Crime in Dakar is relatively high; crime against tourists is common, even around Place de l'Independance . Use common sense: women should not walk around alone after dark. Watch your pockets in crowded places, such as Sandaga, and keep a close eye on your belongings. There are many different scams to get money from tourists, so be wary. Avoid the beaches at night. Try not to wear any outwardly expensive items of clothing or jewelry. Overall, though, the Senegalese are an incredibly friendly and hospitable people and you will meet many people who are genuinely interested in talking to you.

The Senegalese people are in no way violent. The main crime that they suffer from is due to their lack of wealth. Some people turn to stealing so that they can drink clean water and eat. Senegal is one of the most governmentally stable countries on the continent of Africa. They have a good police force, many of whom speak English.

Dakar City Guide: A Vibrant Sailing Destination and Cultural Hub

location yacht dakar

Overlooking the azure Atlantic Ocean, Dakar, Senegal’s capital, stands as a beacon of culture, history, and maritime allure. This West African city, known for its bustling ports and rich musical heritage, has long been a favored stop for sailors and travelers. With a harmonious blend of its colonial past and a dynamic present, Dakar promises a cornucopia of experiences for every kind of traveler. From its captivating arts scene to the bustling markets, the city pulsates with energy, awaiting exploration.

Anchoring in Dakar: Yacht Clubs and Ports

For sailors, Dakar is more than just a pit stop—it’s a maritime hub where Atlantic adventures begin. The city’s ports, particularly the Port of Dakar, stand among the largest in West Africa, teeming with a diverse array of vessels, from commercial ships to luxury yachts. Several yacht clubs, such as the Cercle de Voile de Dakar, offer amenities tailored for the sailing community. These establishments provide mooring facilities, repair services, and even sailing courses for enthusiasts. The surrounding areas of the ports and clubs are vibrant, with numerous seaside cafes and eateries offering a taste of Senegal’s culinary delights, making the docking experience even more enjoyable.

Urban Attractions: Monuments, Markets, and Museums

Dakar’s urban landscape is a delightful mix of historic landmarks and modern structures. The African Renaissance Monument, towering over the city, stands testament to the nation’s aspirations and achievements. For history enthusiasts, the House of Slaves on Gorée Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers profound insights into the Atlantic slave trade era. Dakar’s numerous markets, such as the Kermel and Sandaga, are bustling epicenters of trade where vibrant fabrics, aromatic spices, and intricate handicrafts beckon visitors. Museums like the IFAN Museum of African Arts preserve and showcase the rich cultural and artistic heritage of Senegal, offering a curated glimpse into the nation’s soul.

Dakar’s Thriving Arts and Music Scene

Music and arts lie at the heart of Dakar’s cultural identity. The city, often dubbed as West Africa’s music capital, has been the cradle for genres like Mbalax and has produced world-renowned artists like Youssou N’Dour. Regular music festivals, live performances at local ‘maquis’ (open-air venues), and dance events bring the streets alive with rhythm. Beyond music, Dakar’s arts scene is burgeoning. The Dak’Art Biennale, one of Africa’s most prestigious art events, showcases contemporary African art, drawing artists and enthusiasts from across the globe. Numerous galleries and art spaces throughout the city celebrate the creativity of local and regional artists.

Nightlife and Entertainment: Where to Go Post-Sunset

As the sun dips below the horizon, Dakar’s nightlife awakens. The city boasts a plethora of entertainment options for nocturnal adventurers. From upscale nightclubs playing a mix of international hits and local tunes to traditional Senegalese dance performances, there’s something for everyone. Bars and lounges along the coast offer the perfect setting to sip on a cocktail while listening to the soothing sounds of the ocean. For those seeking a more immersive experience, attending a Senegalese wrestling match, a popular local sport, provides a unique glimpse into Dakar’s cultural fabric.

Local Markets and Shopping Adventures

Shopping in Dakar is an immersive experience. The city’s markets are colorful mazes where one can find everything from traditional African attire to ornate jewelry. The Marché HLM, renowned for its vibrant textiles, is a haven for fabric enthusiasts. Here, one can procure beautifully patterned fabrics and even get a custom-made outfit from the tailors within the market. For souvenirs, the Village des Arts offers an array of handicrafts, sculptures, and paintings crafted by local artisans. Navigating these markets, with their unique sights, sounds, and smells, provides a sensory adventure and a chance to acquire mementos that capture the essence of Senegal.

