Clearing In

When arriving to St. Maarten, all vessels must clear in and out at the Immigration Department.

The Dutch Side

All vessels arriving in or departing from St. Maarten waters must clear in and out with the Immigration Department. This can be done either in Great Bay or Simpson Bay.

The French Side

As the island of Saint Martin is half French and half Dutch, immigration procedures are different on each side of the island. Paperwork must be done upon arrival and departure. The immigration department is located at the harbor terminal on the waterfront in Marigot. Open Monday to Friday from 8:00am to noon and from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, Saturday from 8:00am to 12:00, closed on Sunday. The clearance is free, but the anchorage fees in Marigot Bay are payable on the spot. Present passports, original copies of boat documents and clearance from last port of departure. Tel.: 05 90 29 67 83

Custom & Immigration

The island is a duty-free zone and therefore goods can be imported free of payment and formalities. However, restricted goods such as drugs, firearms and ammunition, explo- sives and so on should be declared to the authorities when clearing in. Both Customs and Immigration clearing in are done by the immigration officials at your port of entry.

In general, visiting yachtsmen are permitted to stay on the island for a maximum period of three months. This will sometimes vary according to your nationality and so it is best to enquire when clearing in. Visiting Crew members from countries on the visa required list without a visa can par- take in the visa waiver program. For more information on this program please visit our website www.yachtingstmaarten.com or e-mail the St. Maarten Marine Trades Association office at [email protected] for more info.

Drugs & Firearms

In keeping with most Caribbean islands, drugs are illegal and the penalties for pos- session are severe. Yachtsmen caught with drugs risk losing their vessel as well as their freedom. All firearms, ammunition and explosives car- ried aboard your vessel should be declared to the authorities when you clear in. Failure to do so could well result in your vessel being impounded if you are caught, together with a fine or jail sentence.

Buoyage System

Both St. Maarten and St. Martin use the American ‘red-right-returning’ buoyage system. Mariners should take care not to confuse the buoys when crossing the Simpson Bay Lagoon from one side of the island to the other. Although the channel across the lagoon can be transited by vessels with a draft of around six feet, yachts should proceed with caution as some shoaling in this area has occurred.

yacht chandlery st maarten

Safety and Security:

All fire arms, ammunition and explosives, chemicals and cash money (USD 11.000,– or more) must be declared with Customs when clearing in. Failure to do so will result in your vessel being impounded and your person be- ing fined and/or sentenced to imprisonment. Drugs possession is illegal and will lead to the same punishment as mentioned before. Fire arms possession is only legal if declared and the owner has a legal permit of his country of origin and the arms are safely secured. In all other cases the fire arms will be confiscated.

There are many reefs around this and most other islands in the Caribbean. It is strongly recommended that yachtsmen consult proper charts at all times when navigating local waters as entrances to anchorages and marinas can be extremely deceptive. Check in the classified section of this directory for local chart suppliers. Excellent cruising guides to the waters of this and nearby islands have been published by the likes of Chris Doyle, Cruising Guide Publications and Donald Street. These guides are very informative but should be used in conjunction with a local chart.

Fee Collection

In addition, to immigration clearance, all vessels entering Simpson Bay and the Simpson Bay Lagoon are by law required to clear in at the Lagoon Authority Collection Office situated in the Police Station just west of the Simpson Bay Bridge and pay the indebted Bridge, Harbor and Clearance Fees. All fees are immediately due and payable upon arrival. The Clearance Fees are:

  • $5 for boats up to 99 gross tons,
  • $10 for boats of 100 to 499 gross tons,

A fee is asked for boats staying at anchor. The bridge fees are payable on clearing out from the lagoon.

The office telephone number is +1(721) 545-3183 or via the Simpson Bay Police Station +1(721) 545-5500 Documents to present when Clearing your Vessel In:

  • The Clearance Documents of your last Port of Departure
  • The Immigration Clearance Documents
  • The Customs Clearance Documents
  • The Vessel Registry Document

All vessels have to receive clearance from Immigration, Customs and the Lagoon Authority before departing to their next harbor of destination. Failure to do so will result in unforeseen delays and fines.

