How to Make a Cute Origami Sail Boat!

This is a very simple traditional origami model, the origami sailboat makes a sweet little decoration perfect as decor at a kids party because they stand up, make great table place cards or, folded flat, use as a card embellishment.

You could also attach a long thread and use as a garland, hanging display or baby mobile. There are so many possibilities with this easy to remember the origami model.

This project requires just one piece of square paper. It works best with origami paper that has a design or color that is different on each side.

You can use slightly thicker paper, such as the craft paper used in the tutorial, which has a blue-and-white side and is six inches.

If you're new to origami this is the perfect model to start with and would be great as an origami project for kids. You could also put these little boats in envelopes as a cute card.

Folding the Paper Square to Make a Triangle

Have your paper boat-side up. If you want your sails to be white, have the color-side facing up.

Now fold the paper diagonally. Bring the bottom corner of the paper up to the top and unfold. Next, fold the right corner over to the left and unfold.

Refolding the Paper to Make a Rectangle.

Turn the paper over to the other side, and rotate it as shown.

Fold the paper in half, right to left, and unfold.

Fold the paper from bottom to top, and unfold.

Creating the Sails

Making sure the paper is still white-side up, fold the top and bottom corners to the central crease.

Bring the left and right corners inward together to the top, and then collapse the model as shown.

Insert Paper Corners Into Each Other

Fold the left sail down to the bottom, and then fold it back up. Leave about a centimeter overlap behind as shown.

Tuck the overlap into the pocket of the boat by gently opening it.

Create the Bottom of the Sailboat

Turn the boat over, and fold the bottom corner up to the center. This will be the stand.

Turn the model back over to the other side, and you're finished.

If you want the boat to be flat, you could use a little bit of glue or double-sided tape to stick it down.

Remember that origami takes practice, so take your time and fold as precisely as possible, and you will get a better result.

If you're more advanced with origami, you could also unfold the whole thing and reverse squash fold the bottom stand so it would have an internal pocket. If you're interested in more origami boats, try the traditional one .

2. This is the back of the origami paper, the sails will be this colour.

3. Fold the bottom point up to the top point.

4. Unfold the previous step.

5. Fold the right point over to the left point.

6. Unfold the previous step.

7. Fold the right point over to the central point.

8. Fold the left point over to the central point.

Making an origami paper boat is a great activity that’s easy to finish and doesn’t require a lot of materials. The beauty of making a paper boat is that you only need one piece of printer paper to complete the task! By folding the paper with sharp creases and shaping it carefully, you can make a great-looking origami boat in minutes. We'll walk you through folding your own paper boat with our complete step-by-step instructions.

Creating the Initial Folds

• To strengthen the crease, run your finger down the fold 3-4 more times.
• You should now have 2 creases along both centers (x-axis and y-axis) of the page.
• Use the crease you made before to help line up the folds coming in from the corners.
• The 2 folds should line up with each other.

Tip : When you go to fold the second side, use the first fold as a reference point.

• The flaps closest to you should be folded in front of the back flaps, not over them. If you fold over the back flaps, you won’t be able to fold the back flaps themselves.

Making the Final Folds

• Crease the paper along its edges so that it stays in the square shape.
• The bottom of the diamond should be the part of the paper with extra folds.
• The bottom corners will line up to become the bottom point of a square diamond.
• You may need to pull up the triangle inside the diamond while pulling apart the two sides. Try to keep the triangle inside the diamond sticking straight up as this will be your boat's "mast."
• You can reinforce the corners with clear tape and tape around the bottom to keep your boat dry.

Tip : Waterproof your boat! Use a waxed paper from an art store to make your boat last longer, or color one side of the paper completely with a crayon. You can also try to make your boat out of aluminum foil.

• If you don't have specialty supplies like wax paper or crayons, no need to fret. You likely already have the tools to waterproof your delicate paper boat right at home. Simply construct two separate boats out of ordinary printer or construction paper. Then, gently place one inside the other, nesting them together into a double-walled vessel. This should reinforce them to better withstand water without getting too soggy. Though, test float gently, as the extra weight could cause sinking if the little boat gets overburdened.
• Missing wax paper for true waterproofing? Simply equip your artist's toolkit by raiding the crayon bin! Thoroughly color one whole side of the boat with thick crayon before setting it afloat in a pool, pond or puddle. The waxy buildup should act as a shield against light water exposure. Though if embarking on choppier seas, extra reinforcements may still be needed, matey!
• Forego the plain printer paper and opt for fun vibrant colors and patterns! Tissue paper can make for a festively hued sail, but be extra delicate as it shreds easily, especially once wet. For best durability, stick to construction paper or card stock to give your boat more sturdiness as you launch it into the open water.

If you want to make a paper boat, fold a piece of paper in half from top to bottom. Then, fold it again from side to side and unfold so you have a crease in the center. Fold the top right corner down towards the center. Next, flip the paper over and fold the other corner down on the other side. Not only does this origami boat look super cute, but it floats too! Why not have sailing races or see how much weight they can carry?

Step 1: Start with a rectangular piece of origami paper placed in portrait position. We’re using single sided paper which will result in a sail in a different colour to the hull.