Excursions from Dakar: Day Trips for Sailors

Beyond the city’s confines, numerous destinations await exploration. The Pink Lake or Lac Rose, with its unique rosy hue and salt harvesters, is a surreal sight. For nature enthusiasts, the Bandia Wildlife Reserve, home to species like giraffes, rhinos, and zebras, promises an African safari experience. The serene Sine-Saloum Delta, with its mangrove forests and traditional fishing villages, offers a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle. These destinations, easily accessible from Dakar, enhance the maritime journey, adding layers of adventure and exploration.

Interacting with Locals: Etiquette and Tips

Dakar’s heartbeat is its people—warm, welcoming, and proud of their heritage. Interacting with locals enriches the travel experience manifold. While the Senegalese are hospitable, it’s essential to approach interactions with respect and awareness. A few words in Wolof, the local language, can break the ice and elicit smiles. It’s customary to greet people, even strangers, and to show respect to elders. When shopping or dining, polite haggling is accepted, but it’s crucial to remain courteous. Participating in local traditions, attending community events, or simply sharing a meal can forge bonds and offer profound insights into Dakar’s soul.

Dakar, with its maritime charm and cultural vibrancy, stands as a testament to Senegal’s enduring spirit. For sailors and travelers alike, the city offers a mosaic of experiences, from its historic landmarks to the infectious rhythm of its streets. Whether one is anchoring for a brief sojourn or immersing in its cultural tapestry, Dakar promises memories that echo with the harmonious blend of the waves and the melodies of its land.

Sightseeing:

Dakar, capital of the Republic of Senegal, is a vibrant city of broad, tree-lined avenues, colorful open-air markets, inviting cafes and just a splash of French elan. Striking contemporary architecture is set off by historical colonial buildings while a myriad of galleries, boutiques, and street vendors offer everything from fine paintings, sculptures, and crafts to colorful clothing and imported goods.

Tucked n a corner of Independence Square is the 5* Pullman Hotel (Accor Group) with good views over the sea, corniche, Presidents Palace, and beaches.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Taxis. Cheap and safe and everywhere. Just don't mind the broken windshields. All taxi fares are negotiated beforehand and will require bargaining. If you're not from Senegal, you will probably have an outrageous price proposed, so check with locals before to get an idea of what they pay, in order to know what you will be able to get.

Due to the relatively high crime rate, an organized tour is recommended.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

Gorée is known as the location of the House of Slaves (French: Maison des esclaves), built by an Afro-French Métis family about 1780–1784. The House of Slaves is one of the oldest houses on the island. It is now used as a tourist destination to show the horrors of the slave trade throughout the Atlantic world. It is rather easy to do on your own, without a ship tour--if you can get yourself over to the ferry (it's not that far from where the ship docks). You need about 3 hours--and watch the ferry times.

Shopping and Food

Leave all your shopping until you get back to the dock as a large market is set up there by the locals and you need to bargain!! .

Marche Kermel a bustling marketplace is also close to the docks.

You definitely will get annoyed with the constant haggling of the thousands of street vendors. Just politely say "No thank you" and walk away. Don't get abusive to the trader; he is only trying to feed his family.

The local currency is the CFA francs, but the US dollar is generally accepted.

The cost of living in Dakar

Dakar is an affordable city but it depends a lot on the neighborhoods. Prices have increased enormously in recent years so we must take the prices we share with you as orders of magnitude.

The currency, the CFA Franc (FCFA)

First, let's talk about the CFA Franc (FCFA). It does not oscillate the exchange rate is very constant and stable.

1 EUR = 0.0015

You can take as a benchmark: 1000 FCFA = 1.5 EURTo quickly calculate a little trick: When you have 7000 FCFA for example, you make 7/2 = 3.5 and you add these 3.5 to 7 which makes 10.5 EUR approximately. Another example 14000 FCFA -> 14/2 = 7 -> 14+7 = 21 -> 14000 FCFA = 21 EUR approximately

Order of magnitude of prices

Here are some indicative references to keep in mind:

  • Price of a baguette: Between 100 and 250 FCFA (depending on the bakery and the quality of the bread)
  • Price of a Tieboudienne : Between 500 (in bus station) and 2000 FCFA
  • Price of a good pizza: 5500 (Margarita) – 11000 FCFA (Tartuffo) at Mamma Pizza
  • Price of a car: used car no less than 1 million FCFA
  • Price of a jakarta: Between 100,000 FCFA and 200,000 FCFA
  • Price of a taxi in Plateau – airport: between 16,000 FCFA (with Allo taxi) and 22,000 FCFAAll prices and advice for taxi transport in the article transport in Dakar and Senegal

