Roscioli Donzi 58 Sport Cruise Boat Review

  • By Capt. Karl Anderson
  • Updated: November 20, 2017

At 6 feet 7 inches tall, Bud Koch casts a long shadow on the dock. He spends a great deal of time fishing with his son, who happens to be an inch taller than Bud, so they need a lot of headroom in the salon and belowdecks, as well as a roomy cockpit. Koch has owned and built many boats in different configurations, so when he was researching to build a new one, he had some specific needs for himself and his family.

“I had some wacky ideas and looked around for the builder that could create what we wanted,” he says. “We found Roscioli, and it delivered.” What the longtime builder of Roscioli Donzi Sportfishing Yachts built was a proven 58-foot hull in an enclosed salon express style, known as the 58 Sport Cruise . Bob Roscioli is no stranger to building highly customized fishing boats. He and his established team have built 63 boats to date — a darn good run for any custom builder.

As I walked through Classic Coke with Koch and Roscioli, I didn’t see any wacky ideas. What I did see was a good deal of efficient, commonsense use of space, with a layout that offers plenty of room for comfortable living, plush soft goods and quality components, married with an excellent execution of systems installation and integration.

To get the results Koch and his family were looking for, the team at Roscioli built a complete plywood mock-up of the interior spaces with cabinets, bunks and head areas. This allowed them to get a true sense of how the living spaces would feel and how they could be best sized and used. The mock-up process not only revealed some spatial things the family wanted to adjust, but it also gave the Roscioli team the chance to connect with the owners and build them the boat they really wanted, as well as offer the ability to refine storage spaces and take advantage of underutilized space.

The Salon and Belowdecks Layout

Starting belowdecks, the three-stateroom, two-and-half-head layout offers two full staterooms. The forward stateroom has a raised-island queen berth with storage under and over in outboard cabinets along the ceiling. The head with full shower and custom stone counter-tops is to starboard just outside the door, so it can be shared by guests and crew. Along the port side of the companionway is the guest/crew stateroom with over-and-under bunks and storage under. Just aft of the guest stateroom is the day head.

Along the aft bulkhead to port at the bottom of the companionway stairs is the full galley with two U-Line undercounter refrigerator drawers and two more undercounter freezer drawers. Stone countertops, over-counter storage cabinets, cooktop, a convection microwave, and a stainless sink and stainless-faced bin dishwasher round out the cooking space.

The other master/VIP is aft to starboard across from the galley and features a king berth, the inboard side having the lower hanging locker that opened up the room. The large head is forward.

The Command Deck

The helm deck salon features a centerline helm forward with two large Garmin screens and the CAT engine displays, as well as digital navigation and autopilot. On either side are the fuel transfer controls, power switches, VHF radio, Fusion audio and Seakeeper gyro control. Visibility is excellent, with a stylish custom full-width windshield that has no mullions to block vision.

Starboard of the helm and forward is a lift-up lid that opens to reveal full-length rod storage, an awesome use of space gained from the mock-up process. To port of the helm is all open to go down the stairs to the galley, so there is no direct overhead ceiling in the galley — another mock-up find that really opens the galley to the helm deck so it does not feel as though it is down in a hole.

A large L-shaped settee with huge storage under and ultra-easy lift-up seats to access it all is to port with a custom high-low table. Along the starboard side is a full-length stone-top cabinet with undercounter wine cooler, ice maker, electric distribution panel, pop-up television and two U-Line refrigerated drink box drawers, which are fully aft at the salon door entry.

Mezzanine and Cockpit

Moving out to the mezzanine deck, Koch needed an aft helm so he could see the kites when fishing because there is no bridge deck or tower. Roscioli built a fully functional helm in the starboard corner of the mezzanine with a comfortable custom stool, electronics and full controls. Remarkably, there is enough room to accommodate his height even while standing on the mezzanine deck. Electric teaser reels are mounted overhead in a concealed compartment, and the hydraulic outriggers are deployed directly from the helm.

Ladders were off the list for this longtime boating family, having had plenty of boats with them. “It takes some getting used to, running the boat from down here when you are used to a flybridge,” Koch says. “But my wife didn’t want to climb the ladder anymore, and I didn’t want to be alone on the bridge away from the action. This layout gives me everything we need to fish hard and be safe.”

