RED CARPET REVIEW

How Elle Fanning Brought Grace Kelly Glamour to the Golden Globes

A Boat with Many Names

deo juvante yacht monaco

More than 60 years after Her marriage to Prince Rainier III, the sleek and regal motor yacht M/Y Grace is still a symbol of the timeless taste and elegance of Her Serene Highness Princess Grace of Monaco.

The Grace’s own historical journey, however, from its jazz-age launch as a sea-going luxury yacht to its current berth in the Pacific as a high-end charter for wildlife enthusiasts, is even more remarkable.

deo juvante yacht monaco

Constructed in South Hampton, England by the legendary Camper & Nicholsons in 1928, the 147-foot yacht Grace was originally owned by a wealthy Argentinian entrepreneur who named her Monica after his daughter which he used as a personal shuttle across the Atlantic.

Later, at the beginning of World War II, the yacht was “enlisted” by the British

deo juvante yacht monaco

Government. Stripped of her exquisite furnishings and teak paneling, the newly renamed HMS Rion was armor-plated and fitted with machine guns and depth charges to hunt and sink German submarines. Winston Churchill was even a passenger. Her finest hour, however, was when the Rion successfully rescued hundreds of British soldiers trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk.

After the war, Rion was purchased by billionaire Aristotle Onassis who restored her to her original classic beauty and renamed her Arion before offering her as a wedding gift to Prince Rainier.

Welcome to Monaco

deo juvante yacht monaco

The princely family of Monaco’s love affair with the sea is over 700 years old which young Grace Kelly discovered immediately upon arrival in the principality for Her wedding. Having sailed from America aboard the ocean liner SS Constitution with Her family, bridesmaids, and about 80 pieces of luggage, She was greeted in Monaco Harbor by the Prince aboard the newly re-christened Deo Juvante II . It was an amazing and romantic spectacle witnessed by more than 20, 000 spectators who lined the shore awaiting their new princess.

After the wedding, the royal couple began their honeymoon with a short stay in Mallorca, Spain, followed by a cruise aboard the yacht along the coasts of Corsica and Sardinia. The Deo Juvante II (named after the Monaco national slogan “with God's help”) was once again the elegant hostess to carefree, glamourous parties. The princely couple used the vessel to entertain friends, celebrities and heads of state on day-long excursions along the French and Italia n Rivieras, as well as for holidays with their growing family.

deo juvante yacht monaco

In the following four decades, the yacht was passed on to other owners bearing new names such as, the Daska , the Angela , and the Zein , and plied the Caribbean and Mediterranean seas, primarily as a charter, and at one point, heroically rescuing residents fleeing the Lebanese Civil War.

A Brave New World

In 2007, she was finally rediscovered, lovingly refurbished and renamed M/Y Grace by Quasar Expeditions , a small-group adventure company specializing in trips to the exquisite wildlife destination of Galápagos.

The new owners used the original blueprints for the hull and technical areas and recreated many of the classic luxury features restored to the highest standards, including elegant teak decking, custom leather seating and hand-crafted wooden fittings.

The result of Quasar’s painstaking restoration is a triumph, according to Vogue, “The interiors are polished and smart, and the public spaces flow effortlessly from one to the next. It is a modern vessel, timeless in its design.”

Her remarkable journey has lasted nearly a century across many seas, time zones, and equatorial borders and- what a life, filled with glamour, romance, adventure, and heroics! She remains today, like her namesake the sublime Princess Grace, an enduring icon of elegance and resilience…an eternal classic.

