The MY6: Designed for Live-Aboard Cruising

By james tiernan , president of acy texas, and eric smith , senior yacht consultant and partner.

The MY6 (formerly the MY44) is purpose-built to be the ultimate in liveaboard cruising — lighter, stronger, faster, and easier to handle with far greater range. Fountaine Pajot has been building motor yachts longer than any other company in the world, and it shows in the thoughtful, inspired design of the MY6. While other power catamarans place emphasis on their design on the charter market, Fountaine Pajot’s key design focus is on liveaboard cruising, with owners at the center.

“We don’t compromise for charter, so we can build a more luxurious boat,” Fountaine Pajot’s Deputy General Manager Romain Motteau told Power & Motor Yacht Magazine recently. “This is why we are focused on targeting private owners.”

So what does designing for live-aboard cruising really mean when it comes to the features and layout of the MY6?

More Functional Living Space Than Any Other Power Catamaran

Interior of the Fountaine Pajot MY6

With more functional living space than any other motor yacht, the living space and extra storage accommodate weeks and months aboard rather than just a few days. The full owner’s hull offers privacy to owners while guests or kids are onboard. In addition, the MY6’s wider hulls allow for a better layout in the owner’s cabin, with a sideways-facing king-size bed facing the picture window to the sea.

The MY6, by not having the door going forward, has a fourth “bonus cabin” that can be customized for storage, an office, or any kind of owner’s space desired.

In the main saloon, you’ll find three huge lockers including one that is often made into a deep freezer for longer trips. You’ll also find two stand-up bow storage lockers for long-term cruising needs, such as scuba gear, extra clothes, or pantry space. Custom racks and bins can be constructed for whatever you need to accommodate.

Smarter Design for Easier Access to Controls, Engine Room, and More

The incredible thought that went into the MY6’s design translates into ease of access to controls, the engine room, the swimming platform, and more:

  • While at anchor, the hydraulic full-width swim platform offers easy access to the vessel from either a dinghy or the water. This makes everyday live aboard jobs like loading groceries from the dinghy to the boat or climbing back onboard after your morning swim or dive an easy task.
  • The owner-friendly engine room gives easy access to access motors, the generator, and water makers to carry out simple servicing. This is critical when exploring remote islands, where access to a service company may be limited. When you do need service, Fountaine Pajot has dealers worldwide, unlike other catamaran manufacturers. This has incredible value for service and spare parts for owners.
  • The cockpit has a full range of customization possibilities, as does the flybridge. Joystick setup is available for any location on the boat. Adding one to the aft cockpit is a popular option for our couple cruisers.
  • In various reviews, the MY6 was rated as having the most comfortable seating (with ergonomic backrests), both inside and in the cockpit, of any boat tested—not so important on a charter boat, but very important on a privately owned boat.

Fountaine Pajot MY6 Swim Platform

Quieter by Design

The mechanical and electrical systems and the engine of the MY6 are designed to deliver a quieter experience. The reverse AC uses a chiller system, rather than individual compressors for each zone, with the central chiller in the quiet, insulated engine compartment. Individual cabins have no noise from a compressor running in the cabin, just whisper-quiet air handlers fed from the chiller.

Ken Krasco, Atlantic Cruising Yacht’s director of commissioning, is an electrical engineer and has designed systems incorporating Lithium batteries, major solar cells, upgraded inverters, and controllers—all to make a boat that can run at night without the noise of the generator.

IPS Drives for Better Cruising Performance

The Volvo IPS drives on the MY6 more versatile boat speed, and ease of maneuvering for couples cruisers or single handling operation. IPS drives are also about 20-30% more fuel-efficient than shaft drives, which translate to better cruising range.

Overall, the IPS drives are more maneuverable, without the need for separate thrusters, which can be detrimental to overall performance.

In addition to the IPS drives, the hull design of the MY6 creates a number of performance advantages. The wave-piercing hull is designed for offshore cruising and has been shown in studies to deliver excellent seaworthiness and stability regardless of speed. The wider hull allows the yacht to achieve fuel-efficient planing speeds up to 30mph.

To sum up, the MY6 is the latest in a range of Fountaine Pajot Motor Yachts that are purpose-built for private owners with extended live aboard applications. Leica Just Resurrected Its Legendary M6 Camera. Here’s Every Step It Takes to Make It.

Leica M6 Camera

As modern digital cameras put ever more megapixels and endless features into the hands of the everyday shooter, what does Leica —one of the most revered names in photography—come out with for its latest release?

A film camera.

You read that right. And not even a new film camera, but a reissue of a shooter from 1984, the M6. There’s no screen to review your photos, no button to upload your selfie over Wi-Fi, and—perhaps you should sit down for this—it’s manual focus. Has the company gone verrückt ?