Accommodation :

  • Price of a rent in Plateau: 650 000 FCFA for a 3 bedroom living room
  • Price of a rent in Les Mamelles for a room in colloc: Count about 300 000 FCFA
  • Price of a room in a house in Point E: 250,000 – 300,000 FCFA
  • Price for a dive: 20,000 FCFA
  • Price of a garment made of Wax: Wax shirt about 7000 FCFA (3000-5000 FCFA + 1500-2000 FCFA per meter provide 2 meters)
  • Price of a day swimming pool: 10 000 FCFA (Olympic club …)

Currency exchange

We advise you not to open an account whenever possible. The administrative burden is heavy!

The main banks in Senegal to withdraw:

  • Societe Generale

The easiest way is to take a Révolut card or an online bank such as Boursorama (you can also earn 80 € by opening your account with the code RERA7556). Avoid the exchange on the street.

When to go to Dakar and Senegal?

The climate in Dakar is very pleasant. There are 2 seasons:

  • From July to October : Wintering (a kind of monsoon) where it is very hot (about 35 °) and humid with big thunderstorms every 2 days. The month of October is particularly hot (so avoid this month to visit Senegal). Many roads can be cut off during wintering due to heavy rains
  • From November to June: Dry season. It is about 25 ° during the day and a little cooler in the evening (bring a sweater or a light jacket). During this period it is very rare for it to rain.

Wintering is a special period because life regains its rights and the landscapes find colors with green landscapes.

Around February, it is possible to have sandstorms called the Armatan. For about a week, a sandy mist takes over the city, enters the houses and paralyzes the city while the sandy veil disappears.

Senegalese food

The Senegalese dishes are excellent you will enjoy. Do not hesitate to take thiebou diennes! We present you some must-sees:

  • Thiebou Dienne (Thiep): it is the favorite dish of Senegalese only at lunch and even in bus stations they are excellent!
  • Thiebou Dienne Diaga : it is a tiebou dienne with rice often red and fish dumplings.
  • Senegalese couscous : Couscous is quite classic and a safe dish even if in my opinion, it is less good and less hearty than in the Magreb countries.
  • Chicken yassa : one of the most famous dishes too. This is a chicken with yassa sauce with onions don't miss it!
  • Mafé : Often eaten with chicken and rice, mafé is a peanut paste sauce. It's great but it may seem a little special at first.
  • Mbakhal Saloum : Lamb with peanut and millet! Our favorite dish!
  • The lot skewers : between 2500 and 5000 FCFA, it is a typical dish also that can be found all along the coast. It's amazing 😍
  • Dibi : Dibiteries are typical lamb meat restaurants. You still have to be careful if you have a fragile stomach or if the body has not yet become accustomed.
  • Seafood: Oysters, sea urchins, mussels, scallops (clams)… there are some in all the mangroves of the country. do not hesitate to taste them! (ex: The somone we find oysters at about 2000 FCFA for about ten oysters).
  • Kandia soup : Okra stew cooked in palm oil accompanied by fish.
  • Drinks : The juice of Bissap and Bouille. Bissap is red as a drink. It is ibiscus flower. La Bouille is rather white. It is the fruit of the Baobab. Don't miss these must-sees in Senegal

Note, you will find in Senegal, very good bakery with croissant, baguette etc!

Be careful there are usually a lot of people and it opens at 6am! You have to register at a first counter, then you have a number, you are called to check the papers (Passport, plane ticket …) and then we redo a queue with a number and then we can do the testsThe price was 25000 FCFA but this may have changed. ⚠️ it should also be noted that it is mandatory to have a plane ticket to be able to do the tests. • Phone / Internet : Orange / Free – Good 4G and Wifi (fiber) networks in Plateau

  • The French in Dakar : The most active community in Dakar! (housing, furniture sales, good deals…)
  • Dakarium: Turfs & Cribs : to find accommodation/collocation
  • Español@s in Dakar and Senegal : for Spaniards

Our latest tips:

  • Enjoy it to the fullest, Dakar and Senegal are amazing!
  • The Dakar and Senegal are unfortunately very polluted. The air, the cars, the beaches, the sea… if you are sensitive to this you could not live your stay in Dakar badly. You should know that pollution is strong.
  • Pay attention to yourself, never walk in places of passage (Markets, popular neighborhoods …) with valuables. In recent years, attacks have increased. Close your windows and doors tightly when you go on vacation and in the evening.
  • Pay attention to scams The classic scam I personally got fooled.
  • Someone accosts you on the street and says "Hi, you remember me"
  • after there are several versions "at Madame Ndiaye's" or "it was me who was at customs when you arrived" … in short, a pretext for meeting for which we have a doubt and we feel guilty for not remembering the person.
  • The demand for money. When you are confused about not remembering, the person tells you that they need 5000 or 10000 FCFA to buy gasoline or other.
  • It gives you a "guarantee" that it's not wrong by giving you a phony phone number

In short, pay attention to this kind of scam

Emerald Sakara Itineraries

Emerald sakara review, review of emerald sakara.

