Rolex Service Complete Guide and Costs

Rolex Service guarantee

How much does a Rolex service cost?

What do they do when they service a Rolex watch?

Rolex is probably the watchmaker that is known for making the most durable and lasting timepieces in the world. Rolex’s movements are known to be workhorses that just continue ticking year after year.

But Rolex watches consist of mechanical movements, and to ensure that they last a lifetime, it is important to look after them and give them the care they need.

To ensure your Rolex watch continues ticking year after year, you need to service it. Just like you need with any mechanical object that consists of hundreds of moving parts.

Let’s go into detail about Rolex service, how it works, and how much a service costs

How much does it cost to service a Rolex?

Some people are surprised about the fact that you need to service your Rolex watch occasionally. But like all mechanical objects, a Rolex watch needs to be looked after. Just like you need to service a car to ensure that it functions properly, and to extend its life length.

A Rolex watch is not cheap to buy, and it consists of countless very small parts. Servicing a Rolex requires a skilled watchmaker who knows exactly where each part should go, and how to handle its movement.

With that in mind, servicing a Rolex doesn’t come cheap. But the fact is that it is likely well worth the investment.

In Rolex’s own words:

”The cost will depend on the type of servicing required and the state of the watch. Before every service, the condition of your watch will be evaluated by Rolex-certified watchmakers and you will receive an estimate for your approval for the cost of the service procedure. Please contact your Official Rolex Retailer or Service Centre for more details.”

And the fact is that the cost of servicing a Rolex watch can vary greatly depending on its condition. Rolex’s goal with a service is not only to ensure that the movement is functioning perfectly but also to make the watch look new again.

This means replacing any damaged or aged parts. For vintage Rolex enthusiasts, this is absolutely frightening, but for the majority of people, they get a watch that looks just as new after the service. If necessary, the watchmaker will need to change parts, such as the dial, hands, bracelet, bezel insert, and so on. These are all things that add to your Rolex service bill.   At the same time, if your watch is in excellent condition, the watchmaker will just service the movement, get it oiled up and ready to work for many more years.

So if you have an old watch where a lot of visible parts and movement parts need to be changed, the bill can climb a lot.

The replacement of damaged and old parts is part of a standard service. However, you can also say that you don’t want to replace any parts, and they won’t.

rolex yacht master service cost

But it’s not just about how damaged your Rolex watch is that affects the cost. There are also other factors. Do note, however, that before the watchmaker services your Rolex, they will carefully inspect it to see what needs to be done with the watch. When they have identified what needs to be done with the watch, you will get an invoice that breaks down the cost of the service. This allows you to get a clear picture of what each and every single fix costs, including any new parts that may be necessary. In order for them to start with the service of your watch, you need to approve the invoice.

To answer the actual question, normal service is usually around 600-800 EUR. For more complicated movements, that span is around 700-1000 for a standard service. At the same time, if your watch needs new parts, and is in overall poor condition, these numbers will climb even more.

Rolex service center VS independent watchmaker -where to service your Rolex.

Note that there is a big difference between a Rolex service center and an independent watchmaker, and how they do things.

Rolex service centers have strict rules about how they should serve a Rolex, but a watchmaker does it as they please. In general, it is advised that you have your Rolex serviced by RSC because you get the expertise and know-how of the company that manufactured it. But if you find a good watchmaker, there are absolutely no issues.

You can find the Rolex service center nearest to you here.

Here are additional factors that affect how much a Rolex service costs:

The movement

This is the factor that affects the service costs the most based on standard pricing (with the exception of large damages). Different Rolex watches have different movements, and they are all differently complicated. Some movements are very straightforward with not a lot of parts. Others, on the other hand, such as the Daytona and Sky-Dweller are complicated movements consisting of tons of parts.

The more complex that the movement your watch has, the more expensive your service cost will be.

Rolex case material

Another factor that affects the service cost is the case material and the model. The more basic the model it is, the cheaper it will be to service.

Furthermore, if your watch is made in gold or platinum, and/or has precious stones, the service cost will increase. Servicing a gold watch, and handling stone-decorated watches requires more expertise and that the watchmaker is more gentle and delicate.

Will Rolex service a watch without papers?

Yes, Rolex will service a watch without papers.

What does a Rolex servicing consist of?

There are many steps of a Rolex service, and the steps, as mentioned, vary depending on your watch and how old and damaged it is. Rolex presents the service process as consisting of 10 steps. These are:

  • Disassembly
  • Cleaning the movement
  • Replacement of components
  • Lubrication and reassembly
  • Timing calibrations
  • Refinishing the case and bracelet
  • Reassembly of the case
  • Waterproof tests
  • Quality control
  • Two-year service guarantee

The first step of a Rolex service is completely dismantling the watch. Parts are then cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner . The watchmaker then inspects each part to see if any of them are damaged and need to be replaced.

The watchmaker then reassembles the movement and lubricates it. It is then tested for accuracy.

Unless you have said otherwise, a polishing is included in the service, where the case and metal bracelets are polished to get them back to their original luster and finish. Lastly, Rolex then tests the watch to ensure it performs like a new watch, with   proper power reserve, precision, and waterproofness.

How long does a Rolex service take?

How long a Rolex service takes depends on a number of factors.

Firstly, the service can be done by a Rolex service center (Rolex authorized retailer’s own workshop), or be sent to Rolex in Switzerland. The standard procedure is that the watch is serviced in the service center, but sometimes, the watch would need to be sent to Switzerland if the service center cannot fix the issue with your watch.

A complete overhaul takes a minimum of four to six weeks, depending on the condition of your watch. If it is sent to Switzerland, the shipping both ways will naturally take some additional time. Six weeks is often a common timeframe that we hear, so this is also what you should expect.

How Often To Service Your Rolex Watch

Today, Rolex recommends that you service your watch at least every 10 years, but the fact of the matter is that there is no fixed answer. There are plenty of examples of people who have worn their watches for 20 years and never serviced their watch as it runs perfectly.

But after such a long time, it can be a good idea to service your watch regardless if you find any issues with it or not because inevitably, the oils and lubricants will dry, causing more wear and tear to the movement’s parts as there will be more friction. Ultimately, this can cause the service to be more expensive long-term.

rolex yacht master service cost

Some people service their Rolex watches regularly, but others live after the principle that if it is not broken, it does not need fixing.

