Medics – Make the move to Yachting 25 August 2021
crew agency Medic Nurse Paramedic Superyacht Crew
Getting your first job onboard a superyacht is not just about having basic yachting qualifications or whether you know your bowline from your bow line, because today, nurses, medics and paramedics are in high demand.
And with attractive salaries, luxury cruising destinations and some amazing leave packages (not to mention all the incredible friendships you’ll create), anyone with a strong medical background should definitely consider swapping sirens and surgeries for a rewarding career at sea.
What kind of medical experience do I need?
If you’re currently working as a nurse or paramedic, or have perhaps been a medic in the military in a former life, the superyacht industry wants you.
Whilst the risks of being at sea are fairly low from a medical perspective (compared to the daily challenges faced by land-based superhero health professionals), accidents do happen and health issues do arise, and when you are potentially hundreds of miles offshore or in a remote location, it’s simply not safe to await air assistance.
Many superyacht owners and management companies recognise the need to improve the health services available onboard to ensure guests and crew feel safe at all times. For this reason, many of them are upping their requirements from basic STCW & ENG1 Medical qualifications to more detailed medical training.
Granted, you might spend the majority of your time dealing with small issues like blisters, cuts and general illnesses, but you’ll enjoy a varied role with the opportunity to make a real difference to the onboard environment and operation.
As well as being responsible for medical supplies, safety drills and first aid training, you may also be asked to assist with designing and implementing processes that further minimises potential instances that require medical assistance while at sea.
What else do I need to do?
Unlike the fast-paced and stressful environment in the emergency medical services, there won’t always be an emergency or health issue that needs your attention onboard. For this reason, paramedic and nurse roles are normally combined with deckhand and stewardess duties, giving you an excellent opportunity to learn new skills.
Interior duties include laundry, housekeeping and service, while deckhands are generally responsible for maintaining the exterior and associated activities like watersports. So you’ll need to ensure your ability to remain calm under pressure and work effectively as a team transitions seamlessly from your medical role to your stewardess or deckhand role.
Having a medical background, you’ll already set yourself apart from other green crew with no experience or secondary skills. Despite this, you’ll still need to invest in a STCW & ENG1 Medical, which will set you back around £800. But trust me, you’ll earn this back and some in your first wage packet!
No matter how amazing you are at your job shore-side, you’ll also be required to have the soft skills and personality type that will ensure you can enjoy a successful superyacht career, gel well with fellow crew and give owners and guests a great onboard experience.
To be able to work hard and live together, you must be:
- Presentable
- Considerate
- Level-headed
Check out our guide on how to get into yachting for more information.
What kind of yacht could medics join?
Think high-end prestigious and luxury yachts, over 50m in length, cruising worldwide destinations and catering for private guests or paying charter guests (which can also earn you hefty tips).
We also place nurses and paramedics on the growing number of new build superyachts coming out of some of the leading boat builders globally and even in land-based leisure roles like private islands.
The opportunities are endless and there are some fantastic opportunities for candidates with an excellent medical skillset, provided you have the right mindset.
So, are you a medic open to making the move to yachting? Do you want to travel, gain new skills, have awesome experiences and earn €3,500+ a month (possibly tax free and that’s at the lower end of the salary scale)?
I’d love to hear from you and would be happy to discuss current opportunities, how to tailor your CV for the yachting industry and what to expect.
I look forward to hearing from you all soon!

Yacht crew salary guide
A Nurse on board a superyacht is responsible for providing routine and emergency medical care to owners, guests and crew. The role is typically split between the nurse and Interior Department duties, namely housekeeping and laundry.
A yacht Nurse is a position typically found on superyachts over 50m in size. Generally speaking, the bigger the yacht, the bigger the medical department. For example, some yachts might have a dedicated SOLAS-approved hospital onboard and are equipped with an X-ray machine and a hyperbaric chamber. However, most yachts don’t have the luxury of a dedicated medical professional and positions such as a stewardess-nurse are far more common.
This means that the position often involves assistance from the housekeeping or service teams. Depending on the yacht owners’ health, you may be required to do certain medical duties, but otherwise, the role requires you to be on standby awaiting the need for medical attention.