The 2023-built Emerald Sakara cruise ship is a superyacht with max passenger capacity 100. This is the second of two newbuilds  in the Emerald Cruises fleet , as well as the company's second ocean-going vessel - following the sistership Azzurra (2022). Sakara was constructed in Vietnam (by Halong Shipbuilding Company/HLS in Ha Long City ). HLS was contracted to build the hull and install all the yacht's machinery, while the interior fit-out was managed by a separate project team.

The vessel (IMO number 9948827) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311001261) and registered in  Nassau .

Inaugurated in August 2023 (postponed from February), Sakara is Emerald Cruises' 11th boat, having as fleetmates 9x riverboats and the sistership Azzurra.

The superyacht Emerald Sakara has max passenger capacity 100 (plus 76 crew/staff). The ship design is sleek (megayacht-like hull and superstructure), with premium accommodations (ultra-modern hotel amenities), spacious restaurants, a large wellness complex (gym, infrared sauna, spa, massage rooms), two tender boats (used for passenger debarkation and embarkation in tender ports / without docking facilities), two Zodiacs (large-capacity, high-speed RIB boats used for coastal cruising and landings), aft Marina platform (for launching watersports activities - swimming, snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, etc), a large infinity pool (with a stern-facing glass front), a dedicated pool deck (aft location, oval-shaped pool, sunbathing area with padded loungers, open-air Bar).

Emerald Sakara also carries its own electronic bikes (Gocycle brand) from the premium manufacturer Karbon Kinetics Ltd (2002-founded by Richard Thorpe/McLaren Cars design engineer).

Emerald Sakara yacht cruise ship

Emerald Waterways is a new (established 2014) river cruise shipping company and brand owned by Scenic Group ( Scenic Tours Australia). Emerald Waterways riverboats are well-known as some of the best on the market newbuild ships with premium facilities and superb services provided by professionally trained staff and crew.

On February 1, 2020, Emerald Waterways introduced the new brand "Emerald Yacht Cruises". It officially starts operations in 2022 (February) with the inauguration of the Azzurra superyacht, which was initially planned for July 2021.

The yacht's name (Sakara) is a Sanskrit word that means “thoughts become things”. Also similarly sounds Saqqara (Sakkara/Saccara) - the Egyptian kings' and royals' necropolis at Ancient Egypt's capital city Memphis/Menefer.

Decks and Cabins

Of all Emerald Sakara staterooms (50 total), 88% are with a step-out balcony - excluding only Deck 3's Oceanviews (with windows). Standard Balcony cabins are sized 29 m2 (310 ft2, including the veranda). The cabin balcony access is via floor-ceiling sliding glass doors. The veranda is furnished with two deckchairs and a small table. The ship's largest passenger accommodations are the two Owner Suites (on Pool Deck 6) each sized 111 m2 (1195 ft2, including a large terrace). The smallest are the six Oceanview cabins (forward on Deck 3) each sized 19 m2 (205 ft2).

The boat has 7 decks , of which 5 are passenger-accessible and 4 with cabins. Two Lifts (midship Elevators) interconnect all decks.

All staterooms are with contemporary design, luxurious en-suite bathrooms (WC, shower, single-sink vanity, hairdryer, premium toiletries, bathrobes, slippers), twin beds (convertible to double / Queen-size, Egyptian cotton linens, quality pillows), bedside cabinets (with recessed lights), wardrobe, electronic safe box (in the closet), mirrored writing desk (dressing table with chair), sofa, coffee table with chaise lounge chairs, mini-bar (refrigerator), phone, smart HDTV (satellite reception, infotainment system / Internet, movies-on-demand), free Wi-Fi, individually controlled air-conditioning, bottled water (daily restocked), umbrella (used on land tours).

