X-Yachts X49 MkII first look: a good boat gets even better

The X-Yachts X49 was already an impressive boat - as you'd expect from the well-trusted brand, but the MKII takes things a step further

Updating existing models is nothing new, but X-Yachts is currently working its way through its whole Pure X range, having already updated the X56, and the X43, the Mk II of which I sailed last years, and loved (YM, Aug 23). The X49 Mk II is following in the same vein as the other two models to have received the treatment.

As noted in that test, this is far more than slapping on some make-up for a cosmetic update. The structure of the hull and deck has been updated to make the boat lighter and stiffer, as well as lowering the boat’s centre of gravity. While the aft hull sections of the X43 were noticeably changed, the X49, being a later model, hasn’t needed such drastic alterations, although strucutral changes have still been made.

The boat has, however, received a new rudder that promises lower drag with more grip. At the front of the boat, the ‘S-bow’ moulding allows for a longer bowsprit with more space to fly either a Code Zero or a gennaker, with a larger slot between headsail and forestay. It also gives a bit more space for a longer bow-roller to keep the anchor clear of the topsides.

On deck, updates include a re-worked helm position, with larger, lifting footrests for the helmsman, and the coaming has been extended to keep your backside out of any water on deck when helming seated, as well as making the positiong slightly higher.

The position of the winches has been tweaked for easier sail handling – there is space to stand ahead of the wheels and handle the winches and clutches without needing to kneel on the side benches. The winches are both powered, and all lines are led aft under ducting in the coaming. The cockpit benches have also been made longer for more comfortable lounging.

Moving aft, the transom has been made more open and welcoming when you first step aboard from the stern, while the deck-height fold down transom has been retained to keep the sleek, open look.

Aesthetic touches include new pulpit and pushpit metalwork, as well as flush hatches and windows for a more minimalist look. These have also been increased in size to increase light below decks.

Other than that, there are a few tweaks to the styling below, as well as functional changes, such as better and easier access to stowage and making a few other features more user friendly and more durable.

It certainly looks like what was already a very good boat has been made even better with the inevitable refinements that can be made once a model has a few years of real-world sailing under its keel.

A last minute change of rules on Covid left us looking for somewhere to take Savvy XP55 that after two years of servicing overdue was in need of some specialist love and care. For the last few seasons we have been trying to find somewhere with reliable professionals and sensible price lists with a long list of bad experiences across the Mediterranean… then we arrived by chance at X-Yachts Sailing Centre. We were hopeful the X-Yacht name was a good sign but really didn’t know what to expect when arriving with some quite significant maintenance issues including a troublesome generator that had been worked on by three different engineers before without success and a long list of essential maintenance and repairs. From the moment we arrived at very short notice to a very warm welcome from George Jason Stella Bill and the team things started to happen, within days a full list of works was agreed engineers had been on board that understood the boat, its peculiarities and were already fixing issues others had attempted and failed to fix elsewhere for over a year. They run a yacht care program which to begin with we were hesitant about having been promised the earth elsewhere and getting very little. Having now experienced it I would thoroughly recommend this. They take care of everything, have the best of the technicians to hand and access to a vast parts network all at near to at cost levels with a simple understandable, and what we feel a very reasonable fee for their management of everything. The concierge like service that the team has given us has made life so easy through a difficult time with global restrictions. Nothing is too much trouble, they care for the boats like they own them, they are sensitive and sensible and never spend our money without discussion. They have also done a great deal more than we had ever expected putting Savvy back to better than delivery condition after some clever modifications. Olympic Marine is also situated perfectly for international travel and has immediate access to a sailing mecca of the Aegean Islands, with the Ionian and Turkey a stone's throw away. In short… these are good and decent welcoming people who do things the right way always. It is just about the only place outside Haderslev that we know we don’t have to worry when leaving Savvy… Our only worry is that having found them we will find it difficult to leave when we stretch our legs further afield! Orcas attack, sink sailing yacht in Strait of Gibraltar

In a frightening attack that has become a trend in the past four years, an unknown number of orcas rammed and sank a sailing yacht in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service reported early this week. They said they did not know how many of the apex predators were in on the attack.

The Alboran Cognac, a 15-meter (49-foot) yacht, was carrying two people when the boat encountered the animals, also known as killer whales, at 9 a.m. local time (7:00 GMT) on Sunday.

The passengers said they felt sudden blows to the hull and rudder as water started seeping into the ship, according to NBC News. After calling for rescue services, the passengers fled to a nearby oil tanker that took them to Gibraltar.

The yacht eventually sank.

The incident was the latest report of orca ramming around the Gibraltar Strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain. A research group called GTOA, which tracks populations of the Iberian orca subspecies, said there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the area were first reported in May 2020, NBC News reported .

Experts are confused about the probable causes. One theory is that it is a playful manifestation of the animals’ natural curiosity. Others believe it may be a fad among the highly social orcas, or deiberate targeting of what they believe to be competitors for their favorite prey, the bluefin tuna.

Experts believe the attacks involve a subpopulation of about 15 orcas that have been given the designation Gladis, Reuters reported .