Working onboard a superyacht as a Nurse requires a complete Nursing License. Usually, there are two Nurses working together onboard and sometimes a Doctor will be present on larger vessels. On average, medical facilities onboard a yacht are equipped with oxygen tanks, defibrillators, specialized medications and intravenous fluids.
What does a yacht Nurse do? | Yacht Nurse Job Description
A Nurse onboard a superyacht is primarily responsible for providing routine and emergency medical care, teaching CPR classes and performing fire and lifeboat drills. They also oversee and maintain the cleanliness of the medical facilities, keep all injury logs, and order and stock all of the medical inventory.
As a yacht Nurse, there may be instances where the yacht is miles away from the shore and a guest develops appendicitis or another condition. In this situation, it is up the Nurse to care for them until other help is available.
The responsibilities of a yacht Nurse include:
Doing physical exams
Assessing, observing, and speaking to patients
Providing emergency medical care
Administering medications and treatments, then monitoring patients for side effects and reactions
Teach CPR classes
Maintaining first-aid supplies and other inventory
Maintaining the cleanliness of the medical facilities
Keeping all injury logs
Regular refresher training and drills
Depending on the size of the yacht, you will also help the Interior Department with housekeeping and service
Soft and hard skills required to be a yacht Nurse
The role of a yacht Nurse is suited to someone who can successfully assess a medical situation by conducting a limited physical examination. As a guest-facing role, yacht Nurses converse regularly with owners and guests. Due to this, confidence and excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
Occasionally, the role may require you to be adaptable and care for an owner or guest with a specific medical condition, so someone who understands specific needs and can provide adequate care to the owner is also important.
The skills of a successful yacht Nurse include:
Knowledge to perform and evaluate diagnostic tests
Experience diagnosing illnesses and prescribing medications
Knowledge of preventive care strategies
Knowledge and experience of emergency medicine and care
Good interpersonal and communication skills
Critical thinking
Empathy
Ability to work independently
Ability to stay calm and collected in stressful situations
Mandatory certificates needed to work on board a yacht
All crew members regardless of position and seniority need to have a valid STCW Basic Safety Training certificate, along with a recognised Seafarers medical certificate, the most popular being the ENG1 which is issued by an MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) professional medic.
Without these two certificates, it is not possible for crew to work on board a yacht and a Recruiter will not be able to assist you in finding work onboard a yacht. For more information about mandatory certificates please visit our Mandatory Certificates Guide .

Superyachts seek medical personnel on board
A new service responds to the demand for medics, and highlights the concept of 'supernumeraries' under the mlc….
In response to increasing requests for temporary medical staffing on board superyachts, MedAire is offering a service providing short-term medical personnel placement. The company now places experienced doctors, nurses and paramedics, who remain under their employment, on yachts to ensure medical care is always available to those on board.
Through its parent company, International SOS, which works with many oil rigs located in remote sites, MedAire benefits from a large database of medical professionals familiar with working in remote environments available for placement.
“Many of our clients are looking for a short term medical staffing solution," explains Steven Bates, general manager of yachting for MedAire. "As clients are traveling to increasingly remote locations, may be engaging in high-adrenaline sports and riskier activities, or may have a guest that needs extra medical care, there is now the option to add a doctor or paramedic on board for a period of time."
Bates adds that this service has been of particular interest to 60m-plus superyachts intending on remote cruising, and to charter yachts that might have guests with specific medical conditions and wish to have a medical professional on board just in case. Another popular request is for paediatric nurses, which help take the responsibility off crew when there are children on board.
Such personnel will remain under MedAire employment throughout the duration of their placement. They are not involved in the operations or safety of the vessel so they are not classed as crew but as contractors – something that is particularly important to note for those yachts in compliance with the MLC 2006. Supernumeraries, such as short-term medical personnel, have continued to be a grey area under the regulations.
Paul Grace, technical policy lead at the Isle of Man Ship Registry explains that, when the MLC entered into force, the term ‘supernumerary’ became largely obsolete as it was assumed that everyone on a yacht would either be a seafarer or a guest. “This caused confusion within the industry, so to provide some clarity on the definition of ‘seafarer’, ILO published a resolution providing guidance on various occupational groups,” he says.
