Yachtworld Reviews The Aicon Yachts Vivere 66′

by Liv Yachts

Yachtworld x Aicon Yachts

Liv Yacht Sales had the privilege of showcasing the AICON 66′ Vivere at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, where it caught the eye of the esteemed team at YachtWorld. Their in-depth review of this exquisite vessel left us thoroughly impressed.

Crafted by the visionary Sergio Cutolo, the AICON 66 Vivere embodies luxury and sophistication in every detail. Measuring 71’4″ in length with a beam of 17’6″ and a 5’3″ draft, this cruiser-sized yacht boasts features typically reserved for mega yachts.

One standout feature highlighted by YachtWorld is the introduction of a skylight on the flybridge, flooding the salon with natural light and creating an inviting ambiance. The interior design draws inspiration from Sicilian families, incorporating premium materials like woods, marbles, and leathers in tasteful colors.

The master stateroom, in particular, captivated the reviewers with its expanded circular hull window, offering a romantic connection to the outdoors. The flybridge, equipped with a wine fridge and barbecue, is perfect for entertaining guests.

Model Answer 1

One of my most cherished childhood memories revolves around a special toy I received, a vibrant red remote-controlled car. This remarkable gift found its way into my life on my seventh birthday, presented to me by my uncle. The car, with its sleek design and glossy finish, was a miniature replica of a sports car I'd always admired in magazines.

The moment I laid eyes on it, a wave of excitement rushed over me. It wasn't just any toy; it symbolized adventure, speed, and the thrill of technology, all packed into a small, tangible object that I could control. My uncle, aware of my fascination with cars, had chosen this gift with utmost thoughtfulness. His gesture deepened our bond and made me feel incredibly valued and understood.

Operating the car was an exhilarating experience. I spent countless hours maneuvering it through the hallways of our home, creating obstacle courses, and even engaging in friendly races with neighborhood friends. This toy was more than just a source of entertainment; it was a tool that ignited my imagination and fostered a sense of innovation and creativity in me. The joy it brought was immeasurable, often transporting me to a world where I was the driver of my destiny, navigating through life's challenges with the same ease and confidence with which I steered that car.

Reflecting on how I felt about this toy, it's clear that it was an integral part of my childhood. It wasn't just the physical aspect of the toy that mattered, but the emotional connection and the life lessons it inadvertently imparted. It taught me about the joy of exploration, the excitement of learning something new, and the importance of cherishing the thoughtful gestures of loved ones. Even today, the memory of that red remote-controlled car brings a nostalgic smile to my face, reminding me of a simpler, yet profoundly joyful time in my life.

Model Answer 2

In the tapestry of my childhood memories, one particular toy stands out vividly – a charming, handcrafted wooden puzzle, gifted to me by my grandfather when I was around six years old. This unique toy, composed of various geometric shapes, was not only a plaything but a gateway to a world of imagination and learning.

The day I received this puzzle, my grandfather explained its significance – each piece represented a vital aspect of life, symbolizing harmony and balance. The warmth in his voice and the sparkle in his eyes as he handed me this gift is a memory etched in my heart. It was more than a mere toy; it was a token of love, steeped in wisdom and care.

Engaging with this puzzle was an adventure in itself. Each piece, with its distinct shape and texture, offered a tactile experience that captivated my senses. I would spend hours fitting them together, forming patterns and shapes, reveling in the sense of accomplishment each completed puzzle brought. It wasn't just an activity; it was an exercise in patience, problem-solving, and creativity. The joy of discovering multiple solutions to a single puzzle fostered in me a love for challenges and an appreciation for diverse perspectives.

Reflecting on my feelings towards this toy, it's evident that it played a significant role in shaping my early cognitive and emotional development. It wasn't just an object of amusement but a tool that nurtured my curiosity, honed my analytical skills, and taught me the value of perseverance. The emotional bond I formed with this puzzle goes beyond mere nostalgia; it symbolizes the enduring lessons of my childhood and the timeless wisdom imparted by my grandfather. Even today, the memory of those quiet afternoons spent solving the wooden puzzle serves as a reminder of the simple joys of learning and the enduring power of heartfelt gifts.

The sample response to "Describe a toy you got in your childhood" is a model answer that would likely achieve a high score in the IELTS Speaking test, and here's why:

1. Rich, Descriptive Language:  The response is laden with descriptive details that paint a vivid picture, like "charming, handcrafted wooden puzzle" and "each piece represented a vital aspect of life." Such descriptions demonstrate an extensive vocabulary and the ability to use language effectively to describe objects and emotions.

2. Personal Engagement and Emotional Depth:  The speaker connects deeply with the topic, sharing personal feelings and memories. Phrases like "a memory etched in my heart" and "the emotional bond I formed" exhibit the ability to reflect on and articulate personal experiences, a skill that is highly valued in the IELTS Speaking section.

3. Coherent Structure:  The response is well-organized, narrating a story that begins with receiving the toy and explores its significance. This coherent structure, moving seamlessly from one idea to the next, shows excellent organizational skills.

4. Varied Sentence Construction:  The use of a mix of simple, compound, and complex sentences, like "Each piece, with its distinct shape and texture, offered a tactile experience that captivated my senses," demonstrates grammatical range and accuracy.

5. Demonstrating Critical Thinking:  The candidate reflects on how the toy influenced their development, using phrases like "nurtured my curiosity" and "taught me the value of perseverance." This reflection demonstrates critical thinking skills, adding depth to the response.

Model Answer 3

Among the myriad of toys that colored my childhood, one remains particularly close to my heart – a classic, blue teddy bear, a gift I received from my parents on a cold winter morning of my fifth birthday. This cuddly companion, with its soft fur and comforting embrace, instantly became my cherished treasure.

I remember vividly the day I got it. The skies were gray, but the room lit up with joy when my parents surprised me with this bear. It was more than just a toy; it was a symbol of love and comfort. Holding it in my arms, I felt a sense of security and warmth that only a child can experience in the presence of a beloved toy.

This teddy bear was my constant companion. It was there during long car rides, family vacations, and even under my pillow during thunderous nights. The bear was not just an object for amusement; it was a source of solace and a listener to my endless childhood stories. Playing with it, talking to it, and even pretending it could talk back, nurtured my imagination and emotional expression.

The emotional connection I had with this toy was profound. It represented the innocence of childhood and the unspoken bond of familial love. It taught me the value of companionship, the joy of imaginative play, and the comfort of having something constant in a world of change. Even now, when I reminisce about this blue teddy bear, it evokes a sense of nostalgia and a reminder of simpler, carefree days.

Looking back, I realize how this toy was not just a part of my playtime, but a vital piece of my childhood that helped shape my understanding of affection and comfort. The memory of this teddy bear is a cherished chapter in the story of my growing years, symbolizing the unwavering love and security provided by my family.

The response to the topic "Describe a toy you got in your childhood" is exemplary for several reasons, all of which contribute to its potential for a high score in the IELTS Speaking section:

1. Rich Descriptive Language:  The narrative begins with evocative language, describing the toy as a "classic, blue teddy bear." The use of adjectives like "cuddly," "soft," and "comforting" paints a vivid picture for the listener, showcasing the candidate’s ability to use a wide range of vocabulary effectively.

2. Emotional Depth and Personal Connection:  The speaker's deep emotional connection with the toy is evident throughout the narrative. Phrases like "symbol of love and comfort" and "a sense of security and warmth" illustrate the speaker's skill in expressing and reflecting on personal feelings and experiences.

3. Storytelling and Coherence:  The answer is structured as a narrative, taking the listener from the moment of receiving the toy through the various experiences associated with it. This storytelling approach demonstrates the candidate's ability to organize ideas logically and coherently.

