Thailand’s Super Charter: Ocean Emerald

With Thailand reopening to tourism, Phuket is back on the wish list of holiday-goers and there are few more memorable ways of cruising the area’s coastal delights than on Ocean Emerald, one of Asia’s most iconic resident superyachts. Words: Chrissie McClatchie. Photos: Camper & Nicholsons.

Designed by Lord Norman Foster, the 41.3m Ocean Emerald had a refit in 2009

A country where natural beauty collides with a rich fabric of cultural influences and a bounty of fresh flavours, Thailand is a traveller’s dream. Here, in the heart of Asia, gentle crystalline waters lap against a shock of pure white sand, framed by lush forests of green that hint at the verdant interiors that await.

It’s a country that promises clear blue skies and the good life, whether that means stripped-back yoga on the beach or five-star fanfare.

As a superyacht destination, Thailand’s appeal has been on the rise for the last decade or more, especially with the investments in infrastructure both the public and private sector have made. It’s hardly a surprise. Along with the natural attractions, easy flight connections from around the globe plus a selection of first-class marinas and other facilities and services are driving this growth.

As we start to dip our toes back into travel, Thailand is emerging as one of the first countries in the Asia-Pacific region to reopen to visitors. And with the advantages of private yacht holidays in this current climate needing little explanation, the realisation that this slice of tropical paradise is now within reach is welcome news for all.

Currently based in Phuket, Ocean Emerald is a renowned yacht for charter with Camper & Nicholsons and her core Thai crew can’t wait to welcome guests back on board to share their beautiful country.

With her distinctive grey exterior and sweeping, curved superstructure, the 41.3m yacht was designed by Lord Norman Foster and launched by Rodriquez Yachts in 2009, and she’s been revitalised following a 2019 refit. As always, she turns heads wherever she goes.

Ocean Emerald’s superstructure is iconic

With a tremendous amount of interior space compared to many yachts of her size, she can sleep 10 guests comfortably in five luxurious staterooms. Her accommodation is wonderfully versatile.

Most notably, two of the lower-deck double cabins can transform into a second full-beam master suite with his and her bathrooms. Such a configuration is a fantastic value-add for two families wishing to charter together.

Her two spacious saloons both enjoy a powerful connection with the surrounding scenery and plenty of natural light through floor-to-ceiling windows. Her interior spaces offer a choice of formal dining options, a bar, games station and an extensive movie library.

As dusk falls after sunset aperitifs on the sundeck, the upper saloon can be transformed into ‘party central’ complete with a state-of-the-art lighting system – it’s the perfect venue to dance the night away.

Other attractions include a fully-stocked toy garage, sundeck Jacuzzi surrounded by sunpads, on-deck barbecue, and ample lounging and dining spaces all protected by sunshades. The alfresco life can be enjoyed any time of the day on her characteristic cascading decks.

SAMPLE ITINERARY

A seven-day sample itinerary on Ocean Emerald will see you arriving at Phuket Yacht Haven or Ao Po Grand Marina to a warm welcome from the captain and crew, then a cool drink and tour of the yacht as you settle in for departure.

Day two will feature memorable cruising through Phang Nga, with its storied landscape of limestone cliffs (karsts), rocks and small beaches.

At anchor off Koh Hong, it’s time to test your kayaking skills as you explore the labyrinth of lagoons while spotting the area’s unique animal life such as fiddler crabs, mudskippers and crab-eating macaques.

In the afternoon, set sail for the Phi Phi Islands, one of the settings that has made this stretch of paradise a star of the silver screen. Away from the crowds, there are plenty of quieter bays to drop anchor for a spot of snorkelling or to find land-based attractions such as caves or sublime viewpoints.

The following day’s destination is Koh Lanta National Park and its wealth of islands, home to dramatic limestone cliffs, winding mangrove rivers and secluded beaches. Together, the sparsely populated Koh Ngai and neighbouring Koh Muk and Koh Kradan form a golden triangle made for island hopping.