The aft bulkhead window is another custom piece that Koch required, and Roscioli pulled it off perfectly. It is fully retractable — like a car door’s window — with an airbag system that inflates as it goes down, sealing it off to keep water out. This opens the salon to the cockpit and puts his guests right in the action.

The Engine Room

Moving into the engine room, there are mechanical spaces on both sides with watermaker membranes, main engine electrical distribution, fuel transfer valves and the like. The twin Caterpillar C32 ACERT engines are nestled in the brightly lit engine room with good access all around to inspect and service vitals.

An Onan 21-kilowatt generator is aft to port, and custom Von’Widmann underwater exhausts are in each aft corner of the engine room. As they have always done, Roscioli’s engineers integrate all components to be oversize and heavy-duty. There is nothing dainty about these boats. The performance is also impressive: At 1,600 rpm, Classic Coke is cruising at 31 knots and burning 100 gph; wide-open throttles produce a top speed of 41 knots at 2,200 rpm.

The cockpit is all fishing, and taking center stage is the massive, custom-built pressurized transom livewell. No getting on your knees to get bait from in-deck wells; this transom aquarium will hold a host of bait for their fishing in Florida and the Bahamas. There are large lazarette hatches on either side of the Release Marine Battle Saddle with beefy, positive lock handles, and the Seakeeper 16 gyrostabilizer is positioned beautifully on the centerline just aft of the engine-room entrance.

Classic Coke is an excellent example of the things that can be done when a customer and custom builder come together to build a boat that is not so specialized that it will be hard to sell, but instead create a rig that can cruise, travel and fish at the highest level while giving the owner the things he needs to keep his family involved in a safe, well-built platform.

LOA: 58′ | Beam: 17’8″ | Draft: 4’10” | Displ.: 140,500 lb. Fuel: 1,400 gal. | Water: 181 gal. | Power: Twin Caterpillar C32 ACERT 1,925 hp diesels

Bradford Marine acquires Roscioli Yachting Center

Onewater has sold the roscioli yachting center in order to reduce debt and fund future mergers and acquisitions….

roscioli yachts

OneWater has completed a sale and leaseback arrangement of the Roscioli Yachting Center with Bradford Marine . The Florida-based yachting services provider will acquire the refit and maintenance service operations at Roscioli and all real estate assets, and in turn, will provide support for the OneWater Yacht Group and Sunseeker brands.

“We are proud to have acquired the Roscioli Yachting Center and to partner with OneWater on this transaction,” says John Kelly, CEO, Bradford Marine. “We are excited about combining our adjoining properties and the expanded capabilities this transaction provides us.”

Roscioli Yachting Center is a full-service marina in Fort Lauderdale, providing services ranging from custom carpentry and fabrications to painting and refinishing, and mechanics.

“Roscioli’s comprehensive yacht and mega yacht service offering is a natural complement to the highly regarded Bradford family of companies, and we look forward to a continued partnership for years to come,” says Austin Singleton, CEO, OneWater.

The proceeds from the sale of Roscioli will be used to reduce OneWater’s long-term debt, as well as fund its ongoing plans for further merger and acquisition opportunities.

“This strategic relationship allows us to sharpen our focus on growing our Sunseeker Yacht sales, warranty and service operations, while also strengthening our balance sheet,” adds Singleton.

OneWater Marine is one of the largest marine retailers in the US, operating 97 retail locations and 11 distribution centres. Notably, the boating conglomerate acquired Denison Yachting  in April 2022.

Roscioli 80

roscioli yachts

ytgjun09rosc80525.jpg

There were three items I noticed when I walked into Bob Roscioli’s Ft. Lauderdale office.

The first was a signed poster of Vince Lombardi, the legendary football coach of the Green Bay Packers. The next was a framed image of Rocky Marciano, the world’s only undefeated heavyweight boxing champion. And the last was the message on the mat outside his door: The Spin Stops Here. Looking around the office, I was getting a pretty good insight into Roscioli before I even began my interview.

Like most successful boatbuilders in the competitive world of custom sportfishing yachts, Roscioli is totally immersed in every aspect of his company. “That’s my name on that boat and it’s something I take very seriously,” said Roscioli. I suspected this was more than lip service and was anxious to put the 80 to the test.