4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy:  The narrative employs a variety of sentence structures, from simple to complex, exemplified in sentences like "This teddy bear was my constant companion." Such diversity in sentence construction demonstrates grammatical proficiency.

And, if you're preparing for your IELTS and seeking comprehensive guidance, our exclusive IELTS books (download pdf) could be the perfect aid for you. They offer in-depth strategies and practice exercises designed to enhance your speaking skills.

So, writing an essay on their favourite toy is a pleasure for them. However, young students sometimes struggle with sentence formation or structuring of an essay. Here, we have interesting long and short essays on my favourite toy to help them learn.

Kids can talk a lot about their favourite toys. However, they need guidance and orientation when it comes to writing. If you have a query on how to write an essay on ‘my favourite toy’, here are some key points that will help them:

  • Write a brief introduction about toys.
  • Write about your favourite toy.
  • Explain why it is your favourite toy.
  • Briefly conclude with its importance in your life.

Toy cars are one of the first gifts most kids get, and they are most of the kids’ all-time favourites. Writing simple and short lines are the best way to express a topic in junior classes. Here are a few lines to help write a toy essay for classes 1 and 2:

  • Toys are the beloved play objects and companions of kids.
  • Like all other kids, I love to play with many types of toys.
  • Though, my favourite toys are cars.
  • My family and friends always gift me many cars on my birthday.
  • I have several toy cars of different colours and models.
  • Some are models of Ferrari, some of Toyota and a few of Maruti.
  • I even have a remote-controlled toy car.
  • This toy car is red and looks like a real Porsche car.
  • My parents gifted me this car on my birthday this year.
  • I love all my toy cars.

Young kids like to play with dolls. So, when asked to write an essay on their favourite toy, most kids choose to write about dolls. Here is my favourite toy doll essay for classes 1, 2 and 3.

My favourite toys are my dolls. I have many other toys, but I love playing with my dolls the most. I have many dolls gifted to me by my parents and family. My favourite doll is a cute little Barbie I got on my last birthday from my elder sister. I have named my Barbie Masha after my favourite cartoon character Masha from the “Masha and the Bear” cartoon series. She is a beautiful doll with blue eyes and long golden hair. I dress her in different clothes every day. Together with my friends, we spend hours playing with our dolls. I love Masha the most.

My favourite toy barbie doll essay is a famous essay topic for kids. But they sometimes may not be able to construct sentences and articulate their emotions well on the topic. Here is a short essay on my favourite toy doll for kids for reference:

Barbie is my favourite toy doll, and I named her Cinderella, as I find her as beautiful as Cinderella. She has blue eyes, fair skin and long golden hair. I got her for my 5th birthday. I even have a beautiful home for her with many rooms, and she sleeps in a room with beautiful flowers. Cinderella has many dresses and shoes for every occasion. During summers she wears shorts and t-shirts, and during winters she wears jeans with jackets. But her favourite dress is a cute red coloured gown. This gown she wears for special occasions like a party. Sometimes I style her hair in different hairstyles. My parents gifted me, Skipper and Ken, on my last birthday. I play with Cinderella, Skipper, and Ken, imagine many stories and make them act in them. Sometimes I suppose they all are students, and I am their teacher. At times my friends also come home with their dolls, and we play with all our dolls. But I enjoy playing alone with Cinderella the most; she is my most precious toy.

Every child adores Teddy bears. These cuddly cuties are playmates of every child. But writing a long essay on the topic sometimes becomes challenging for kids as they cannot find the right expression to portray their thoughts. Here is my favourite toy teddy bear essay for class 3 students:

We all have been playing with toys since we are born. As infants, we had toys with sound and lights. Then came the block toys, cars and dolls. As we became older, we started playing with guns, building blocks and remote cars. Then come the teenage years, where our gadgets become our toys. However, one toy that never changes and is the eternal companion of every child is the teddy bear. We always have that one special teddy bear when we are infants, toddlers, children, teenagers and even when we are twenty.

I also like to have numerous toys. On my birthdays, festivals and other occasions, everyone gifts me toys. I have toy cars, puzzles, trucks, balls, robots, etc. Still, the toy I play the most with is my teddy bear. His name is Goofy. He is four feet tall, brown and with blue eyes. Goofy is my first gift from my grandmother, and she bought him for me on my first birthday. That makes him extra special to me. However, I love Goofy because he is cute, soft and cuddly. Goofy stays with me and sleeps with me. And on Sundays, he bathes with me. I cuddle with him when I feel scared, can’t sleep, or sad. He listens to all my stories attentively and hugs me when I hug him. Goofy and I play a lot. Sometimes it is just two of us, and sometimes my other teddy bears are also there. When we are not playing, Goofy sits in the corner of my bed with other teddy bears resting on his lap. When I study, Goofy sits quietly and waits for me to play with him. My dog, Fluffy, a cute white Pomeranian, loves playing with Goofy. When I come from school, sometimes I see Fluffy sitting with Goofy waiting for me. Then we all play together. I love Goofy a lot. He is my best playmate and a cherished gift from my grandmother.

When your child writes a composition on my favourite toy, they learn many things from it. The most important benefit of essay writing is the improvement in the linguistic skills of your child. Your child improves their sentence formation, and vocabulary and learns how to structure essays. They also understand their feelings for their favourite toys and learn to express them. They deeply inspect their feelings for their toys and the value attached to them. Your child gets the chance to visualise their connection to their favourite toy and write about it. It helps in boosting their confidence in creative writing.

Writing this essay unleashes the creativity of young students. As they think and write about their favourite toys, they improve their language and creative skills. Later they can use these learnings to write essays on other topics.

My Favorite Toy Essay Example

Every child has a favorite toy. Whether it be a bright red racer or a plastic playhouse, to each his own world of imagination. Personally, since I was just a small child, I owned a baby lamb which I kindly named BaeBae. He meant the world to me. I refused to go anywhere without my little lamb by my side. Every summer, our family would drive up to our lake house, something my family had built before my sister and I were born. Naturally, BaeBae tagged along.

The desert air normally blisters in the summer heat. However this evening, the air rang cool. I was sitting tucked away in our cluttered yet bare garage in a neon green plastic playset. I was getting too big to tuck my knees under the table comfortably so they hung over to the right, crossed at the ankles. BaeBae was balanced gently on my lap as I listened to my parents watching the T.V. from the other room. The floating sound of muffled music filled the air like mist after a warm rainy day. Not even a few minutes later my sister peered through the door to see what I was up too.

“You must be joking!” she chuckled, removing herself from the doorway. “You don’t even fit at the table anymore.”

“So what?” I refuted, too busy playing to look up at her. “ I’m not hurting anyone.”

“Chloe,” she looked at me with pleading eyes, “you’re too old for this. Too old to play with dolls. His name is BaeBae for heaven's sake! What would people think of you?” I was only five or six at the time but her words echoed throughout my head like a broken siren, calling my name and engraving into my skull.

“I don’t know… He should be Brian now. More grown-up.”

She laughed. She did not like the name and truthfully, neither did I. But, I had no intention of seeming childish.

As the years dragged on I slowly stopped playing with Brian all together. Not because I didn’t like him anymore, but because my perspective started to shift. If I was going to grow up I had to act like a grown-up. Eventually, we even sold the lake house and stopped traveling over the summer. What was there to see? Buildings and structures seemed to lose their individuality. They blended together with the same blocky walls and stained glass that mirrored each other tenfold. Sure, they had their perks here and there, but in the end, they were all the same.

Brian was kept in my closet. Nothing too noticeable, but open enough for just me to see him clearly. His worn-down fur soaked and brimming with leftover love from a young child. His eyes, small and calm with a soothing reassurance to them, glinted when hit by the light. Every so often on a particularly difficult day, I would take him down from his resting place and look at him with melancholy.