Not at all, insists Stefan Daniel, executive vice president of technology and operations at Leica. “The prices for the M6 on the secondhand market have been rising constantly,” he says, “and the majority of people who want it are younger.” A new generation is embracing analog photography, along with vinyl records, and Leica has been preparing for this moment.

“We never stopped making film cameras,” says Andrea Pacella, director of global marketing and communication at Leica, “even when sales of film were zero and we were only selling one camera per day worldwide . Any other company would have stopped.” And now that there’s a bull market, reissuing the M6 was a natural choice. During its initial 18-year run, nearly 175,000 units sold, making it one of the company’s most popular models.

Why is the M6 so in demand? Leica believes it’s the simplicity. “It has nothing too much and nothing too less,” says Daniel. “Just what you need to make great photographs. Nothing else. It gave rebirth to rangefinder photography.”

So the next time you find yourself sorting through 5,000 digital photos from your vacation, consider how an M6 may have made things easier. “When you shoot film, you have to think before you press the button,” Daniel explains. “It will cost you money, and you only have 36 options. That makes it precious and authentic. Maybe we needed this digital revolution to value film again.”

Robb Report visited Leica’s home base in Wetzlar, Germany, to watch the manufacturing team prepare this new version of the classic camera for its close-up.

1. Have Camera, Will Travel

reportage yacht m6

The M6 begins its journey at Leica’s Portugal facility, where the company relocated its older machines for producing film-camera parts. “Thank God we didn’t throw them away,” says Pacella. Technicians give each model over 16 hours of individual attention, crafting the instrument from more than 1,100 parts, rigorously testing it and fine-tuning any adjustments before shipping it to Wetzlar. “Like a great watch, every piece is mounted and checked by hand.”

2. All-Seeing Eyes

reportage yacht m6

One of the most complex components of the M6 is the rangefinder, which uses a series of prisms and lens elements to help the photographer frame and focus the shot. In Portugal, an optical team and a mechanical team take turns progressively building it from about 150 components. Then, in Germany, an optics expert calibrates the rangefinder using a more precise digital “eye” to see through the viewfinder. These tweaks are the most crucial part of the process.

3. Warning: This Doesn’t Make It Waterproof

reportage yacht m6

The cloth shutter system is essentially the same design used by Leica since the mid-20th century. The rubber-coated material was originally procured from a German raincoat company but now comes from a standard supplier. In Portugal, the curtains are run through the old machines by hand for stitching—the crew have maintained a skill no longer required in digital-camera production. In Germany, the shutter is checked at all speeds, from one second to 1/1,000 of a second.

4. The Big Picture

reportage yacht m6

The main body of the M6 is made from magnesium alloy, and the top plate, which covers the rangefinder and the camera’s electronics, is milled from brass. Both are sanded and polished by hand to remove the rough edges, then covered in anodized black paint. Once the inner mechanisms of the camera have passed inspection, they’re placed inside and the top plate is attached to the body.

5. Bells and Whistles and Buttons

reportage yacht m6

Next, the shutter button, the film-advance lever, the shutter-speed dial and the rewind crank are secured to the top of the camera. The frame counter is checked for accuracy to ensure that you don’t lose track of how many of the 36 frames you have left.

6. Local Hero

reportage yacht m6

A member of the final assembly team lines up the leatherette that will cover the M6 body on an old green press machine, which imprints the “Made in Germany” stamp. Quality has always been key to Leica’s reputation and explains why its cameras and lenses actually appreciate over time—the reason many photographers don’t mind investing more in a Leica system than in other brands.

7. Getting Dressed

reportage yacht m6

Some parts, such as the lens mount, are temporarily removed from the main body in order to apply the leatherette covering. (Anything that would require adjustment remains in place so as not to defeat the purpose of all the prior testing.) The self-adhesive cover is pulled off the back, and the leatherette is centered over the lens opening, then carefully pressed down to the outer edges.

8. Back Where It Began

reportage yacht m6

Ernst Leitz founded his eponymous company in 1869 to make microscopes—it wasn’t until 1986 that the name was changed to Leica (a portmanteau of his surname and “camera”), thanks to what had become its most popular product. Here, as with the original M6, the name Leitz is written on the famous red dot, which, along with the camera’s distinctive shape, makes the brand instantly recognizable.

9. Almost as Confusing as a Rotary Phone

reportage yacht m6

At last the camera is loaded with a dummy roll of 35 mm film and checked to make sure all is working properly. It goes through a wind test and a pressure test to confirm that the film presses and moves along the back plate correctly. Some of the company’s most popular YouTube videos feature snippets demonstrating how to load film into a camera—something today’s younger generations likely have no experience doing.