Just like it affects service intervals depending on how much you drive a car, the service interval depends on how and how much you use your Rolex watch.

If your watch is damaged or acting strange, it can be a sign that you may need to service your watch earlier than the 10-year interval. For old vintage watches, you may want to service your watch more frequently than every 10 years, but at the same time, it will depend on how the watch performs. If your watch performs flawlessly and keeps time perfectly, there may not be a need to service your watch.

Check your watch’s timekeeping, as this will reveal if the movement needs a service. A COSC certified Rolex should operate with a frequency of   -2/+2 accuracy per day. Some people allow less accuracy than that before they decide to serve it.

If your Rolex watch does not operate within COSC and it is less than five years old, and it still has the warranty , any issues (not caused by external factors) will be covered by the guarantee.

When you have serviced your watch by a Rolex service center, you will get a 2-year service guarantee.

I am not able to read the time due to the hand about the same color as the face. Also, it runs about 3 minutes behind for years even after many services over the years. Any problem w changing face so I can see the time better? Thanks Ann

' src=

You can change the dial on your Rolex watch, that is not a problem. Just visit a Rolex dealer and they will be able to show you the dials that you can choose from and order one for you if they don’t have it in stock. To make sure it runs properly, you can ask them to regulate the watch. But bear in mind that modern Rolex watches have a specified accuracy of +/- 2 seconds per day so that means about 1 minute per month or so.

Kind regards, Millenary Watches

I lost the original guarantee card but I have the receipt of purchase and the international service guarantee card provided at a Rolex Service Center in Switzerland after I took it for normal servicing. Is that enough evidence that it’s an original watch (in case I ever want to sell it). Thanks

Hi, It is possible to determine the authenticity of a Rolex watch without any type of certificates and documents however, a watch without the original certificate will be worth less than one with the original certificate, mainly due to the fact that it is not possible to replace the original certificate. the Service card can help with the value somewhat but most importantly, it shows that the watch has been maintained and is in good condition.

I have a guarantee service card from a Rolex Service Center in Switzerland after servíng. Is that enough to sell it as an original or do I need the original card ?

Hi, If you have an authentic Rolex, you can of course sell it as original regardless if it has papers or not. Having a service card does help with proving its authenticity and also that it has been maintained and is in good condition. However, the original certificate has particular importance amongst buyers and collectors due to the fact that they cannot be replaced and buyers in general prefer to have all the original accessories. The bottom line is that you can of course sell it but it will be roughly 10-15% percent lower than if you have the original card.

Rolex Service: Costs + How Often And Where To Service Your Rolex

By TSW Staff Updated February 14, 2024

Your Rolex watch will last you a lifetime if you take good care of it. That includes caring for it daily, making sure you use it as it’s initially intended. But that also means servicing your Rolex when the time comes. Here is everything you need to know about servicing your Rolex.

How much does it cost to service a Rolex? It costs around $800 to service a Rolex. A normal Rolex overhaul ranges from $600 to $1000 and will vary depending on your model, its condition and the type of service needed.

Many factors come into play when it comes to the maintenance cost of a Rolex. So you can’t be sure of the exact price until you leave your watch with your local AD (authorized dealer).

The Main Factors Influencing A Rolex Service Cost

Movement, model, case type and condition all have an impact on a Rolex maintenance cost.

Related : Rolex Explorer I vs. Explorer II

Before every service, you should be able to know exactly how much it will cost you. After leaving your watch to a Rolex-certified watchmaker, they will evaluate the condition of your watch.

Afterward, they should give an estimate based on what needs to be done to take care of your timepiece. The reason why the price varies is that they may have to replace so parts, which is not part of the minimum fee. You’ll have to approve the cost before the service procedure is initiated.

Some independent watchmakers have a Rolex service price list readily available, that will give you right away the exact amount that you will have to pay for regular service. Notice that you should go this round only if you know the watchmaker and have a good reason not to go through an authorized RSC (Rolex Service Center).

The best thing to do is to contact your Rolex authorized dealer or Service Center to know exactly what you can expect for your watch.

Also don’t forget that if your watch needs to be sent in Switzerland (because your local Rolex Service Center cannot take care of it, for whatever reason), you’ll have to factor in shipping costs too.

Whereas some Rolexes have simple movements some have a lot more complex ones. Obviously, the more complex the movement, the higher the service price.

Rolex watches with the simplest movements include:

  • The Oyster Perpetual
  • The Explorer
  • The Submariner
  • The Air-King
  • The Milgauss
  • The Cellini Time

These are all three-handers: movements that take care only of the hour, minute and seconds hands.

Rolex watches with regular movements include:

  • The Submariner Date
  • The Sea-Dweller
  • The Datejust
  • The Cellini Date

Rolex watches with more complicated movements include:

  • The GMT-Master II
  • The Explorer II
  • The Day-Date
  • The Cellini Dual Time

The most complicated Rolex movements are found in:

  • The Cosmograph Daytona
  • The Cellini Moonphase
  • The Sky-Dweller
  • The Yacht-Master II

Model And Case Material

The model and case of the watch also can play a role in the servicing cost of your Rolex.

Even if they share the same kind of movement, a Submariner or an Air-King are likely to be more expensive to service than an Oyster Perpetual. In general, professional Rolex watches are more expensive to service than simpler classic watches.

Also, Rolex watches with cases made from precious metals will also be more expensive to service. Rolesor, Everose, and white gold cases will increase the price of maintenance, as the watchmakers will have to take even better care of your precious timepiece.

Don’t worry though: your Oystersteel watch will not come back to you scratched. Unless it was already, and you didn’t ask for a polish. Which leads us to the next point.

A relatively new Rolex watch (between 7 and 10 years old) will have a much better running movement than a vintage piece.

Also, even if professional Rolex watches are designed to take a beating and still keep running, the movement will age quicker than if it was sitting stopped in a safe.

As such, a watch that was worn extensively as a daily wearer (with the occasional bumps and exposure to water) can have higher servicing costs due to more work having to be done to the movement.

Your Rolex case will polished be too. Bear in mind that if you expect to sell your Rolex down the line, it might be a good idea not to polish your watch.