As the time kept marching forward I kept growing and growing, with Brian still tucked away for only me to see. Through these years of in and out of the closet, I started to learn. Not just about science or math, but about humanity and society. Once again my perspective started to shift, but this time, at my own doing. On one extraordinarily average day, I decided to pay Brian a visit, it had been a while after all. But this felt different. To my surprise, instead of being greeted with melancholy, my heart bloomed with admiration. After a few minutes, and even more surprisingly, I opened the closet door with BaeBae still in hand. Fresh air seeped into my lungs as I stepped closer and closer towards my bed, each step seemingly creating new sounds to fit my new ears, new sights to fit my new eyes.

As though he were a doll made of glass that could shatter at any wrong movement, I laid him carefully on my messy overthrown sheets for all to see. What was there left to hide? What does it matter if someone were to see him? He can’t hurt anyone, nor can he belong to anyone else. He was mine from the start. I had the choice to let people see him at the risk of being called immature. It was my choice all along.

Although I would have never written anything about my stuffed childhood friend a few years ago, I now know that to hide what might be viewed as embarrassing or childish to someone else might be seen as something of a sanctuary to you. If you live a life cast away into what you think people want, you will never feel fulfilled. You are the only one who decides what you are and how you live. The world can be cruel. But to those who know and accept who they are, it evolves into a vast playground molded by pure, unfiltered, childlike imagination.

9 Band Answer

Let’s dive into the ‘ Describe a toy you liked in your childhood ’ IELTS cue card (2022) with Band 7-9 sample answers & Follow up questions:

Introducing a toy

I was very  fond of toys in my childhood . It was my favourite activity to spend time with my collection of cars, dirt bikes, toy guns etc.

Here, I would love to describe a toy that made my childhood memorable.

  • My best-loved toy is a PlayStation which has lots of free video games.
  • My fondness and love for gaming started when I was only 3 years old.
  • This is when my life was filled with an obsession with computers, consoles, puzzles and toy games.
  • I received this toy on my 14 th birthday.
  • I had always wanted a video game ever since I saw it at the supermarket.
  • So my parents fulfilled their promise on that day.
  • When I woke up, I got the gift on by my bedside.
  • I must tell you, it was the best birthday present ever.
  • I still remember how crazily I called my friends to play with it.
  • I invited a bunch of friends over and had a video game party.
  • After my father made the necessary connections, the first video game was ready to play.
  • It was Pitfall . This was a wonderful game where I played as a little man in green pants known as Harry.
  • I spent my time jumping over scorpions, using vines to swing over logs, and trying to avoid being eaten by crocodiles.
  • I felt super excited on that day.
  • One could see the expression of happiness on my face every time I was holding my toy.
  • I loved being able to play whatever games I wanted and spent hours doing so.

Concluding the cue card

In the end, I would say that it is one of the childhood memories that I would never let go of. Even as an adult, I still think about my favourite toy.

7-8 Band Answer

I had many toys in my childhood. My favourite childhood toy, without a doubt, has to be a remote-controlled car. I got it from a McDonald’s restaurant under their “Happy Meals” campaign. In fact, I desperately wanted to collect all the toys from each series in Happy Meals.

I vividly remember it was packed in a beautiful yellow box when the restaurant staff gave it to me. The toy was red in colour and I used to spend hours playing with it. I liked this toy because I could take it with me everywhere and slept with it too. There was also a music system in my car which played my favourite rhymes.

The car was so fascinated that I discharged the batteries in just a few hours. I called my friends to play with it. They all cherished playing with the car. As I recall, once I took it to school and my mother yelled at me when I came back home.

Also, I was very possessive about my car and never used to let anyone touch it. I have never considered offering it to my younger cousins. I remember playing with it non stop for days and it has always been my favourite of all time toys.

However, now it’s lost somewhere, but neither lost in my memories nor my heart.

Follow-up (9 Band)

IELTS Speaking Part-3 Describe a toy you liked in your childhood follow up questions :

1. What is the difference between girls’ and boys’ toys?

The girls’ toys are differentiated with physical attractiveness, nurturance, and domestic skill such as Barbie dolls, ballerina costumes, makeup, jewellery etc. Whereas, boys’ toys are rated as aggressive, exciting, and somewhat dangerous such as wrestlers, soldiers, guns, etc. As boys and girls play with different kinds of toys, it is interesting to see the impact of these differences in their play experiences.

2. Do you think toys really help in children’s development?

Toys play an important role in the lives of young children. They stimulate the development of cognitive skills and nurture their creativity and imagination . Educational toys specifically can help  develop problem-solving skills and teach about conflict resolution.

3. Does modern technology have an influence on children’s toys?

Technology always has a deep influence on the type of toys children play with. Most toys now have computer chips, memory, voice recognition, and interactive connectivity that has completely changed the landscape of play.

4. Have we lost our hand skills such as sewing?

In the race of modernisation, we’ve certainly lost our Sewing hand skills. Today, there are college-educated, smart women who have no hand skills whatsoever. I think people lack the patience and self-discipline to make any progress in learning skills such as sewing.

5. What toys are popular with kids in India today?

Following toys are most popular among kings in India:

  • Convertible Robot Car
  • Thanjavur Dolls
  • Funskool Jenga
  • Hot Wheels Car Track Set
  • Rubik’s Cube
  • Classic Chess

6. In general, do children today have many toys?

Most families have too many toys in India . Children are easily overwhelmed with choice, and generally, a child who is unsure of what to play with often ends up playing with nothing at all. From my perspective, I think fewer toys allow children to love books, music, colouring, and painting. They can spend more time outside the house and engage in physical activities.

7. Do you think playing with electronic toys has a good influence on kids?

Indeed, electronic toys acquaint kids with new technology. I think good quality electronic toys do more than just entertain – they make learning fun by captivating children’s attention with colours, sounds and interactive elements.

8. Do you think there are some toys that are only suitable for girls and some that are only suitable for boys?

Some toys such as slot car racers, radio-controlled cars, electric trains, wrestling figures and video games are only suitable for boys. Whereas, Barbie dollhouse, Bellarina costume, Pink ice skates are some of the toys only suitable for girls.

9. Which do you think is better, for children to play with toy alone or with other kids?

I think playing alone is preferably better than playing with others due to the following reasons:

  • Playing alone fosters imagination .
  • It develops a strong sense of independence in children so that they don’t need anyone around to be happy.
  • Playing by themselves brings a sense of calmness .
  • Playing alone allows children to be creative without criticism from others.

10. Do you think parents should encourage their children to share their toys with other kids?

It is very important for parents to encourage the habit of sharing amongst their children. Sharing teaches children about compromise and fairness . They learn that if we give our toys to other kids, we can get their toys to play with in return. I feel that when parents  model good sharing  in the family, it gives their children an ideal example to follow.

11. How are toys today different to toys of the past?

There are many differences between toys from the past and present. Earlier toys were usually made from wood, metal, or cardboard and they were mostly handmade . Modern toys are made from plastic, nylon or foam and are produced in large factories. Toys from the past were often unsafe as some had sharp edges and were made from unsafe materials. But nowadays, there are strict rules in place to make sure toys are very safe to play with.

12. How do you think toys will change in the future?

As we imagine the future of play, there are plenty of factors that will influence its evolution. I think Artificial intelligence, 3D printing and augmented reality   are changing the ways new toys are being made and how we interact with them . I feel that smart toys will learn from children and provide an adaptive and more responsive play experience in the future.