MONACO’S FAMOUS HISTORIC YACHTS AND MORE

deo juvante yacht monaco

The “Pacha III” looks almost “tiny” with its 36 meters, but the timeless beauty is still a place of honor in the harbor. After all, it belongs to the oldest sister of Prince Albert II, Princess Caroline . Although it is not one of the largest luxury yachts in the Principality of Monaco, it is often the center of interest. Dozens of paparazzi photos show Caroline of Hanover and her Casiraghi sprouts along with partners and friends on the legendary boat. Could she say, the 79-year-old “Pacha III” would have something to say. The yacht was bought just before the death of Caroline’s second husband, Stefano Casiraghi, son to a prominent Italian family, who died in an off-shore crash in October 1990 off the coast of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, near Monaco. Since then “Pacha III” has a special meaning for Princess Caroline and her family. In the year 2000 Stefano‘s mother, Fernanda Casiraghi-Biffi, was awarded the Foglio Italiano of Montecarlo – Foglio d’Oro Prize for her merits in charity events and as President of Engeco SAM, (now owned by Pizzarotti &C S.P.A.) a very important building company in the Principality. It is an habit to the Monaco family to have composed names yachts: Princes Rainier and Grace used to own “Stalca” St (ephanie) Al (bert) Ca (roline) a yacht, after naming Albercaro Alber (t) and Caro (line) their first yacht. Princess Stephanie named her yacht “Louine”, of course after her two first kids, Lou (is) and (Paul) ine . In the XIX and XX centuries, Prince Albert I , great-great-grandfather of Albert II, owned four, increasingly impressive research yachts: Hirondelle, Hirondelle I, Princess Alice and Princesse Alice I, named after his second beloved wife, the American-born Alice Heine , Duchess of Richelieu . Back to the Caroline and Stefano’s boat, previously she already had several names such as Briseis, Cardigrae, Priamar and Arlette II. The name “Pacha III” is made up of the initials of their three children Pierre, Andrea and Charlotte together. Pacha , means P (ierre) A (ndrea) Cha (rlotte). Also, it is a nice coincidence that the initial of Alexandra, the Caroline and Ernst August Hanover ‘s daughter, is the last letter of Pacha… Caroline had to add the “III” because there existed already a Pacha, Pacha I and a Pacha II. She was originally built in 1936 by the British shipyard Camper & Nicholson in Southampton. Her dark blue steel hull is slender 5.60 meters wide and has a draft of 2.50 meters. On board nine guests can be accommodated by seven crew members. The Grimaldi Clan uses the yacht regularly for trips in the Mediterranean. Now Caroline’s children are increasingly using the boat. So also recently newlewds Pierre Casiraghi and noblewoman Beatrice Borromeo .

deo juvante yacht monaco

Probably no other family of rulers of Europe can be seen under the media’s observation, like the Monegasque princes’ house. The millenarian history of the Grimaldis is at least as interesting as their current glamorous performances. Fast boats and beautiful women, international jet set, the Grimaldi Forum Congress Centre, the Prince’s committment to sustainability and once a year Formula 1 Grand Prix , the Rose and the Red Cross Gala, all this an much more is Monaco. But what would the dwarf state on the Côte d’Azur be without the Grimaldis? The princely family is probably the best PR machine for their country. Whether it’s the joy of the world or the catastrophe – (the Grimaldi Royal House, founded in 1297, is the oldest in Europe) the world is there live. The Grimaldis now land regularly on the covers of the boulevard and lifestyle media. The first attention is given to the first-born daughter Caroline (* 1957). The failure of their first and later annullated marriage to much older real estate agent Philippe Junot was also in the limelight as the accidental death of her second husband Stefano Casiraghi . Her last marriage to Ernst August Prinz of Hanover , to which she owes the title of Caroline Prinzessin from Hanover, always provides grateful material for the Yellow Press. Her younger sister, Stéphanie (* 1965), also contributed a lot to bringing the family back into the flash of lightning. Meanwhile the sisters have calmed down. Both engage in social projects; Caroline has three grandchildren, Stéphanie got three children from two marriages. HSH Albert II is now in the center of interest. No wonder he is a prince, he has a beautiful wife – and adorable twins.

