft, comfortable motion. Her keel can be of different arrangements but standard is 6′ fin paired with a shorter rudder and long, skinny skeg. The prop comes out close to the skeg on a steep angle.

Construction One good part about Dashew is the plethora of information. They are prolific publishers of books including the bible of offshore sailing, the Dashew Offshore Handbook, and numerous videos. The Dashews both have strong, stable opinions. The builder was Tillotson Pearson Industrial Composites whose co-founder Clinton Pearson helped found Pearson Yachts in the 1950’s, maybe the first fiberglass production builder. The company is world renown for its innovative and advanced molding techniques and composes everything from sailboats to wind turbines. They were one of the few users of SCRIMP technology in the mid 1990’s. This technique uses a vaccum bagging and resin injection to avoid secondary bonding. TPI used vinylester resin with a mix of quadriaxial, biaxial, unidirectional fiberglass with end grain balsa coring. The gel coats for the deck are hull were white though other colors were possible. TPI gave a 10 year blister free warranty. The hull structure was built to ABS standards. Heavy scantlings including keel floors of 18″ center stiffen her. An aluminum mast step bolts on to the floors. The 56/60’s have two watertight bulkheads one each to square off the forepeek and engine room areas. These along with the main bulkhead are balsa cored. The hull deck joint is of the standard flange glued by 3M’s 5200 and bolted at 4″ centers with the aluminum toerail. The keel is an external lead piece bolted to the fiberglass keel stub. A swim platform is glassed on the transom.

On Deck and Down Below Up forward, she has a bow chock for dual anchors. The watertight anchor bin is below the electric windlass. This is a narrow foredeck with the fine bow that is meant to slice through oncoming seas. There can be a cutter stay here. There are numerous dorades molded in which the Dashews say provides enough ventilation to avoid the need for air conditioning in most climates. Their philosophy avoids generators, air conditioning, and mast furling. Aftmost is the cockit. The beefy ground tackle is by Lewmar. A lazarette aftmost provides access to the engine room behind the aft watertight bulkhead. There is only a single through-hole in the whole boat to provide hull integrity. The aft cockpit has long seating to lie down on and nice width and height. They have sailed enough to know the importance of cockpit ergonomics.

The narrowness of the hull makes this a rather distinctively different interior. Although 60-feet in length, the 56/60 was meant with a cruising couple in mind. The layout is only a two stateroom boat with the cockpit and portside cabin aft arrangement. Forwardmost is a master suite with a centerline queen that is common on Dashew designs since the Deerfoots. The open saloon and “C” shaped galley is next. Aft starboardside is the single head with shower.

Engine and Underway Behind a watertight bulkhead aft is the engine room. This is a interesting and very safe idea also seen on the big MacGregor 65’s, another narrow long waterline design. The idea is to separate the danger of sinking from a failed hose or shaft leak. Access is through a lazarette, and there is posible access from the aft cabin. Common are the now discontinued 88 HP Yanmars while the earliest had a 77 HP Yanmar.

The prime focus of the Sundeers is a great circumnavigating sailboat for two people. The 56/60 is known to clip off 200 plus miles a day. This is because of an efficient hull shape, i.e. long waterline, and easy to handle sail plan. The larger main but not too much canvas can be easily managed at pretty good efficiency by one person. All lines run into the aft cockpit for this purpose. The fine bow inhibits any tendency to pound up wind, and the narrow beam increases buoyancy forward to surf downwind without plunging the bow.

Conclusion The Sundeer 56/60 line by TPI and Dashew Offshore is an strongly built, well though-out passagemaker for those who dream to sail around the world. Her masculinity, rawness, and narrow beam give her a distinctive style. Great support is available as the Dashews continue to try out innovative ideas and have produced wide array of books, pamphlets, and videos to explain their philosophy and boats that envelope it. Originally retailing at $277,000 in 1993 for sailaway, a sign of their value is the brokerage prices of around a half a million.

