A multimillion-dollar motor cruiser once owned by the family behind the Wild Oats XI yacht has been destroyed in a massive fire in Sydney’s north.

Emergency services were called to Woolwich Dock about 8.10pm on Saturday following reports of a boat fire.

NCA NewsWire understand the boat, Andiamo - which is estimated to be worth between $5 and $10 million - was once owned by Sandy Oatley, the son of the late Australian yachtsman and businessman, Bob Oatley.

The family is best known for owning the nine-time Sydney-Hobart-winning yacht Wild Oats XI.

Locals posted pictures of the blaze to Facebook. Picture Facebook

Upon arrival, the boat was found to be fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters worked for some time to extinguish the massive fire, a difficult task given the extent of the fuel load.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said the boat was filled with 4000 litres of diesel when the fire broke out.

“It took so long [to extinguish the fire] because it’s a large vessel, and we had no access onto the yacht itself, it just wasn’t safe to get on board,” he said.

Police have confirmed the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

There are no reports of any injuries.

A motor cruiser has been destroyed at Woolwich Dock.

The Oatley family have been spending time on Hamilton Island for the tourist hot spot’s annual race week, hosted from August 19 to 26.

They are celebrating 20 years of owning the iconic island destination, after the Oatley patriarch purchased the island in 2003 for $200 million.

It is understood two other famous boats usually docked at the Woolwich Dock - where the Oatley’s own the lease - Wild Oats XI and Andoo Comanche, were both docked on Hamilton Island at the time of the fire.

Officers attached to the Marine Area Command have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire.

Anyone with information into the incident is urged to call police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Sydney Boat Fire

28m yacht Andiamo destroyed by blaze in Sydney

Written by Dea Jusufi – BOAT International

The remains of a yacht destroyed by a fire have now largely sunk at the historic Woolwich Dock in Sydney Harbour. Believed to be the 28.4-metre Andiamo built by Azzura, the incident happened on 3 September.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to find Andiamo fully engulfed in flames after they responded to an emergency call at around 20.03pm local time on 2 September.

Fire and Rescue New South Wales (FRNSW) superintendent Adam Dewberry explained that upon arrival the fire was threatening to spread to adjoining vessels until an onsite employee had them moved to safety with no damage.

Fire crews managed to contain the blaze by 6am but the yacht itself was destroyed and later sunk into the harbour. The FRNSW remained on site in case of reignition and to manage any potential pollution. Dewberry said that “over a 14-hour period we had 18 fire trucks and 72 firefighters rotate through the operation”.

The blackened remains of Andiamo were still visible above the surface of the water on Sunday morning when the FRNSW handed the site back to the dock manager. The containment booms that had been placed at the entry to the dry dock are now being used as a mooring to contain any oils and other pollutants.

While tackling the blaze, firefighters filled the vessel with water, which is in part why she sunk. It also understood that she had recently been refuelled, which made the fire more difficult to contain.

Speaking to BOAT International, Dewberry said: “The owner or custodian of the vessel will engage a contractor to salvage the yacht and make good any pollution issues. This will be monitored by our maritime authority.”

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the incident remains unknown. Once the yacht has been refloated and lifted out of the water, the fire will be investigated by the local police with assistance from a FRNSW fire expert.

Cause Sought in Sydney Yacht Fire

Sydney police are investigating a fire that destroyed a yacht reportedly owned by a prominent Australian resort and maxi racing family.

Firefighters arrived Saturday night to Sydney’s Woolwich Dock to find M/Y Andiamo engulfed in flames. Nearby boats were threatened as firefighters got to work.

According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald , the yacht is owned by Sandy Oatley, son of the late Bob Oatley, who owned popular Great Barrier Reef destination Hamilton Island. According to the newspaper, the Oatley family also owns Wild Oats XI, the nine-time line honors winner of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

Fire and Rescue New South Wales Superintendent Adam Dewberry said that crews were able to contain the fire and damage to other vessels was prevented, but that the vessel was ruined and mostly sunk.

“Initial firefighting efforts were to not only extinguish the fire, but stop it spreading to a number of high-value vessels that were moored alongside the motor yacht. A young dockworker on-site at the time moved those other vessels away from the fire,” Dewberry said.

“It took so long [to extinguish the fire] because it’s a large vessel, and we had no access onto the yacht itself; it just wasn’t safe to get on board.

“The fuel loading of these vessels is quite high – fibrerglass, plastics, foams, polyurethanes, any number of things you would associate with any [vessel] of luxury that has accommodation facilities.” The vessel had been filled with 4,000 liters of fuel earlier that day.

Dewberry said that while investigations were continuing, the fire was not being treated as suspicious.

Luxury motor yacht destroyed in father’s day fire – nautilus marine insurance there to help.

Father’s Day celebrations for the owner of the 90ft Andiamo were put on hold with news of a fierce inferno on board their luxurious motor yacht in Sydney.

Numerous triple 0 calls were made on the evening of the first Saturday in September this year as locals and staff of Woolwich Dock in Sydney became aware of a serious fire taking hold on board one of the motor yachts moored within the complex.