Step 2: Fold the paper in half horizontally, bringing the top down to meet the bottom

Step 3: Fold the paper in half vertically, bringing the left side over to meet the right. Make sure you only crease the very top section of this fold!

Step 4: Unfold the paper

Step 5: Fold the two top coners down to meet in the centre

Step 6: Fold the top layer of paper upwards

Step 7: Turn the boat around

Step 8: Repeat step 6, folding the bottom layer of paper upwards

Step 9: Open up the inside of the boat

Step 10: As you widen the boat, ensure the ends fold underneath one another

How to Make a Paper Boat

Learning how to make a paper boat is SO FUN and really easy! With just five minutes and a sheet of regular printer paper , you can fold a cute little origami boat that actually floats on water.

This is such a classic craft project that’s quick and simple, and it’s a really fun introduction to origami ! Follow the step-by-step tutorial below, or watch the quick video to learn how to make a paper boat. You’ll be an expert in no time!

• 1 piece Letter sized printer paper (8-1/2 by 11 inches size; any colour)

Do paper boats float in water?

Yes! These boats will float in water. But since they’re made out of paper, they can really only go in the water once. The boats should last in water for at least 10 minutes before they get waterlogged. Once they’re soaked with water, it will be hard to keep them upright, and they might even sink.

If you want them to last longer in the water, add a layer of tape to the bottom of your boat to make it waterproof.

What kind of paper do you need to make a paper boat?

I find it easiest to use regular printer paper or construction paper , since most people have those at home already. Printer paper comes in all sorts of fun colours, or you can colour or draw on white paper to add colour to your boat.

You can also use origami paper if you have it. You just have to cut it to make sure the proportions are right, since most origami paper is square.

Want your boat to last longer in the water? Make a waterproof boat out of waxed paper or aluminum foil!

Can you put things in paper boats?

Sort of. If you’re planning to put your boats in water, whatever you put into the boats has to be really light, otherwise the boats will tip over. You could cut out paper people to put in your boats… or possibly teeny tiny toys. But I can’t promise that the boats will stay upright in the water with toys in them.

If you’re playing with the boats on the floor (and not in the water), you can load them up with all sorts of fun, small toys. Try Lego figures, small Hatchimals , or even Polly Pockets!

Where can I play with these paper boats?

You can play with paper boats in the bath, in the sink, or even outside in a puddle. Or you can keep them dry and play with them on the floor so they last longer. A blue towel or blanket makes a great ocean!

How can I customize my origami boat?

Use brightly coloured paper, and decorate them with markers, pencil crayons, and stickers. Don’t forget to give your boat a name when you’re done!

We hope you’ll have a great time learning how to make a paper boat, because these boats are SO FUN and they’re really simple to make! All you need is one piece of regular sized printer paper and in 5 minutes you can fold an awesome boat that actually floats in water!

This is such a fun kids craft and a great introduction to origami for kids. Such a fun activity for summer or any time!

When my kids got home from school, they saw all my paper boats on the office floor (because that’s where all my best crafting is done!), and they got so excited to make them! My 5 year old is a little too young to make the folds, so I just gave him one of my paper boats. But my 7 and 9 year olds folded theirs all by themselves and they looked awesome!

Then my 3 kids gathered all the sofa cushions and made a giant fort for their paper boats. Because why not make an ocean fort for your paper boats!? They loaded their boats with tiny little toys and I heard all sorts of playing with “LOOK THERE’S LAND OVER THERE!” the whole time I was making dinner.

How to Fold an Easy Origami Boat

These instructions will teach you how to fold a very easy origami boat. If you’re just starting out we do recommend you check out our  Beginner’s Guide  to learn all the basics first.

Step 1)  Fold and Unfold the paper in half diagonally both ways.

Step 2)  Fold the top of the paper down to the centre.

Step 3)  Fold the top layer of paper back up along the dotted line.

Step 4)  Fold the very tip of the paper down along the dotted line.

Step 5)  Fold the paper in half.

Step 6)  Fold the paper back along the dotted line on both sides. This is an Outside Reverse Fold.

Step 7)  Rotate the model so it’s facing the right direction.

Origami Boat instructions and tutorial

Almost all kids make paper boats, which is one of the most common topic in origami, along with the origami heart, paper hat, traditional origami boxes and flying paper planes. But nearly all origami boats are the same two traditional origami model: the simple origami boat that floats, and another traditional origami boat with two sails but without a mast. The easy 2 minute origami boat that I show how to make in this video is a new model that I created. It's very simple, but I looked all over the internet and could not find one like it, with its evocative color mast. I hope this new origami boat model will bring more diversity to the world of origami sailboats!

Note: this origami boat is not a floating origami boat, but you can make it stand by itself (which is great to take cool photos of your origami sailboat), or lay it flat if you prefer.

What I like the most about this new origami yatch model is that you can easily change the width and location of the mast and the size of the hull. So you can make many very different paper boats!

Material: to fold this origami boat, you need a square paper with 2 different colors.

In the video I use a 15x15 cm sheet of origami paper to make the origami boat, but you can use other sizes, including smaller sizes, as this origami sailboat does not have a lot of folds.

In the video I go very slowly to make sure everyone can see where to fold, so it takes a bit more than 2 minutes. But once you have folded your first origami boat, the next ones should take 2 minutes or less.