Tom Glass, Vice President of Roscioli, showed up on cue and we left the offices and made our way out to the docks. A fully dressed Roscioli 80 is impressive-and massive. Her 144-square-foot cockpit can be loaded with all the equipment a serious angler needs, thanks to the 21-foot beam. The height of the full Pipewelders tower will make you dizzy. And those 51-foot, hydraulically operated outriggers and her considerable foredeck make her a beautiful machine to behold. While she’s sure to be all business when raising fish, this formidable battlewagon has another side-she’s outfitted to the nines for comfort once the rods are stowed, too.

As the electronics technicians tweaked, poked, prodded, and otherwise got the vast array of nav equipment ready for our sea trial, veteran Roscioli skipper Captain John Huard began to make the preparations to get the big boat out of her slip. With a good 45-minute ride down the New River to open water, Glass took the time to give me a tour of the 80.

Again, thanks to that beam, the salon boasts wide-open spaces with plenty of seating and room for entertaining. The portside entertainment center is housed in beautifully finished cabinetry. A comfortable leather settee in the salon is accompanied by a custom-crafted coffee table. A dinette is forward opposite the fully equipped galley that features lots of counter space and a serving island with three stools. This is sure to be a gathering place when it’s time to entertain hungry anglers.

roscioli yachts

The Roscioli 80 has a three-stateroom, three-head layout and includes a captain’s cabin and an additional area for the crew that offers two single bunks. All the accommodations are spacious and beautifully decorated. After all, this is a boat that will be spending lots of time offshore and underway; comfort and fishability are high on the necessities list. As I found here, and everywhere there was joinery-and there’s plenty of it-the fit and finish were flawless. “We decided on all teak with this particular boat but it’s really up to the client,” said Glass, as I admired the satin finish.

roscioli yachts

The engineroom has stand-up space and is accessed via the cockpit. Once inside, it becomes obvious that Roscioli and crew made sure that anyone working in this area would have the kind of elbow room that every hands-on boater dreams about. The centerpiece is a pair of 2,400-horsepower MTU 12V M93 diesels. There is great access to all critical fluid checks as well as maintenance areas on both inboard and outboard sides.

Roscioli also made sure every piece of equipment is completely serviceable to avoid any kind of knuckle-busting, elbow-smacking, or torso-twisting while getting to it. And just as we were about to go topside to the bridge, Glass pointed out the Von Widmann muffler system and the Sea Torque thrust bearings. “These advanced systems are used in addition to our basic sound-insulation techniques during construction, such as foam under the berth areas, salon, and cockpit sole isolation mounts. There’s that double engineroom entry door, along with lots of other methods we use, [that] all help to keep the boat quiet.”

roscioli yachts

Glass and I joined Captain Huard and the five others on the bridge. With all the room up there, it was hard to believe there were eight of us sharing the space. The techies were done with their programming and Huard, using only the port engine, easily maneuvered the big boat down the serpentine river to the ICW and out to the open ocean.

The 80 answered the throttle request by jumping up on plane at 1165 rpm in dead-calm conditions. We were doing 15 knots and sipping a mere 54 gph total. That computes to about a 775-nautical-mile range with a built-in 10-percent safety margin. Impressive, but now it was time to really show off. With a running angle between 2 ½ and 3 degrees maximum, we hit a WOT of 40 knots.

There is something exciting about having your hand on the wheel of a 150,000-pound, custom-built powerhouse like the Roscioli 80 and moving it through the water at that kind of speed. Equally exhilarating is putting her into turns and watching the big foredeck immediately bank like a giant center console. When I was through, I backed her off to 2000 rpm, sat back, and enjoyed the ride at a smooth 33.2 knots.

The Roscioli 80’s performance is matched by the Roscioli company’s exceptional attention to detail, its ability to provide the level of amenities a boat this size and profile deserves, and the vision to make it happen. As Coach Lombardi said: “The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual.” It’s a philosophy Bob Roscioli believes in.

Out of the Centre

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

roscioli yachts

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

roscioli yachts

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

roscioli yachts

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

roscioli yachts

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

roscioli yachts

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

roscioli yachts

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

roscioli yachts

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