On single handed passage from Balboa, CZ to Honokohau, HI on my Sundeer 60 after having crossed up into the NE trades I made about 210 miles per day for 8 days without touching the helm.   The wind was on the starboard quarter, 15-18 knots gusts to 20.  Sea 8-12 ft; swell NW 1-2 ft.  Just good steady trades.

This kind of sailing spoils you for the rest of your sailing life.

Sent from my iPad

As a 12 year owner of a 56 there are a few mistakes here. Firstly there is no skeg and the rudders are BIG, secondly the standard anchor arrangement is for a single over-sized anchor, normally a 110llb Bruce and the windlass is a Maxwell from New Zealand. GM

G, Thanks for the corrections. You’d know far more than me about the 56, so feel free to chime in anytime. Happy 2012, R Sent from my iPad

Also noted, the price. Dashew worked hard to get a headline grabbing price for the boats but this was absolutely basic with e.g. no equipment, no cushions for berths and none of the interior woodwork varnished. It was never a sail away price. In reality they were almost double the base price. My receipt for the delivered yacht from TPI was in the mid 600s in 1996.

FPB 83, WIND HORSE

Dashew Offshore, FPB 83 Built 2005 / US$3,750,000, US Duty Paid

FPB 83, WIND HORSE 1 Main

Broker’s Comments

FPB 83-1, WIND HORSE is an iconic go anywhere long-distance explorer yacht. The first of the FPBs (functional powerboats), she was designed by Steve and Linda Dashew and built by them for their own use. The replacement for their 80 foot ketch BEOWULF, around 2 years of research and development went into the design of WIND HORSE which was to be their ‘un-sailboat’ … A motor boat with speed, range, sea kindliness, comfort, recovery from capsize and with a motion that would be easy on the crew during long passages. WIND HORSE delivered on all these points whilst Steve and Linda put around 60,000 nautical miles beneath her keel. From their experience with this extraordinary boat, the FPB fleet became flesh.

WIND HORSE was fitted out by Kelly Archer from New Zealand. Her interior is executed in high gloss Burmese teak and with high gloss teak floorboards. Today it would be difficult to find the timber and the standard of craftsmanship in all areas is outstanding.

She is easily managed by two people, yet she has comfortable accommodation for a total of six. Her layout provides for the signature ‘Great Room’ deck saloon with a large galley, comfortable seating and helm station. With her large deck saloon windows of tempered glass, there is 360-degree vision. Forward is a large owners’ stateroom and aft two comfortable guest cabins with access into the engine room aft. This is spacious, well laid out and very easy to work in.

She has chequer plate decks and good stowage for two dinghies and a small matrix deck or flybridge.

In her current ownership, she has been carefully maintained and her systems updated as is needed. She is a handsome and purposeful boat that is ready for many more oceans with her new owners.

Designer’s Comments

When Linda and I decided to design and build WIND HORSE, we were looking for a way to keep cruising on our own as we “matured”. Although we missed the challenge of sailing, WIND HORSE was so easy for us to run as a couple and so comfortable at sea that we cruised more than 60,000nm in just seven years of part-time cruising. From the beautiful atolls of the South Pacific to the spectacular scenery and wildlife of Svalbard, past 80 degrees North latitude and into the ice pack, WIND HORSE opened a new world of opportunities for us.

The bare aluminum exterior with its military/commercial look opened doors that would have been closed to a typical shiny in your face motor yacht. This disguise hid an exquisite interior, crafted by New Zealand’s finest carpenters, from golden Burmese teak. That timber was difficult to source and required over three thousand man-hours to finish in high gloss. Moreover, it gave us immense pleasure. What we loved most about WIND HORSE was the flexibility she gave us. Take for example early January 2008; with no firm plans, we were kicking around destinations when the idea of Greenland surfaced. From Southern California at first, it sounded far-fetched. Eight months of comfortable cruising later WIND HORSE had taken us non-stop to Panama from Southern California, through the Bahamas, then to Canada, up the Straights of Belle Isle and in less than three days to Greenland. After Greenland, we decided to visit the British Isles where we ended up at Berthon for winter storage.