“The Resolution allows Flag States to write their own regulations, and introduced a new phrase for people who principally work onshore, but who occasionally spend a short period working on a ship; ‘occasional workers’. Some categories of personnel are self-evidently occasional workers, for example surveyors, superintendents and port workers. Other categories are more open to interpretation since there is no agreed definition of a ‘short period working on a ship’.”
In light of this, a medical specialist who has been contracted to a yacht for a short term charter lasting a few weeks would most likely be considered an occasional worker, however this would have to be confirmed with the yacht’s Flag State. “The Flag State may have additional requirements for occasional workers, such as ensuring the medical specialist receives familiarisation training, is medically fit and has a contract from his or her employer,” Grace adds.
Finally, Grace cautions that if the medical specialist was to work on a longer charter or a series of charters, they may become considered a seafarer instead of an occasional worker. “The operators would have to be aware of this prior to the medical specialist joining a ship as they would then have to be issued with a seafarer’s employment agreement and have the same entitlements as the other seafarers on the yacht, including accommodation,” he concludes.

Lucas Urruty Officer of the Watch (OOW) "I started yachting 7 years ago, from not knowing the industry at all to getting my first OOW position last year. I remember in the first stages of my training I had nobody to guide me on how or in what order or priority to do my modules. I followed the yacht route, and up until now I have always gone back to Yotspot in my career to see what requirements, sea time and courses I need and in what order as a reference. I have booked at least 4 of my modules through Yotspot and even got my current job thanks to the site. It has changed the game in our industry regarding crew, training and so much more, highly recommend! "
Liubov Chunikhovska Ex Chief Stewardess (MY Luna, 100m) "If you're looking for a job or recruiting crew I personally think that Yotspot is the best service in the industry. It basically has everything you need in one place. Yotspot has been crucial to work with professionals and provides a high-level of support. Thank you Yotspot Team and wishing you inspiration to keep going with new ideas along with success!"
Jo Stepien Stewardess/ Masseuse (MY New Secret, 75m) "I have been using Yotspot to find new interesting opportunities since the beginning of my yachting career. I have chosen to look on this platform because it offers full spectrum of options that you want to include in your search such as temporary or rotational position. I haven't seen it on any other yacht job search site and I always found it super useful to specify your search like that and look for the best option for me. Yotspot is a time saver. I have found my current job on it and I am very grateful for that. I will definitely recommend it to any yachtie to create a profile and search for his or her dream job on Yotspot as it's definitely somewhere there!"

Adam Handyside Chief Officer/ Relief Captain (MY Madame GU, 99m) "Madame Gu finds the Yotspot site a very effective way of reducing crew placement costs. There appears to be an increasing number of crew who are using it today. The site can be accessed 24hrs a day 7 days a week. The more it's used the more cost effective it becomes. Most traditional Crew Recruitment companies have no such concessions. Yotspot is our first stop when recruiting"
Brooke Holt Crew Coordinator (Sea Shepherd Conservation Society) "Yotspot is super useful as it is available 24/7. The fact that candidates are ranked from most suitable to the role, to least makes it easier to sort the square pegs for the round holes! Each job receives an excellent response rate with often more than one ideal candidate to deliberate over. Over the last three years, we have recruited over 25 crew from Yotspot, all of which have been wonderful additions to the crew. I would certainly recommend anyone needing to hire crew to use the Yotspot service as the value for money is second to none. I can post with confidence everytime. "
Marc Micheletti Captain (MY Eileen, 50m) "I have been using Yotspot since its early inception and I have to say that I keep being very impressed by its simplicity and effectiveness. Not only is it incredibly cost effective, the simplicity of posting a position and looking for crew is amazing. I have also used it myself for looking for employment and it also works really well from an Employee perspective. I am a big fan, keep up the good work Yotspot, you have my full support"

With all the talk about AI and whether it will cost or add jobs, and after researching and writing more than 40 articles about the subject, I have reached the following decision points:
1. AI, like other major inventions in history – including mass production, the PC, the internet, and social media – will create exponentially more jobs than it will cost.
2. We don’t yet know what many of those jobs will be, which makes readiness for the future more important than expertise for today.
3. We’ve had enough of generalities like “AI will create jobs” without being specific. To that end, let’s start with health care today, with other fields coming up in the near future.
