The XOD was originally designed in 1909 by Alfred Westmacott and most are still sailing today. Originally with a wooden gaff rig and asymmetric spinnaker this was altered in 1928 to the current spruce bermudan rig with the symmetric spinnaker being adopted in 1969. The class is very popular on the south coast with fleets in Parkstone, Yarmouth, Lymington, Hamble & Itchenor. They are regularly the largest one-design fleet at Cowes Week.

Welcome to the XOD renaissance
In 2012, the X One Design Class gave Nick Whittle and Isle of Wight-based Whittle Marine authorisation to commence building new XODs. After three years of preparation and meticulous planning, the new XOD is currently in-build at Whittle Marine’s facility outside Yarmouth on the West Wight.
‘The benefit of this new build is to show to the world that the X One Design fleet is not only alive and well, but that this new build represents a renaissance of the class,’ says Mike Till, XOD Class Captain. ‘This new boat will also demonstrate to everybody out there, not just the members of the class, but those interested in historical yachting and those wedded to the philosophy of traditional, classic boat building methods that Nick Whittle and Whittle Marine are well on their way to achieving this objective.’
With an estimated 110 to 130 XODs still sailing, is there a tangible demand for new boats? Till is convinced that new XODs are essential to the class and identifies the reason; running costs. ‘These boats go back to 1911, so they are in different states of condition,’ he explains. ‘Some are very good and some very old boats are in immaculate condition because their owners have spent a lot of money maintaining them in the traditional manner.’
Running costs among classic boat owners is a popular and endless debate. ‘The costs of maintaining a wooden boat are quite high because you are constantly fighting issues relating to wooden boats,’ Till continues. ‘Nowadays, with the advent of epoxy, the tenure of these boats has radically increased, especially those boats that are fully epoxied. So, that has reduced the costs, but it’s still a big issue.’
Despite modern polymers and resin, Till believes there are compelling reasons for a new build: ‘The argument put forward for a new boat is that although the cost of acquiring a new build will not be cheap, Nick’s argument, and one that I support, is that by investing that sort of money you will get a boat that – in all seriousness – will give you many years of trouble-free, maintenance-free sailing,’ says the Class Captain.
However, XODs are raced hard so there are consequences. ‘You will have to handle that, but in general terms, it will be a lot less than messing about with a boat that’s been around since 1935 or 1936, or whenever,’ he believes. ‘And I think that’s the biggest argument for marketing this boat quite apart from the obvious benefit to the XOD fleet.’
Naturally, there is some resistance to change: ‘Any class has a level of politics, so there are people out there who are always looking to find negatives, rather than positives,’ explains Till. ‘Nick’s not immune from that happening to him, but in general terms, we know he’s built this boat absolutely to the class rule and the class measurements,’ he continues. ‘He has invested a considerable amount of money in full laser measuring equipment which has enabled an accuracy of 100 per cent on all the lines and on that basis, I think he’s on to a winner.’
There is, of course, an element of risk. ‘The other issue that you’ve got with a new boat is if you’re buying from a builder who hasn’t got an established reputation as a builder, you are effectively taking a dive into deep water,’ says Till although, in mitigation, Whittle Marine has been heavily involved in XODs for many years with a growing reputation and, as a result, 30 XODs are scheduled for work in the yard this winter. The new build will be a landmark for the company.
This vital, unknown factor will remain unresolved until the boat is proven on the water and the current absence of a trophy-winning build pedigree at Whittle Marine may cause some initial resistance. ‘The sort of guy who is going to buy a new build and invest all that money in a first class boat is going to have XOD in his DNA and he’ll be 100 per cent dedicated to supporting the class with all his heart,’ explains Till.
The performance debate will be settled when the Whittle Marine XOD is launched in May 2017.
In the next Whittle Marine blog, Nick Whittle reveals the technical, financial and logistic challenges of building a new XOD.

