Marine News from the Great Lakes

A technical look into mjm yachts’ advanced manufacturing & materials, today’s leader in fuel-efficient powerboats for good reason.

What Makes an MJM Different?

It all starts with the vision and the design. To improve sailboat performance with the wind as a finite source of energy, founder Bob Johnstone knew that stronger, stiffer, and lighter high-tech construction with a low vertical center of gravity (VCG) worked wonders.

Typically, powerboat builders didn’t care; they just built boats heavy and cheap, then kept adding more horsepower. This left the door wide open for the Johnstone family to create MJM Yachts as the first seriously built performance motoryacht with strong/light high-tech epoxy composite construction.

The net result was a faster, lighter motoryacht that delivered impressive fuel-efficiency. “Twice the Fun, Half the Fuel” became MJM’s initial mantra. As the technical editor of Soundings commented, “MJMs are built like the Boeing Dreamliner. They could last 100 years!”

What is Advance-Precision Vacuum Infusion?

First is the proprietary epoxy-based resin formulation. This provides better bond to the core surfaces that are mechanical as well as adhesive. Destructive testing has shown this to create 25% better mechanical properties versus a vacuum bagged wet layup.

Second is the use of proprietary unbalanced woven quad-axial E-glass, enabling the dialing in of exact engineering with the result of greater strength and a reduction in weight. An example is the deck, which is 35% less weight, helping to lower the VCG. The lower the VCG, the more stable, better performing the yacht. The special formulation epoxy resin and E-glass are brought together through the vacuum infusion process. This provides several important points of precision, the first being that the process eliminates the possibility of air voids, no matter how small.

Next is the ability to exactly control the E-glass to resin ratio, achieving the optimum 60:40. The last point being that the application of a vacuum compacts and bonds these elements into high-strength unitized parts.

What Factor does Advanced Engineering Play?

Building an ultra-performance yacht like an MJM takes a great deal of planning and engineering to predict stresses and loads placed upon all structures. In this area, computations for weight, vertical center of gravity, and hull geometry all interact to determine the materials to be used to deal with the forces needing to be dealt with. The combination of design, engineering, materials, and processes determine the outcome, and is why an MJM is so stable, fast, and fuel-efficient.

A key part of the design is MJM’s improved deep-V hull shape, which influences speed, stability, and handling. Other factors include buoyancy and bow shape, which on an MJM serves to eliminate a delayed response to the wheel, bow steer, or burying the bow in large following seas, not to mention helping to keep guests dry. A low center of gravity and narrow beam with chine flats redirect waves and wake energy outward and downward to dampen roll in a seaway. The deep-V entry hull shape slices through waves instead of slamming, pounding, or having each small wave create a mini collision and jolting the crew. This eliminates the fatigue experienced when driving other yachts.

Superior Materials

In real estate, it’s all about location, location, location; in performance yachts, you can say it’s all about materials, materials, materials. Each MJM yacht is constructed from superior materials selected specifically for weight, strength, stress loads, and function. Minimizing weight is essential in a performance yacht, but you can’t do that without increasing strength and stiffness.

For this reason, Master Builder Mark Lindsay—and his Boston BoatWorks (BBW)—was enlisted as MJM’s licensed building partner. Mark had over 30 years of high-tech boat building experience using advanced composite materials building America’s Cup, World Championship, and Olympic racing sailboats. Since Mark’s untimely passing, Phillip Steggall has taken the MJM composite lead to new levels of process, materials, strength, and weight savings. Phillip is a leading composites innovator with origins in the first high tech racing sailboats in the 1980s.

Epoxy, though far more expensive than traditional polyester and vinylester resins, is a much better adhesive that is 25% stronger and has greater flexural strength for longer life. Another advantage is the more tightly linked molecular structure that makes it almost impervious to osmotic blistering. In fact, the prescribed cure for boats suffering from bottom-blistering is the application of a new outer layer with epoxy resin.

The combination of the Corecell and E-glass in the outer skin creates a structure like a continuous I-beam that is stiff, strong, and light. The engineering dictates what density of coring should be placed in various areas of the hull and deck. Each panel is pre-cut and numbered for installation. Other builders use either the traditionally cheap method of laying sheets of cloth in the mold, spraying copious amounts of resin on it, then hand-rolling; or laying dry glass sheets in the hull, bagging it, then infusing a diluted resin by vacuum. However, the process on MJMs results in a stronger 60:40 glass-to-resin ratio, rather than the reverse. Resin is glue and should be minimized.