In fact, many watch enthusiasts prefer to see the real condition of the watch, with its scuffs, scratches, and marks. A polished case can always hide something suspicious. Remember to ask for the service center NOT to polish your watch as it is part of the official Rolex service procedure.

Also, if you have a vintage piece that needs a part to be replaced or recreated from scratch , this will also impact the overall amount as well. As usual, the final cost will depend on your specific watch and situation.

How Often Should You Service Your Rolex

Rolex recommends that your service your watch approximately every 10 years. Models that are 7 years old or less don’t need servicing unless they are damaged. For vintage models, it will mainly depend on how the movement performs.

The recommended service every 10 years that Rolex recommends is a minimum. If you like, you can send your watch more often Some watch enthusiasts like to have their watch serviced every 5 years.

Whereas shortening the servicing cycle is totally feasible, it is not specifically advised to do so. In fact, unless your watch is damaged or is running very poorly, you shouldn’t have to service it that often. You can safely stick to the recommended 10 years interval.

  • If your Rolex is new , you’re good to go. Just make sure that your watch is in good condition. Also, it should operate within Rolex’s accuracy standards of -2/+2 sec/day. If it’s not the case (probably because you’ve worn your watch extensively), you might send it for service as soon as possible.
  • If your Rolex is 7 years old (for older models) to 10 years old , you should consider to send it for a maintenance check, regardless of if it runs as expected or not.
  • If you have a vintage Rolex (30 years or more) , you should ask your local watchmaker or an authorized dealer. Unless you are the first owner and that you sent your watch for service at the recommended interval, the consensus is that you shouldn’t service a vintage timepiece that is running fine. The goal is to not damage anything, as you don’t know exactly what the watch went through. As soon as it begins to perform poorly (or stop without reason), then it’s time to send it for a service.

What Does A Rolex Service Consist Of

When you send your Rolex for a service, it goes through an extensive procedure intended to keep it running as if you just bought it. During the service procedure, a certified Rolex watchmaker will:

  • detach the bracelet from the case. Then, open the case, remove the movement and completely disassemble the watch case
  • completely disassemble the movement, taking each and every part and component apart. Then, ultrasonically clean each part in a batch with solutions created specifically for the task.
  • inspect each part to identify those they need to replace. They will only use genuine Rolex replacement parts.
  • completely reassemble the movement, using special lubricants created to keep the movement lubricated and prevent wear.
  • readjust the precision of the watch, making sure it’s within Rolex’s accuracy standards of -2/+2 sec/day. Then they will keep the watch for a few days to make sure it’s performing as intended.
  • refinish the bracelet and case, to restore its original shine. They will replace any damaged part and then polish the watch. If you don’t want your watch to be refinished, don’t forget to tell your service center!
  • reassemble the case and place the movement in it
  • test the waterproofness of the watch using a vacuum test, a compression test, and a condensation test. At this point, the watch will be completely sealed (up to the rated maximum water resistance)
  • make a final quality control, making sure your Rolex watch performs and looks like it should: perfect.

When you send your Rolex watch for a service, you a get 2 years or service guarantee. Should the movement not operate correctly that period, it will be taken care of – unless you didn’t use the watch properly or damaged it.

Where to Service Your Rolex

The easiest way to have your Rolex serviced or to get information about servicing is to contact an RSC or Rolex Service Center. Find the RSC nearest to you .

Related Questions

Does a Rolex need to be serviced? Yes, it does. Rolex watches run thanks to complex mechanical movements that slightly deteriorate and deregulate the more you wear the watch. You need to service your Rolex in order to keep it functioning properly and within Rolex’s accuracy standards.

What is the Rolex service turnaround time? The turnaround time for a Rolex service is between 4 and 6 weeks. The vast majority of Rolex owners report that an US-based RSC will take around 6 weeks to service the watch. Some can go as quick as 3 weeks, but it’s not the norm.

Do Rolex watches stop running? Yes, Rolex watches stop if you don’t wear them enough. All current Rolex watches feature movements that need to be kept wound in order to run. As soon as the mainspring runs out of power (because it’s fully unwound), a Rolex watch will stop.

How Often Should You Service Your Rolex? 3 Different Scenarios

Rolex Servicing

Every once in a while, all luxury timepieces need servicing to ensure their accuracy, precision, and overall performance.

And regular servicing is our obligation as Rolex owners.

While the official Rolex team’s recommended interval for watch servicing is 10 years, this may vary depending on different conditions, including the age of your luxury watch.

  • If your Rolex is new , chances are, there is no need for servicing a Rolex watch yet. All you need to do is to ensure that your timepiece is in its pristine condition. But if it’s worn daily and continuously exposed to a not-so-friendly environment, you might consider visiting a Rolex service center if necessary.
  • If your Rolex is between 7 to 10 years old , paying a visit to a local Rolex service center for a maintenance check might be beneficial, regardless of whether it’s functioning as expected or not.
  • If you have a vintage Rolex (30 years or more) , it is much better to ask your local watchmaker or some of the nearest authorized service centers to know when is the appropriate time to service your watch. Related: Discover Watch Accessories For Collectors The rule of thumb here is you shouldn’t service a vintage Rolex that’s working fine unless certain components or parts of your timepiece are disabled or do not work anymore.

Rolex Service Cost: Main Factors

Rolex Servicing

The model, type of movement, watch case, and watch condition are all crucial factors in determining Rolex service costs.

Usually, before every service, your trusted independent watchmaker or official Rolex service personnel will tell you the repair estimates or exact price you need to pay after they evaluate the condition of your Rolex watch.

In general, a complete service costs around $600 to $1,000.

But this may also change if you choose to bring your Rolex timepiece to independent watchmakers or a local AD (Authorized Dealer).

Rolex Servicing

The condition of the watch is the first thing watchmaker looks at upon checking your Rolex piece.

As a general rule, if your watch is relatively new (7 to 10 years old), it is safe to say that its movement runs better than vintage Rolex.

However, if your watch is extensively worn, receives occasional bumps, or is occasionally submerged in water, the service cost might be a lot higher due to the work that must be done and the new Rolex parts needed to recalibrate the watch’s movement.

Besides the inner workings, the case of your watch will also be polished, which can add to the service price, but this is optional.