Describe a toy you liked in your childhood #IELTSCueCard : Q. How do you think toys will change in the future? 👉In the next decade, toys could foster early childhood development through holograms and other immersive, personalised experiences. — Canadian Immigration Channel 🇨🇦💬 (@cic_talks) January 30, 2022

13. If you were going to give a present to a child, what would you give him?

I would give a child an interactive globe as a present. It would let them explore more about the world while sitting at home. They would download the app to learn fun facts about the planet, cultures and ecosystems on the planet, play games and go on scavenger hunts around the globe.

14. What kinds of gifts do parents give to their young children?

RC Cars, Barbie dolls, Storybooks, T-shirts, Shoes and Watches are the kind of gifts that parents give to their young children. They anticipate the desires and act in a way that serves the child’s best interests.

15. Is it good to give children too many presents such as too many toys?

I think for children, an overload of playthings and toys can be overwhelming and distracting . They pick up one toy, drop it, and move on. So they don’t learn to appreciate their possessions or feel a responsibility towards them. I believe the children can be too much creative when they have fewer toys to play with.

My Favourite Toy Essay

My Favourite Toy Essay in English

Things like puzzles, board games and pictures can contribute to child development. What do you recommend providing to a child for their development and why? Give details and examples.

Toys are more than just playthings, though, and while they should be fun, they should be age appropriate, stimulating and safe. In my opinion, toys provided to a child should be kept simple and less modern. This essay will discuss some suggestions and recommendations using examples to demonstrate points.

Firstly, a simple toy that allows a child to explore and to use more of their senses and imagination greatly helps in the young ones’ growth and development. This is mainly because it lets the child take charge of the play situation and is the one directing the action. For example, Child Psychologists from USA recommends building blocks like Legos for a 5-6 year-old child which allows them to be creative and spontaneous. Therefore, keeping a toy or a play simple enables a child to discover and learn more.

Secondly, giving a child modern playthings like gadgets or computers should be limited. This is because these technologies affect child’s attention span, instead of learning a certain skill; they are more drawn on what they see in a screen and blinking lights in the screens, thus impeding the learning process. For example, a study made by Psychologists in UK reported that children exposed to televisions, computers and gadgets at an early age are mostly hyperactive and had difficulty in concentrating. Hence, it is recommended not to rely too much with these tools and instruments.

In conclusion, parents should be cautious when buying and giving toys to their children and should remember that the simpler the toy is the more educational and beneficial to their young ones. While we live in a computer world doesn’t mean it will give a higher probability and chance to produce a more intelligent individual.

IELTS Speaking Test Part 2: Describe A Toy You Got In Your Childhood

Ielts speaking test part 2 sample question and answer.

by Jane Lawson at DailyStep.com

Question: Describe a toy you got in your childhood. You should say:

  • What it was
  • When you got it
  • How you got it
  • And how you felt about it .

Answer:  I think the toy that I remember best from my childhood was a toy farm. It consisted of small plastic farm animals, such as cows, sheep and pigs, and a few plastic people – the farmer, his wife and children. It also had fences that you could attach to each other to create fields.

It was given to me as a birthday present by my parents on my third birthday, as they had seen me looking longingly at the plastic farm animals in a toy shop. I can still recall how excited I was when I opened the present.  It is one of my earliest memories.

As soon as I had opened it, I immediately started to set up the farm on the floor. It quickly became my favourite toy. I suppose it was a toy that allowed me to develop my imagination, because as far as I was concerned, these animals and people were real and they came to life in my head.

As to how I felt about it – well, I really loved it. It was my own little world. I used to spend hours setting up all the little fences and deciding which parts of the floor would become the fields. Then I would put the cows in one field, the pigs in another and so on. I invented stories of what was going on, and I imagined that I was one of the farmer’s daughters, feeding the chickens.

Usually it was a peaceful game, but sometimes I would lose my temper if the animals, particularly the cows, kept falling over. At one point, to calm me down, my mother cut the legs off some of the most unstable cows and said they were now “lying down cows”. Occasionally my younger brother would drive a toy truck straight through the farm, which would make me cry.

I still have the toy farm and my little niece recently set it up again, so it made me feel nostalgic and happy to see the farm back in action.

This sample answer took around 2 minutes, which is the maximum time you need to speak without stopping in Part 2 of the IELTS speaking exam.  Now, try it yourself. What was your favourite toy?

Ralph Waldo Emerson

  • Nature by Ralph Waldo Emerson ›

Nature Summary:

"Nature" is an essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson that was first published in 1836. In this work, Emerson reflects on the beauty and power of nature and argues that it can serve as a source of inspiration and enlightenment for individuals. He encourages readers to look beyond the surface of nature and appreciate its underlying spiritual essence. He also asserts that nature is not separate from the individual but instead is an integral part of the self and can be perceived through spiritual intuition. "Nature" is considered a seminal work in the American Transcendentalist movement and is often seen as an expression of Emerson's philosophical beliefs about the interconnectedness of all things.

The Beauty About The Nature

To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society. I am not solitary whilst I read and write, though nobody is with me. But if a man would be alone, let him look at the stars. The rays that come from those heavenly worlds, will separate between him and what he touches. One might think the atmosphere was made transparent with this design, to give man, in the heavenly bodies, the perpetual presence of the sublime. Seen in the streets of cities, how great they are! If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore; and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God which had been shown! But every night come out these envoys of beauty and light the universe with their admonishing smile.

The Stars Awaken a Certain Reverence, Because Though Always Present, They Are Inaccessible;

but all natural objects make a kindred impression when the mind is open to their influence. Nature never wears a mean appearance. Neither does the wisest man extort her secret, and lose his curiosity by finding out all her perfection. Nature never became a toy to a wise spirit. The flowers, the animals, the mountains, reflected the wisdom of his best hour, as much as they had delighted the simplicity of his childhood. When we speak of nature in this manner, we have a distinct but most poetical sense in the mind. We mean the integrity of impression made by manifold natural objects. It is this which distinguishes the stick of timber of the wood-cutter, from the tree of the poet . The charming landscape which I saw this morning, is indubitably made up of some twenty or thirty farms. Miller owns this field, Locke that, and Manning the woodland beyond. But none of them owns the landscape. There is a property in the horizon which no man has but he whose eye can integrate all the parts, that is, the poet . This is the best part of these men's farms, yet to this, their warranty deeds give no title. To speak truly, few adult persons can see nature. Most persons do not see the sun. At least they have a very superficial seeing. The sun illuminates only the eye of the man but shines into the eye and the heart of the child.

The lover of nature is he whose inward and outward senses are still truly adjusted to each other;

who has retained the spirit of infancy even into the era of manhood. His intercourse with heaven and earth becomes part of his daily food. In the presence of nature, a wild delight runs through the man, in spite of real sorrows. Nature says, — he is my creature, and maugre all his impertinent griefs, he shall be glad with me. Not the sun or the summer alone, but every hour and season yields its tribute of delight; for every hour and change corresponds to and authorizes a different state of the mind, from breathless noon to grimmest midnight.

Nature is a setting that fits equally well a comic or a mourning piece. In good health, the air is a cordial of incredible virtue. Crossing a bare common, in snow puddles, at twilight, under a clouded sky, without having in my thoughts any occurrence of special good fortune, I have enjoyed a perfect exhilaration. I am glad to the brink of fear. In the woods too, a man casts off his years, as the snake his slough, and at what period soever of life, is always a child. In the woods, is perpetual youth. Within these plantations of God, a decorum and sanctity reign, a perennial festival is dressed, and the guest sees not how he should tire of them in a thousand years. In the woods, we return to reason and faith.