Police Dock

The Police Dock situated in the channel of the Simpson Bay Bridge, can only be used by dinghies that come to the Police Station for the services of the Police; Immigration; Customs or the Simpson Bay Lagoon Authority. It can be used for pick ups and drop-off’s but no tenders should be left here unattended for any length of time. It is also an active ferry dock.

VISA WAIVER PROGRAM FOR YACHT CREW

Visiting Crew members from countries on the visa required list, without a Dutch Caribbean Visa, or a Multiple Entry – Shengin, US or Canadian Visa, can partake in the visa waiver program through the services of a registered agent.

Bridge Info

yacht chandlery st maarten

Simpson Bay Bridge

This is the main access into and out of Simpson Bay Lagoon from the Dutch side of the island. The Bridge is located in Simpson Bay and will accommodate vessels up to a maximum beam of 56 feet and a maximum draft of 17 feet. When the bridge is closed there is 8.6 feet clearance in the port channel and 8 feet clearance in the starboard channel. Note: Clearance may vary depending on the state of the tide

Speed Limit:

In the bridge channel, fare ways and in the Lagoon a 5-mph speed limit is in force for all vessels. Anchorage zones and marinas fall under “no wake zones”. The buoyage system used is the “red-right-returning” American system.

Transiting:

No anchorage is allowed in the fare ways. The access fare way from sea to the bridge channel should always stay open. The inbound traffic should position their vessels along side the fare way so the outbound traffic has free passage to sea. Behind the airport strip in the lagoon there is a no-an- choring zone.

All mariners must hail the Bridge Operator before transiting either Bridge on St. Maarten, to make your intentions clear. The Bridge Operators are standing by on VHF 12. Do not shift to another working channel until you have completed the passage of the Bridge.

Special Bridge Openings:

The opening times for the Simpson Bay Bridge and Causeway are listed here. For special bridge openings regarding the Causeway, vessels and brokers should contact their Marina or Agent.

SIMPSONBAY BRIDGE

The Simpson Bay Bridge has a general entry queuing protocol established to facilitate the ease of movement within the lagoon. Please proceed INBOUND through the Simpson Bay Bridge in the following order: 1) Sailing Vessels and small Motor craft (no matter destination) 2) Vessels heading to the North side of the Causeway 3) Larger vessels heading to Simpson Bay Marina 4) Larger vessels heading to Yacht Club Port De Plaisance 5) Larger vessels heading to Sky Port then Palapa Marina 6) All vessels heading to Yacht Club Isle De Sol The entry order is planned to facilitate the ease of transiting the bridge and the imme- diate area of the lagoon so that all vessels can move unencumbered.

yacht chandlery st maarten

Causeway Bridge

The Causeway Bridge spanning the full width of Simpson Bay Lagoon. The Causeway features a two-lane swing bridge closer to the Cole Bay side to allow for vessels of all size to transit each direction simultaneously. In addition to scenic vistas, the Causeway offers a swift connection from the Airport to Marigot or Cole Bay, a bike and walking path as well as a lovely light display. The Causeway opened December 15, 2013, this major change to Island vehicular arteries is a welcome addition.

Our Marinas & Services

A few of the Mega Yacht Marinas

Sint Maarten is a popular destination for megayachts and offers several marinas with excellent facilities and services. A few of the well-known marinas are located on the Dutch side of the island. These marina’s offers a wide range of amenities, including 24-hour security, on-site restaurants, and a fuel dock.

In terms of megayachts, Sint Maarten has become a hub for these luxurious vessels. The island hosts several high-profile events throughout the year, such as the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, which attracts many yachts to the island. Many of these vessels can be seen docked in the marinas of Sint Maarten, and the island has become a popular destination for megayacht owners and enthusiasts alike.

Isle Del Sol - IGY

Isle Del Sol is a private marina community with 40 slips for yachts up to 300 feet and features a clubhouse, pool, and tennis courts.

St. Maarten, offers tapestry of stunning anchorage.