Moreover, the overall cost will also be affected if you have a vintage piece that requires new replacement parts that are needed to be recreated from scratch.

Related: Is Your Rolex Waterproof Or Water Resistant

Model And Case Material

Rolex Servicing

The model and case material of the watch can also affect the service cost.

Even if your watches have the same movement and are made from genuine Rolex parts, some Rolex models can cost you more than others, and this is because professional Rolex watches need more work in servicing compared to simpler classic timepieces.

For example, Rolex Submariner Date and Rolex Air-King are more expensive than Oyster Perpetual.

Moreover, you must also know that the service price for watches made from precious metals like gold or platinum is higher than models made from stainless steel.

Rolex Servicing

As we all know, not all Rolexes have the same movement.

Some have simple watch movements, while others have more complicated watch calibers, thus making the service price of these watches different.

And naturally, as the movement becomes more complex, the service cost becomes higher too.

Rolex watches with simple movements include:

  • Cellini Time
  • Oyster Perpetual

These watches have a simple three-hand design, indicating only the hours, minutes, and seconds. They are also considered some of the most affordable Rolex watches .

Rolex watches with moderately complex movements include:

  • Cellini Date
  • Submariner Date
  • Sea-Dweller

Besides their practical function of telling time, these watches have other features, such as telling the date of the day.

Rolex watches with more complicated movements include:

  • Cellini Dual Time
  • GMT-Master II
  • Explorer II

Watches with these movements have two more functions besides practical timekeeping, such as telling the day of the week, another time zone display, and others.

The most complicated Rolex movements are found in:

  • Cellini Moonphase
  • Cosmograph Daytona
  • Sky-Dweller
  • Yacht-Master II

These four Rolex lines are the most complicated watches made by the brand.

In fact, the most complex Rolex timepiece is the Sky-Dweller, which features a dual time zone, an instantaneous annual calendar, and more.

The Servicing Process: What Does A Rolex Service Include

Rolex Servicing

Now that we have a general idea of how often we should visit the service centre and how much does it cost to fix or do a full service, it is now the time to answer the question, what does a Rolex servicing consist of?

Assessment Of The Watch

First is the assessment of the watch.

Expert watchmakers carefully examine the Rolex piece before they make repair estimates. After the assessment is done and approved, the watch servicing begins.

Preparation For Servicing

In this stage, the bracelet is detached from the watch’s lugs to access the case and extract the movement.

The movement, case, and bracelet will follow different paths during servicing before the watchmaker reassembles them again at the end of the process.

Dismantling Of Movements

After the movement is completely dismantled, all its components are meticulously examined and tested.

Any parts that no longer meet Rolex’s standard requirements are replaced to ensure the accuracy and precision of the movement.

This process may take time. And the specific model of the Rolex watch can affect the duration of this stage.

Cleaning Components

At this stage, all of the parts of the Rolex watch are sanitized through an ultrasonic bath to ensure its cleanliness and remove all traces of impurities.

Cleaning of watch parts includes the case, sapphire crystal, hands, or even the smallest part of the movement.

Assembly And Lubrication

Once the parts of the Rolex watch are cleaned and dried, the watch movement is reassembled and lubricated using a special oil.

This particular stage is also where the watchmaker performs initial adjustments to improve the accuracy of the caliber.

  • Refinishing case and bracelet: The case, bezel, caseback, and bracelet are re-polished or refinished to achieve the aesthetic specifications of the original design of the Rolex watch. These intricate procedures require exceptional care and skills to make the job done.
  • Case assembly: After refinishing the case, its parts are reassembled, and new seals are placed. After this, it will undergo waterproof testing.
  • Casing of the movement: After the hands and dial are refitted with the movement, all of them are put back into the case once the watchmaker performs strict technical and aesthetic inspections of all these components.
  • Precision test: Once the movement is enclosed within the case, the watchmaker re-evaluates its chronometric precision and power reserve, making any final adjustments needed to ensure it aligns with Rolex’s standard.

Waterproofness Test

After ensuring the watch’s precision through specific tests, the next stage is where your timepiece is pressure-tested in a water tank to check its waterproofness.

Rolex Yacht-Master Ultimate Buying Guide

rolex yachtmaster buying guide

As Rolex’s most diverse sports watch collection, the Yacht-Master is not only available in a wide assortment of case metals and sizes but it has also been paired with various bracelet styles and bezel materials. In less than three decades, the Rolex Yacht-Master collection has been home to dozens of references – some of which have been discontinued – and the nautical-inspired sports watch continues to be a mainstay of the Rolex lineup. There are two distinct models that share almost identical names: the Yacht Master and the Yacht Master II.

While the original Rolex Yacht-Master is an ultra-luxurious take on Rolex’s already popular sports watches, the Rolex Yacht-Master II was purpose-built to time out regattas in competitive sailing. Essentially, the Yacht-Master is the kind of watch you wear while lounging on a boat and a Yacht Master II is what you wear if you’re racing one. Nonetheless, both Rolex watches are incredibly popular, sought-after for their sleek designs and impeccable quality.

With that in mind, if you’re in the market for a Rolex Yacht Master, there are some important things you should know about the model (such as its history, pricing, and features) before you make a decision. Here, we’ve compiled everything you need to know about buying Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II watches to make the most informed purchase possible. Ready to get started?

Even though the Yachtmaster collection is one of the newest additions to the Rolex lineup, there has been a great amount of innovation over the years. History of the Rolex Yacht-Master

While we wouldn’t be introduced to the very first Yacht-Master until 1992, Rolex’s history with sailing actually dates back to 1958, the year the Swiss watchmaker partnered with the prestigious New York Yacht Club. By then, Rolex had already garnered a reputation for making great waterproof watches with the invention of their Rolex Oyster case back in 1926. So, the partnership was actually quite a natural next step.

Rolex solidified its relationship with the world of sailing in 1966 when Francis Chichester — one of history’s most exceptional navigators — became the first person to sail around the globe on his yacht, the Gipsy Moth IV, with a Rolex on his wrist. His voyage, which spanned from August 1966 to May 1967, took him 29,600 miles around the world. however, the most impressive part is that he only had a few tools to help him navigate his way, including nautical charts, a sextant, and a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The Rolex wristwatch chronometer he used was a reliable and steady partner, helping him keep time amidst rough conditions for 226 days at sea.