There I feel that nothing can befall me in life,

— no disgrace, no calamity, (leaving me my eyes,) which nature cannot repair. Standing on the bare ground, — my head bathed by the blithe air, and uplifted into infinite space, — all mean egotism vanishes. I become a transparent eye-ball; I am nothing; I see all; the currents of the Universal Being circulate through me; I am part or particle of God. The name of the nearest friend sounds then foreign and accidental: to be brothers, to be acquaintances, — master or servant, is then a trifle and a disturbance. I am the lover of uncontained and immortal beauty. In the wilderness, I find something more dear and connate than in streets or villages. In the tranquil landscape, and especially in the distant line of the horizon, man beholds somewhat as beautiful as his own nature.

The greatest delight which the fields and woods minister, is the suggestion of an occult relation between man and the vegetable.

I am not alone and unacknowledged. They nod to me, and I to them. The waving of the boughs in the storm is new to me and old. It takes me by surprise, and yet is not unknown. Its effect is like that of a higher thought or a better emotion coming over me, when I deemed I was thinking justly or doing right.

Yet it is certain that the power to produce this delight, does not reside in nature, but in man, or in a harmony of both. It is necessary to use these pleasures with great temperance. For, nature is not always tricked in holiday attire, but the same scene which yesterday breathed perfume and glittered as for the frolic of the nymphs, is overspread with melancholy today. Nature always wears the colors of the spirit. To a man laboring under calamity, the heat of his own fire hath sadness in it. Then, there is a kind of contempt of the landscape felt by him who has just lost by death a dear friend. The sky is less grand as it shuts down over less worth in the population.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.

Chapter I from Nature , published as part of Nature; Addresses and Lectures

What Is The Meaning Behind Nature, The Poem?

Emerson often referred to nature as the "Universal Being" in his many lectures. It was Emerson who deeply believed there was a spiritual sense of the natural world which felt was all around him.

Going deeper still in this discussion of the "Universal Being", Emerson writes, "The aspect of nature is devout. Like the figure of Jesus, she stands with bended head, and hands folded upon the breast. The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship."

It's common sense that "nature" is everything you see that is NOT man-made, or changed by man (trees, foliage, mountains, etc.), but Emerson reminds us that nature was set forth to serve man. This is the essence of human will, for man to harness nature. Every object in nature has its own beauty. Therefore, Emerson advocates to view nature as a reality by building your own world and surrounding yourself with natural beauty.

  • The purpose of science is to find the theory of nature.
  • Nature wears the colors of the Spirit.
  • A man is fed, not to fill his belly, but so he may work.
  • Each natural action is graceful.

"Material objects are necessarily kinds of scoriae of the substantial thoughts of the Creator, which must always preserve an exact relation to their first origin; in other words, visible nature must have a spiritual and moral side."

This quote is cited in numerous works and it is attributed to a "French philosopher." However, no name can be found in association with this quote.

What is the main point of Nature, by Emerson?

The central theme of Emerson's famous essay "Nature" is the harmony that exists between the natural world and human beings. In "Nature," Ralph Waldo Emerson contends that man should rid himself of material cares and instead of being burdened by unneeded stress, he can enjoy an original relation with the universe and experience what Emerson calls "the sublime."

What is the central idea of the essay Nature, by Emerson?

For Emerson, nature is not literally God but the body of God’s soul. ”Nature,” he writes, is “mind precipitated.” Emerson feels that to realize one’s role in this respect fully is to be in paradise (similar to heaven itself).

What is Emerson's view of the Nature of humans?

ESSAY; Playing Music as a Toy, and a Toy as Music

By James Gorman

  • June 3, 2003

Tod Machover -- composer, inventor, cellist and educator -- has made it clear to me that I am a puritan. This has nothing to do with sex. It's about another sort of seduction, the lure of electronics and computer technology, the easy pleasure of video games, the ultimately hollow virtual world.

Mr. Machover, professor of music and media at the M.I.T. Media Lab, is devoting considerable energy to luring children into the electronic world. He has invented electronic instruments that allow anyone, skilled or not, to enjoy the kind of creativity and collaboration available only to the most advanced players of traditional instruments.

Mr. Machover has not ignored those advanced players. He has, in the past, helped develop instruments like the hypercello, which Yo-Yo Ma used to perform one of Mr. Machover's compositions. But now, Mr. Machover has turned his hand to musical toys, or instruments for children.

He recently came to New York for a performance of his Toy Symphony and to conduct workshops at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Hyperscore, a composing tool he and his colleagues developed, is on display there as part of the National Design Triennial. The workshops allowed children to work with Hyperscore and play two electronic instruments called Beatbugs and Music Shapers.

I went to talk to him and to see and touch the two performance toys because of my curmudgeonly conviction that electronics, even in the service of creativity, could not be good for children, or anyone else for that matter.

I know a bit about electronic toys. I've had my hand in coverage of consumer technology. I have watched children (frequently mine) become completely absorbed in video games. I myself am easily addicted to them. Consequently, in my anti-technology moments, I have the moral fervor of a sinner.

I'm convinced that electronic entertainment can cast a sort of mist over the physical world human beings have bumped around in for so long, making it seem slow and out of focus, compared with the new flat screens.

Even if some game skills are transferable to life apart from the computer, including enhanced visual attention and peripheral vision, as reported in a study in Nature on Thursday by Dr. Daphne Bavelier and colleagues at the University of Rochester, the games create a world, as does television, which in some ways is more appealing than the physical one.

The games can even, it seems, put a veil between mind and body. The Cartesian mind/body division is no longer accepted by science, but video games are Descartes's revenge. The eyes and fingers are allowed in the game, but the rest of the body becomes dead weight -- meat, as William Gibson described it in the science fiction novel ''Neuromancer.''

And yet, researchers in artificial intelligence and behavioral sciences often talk now about embodied intelligence. Dr. Antonio R. Damasio, a neurobiologist at the University of Iowa, who is the author of ''Descartes's Error'' and more recently ''Looking for Spinoza,'' has argued that the mind contains a model of the human body and that the actions of the body inform the brain. ''The mind exists,'' he writes in ''Spinoza,'' ''because there is a body to furnish it with contents.''

In ''The Hand,'' written several years ago, Dr. Frank R. Wilson, a clinical professor of neurology at Stanford, suggests that the hand has molded human language and consciousness during the course of evolution and that its activities are powerfully connected to the development of the individual.

To capture the essence of his argument, he quotes the Canadian novelist Robertson Davies, who wrote that ''the hand speaks to the brain as surely as the brain speaks to the hand.'' You have to wonder, when the hand is clicking a mouse for a couple of hours, what does it have to say?

Not much of interest I would think. But music is something different. Learning to make music on traditional instruments, even in a limited, amateurish way, draws on body and mind together. They function in intimate communion, as they should. You can't make music without thinking and feeling and training your hands. The connection of muscle and motion to rhythm and melody is fundamental.

That's why I was predisposed to doubt the value -- not for music, but for human development -- of Mr. Machover's instruments. When asked whether there wasn't some value to the training in a traditional instrument in which motor skills, muscle memory, thinking, emotion and creativity all came into play, Mr. Machover said that he thought that traditional training for children gave very little room for creativity, which is what he was trying to provide.

''It's so difficult, physically to learn a traditional musical instrument,'' he said. ''The smartest kids take a lot of time just to master the interface -- to say nothing of creativity -- before you're expressing something, and way before you're expressing something individual.

''I think that what I've tried to do in all this work is to emphasize creativity over virtuosity.'' Not that he is against traditional training. One of his daughters is learning the violin.

But, he said, if you could remove obstacles to musical creativity, why not? That's when I started feeling like a puritan. And it became clear that although Mr. Machover is not demanding skill, he is by no means ignoring the body.

The Beatbug is the size of a large orange with two antennas. By tapping on it you give it a rhythm it plays back through a small speaker. You then can modify that rhythm by pressing the two antennae with your fingers, and you can send the modified fragment back and forth wirelessly among a circle of people holding Beatbugs. Without any training someone can start participating in a jam session of sorts.