10. Everything in Focus

Leica M6 Camera

Leica intends the M6 to be more than a retro novelty. “I know someone who is the only American abbot of a Tibetan Buddhist abbey in north India,” says Pacella. “He left everything to follow the Dalai Lama. The only earthly possession he still has is his Leica camera, which he uses to document his life. Limited controls [and] manual focusing somehow bring mindfulness. Having to fight some odds is a great way to apply your mind.”

Fountaine Pajot MY6

Specifications, fountaine pajot my6 - bareboat motor boats.

In 2021 Fountaine Pajot renamed their luxury motor yachts - the MY40 to 'MY 5' and MY44 to 'MY 6'. These are lighter and ultimately logical names as they better reflect the space on board. The two motor yachts having equivalent float surface areas of 50 and 60 feet respectively. Apart from that they remain the familiar motor boats that meet the highest standard for charter vacationing in performance, comfort aboard and value.

reportage yacht m6

The Fountaine Pajot MY6  is the perfect motor yacht, balancing performance and comfort to meet your expectations of speed, low fuel consumption, space, stability, and elegance. Its vibration-free guarantee ensures quieter and better handling with lower fuel consumption.

With onboard technology, outstanding navigation from cockpits, low environmental impact, uncompromising comfort and safety, this is the ultimate luxury yachting.

The MY5s living spaces provide a welcoming and friendly setting, with much larger areas than those of a monohull of the same size. The luxurious and welcoming interior has a master suite with Italian-style bathroom plus two double guest cabins, meaning there's space aplenty above and below decks.

Urban Soundtracks: Rostov-on-Don According to Motorama

' src=

For reasons unknown to me, Russian music has never broken into the Western consciousness, beyond that brief t.A T.u phase in the 2000’s. Americans just never caught on to the wonder that is Philipp Kirkorov, I suppose. Nonetheless,  Motorama has carved out a small niche for themselves as an underground hit. Maybe this is down to their lyrics being in English, or perhaps it’s the fact that they have a near-perfect capacity to summarize our twisted emotional landscape with their own brand of Post Punk.

Hailing from Rostov, Russia, they were formed outside the Moscow and Saint Petersburg cultural centers, which produce the bulk of the nation’s cultural exports. Known for being a far more rough city, Rostov appears to be the ideal backdrop for Motorama’s amazing capacity to engender emotions, like disappointment and anxiety. However, little writing is produced about the city and it attracts few tourists from outside Russia. As such, we spoke to  Vladislav Parshin from the band, and he kindly put together a bit of a mix to understand the place a bit more.

For most people anything outside of Russia, the country is a complete mystery. How did being from Rostov shape your musical tastes and you guys as artists?

For me the main influence was my father who showed me tons of great music from the Soviet Union and abroad and all these songs formed my tastes. Rostov-on-Don is also an important part of shaping the taste, as I knew personally the members of the New Wave/Post-Punk 90’s bands like Elen  and Matrosskaya Tishina , they influenced me in the beginning of the 2000’s.

It is interesting looking at musical scenes that are outside the centers of arts like Manchester, Seattle, and Louisville. It is as if being removed from the mainstream conversation allows you to produce something completely unique and personal. To a certain degree, do you think that your band was almost blessed to be outside the major cities of mainstream culture?

I won’t say that it was a blessing, but it was fine for us as a band. I think that living outside the big cultural spots is a good chance for creating something by yourself, you have more free time, instead of visiting never ending exhibitions, concerts and parties. But at the same time it’s harder to meet people who share the same ideas and who can help you in what you are doing. In general I feel comfortable living in Rostov-on-Don, we are flying to Moscow and St. Petersburg from time to time only because of the concerts.

The mix is fantastic. It is very Post Punk/synth-inspired. However, it is hardly the most ‘sunshine and rainbows’ mix. You’ve said in other interviews that there is nothing exciting about your home city of Rostov. Does that contribute to the sound of the mix?

I like such music and I think it suits our city.

In many articles, your work has been compared to British post-punk bands but I think it is fair to say that you’re part of a broader Soviet/post-Soviet tradition of bands like Kino. What is it about this darker style of music that continues to attract people across different generations in the former USSR?

I think that there’s a specific side in Russian character that is connected with such dark or sorrowful music. For example, lots of traditional folk songs from different parts of Russia are based on metaphysical stories connected with faith and death. All these existential problems are reflected in different art genres here, not only with music, but also literature.

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin leaves the headquarters of the Southern Military District in Rostov. He is to be exiled to Belarus.