Woolwich Dock, once the largest dry dock in Australia, was completed in 1901 and the now Heritage listed complex remains part of Sydney’s working Harbour. The dock is home to a wide variety of vessels as shipwrights and other marine experts continue to ply their trade.

andiamo yacht woolwich

Covered by Nautilus Marine Insurance, the vessel named Andiamo was moored within the dock with no one on board when the fire took hold causing her to later sink to the bottom. Emergency services were quick to the scene with firefighters securing the area. Mindful of the potential for the fire to spread, a Woolwich Dock team member moved other vessels moored nearby away from the fire.

The Nautilus Marine Insurance team were alerted by the owner and initiated an immediate response with expert staff onsite early Sunday morning as the situation was brought under control by the fire department and the area contained by the police.

The Loss Adjustor and Marine Surveyor for Nautilus Marine Insurance made their initial situational assessment by mid-morning Sunday and, as a result of the strategic decisions made in consultation with such bodies as Sydney Ports, NSW Maritime, and the Environmental Protection Authority, immediately commenced environmental impact containment.

Micheal Lieberman, Loss Adjustor and Marine Surveyor for Nautilus Marine Insurance, has a clear list of priorities in situations such as these. “Whilst all salvages are different, the priorities remain clear. Once the actual incident is under control by emergency services, we need to contain the site to lessen any environmental impact. By mid-morning Sunday we had a salvage operator, divers, and a team deploying containment mats and scoops.”

Lieberman was thankful for the support from those involved. “Aside from the complexity of this particular salvage with the vessel wedged sideways across the dock, the operation’s success was due to the professionalism of all those involved. Sydney Ports had containment and absorbent booms in place, the large team of divers were constantly assessing the wreck status, and the staff of Woolwich Dock worked around the clock to assist.”

Natalie Fisher, Senior Account Manager at GSA Insurance Brokers in her capacity as insurance broker for Andiamo’s owner was complimentary of the Nautilus Marine Insurance team and their handling of the claims process. “The response of the Nautilus Marine Insurance team and their contractors has been at a level that confirms their well-deserved professional reputation. The speed that they responded, the constant communication, and the prompt discharge and payment made a very painful experience that much less stressful.”

The vessel was successfully lifted out of the water by the 16th of September. A complex salvage operation made more difficult by substantial water ingress making the weight of a potential mobile crane lift unviable in the time required. With containment booms in place, the vessel was floated by utilising numerous air bags put in place by a team of specialist divers, and guided onto the Woolwich Dock travel lift to be carefully raised and placed on land for forensic inspection.

Nautilus Marine Insurance CEO Lyndon Turner was one of the team onsite on the very first day. “I really do sympathise with boat owners in a situation like this. To see your pride and joy suffering such a fate is an emotional time, which is why it’s so important that boat owners receive support, reassurance, and professionalism through the claims process. Being there for our customers when it really counts is what Nautilus Marine Insurance is here for.”

With the discharge and claim payment being concluded, the vessel will be subsequently broken up for disposal. The Nautilus Marine Insurance Team remains involved in an active management role throughout the disposal process.

2019 M/Y Andiamo yacht fire investigation summary

Multiple failings highlighted….

Image for article 2019 M/Y Andiamo yacht fire investigation summary

The 37m motor yacht Andiamo was completely lost to fire on 18th December 2019. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released its findings. The full report can be read here  with a SuperyachtNews summary to follow.

The NTSB investigation presents some highly relevant findings for the superyacht industry and safety standards on privately owned superyachts.  At 19:21 local time, the fire started, and the vessel was on the seafloor a little over two hours later. The vessel was successfully evacuated, and no injuries were reported. The sequence of events preceding its sinking makes for stark reading.

Andiamo was stern to the dock in Island Gardens marina and undertook day trips with guests in the lead-up. Onboard was the captain, first officer, deckhand, chief stewardess, second stewardess and chef. The chief engineer was on personal leave. As they were preparing for the arrival of a guest, it was noted that the lights were not working in the lower/accommodation deck and the main salon.

The issue was reported, and the captain began troubleshooting the electrical systems; however, the issue was not resolved without the chief engineer on board. The chief stewardess lit candles in the master cabin to continue preparing, which were placed onto a wooden dresser beneath open curtains.

andiamo yacht woolwich

Around 19:20, the interior team noticed a burning smell in the main solon followed by a plume of black smoke, and they shouted fire to the bridge to notify the captain, who was still attempting to fix the lighting issue. After determining that he could not locate the fire, he instructed the chief stew to have everyone evacuate the vessel. No fire alarm was sounding, nor was the decision made to activate the general alarm. At 19:23, the second stewardess placed a call to emergency services.

The vessel was equipped with integrated fire detection and alarm system, with smoke and thermal detectors throughout the vessel spaces. The guest lobby was fitted with a manual fire alarm, and there were portable fire extinguishers throughout. Again, the crew reported that no alarm was sounding. The chief officer and deckhand returned from another vessel and reported what they described as a 'fireball' on the aft deck.