Despite the brand’s massive success in creating watches that were great for sailing, Rolex continued to hold back its efforts to create a watch specifically for this category. The brand did briefly dabble with the idea in the 1960’s, releasing a prototype dial for the Cosmograph chronograph with the name “Yacht Master” on it, but the idea never took hold. Today, only two known examples of this prototype Daytona Yacht-Master are known to exist — one belonging to Eric Clapton (whose model sold for $125,100 at auction in 2003) and one owned by legendary Rolex collector John Goldberger.

In 1992, we were finally introduced to the modern Yacht Master we know and love today. Its official name, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master, was the brand’s first ultra-luxury sports watch built for the open seas. To make sure that collectors understood the luxury aspect of this new watch, the very first 40mm model was forged entirely out of solid 18k yellow gold and featured a matching gold bi-directional rotating bezel (marked to 60 minutes for timing) alongside a gold Oyster bracelet. Over the next few decades, Rolex has expanded the collection using a variety of materials as well as adding new sizes to the luxury nautical watch collection.

15 years after the first release of the Yachtmaster, Rolex introduced the regatta chronograph Yacht-Master II specifically made for sportsmen to use while regatta racing. To cater specifically to these athletes, Rolex outfitted the watch with important features like a programmable countdown timer (to measure with reliability how much time until the start of the race) and both flyback and fly-forward functionality (for easy synchronization should the race committee have to restart the race sequence). Another key difference is that the Rolex Yacht-Master II is only available in one size, 44mm with an Oyster case and bracelet. However, there are a variety of alloys available.

How Much is a Rolex Yacht-Master?

Because there is such a wide variety of sizes and materials used across the Rolex Yacht-Master collection, the prices tend to vary significantly. For example, you can pick up some of the older or smaller Rolex Yacht-Master models for around $5,000 on the second-hand market. However, newer, larger Yacht-Master models, especially those forged out of precious metals, can sell for well into five-figures.

How much is a Yacht Master II?

Due to its large size, complicated movement, and frequent use of precious metals, the Yacht-Master II is one of the higher-priced Rolex watches you can purchase. In terms of pre-owned prices, a stainless steel reference of the Yacht-Master II starts around $15,000. This may seem steep, considering that this Yacht-Master II is stainless steel and doesn’t feature any diamonds or gems. However, the complexity of the movement is what really makes this watch shine and it is the primary factor behind its high price tag. On the higher end, the yellow gold ref. 116688 costs $43,550 retail and can be bought for around $28,000 on the pre-owned market.

Buying Pre-Owned vs New Yacht-Master Watches

The key difference between buying a pre-owned Rolex Yacht-Master or Yacht-Master II versus a new one is the price. For a retail Rolex model , you will surely pay a premium – especially if you choose one of the precious metal models. On the secondary market, you can get a Yacht-Master for a much lower price, and many collectors find this option a better value for their investment. However, this is still totally dependent on the specifics about the watch which you can get an idea of in the chart above. The price of a pre-owned Yacht-Master will always vary depending on factors like its alloy, the year it was produced, condition, and whether it is a luxury-oriented Yacht-Master or a sporty and purpose-built Yacht-Master II.

Often, many collectors turn to the second-hand market to purchase a Rolex Yacht-Master. Of course, the price is a big factor, but due to the durability and overall build quality, a used Rolex Yacht-Master represents a highly competitive offering. Because these watches are purpose-built to withstand weather and water, they tend to age well even if they have been heavily worn, loved, and used. Another reason that collectors turn to the second-hand market is to get their hands on early models. Since the Yacht-Master has only been around for about 30 years, it is still quite easy to track down some of the early references. This is a great opportunity for collectors who not only love the Yacht-Master as a watch but who also want to make a smart investment for their collection that has great potential to increase in value.

Rolex Yacht-Master References

While the Yacht-Master is one of the newest Rolex models, only first introduced in 1992, the watch has been given a wide variety of upgrades in sizing, alloys, and bezels over the years. Here, this comprehensive list outlines all of the standard-production Yacht-Master references since its initial introduction. This list is also incredibly important as a reference if you are purchasing a Rolex Yacht-Master on the secondary market, as it will serve as a great quick reference for what models have been produced over the years.

Everything You Need To Know About The Rolex Yacht-Master Features & Options

Since the first all-gold Yacht-Master was released in 1992, Rolex has expanded the line with a variety of aesthetic details and mechanical upgrades. Here, we’ll explore the different options available on both the retail and secondary market for the Rolex Yacht-Master collection.

Rolex Yacht-Master materials

Today, Rolex no longer makes yellow gold versions of their standard Yacht-Master model, replacing it with Everose (their proprietary rose gold alloy) and 18k white gold. However, the 42mm version is the only white gold version (which was only just introduced at Baselworld 2019) is the only white gold model, as well as the only 42mm model in the collection. – Yellow Gold (discontinued) – Yellow Rolesor two-tone  (discontinued) – Everose Gold – Everose Rolesor two-tone – White Gold – Rolesium (Oystersteel and platinum)

Rolex Yacht-Master sizes

Rolex has produced this luxury sports watch in a few different sizes to ensure that everyone has a Yacht-Master that fits their wrist perfectly. However, the smaller sized Yacht-Master models, known as the Lady Yacht-Master watches, have been discontinued in favor of the newer 37mm models. Today, women are reaching for more unisex sizes and designs, which could be what lead to the decision by Rolex. But that doesn’t mean women collectors are strapped for choice — as the current retail models are incredibly luxe and sophisticated for enthusiasts of both sexes. Furthermore, the secondary market is a great place to still get your hands on the smaller sized Midsize and Lady Yacht-Master models, and going pre-owned also opens up the doors to now-discontinued models like the solid yellow gold Yacht-Master watches. – 29mm (discontinued) – 35mm (discontinued) – 37mm – 40mm – 42mm

Rolex Yacht-Master bezel

With the Rolex Yacht-Master, the materials and aesthetics of the bezel depend on the material used for the case. With the Yacht-Master, there are bezels that consist of solid 950 platinum or 18k gold with raised, polished numerals. There are also bezels that are matte black Cerachrom ceramic with raised numerals, which are typically only fitted to the various solid 18k gold Yacht Master references. One of the less common and more flashy Yacht-Master bezels is nicknamed the “gummy bear” and it features rainbow-colored sapphires set around the bezel.

