Roscioli Donzi 58 Sport Cruise Boat Review

  • By Capt. Karl Anderson
  • Updated: November 20, 2017

roscioli yachts

At 6 feet 7 inches tall, Bud Koch casts a long shadow on the dock. He spends a great deal of time fishing with his son, who happens to be an inch taller than Bud, so they need a lot of headroom in the salon and belowdecks, as well as a roomy cockpit. Koch has owned and built many boats in different configurations, so when he was researching to build a new one, he had some specific needs for himself and his family.

Roscioli Donzi 58 Sport Cruise Boat Review

“I had some wacky ideas and looked around for the builder that could create what we wanted,” he says. “We found Roscioli, and it delivered.” What the longtime builder of Roscioli Donzi Sportfishing Yachts built was a proven 58-foot hull in an enclosed salon express style, known as the 58 Sport Cruise . Bob Roscioli is no stranger to building highly customized fishing boats. He and his established team have built 63 boats to date — a darn good run for any custom builder.

As I walked through Classic Coke with Koch and Roscioli, I didn’t see any wacky ideas. What I did see was a good deal of efficient, commonsense use of space, with a layout that offers plenty of room for comfortable living, plush soft goods and quality components, married with an excellent execution of systems installation and integration.

Roscioli Donzi 58 Sport Cruise Boat Review

To get the results Koch and his family were looking for, the team at Roscioli built a complete plywood mock-up of the interior spaces with cabinets, bunks and head areas. This allowed them to get a true sense of how the living spaces would feel and how they could be best sized and used. The mock-up process not only revealed some spatial things the family wanted to adjust, but it also gave the Roscioli team the chance to connect with the owners and build them the boat they really wanted, as well as offer the ability to refine storage spaces and take advantage of underutilized space.

The Salon and Belowdecks Layout

Starting belowdecks, the three-stateroom, two-and-half-head layout offers two full staterooms. The forward stateroom has a raised-island queen berth with storage under and over in outboard cabinets along the ceiling. The head with full shower and custom stone counter-tops is to starboard just outside the door, so it can be shared by guests and crew. Along the port side of the companionway is the guest/crew stateroom with over-and-under bunks and storage under. Just aft of the guest stateroom is the day head.

Roscioli Donzi 58 Sport Cruise Boat Review

Along the aft bulkhead to port at the bottom of the companionway stairs is the full galley with two U-Line undercounter refrigerator drawers and two more undercounter freezer drawers. Stone countertops, over-counter storage cabinets, cooktop, a convection microwave, and a stainless sink and stainless-faced bin dishwasher round out the cooking space.

The other master/VIP is aft to starboard across from the galley and features a king berth, the inboard side having the lower hanging locker that opened up the room. The large head is forward.

The Command Deck

The helm deck salon features a centerline helm forward with two large Garmin screens and the CAT engine displays, as well as digital navigation and autopilot. On either side are the fuel transfer controls, power switches, VHF radio, Fusion audio and Seakeeper gyro control. Visibility is excellent, with a stylish custom full-width windshield that has no mullions to block vision.

Roscioli Donzi 58 Sport Cruise Boat Review

Starboard of the helm and forward is a lift-up lid that opens to reveal full-length rod storage, an awesome use of space gained from the mock-up process. To port of the helm is all open to go down the stairs to the galley, so there is no direct overhead ceiling in the galley — another mock-up find that really opens the galley to the helm deck so it does not feel as though it is down in a hole.

A large L-shaped settee with huge storage under and ultra-easy lift-up seats to access it all is to port with a custom high-low table. Along the starboard side is a full-length stone-top cabinet with undercounter wine cooler, ice maker, electric distribution panel, pop-up television and two U-Line refrigerated drink box drawers, which are fully aft at the salon door entry.

Mezzanine and Cockpit

Moving out to the mezzanine deck, Koch needed an aft helm so he could see the kites when fishing because there is no bridge deck or tower. Roscioli built a fully functional helm in the starboard corner of the mezzanine with a comfortable custom stool, electronics and full controls. Remarkably, there is enough room to accommodate his height even while standing on the mezzanine deck. Electric teaser reels are mounted overhead in a concealed compartment, and the hydraulic outriggers are deployed directly from the helm.