The Music Shapers are fabric balls with a tone of some sort programmed into them. By squeezing the shapers, you can modify the tone. You use your hands, you are tempted to move your body as you are doing so, and you experience the making of music as an act of the indivisible person, not a mental exercise on a keyboard.

''Everything that we do,'' Mr. Machover said, ''has to feel like a musical activity and not a technological activity.''

When I tried the Beatbugs and Music Shapers I felt a tactile surge of pleasure more than an intellectual one. The instruments are, of course, less demanding than traditional ones, and in the end might be less enriching. But they are not designed as ends. They are designed to offer the pleasure of music before the pain of making fingers do unheard of things.

Who really knows what's going on when the muscles are being trained? Perhaps, if children's hands are speaking to their brains during violin practice, they are shouting: ''Help! Get me out of here!''

I don't know what they're saying when they play with Beatbugs and Music Shapers, but I'll bet they're laughing with pleasure.

  • Essay On A Visit To A Toy Store
  • Post category: Essay
  • Reading time: 4 mins read

Just like books, toys are the best friends of children of my age. I have a great fascination to play with different toys, but of course, after I finish my daily schoolwork.

Final exams were over for three weeks. Now it was the time for the results. As I had worked hard throughout the year, I was quite confident about a good result. As expected, I was passed and promoted to standard fourth with flying colors. My parents were very proud and happy to see my good grades in all the subjects. Just like last two years, they promised me gifts. As I was fond of collecting and playing with different toys, I asked them to take me to a nearby toy store that was opened last week. They readily agreed. However, I had to control my excitement until the next morning.

That night until late hours, I could not sleep. I was very eager to visit the toy store . The next day, I woke up early and got myself ready without wasting any time. I was feeling very impatient to leave for the store with my parents. Finally, that moment came. My joy had no bounds.

As soon as I entered the store, I was astonished to see hundreds of toys on display. It was a big store. There were many salesmen to attend to the customers. One of the salesmen approached us and said in a soft voice, “Good morning, how may I help you?”

Firstly, I decided to find a soft toy for my favorite cartoon character ‘Popeye the sailor man’ The salesman led me to the counter that was filled with different kinds of colorful soft toys. I spotted my favorite character and was very happy to have it in my hands.

Next was the turn of a rechargeable radio control jeep, which my best friend Anthony had. Even I wanted to have the same toy, but of a different color. We went to the counter that was completely packed with small and big boxes of a large variety of battery-operated toys. In no time, the salesman removed a big box from some height. I was thrilled to see my favorite jeep that was packed inside the box. I selected the purple color. It had white bright headlights and red tail lamps. It even had three different sound effects.

Now it was time to have some educational board games. We went to the section of the store that was filled with hundreds of indoor games. I selected games called ‘scrabble-the vocabulary builder’ and ‘monopoly’.

My wonderful thirty minutes visit to a toy store was just about to end. My parents were waiting for me near the cash counter. Daddy paid the bill and we happily came back home. I am very fortunate to have such loving parents.

I Work at a Toy Store. I’m Terrified by What Parents Keep Buying.

I want to scream at them.

Care and Feeding is Slate’s parenting advice column.  Have a question for Care and Feeding?  Submit it here .

Dear Care and Feeding,

I work in an independent toy store, a job that I deeply love. We have toys for all ages, but recently I have been having a big dilemma regarding toys for toddlers. At the store, we have many fantastic products for kids under 3 years old, all of which comply with U.S. safety standards (and many that comply with stricter European/U.K. safety standards). Of course, the biggest factor is that these toys don’t have small parts that could pose a choking hazard. But parents, grandparents, and friends of kids under 3 are often drawn to toys for slightly older kids—toys that don’t meet the same safety requirements regarding small pieces.

I can’t shake the feeling that I’m complicit in creating an unsafe and potentially deadly situation by knowingly selling these toys to families with kids under 3. I understand that many 2-year-olds are past the stage of putting everything in their mouths, and that ultimately, it’s the parents’ call whether they think something is safe for their particular kiddo. But sometimes folks with kids as young as 1 will buy toys with obvious small parts that have clear warnings on the labels. I never recommend these toys to these families. Following my boss’ lead, I usually gently point out that the toy has small parts and isn’t recommended for kids that young, but they almost always buy them anyway. I don’t know if the parents don’t understand, don’t care, or if they genuinely think their kid can handle these toys without trying to chew on them. I don’t want to insult anyone or imply they are a bad parent for giving these toys to their kids, so I drop the subject after one gently worded suggestion. But I want to scream at them that their baby could die if they choke on a tiny bead or screw!

I’m young and I don’t have a huge amount of experience with kids this age. But 1 seems awfully young to be taking your chances. What is my obligation here? Do I need to be more vigilant about warning these families about choking hazards? If it’s an aunt, uncle, or friend purchasing the toys, I’m a little more relaxed since I assume the parents will take a look at the toys before giving them to the kids. But with parents and grandparents, I’m more worried. There’s also the issue of the store’s bottom line—sales numbers aren’t amazing right now and I don’t want to lose sales or chase away customers by telling people not to buy things (I don’t work on commission but our team is small and we all care about keeping this toy store open for as long as possible). But obviously, children’s safety is more important than making the sale. What should I do here?

—Choking Back a Warning

Dear Choking,

I appreciate where your heart is with this question, but this is something you’re going to have to let go of. Assuming that these choke-able toys are indeed going to the tots you see in the store (in some cases a sibling or cousin may be the actual intended recipient), the unfortunate truth is that people are going to make all kinds of parenting decisions that you, the vendor, cannot control. And if you were more forceful in these situations, where would it end? Should you refuse to sell a bike if they aren’t also buying a helmet? Should a waiter stop a parent from ordering a soda for their toddler? Should action figures and marble sets be prohibited for kids with younger siblings? I think you see where I’m going here.

You’ve done your due diligence advising the parents about the toys’ relative appropriateness and danger. Hopefully, the children you’ve encountered will be fine with these toys; and if they experience a near-miss, then the parents will be more likely to heed your advice next time. Ultimately, you have to trust (or at least hope) that the majority of parents will make decisions in their children’s best interests. As unsettling as it may be, this is one of those times when you have to let it go, because you can’t control other people’s actions. As the saying goes, not my circus, not my monkeys…

I’m genderfluid and pansexual, 17 years old, and currently dating a girl. My parents do not know, since the last time I suggested that I might be dating a girl, they flipped out, as I’m biologically female. How should I navigate this situation? When I bring up other friends I have that are LGBT, my parents are fine with it. But when I make the slightest hint that I’m not straight, both parents lecture me on how I am, despite the truth that I am pan and genderqueer. So how should I deal with this issue, respectfully, and without driving friends or family away?

—Please Help!

The first question I’ll ask you, as you consider what to say to your parents, is: Are you safe? For some parents, it’s one thing to know gay people exist in the world and be OK with it, but it’s another thing to have an LGBTQIA+ child. So, I’m going to write my response assuming that coming out to your parents would be a safe option to consider—just know that you don’t have to come out if you feel it puts you at risk. It doesn’t make you any less authentic.

The next question I would ask you to consider is, naturally, whether you want to come out. If you’re not sure, I’d suggest starting with a conversation about their past reactions. “Mom, I was thinking about that conversation months ago where I suggested I might want to date women, and you and Dad seemed pretty certain that I was straight. I’m just wondering: Why was that was your reaction? You’re fine with my gay friends.” That kind of conversation doesn’t obligate you to disclose anything (even if they ask you point-blank, you can deflect), but it can give you some clues as to what they’re thinking. With that additional context, you may feel more equipped to devise a plan for coming out, or you might decide to just ask them to lay off the judgment and assumptions for now.