Rolex Yacht-Master dial

The dial of the Yacht-Master is quite archetypal of other Rolex sports watches. To ensure the watch is easily readable, the dial layout of the Yacht-Master features Mercedes-style hands, lume-filled hour markers, and a date window over at 3 o’clock. The dial itself is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that has a Cyclops magnification lens for easier reading of the date. When it comes to the dial color of the Yacht-Master, there are several colors and materials that have been used over the years, like the beautiful blue dial on the ref. 116622 or the luxe sandblasted platinum dial that can be found on the now-discontinued version of this reference.

Rolex Yacht-Master bracelet

The Rolex Yacht-Master only ever features either an Oyster bracelet or an Oysterflex bracelet. The iconic, three-link bracelet Oyster bracelet is a Rolex staple, and it is featured across nearly the brand’s entire collection — from the Datejust to the Daytona to the Yacht-Master. In 2015, Rolex also introduced the now-famous Oysterflex bracelet on the then-new Everose gold Yacht-Master. This rubber bracelet is far more impressive than it appears at first glance. The rubber strap is actually reinforced by an internal flexible metal blade, making it incredibly durable and sporty, while still having this elevated aesthetic that matches the overall luxury feeling of this timepiece.

Rolex Yacht-Master movement

Depending on the size of the Yacht-Master watch, it will have a different movement to fit the case. Additionally, in 2019, Rolex updated the 40 version of the watch to feature the new-generation Cal. 3235 movement. Below are the sizes Rolex has used in its various Yacht-Master watches over the years.

– 29mm : Caliber 2135; Caliber 2235 – 35mm : Caliber 2135; Caliber 2235 – 37mm : Caliber 2236 – 40mm : Caliber 3135; Caliber 3235 – 42mm : Caliber 3235

Everything You Need To Know About The Rolex Yacht-Master II Features & Options

Below, we’ll outline the different options available on both the retail and pre-owned market for the Rolex Yacht-Master II collection.

Rolex Yacht-Master II materials

In keeping with the inherently luxurious feel of the Yacht-Master line, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is outfitted in some of the world’s finest alloys. Many collectors love this watch for its combination of precious metals and durable stainless steel — what Rolex calls Rolesor. On the Yacht-Master II, there is the Everose Rolesor which is beloved for the warm pink hue of its 18k Everose gold components. Another great combination is the white gold and platinum Yacht-Master II; however, this is obviously a much more opulent choice at represents the top-of-the-line offering in the Yacht-Master II lineup. Of course, there is also a stainless steel option with a blue ceramic bezel for those who just want sheer practicality and durability. Unlike the standard Yacht-Master, you can get this larger, more complicated timepiece outfitted in solid yellow 18k gold if you really want to go all out. – Yellow Gold – Everose Rolesor two-tone – White Gold and platinum – Oystersteel

Rolex Yacht-Master II sizes

There are a lot of features that separate the Rolex Yacht-Master II from the standard Yacht-Master, and the 44mm size is immediately one of the most noticeable. While the Yacht-Master II case is just 2mm larger than the largest Yacht-Master, this extra-large sizing helps this watch house a more complicated dial and movement.

– 44mm

Rolex Yacht-Master II bezel

Another one of the big differentiators with the Yacht-Master II is that large, beautiful bezel. The bidirectional rotatable ‘Ring Command bezel’ on the Yacht-Master II is specifically designed to help the wearer time out a regatta. Unlike most bezels that operate independently from the internal movement, the ‘Ring Command’ bezel on the Yacht-Master II actually works with the watch’s state-of-the-art movement. Rotating the bezel unlocks access to the programmable countdown timer, enabling quick and easy setting for use during competitions. While the design is incredibly complex, the aesthetics are beautifully simple.

When it comes to the look of the bezel itself, the Yacht-Master II does differ from the standard Yacht-Master. While a two-texture timing bezel defines the original model, the real star of the Rolex Yacht-Master II is that bright, beautiful blue Cerachrom bezel. This blue ceramic bezel is featured on the stainless steel, yellow gold and two-tone Everose Rolesor Yacht-Master II watches; however, the white gold models receive their bezels in sandblasted platinum.

Rolex Yacht-Master II dial

The Rolex Yacht-Master II dial layout is stunning, sophisticated, and totally different than any of the other Rolex dials due to its niche complication. On the dial, you will find a variety of features including the countdown display (which can be programmed anywhere from 1 to 10 minutes) that you can read via the red arrow-tipped hand. You will also notice the central flyback/fly-forward chronograph hand, the center hour and minute hands, and the running seconds sub-dial.

The dial of the Rolex Yacht-Master II is also outfitted with 12 lume-filled hour makers for added readability. Today, the most modern references are outfitted with Rolex’s Chromalight display, which is a luminescent material that emits a blue long-lasting glow.

You will also notice a big difference between the dial of the new generation of Yacht-Master II watches and the first generation, which featured baton-style hands that pointed to square hour markers. It was only in 2017 that Rolex decided to marry the style of the Yacht-Master II with the brand’s famous Mercedes-style hands. Rolex also updated the hour markers to feature a triangular hour marker at 12 and a rectangular hour marker at 6, rather than just square-shaped markers all the way around.

Rolex Yacht-Master II bracelet

Unlike the Yacht-Master which has two bracelets, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is only available with an Oyster bracelet. The sporty, durable 3-piece link bracelet is a staple for the brand’s sports watches, which makes it a perfect choice for this professional regatta watch. Rolex has also outfitted this Oyster bracelet with an Oysterlock folding clasp, built specifically to prevent the wearer from losing the watch due to accidental opening. This is a great feature for this model, which is purpose-built to be used during tough racing conditions.

Rolex Yacht-Master II movement

It’s clear that the Rolex Yacht-Master II is an incredible looking timepiece. But, the most impressive part of this watch is by far its movement. When the watch was first released, the Yacht-Master II was outfitted with the brand’s Caliber 4160, with Caliber 4161 making its debut a few years later in 2013.

