Yacht Walkthrough: 68 De Vries Classic Dutch Yacht

Yacht Walkthrough: 68 De Vries Classic Dutch Yacht

August 12, 2019 1:39 pm

Hello, my name is Tom Hugh-Jones with Denison Yachting and today I’m going to show you a 1953 De Vries Lentsch 68-foot motor yacht, DAKOTA .

DAKOTA was designed by famous naval architect Ed Monk and then built in the De Vries Lentsch shipyard in Amsterdam. Most of those Dutch shipyards were taken over by fed ships. So you’ll find the design very similar to fed ships of that era.

This motor yacht was built of quarter inch steel. The previous owner replaced about 70% of that in Hansen yachts in Seattle in 2004. He spent about a half-million dollars doing so and we’ve just had an ultrasound done of the hull and it’s in great shape.

The boat has two anchors and then up on the bow here you’ll see this horizontal windlass that’ll hold up 300 feet of chain on each side. Behind the windlass these two hatches go down into the forward cabin. On either side of them, are separate storage hatches. And each of these port lights was custom chromed with nickel and fastened with these Robertson screws. The teak deck has been cleaned and treated and because she’s a steel-hulled vessel there’s not a single screw in it.

Walking back there are side deck port and starboard that bring you to the pilot house. After the hull refit was completed in 2004, the boat was then purchased in 2005 by famous Malibu interior designer Michael Lee. He then spent another million dollars on a complete refurbishment. The most notable part of the refit was an extension of the flybridge which then opened up all the space below for the salon. The salon has L-shaped seating the 6 on the portside and beautiful teak throughout. It’s the work of a fine shipwright. Under foot is this woven matting. It’s comfortable and insulates the sound. It makes a change from the usual carpet. Overall this is a full beam salon that is spacious, light and has a lovely vintage charm.

Adding to the timeless charm of this boat is this elegantly crafted cockpit in the canoe stern. One of the benefits of a canoe stern is it effectively acts like a bow but in a following sea. The level of joinery here is wonderful. You can see the quality of craftsmanship, the brass, the Samsun post, the lettering in the teak – all done to the very highest level. One especially nice touch is this table. It’s stored vertically here and when pulled out reveals it’s mirror, which gives you a reflection of the ocean. With the table stowed you can see this door that gives you secondary access to the master stateroom. So at the end of a long day, you can retreat to your bunk. Of course when I say bunk, what I actually mean is this beautifully crafted double bed. And if you look at the starboard side of the cabin, you’ll find this cabinetry and the same beautiful woodwork; solid teak in the hands of a master shipper. While on the port side is a sofa. Of course the master stateroom has private access to an ensuite head with a jacuzzi tub. You can see the high quality fittings that manage the both modern and classic. Forward is a second head with a separate shower stall. Over to starboard is this guest cabin which will be a great space for an Irish Wolfhound or a salty sea dog.

Coming up from the lower deck brings you into this cabin which could be used as a dining room or an office. It also contains this very nice NAD stereo system in the cabinet over here. There are windows running full length both port and starboard which drop down in the center to provide cross-breeze ventilation. Underfoot is this carpet which is very nautical and beneath that a classic Teak & Holly Sole.

classic dutch motor yachts

Opening this hatch gives you access to the engine room, which we will revisit later. Forward of the dining cabin is the ship’s galley which is fully equipped with this Viking range, Miele dishwasher and two sub-zero fridge/freezers. It also has a sofa on the port side so you can keep the chef’s company, a plenty of storage in these cabinets. There is also a Splendide washer/dryer.

Finally in the very bow of the boat is this third stateroom with two guest berths. This is not actually a steam room; it’s another head which is currently being used for storage.

Coming back to the upper deck brings you to the pilot house which has been reequipped but her heart remains as it did in 1953. At the center is this original ship’s wheel – solid wooden brass. On the starboard side of the helm, you have the throttles and transmission, side power bow thruster and a Simrad auto pilot. Flank in the wheel, are these traditional engine stop/start buttons. Above the wheel is this handle to rotate the spotlight. On the port side is a Raymarine 120 and these two traditional chart tables.

68 De Vries Classic Dutch

Below are control panels for two Northern Lights generators, 12 kW and 5 kW which is plenty of power to run this boat. When you’re not on generator, you can switch over to shore power. Dakota is powered by a pair of Detroit Diesel 6-71 natural engines that were both rebuilt in 2005 as part of the restoration. These engines will run the boat at around 8-knots with a fuel burn of about 4-gallons an hour.