deo juvante yacht monaco

Well, now I invite you to continue navigating the website and make a Graceful tour in the Galapagos with the Grace Yatch! Although M/Y Grace looks as young and chic today as the princess who honeymooned aboard her in the 1950s, she is nonetheless what the French call “une femme d’un certain age”: born in 1928, just before The Crash silenced the Roaring Twenties, she’s surrendered none of her youth’s glamour to the scars and wrinkles of a gallant life, including a stint chasing submarines during World War II. Combat aged on her, but benefactors like Aristotle Onassis, John Issa, and Prince Rainier ensured she was kept in the style to which she was accustomed. Now, as the M/Y Grace, she plies the waters of the Galapagos Islands, once again the elegant hostess to carefree, adventurous, perfect parties. M/Y Grace bore many names since Santiago Soulas, an Argentinean, commissioned her in Southampton. She weighed 298 tons, was 147 feet long, with a 23-foot beam and a draft of 12 feet. Soulas kept her four years before selling her to Zarch Couyoumbian, a Greek gentleman who named her Rion. In 1938, Sir George Tilley, chairman of the Prudential Insurance Co., acquired and enjoyed her until 1939, when the British conscripted her for the war effort. The Royal Navy – well-heeled in warships – needed smaller vessels for coastal patrols and snatched yachts from the Mediterranean and the Caribbean playgrounds. Rion found herself in a Tynemouth shipyard, stripped of her furnishings and paneling. She was strengthened to carry a 12-pound quick-firing gun on the forecastle, twin 40mm Oerlikons alongside the bridge and a rack on the stern holding eight 300 lb. depth charges. The corporate crew quarters were removed and hammock-hooks were welded to the deck. The forward suite became the operations and sonar room, another suite became the radio room, and the aft suite was an ammunition magazine. On October 21, 1939, she joined the Royal Navy with a crew of 20 under the command of Lt. T. Brydon, RNVR. She and 15 other vessels patrolled the entrances to the Solent and along the Isle of Wight: calm waters with the Germans focused on the skies.

lux-rion-grace-kelly-yacht

On patrol off the Nab Tower, however, a Dornier 110 returning from a bombing raid stafed Rion. She took some damage to her superstructure but suffered no casualties. On May 26, 1940, during Operation Dynamo, Rion was dispatched to the beaches of Dunkirk to evacuate the British Expeditionary Force. She made three 39-mile runs from Dunkirk to Dover, each time delivering 300 soldiers. On her third run, a near-miss from a bomb off her starboard bow killed 14 soldiers and one sailor and left shrapnel holes in the hull. Repaired in Portsmouth, she resumed duty in the channels from Portsmouth to Southampton. Rion’s finest hour came on November 22, 1940 with a daring nighttime capture. She was patrolling south of the Isle of Wight with HMS Shemara and HMS Valera. At 2:44 a.m. radar contact was obtained 10 miles southwest. Lt. Brydon ordered pursuit and discovered a German E-boat floundering in the swells, and Rion and Shemara opened fire from astern of the boat. The Germans returned small-arms fire but surrendered when a shell from Rion hit her bridge. Rion escorted the E-Boat to the Portsmouth Harbour naval base. Rion had not finished yet: she discovered a submarine on the night of March 23, 1941, and made numerous depth charge runs, but the large oil slick seen at dawn was insufficient evidence to confirm that Rion had destroyed the U-boat. By June 3rd, Rion’s port engine had been crippled, and she was decommissioned for three months before returning to duty: stripped of armaments and refitted with three-tier bunks and a red cross painted on her sides and upper deck, she became an annex to the Royal Navy Hospital. Here she remained until the war’s end, when she was rechristened HMS Noir. On October 1945 she was decommissioned and 17 months later she arrived at her original builders—Southampton’s Camper & Nicholson—for restoration. On September 16, 1947 she was returned to Sir George Tilley. Upon Sir George’s death in 1951, Aristotle Onassis ’ charter firm acquired HMS Noir and renamed her Arion. Two years later, the yacht became property of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco as a wedding gift from Aristotle Onassis.