X One Design
The X One Design (XOD) was designed in 1907 with the first boat launched in 1909. It is 21-foot ¾ decked keelboat of carvel construction. A very strong boat, several launched in 1911 are still racing today. The design has proved itself over the years allowing sailors of all ages, from teenagers to octogenarians to race with equal success. Gradually, over the years, modernisation has been approved with the biggest changes being Gaff to Bermuda rig and more recently the use of Epoxy being permitted. This has resulted in many of the earlier boats being rejuvenated, enabling them to match newer boats, not only for speed but also finish. With numbers nearing 200, and all the boats based between Poole and Itchenor, it is the strongest South Coast One Design class.
The cost of ownership is not high and, with epoxy coated hulls, maintenance can be minimal or as much as you like to spend. X's have always outlived their owners, unlike many modern racing yachts which in less than 10 years lose their competitiveness, mainly due to their light construction. The Class Association have published a new document "The X Factor" - click here for the electronic version.
Royal Lymington Yacht Club XOD Fleet
The Lymington XOD Fleet sails under the burgee of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club. The Harbour Authorities have established heritage moorings for the class on the East side of the river, an impressive sight for all. The racing is superb for all from gentle family sailors to Olympic hotshots.
The XOD is the largest keelboat racing fleet at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club with over 40 active boats. Racing is very competitive throughout the fleet. Our successful sailors are always willing to help those new to the class and those at the back of the fleet to find more speed. An XOD responds to finetuning and this tests everyone from time to time, even successful owners have days of "go slows".
Tea is organised after both Saturday and Wednesday afternoon racing where competitors and race officers get together in a friendly atmosphere.
Join our regular racing at Royal Lymington Yacht Club
The Royal Lymington Yacht Club has a full fixture list with racing for all every week. Boats from Yarmouth regularly join us to swell the number of boats coming to the start line. XODs race in our Spencers New Forest Thursday Evening Racing Series ; this is a very popular series and gives us all a chance of winding down with a good social get-together after the race. Find key dates in our Calendar or download printable 2023 XOD series calendar here .

Join the Lymington XOD Fleet!
The XOD fleet is keen to welcome new members of any age. Sharing is very successful and ensures better usage. Dinghy sailors thinking of moving on to a keel boat and still looking for competitive family sailing at a reasonable cost should try an XOD. If you would like to crew, please e-mail either Shaun Norris or Chris Hawes via the Club Office and provide details of your sailing experience and availability. They will either be able to introduce you straight away to a helm looking for crew or will keep your details and match them to any request they may receive later in the season to fill a vacancy.

43m Pershing fast motor yacht Chorusline for sale
The 43.3-metre fast motor yacht Chorusline is newly listed for sale with Charles Carveles of Edmiston .
Delivered from the renowned Italian builder of fast yachts, Pershing , in 2019, this Pershing 140 is constructed of aluminium and was fully repainted in 2023. Her design is by Fulvio De Simoni with interior by Italprojects and naval architecture by Ferretti Engineering Department.
Chorusline is described by the broker as "like new" as she has only ever been used as a dayboat and her beds never slept in.
Accommodation for a party of 10 guests is arranged over four cabins, comprising a master suite, a double cabin and two twins with additional Pullman berths. There are quarters for a crew of seven in four cabins.
Presently, the main-deck owner's suite is used as an entertainment space with a dining room, bar and cinema room, connected to the saloon. This could easily be converted back to a cabin, all the plumbing and infrastructure being in place. Textured wooden panelling adorns the interior bulkheads, contrasting with dark wooden flooring, while abstract chrome sculptures and green items of furniture give the spaces a sparkle.
Her expansive sundeck sports a Jacuzzi and sunpads forward, an al fresco dining area, bar and ample space to lounge about, all protected by an awning. At sea-level, the fold-down hull openings and large swim platform make for a spacious open-plan, teak-decked beach club from where water toys may be embarked, the whole area easily reached via twin transom staircases from the aft deck.
Four 2,600hp engines, with less than 700 hours on them, give the 380GT low-draft, yacht for sale a top speed of 38 knots and the ability to accelerate from rest to 35 knots in under a minute.
Cruising speed is 28 knots and she has a range of 1,400 nautical miles at 10 knots. Her inventory includes a four-metre tender, two paddle boards and brand new stand-up jet ski
Lying in Hong Kong, Chorusline is asking $21,500,000.