Rolex Yacht-Master Ultimate Buying Guide Rolesor Blue Dial

The Rolex Yacht-Master II features one of the brand’s most complicated in-house movements to date — the self-winding mechanical chronograph, caliber 4160/4161. This movement boasts high-tech features like a countdown timer with both flyback and fly-forward functionality and a mechanical memory with on-the-fly chronograph synchronization, making it incredibly sophisticated. Additionally, the bezel (aka the Ring Command Bezel) is actually connected to the mechanism itself, allowing the wearer to adjust and set the countdown feature quickly and easily on the go. Rolex says it took its engineers some 35,000 hours of development to create this mechanism — and we think it was well worth it. – Ref. 116689 : Caliber 4160; Caliber 4161 – Ref. 116688 : Caliber 4160; Caliber 4161 – Ref. 116681 : Caliber 4160; Caliber 4161 – Ref. 116680 : Caliber 4161

Celebrities Who Wear the Rolex Yacht-Master

It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that one of Rolex’s most bold and luxurious watches is popular among the world’s most famous celebrities. One of the most well-known A-listers to sport the Yacht-Master is Mark Wahlberg, who is already a really big Rolex fan. We’ve seen him out and about in a solid 18k yellow gold Rolex Yacht-Master II, which totally pops against that blue ceramic bezel. Mark has no trouble making a statement with his watches, and that’s clear with this stunning timepiece.

Tennis champion Roger Federer also famously sports the top-of-the-line 18k white gold and platinum Yacht-Master II, while comedian and host Ellen DeGeneres is often spotted wearing her the 18k Everose gold Yacht-Master 40 with a black Cerachrom bezel and a black Oysterflex bracelet. Other celebrities that have been seen wearing the Yacht-Master include the following list of names, although there are many other stars who proudly have a Rolex Yacht-Master in their collections. – Russell Crowe – Lydia Ko – Sir Robin Knox-Johnston – Mark Wahlberg – Bruce Willis – Connor McGregor – Emeril Lagasse – David Beckham – Guy Fieri – Steven Gerrard – A$AP Rocky – Billy Joe Saunders – Flo Rida – Drake – Manny Pacquiao – Ellen DeGeneres – Ed Sheeran

How to Style The Rolex Yacht-Master

The Yacht-Master was an instant classic when it was introduced by Rolex, which means that it is incredibly easy to work it into your wardrobe. What we love so much about this watch collection — whether we’re talking about the Yacht-Master or the Yacht-Master II — is that it has this incredible balance of luxury and sports-oriented performance. Being able to dress this watch both up and down is what makes the Rolex Yacht-Master so much fun to wear. Here are just three classic ways you can wear this watch.

Yacht-Master with Bracelets

Ladies love this watch for its luxe finishing and superior durability. What woman doesn’t want a watch they can wear to drinks, diving, or lounging in the cabana? Because of that, we love pairing a beautiful two-tone Rolex Yacht-Master with bangles and bracelets that match the gold components on the watch. For example, we love the pairing of the 29mm Lady Yacht Master ref. 169623 with a gold Cartier love bracelet bangle and a linked chain. If you’re feeling really bold, you might as well go all out and pair your gold bracelets with a solid, 18k yellow gold Yacht-Master. Fair warning: you’re going to not be able to stop staring at your wrist. Chances are, no one else will be able to either.

Dressing Up With The Matte Black ref. 268655

We love this unisex 37mm timepiece because it works equally well on both men and women’s wrists. What makes this watch so special is the rubber Oysterflex strap watch that allows it to be sporty and durable. Matching that bracelet with the matte black bezel and dial really elevates the entire watch, which looks handsome and luxurious with the warm 18k Everose gold case. So when evening comes, head to the bar for sundowners wearing this ref. 268655. Of course, it will look good with a dark jacket. But, this watch will really pop if you pair it with a warm-colored shirt that accentuates the natural Everose hue. Finish the outfit off with dark wash jeans and you’ve mastered the elegant-meets-accessible look that defines this modern luxury watch.

Casual Elegance with the Yacht Master II

The two-tone Everose Rolesor Yacht-Master II is the ultimate luxury sports watch. You have luxury elements like the ceramic Cerachrom blue bezel and 18k Everose gold alongside durable Oystersteel and one of Rolex’s most complicated mechanisms to date. Because of this watch’s exclusivity, durability, water resistance, and functionality, there really isn’t a better choice for spending time on the high seas. And while this watch was built to time out a regatta, it is going to look just as good on your wrist while you lounge, swim, and play. We suggest pairing your Two-Tone Everose Rolesor’s blue bezel with a matching blue suit. Alternatively, you can pair it with a white and blue pinstripe shirt, rolling up the sleeves and unbuttoning the top few buttons to make your look feel more casual.

Frequently Asked Questions About The Rolex Yacht-Master

What is the difference between the yacht master and the yacht master ii.

The standard Rolex Yacht-Master is a luxury-oriented sport watch that displays the time and date. The Yacht-Master II joined the Rolex lineup in 2007 and offers never before seen functionality thanks to its regatta timer. Powered by the Calibre 4161 — one of the most complicated Rolex movements ever made (second only to the annual calendar found in the Sky-Dweller — the Yacht-Master II has a patented mechanical memory and on-the-fly-synchronization used for the regatta timer. Additionally, the bezel is different on the Yacht-Master II because it controls part of the movement inside the case rather than just working as an external mechanism to help track elapsed time. The Rolex Yacht-Master II also has an entirely different aesthetic and features a larger 44m case with chronograph pushers on either side of the winding crown.

Is a Rolex Yacht Master a good investment?

Yes. The Rolex Yacht-Master is a good investment for collectors for two main reasons. For one, these watches have historically held great value because of their uniqueness and sportiness; however, at the present time, they remain somewhat undervalued compared to their siblings in the Rolex catalog. Consequently, they offer significant potential for appreciation in the future. Secondly, the Rolex Yacht-Master is a luxury watch and is often outfitted in precious metals. These precious metals inherently allow it to hold great value as the years go on, and its premium construction guarantees that it will always be worth something.

What was the Rolex Yacht-Master built to do?