deo juvante yacht monaco

Over the course of the next 2 years the yacht was refitted to embark her new era as one of the most elegant and tasteful Galapagos Cruise yachts to sail the enchanted Galapagos Islands. The cabins are in the Sun Deck, the top-most deck of the yacht where one can find plenty of reclinable lounge chairs for sunbathing or for reading in the open air. The Albert Deck has 2 Master Suites and 2 Twin Suites with ocean-view windows. The captain’s bridge, the al-fresco lounge and al-fresco bar are also located on this deck. The Carolina Deck is fitted with 5 Premium Staterooms (double and twin) with ocean-view port-holes. The Monaco Deck is the main deck of the yacht with the interior dining room, the reception area and the main lounge. On the outside of this deck there are the al-fresco dining area, the stern resting area and the jacuzzi. And… A FABERGE IMPERIAL EGG EMBODIES A FABULOUS LUXURY YACHT FULL OF HISTORY: THE STANDART YACHT

MOSCOW. Last but not least, and exort ing you to read the Fabergé Eggs history in the CULTURE & MONACO WEALTHS wish to report a curiosity about fabolous luxury yachts , with the description of the Fabergé Standart Yacht Leaf Egg . The “Standart 1909” is a transparent hollowed-out rock crystal egg, mounted horizontally, with a gold band with inlaid leaves of green enamel and small diamonds marking the separation point between upper and lower halves, which bears the inscription “Standart 1909”. The surprise is a golden replica of the Imperial Yacht , the Standart Yacht, made of gold and platinum , and coated in vitreous enamel . The model rests on a carved bed of crystal representing the ocean, but can be removed from the egg.

deo juvante yacht monaco

The c5,500 ton Standart was commissioned by Tsar Alexander III in Copenhagen . It was launched in 1895 and was 116 meters long, which made it the largest yacht in the world at that time. Outfitted with ornate fixtures, including mahogany paneling, crystal chandeliers, and other amenities (including a stable with a cow to provide the imperial children with fresh milk) it was a floating palace for the Russian Imperial Family for their vacations in the Baltic Sea. The Russian Imperial Family was vacationing on the Standart during the summer of 1914, when they received the news of the aassassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, in Sarajevo, marking the start of World War I . After the Russian Revolution the ship was placed in drydock until 1936, when she was converted to a minelayer. During World War she played a significant role in the defence of Leningrad.

Quasar Expeditions Reveals Newly Renovated M/Y Grace Yacht

The 147-ft classic yacht famously hosted Grace Kelly of Monaco's honeymoon.

By Kim Ayling

Quasar Expeditions grace yacht

Following an extensive renovation, the M/Y Grace has been relaunched into the Quasar Expeditions yacht fleet and now boasts a host of new features and updated details.

The yacht ’s history is a storied one, having been originally built in 1928 by Camper & Nicholson. While she was always intended to be a luxury cruising vessel, during WWII she was conscripted by the Royal Navy, suffering serious damage during the Dunkirk evacuation efforts.

Her fortunes became more glamorous following the war, and she was eventually gifted to Grace Kelly and Price Rainier III in honor of their wedding. The couple famously honeymooned through the Mediterranean onboard the classic yacht, which then went by the name  Deo Juvante II.

When the yacht eventually came under the care of Quasar Expeditions in 2007, she was modernized, however, Grace ’s most recent renovations are far more substantial.

The refit included an extensive upgrade to her interior courtesy of Chilean designer Enrique Concha & Co. Intended to elevate the level of luxury onboard, each of the yacht’s eight staterooms has received a refresh, along with an upgraded bar, all-new coffee lounge and a newly equipped kitchen. Expanded exterior space will also give guests better views of the surrounding landscapes.

Along with the aesthetic updates, Grace ’s refit also included some technical changes: Upgraded engines, generators and propellors ensure she can travel more quickly – she has a new top speed of 15 knots – but with minimized fuel consumption.