On day five, sail to Koh Rok Nok and Koh Rok Nai, two remote islands regarded among the most beautiful in southern Thailand – you’ll feel like you’ve escaped from the rest of the world. Both islands have sublime beaches and are a delight to explore by tender or kayak, while the surrounding reef is an explosion of vibrant colours.

Koh Ha, which means ‘Five Islands’ in Thai, is your treat on day six and divers can come face to face with a rich array of marine life in a central lagoon framed by a large sandy bay. Ocean Emerald Captain reveals life aboard the pioneering vessel

The spectacular Ocean Emerald is wowing visitors at the Monaco Yacht Show and we were lucky enough to speak to its Captain, Erdem Hatip.

Characterized by an ultra-modern exterior design with a sleek profile and aluminium hull and superstructure, the YachtPlus 40 Signature Series is a truly unique approach to yacht design. The contemporary 41 metre yacht makes the most of views and natural light. Captain Erdem Hatip describes the result as “minimalist; simple, with huge rooms and plenty of space”.

Ocean Emerald and its sisterships introduce a ‘third way’ to gain access to a large, luxury yacht, through fractional ownership – a revolutionary concept and one that could take off in the current economic climate. Eight owners will enjoy shared ownership of each Signature Series yacht, making ownership of a luxury superyacht more accessible than ever, with owners sharing crew and maintenance costs pro-rata.

Erdem Hatip has 21 years of experience in the yachting industry, and with his fully-trained crew ensures that each owner and their guests feel at home when aboard Ocean Emerald. “Hard work is the key” he explains, in preparing the yacht and ensuring the highest level of service and hospitality. One guest aboard Ocean Emerald has been the esteemed Lord Norman Foster himself. “He stayed aboard Ocean Emerald for over a week. He was charismatic and very relaxed. I am proud to work with him”.

The next in the Lord Foster designed Signature Series will be Ocean Pearl, due to launch at the end of 2009, with the third yacht, Ocean Sapphire following in 2010.

The YachtPlus fleet will be located in the Mediterranean in the summer and in the Caribbean during winter months.

Charter Yacht ‘Ocean Emerald’ to Make Movie Debut in December

The eye-catching 41m/135ft superyacht ‘Ocean Emerald’ has a starring role in the remake of the 1991 movie Point Break, which will be released in US cinemas on Christmas day.

Spotted filming off the coast of Italy, Ocean Emerald plays a key element in the remake of the cult classic as the setting for one of the film’s wild parties.

The action thriller follows a young FBI agent, played by Luke Bracey, who infiltrates a cunning team of thrill-seeking elite athletes suspected of carrying out a spate of unusual crimes in extremely unusual ways.

Featuring a whole range of extreme sports such as big-wave surfing, free rock climbing, sheer-face snowboarding and wingsuiting, the 2015 version diverges from the original, starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, which focused solely on a group of expert surfers.

Other actors and actresses in the upcoming movie, directed by Ericson Core, include Edgar Ramirez, Teresa Palmer and Ray Winstone.

Built in 2014 by the Italian shipyard Rodriguez Yachts, luxury yacht Ocean Emerald is currently available for yacht charters in Thailand and other nearby countries in South East Asia .

Her distinctive and modern exterior is complemented by contemporary indoor spaces, designed with a strong emphasis on space and light. Large floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to flood into the interior and keeps charter guests in touch with the outside world.

Ocean Emerald has an ultra-modern look designed by world-famous British architect, Lord Norman Foster. This iconic superyacht has a striking silhouette that sees the superstructure line sweep up from the bow and drop down to the stern in a dramatic curve that can’t help but turn heads wherever it goes. This design creates extensive deck space and dramatic cascading exterior staircases, as well as increasing the window size providing an influx of natural light to the interior.