Advanced Composite Construction

These materials are then utilized in a revolutionary process in the hull and deck molds. The inside of the mold is coated with a premium epoxy-compatible gelcoat. Then the outer skin is an E-Glass cloth. Next comes the waterproof Corecell structural foam, and finally the inner skin of E-Glass. Once the laminate is built ‘dry’, a vacuum bag is applied to the laminate stack, which compresses the laminate with a force of approximately 2,000 pounds per square foot. This process ensures there are no air voids and ensures a unitized, lightweight, and strong structure. All air is vacuumed out beneath the bag so that the weight of atmosphere is compressing the layers of composites. The vacuum also pulls out all moisture.

Once the vacuum is complete, resin is vacuumed through the part. Vacuum ensures a minimal amount of resin, and thus weight. When you examine MJM’s laminates under a microscope, the resin wraps around each bead detail on the foam surface, providing a mechanical bond, in addition to the superior adhesive bond of epoxy. The MJM infusion process leads to 25% better mechanical properties of a laminate versus other wet layup processes.

There is no wood in the structure of an MJM. The hull grid with foam-cored stringers and bulkhead landings are then installed and encapsulated in a fiberglass laminate. MJM applies the infusion process to all of its moldings, not just the hull or deck.

The last step in the lamination process is to post-cure the molded parts for 24 hours. This process allows epoxy to cure at a better molecular level than polyester and vinylester resins, which on other boats continue to cure over the first year with the potential for serious print-through.

Each hull and deck are post-cured for 16 hours at 140°F. Epoxy-built MJMs are stronger, lighter, and longer-lasting. With hull and deck structures comprising up to 25% of a boat’s total weight, you can understand why MJMs are in most cases many thousands of pounds lighter than similar-sized boats. But it doesn’t end there. Greater hull and deck weight requires more horsepower to reach acceptable cruising speeds. This means larger, heavier engines to get the boat going. Larger engines burn more fuel. That means bigger fuel tanks for reasonable range. It’s a vicious cycle. MJM has taken an industry leadership role to end that cycle and become “The World Leader in Fuel-Efficient Powerboats.”

Owner benefits are huge: better response at the wheel and more fun to drive; more speed per horsepower applied and a chance to take advantage of weather windows; and a lower center of gravity for more comfortable motion at sea.

Soundings Technical Editor Eric Sorensen commented, “When it comes to the lifespan of today’s best-built boats…What’s to fail on an MJM? It’s an oven, post-cured epoxy boat. It’s as well-built as a Dreamliner, as far as I can see. There’s no reason that a boat like that couldn’t be here in 100 years.” Maybe 200 years, he later added.

Reviewed: MJM 53Z

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • Updated: September 10, 2020

MJM 53z

The MJM 53z is a Down East-inspired design, accented by stainless-steel bow rails that average around 30 inches high and mirror the form of the yacht’s fine entry. The rails sweep down the vessel’s razorlike profile and resolve amidships, where a cleverly placed handrail on the hardtop takes over the safety-in-transit department. A trunk cabin adds to the 53z’s ageless aesthetic, and it has function too, increasing headroom belowdecks.

Her classic look contrasts with the yacht’s modern engine package and high-tech build. Power for the 53z that I got aboard was quad 400 hp Mercury Verados. Quad 350s are standard, but either way, the power setup is a dramatic shift from the builder’s 50z, which has triple 435 hp Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels. The switch to outboards means the 53z needs considerably more fuel capacity: 910 gallons of gasoline compared with 534 gallons of diesel. To balance the 53z with the increased fuel, MJM switched from saddle fuel tanks to a centerline tank. The builder also placed the vessel’s 10-kW Westerbeke genset and standard Seakeeper 9 stabilizer aft to help maintain equilibrium. MJM’s founder, Bob Johnstone, says that naval architect Doug Zurn, who pens the MJM line, does a weight study for every build, ensuring that hulls are on an even keel.