Health Care Jobs Created By AI
Americans spend more money on health care – nearly 20% of our GDP and two to three times that of OECD countries – that job and career changes in health care are sea change. Such as:
Google s Surprise Update Just Made Android More Like iPhone
Ios 17 4 apple confirms surprise u turn for next iphone update, forget the new macbook pro apple has something much better, personalized medicine and treatment optimization.
Personalized medicine has been one of the most anticipated transformations of this century. It was hardly possible before AI, inevitable now. AI algorithms can analyze genetic data, patient histories, and other relevant information to develop personalized treatment plans. This approach improves treatment efficacy, minimizes adverse effects, and optimizes healthcare resources utilization. Expect lots of growth here.
Predictive Analytics and Early Disease Detection
If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that reacting to new diseases is no longer enough. Predict and prevent is the new normal. That’s where AI comes in. Predictive analytics models will analyze huge datasets of patient and population information to identify patterns and risk factors for diseases. This enables early detection of diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular conditions, and even prevention of infectious diseases.
Remote Patient Monitoring and Telemedicine
Wearable devices and remote monitoring systems enable continuous tracking of patients' health parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure, and glucose levels. This allows for instantaneous proactive intervention and remote consultations.
Virtual Health Assistants
Virtual assistants and chatbots provide patients with personalized health advice, medication reminders, and assistance in scheduling appointments. These tools enhance patient engagement, support self-management of chronic conditions, and alleviate the burden on healthcare providers, thereby playing an important role in cost containment.
Drug Discovery and Development
AI dramatically accelerates drug discovery processes by analyzing vast amounts of biological data to identify potentially successful drugs, predict their efficacy and improve them during their life cycles, and optimize their molecular structures. This has the potential to significantly reduce the time and cost associated with bringing new drugs to market, as well as making availability a non-issue.
Organ Chips
Imagine being able to eliminate animal and even human testing of drugs. Imagine being able to simulate time exposure to therapies or accelerate longitudinal studies. There’s no need to imagine this anymore. The innovation is in the organ chips.
Medical Imaging Analysis
AI algorithms can analyze medical images such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans to assist radiologists – actually, improve their readings – in detecting abnormalities and diagnosing diseases like cancer, fractures, and neurological conditions more accurately and efficiently.
Clinical Decision Support Systems
Clinical decision support systems analyze patient data, medical literature, best practices, and up-to-the-minute developments. AI will vastly improve these systems to provide healthcare professionals with evidence-based recommendations for diagnosis, and treatment planning. This improves clinical decision making by accessing more critical data, speeding up the analysis, and reducing the likelihood of medical errors.
Healthcare Operations and Workflow Optimization
While hospital operations can sometimes be a snag, predicting patient admission rates, managing bed occupancy, and streamlining resource allocation can be optimized by AI. Additionally, AI-powered robotic systems automate repetitive tasks such as inventory management (pharmacy, dining, housekeeping) thereby increasing operational efficiency and reducing costs.
As we see, AI will be far-reaching in health care, creating clinical, technical, operations, and research jobs.

What to Know About the Doctor Protests in South Korea
More than a week after thousands of doctors walked off the job, their dispute with the government shows no signs of resolution.
By Jin Yu Young
Reporting from Seoul
Surgeries postponed. Appointments canceled. Patients turned away from emergency rooms.
For more than a week, procedures at some of the largest hospitals in South Korea have been disrupted because thousands of medical interns and residents walked off their jobs. A prolonged walkout could have disastrous consequences.
The dispute started in early February, when the government proposed admitting more students to medical schools to address a longstanding shortage of physicians in South Korea. Interns and residents, known as trainee doctors, countered by saying that the shortage was not industrywide but confined to particular specialties, like emergency care. They said the government’s plan would not solve that problem, adding that they were victims of a system rife with harsh working conditions and low wages.
The doctors then took to the streets to the protest the plan, threatening to strike or quit their jobs. By and large, senior doctors backed their younger colleagues’ claims. But with surveys showing broad public support for beefing up the ranks of physicians, the government did not budge. Some saw the doctors’ pushback as a tactic to increase their paychecks.
Trainee doctors — who are a crucial part of large hospitals — started submitting their resignations on Feb. 19. As of Wednesday, nearly 10,000, or about 10 percent of all doctors in the country, had done so, according to government data. But most of these resignations have not been accepted by hospitals.
