Moscow Bridges

In may this year moscow authorities have completed the make-over of 22 bridges around moscow river bank adding new lighting to the bridges..

In May this year Moscow authorities have completed the make-over of 22 bridges around Moscow river bank adding new lighting to the bridges. Total 4,500 LED lamps were installed creating a totally new summery look for the city’s bridges. The lighting suits the surroundings of the bridges, for instance bridges that are closer to the city centre have a more mallow warm illumination.

In light of this recent transformation to the Moscow’s river bank, I decided to write a post about the most interesting and beautiful bridges in Moscow. There are quite a few lovely river bank walks and handsome bridges in Russia’s capital that may add a touch of romance to your stay in our city.

There are around 450 bridges in Moscow. Not all of them are crossings over the Moscow River. There are some other smaller rivers in the city too. Most of the bridges are not particularly interesting or aesthetically pleasing. I would say there are about 30 to 50 of them that are worth looking at and carry some historical value.

Many historical bridges from the prerevolutionary Russia were rebuilt or removed completely during the 1930-1940 Stalin’s reconstruction of the city which needed to accommodate spacious roads, new buildings and new life style. During that period Moskva river was connected to Volga river through the Moscow canal which resulted in increased water levels and made old bridges obsolete.

In this post I will mention the top 8 Moscow bridges in my opinion.

Pushkinsky Bridge

This beautiful pedestrian bridge over the Moscow River connecting Pushkinskaya Embankment and Frunsenskaya Embankment was build not that long ago – in 1999-2000 using some of the constructions of the old Andreevsky rail bridge erected between 1905-07. The name of the bridge is often confused with the bridge where the main supporting arc comes from as there is a plate next to the Pushkinsky most with a short history of the Andreevsky Bridge.

Old Andreevsky Rail Bridge

Here is a nice post about how Andreevsky bridge became Pushkinsky bridge (in Russian).

Krymsky Bridge

Krymsky Most or Crimean Bridge is the only suspension bridge in Moscow. It was build in 1938 as part of the big Stalin’s reconstruction of the city where lots of historical buildings were demolished to give way to modern highways, wide roads and metro network. Krymsky Bridge is part of Sadovoe Kolco highway, and thus it’s hard to catch it without any cars racing by.

Patriarshy Bridge

Patriarshy bridge situated right opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Savior was opened in 2004. It spans over Moskva river and Vodootvodny canal. This bridge became very popular among newly weds (no wonder, Moscow’s main cathedral is a great site for wedding photos). One will notice lots of locks with names of couples who decided to ‘immortalize’ their love with a metal lock – this is a recent trend for Moscow’s newly weds.

Borodinsky Bridge

Situated about 2 kilometers west from the Kremlin, Borodinsky bridge was originally built in 1911-1912 to commemorate the victory in Napoleonic war. From 1788 there stood another bridge called Dorogomilovsky which was used by the Russian and French armies during the 1812 war. In 1867-68 it was replaced by a more solid bridge named Borodinsky after the Battle at Borodino, but in 1911 it was again replaced by a more spacious bridge to adjust to an increased traffic at that time. The bridge was also reconstructed in 1952 and in 1999-2001.

Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge

The Great Stone Bridge is not so much a stone bridge, it is actually a steel arch bridge in the centre of Moscow. It got its name from its predecessor – the first stone bridge ever built in Moscow. It was erected in the 17th century. At that time the project was so expensive that it created a saying among Muscovites “even more expensive than the Great Stone Bridge” when referred to something dear. Because the old bridge was much wider than some of the streets in Moscow, one could find shops, pubs and other buildings on the edges of the bridge. At the end of the 18th century the bridge suffered some damage after a number of destructive floods in the city, and by the middle of the 19th century the bridge became rather shabby and unstable which brought the decision to knock it down. The demolition was not so easy due to the solid brickwork meant to stand for centuries. Many Muscovites regretted the disappearance of the old bridge as it was considered an important historical landmark of the city.

Painting by Fyodor Alekseev “The View of The Moscow Kremlin from the Bolshoy Kamenny Most side”, 1800

Old Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge Photo

The new bridge constructed in 1858 was the first steel bridge in Moscow. However, due to some design faults that did not allow for increased traffic in the city, the bridge had to be demolished and replaced by the current bridge in 1938. Bolshoy Kamenny Most today offers a great view of the Moscow Kremlin, and The Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

Zhivopisny Bridge

Picturesque Bridge

This cable stayed bridge in the West of the city is one of the most impressive bridges in Moscow in my opinion. Opened in 2007 it is not only the first cable-stayed bridge in Moscow but is the highest bridge of this kind in Europe. The name of the bridge is translated as Picturesque bridge. It is about 1,5 km long, 37 meters wide and 105 meters high. At the top of the arc one will see a disc object resembling an alien space ship. This was first meant to be a restaurant but due to difficulties with the fire safety and sanitation (basically no toilets), the project was abandoned. It is rumored that it was planned to set up a registrar office there (it would have been an awesome venue to get married), however, I don’t think such plans came to fruition.