“The goal of Grace’s renovation was to give this classic yacht a slightly more modern, but still timeless design,” said Fernando Diez, marketing director at Quasar Expeditions. “Grace Kelly is a name that no longer resonates with some of the younger generations, yet Monaco and Monte Carlo always will.

“Therefore we chose to give the yacht a more modern feel, while still maintaining many classic design elements, and using materials that are reminiscent of the surrounding islands.

The revealing of Grace ’s new features comes just in time for the upcoming season . As with prior to her refit, she will primarily travel to the Galapagos isles with two different itineraries. Running for either 8 or 15 days, both journeys are inspired by the travels of Charles Darwin himself.

As leaders in Galapagos travel , Quasar Expeditions are experts in crafting itineraries to showcase the very best of the diverse region – including areas that few can visit – with specialist naturalist guides joining each trip and the option to tailor trips for maximum wildlife encounters.

The brand’s focus on small-scale travel (M/Y Grace has space for just 16 guests) promises intimate journeys with the smallest of environmental footprint.

“Deo Juvante” motto

“With the help of God” was the expression Lambert Grimaldi (the man to whom the inhabitants of the lordships of Monaco, Menton and Roquebrune took a vow of loyalty the day after a dark plot was hatched by his mother-in-law, Pomeline Fregose, in 1458) used in his correspondence. Lambert foiled the plot and secured the fidelity of the inhabitants.

The motto is an eminent feature on the coat of arms and on coins.

Owners comments

-Our boat is a true long distance cruiser, she sails exceptionally well for a catamaran of this size especially at or below 90 degrees apparent. She’s very fast even fully reefed (we got hailed a few times by cargo ships asking if we were participating in a race!). Even downwind we manage to sail - albeit slower - very comfortably with the just the Genoa up (reefed in lighter winds and we still manage 5 knots). The engines work very well too of course, I suppose we are purists!

Her battery capacity (10x 200ah lithium batteries) is excellent. We have met a lot of Sunreef owners and crew as well as many cats 60ft and above. All of them were constantly running their generators, a few had 2 generators. Our capacity between charges is 2-3 days. On top of that, we have solar and wind generators that help offset consumption to extend time in between charges. On average we run the generator 1.5-2 hours per days and that’s mostly for convenience to run the aircon, washing machine, oven, making water. We essentially plan around using the oven and the washing machine because our battery capacity is so good. The comfort and silence at anchor is a true luxury.

We have improved performance yet all the luxuries of Sunreef, teak in the main shower room. The list goes on. We have 3 auto helms, 2 separate sets of instruments and networks for redundancy, a huge amount of commercial quality electronics (class A AIS, Furuno SSB etc.) We are a true blue water cruising yacht, upgraded to all Victron lithium and charging systems. We are cruising or at anchor 90% of the time, everything is optimized and reliable.

There are few superyachts with a history as alluring as that of the 44m/145ft classic yacht GRACE . After all, this is the yacht on which movie star Grace Kelly and her husband Prince Rainier honeymooned on in 1956. But, there is a lot more to her fairy-tale past than this, and her story continues as she welcomes aboard guests for luxury yacht charters in the far-flung  Galapagos Islands .

GRACE’s story starts back in 1928, the year in which she first hit the water. Built in the UK by Campers and Nicholsons at their Southampton yard, she was commissioned by Argentinean tycoon Santiago Soulas, who named the yacht after his daughter Monica.

Four years later, Soulas sold the yacht to Zarch Couyoumbian, a wealthy Greek gentleman who named her RION. Come 1938, she was on the market once again and, this time, she ended up in the hands of Sir George Tilley, chairman of the Prudential Insurance Co.

However, when the Second World War broke out in 1939, the British conscripted the yacht for the war effort and she joined the Royal Navy with a crew of 20 renamed as HMS Noir.