The captain and chef attempted to connect a fire hose and start the fire pump to fight the fire by approaching the galley door from the starboard side; however, they decided that the fire was too far gone at that stage. At 19:24, the crew and only guest were on the dock and alerted neighbouring vessels, and assuming that the fire was electrical in nature, shut down the shore power. The Miami Fire Department arrived at 19:30 and began to fight the fire. With assistance from neighbouring vessels, the fire was deemed under control within two hours, but the volume of water now onboard continued to list the vessel, and it capsized onto its starboard side.

andiamo yacht woolwich

Andiamo was initially classed by the American Beuro of Shipping (ABS) in August 2006. However, this was suspended in June 2019 due to an overdue survey. The vessel underwent a yard period from June to October 2019 to bring it back into class compliance. The ABS documented that the fire alarm and detection system was in an “inoperable state”. The remote fire safety shutdown system, the louvres and ventilation fans in the engine room could not be remotely shut down.

As reported, the ABS returned to the vessel on several occasions. However, the smoke and heat sensors had not been repaired to meet an operational test, and multiple smoke detectors across the vessel failed to provide audible or visual alarms. ABS returned the day before the fire, but the repaired still had not been made.

The owner of Andiamo deferred all maintenance decisions to the crew. While the crew provided investigators with several invoices, there was no record of work on the fire detection and alarm system. The investigation also highlights that no contact had been made with the manufacturer of the fire detection system or specialists technicians in the months after the ABS recommendations leading up to the fire.

As a result of the fire, the Marshall Islands issued a yacht safety advisory on April 20, 2020, based on its investigations of four registered yacht fires during the previous year. The advisory highlighted three major areas of concern: preventing fires, ensuring fire-detection and extinguishing systems are fully functional, and ensuring yacht crews are prepared to respond to a fire. Identified as a fire risk posed by human activity was: “leaving open flames such candles unattended.”

The fire on Andiamo highlights how vital the time given by early smoke and heat detection can be. Without a sprinkler system, the vessel relied on early detection and action from the crew. Without a functioning alarm, or the ability to close louvres, dampeners and fire doors externally to starve the fire, the fight was effectively over by the time they detected the smoke.

Report: Unattended candles to blame for fire that destroyed Benetti superyacht Andiamo

Related articles, superyacht directory.

Lit candles left unattended in a VIP suite were responsible for a fire that resulted in the 37 metre Benetti superyacht Andiamo being declared a total loss, a report has found.

The fire, which took place on December 18, was attended by multiple fire crews but led to the loss of the $6.3m yacht and an additional $480,000 of damage to the Island Garden Deep Harbour Marina and neighbouring yachts. No injuries were reported, and all six crew members and a guest were safely evacuated from the yacht.

A report investigating the incident, which was undertaken by the National Transportation Safety Board, reported that on the afternoon of December 18 the crew were preparing for the arrival of a guest of the owner who intended to stay on board for a few days. However, while preparing the port VIP suite, the chief stewardess and second stewardess noticed that the lights throughout the lower deck and main saloon were not working and reported the issue to the captain.

At 7.10pm, the guest arrived on board but the lighting issue had not been fixed. As a result, the first officer and deckhand left the yacht to prepare another vessel belonging to the owner as an alternative place for the guest to stay.

In the meantime, the chief stewardess illuminated the port VIP suite with three candles, two of which did not have candleholders, and placed them in the centre of a wood veneer dresser directly below a porthole with two curtains. Before leaving the suite, she extinguished one candle in a glass jar, but left the other two candles burning.

Around three minutes later, the chief stewardess went to the galley to get refreshments for the guest where the second stewardess and chef told her they noticed a “funny smell” coming from the main saloon.

The chief stewardess opened the main saloon door to find a four-foot-high plume of black smoke rising from the deck. She and the second stewardess immediately alerted the captain and evacuated the yacht. The captain and chef made unsuccessful attempts to fight the fire but were also forced the evacuate. At this time, the first officer and deckhand returned from the other vessel and reported seeing a “flame ball” coming from the main saloon.

On the dock, the crew alerted adjacent vessels Namaste and C Star , the latter of which attempted to fight the fire with a charged fire hose before getting underway to escape the flames, followed shortly by Namaste .

Fire crews from the City of Miami Fire Rescue arrived on the scene at around 7.30pm followed by the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and fireboats, but by this time Andiamo was already “engulfed in flames,” according to the report.

As the crews extinguished the fire, the firewater flooded the upper decks of Andiamo , causing it to list and capsize onto its starboard side and come to rest on the seafloor at around 9.30pm.

The cause of the fire was ruled accidental and traced back to the candles left unattended on the dresser in the port VIP suite. It was estimated that the fire spread rapidly upward after igniting the “highly combustible curtains hanging above the porthole” and travelling through overhead air conditioning ducts and an open stairway in the guest lobby.

The report also highlighted that crew told investigators they did not hear or see any fire alarms, despite the yacht being equipped with Autronica integrated fire-detection and alarm system, which included smoke and thermal detectors.

It was found that the smoke detectors, fire detection and alarm system had been inoperable for two months before the fire. Despite several attempts to fix the systems, they remained broken until the date of the fire.

If working, these alarms “would have alerted the crew of the fire’s location” and “provided an opportunity for a direct response”, the report said.