Bohdan Khmelnitsky Bridge

Most Bohdana Khmelnitskogo

Also known as Kievsky bridge. It is a modern 235 meter steel pedestrian bridge in the centre of Moscow. Opened in 2001 it is named after the famous Ukrainian leader of the 17th century. The main supporting structure of the bridge was taken from the old Krasnoluzhsky bridge built in 1907. In 2002 the bridge became the record holding bridge for the most number of simultaneously kissing couples. 2,226 people shared a kiss there on the 16th of February 12 years ago.

Million Bridge

Officially called Rostokino Aqueduct (an artificial channel for conveying water), this is the oldest existing bridge in Moscow spanning over Yauza river. Commissioned by Catherine the Great it was built between 1780 and 1804 as part of the first Moscow’s centralized water utility. Before the 1780s there was no centralized water utility in Moscow, and after the plague of 1771, it became quite clear that the city needed one badly. It took almost a quarter of a century and over 1,5 million rubles (immense sum of money at that time, hence the unofficial name Millionny Most) to build Rostokino water bridge. Being 356 meters long and 15 meters hight, the aqueduct was the largest stone bridge in Russia at that time. During the Soviet times Rostokino Aqueduct held heating pipes at the top, but in 2006-07 it was refurbished and opened as a pedestrian bridge.

All You Need to Know about Moscow River and Moscow Bridges

Moscow Bridge. Photo by Alexander Smagin

Moscow River is the main waterway of the Russian capital. Within the city, its length is 80 km, width varies from 120 m to 200 m. The narrowest part of the river is located near the Kremlin, and the most extensive is near the Luzhniki Stadium that hosted World Cup 2018 . The depth of the Moscow River averages from 3m to 6m, and in some places it reaches 14 m.

Taking a walk along the Moscow River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation of Moscow in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th century.

While traveling on the Moscow River, in short time and without traffic jams or tiresome walking, you can see all the gems of historical and cultural center of the capital.

Depending on the itinerary and duration of the Moscow River cruise, the tour can be 3 or 5 hours tour.

Undoubtedly, Moscow bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots of Moscow, as well as the most romantic. Here is our short overview of them:

Great Stone Bridge – is the main bridge of Moscow. Back in the 17th century on this site was constructed the first stone bridge of Moscow.

Patriarshy Bridge is one of the youngest bridges of Moscow, built in 2004. The bridge is pedestrian and connect the Christ the Saviour Cathedral with Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s to address the nation on his New Years’ speeches.

Borodinsky Bridge erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Borodino, a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812, which every schoolboy in Russia knows about.

Bagration Bridge one of the pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was built to mark the 850th anniversary of Moscow in 1997.

Krymsky Bridge was in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges back in the early 20th century. The bridge was named after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to attack the Russian capital in the 16 th century.

And now let’s slightly move to the embankments of Moscow river! It has 37 embankments and the most popular are Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

Pushkinskaya embankment is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Green theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.

Vorobyevskaya embankment is part of Vorobyevy Gory (Sparrow Hills) nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is believed to be the place for taking serious decision in life.

Embankment in Kolomenskoye has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The river journey around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.

Taras Shevchenko embankment is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.

Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. Almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

9 Things to See in Moscow's Red Square

 Sir Francis Canker/Getty Images

In most cases, you'll be entering Red Square from the north, passing landmarks such as the Bolshoi Theatre and Duma parliament building as you make your way southward. Although you don't necessarily have to pass through the Voskresensky (or Resurrection in English) Gates in order to gain access to the square these days, they definitely provide a sense of arrival, to say nothing of the way their left arch frame's St. Basil's Cathedral if you look from just the right angle.

An interesting fact is that while a gate of some kind has stood here since the mid-16th century, the one you currently see wasn't built until 1994, having been destroyed in 1931 so that tanks could enter and exit Red Square during military parades.

St. Basil's Cathedral

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Few sights are as iconic not only of Moscow and Red Square but indeed of Russia than St. Basil's Cathedral, whose colorful, onion-shaped domes are a symbol of the country around the world. Officially known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, this church has stood since 1561, which is quite miraculous when you consider all the turbulent history that has transpired since then.

Among other things, religion was severely prohibited during the Soviet period , which led some to believe that this emblem of the Russian Orthodox church might not withstand the tenure of the USSR.