Simpson Bay Lagoon

This 12 square miles inland lagoon is one of the finest anchorages in the NE Caribbean and is serviced by more than half a dozen marinas as well as providing first-rate moorings. The lagoon spans the Dutch/French borders and can be accessed either via the lift bridge in Simpson Bay or the lift bridge in Marigot Bay. See the section on Bridge Times and Information for full details.

Anse Marcel

Marcel has a picturesque marina that lies at the head of a small bay. A channel, running alongside a nice beach, leads to the secluded marina of Port Lonvilliers. There are two classy hotels and a handful of bars, restaurants, shops, a dive shop, and a small chandlery. The whole complex is enclosed on the landward side by craggy hills affording a good deal of privacy.

Great Bay is the main commercial port of St. Maarten, and is where one would ideally anchor if you want to visit Philipsburg. The outer part of the bay is about 30 feet deep, shaling suddenly to just ten feet and then gradually to seven or so feet up to the beach. There are plenty of services, shopping, dining, etc. It is not a good anchorage when the wind is from the south or southeast, and is certainly not a hurricane shelter.

Claiming to have the finest beach in the Caribbean, Orient Bay also has a couple of good anchorages. One location is at Green Cay at the southern end of the bay and the other is at Pinel Island at the northern end. The anchorage at Green Cay is very useful if you wish to use the beach or its facilities including the nudist beach at Club Orient, and the anchorage off Pinel Island offers palm-fringed beaches. There is excellent snorkeling at both anchorages. Provisioning is somewhat limited and requires a short dinghy ride to Cul de Sac due west of Pinel, followed by a ten-minute walk. The sea at the entrance to the bay can be very rough with large waves and so extra care must be taken. Be certain to consult your chart and cruising guide.

Baie de Marigot

The small town of Marigot, the capital of French St. Martin, lies along the shores of this fairly large protected bay, it is also the location of the main seaport for the French side. The spacious anchorage is close to the town quay, with easy access to the many shops and restaurants in this typically French port. A colorful Caribbean market operates from the area adjacent to the quayside and is especially worth visiting for its splendid array of regional fruit, vegetables, and spices. Simpson Bay Lagoon can be accessed from the bay via the Sandy Ground Bridge. Close to the bridge are several marine businesses. Once again, take extra precautions when securing your dinghy – particularly in the evenings.

yacht chandlery st maarten

Simpson Bay

The eastern end of this large and popular bay provides a good, sheltered anchorage. There is a sandy beach and plenty of activity in the form of water sports, day boats, and vessels entering and leaving the lagoon. The close proximity of Princess Juliana Airport means that there is some disturbance from aircraft. However, the bay is close to what is called the Simpson Bay strip filled with good shopping, dining, and nightlife spots.

Oyster Pond

This picturesque lagoon on the eastern side of the island spans the Dutch and French border and is a truly picture postcard anchorage. Access is via a marked channel through the reef and should be treated with caution. Water depth in the outer part of the pond is about 10 feet, falling to 3 feet towards the inner shores. Check your cruising guide for details including the sand bank in the center of the pond.

Baie Grand Case

This wide bay with its long, curving sandy beach is a popular anchorage for those gastronomes eager to try out one or more of the numerous excellent restaurants for which Grand Case is famous. The long, main street of the village fronts onto the beach. In addi- tion to the restaurants there are a number of good bars and a couple of food stores. The anchorage is generally good for overnight stays but can be roily. It is advisable to exercise extra caution when securing your dinghy as thefts have been known.

St Martin yacht charter

Why charter a yacht in st martin.

St. Martin is a small island, but it's packed with plenty of things to do and places to see. The island is known for its award-winning restaurants, mega-resorts, international shopping, cafes, and bistros, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. But only a stone's throw away from the busy streets are beautiful natural scenery and crystalline blue waters that are just waiting to be enjoyed. Thus, a yacht charter in St. Martin is truly one of the best ways to enjoy the island. And with an abundance of itineraries, chartering a yacht is not just an option in St. Martin, but it is a necessary must!