Roscioli Donzi 58 Sport Cruise Boat Review

Ladders were off the list for this longtime boating family, having had plenty of boats with them. “It takes some getting used to, running the boat from down here when you are used to a flybridge,” Koch says. “But my wife didn’t want to climb the ladder anymore, and I didn’t want to be alone on the bridge away from the action. This layout gives me everything we need to fish hard and be safe.”

The aft bulkhead window is another custom piece that Koch required, and Roscioli pulled it off perfectly. It is fully retractable — like a car door’s window — with an airbag system that inflates as it goes down, sealing it off to keep water out. This opens the salon to the cockpit and puts his guests right in the action.

The Engine Room

Moving into the engine room, there are mechanical spaces on both sides with watermaker membranes, main engine electrical distribution, fuel transfer valves and the like. The twin Caterpillar C32 ACERT engines are nestled in the brightly lit engine room with good access all around to inspect and service vitals.

An Onan 21-kilowatt generator is aft to port, and custom Von’Widmann underwater exhausts are in each aft corner of the engine room. As they have always done, Roscioli’s engineers integrate all components to be oversize and heavy-duty. There is nothing dainty about these boats. The performance is also impressive: At 1,600 rpm, Classic Coke is cruising at 31 knots and burning 100 gph; wide-open throttles produce a top speed of 41 knots at 2,200 rpm.

The cockpit is all fishing, and taking center stage is the massive, custom-built pressurized transom livewell. No getting on your knees to get bait from in-deck wells; this transom aquarium will hold a host of bait for their fishing in Florida and the Bahamas. There are large lazarette hatches on either side of the Release Marine Battle Saddle with beefy, positive lock handles, and the Seakeeper 16 gyrostabilizer is positioned beautifully on the centerline just aft of the engine-room entrance.

Classic Coke is an excellent example of the things that can be done when a customer and custom builder come together to build a boat that is not so specialized that it will be hard to sell, but instead create a rig that can cruise, travel and fish at the highest level while giving the owner the things he needs to keep his family involved in a safe, well-built platform.

LOA: 58′ | Beam: 17’8″ | Draft: 4’10” | Displ.: 140,500 lb. Fuel: 1,400 gal. | Water: 181 gal. | Power: Twin Caterpillar C32 ACERT 1,925 hp diesels

Roscioli Yachting Center Founder Bob Roscioli Dies

Bob Roscioli, founder and owner of Fort Lauderdale’s Roscioli Yachting Center, has died.

Roscioli, who was a marine industry icon, passed away on Monday, July 27 after being hospitalised with COVID-19, according to reports.

Beginning his career as an apprentice in 1962, Roscioli went on to become a well-known industry figure in the South Florida marine industry.

His career spanned many notable achievements, including the foundation of the state-of-the-art, full-service shipyard Roscioli Yacht Center.

It was here he became known for personally checking each project to ensure the highest quality was maintained, gaining a reputation as a meticulous perfectionist.

In the 1980s, he began building custom sportfishing yachts with Roscioli Deonzi Yachts, a long-held ambition.

A statement released by the Roscioli Yacht Center said: “Bob’s mantra “Today’s the Day” is the way he started every day at the yard. He could be seen walking the shipyard every morning, preparing for the day ahead.

“A true friend to first responders and veterans, Bob was an advocate of providing jobs and teaching those who have served or needed a chance. A true legacy to the marine industry.”

Bradford Marine and Roscioli: What’s New for Crew

Bradford marine acquired the roscioli yachting center. what can captains and crew expect with different ownership, all in the family: a contemporary marina’s legacy grows.