On the starboard side of the pilothouse, this ladder takes you up to the flybridge. Up here you can appreciate the extra space the extended bridge provides. It’s uncovered for now but there is a frame for a Bimini should you desire one. Back there is a 13-foot zodiac tender powered by a 40 horsepower Honda outboard. And notice there are davits both port and starboard, so it’s easy to launch on either side.

A couple of other points to note, we hauled DAKOTA out for bottom paint in May 2019 and had a survey done at the same time. It shows she’s in great shape for classic. So there you are 1953 De Vries Lentsch 68-foot motor yacht. Steel hull, classic lines, vintage beauty.

If you’d like to know more about DAKOTA or take a look at her yourself, call me. I’m Tom Hugh-Jones, Denison Yachting.

Mcgruer yawl.

The McGruer-built yachts, like the 8-M cruiser-racers, are well known for their quality of build and versatility. This one is a bermudan yawl, built in 1959 (by McGruer of course, to a design by his own hand), and measures 43ft 4in (13.2m), which is enough to cruise with up to six berths.

The build is in mahogany and teak, and the commissioning owner back at the tail end of the 1950s, for added intrigue, was Archibald J Barr, grandson of the famous Charlie Barr, possibly… probably… the greatest yachtsman Britain has ever produced (he was Scottish).

Westward of Clynder was exhibited at the London Boat Show the year after her launch, to show the quality of her construction the pencil stroke of her architect.

The broker adds: “Very sturdy construction, easy to manoeuvre because of her split rigging; she is a good seaworthy in all weather conditions and at all speeds as well as very comfortable even in bad weather! Involved in many regattas, Westward of Clynder has always lived up to her reputation.

Lying: Hendaye, France Asking price: €75,000 Contact:

Fastest wooden 12-M?

Chancegger was built for French ballpoint pen and cigarette lighter magnate Baron Marcel Bich and, says the broker, was often referred to as the fastest timber-built 12-M ever, but unfortunately never raced in the America’s Cup. Bich commissioned American designer Britton Chance Jr to design the boat and had it built in Switzerland by renowned shipbuilder Herman Egger using imported French craftsmen. Such was interest in the challenge in France that the French Navy donated to Bich the Honduras mahogany used in the hull (she’s triple-planked in the stuff).

Chance’s design was for a yacht with 30sqft less wetted area than any previous design and for the lightest 12-Metre to date. It was also the first yacht of that type to have the distinctive knuckle bow that every 12-M designer from then on copied.

Since the 1970 America’s Cup (it was used as the trial horse to France), Chancegger has had several owners and ended up in Australia. The current owner has restored and raced her over many years and has now just completed her last refit in Argentina.

“ Chancegger is superb and a true consideration for any owner looking to sail or properly race a true classic with pedigree” says the broker. With the biggest gathering of the 12-M class planned to take part in Barcelona this autumn to accompany the America’s Cup, the timing is pretty good too. Chancegger measures 62ft 9in (19.1m) on deck.

Lying: Brasil Asking price: $525,000 Contact:

Naval pinnace

“ Atta Boy is a stunning and historic launch with an amazing naval history,” says broker Gillian Nahum. Hard to disagree. “I was impressed by the condition and beauty of this centenarian which has clearly been maintained in tip-top condition during its current ownership”, added Gillian. “It is not hard to imagine an Admiral being swept across a harbour at speed by a rating at the helm.”

The 30ft (9.1m) naval pinnace was built at the JW Brooke yard in Lowestoft in 1915 as one of a number of similar vessels ordered by the Admiralty. Her first duty was to serve Calliope at Chatham, then in 1919 she was sent to Rosyth as a tender to Royalist . According to the Brooke record she was sold in 1923.

A regular attendee at river events including the Thames Traditional Boat Festival , this remarkable launch also took its place at the Jubilee Pageant in 2012 and proudly flies the burgee which all participants were presented with prior to the event.

There is plenty of dry, below-decks stowage, but no sleeping arrangement that would be acceptable to a 21st-century owner. This is now purely a dayboat for the connoisseur. Gillian suggests that a canopy or pram hood would work well to provide all-weather boating.

Atta Boy has a “remarkable turn of speed” from her Rover V8 petrol engine, so could be suitable for use away from the temperate Thames. For a local owner she does have a current BSS (also required for the Norfolk Broads were she to return) as well as a current EA licence.

Lying: Upper Thames Asking price: £89,500 Contact:

Canoe-sterned motor cruiser

“She was a beautiful design but a devil to build.” These were the words of 97-year-old Arthur Frazier when he stepped aboard a newly-restored Merita in 2019, a boat that he’d helped to build 83 years ago as an apprentice to the family boatyard… Frazier in 1936.

The 39ft (11m) Merita is built of pitch pine planks on oak frames as a private motor yacht, although much of the yard’s output was destined for the fishing industry. She’s notable for her pretty canoe stern, with a wheelhouse added in the 1960s.