What are yacht charter prices in St Martin?

You can choose from simple monohulls to take you from one beach to another, or a sailing catamaran cruising along the coast, or a superyacht that acts like its very own cruising resort. Whatever fits your fancy, you can find a luxury boat in St. Martin. For prices, an average 45-foot monohull for a group of 6 adults can cost around $2,500 per day, while a catamaran of the same size can cost around $4,200 per day. A superyacht, complete with a VIP crew, all-inclusive food, and activities, can cost around $450,000 for a week's rental.

When is the yachting season in St Martin?

There are two seasons in St. Martin; one is the dry season and the other is the wet season. The wet season is from June to November, as it also falls under the hurricane season, while the dry season is from December to May, making it the ideal yachting season in St. Martin.

St Martin yacht charter for a day

With an abundance of beaches and bays, one full day of chartering around St. Martin is simply not enough, but if you only have time for 6 to 8 hours of cruising, then a full day yacht charter is perfect for getting a little taste of everything on the island. A typical yacht charter for a day takes you to nearby beaches and bays, with swimming, snorkeling, diving, or paddleboarding some of the activities you can experience. If you're traveling as a family, Friar's Bay is for you. It has gentle waters and swimmable waves, perfect for kids to swim in the shore.

If you fancy an adults-only beach, head over to Orient Bay where clothing is optional on the white sand beach of this vibrant area. Alternatively, if you fancy visiting one location with multiple sites, visit Cupecoy Beach with 3 beaches surrounded by limestone cliffs. It is also the last beach before crossing the border to the Dutch region of the island. To end your day on a full-day yacht charter, sip some rum on the deck as you view the beautiful sunset on the horizon.

St Martin yacht charter overnight

An overnight yacht charter is truly a romantic and exciting adventure in St. Martin. From Marigot, the capital, head to Anse Marcel, which is a tropical dream beach known for its upscale class bars and restaurants, perfect for couples and families. From there, head to Pinel Island, a charming, tiny island on the north edge of St. Martin, located on the Marine Park and offers calm, turquoise waters. Anchor here for the night and enjoy watching the stars from the deck.

St Martin yacht charter for a week

Do you have more time on your hands? And do you want to experience the true beauty of St. Martin and its surrounding islands? Then hop onboard your yacht charter for a full week liveaboard adventure. Here is a sample itinerary for your St. Martin one week liveaboard adventure:

Day 1: Grand Case

This small village to the north of Marigot is the gourmet capital of the Caribbean. It would be a shame if you visited St. Martin and did not set foot in this village. Indulge in a French or decadent Creole-inspired meal and stroll around the village, shopping for bread, pastries, and rum. In the afternoon, you can head to Creole Rock for an hour or two of snorkeling, then head back to your yacht to enjoy your first night in the water.

Day 2: Orient Bay

A two-hour cruise will bring you to Orient Bay, a famous beach for its clothing-optional dress code. If you're traveling with kids, you might want to skip this bay and head to Tintamarre instead, where you can have lunch on a white-sand beach and snorkel in shallow waters.

Day 3: Gustavia

Visit the island of St. Barths, which is dubbed as the Caribbean's version of St. Tropez. Shop in the designer boutiques, enjoy a cup of coffee in any of the cafes and enjoy French pastries and snacks in any of the bistros. In the afternoon, head to Colombier beach where a secluded bay is yours for the night.

Day 4: Philipsburg

Cruise for 2 hours and head your way to the capital of St. Martin's Dutch region. This bustling town has a cosmopolitan appeal with its duty-free shopping, chic boutiques, and vibrant nightlife. A must-visit is Front Street, which is a mile-long street filled with designer shops and boutiques.

Day 5: Road Bay, Anguilla

Cruise for one hour, and you'll arrive at one of the most popular anchorages in the Leeward Islands. Road Bay is a laid back and vibrant place, filled with bars and resorts on the waterfront, and home to 7 shipwrecks, making the bay the wreck diving capital of the Caribbean.