If you feel the time is right to come out to your parents, spend some time talking to others who have done this before. You might also check out PFLAG or the LGBT National Hotline , where you can talk through your questions with trained professionals. I also found this WikiHow article surprisingly insightful in coming out as pan (it’s written by a licensed social worker). It mentions that you might need to be prepared to explain (and re-explain) what pan and fluid mean. Queer terminology has changed and expanded a lot since your parents grew up, and they may not be fully aware of all the gender identities and sexual orientations there are. Be patient and don’t assume from the start that ignorance equals bigotry.

Ultimately, how much you disclose to your parents right now is entirely your call. There is no right or wrong way to do it. You can also ebb and flow with how transparent you are with your parents, regardless of whether you come out. This is about doing whatever will help you lead your safest and most fulfilling life.

My husband and I have several children. We didn’t plan any, but we also didn’t try to prevent it. It was very “let life determine it.” We’re extremely happy with our family and our current situation, and he agreed he’d get a vasectomy when we were done. I didn’t realize when he went to his yearly that he was serious about getting a vasectomy referral. I was told it would be a few weeks for the consultation followed by a minimum week for the procedure. But for my husband, it went from discussion to done in under two weeks!

The thing is, we never truly had a conversation about being completely done having kids. I’m partially OK with this and knowing I’ll be able to focus on my career and whatnot. However, I feel I didn’t truly get a “vote” and he just decided for both of us that this was it. Although I understand his reasoning, I’m extremely upset and he doesn’t seem to understand my side. We never truly agreed this was our last baby and I honestly feel robbed in a lot of ways! I’m looking for any advice you’re willing to give!

—Miscommunicated or Misunderstood

Dear M or M,

Is the disagreement about his unilateral decision on timing, or is it about being officially done with kids? Those are related grievances, of course, but if the answer is “both,” then it’s no wonder you all are having trouble untangling the situation, because it’s really complicated—you’re fighting a battle on two fronts. And since you’d already informally discussed the vasectomy as a future step you’d take, that is probably adding to the confusion.

In these situations, I tend to advocate for writing a letter to your spouse. It allows you to share complex ideas and be vulnerable without feeling put on the spot with your partner. It’s too easy in a disagreement over hurt feelings to become defensive or feel like you need to prove your point. A letter removes that pressure. Plus, you can write and revise it over a few days, which not only ensures that you’re being clear, but also helps you process your feelings. Once you feel like the letter accurately conveys your feelings, ask your husband to read it. He might then be able to more fruitfully talk to you about the situation—or he might write his own letter about it!

If letter writing doesn’t help you two work things through, seek the help of a professional marriage counselor. They can guide you in rebuilding your communication and trust, and also help you grieve the end of childbearing, which is a real thing for many women! In fact, regardless of how you and your husband repair things, you still might want to find a professional to talk about this transition in your life. There’s no harm in that if it will help you feel at peace and prepared for your next chapter.

I am struggling a bit with how I’m “supposed” to handle custody, in light of my past experiences. I am now divorcing my second husband and we are great with custody! Literally, all the working-together boxes are checked off. I know this because I’ve already had an extremely contentious divorce that resulted in me being a single mom to two kids for eight years. Their dad saw them when I brought them to him and he had zero decision-making power, due to his own horrible decisions. Now I’m navigating the split custody with my recent ex, and he is great.

The dilemma I’m facing is that there isn’t one. I’m used to fighting tooth and nail for kids and feel kind of lacking now. Am I still a good mom if I spend half the week (we are 50/50) with my boyfriend and half the week with my daughter? It’s truly weird to feel like I’m looking for a problem, but I can’t help feeling like I’m skating off into the sunset half the time, when I’m used to doing 95 percent of the parenting. Is this being lazy? For the record, my daughter is happy with the arrangement so far. My ex is now seeing a family friend who has kids of her own and I like her just fine. My partner has no kids and doesn’t ever expect to. We are all in our late 30s to 40s. Is it just being paranoid to expect an eventual fight and worry about laying the groundwork to “win”? What does that even look like?

—Getting Along or Giving Up?

Dear Getting Along,

Divorces can be amiable! I’m sure it feels weird after a highly contentious one, but it is a gift to have a positive, respectful relationship with your ex (and their new partner, too!). Please don’t go looking for trouble and shoring up your “case” for whenever things get contentious—that is a surefire way to cause drama, not prevent it.

Regarding your daughter, you are not slacking as a parent if you only spend half your time with her and if you enjoy your “off” weeks. Enjoy away! My guess is that your first divorce and custody arrangement cemented your self-identify as a dedicated, committed provider to your kids. It was born of necessity, but probably later became a source of pride for you. Now that you don’t have to play that role for your daughter, you are scrambling to identify what kind of mom you are—because your past archetype is no longer needed. I totally get that. I’m not divorced, but I’m a widow, and there are times when I feel an intense determination—almost defiance—to give my kids my all, in spite of life’s circumstances. You almost feel like you have to prove that you don’t need your partner, and that you can do it all and be it all for your kids, and you’ll all triumph in the end. (Cue fist pumps.) It’s a compelling narrative, but it can quickly turn into martyrdom if you aren’t careful. Being fully present for our kids doesn’t mean being with them 100 percent of the time, and successful motherhood is not determined by what you sacrifice of yourself or what battles you wage for them. Yes, these can be ways we act on love, but they are not the only ways.

You are not in a battle this time around, and you don’t need to fight for your child. What if you decided that instead of laying the groundwork to win some mythical future fight, you would commit yourself to cultivating this blended family of love and support? In essence, you’d be fighting (metaphorically) to keep the peace and give your daughter a lasting example of the many ways to be a family. My fellow Slate-ster, Jamilah Lemieux, talks a lot about this kind of approach as a cohost of Slate’s Care and Feeding podcast, and you can get the feel of her 50/50 parenting style here . If you ask me—and you did!—that’s how you’re “supposed” to handle custody in a situation like yours.

More Advice From Slate

I’m working part time from home while caring full time for an 8-month-old baby. (I can work flexible hours.) My husband is an essential worker with long and unpredictable hours, so I’m isolated at home with the baby 99 percent of the time. My days are unstructured and lonely and completely exhausting, and by the end of the day when I finally have a window to work, I’m wiped.

Essay on If I make a robot

An essay about If I make a robot

If I were to create a robot, it would be a fascinating endeavor that would blend innovation, creativity, and the potential to revolutionize various aspects of our lives. The possibilities and applications of robotics are endless, and the idea of crafting a machine capable of performing tasks, assisting humans, and even emulating human-like behavior is both exciting and challenging.

Designing a robot would involve careful consideration of its purpose and functionality. I would envision a versatile and intelligent robot that could adapt to different environments and tasks. It would possess advanced sensory capabilities, enabling it to perceive and interact with its surroundings effectively. With a combination of cameras, sensors, and artificial intelligence, the robot would have the ability to understand and interpret its environment, making informed decisions and adjusting its behavior accordingly.

The robot would be designed to assist humans in various domains. For instance, it could be programmed to aid in household chores, performing tasks such as cleaning, cooking, and organizing. Its dexterity and precision would allow it to handle delicate objects and execute complex actions. The robot could also be utilized in healthcare settings, offering support to medical professionals by monitoring patients, providing basic care, and even delivering medications or supplies.

In addition to practical applications, the robot could have educational benefits. It could be programmed to engage in interactive and immersive teaching, catering to different learning styles and adapting its methods to individual needs. This could greatly enhance the educational experience, making learning more accessible, engaging, and personalized.