The new millennium saw the addition of an external helm position, added during her thorough rebuild at Dennetts on the upper Thames, which has made her into a modern, comfortable vessel below decks. The hull, deck and cabin sides are still original.

She now sleeps six with one forward cabin, a master cabin at the stern, and a double berth and a spacious saloon with bunks. There is one heads with a shower. Everything on board is now electric thanks to a 4kVA generator and Merita comes with a new 74hp Sole diesel.

Nicholson time capsule

Stepping aboard the 55ft CE Nicholson yaw Patna for a chance nose around at the Barcelona Puig Regatta in 2015, courtesy of owner and restorer Greg Powlesland, was quite revealing: nothing else is quite like her, from the moment you descend into the cabin down a half-spiral companionway, the steps edged in intricate, original wrought iron.

The yacht is incredibly original inside and out, the subject of a five-year restoration between 2006 and 2010 under David Walkey and owners Greg and his wife Katie Fontana. She was even sporting cotton sails at that regatta.

Patna was built in 1920 of pitch pine planks on oak frames, and her entire history is known. She was conceived as a blend of racer and cruiser, and from 2014 to 2019, toured the regattas of the Mediterranean, winning the Concours d’Elegance at 2015’s Monaco Classic Week . She has been well looked after since her restoration.

Lying: UK Asking price: £750,000 Contact:

Holman’s original yawl

People will always associate the English post-war designer Kim Holman with his popular little cabin sloops in the sub-30ft range; yachts like the Stella and Twister that were built in their hundreds. Holman also drew a number of lovely bermudan yawls in the 35-50ft range, starting with Rummer , his third design in 1957, and first of these larger yawls.

She was built at Whisstock’s for Holman himself a year later, in pitch pine planks on oak and iroko frames, at 35ft 1in (10.7m). Early racing success and excellent press that praised her easy short-handed manners, ensured that at least eight more ‘Rummers’ were built over the next decade or so.

This first Rummer won a handful of races, proving herself storm-worthy as well as handy and, with the wider ‘American-style’ beam, quite commodious for her time – berths for six and 6ft 3in (1.9m) headroom below decks.

Rummer was very recently the recipient of a serious restoration at Harbour Marine Services that ended in 2022, with over £100,000 spent. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the owners are now compelled to sell, providing the chance to own a very well-specced, newly-rebuilt yacht with good historical provenance, easy manners and good accommodation.

Standout superyacht competing at the Superyacht Cup Palma 2024

The Superyacht Cup is back for its 28th edition in Palma from June 19  - 22. As Europe's longest-running regatta, this four-day event will see some of the world's most prestigious sailing yachts battling it out on the Mallorcan circuit.

Initiating the Mediterranean racing season, the event will welcome a diverse fleet of high-performance sailing yachts to the picturesque Bay of Palma. Rose , the defending champion and the first Wally to claim victory in last year's Cup, will return to defend her title. Meanwhile, joining the debutants include the brand new Calabash and many other race veterans making a comeback, like the iconic J class, Rainbow . The renowned Hoek Designs will also make their mark on the course with the duo Atlanta and Vijonera .

BOAT takes a closer look at this year's competitors, beginning with Maximus, the largest of the lineup…

Length: 59m Builder: Vitters Year: 2023

The ketch-rigged cruiser Maximus makes her debut this year and will be the largest yacht to attend since the 63-metre Athos in 2018. Renowned for high-performance designs, this third-largest Vitters build has German Frers to thank for design and naval architecture. Since delivery, Maximus has spent time in the Caribbean and competed in the St Barths Bucket . For upwind racing, the 80-tonne lifting keel draws 8 metres, reducing to 5 metres for manoeuvres. The twin carbon rudders aid in precision steering, keeping sailors on the best course.

Borkumriff IV

Length: 50.6m Builder: Royal Huisman Year: 2002

Borkumriff IV will be attending the Cup without eyes on a trophy. The 50.6-metre two-masted schooner was built in collaboration with the Dutch yard Royal Huisman , to a design by Dykstra Naval Architects and John G Alden. The modern classic features Rondal aluminium plate masts over 50 meters tall and has Rondal carbon fibre booms and gaffs. Between the two deckhouses that outline her profile, there are two open cockpits; the aft one is for steering and sail management.