Day 6: Crocus Bay, Anguilla

Swim, snorkel, and dive the caves and reefs in this bay, then after lunch, make your way to Prickly Pear Cay, with its white sand beach and colorful reefs teeming with marine life. After lunch, on Day 7, cruise for a couple of hours before you arrive and disembark in Marigot.

The superyacht high season in St. Maarten coincides with the winter months when the weather is generally pleasant, with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (24-30°C). This is the peak tourist season, so the island can be crowded, and yacht charter prices will be at their most expensive. This period is ideal for those seeking a balance between great weather and a lively atmosphere.

Shoulder Season (May and November)

May and November are considered the shoulder seasons, so you may be able to find competitively priced charters, especially for last-minute getaways. The weather is still pleasant, but there may be occasional rain showers, especially in November.

Low Season (June to October)

St. Maarten experiences its low season during the hurricane season, which runs from June to November, with the peak hurricane season being August and October. If you choose to visit during the low season, your yacht charter specialist will track the weather, and there may be a risk of your charter being cancelled in the event of a hurricane.

No matter when you choose to visit St. Maarten, you will enjoy wonderfully warm weather, making it a great destination for enjoying time on the water under the Caribbean sun.

About the random wind.

Random Wind is a 52-foot luxury catamaran, originally built for chartering with 8 guests and 2 crew for a week or two at a time.

Our catamaran offers a lot of space, both in shade and sun. After the 2018 refit, Random Wind now has tons of cushioned seating areas, and every guest has a cushioned seat. The Random Wind also features the first and original Tarzan Swing of St Maarten, allowing guests of all ages to swing into the stunning blue waters!

When the original Random Wind went down in Hurricane Irma of September 2017, we were devastated. In January of 2018, we put an offer on Camille. She was on the hard at St. Maarten Shipyard from the storm and sustained some damage to her keels, rails, and stern. If you go into the photo albums and find the folder called: “Getting the New Boat Ready 2017/2018” – you will see photos of the old Random Wind after the storm as well as the new one through the refit.

Our new Bluetooth speakers forward and aft and can play almost anything you bring. The rails run the length of the boat port and starboard and are seriously sturdy for real safety. Below are 5 cabins and 5 bathrooms. Of course, one cabin is for Anna, one is for booze and sodas, etc., one is loaded with life jackets and swim vests, one has the boutique and one is for guests.

Random Wind is an excellent sailing catamaran for all ages and for any sailing adventure in St Maarten with its open space, comfortable seating, and entertaining features.

Our Mission Statement

Captain Details Coming Soon!

The original random wind.

In 2007 Dean and I bought the original Random Wind, a 47-foot Vagabond made by Bluewater Yachts. It was Dean‘s dream to sail around the world, and we thought we would do this on Random Wind with our two children. The plan was to run the business in St. Maarten for three years while we saved, so we could have plenty of money in the bank to use for sailing around the world – we wanted to be gone for seven years. About two years into the three, Dean and I split – he moved back to the United States and I stayed in St. Maarten with our two children, Nathan and Caroline, at that time they were eight and three years old, respectively. Just after Dean moved back to the United States, the receding US economy started to influence tourism in St. Maarten, and we struggled. Money was getting tight. The kids and I decided we would move onto the boat and try to make it through the hard times. It really was a great life being on the water; taking them to school each day by tender, many trips to the beach, lots of days wakeboarding and waterskiing, and hanging out on the boat with customers and friends. Here is a picture of the Random a Wind anchored off the famous airport as an airplane takes off.

Nathan started sailing in boats called optimists at the St. Maarten Yacht Club and he started doing quite well in races. We thought it was cute that he was winning races against other little children on the island and told him it was a very big world out there and if he wanted to really complete, he had to race in other countries. His first international race, when he was eight years old, was on the island of Anguilla and he came in first place in his age category. It was then we realized he was quite talented. He started racing in other countries as well as St. Maarten and after a few years, we thought he really needed a higher level of coaching so we made the decision after he graduated from fifth grade that he and Caroline would move back to the United States and live with Dean in Yorktown, Virginia – which is surrounded by the waters of the Chesapeake; where there’s lots of sailing. So, in 2013, both of the kids move back to the United States to live with their dad, go to school, and sail and dance. Nathan started sailing at the Fishing Bay Yacht Club in Deltaville, Virginia and both kids went to school public school in the area. Caroline started dancing competitively at the Academy of Dance. To this day, she competes in Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Hip Hop, and Lyrical dance.