The vessel carried out a sterling service. As well as patrolling the entrances to the Solent, she received Winston Churchill, collected 300 soldiers on three runs from Dunkirk and even captured a German E-boat off the coast of the Isle of Wight.

In October 1945, she was decommissioned and 17 months later she arrived at her original builders for restoration. Two years later she was returned to Sir George Tilley.

Upon his death in 1951, she was acquired by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, owner of the iconic 99m/325ft superyacht ‘Christina O’ , and renamed ARION. Onassis then gave the yacht as a wedding gift to his friends Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly.

The royal couple honeymooned aboard the yacht, which was christened ‘Deo Juvente II’, for seven weeks along the coasts of Corsica and Sardinia . Princess Grace then used the vessel to entertain important guests of the principality on day excursions in the Mediterranean, as well as for vacations with her family.

In 1958, the superyacht was purchased by a Monaco-based businessman and re-named DASKA. Then, after changing hands several more times, she was acquired by her current owners in 2007.

Over the course of the next two years, the yacht was rebuilt from the ground up and outfitted with the latest yachting amenities while retaining the elegance and class of her 1950s heyday.

GRACE was rebuilt from the ground up and outfitted with the latest yachting amenities while retaining the elegance and class of her 1950s heyday

During the extensive refit, the original blueprint for the hull and technical areas were used, and her former looks were taken into consideration but modern materials were used to provide her with the latest requirements on safety and make her more environmentally friendly.

Re-christened superyacht GRACE in remembrance of the fifties film star, the classic yacht is now open for charter in the off-the-radar waters of the Galapagos Islands and is one of the finest offerings in the region.

When vacationing aboard most vessels in the region, travellers have to spend their time alongside other passengers in a cruise liner setup. But, it’s possible to rent GRACE for a private yacht charter . This way, charterers and their guests have the run of the entire yacht and the crew servicing their every desire.

During a charter vacation, guests can relax and socialise in a variety of deck areas. Stunning views of the region are to be had while unwinding in the upper deck’s alfresco lounge with a drink from the nearby bar in hand or while taking a dip in the spa pool, situated forward on the main deck.

Sun-lovers will love the intimate top deck sun-bathing area and, in the evening, the entire charter party can get-together for a delicious dinner in the aft deck alfresco dining area. Side decks also ensure guests are treated to 360-degree panoramas of their surroundings when cruising the archipelago.

There is even a private stern resting area with the original 1927 wheel inscribed with ‘Due Juvante’ - the name of the luxury yacht while owned by the prince and princess.

Inside, GRACE continues to wow with her Adriana Hoyos-styled interior. The highest quality materials have been brought together to retain her classic charm, and original pieces of the yacht are found throughout, bringing the heritage of this iconic yacht back to life.

On the main deck, the main salon features two sumptuous seating areas. This deck is also home to the Grace Kelly suite which, sitting in the exact same place as where the princess’s suite was in the 1950s, boasts timeless modern styling, including tailored furniture and a modern en suite.

On the upper deck, there are two master suites and two twin cabins. The accommodation is completed by two double cabins, two twin cabins and a double cabin with a single berth on the lower deck. In total, the yacht can sleep 18 guests.

Circa Marine 24m Deo Juvante

Deo Juvante: Second 24m Circa Marine hull hits the water

Circa Marine has announced that the second hull of its Circa 24m series, named Deo Juvante , has taken to the water. The 25 metre yacht will be the first in Circa Marine's yard to be fitted with a kite sail for improved performance and fuel-saving.

The New Zealand-based shipyard launched the motor yacht, which was penned by LOMOcean Design , from the Port Whangarei Marine Centre. The yacht will undergo dockside commissioning and testing ahead of official sea trials.

The second hull of the series features a 5.9 metre beam, a full walk-around flybridge and a Portuguese bridge customised to the owner’s wishes. The yacht is equipped with four guest cabins, with the ensuite master bedroom located forward at the bow.