Many people have the option to go home after work, but not yacht crew. Living at work means lounge time is a night in a crew cabin or mess area. To enhance crew life, Bradford Marine’s expansion on the New River in Fort Lauderdale has created a nice space, a “third space,” for their visiting crew, according to Meg Kroll, marketing coordinator at the company. This is just one way Bradford Marine is changing the scene for yachts, crew, and the yachting industry.

roscioli yachts

In an era of large corporations and conglomerates buying marinas and shipyards, the family of John Kelly, and son Michael, bucked a trend when they bought Bradford Marine in 2019. The Kelly family then reversed the corporate trend when they bought Roscioli Yachting Center from OneWater Marine in October.

Both Bradford and Roscioli had been family-owned since the 1960s and now maintain that family status under the family company, Fort Lauderdale Yacht Harbor (FLYH). OneWater does maintain a lease arrangement with Bradford for their Sunseeker Yacht sales, warranty, and service operations.

Crew Amenities at the Forefront

After the outdoor furniture was delivered to Bradford Marine’s new waterfront crew area, Capt. Jon Barrett and some of the crew from M/Y No Bad Ideas , a 130-foot Westport, gathered around a charcoal grill near Bradford’s new gas grill barbeque area under a tiki hut.

“We’ve set up our Kalahari TV,” Capt. Barrett said with a laugh, as he explained that some meals are better with this South African version of culinary prep and entertainment. “This is a great hurricane spot and the crew area is a social spot.”

Aside from being a recreational area with a fire pit, couches, tables, chairs, large grass area, and new trees, crew do some business networking at the riverfront dock, Capt. Barrett said.

“You never know who wants to change positions, or where you might find a good fit for a new crew,” Capt. Barrett said.

Bradford Marine

Chief Stew Xan Barrett and Second Stew Andi Weppenaar, both of M/Y No Bad Ideas , enjoyed the clear, warm South Florida night in new Adirondack chairs with Stew Maretha Van Heerden of M/Y Clic . The stews said they have come out to the crew area every day after work.

“It’s fantastic,” Barrett said. “It’s like they’re getting out of the shipyard racket and more into a marina with the crew amenity area.”

Capt. Barrett said he has noticed the efforts of the staff, even from the President and Chief Operating Officer, Michael Kelly.

“Shipyards can be like a neighborhood where people don’t know their neighbors, crew just walk to the guard gate and then go out to dinner,” Kelly said. “But with this crew area, it’s a place for people to come together, a space so crew don’t have to go out to Las Olas.”

Future plans include a stage, yoga area, movie nights, and eventually, a swimming pool.

Growing With Yachts and Crew

On this same spot on the New River more than 60 years ago, a large yacht was 100 feet and the nearby Interstate 95 was under construction. Dieter Cosman and Charles Blickle Sr. sold and repaired boats at their growing company, Bradford Marine, while Bob Roscioli painted boats as his business grew into the Roscioli Yachting Center next door.

Jimmy Floyd remembers those early days. He graduated high school in 1976, and got a call from his uncle, Jimmie Smallwood, president of Bradford.

“He asked if he would be dockmaster and I said, ‘What is that?’,” Floyd said. “I was 18 and knew nothing about boats.”

Bradford Marine

Now retired from Bradford, Floyd recalls when only a handful of yachts reached 120 feet, and most were 60 to 80 feet. The central road of Bradford’s yard was known as Main Street, complete with wooden pots with palm trees at the entrance to every slip. Floyd believes the Kellys are bringing Bradford back to what it was.

“They are dressing it back up – they came in like tornadoes with a lot of big ideas and people said, ‘Yeah, yeah,’” Floyd said. “Then the Kellys shut everybody up – they did it big and are doing what they said.”

Marina Enhancements, Not Just a Shipyard

Today, Bradford is moving away from the shipyard feel and aims to be known as a full-service superyacht repair facility and marina with locations in Fort Lauderdale and Freeport, Grand Bahama. After the purchase of Bradford Marine and Bradford Grand Bahamas, the Bradford Marine family of businesses crossed the water to the east to buy Pipewelders by Bradford Marine, High Seas Technology, and P&R Canvas.

As the city of Fort Lauderdale wrangles with transportation issues, the Kellys are monitoring how vehicles and trains will cross the New River and working to confirm the choice is not detrimental to yachting. With the east yard in Dania and Fort Lauderdale, the west yard in Davie, and paint facilities in Hollywood, Florida, Bradford is part of three Florida municipalities and keeps an eye to the future.