I didn’t have a level with me, but taking in the yacht dockside in Newport, Rhode Island, she looked arrow-straight and well-proportioned. To that end, the 53z’s length-to-beam ratio is 3.5 to 1. Her length overall is 56 feet, 3 inches. Length on deck is 53 feet even, and her beam is 15 feet on the nose.

MJM 53z

As for handling, I grew up on a Down East boat, and if we saw 15 to 16 knots, we were flying, so I was curious to see what 1,600 ponies would do for the 53z. Shortly after passing under the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge, Johnstone put the throttles down. The 53z’s acceleration was impressively smooth in the calm conditions. Bow rise was nearly nonexistent, with the hull helped in part by the yacht’s Humphree Interceptors. They were set on auto and adjusted in real time as the yacht popped out of the hole and onto plane. Sightlines were unobstructed for nearly 360 degrees.

Her average top hop was right around 49 knots, but a couple of times, I saw the vessel clip 50 and even 51 knots. The 53z was loaded with about half fuel, 120 gallons of water and four people. This speed is about 10 knots faster than the 50z’s top-end speed. MJM’s initial sea trials saw an average wide-open speed of 48.6 knots.

MJM 53z

At the 53z’s maximum velocity, her four engines consume about 142.3 gallons per hour, resulting in a range of 272 nautical miles. Dial the speed back to a relatively leisurely 37 knots (around 5,000 rpm) and fuel burn drops to 114 gph, while range pops up to 297 nm. Bring the yacht down to 31.6 knots (around 4,500 rpm) and fuel burn falls off to 90 gph, while range increases to 320 nm. That’s 0.4 nm per gallon, which is a pretty consistent number for this yacht between 2,500 rpm to 4,500 rpm. At the 53z’s top speed, efficiency drops a hair to 0.3 nmpg.

Taking the 24-inch Edson Destroyer wheel, I throttled the 53z up to wide open. Her handling was fairly effortless. She responded instantly to wheel input. The yacht turned hard over without excessive inboard heel or bleeding off much speed. Although the sea conditions weren’t challenging, they provided insight into the fun side of this high-performing craft.

The 53z’s hull felt solid underfoot, thanks in part to her construction. The builder uses wet, prepreg epoxy resin that is post-cured (see: oven baked). Corecell foam in the hull and bulkheads adds rigidity without excessive weight. MJM uses higher-density foam in the hull bottom to better handle the rigors of running in the ocean at speed. For improved abrasion resistance, the builder employs Kevlar in the 53z’s outer skin.

This all adds up to the yacht coming in at a fighting weight of about 33,669 pounds at half-load. When you take a lightweight design and add horsepower, you get the performance I saw off the coast of Newport.

It’s easy to get lost in the 53z’s zip, but she also has the creature comforts that cruisers want and need. Belowdecks are two staterooms. There is a forepeak master with an en suite head and a step-up berth. An easy chair is abaft the berth and to port, if you want to sit back with a book or spend some quality time with the laptop. Johnstone suggested that I try out the chair. Admittedly, once I was in it, I didn’t want to leave it. The space is made warm with satin-finish cherry wood, and the average headroom is about 6 feet, 2 inches.

MJM 53z

Abaft to starboard is a guest stateroom, which can be set up with a double berth or twins. In the double configuration, the berth runs athwartships, and there is an easy chair here too. In the twin-berth setup, the berths run fore to aft, and the chair goes away. A 27-inch LG TV in this stateroom doubles as a computer monitor. There is a second head just forward of the guest stateroom that serves as the day-head.

Between the staterooms and the salon is the galley-down with a Wolf two-burner, ceramic induction cooktop, Breville microwave, 5.5-cubic-foot two-drawer Vitrifrigo fridge, Isotherm freezer and stainless-steel sink. And there is enough stowage for a cruising family to take off for a summer sojourn. If more space is needed, the stowage under the main-deck seating is wide and deep enough to fit my 5-foot-7-inch frame without trying.

It’s no simple task to take a yacht that has a stately look and blend that design with the modern-day ingredients of outboard power, as well as with technically intricate construction materials and methods. But MJM has managed to maintain the 53z’s Down East DNA in look and feel while providing a thrill ride of a driving experience and all the comforts of home.

MJM Yachts recently updated the belowdecks layouts for its 53-foot models, the 53z and 53zi. Whether an owner chooses outboard power (53z) or Volvo Penta IPS powerplants (53zi), there are now six accommodation plans available. To date, the builder says it has built all of them for owners.