Length: 43.6m Builder: Vitters Year: 2017

Svea is the most recent addition to the J Class ranks and took her class win at the Cup in 2022. The 43.6-metre sailing yacht was initially penned by Swedish designer Tore Holm in 1937, and her resurrection began when Vitters and Hoek Design Naval Architecture acquired the original drawings. Integrating traditional long keel design with the modern build, Svea’s aluminium hull displaces just 182 tonnes and optimises weight with 80 per cent of the interior cabinetry utilising veneered foam cores. The 53.75-metre carbon fibre main mast will also help performance, with all eyes on her as she fights for another title.

Length: 39m Builder: Vitters Year: 2009

Having cruised extensively in recent years, the Bill Tripp -designed performance sloop Cervo (ex G2 ) is reclaiming her place among the racing elite. Another Vitters build, Cervo’s carbon composite construction keeps responsiveness up under sail. The 2018 refit at Pendennis created an open flush deck offering more cockpit space for the racing crew. Nauta Design reimagined the interiors of this pedigree superyacht, which also features atypical equal-sized staterooms. Her sailing power comes from the 48-metre carbon fibre mast by Southern Spars paired with a refined sail wardrobe from Doyle and a new in-boom furling mainsail.

Length: 39m Builder: Holland Jachtbouw Year: 2012

After a decade-long hiatus from racing, the 39-metre J Class yacht Rainbow is making her return at the Cup. A modern replica based on the legendary 1934 America’s Cup winner, Rainbow , was penned by Dykstra Studios design. She was the first J fitted with hybrid propulsion and power systems. Since delivery in 2012, she has undergone an extensive refit in 2022, which includes a new deck layout and rig, new sails and winches and an engineering overhaul. Now representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron under her new round-the-world racing owner, Rainbow will be up alongside her seasoned J Class rivals Svea and Velsheda.

Length: 38.8m Builder: Classen Shipyard Year: 2015

The flagship of the Hoek-designed ‘Truly Classic’ range, the 38.8-metre Atalante  built by Classen has enjoyed a long period of cruising and is now poised and ready to race again. Her classic lines, traditionally shaped twin deckhouses, and teak capping rails pay homage to the classics. Commissioned by an experienced sailor, she boasts plenty of race-ready features, such as a well-thought-out deck layout, 3Di North sails, carbon rigging and cable steering bolstered by a fully instrumented steering console set. She will compete for the first time against her sistership, hull number two Vijonara.

Length: 38.8m Builder: Pendennis Year: 2018

The 38.8-metre cutter-rigged sloop Vijonara was the second hull to emerge from Hoek Design’s ‘Truly Classic’ series. Built at Pendennis for owners with vast sailing knowledge, she boasts a bowsprit that houses a suite of downwind sails such as Code Sail and A-Symmetric Spinnaker. Vijonara came close to a win at this year’s St Barths Bucket, finishing second in her class. As a Cup debutant, she will join other Hoek designs, such as Atalante , the first hull in the series, and Cervo .

Length: 25.1m Builder: Nautor Swan Year: 2013

Dark Horse (ex Chessie ) is making her first splash at the Cup. As a regatta regular Swan 80, she brings racing pedigree to Palma and will face competition with the slightly smaller Umiko, another yacht courtesy of the Finnish builder. The German Frers-designed yacht includes racing features such as a lightweight carbon hull and deck, high-modulus carbon spars, and a top-spec racing rig optimised for speed.

Length: 24m Builder: Wally Year: 2006

The 24-metre Wallycento Rose is back to defend her winning Cup title after becoming the first Wally yacht to claim victory. Rose was designed in collaboration with Wally and Mills Design for naval architecture and exterior design, while interiors were thanks to Pininfarina. Delivered in 2006, this flush-deck carbon sailing yacht boasts a 45-metre rig and a 3DL self-tacking jib for racing performance. The crew of 24 and an upwind sail plan of 640 square metres also helped facilitate her win last year.

Length: 24m Builder: Nautor Swan Year: 2000

Another of Nautor Swan's 80 series competing Umiko i s making a welcome return to Palma after the last three years of participating. The ultra-fast yacht, which is one of the race's smaller entries, is a German Frers design. Since her launch in 2000, she has undergone various refits to keep her race-ready, including upgrades such as carbon rigging and new North 3Di sails.

Length: 38.5m Builder: Camper & Nicholsons Year: 1933

Last but by no means least is one of the regatta longest serving contenders, the 38.5-metre Velsheda. An icon among the J Class fleet, although not originally constructed for the America’s Cup like her contemporaries, she has made her mark on the regatta scene. Built by Camper & Nicholsons in 1933 from steel for W.L. Stephenson, the chairman of British retailer Woolworths, she was christened Velsheda after his three daughters Velma, Sheila and Daphne. In 1996, the yacht was purchased by Dutch fashion entrepreneur Ronald de Waal, who gave Southampton Yacht Services the job to rebuild her and restore her to racing status.