A full interior refit in 2019 saw the introduction of a stylish contemporary design throughout the yacht. From wall fabric to custom-built sofas, every element of the interior was touched on. The main deck salon makes the most of Ocean Emerald’s floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows creating a powerful visual connection with its surroundings. Ocean Emerald’s accommodation is comprised of five suites, in which up to 12 guests can be comfortably accommodated. The master suite is full-beam and is positioned on the main deck with a spacious en-suite shower-room and access to two private balconies on the bow. On the lower deck there are two VIP double cabins, a third double with two Pullman berths, and finally a twin cabin with another Pullman berth completing the offering.

The refit not only updated the style of the interior, but it too resulted in the added flexibility of the lower deck accommodation. Should guests wish, they have the option of transforming the two VIP double cabins into a second full-beam master suite with a spacious lounge area and his and her bathrooms. This is a fantastic value-add for two families wishing to charter the yacht together, or for those guests who simply would like a bit more space.

On the upper deck there’s a second salon continuing the sophisticated modern atmosphere which features a further formal dining option, a bar, game station and an extensive movie library. There’s also a state-of-the-art lighting system that transforms this space in the evening, great for a party, and the adjoining aft deck is ideal for alfresco dining with the option of a retractable shade for those hot summer lunches.

On the sundeck you will find sunpads surrounding the generously-sized Jacuzzi, lounge chairs, a further alfresco dining option, and a bar.

Scenic Group’s luxury, all-inclusive Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours and luxury Emerald Cruises brands have announced a series of updates and expansions across the fleet, including a brand new ocean yacht.

Emerald Kaia

Emerald Cruises’ yacht fleet is growing with the introduction of Emerald Kaia. Merging increased capacity with an intimate atmosphere, the yacht will accommodate 128 guests. The Sky Deck has been expanded, now incorporating a new indoor Sky Lounge and offering an open-air experience with expansive panoramic views. The marina will be enhanced with an interior lounge, additional water sports, and access to swim to the marina from an open-air gym. All cabins and suites have a 10 percent larger floor plan.

An expanded Elements Spa will cater to those who value wellness as part of their escape and reflects a focus for Emerald Cruises on nurturing the mind, body, and spirit.

“Emerald Kaia, with its significant design and amenity enhancements, marks a pivotal expansion for our fleet. Emerald Kaia is scheduled to debut in April 2026, with bookings for consumers and charters opening tomorrow. The vessel will sail the coastlines of the Mediterranean, Adriatic, Aegean Sea, Seychelles, and more.

Scenic Group Fleetwide Design Updates

Scenic Group has also announced a design update to 18 Scenic and Emerald Cruises river vessels across central Europe and France. The refresh of the ships’ main deck introduces new layouts, modern furniture, and day-to-night features to its lounge and specialty dining spaces. The newly enhanced river ships will now offer a taste of Scenic’s ocean cruising experiences.

Scenic Group’s river fleet design updates aim to embody the Cherish the Planet ethos, guided by the brand’s commitment to incorporating sustainable elements alongside exquisite design. Partnerships with renowned designers such as Missoni and Freifrau underscore this approach. “Sustainability isn’t just a feature – it’s foundational to the beauty we create,” Karen Moroney, Director of Project Design for Scenic Group said.

Scenic Eclipse Discovery Yachts

The world’s first Discovery Yachts, Scenic Eclipse and Scenic Eclipse II, are set to receive enhancements as well. Ahead of its Mediterranean season, Scenic Eclipse will undergo a dry dock in April to bring many of the innovations on board that debuted on Scenic Eclipse II. This includes the Senses Spa, updates to outdoor dining venues, and the Discovery Team space.

Guests aboard Scenic Eclipse II will be introduced to the custom-designed Scenic Neptune II submersible and four state-of-the-art SEABOBs. These new sea toys and discovery vessel allow for unique exploration of the ocean and world-renowned coral reefs. Combined with two helicopters, these enhancements emphasize Scenic’s passion for revealing the unseen wonders of the word.

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center. 

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city. 

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

• The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
• Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
• Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
• The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes. 

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.