My plan was to sell the business and move back to Virginia to be with the kids and after a while, I realized how much I truly love this business and this line of work and decided to hire a manager and full-time crew so I can move to the US and be with my kids and still keep this business. It was going well for four years until hurricane Irma hit St. Maarten on September 6, 2017. I was in Virginia at the time. That is truly one of the saddest memories I can recall. For three days I didn’t hear from any of my friends. I started to raise money to help people on the island – it was all I could do from afar feeling so helpless. On the third day, my best friend Jackie called and said she was OK and little by little I heard from all my friends – although many were homeless and out of work – they were alive.

After six days I heard from the captain of Random Wind. Because it was so long, I had assumed the worst and was so relieved to speak with him and know that he was OK. The Random Wind at this point still had not been located. After 10 days she was found sunk near the dock of the restaurant from which we picked up our customers; in the Lagoon off the dock at Skipjack’s Restaurant underneath three other vessels. The salvage company tried to raise her many times but she would not budge; eventually, she was broken up and hauled off to a watery grave. After several weeks we had raised over $45,000 and sent numerous boxes of food, tarps, medical supplies to the hospital, clothes…. whatever we could send to help people in need. It was all I could do.

Because the airport was ruined – I couldn’t fly into St. Maarten and the frustration started to build. I spoke with a colleague who was also trying to get there, and we ended up flying to Martinique and getting on a boat of a friend to sail up.

The boat was the Belline II. Hurricane Maria had recently passed and devastated the island of Dominica. We decided to take donations in Martinique and deliver them to Dominica. Our captain, a 26-year-old woman, told us we needed to sail through the night so when we got to the water surrounding Dominica we could watch for debris in the sea and how smart that was! As the sun rose, we started dodging trees, all kinds of other debris, Dead animals, etc. It was truly crazy, when we got to Dominica there were military vessels from several countries including the United States there to help. We offloaded hundreds of gallons of water and milk and lots of supplies for the people there; it was truly wonderful. As we said goodbye we headed out to sea, the biggest school of dolphins I’ve ever seen greeted us with jumps and splashes as if to thank us for the Goodwill we had just imparted.

To celebrate, we opened a bottle of red wine. As we sat in the cockpit, I noticed my friends put their glasses down on the table, they were real stemware wine glasses. I hesitated and put my glass down as well and watched carefully expecting it to tip over as we were in the open sea. It did not tip over. I do believe it was at this moment I decided that my next boat would be a catamaran.

When got to St. Maarten, the devastation was something for which I was unprepared. People without toilets, showers, homes… it was awful.

In this picture, I sit and mourn the loss of our home, our livelihood, and for many years, a source of joy and safe harbor through many previous storms.

After a few more weeks, I received my payout and set aside some money on which to live, and started looking for another boat. I drove to Maryland to look at boats. I drove to North Carolina to look at boats, I looked at countless marinas near me. I spent days and days looking at boats online from all over the world to find the right boat. I found a catamaran called Camille who was in a marina on the hard in St. Maarten from the hurricane. She had been knocked off her keels during the storm and sustained considerable damage on the port stern. Camille had been a term charter boat with Trade Winds. I spoke with the broker and the owners and we made a deal. Camille is the identical sister ship to the Billene II. Then the money was transferred, we started the repairs…

Long story short, we started sailing again in April 2018. Once she was in the water we went back to the sunken Random Wind and performed the ceremony by which the gods of the sea and the ledger of the deep would no longer recognize her as Random Wind. Per tradition, we gave good champagne to the sea and had some ourselves to the unnamed vessel. We performed the same ceremony on Camille and then another by which we renamed her Random Wind.