We will always have a soft spot in our hearts for WIND HORSE. She was truly our magic carpet.

SPECIFICATIONS

This listing has sold. To check if it, or a sistership, has come back on the market, please call us.

BEOWULF was designed to be sailed by a couple without the need of extra crew. She is a remarkably stiff, comfortable and a fast passage maker. In moderate trades, with the wind from a close to broad reach, she will easily and comfortably average 300 miles per day. She is designed to travel 230 - 300 miles per day under sail. Typically, the boat moves at 85% - 95% of the wind speed with the small jib, main and mizzen. She has a simple, easy to use salt water ballast system which reduces heel by six to eight degrees and typically increases speed ten to fifteen percent. This vessel is fully fitted for extensive offshore work, has been shaken down and fine tuned, and is ready to head around the world after topping off her tanks and visiting the local market. The systems are functional, easy to use and require minimal maintenance. The interior is exquisitely executed by one of the finest boat builders world-wide for this size yacht, to the very highest standards and must be seen to be appreciated.

In Beowulf there are three staterooms, each with ensuite heads and a shared shower between aft guest cabins. From a single level flush deck, a door opens to the pilothouse which boasts 360 degree visibility. To port and starboard are full-length settees, suspended and with no side bulkheads, thus creating wonderful connection with the area below and a sense of spaciousness. These settees can also be used as voyaging bunks. Navigation instruments plus inside steering permit comfortable inclement weather sailing. Stairs lead down to a galley to port, and office/navigation to starboard, the salon forward. The galley leads aft to a guest stateroom with a double bunk and an ensuite head that, in turn, leads through to a huge walk-in engine room with totally accessible systems. On the starboard side the guest stateroom is a mirror image to that of the port side. The salon features a large table and L-shaped settee to port, and a settee to starboard. Forward is a door that opens to the full-width master stateroom with a large queen bed to port, settee and storage starboard. Forward of the bed is a separate shower/tub/toilet room with hanging lockers across to starboard. Beyond this is a large dressing area, walk in closet with sink and washer/dryer. On deck, a large table opens to accommodate 8 diners. Winches are within easy reach for hassle-free sailing. Non-skid aluminum industrial checker plate decks fore and aft while the sugar scoop transom adds safety and ease.

Dashew introduces new FPB 97 ocean cruising yacht

Size matters when owners want the freedom to cruise with or without crew, and the latest model in Steve Dashew's FPB line of ocean cruising yachts has been designed with this in mind.

'People continue to ask for an economical series-built FPB scaled to the maximum size a couple can operate together,' Dashew says. 'The Wicked FPB 97 is designed from the keel up to fulfill that mission.'

With a length of 29.9m, the new FPB 97 has the strongest structure ever offered in a production yacht, a range of over 5,000 nautical miles at 11.5 knots and a draught of only 1.5 metres. It also has fossil fuel independence at anchor, meaning a low carbon footprint.

Like her sisterships in the FPB series, the Wicked FPB 97 is designed for optimal comfort and safety, with proven sea-kindliness, unique heavy weather capabilities including recovery from capsize and robust systems engineered for minimum maintenance taken as a given.

But the FPB 97 has some design innovations too, most notably in her interior which features a 'Matrix Deck' - a cross between a fly bridge and penthouse - and a 'Grand Room' that combines living, working and entertaining spaces. Comfort and luxury are not compromised on the spacious accommodation deck either, where the 7.7m full-beam owners' suite has a walk-in wardrobe, en suite with shower, bathtub and sauna, and lounging space.

The FPB 97 represents a new take on luxury yacht ownership, offering independence, true reliability, ease of operation, a minimal carbon footprint and virtually unlimited options on where you can cruise.

'The FPB 97 reflects everything we’ve learned in 35 years of cruising and boat building, packaged with more comfort and luxury than was possible before, and gives her owners the freedom to travel with or without crew,' says Dashew.