The Rolex Yacht-Master was first created as a luxury sports watch, whereas the Yacht-Master II was built as a professional regatta timer with a luxury flare. Comparatively, the Yacht-Master can time events up to 60 minutes with its rotating bezel and the Yacht-Master II is outfitted with a countdown timer with flyback or fly-forward functionality to use when timing out a regatta race.

How do you use the Yachtmaster II?

While the Yacht-Master II looks quite complicated, Rolex has made sure that using it is actually quite intuitive. After setting the adjustable countdown timer to your desired setting, you start the time. Press the top button to start the countdown timer, then pressing the top button a second time will stop the timer. However, by pressing the bottom button while the chronograph is running, that will adjust the timer forwards or backward to the nearest minute — allowing it to be perfectly synchronized to the official race clock.

How can I spot a fake Rolex Yacht Master?

As with any Rolex watch, the clues are in the details. When it comes to the Yacht-Master, you’re going to want to look at details like the adjustable countdown timer, which is incredibly complicated, making it almost impossible for fake counterfeit watches to replicate. Additionally, Yacht-Master models are luxury sports watches crafted from the world’s best materials and to the highest possible standards. If you notice any defects like dial printing or finishing looks less than perfect, there is a good chance that you are dealing with a fake Rolex Yacht-Master.

Rolex Yacht-Master 126622

Before we get to my Rolex Yacht-Master 40 126622 review, we need some background. In 1992 Rolex introduced a watch that shared the silhouette of their beloved Submariner but in solid 18k yellow gold, embossed YG bezel insert soldered to the bezel, funky white dial, and the unusual name “Yacht-Master” written where “Submariner” would normally live. People then and now still wonder.. “Why?”.

Rumor has it Rolex wanted to drastically update the Submariner but were scared that the changes were too extreme. The Submariner was essentially their poster child and arguably their most iconic watch. Fearing backlash, they created a whole new line. Rolex rarely creates completely new watches, the last time they made a new watch before the Rolex Yacht-Master was in 1964 when the Daytona was introduced. Luckily it paid off as the Yacht-Master was pretty well received!

Even though the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 at first glance looks very similar to the Submariner it’s a totally different wearing experience. The case shape is completely different from the Sub. Its case profile is composed of compound curves with the lugs swooping downwards very similar to a Daytona, the case is also fully polished. My particular Rolex Yacht-Master 40 126622 being Roleisum (Rolex’s term for the combination of Platinum and Steel which was first introduced in 1999 with the ref. 16622), in combination with the blue sunburst dial and red accents, gives it such a unique aesthetic it sets it apart in Rolex’s catalog. Rolex I think perfected their blue dials, it’s absolutely gorgeous! Pictures do not do it justice whatsoever. In person, it appears much darker, almost black however in direct light that’s when the striking blue hue pops. The date function is also very convenient!

Rolex Yacht-Master

What is it like to wear a Rolex Yacht-Master? I would describe it as the most comfortable and stressful watch I have ever worn and owned. What most people don’t realize is that it’s a thin watch and I mean THIN. At 11.5mm it’s just as thin or even thinner than a 34mm 114200 Air-King! Like what? The case hugs your wrist amazingly while the oyster bracelet seems to caress you. It makes you want to wear it every single day, I mean how could you not? Thin, sporty, beautiful, comfortable and low key a strap monster. Until you see a scratch or nick on the solid Platinum bezel insert, call up Rolex Service Center to see how much it would be to replace it and they slap you in the face with a $2500 (before taxes) quote for JUST the bezel/bezel insert assembly (they’re soldered together remember?). Then you think “Okay, okay which Seiko ’s do I sell to cover the cost of a freaking bezel”. Did I mention the case is fully polished?

Has this ever happened to me? No, because I’m extremely OCD, however I was curious and called RSC, I also used to own the 16622 and was trained to wear long sleeves only, only wear it sparingly, cover my wrist when walking through doorways, never let it touch denim (yes, denim will scratch it apparently), and for all I know never sneeze near it or even look at it too long because for all I know that could probably scratch it too. To top it all off, of COURSE the bracelet and clasp has Polished Center Links! While I am exaggerating the fragility of the Rolex Yacht-Master, the stress of potentially scuffing it is real.

Rolex Yacht-Master

The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 126622 is arguably one of my favorite watches ever made. I never thought I’d ever get to own one. It’s beautiful, ridiculously comfortable, relatively uncommon, however so stressful to wear. I have owned it for almost exactly one year and I personally try to enjoy every second I wear it; I even strap changed it with zero scuffs! I have and I do but my OCD and extreme caution lends itself to be a difficult one to fully appreciate without worry. I’ve debated if this watch was right for me all the time. However, I would recommend this watch to anyone minutely interested. I have no regrets having owned two of them like an insane person, but who in the watch collecting world isn’t insane?

Rolex Yacht-Master 40 126622

  • Very comfortable to wear.
  • Beautiful aesthetics.
  • Has many color ways.
  • Stressful to wear.
  • Scratches relatively easily.
  • Difficult to even buy.

The art of command

The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II in Oystersteel and Everose gold with an Oyster bracelet and a bidirectional rotatable bezel with a blue Cerachrom insert .

Ring command bezel, a synchronized countdown.

Rolex achieved perfection when it turned its attention to redefining the purpose and functionality of the bezel. Typically, a bezel operates independently from the internal mechanism; however, the Ring Command bezel in the Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph operates in conjunction with it.

As a mechanical component linked to the movement, the bezel literally acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.

A characteristic aesthetic

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a new dial, and new hands that are characteristic of Rolex Professional models, enhancing legibility and sharpening its aesthetic appeal. The dial now features a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock for more intuitive reading of the watch.

A luminescent disc on the hour hand clearly distinguishes it from the minute hand. The Yacht-Master II’s countdown can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting. Once launched, the countdown can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.

Everose Rolesor

A meeting of two metals.

Gold is coveted for its lustre and nobility. Steel reinforces strength and reliability. Together, they harmoniously combine the best of their properties.

A true Rolex signature, Rolesor has featured on Rolex models since the early 1930s, and was trademarked as a name in 1933. It is one of the prominent pillars of the Oyster collection.

The Oyster bracelet

Alchemy of form and function.

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex.

This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.