Prigozhin claims his forces have taken control of all Rostov-on-Don military sites

Yevgeny Prigozhin says in a new video message that all military sites in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don are under the Wagner mercenary group’s control, Reuters is reporting.

The Wagner chief also says in the video, which was posted to Telegram, that he and his men are in the southern district military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don.

Prigozhin says that does not impede Russia’s conduct of what it calls a “special military operation” in Ukraine .

The Guardian has not been able to verify his claims.

Reuters is reporting that video on a pro-Wagner channel on Telegram appears to show Yevgeny Prigozhin talking to top Russian generals in what the channel says is the district military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don.

The video could not be independently verified.

Prigozhin appears to say on the video that his men will blockade Rostov-on-Don and head for Moscow unless Sergei Shoigu, the Russian defence minister, and Gen Valery Gerasimov come to them.

Rostov regional governor Vasily Golubev has also said all public events scheduled for this weekend in Rostov-on-Don have been cancelled.

Municipal transport in the city was operational “but the routes around the city centre have been changed”, he said on Telegram.

Suburban transport from Azov, Bataysk and Aksai works regularly. There are temporary restrictions on the Taganrog [port city], as well as on the northern direction from Rostov.

Some more images are emerging of Rostov-on-Don, showing police and armoured vehicles on the streets:

Police block a street

Rostov residents warned against going into city centre

The Rostov region’s governor has urged residents not to travel into Rostov-on-Don’s city centre and to avoid leaving their homes if possible.

Vasily Golubev posted on Telegram that law enforcement agencies were doing “everything necessary to ensure the safety of residents in the area”.

He said he had given “the necessary instructions to the Rostov city administration and the life support services of Rostov to take the necessary measures to preserve the normal functioning of all city systems”.

I keep the issue under control, regularly listening to reports.

Videos posted on local Rostov-on-Don Telegram channels early on Saturday showed armed men in uniform skirting the city’s regional police headquarters, belonging to the interior ministry. Reuters reported it was not immediately clear who the armed men were.

The governor of the Lipetsk region in central Russia says the M-4 motorway connecting Moscow with southern regions has been closed to traffic at the border with the Voronezh region, about 400km (250 miles) south of the Russian capital, Reuters reports.

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin appears to have sent an armed convoy of his mercenary fighters on a 1,200km (750-mile) drive towards Moscow, having said he intends to oust the military leadership.

The rising tensions between Russia and the Wagner group could affect the outcomes of the Ukraine war as it fractures Russia’s military amid Ukraine’s counteroffensive against Russian forces, according to an expert.

Jessica Genauer, an international relations expert at Flinders University in Australia, said:

There’s a lot of uncertainty at the moment as the situation is still evolving, but in any case, it’s clear this is not good news for Putin, and it’s not good news for Russia. Even if this does create widespread instability, I would see this as part of a far bigger picture that there are cracks starting to emerge in the political domain in Russia as a result of the fact Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has not succeeded in the way Putin expected.

Moscow taking anti-terrorist steps to boost security – mayor

Moscow’s mayor says anti-terrorist measures are being taken to reinforce security in the Russian capital.

Sergei Sobyanin said the city was also introducing additional checks on roads, Reuters reports.

The Institute for the Study of War has also given some useful context about Prigozhin’s focus on Rostov, which is home to the Russian southern military district command – key to Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine .

Following Wagner’s withdrawal from Bakhmut, a large number of Wagner forces likely remained in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts and also a Wagner training facility in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai, all of which are close to Rostov oblast.

That would make Rostov “the most viable target of a Wagner armed rebellion,” the US thinktank says. And an attack on the military leadership there would have “significant impacts” on the Russian war effort in Ukraine, the ISW says.

The southern military district’s 58th combined arms army is “currently decisively engaged in defensive operations against Ukrainian counteroffensives in southern Ukraine, and the command centre for the Russian joint group of forces in Ukraine as a whole”, it writes.

Rostov-on-Don is therefore a critical command and control membrane for the Russian army, and any threats to the MoD’s presence are likely to have ramifications on some critical aspects of the war effort.

Footage shows armed men skirting Rostov police HQ

Videos posted on Russian local Rostov-on-Don Telegram channels early on Saturday showed armed men in uniform skirting the city’s regional police headquarters, belonging to the interior ministry.

Reuters reports it was not immediately clear who the armed men were. The news agency was able to verify the location as the police headquarters building, but not to determine when the video was shot.

Authorities in southern Russian regions had said measures were being taken to ensure public safety after Yevgeny Prigozhin indicated he planned to despatch men to Moscow to oust the military leadership.