“It is impossible to justify collective action that takes people’s health hostage and threatens their lives and safety,” President Yoon Suk Yeol told reporters on Tuesday.
His government has said that if the doctors return to their jobs by Thursday, they would not face any legal repercussions. Otherwise they could risk losing their medical licenses and face fines of up to 30 million won ($22,000). The Health Ministry this week filed police complaints against a handful of doctors, accusing them of violating medical law.
As of Thursday morning, nearly 300 doctors had returned to work, according to the ministry. But with most trainee doctors still off the job, the dispute shows no signs of resolution.
Here’s what you need to know.
What is the situation in the hospitals now?
Many medical procedures have been pushed back. Patients have been told at the last minute that their appointments have been delayed indefinitely. Some have been redirected to smaller clinics. The government has temporarily allowed hospitals to let nurses fill in for doctors when appropriate. Nonetheless, many major hospitals remain short-staffed, generating complaints from the public.
One case this week was used by both sides to bolster their argument. A woman in her 80s with terminal cancer was turned away by several emergency rooms after her heart stopped beating, with hospitals saying they were at capacity. When she finally was admitted, she was declared dead on arrival.
For the government and its supporters, it showed how a shortage of physicians could be fatal for patients — even though a government investigation concluded that the woman’s death had no correlation to the doctors’ walkout.
For the doctors, it was the clearest sign of a structural problem that has long overburdened emergency care in South Korea. The country’s medical system allows patients with minor injuries or illnesses to seek treatment at emergency rooms, using resources that should instead go to patients in severe or critical condition, doctors claim.
What has the government proposed?
The need for more doctors in South Korea is acute, the government says, especially given its rapidly aging population. It has about 2.6 doctors for every 1,000 people, compared with an average of 3.7 in the countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Earlier this month, the Health Ministry proposed increasing medical school admissions to about 5,000 students a year, from 3,000, starting in 2025. It would be the first increase since 2006 and, the government said, would mean an extra 10,000 doctors in a decade. The government also pledged to spend over 10 trillion won to improve essential services throughout the country, especially health care in rural areas.
Doctors argue that increasing the number of medical students will do little to change the status quo. A similar attempt by Mr. Yoon’s predecessor, in 2020, to increase the number of doctors resulted in a physician walkout that lasted a month. The government ended up shelving the expansion.
What do the doctors want?
Interns and residents have a long list of grievances. While some established doctors in South Korea are well paid, doctors in training say they work long hours for little pay even though they are the linchpins of the country’s medical system. Interns and residents make around $3,000 a month and often work more than 80 hours a week, according to the medical community. Young doctors often make up a third or more of the work force in some of the major hospitals, and often provide the first line of care for patients.
They say the government has ignored structural issues that make some specializations like cosmetic surgery and dermatology more lucrative than vital services like emergency and pediatrics. The Korean Medical Association and the Korean Intern and Resident Association, two of the nation’s largest groups of doctors, have demanded better working conditions for young doctors in essential services, more equal pay across all specializations and the retraction of the expanded medical school admissions cap.
Under current conditions, it is “impossible for doctors to take care of patients with a sense of mission,” Joo Soo-ho, a spokesman of the Korean Medical Association, said on Tuesday.
Is there a political element to the dispute?
The plan to increase the number of medical students enjoys widespread support among South Koreans, according to surveys. In one , as many as 76 percent of respondents backed the government’s plan.
The proposal to increase medical school admissions is part of a wider health care policy plan that was announced by President Yoon months before a crucial parliamentary election in April. His approval rating has inched up as he has stood his ground against the doctors.
For most of his two years in office, Mr. Yoon has struggled with low approval ratings, rising consumer prices and scandals connected to his wife , his policies and his handling of disasters . By pushing through changes that his predecessor had tried but failed to implement in the face of resistance from doctors, Mr. Yoon is hoping to improve his profile in an election year.