Bonus amenities (suite-only perks) include a walk-in closet, pillow menu, Welcome Gifts (bottle of champagne and fruit platter / upon arrival), mini-bar (daily restocked), coffee machine, tea-making facility, free laundry (2 items daily for Yacht Suites and Terrace, and 4 items daily for Owner Suites). Both Owner Suites additionally receive free room service (in-cabin dining) with served pre-dinner canapes and after-dinner sweets.

Shipboard facilities

The onboard food offering features local cuisine specialties (based on the visited ports along the current itinerary) and gourmet dishes (prepared with the freshest, locally sourced produce). The ship has 3 restaurants and 3 bars (lounges), including the pool deck's lounge. Breakfast and lunch buffets and a la carte dinners are served at Reflections Restaurant (full-capacity Dining Room on Deck 3).

Adjacent to the restaurant (aft) is The Terrace - an outdoor lounge that doubles as an alfresco dining venue (weather permitting). Onboard dining is complimentary and inclusive of beverages - soft drinks, beer and wine (by the glass) are waiter-served and free at all lunches and dinners.

Emerald Sakara yacht pool deck

Horizon Bar Lounge is the largest and serves as the main lounge. The Observation Lounge is a small indoor venue with bow-location (Deck 4).

On Pool Deck (deck 6) is located The Cafe (outdoor lounge served by its own bar).

Sky Bar (Deck 7) is an outdoor poolside bar that serves beverages and light snacks to Sky Deck's sundeck area (with Jacuzzi/spa pool).

Emerald Sakara yacht sundeck pool

Emerald Yacht Cruises Emerald Sakara's prices are inclusive of return flights (economy-class, from London Heathrow Airport), transfers (airport, and to/from the ship), port fees, airport taxes, all onboard meals, select drinks, onboard tipping (gratuities), shore excursions, enrichment program (lectures, media presentations, live performances), watersports (equipment and activities).

Ashore, passengers enjoy the complimentary EmeraldPLUS cultural program (professionally guided tours) and EmeraldACTIVE program (guided bicycle tours). Additionally, Emerald Yacht Cruises customers can book optional shore excursions (by the company's DiscoverMORE program) which come at extra cost.

Emerald Yacht Cruises sells fly-cruise deals which are ATOL-protected (Air Travel Organiser's Licence) and ABTA-protected (directly booked flights with non-ATOL airlines).

Itineraries

While certified for unrestricted passenger shipping operations in all regions (except polar), the yacht Emerald Sakara is custom-designed to navigate in warmer climates, like Southern Europe's Mediterranean (Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea), Red Sea (Arabia) and Indian Ocean (Seychelles), offering a unique superyacht cruising experience. The boat's smaller size (and water draft) allows it to visit ports that larger ships can't access.

Emerald Cruises' yachts offer seasonally (in spring and fall) cheap Transatlantic crossings between the Caribbean and Europe (RepositionCruises.com).

Sakara's inaugural season was initially scheduled to start in February 2023, but was eventually postponed for August 2023.

  • The boat's first voyage was scheduled to start on February 25, 2023. The 7-day "Tropical Charms of Seychelles" itinerary (roundtrip from Victoria, Mahe Island ) was planned to visit the islands Sainte-Anne , Cousin , Praslin , Grande-Soeur , Curieuse , La Digue and Aride .
  • Bookings were opened on September 28, 2021.
  • Sakara's 2021-announced inaugural 2023 season included a total of 32x Seychelles departures.

In Oct 2022 was announced that starting in November 2023, the boat will be deployed in the Caribbean with homeporting in St John's Antigua . The 7-night roundtrip from Antigua ("Eastern Caribbean and Grenadines Cruise" itinerary) visits Martinique (Saint-Pierre), St Vincent and The Grenadines ( Bequia/Port Elizabeth , Tobago Cays , Mayreau ), St Lucia ( Soufriere ) and Guadeloupe ( Terre-de-Haut ).

Sakara's inaugural season (2023) was entirely changed as the ship was deployed first in the Mediterranean (August thru November) then in the Caribbean (Nov 2023 thru March 2024).

The Maiden Voyage (Aug 5th) is a 7-day Mediterranean itinerary from Athens to Rome (Piraeus-Civitavecchia).

The first Transatlantic crossing starts on Nov 7th (12-day from Lisbon to St Johns Antigua) and is without any call ports.

The first Caribbean voyage departs on Nov 18th (6-day) from St Johns Antigua. The yacht also offers homeporting in/roundtrips leaving from San Juan Puerto Rico with the "West Indies Island Hopping Cruise" itinerary.