An interesting fact is that St. Basil's is the so-called "Kilometer Zero" of Russia; all of Moscow's main roads (which can take you anywhere in Russia) begin at the exits to Red Square. In this way, St. Basil's iconic status also has an extremely tangible element.

The Kremlin

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

When you think of The Kremlin, it's unlikely that positive images enter your mind. The fact that simply saying the word "Kremlin" is too vague a descriptor (most Russian cities have their own Kremlin complexes; you should say "Moscow Kremlin") notwithstanding, this misunderstood place is incredibly beautiful, even if you don't like the policy that comes out of it.

Senate Square

In spite of its name, which refers to the role the building that rises above the square played during Imperial Russia, Senate Square is actually home to Russia's presidential administration, currently helmed by Vladimir Putin. In order to see where Russia's legislature operates from, walk just outside Red Square to the Duma parliament building.

Dormition Cathedral

Dating back to the year 1479, the gold-domed Dormition Cathedral pays homage to an Orthodox religious feast that commemorates the death of the Virgin Mary . As is the case with St. Basil's, it is curious that such a conspicuously religious structure was able to survive through the Soviet period.

Armoury Chamber

Though it takes its name from the fact that it housed Russia's royal arsenal when it was built in the 16th century, the most notable resident of the Kremlin's Armoury Chamber today is the Russian Diamond Fund.

Notable Kremlin Towers

Robert Schrader

The interior of the Moscow Kremlin is more beautiful and inviting than you'd expect, but the walls and towers that rise around it better live up to the intimidation with which the complex is associated.

Borovitskaya Tower

Named to commemorate the dense forest that once stood atop the mount where it's built, this tower is extremely picturesque. Built in the late 15th century, it's visible from most places in the square, and also as you walk along the Moskva River.

Nikolskaya Tower

Also built in the year 1491, this tower currently suffered destruction at the hands of Napoleon's army in the 19th century. What you see now is the result of an 1816 re-design and renovation, though artillery fire during the Russian Revolution also caused superficial damage to the tower, named to honor St. Nikolas of Mozhaysk , so it's difficult to know which elements of it are original.

Spasskaya Tower

Known in English as the "Savior's Tower," this iconic, star-topped tower is perhaps the best-known of all the Kremlin's towers. Built in 1491 like the other two towers on this list, it's certainly the most photographed. As a result of its proximity to St. Basil's, it often makes its way into tourists' pictures.

Mausoleum of Lenin

Just as it's strange to learn how many religious monuments survived through the Soviet period, it's a bit odd to think that Lenin's preserved body still sits in a mausoleum just beneath the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square, given the lack of consensus about the ultimate impact of his Revolution, even in Russia.

It's not guaranteed that you'll be able to see the body (which, believe it or not, seems to be improving with age ) when you go, and if you do you will likely have to wait in line, but even strolling past the outside of the Lenin Mausoleum, flanked by stone-faced guards that almost look like statues, illuminates the gravity of his body still being here.

GUM Shopping Center

You might cringe, at least initially, when you realize that one of the most iconic stops on a tour of Red Square is a department store—until you see said department store, that is. Built in 1893 and known during Soviet times as the State Department Store, GUM  ( Glávnyj Universáľnyj Magazín or Main Universal Store in English) hearkens back to the grandeur of the late 19th century, both seen from the outside (especially, when lit up at night) and the interior, which might have you feeling like you're further west in Europe.

A trip inside GUM is a particularly good idea during winter, when frigid temperatures outside will have you savoring the heat, the quality of souvenirs, confections and other goods sold inside notwithstanding. Also, make sure not to confuse GUM with CDM, which sits near the Bolshoi Theatre, even though both are stunning and iconic in their own right.

State Historical Museum

The Russian State Historical Museum is located near Voskresensky Gates, though you should wait until after you've seen the first few attractions of Red Square and the Kremlin to head back there and go inside. To be sure, as you pass by its facade (whose late-19th century grandeur somewhat obscures that fact that it's currently a museum accessible to the public) you might not even think to try and gain entry.

Once inside the museum, you can plan to spend at least a couple of hours, given that artifacts here date back to the very beginning of the Russian state in the ninth century. As is the case with GUM, this will be a particularly alluring prospect if you visit in winter, when Moscow is arguably at its most beautiful, but certainly at its least tolerable.

Minin-Pozharsky Monument

It's somewhat easy to disregard this monument, which pays homage to the two Russian princes who ended the so-called "Time of Troubles" in the mid-16th century, during which Polish-Lithuanian forces occupied Russia, among other awful things including a famine. That's because the statue currently sits just at the base of St. Basil's Cathedral, which makes it very difficult to photograph or even see without being overwhelmed by that much more famous edifice.

Though the statue originally sat at the very center of Red Square, it came to be an obstacle to the movement of tanks during the Soviet period, much like the Voskresensky Gates. As a result, authorities moved it during that time, and it's stayed where you currently find it ever since.