Now Random Wind is a 52 foot luxury catamaran with custom cushions, a Tarzan swing and a barbecue on the stern. We feel so blessed and have had such good times with customers who fondly remember the original Random Wind and new guests who come aboard on a regular basis. Just like in the original Random Wind, we keep a small boutique on board with island type souvenirs and gifts. The profits from which are donated to those who still suffer on St. Maarten. We live by and truly believe: We all Rise Together .

SIMPSON BAY BRIDGE

  • Description
  • Contact Information

Simpson Bay Bridge

The Simpson Bay Bridge is the main gateway for ships into the Simpson Bay Lagoon , St Maarten’s famed natural harbor and home to a large nautical industry from rigging to chandlery.

Though the bridge might seem small compared to its (way younger) sister the Simpson Bay Lagoon Causeway Bridge , it has held a way more important function in St Maarten History . Until the bridge (and the road to Philipsburg along Harold Jack ) were built, the old fishing village of Simpson Bay was only connected by sea to the rest of Dutch side St Maarten . Over time, the bridge had a vital function in developing the Simpson Bay, Maho , Cupecoy and Princess Juliana International Airport areas. The old fishing history of the Simpson Bay is still remembered close to the bridge at the Simpson Bay Fish Market and its statue of a fisherman on it.

The adjacent St Maarten Yacht Club (freely accessible for non-members too) offers a great view of yachts and sailing  ships coming in when the bridge opens. Ships pass by the yacht club balcony within a distance of some meters only. The often large amounts of megayachts and catamarans awaiting the opening times on either side of the bridge are a spectacle by itself.

Its yearly moment of global fame is during the Heineken Regatta  in early March, when during extra opening times many of its hundreds of ships go back and forth along the regatta  headquarters at the St Maarten Yacht Club.

Opening times and VHF channels

The Simpson Bay Bridge opens at • 8.30am (Boats going out) • 9.30am (Boats coming in) • 10.30am (Boats going out) • 11.30am (Boats coming in) • 3pm (Boats coming in) • 4pm (Boats going out)

The VHF frequency is 12. Bridge authorities can be contacted via +1-721 545-5230 / 545-3183.  The average height of the Simpson Bay Bridge is 2.4 meters, but can vary depending on tides. The channel is 17 meters wide and the controlling depth 6 meters.

For more nautical information pertaining to the bridges in the lagoon, please see our dedicated yachting page .

In need of more St Maarten / St Martin yachting information?

The   St Maarten Marine Trades Association  can be contacted for all your questions on chandlery, supplies and crew information. In both Simpson Bay and Philipsburg.

ALDON BEUKMAN — Captain — South African Captain Aldon was born in George, South Africa and grew up in Yzerfontien, a small fishing village on the west coast of South Africa. His parents owned a small shack on the beach so from an early age he was taught to love and respect the ocean, only taking what you really need. Following grade school, Aldon worked as a commercial fisherman, gaining beneficial knowledge of safety practices and proper vessel handling in high seas off the western coast of South Africa. In 2007, just before taking a position on an offshore oil rig, Aldon was presented with an open deckhand position through a friend. He then made the easy transition to yachting and has worked his way through the ranks to gain the title of Captain. Aldon has managed, planned and enjoyed the entire ETERNITY refit in 2018, and excels in creating a pleasant working environment for his crew. A generous and thoughtful attitude guarantee all ideas are heard and ensure the most practical solution to any problem is taken. Aldon strives to turn vacations into adventures, and dreams into memories. Previous Yachts: M/Y G-FORCE(40m), M/Y TACANUYA (55m), M/Y MEAMINA (60m), M/Y SAI RAM (52m), M/Y AVIVA (68m) Interests: Fitness, surfing, fishing, rugby, real estate ROSS O’BIERNE — Relief Captain & Chief Officer — South African Ross grew up in the coastal town of Durban, South Africa, and along with his two sisters and their parents, spent many holidays down the southern coast of the KwaZulu province. After his seaside boyhood, Ross travelled to London to pursue his Finance degree, and here he completed his FSA part 1 & 2. Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled).