We’re proud to have him on our team, and his background will help us continue to fulfill our motto, ‘Experience Counts!’”

“I’ve been fortunate enough to spend my career in and around the sailing and boating community, enabling me to love the various jobs I’ve held,” said Glynn. “In joining McMichael Yacht Brokers I’ve found another fresh, new outlet from which to apply my knowledge of and passion for yachting. Moreover, I’m able to do that while working in the company of some of the finest yacht brokers in the business. It is my hope to bring to my brokerage customers a sense of confidence and satisfaction as they make yacht transactions, both from the buyer’s and seller’s sides.”

Cameron Campbell Cameron has been boating his entire life, starting as a toddler on Great South Bay on Long Island. He grew up in Connecticut and spent every summer on Long Island Sound. In college he was a member of the University of Rhode Island Sailing Team and also ran operations at the URI Waterfront Center. After college he was an ASA Sailing Instructor at the New York Sailing School on City Island and then for Olympic Circle Sailing on San Francisco Bay. He participated in many regattas on both coasts in both small and large boats. He owned a Sabre for many years which he cruised from Annapolis to Maine. Cameron also has experience with power boats ranging from center consoles though larger cruisers.

Cameron has been working with clients preparing for Bermuda races, extensive blue water cruising, and many that are new to boating.

Rick Fleig Rick grew up on Long Island spending many years sailing on the Sound in everything from J/22′s to J/105′s, Custom C&C 41′s and many other boats, competing in all the major Northeast events. This experience and passion for sailing led him on a path to sail in the 1987 America’s Cup in Perth, Australia with both the Courageous and USA Syndicates. He has sailed in many major international regattas, including the Swan World Championships in Sardinia, the World 6 Meter Championships in Portofino, Italy, and several Newport Bermuda races.

Rick combines his extensive sailing background with both the marine and sports industry, having worked as a regional sales manager at SunfishLaser and Vanguard Sailboats, and prior to that as a regional sales representative with sporting goods giant Nike. He believes that building relationships and understanding the clients’ needs are essential in helping customers have a great experience with their boats. He works out of the McMichael Yacht Broker’s Newport office at the Newport Shipyard.

Rick resides in Portsmouth, RI, with his family, having fallen in love with the Newport area during his many sailing events there. He recently retired as the director/coach of the Portsmouth High School Sailing Team after many years, and along with his wife, Carline, now enjoys his time proudly following their youngest son, Tyler, who just finished his second year at the US Naval Academy. Tyler is a very accomplished sailor himself, and a member of the nationally ranked USNA dinghy sailing team. Rick is a member of Sail Newport and can be seen racing many weeknights and weekends in all the local events in a variety of boats.

Michael Beers Michael is a licensed captain and active racer who began his sailing career in Boston on the Charles River. As someone who did not grow up sailing, he especially enjoys introducing new boaters to the sport. Michael has a proven track record of working tirelessly for his clients, and enjoys working directly with buyers to identify the best possible “next boat” from the many options available. He is an active racer, recently racing in the J/70 fleet at Quantum Key West Race Week and aboard the J/130 Dragonly in the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race.

Prior to joining McMichael in 2007, he captained the 80′ schooner Adirondack II in Newport, RI and was an instructor at Offshore Sailing. In his free time, he enjoys cruising his Sabre.

Todd Williams Todd started sailing on his family’s cruising boat before his memory serves. His love of racing was cultivated through sailing Blue Jays and Lasers in Pequot Yacht Club’s junior program.  Since then he has actively raced in the J105 fleet, J109 fleet, and helped form the J122 class. He also developed and helped launch the LIS IRC 35 class.  Todd is an experienced distance sailor and was involved with winning the Vineyard race class and IRC overall aboard the J122 Partnership.

Todd enjoys using his extensive knowledge of boating to find his clients the boat that best suits their needs.  He is dedicated to providing the best possible service to all his customers.  Todd can often be found racing with clients and helping them build their racing programs. Through the years, he has custom built many J/Boats, Alerions, and MJM power boats for clients, many of whom he now considers personal friends.

During the winter season you may spot the Williams family on the slopes at Okemo where they have a ski house.