Ethical considerations would be of utmost importance in the creation of such a robot. Implementing safeguards to protect privacy, security, and human safety would be critical. Ensuring that the robot adheres to ethical guidelines and operates within the boundaries set by society would be essential.

Moreover, incorporating elements of empathy and emotional intelligence would make the robot more relatable and capable of understanding human emotions. This would allow it to provide comfort and companionship, particularly in situations where social interaction may be limited.

However, it is crucial to recognize the potential risks and challenges associated with creating advanced robots. As robots become more integrated into our lives, concerns regarding job displacement, ethical dilemmas, and the impact on social interactions may arise. Striking a balance between technological advancements and human well-being would be crucial.

In conclusion, the creation of a robot offers immense possibilities to enhance various aspects of our lives. Designing a versatile, intelligent, and ethical robot could revolutionize the way we approach household tasks, healthcare, education, and more. While embracing the potential benefits, it is essential to proceed with caution, ensuring that technological advancements align with human values and foster a positive impact on society.

NPR suspends Uri Berliner, editor who accused the network of liberal bias

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Alain Sherter

April 17, 2024 / 8:18 AM EDT / CBS News

National Public Radio has suspended Uri Berliner, a senior editor who earlier this month claimed in an essay that the network had "lost America's trust" by pushing progressive views in its coverage while suppressing dissenting opinions.

Berliner's suspension was reported by NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik, who said that the senior editor was suspended for five days without pay starting on Friday. A formal rebuke from NPR said Berliner had violated its policy of securing prior approval to write for other news outlets, and warned that he would be fired if he breached those guidelines in future, Folkenflik reported.

NPR declined to comment to CBS News. "NPR does not comment on individual personnel matters, including discipline," a spokesperson said.

Berliner's  essay  in the Free Press caused a firestorm of debate, with some conservatives, including former President Donald Trump, calling on the government to "defund" the organization. Some of Berliner's NPR colleagues also took issue with the essay, with "Morning Edition" host Steve Inskeep writing on his Substack that the article was "filled with errors and omissions."

"The errors do make NPR look bad, because it's embarrassing that an NPR journalist would make so many," Inskeep wrote.

In the essay, Berliner wrote that NPR has always had a liberal bent, but that for most of his 25 year tenure it had retained an open-minded, curious culture. "In recent years, however, that has changed," he wrote. "Today, those who listen to NPR or read its coverage online find something different: the distilled worldview of a very small segment of the U.S. population."

Berliner added, "[W]hat's notable is the extent to which people at every level of NPR have comfortably coalesced around the progressive worldview. The "absence of viewpoint diversity" is "is the most damaging development at NPR," he wrote.

After the essay's publication, NPR's top editor, Edith Chapin, said she strongly disagrees with Berliner's conclusions and is proud to stand behind NPR's work.

COVID coverage, DEI initiatives

Berliner criticized coverage of major events at NPR, singling out its reporting on COVID and Hunter Biden as problematic. With the first topic, he wrote that the network didn't cover a theory that COVID-19 had been created in a Chinese lab, a theory he claimed NPR staffers "dismissed as racist or a right-wing conspiracy."

He also took NPR for task for what he said was failing to report developments related to  Hunter Biden's laptop . "With the election only weeks away, NPR turned a blind eye," Berliner wrote.

Berliner also criticized NPR for its internal management, citing what he claims is a growing focus on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, or DEI.

"Race and identity became paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace," Berliner wrote. "A growing DEI staff offered regular meetings imploring us to 'start talking about race'."

Inskeep said Berliner's essay left out the context that many other news organizations didn't report on Hunter Biden's laptop over questions about its authenticity. He also disputed Berliner's characterization that NPR editors and reporters don't debate story ideas.

"The story is written in a way that is probably satisfying to the people who already believe it, and unpersuasive to anyone else — a mirror image of his critique of NPR," Inskeep wrote.

NPR editor Uri Berliner resigns with blast at new CEO

Uri Berliner resigned from NPR on Wednesday saying he could not work under the new CEO Katherine Maher. He cautioned that he did not support calls to defund NPR.

NPR senior business editor Uri Berliner resigned this morning, citing the response of the network's chief executive to his outside essay accusing NPR of losing the public's trust.

"I am resigning from NPR, a great American institution where I have worked for 25 years," Berliner wrote in an email to CEO Katherine Maher. "I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism. But I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems at NPR I cite in my Free Press essay."

NPR and Maher declined to comment on his resignation.

The Free Press, an online site embraced by journalists who believe that the mainstream media has become too liberal, published Berliner's piece last Tuesday. In it, he argued that NPR's coverage has increasingly reflected a rigid progressive ideology. And he argued that the network's quest for greater diversity in its workforce — a priority under prior chief executive John Lansing – has not been accompanied by a diversity of viewpoints presented in NPR shows, podcasts or online coverage.

Later that same day, NPR pushed back against Berliner's critique.

"We're proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories," NPR's chief news executive, Edith Chapin, wrote in a memo to staff . "We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world."

Yet Berliner's commentary has been embraced by conservative and partisan Republican critics of the network, including former President Donald Trump and the activist Christopher Rufo.

Rufo is posting a parade of old social media posts from Maher, who took over NPR last month. In two examples, she called Trump a racist and also seemed to minimize the effects of rioting in 2020. Rufo is using those to rally public pressure for Maher's ouster, as he did for former Harvard University President Claudine Gay .

Others have used the moment to call for the elimination of federal funding for NPR – less than one percent of its roughly $300 million annual budget – and local public radio stations, which derive more of their funding from the government.

NPR names tech executive Katherine Maher to lead in turbulent era

Berliner reiterated in his resignation letter that he does not support such calls.

In a brief interview, he condemned a statement Maher issued Friday in which she suggested that he had questioned "whether our people are serving our mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity." She called that "profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning."

Berliner subsequently exchanged emails with Maher, but she did not address those comments.

"It's been building up," Berliner said of his decision to resign, "and it became clear it was on today."

For publishing his essay in The Free Press and appearing on its podcast, NPR had suspended Berliner for five days without pay. Its formal rebuke noted he had done work outside NPR without its permission, as is required, and shared proprietary information.

(Disclosure: Like Berliner, I am part of NPR's Business Desk. He has edited many of my past stories. But he did not see any version of this article or participate in its preparation before it was posted publicly.)

Earlier in the day, Berliner forwarded to NPR editors and other colleagues a note saying he had "never questioned" their integrity and had been trying to raise these issues within the newsroom for more than seven years.

What followed was an email he had sent to newsroom leaders after Trump's 2016 win. He wrote then: "Primarily for the sake of our journalism, we can't align ourselves with a tribe. So we don't exist in a cocoon that blinds us to the views and experience of tens of millions of our fellow citizens."

Berliner's critique has inspired anger and dismay within the network. Some colleagues said they could no longer trust him after he chose to publicize such concerns rather than pursue them as part of ongoing newsroom debates, as is customary. Many signed a letter to Maher and Edith Chapin, NPR's chief news executive. They asked for clarity on, among other things, how Berliner's essay and the resulting public controversy would affect news coverage.

Yet some colleagues privately said Berliner's critique carried some truth. Chapin also announced monthly reviews of the network's coverage for fairness and diversity - including diversity of viewpoint.

She said in a text message earlier this week that that initiative had been discussed long before Berliner's essay, but "Now seemed [the] time to deliver if we were going to do it."

She added, "Healthy discussion is something we need more of."

Disclosure: This story was reported and written by NPR Media Correspondent David Folkenflik and edited by Deputy Business Editor Emily Kopp and Managing Editor Gerry Holmes. Under NPR's protocol for reporting on itself, no NPR corporate official or news executive reviewed this story before it was posted publicly.