Kazan Cathedral

Taken by itself, the smokey-pink Kazan Cathedral is an architectural marvel; originally built in the 17th century, the church you find here today, located just north of the GUM department store, dates back only to 1993.

Unfortunately, since it sits not only in the shadow of GUM, but also in the shadow St. Basil's and the Towers of the Kremlin, it's easy to miss entirely if you aren't looking. As a result, you might wait until you've seen just about everything else in Red Square before coming here to take photos, and to appreciate the understated beauty of this oft-overlooked cathedral.

Moskva River

As you head south from St. Basil's Cathedral to exit Red Square, make sure to walk onto Bolshoy Moskvoretskiy Bridge, which crosses the Moskva River. If you look due north, you can get an excellent shot of the church framed, on the left, by the towers of the Kremlin. Directing your gaze a bit to the west allows you to see the skyscrapers of Moscow City as they rise above the Kremlin's walls.

Walking westward along the riverbank is also a worthwhile excursion, for the views it provides of Red Square and the Kremlin, as well as the fact that doing so takes you to other iconic Moscow attractions, including Gorky Park and the Pushkin Museum. The views you enjoy from the river and the bridge are particularly stunning at night, though you should make sure you bring a tripod if you want to get a clear picture, given how strong winds over and near the river can be.

Designed by Sir Christopher Wren (architect of the 51 city structures, including the iconic St Paul's Cathedral), The Monument was built to commemorate the Great Fire of London and is one of the best ways to enjoy spectacular views of London while learning about an important moment in London's history.

Tower Pier and Tower Millennium Pier are the same pier. Some people just remove the word “Millennium” as it can be a bit of a mouthful. If you’re visiting London and are worried about reaching the right place, don’t worry! Everyone will know which pier you mean, no matter which version you choose.

The nearest tube station is Tower Hill Station, which can be reached via a short walk (usually around 7 minutes). However, the pier is also well located for onward travel on local rail services (from Fenchurch Street) and DLR services (from Tower Gateway).

The best postcode to use is EC3N 4DT. However, please be aware that the pier is a short walk from the road so please allow time to walk if you are bringing bags with you!

Yes, you can touch in and touch out with contactless payment cards or Oyster to pay as you go on all of our river boat services.

Yes, tickets can be bought at ticket machines at the pier before travel.

There’s a $592 million project coming for a bridge on a CT interstate. It won’t be done until 2029.

It’s a $591.9 million, multi-year project on a Connecticut interstate.

The northbound deck of the Gold Star Memorial Bridge needs to be replaced, and a public information meeting will be held April 30 to provide the details and offer an opportunity for questions.

The bridge links New London and Groton across the Thames River on Interstate 95.

“The Gold Star Bridge is a vital structure for New London and Groton residents, major employers, and freight movement along the I-95 corridor,” said state Department of Transportation Project Manager Tracey Brais in a statement.

“This project will address existing bridge deterioration, increase the bridge’s load carrying capacity, and extend its service life,” Brais said. “We encourage the public to attend this meeting to share their feedback with the CTDOT project team to incorporate into the design.”

The project will replace the deck and strengthen the steel superstructure to improve freight travel across the Thames.

It will increase the structural capacity of the bridge, improve safety and continue to meet the traffic demands for the region, according to the statement. The U.S. Naval Submarine Base , and the United States Coast Guard Academy are both nearby and I-95 is a major corridor through New England.

Construction will begin in summer 2025, assuming funds are available, rights of way are acquired and permits are approved.

The estimated construction cost is $591.9 million, including $158.2 million in Bridge Investment Project Grant funds , 90% federal funds and 10% state funds. It is scheduled to be completed in March 2029.

The Gold Star Memorial Bridge was originally constructed in 1943, and a major superstructure rehabilitation was performed in the 1970s.

In the 1990s, multiple rehabilitation projects were completed to improve bridge conditions. In 2014, there was a bearing replacement project for half of the expansion bearings on the approach spans. In 2018, improvements were completed on the southbound span. In 2020, the project on the northbound span began.

The hybrid meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Groton Municipal Building, 295 Meridian St. It will be offered on Zoom as well. To register for Zoom, go to https://bit.ly/gold-star-bridge . The meeting also will be livestreamed on YouTube at portal.ct.gov/ctdotvpimarchive . No registration is required for YouTube.

A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation, which will be recorded. For instructions on accessing the meeting and ways to provide comments and ask questions, visit https://portal.ct.gov/DOTGoldStar94-235VPIM .

Members of the public can submit comments and questions during the two-week public comment period after the meeting, which ends May 14. Send them to [email protected] or call 860-594-2020.