Andy Kaplan Starting October 4, Andrew (Andy) Kaplan has joined the brokerage team at McMichael Yacht Yards & Brokers. The addition increases the McMichael roster to seven full-time yacht brokers serving customers up and down the east coast with a concentration on the Long Island Sound and Narragansett Bay. He will work primarily out of the McMichael Mamaroneck, NY, office as well as Martha’s Vineyard.

“Andy is bringing to McMichael a lifetime of experience in sail and power boating with a keen focus in the sailboat racing world,” said McMichael President Steve Leicht. “His broad familiarity with offshore and one-design sailboats combined with his powerboating experience makes him an ideal addition to our brokerage team.”

Kaplan spent the majority of his career in finance including helping create the Quattro Global Capital, LLC where he was a principal and head of operation and marketing. “I believe that my financial sales and management experience is a great asset as I transition to yacht brokerage,” noted Kaplan. “While they are different industries, to succeed in either you need similar disciplines when matching buyers with the right product. That’s what creates and maintains long term customer relationships.”

Kaplan grew-up in Mamaroneck and has been a member of the Larchmont Yacht Club for over 30 years where he has been active in the Club’s leadership. He lives in New Rochelle, NY, and on Martha’s Vineyard, MA.

360 Boats. 28 Years. One Dream.

We build boats for passionate customers who share our belief in what make a true ocean-worthy yacht—performance, functionality, longevity, and uncompromising quality.

where are mjm yachts built

At Boston Boatworks, we listen to our customers’ personal vision of their perfect day on the water, and our team learns from their insight.

The intention to build the best extends to our entire ecosystem; the team of extraordinary craftspeople we work with every day, our current customers (and friends), industry partners, and all of the the boat owners whose vessels we have touched. Our success is measured through the value we create for every member of the greater Boston Boatworks family. This intention attracts people who share our values in what makes a premium offshore yacht, and who believe in the benefit of being part of something larger.

The design intention of the BB52 included all of these elements from the earliest stages. The resulting work, from Boston Boatworks and our partners Zurn Yacht Design and Winch Design, has created the beautiful BB52.

APPLICATION

At the foundation of Boston Boatworks is a unique process expertise—integrating composite engineering, high-strength construction, and artisan-level craftsmanship, with the efficiencies of a limited-production manufacturer.

The most advanced systems, equipment, and technologies gravitate to you when you are building at the highest level. Matching proven advancements in systems and technology with modern design, engineering, and construction materials creates customer benefits that were previously unattainable, and can represent access to the water for a greater number of people with varying capabilities, levels of experience, and cruising desires.

We apply our years of experience and expertise to every boat we build. But it is the application of ideas and feedback from those who own and use the boats we build that makes the real difference.

Supporting the enjoyment of time on the water aboard the boats we build is why we are fortunate enough to have so many repeat customers.

When an owner takes delivery of a Boston Boatworks-built boat, it is not the end of our relationship, but the beginning. This is the stage when our Customer Care Team takes the lead. For instance, New Owner Orientation, one of the services we offer, is a two-day affair that launches you with everything you need to know about piloting, operating, and maintaining your boat.

And once your boat leaves our dock, the support continues: Our Customer Care Team supports all of the boats we’ve built, in perpetuity. Factory-trained specialists are available to every owner, so you know you are not alone if an issue arises. We are also there for brush-up questions, help with a vendor, warranty coverage, service, repair, up-fit, refit, off-season storage, parts replacement, and local yard support.

Our Culture

We love what we do, and we love to share the boat-building process with enthusiasts who resonate with our values in what makes a best-built boat. The sharing of ideas is what has kept our boats best-in-class, and our customers coming back. Over the decades, these strong values have developed into strong professional partnerships and personal friendships. We highly value our relationships with our team, designers, vendors, industry partners, dealers, and, most importantly, our customers. Together we learn, innovate, problem solve, share knowledge and technology, create, and have fun! Our diverse skills and backgrounds, combined with a shared passion for building excellence, continues to strengthen our abilities and offerings and lead us in new directions. From new construction to service, our commitment to our customers is unwavering. We are proud and excited to introduce the Boston Boatworks 52 Offshore Express Cruiser: the result of our core values, our commitment to excellence; of all we’ve learned together over the decades, and all the amazing relationships we’ve built.