“We are leaders in the space and we have seen an evolution in both boats and customers. We’re watching the future and meeting the needs,” Kelly said. “We’ve integrated the team at Roscioli, we appreciate their capabilities and now have a team of over 260 skilled craftsmen and women.”

Across the 38-acre property, boat-lift capacity range includes a 70 and 150-ton Travelift, a 250-ton Syncrolift, and a 320-ton Travelift for vessels up to 150 feet. The in-water dockage capacity is 19,000 linear feet of in-water dockage for yachts up to 180 feet, plus 5,000 feet of covered, in-water dockage, and dry dockage up to 3,500 linear feet. The Bradford Marine Grand Bahama facility, 60 miles to the east in the Bahamas, has over 25-feet of draft, unrestricted air draft, a 150-ton Travelift, and a 1,200-ton drydock.

“Our crew amenities cement that idea that we are not a dusty and dirty shipyard,” Kelly said. “We are clean with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) – our focus is on the environment.”

And to address industry concerns that the family could sell the business?

“Everyone has seen that we are elevating yachting, we want to be leaders in the industry,” Kelly said. “A key to yachting is service and that is our focus. We want to be a part of maintaining this industry.”

“At the end of the day, dad and I are here every day, we love boating,” he said. “This is a generational business; it will be in the family for decades to come. There are no other investors. We love this great community.”

Donzi R-58 Express Sportfish

  • By Scott Shane
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

Something seemed wrong as we headed out the cut. A sustained northeast wind blew a steady 15 knots, building up 3- to 5-footers off Ft. Lauderdale. The speed calibration on the GPS read a quick-paced 27 knots as the chrome-bedecked 1,480 hp 12V2000 MTUs pushed us smoothly along, but the tachometers barely nudged 1500 rpm. The DDEC displays showed combined fuel consumption at a mere 40 gallons.

I nudged the large single lever controlling the synchronizer to the recommended cruise of 2100 rpm to see whether the curiously efficient numbers would hold. Under 78 percent load, the burn rate did increase to a recognizable 120 gph, but our test boat now clipped wave tops at 39 knots with nearly 300 turns in reserve. Still surprised, I pushed for the big payoff. She hit a top speed of just over 42 knots—a bit shy of the 44 the builder wants, but close enough to call the target realistic after some expected tweaking down the road.

I turned to Thomas Glass, vice president of Roscioli International. My expression was a conspicuous mix of astonishment and elation.

“We don’t build boats for the timid, he said with a smile.

The Donzi R-58 Express Sportfish replaces the 54 as the line’s entry-level offering. The yard, which Bob Roscioli bought in 1988, builds just three to four boats a year from 58 to 80 feet LOA, seeing to everything including installation of the tower and electronics. Custom quality means the turnaround for a new 58 is about 14 months, not an unreasonable length of time for hands-on owners who want to enter the market around $1.75 million or add to their fleet for days when the Trinity or Broward is snug at a mooring. Our test boat, hull number four, was being delivered to the former.

During our test run in the Atlantic, the 58 offered a performance just as noteworthy as her numbers. Her entry was smooth, and the pitch of her huge foredeck was less than I expected. Her wide-beam modified-V hull allowed her to track hard in turns, as I demonstrated while negotiating a beam sea at 34 knots. Glass encouraged me to turn hard to starboard, a task made simple by the hydraulic power steering system. After a few full turns of the wheel, the 58 executed a U-turn perfectly with no cavitation, no loss of power or speed, no slapping and no skidding of the hull. The large, paneled windshield caught the minimal amount of spray, which was generated mostly by wind.

Another distinct feature of her hull is its flawless navy finish. I looked hard for print-through and imperfections, but found none. The mirror-like quality is the result of a baking process in which the hull is cured in a cocoon-like structure and monitored for four or five days at 140 degrees.