Here’s why thousands of junior doctors in South Korea walked off the job
Thousands of junior doctors in South Korea have been refusing to see patients and attend surgeries for a week in anger over the government’s push to recruit more medical students. Their joint strikes are now at a critical juncture, with authorities warning that they have until Thursday to return to work or face the suspensions of their licenses and prosecutions. (Feb. 27)

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Thousands of junior doctors in South Korea have been refusing to see patients and attend surgeries since they walked off the job Feb. 20 in response to the government’s push to recruit more medical students.
As of Tuesday, about 8,940 medical interns and residents have left their worksites in protest, disrupting the operations of major hospitals in South Korea and threatening to burden the country’s overall medical service. Authorities warned that they have until Thursday to return to work or face license suspensions and prosecutions.
Here’s what’s happening with the strikes:
WHY ARE DOCTORS STRIKING?

The government plans to raise South Korea’s yearly medical school admission caps by 2,000, from the current 3,058.
The enrollment plan is meant to add up to 10,000 doctors by 2035 to cope with the country’s fast-aging population . Officials say South Korea has 2.1 physicians per 1,000 people — far below the average of 3.7 in the developed world.
The striking doctors-in-training say schools can’t handle an abruptly increased number of medical students. They predict doctors in greater competition would perform overtreatment — increasing public medical expenses — and, like current medical students, most of the additionally recruited medical students would also likely try to work in high-paying, popular professions like plastic surgery and dermatology. That means the country’s long-running shortage of physicians in essential yet low-paying areas like pediatrics, obstetrics and emergency departments would remain unchanged.
Some critics say the striking junior doctors simply oppose the government plan because they worry adding more doctors would result in a lower income.
Ahn Cheol-soo, a doctor-turned-lawmaker in the ruling party, said on a local TV program that he supports the government’s plan. But without fundamental steps to convince students to opt for the essential areas, Ahn said that “2,000 new dermatology hospitals will be established in Seoul 10 years later.”
WHAT DO THE STRIKES MEAN FOR PATIENTS?
The walkouts have led hospitals to cancel numerous planned surgeries and other medical treatments. On Friday, an octogenarian undergoing cardiac arrest was reportedly declared dead after seven hospitals turned her away, citing a lack of medical staff or other reasons likely related to the walkouts.
In some major hospitals, junior doctors account for about 30%-40% of the total doctors, playing the role of supporting senior doctors during surgeries and dealing with inpatients. The strikers are among the country’s 13,000 medical residents and interns , and they work and train at about 100 hospitals in South Korea.

In the wake of the walkouts, the government has extended the working hours for public medical institutions, opened emergency rooms at military hospitals to the public, and given nurses legal protection to conduct some medical procedures typically done by doctors.
Vice Health Minister Park Min-soo said Tuesday that the country’s handling of critical and emergency patients largely remains stable. But observers say the country’s overall medical service would suffer a major blow if the walkouts prolonged, or if senior doctors join the strike.
The Korea Medical Association, which represents about 140,000 doctors in South Korea, has steadfastly expressed its support of the trainee doctors, though it hasn’t determined whether to join their walkouts.
Park Jiyong, a spine surgeon in South Korea, said senior doctors at major university hospitals will likely join the walkout in coming days, which would “virtually collapse the operations of those hospitals.”
WHAT’S NEXT?
On Monday, Park, the vice health minister, said the government won’t seek any disciplinary steps against the striking doctors if they report back to work by Thursday. But, he warned, anyone who missed the deadline would be punished with a minimum three-month suspension of their medical licenses and face further legal steps, such as investigations and indictments by prosecutors.
Still, the strikers aren’t likely to back down soon.
South Korea’s medical law allows the government to issue back-to-work orders to doctors when it sees grave risks to public health. Those who refuse to abide by such orders can have their medical licenses suspended for up to 1 year and also face up to three years in prison or a 30-million-won (roughly $22,500) fine. Those who receive prison sentences would be stripped of their medical licenses.
Some observers say authorities will probably limit punishment to strike leaders for fear of a further strain on hospital operations.
Doctors are among the highest-paid professionals in South Korea, and the trainees’ walkout has so far failed to win public support, with a survey showing that about 80% of respondents support the government’s recruitment plan.
“What if your mother has to get an injection or die? It seems like those doctors never were in others’ shoes but are only emotional,” said Kim Myung-ae, a 57-year-old cancer patient. “They don’t care about the patients but only the benefits they get as doctors in this country.”