The Boston Boatworks Difference: Building with Intent

It's universally understood that every sailor venturing into the open sea seeks the assurance of safety above all else. However, the unpredictable nature of the ocean demands thorough preparation. This is why Boston Boatworks prioritizes constructing vessels that adhere to the most stringent safety protocols. So, what exactly does it mean to have an ISO Category A Ocean rating?

MJM Yachts Vermilion

A $2 million cruiser

VERMILION, Ohio -- This is what a $2 million boat looks like.

Built by Boston Boat Works, this MJM motor yacht is billed as "the most technologically advanced production 50-footer, ever." Its hull is built for the choppy waters of the Great Lakes and can withstand big waves. It also has plenty of luxury touches.

Here are the specifics.

Boat Name: MJM 50z

Dealer: MJM Yachts Vermilion

Model year:   2019

Cost: Starts at $1.995 million

How big:   55 feet, with a 15-foot beam, 32,850 pounds

How many people fit in it: 15 people can sit comfortably on the deck

The layout: The layout is ideal for entertaining and extensive cruising, with two staterooms and heads, with glass-enclosed shower. The cabin's L-shaped lounge serves as a pair of foot-to-foot single berths as is, or converts to a double berth by lowering the table.

The construction:  Built by Boston BoatWorks, the 50z has high-tech construction, fuel efficiency and high-end components that make it light, fast and durable. It's the first yacht to feature the Seakeeper Gyro Stabilizer, which eliminates most boat roll.

The safety: The CE Certification Cat A Ocean means that the design and construction of the hull is built to withstand 7-meter waves and 55 mph winds. "It's the peace of mind knowing that if you get stuck, you have a boat that's going to get you back to the dock," MJM Yachts Vermilion owner Mike Moes said.

The engine: Three pod drives total more than 1,300 horsepower and can push the boat to 40 knots.

The gas tank: The boat has a 520-gallon diesel tank that burns 50 gallons per hour at 35 knots.

Accolades: Named "Best Down East Cruiser 50 Feet Plus" by the editors of Power & Motor Yacht, Passagemaker, Soundings, Soundings Trade Only, Yachts International and SAIL.

4746mm-liberty Yacht | 29' Mjm 2007

Just Listed!

The MJM Yachts 29z is built without compromise and is the only boat in its class specifically designed to maximize fuel efficiency, with a leading edge, high-tech epoxy wet pre-preg Kevlar/E-glass/Corecell composite laminate, vacuum-bagged and oven-post-cured. It’s more costly, but of significantly higher quality. 29z is stronger and lighter than other boats built with conventional fiberglass or SCRIMP construction, primarily because epoxy has 3x the flexural strength of polyester or vinylester resins. Furthermore, 29z is certified by the International Standards Bureau in Brussels, Belgium as a CE Mark Category B Offshore Power Yacht.

6 ft. headroom in this 29 footer is a well received feature by owners. Generously flared bow sections, sea-going freeboard and large opening hull ports are the answer. Satin-finished cherry cabinets and drawers are framed and flush-mounted. The gloss-varnished teak & holly sole provide a true yacht interior feel. A V-berth filler is available to create a large double berth for overnighting couples. Behind the forward backrest is an area for a tall person’s feet or for daytime storage of either bedding or filler cushions for the V-berth filler. An air-conditioning duct is installed in the top of the hanging locker aft with controls on the near bulkhead. The Wet head functions as a shower by pulling the soft-spray faucet/cord out of the sink. A 2nd shower is located on the swim platform.

Capable of extending your boating season, this MJM 29z is a brilliant example of a three season yacht. Located at McMichael Yacht Yard in Mamaroneck, NY and maintained by McMichael Yacht Service. She is ready for the 2024 boating Season.

Denison Yachting is pleased to assist you in the purchase of this vessel. This boat is centrally listed by McMichael Yacht Brokers LTD..

The MJM 40z

An agile performer for a stable ride.

Based on light but exceptionally strong epoxy construction and narrow, effective hull design, the 40z can best the competition by as much as 50% improvement in nautical miles per gallon at higher cruising speeds.

MJM Yachts Built Like a Racer. For two decades, Boston BoatWorks cut its teeth building multimillion-dollar Grand Prix racing sailboats, where every ounce counted.