The entire design is low profile, and any Donzi Yachts groupie will have little problem identifying the pronounced S-sheer. While the look is dramatic, the styling did cause me some consternation when transiting to the bow. The nonslip surface is not exceptionally aggressive, handholds are at a minimum and it is a tricky tract to follow, especially when wet. The same is true when venturing forward to the anchor locker with no bow rail. Owners who don’t mind detracting from the boat’s sleek look should add a rail.

Construction techniques amount to light weight and exceptional strength, though at 64,000 pounds she is no lightweight. The 58 has a Divinycell-cored hull with solid laminates at all through-hull penetrations. The longitudinal stringers are single-piece structures also made of Divinycell that incorporate a compression member, run the length of the hull and are fully glassed, not tabbed to the main structure. The stringers are notched and fully glassed in place. Engine stringers have steel inserts and aluminum caps.

The running gear and steering are also built to take a beating. The rudderposts are 21/4-inch Aquamet stock with full shaft logs. The rudder shelf is made from high-tensile aluminum. Exhaust exits via a Soundown system. Shafts are held by custom single-leg struts and spin four-blade Nibral props fabricated by Michigan Wheels.

Our test boat’s performance was good even with the four aluminum tanks (two saddle tanks in the engine compartment, one in the cockpit and one below the galley) nearly full. The 12V2000s have twin turbo setups. Pushing the throttles to the firewall produced a smooth, smokeless and even climb, with rapid acceleration when the second turbo kicked in. I did not look to adjust the trim at any time.

Windshield wipers are not standard on the 58, but I didn’t need them. Even in a head sea, spray was knocked down. Shifting to trolling or live bait speeds was comfortable, and we backed down without vibration. The test boat was outfitted with a swim platform that did kick up spray, as would be expected. Skippers and the boat will weather bashing into head seas at 30 knots, but how often is that really necessary? With short 5-footers on the nose, I found the ride a bit hard at a 34-knot cruise. Go figure.

Although this express yacht is 58 feet, the builder resisted the temptation to cram amenities and accommodations into every available space. The result is an open boat with good creature comforts, including room for an Eskimo ice maker, dual freezers and the customary fishing prep and stowage areas in the space separating the cockpit from the deckhouse.

The 120-square-foot cockpit feels a lot bigger than it is. Freeboard is a comfortable 26 inches, suitable for keeping youngsters in place or wiring fish. Tagging will require a mid-length stick, as the reach to the water is 39 inches. Gunwales are very wide; even a double-digit count of rodholders will not overwhelm them. The cockpit also has a wide gutter system, side scuppers, and heavy-duty hatches and hardware leading to the lazarette.

Options include an open or enclosed bridge and a cruising or island helm. I enjoyed the cruising helm, which positions the skipper farther forward and provides a good line of sight ahead. I think this setup will service fishermen, as well, though the island helm is set farther aft for complete cockpit access and visibility. Accommodation layouts change with the different helm configurations, gearing the berths for corresponding cruising or fishing applications.

Fit and finish are what is expected of a custom-quality yard. Joinery is teak, and the cabin sole is teak and holly. There are no uneven seams, exposed wiring or exposed conduits, and all spaces are painted.

The engineroom is well laid out, housing all machinery along with a wide egress and work area. Huge air boxes are on both sides of the compartment, and high-capacity blowers circulate air and cool the area. Batteries are housed in neatly finished boxes with teak tops, lighting is excellent and 110-volt outlets are conveniently placed. Since each cylinder of the 12V2000 MTUs can be individually serviced, engine hatches are not provided, which is fine short of catastrophic failure. The cockpit engineroom door is 2 feet, 2 inches wide and will allow a genset change if need be. Between the engine stringers is 2 feet, 5 inches of room with 5 feet, 8 inches of headroom. The stringers themselves are 19 inches.

Wiring for ship’s electrical service is neatly bundled. Though all panels are well labeled, the 58 lacks the extensive wiring and systems documentation found on some other boats in her class.

The Donzi R-58 Express Sportfish is a well thought out design built with strong attention to detail. It’s easy to see why the builder is known for standing behind its product.