Other design features include simplified crew access to the engine room, systems and storage areas, which is aided by a central hallway and a foredeck hatch.

The yacht will be powered by a pair of MAN D2676 LE 424 engines that are expected to provide over 500 hp each with a top speed of 13 knots. At a cruising speed of 11 knots, she boasts a range of 5,000 nautical miles.

The first hull of the series was launched in 2021. Named Mollymawk after a type of albatross specific to the southern hemisphere, she features a two-tone grey and black hull that echoes the colouring of the bird.

The Pinnacle of Chivalry: Honours, Decorations and Medals of the Principality of Monaco

Honours, Decorations and Medals of the Principality of Monaco

The highest insignia awarded by the Prince to his subjects is the Order of Saint Charles. It was part of a strategic initiative created in 1858 by Prince Charles III himself. It played an important role during his transformational reign — as he charted a path to create the modern Monaco that today we take for granted. A modern thriving economy with the Casino business and tourism as engines was underpinned by aristocracy and celebrity. A railroad link and a higher profile role on the international stage were all part of the new dynamic thrust.

Exchange of Honours: a Highly Successful Diplomatic Initiative

Exchanging membership in distinguished «Orders» with heads of state, who in those days would typically be aristocrats, was one of Charles III’s sage diplomatic initiatives — and thus on March 15, was created the Order of Saint Charles.

It served the Prince well to award honours as he started to build up relationships with powerful countries including Russia. The influential ruling Tsar of Russia, Alexander, became the first royal to receive this award, the highest state award in Monaco. So successful was this initiative that in 1877, Charles III appointed Jean Planchet to be the first diplomatic representative and Consul of Monaco in Saint Petersburg. During his mission as Consul, Jean Planchet contributed to the signing of a number of important agreements with Russia.

Honours, Decorations and Medals of the Principality of Monaco

And the tradition still continues. Two French presidents — Charles de Gaulle and Jacques Chirac — were awarded the «Order of Saint Charles». Since becoming the sovereign in 2005, Prince Albert II has awarded the Order of Saint Charles to a number of foreign presidents, including both Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande of France, Joachim Gauck of Germany, Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan as well as Ban Ki-moon, the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations. In 2013, the grant of the Order of Saint Charles was given to the current Russian head of state Vladimir Putin.

Monaco Royals, Knights of the Order of Saint Charles

Honours, Decorations and Medals of the Principality of Monaco

The sovereign prince of Monaco — currently Charles III’s great-great-great grandson, Albert II — is the Grand Master of the Order of Saint Charles, and it is awarded at his discretion. His elder sister Caroline and his wife Charlene became Dames Grand Cross of the Order in 1981 and 2012. Very few current foreign royals are members of the Order: Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy, the son of the last Italian king, and King Albert II of Belgium are among them.

There are high levels of the Order to which the royals and international heads of state belong. Regular citizens of Monaco have to start off as knights; they can move up to a new stage after a certain number of years have elapsed.

Honours, Decorations and Medals of the Principality of Monaco

Legacy of St Carlo Borromeo

The two main parts of the insignia are the badge and the star. The badge consists of a red and white Maltese cross backed by a wreath of laurel leaves; the centre of the cross features a pair of interlocking Cs surmounted by a golden crown (the monogram of Prince Charles III), surrounded by the motto of the order, «Princeps et Patria» (Latin for “prince and country”). On its reverse there is the Grimaldis’ coat of arms with the motto Deo Juvante. The colours of the ribbon are traditionally Monegasque — red and white. There are five categories of merit of the Order: Knight Grand Cross, Knight Grand Officer, Knight Commander, Knight Officer, Knight.

One might think that the Order of St Charles is named after Prince Charles III, as well as the Monte-Carlo district with its famous Casino. But actually it is named after a different Charles: St Charles Borromeo. Carlo Borromeo was a sixteenth-century archbishop of Milan, a member of both the Borromeo family and of the Medicis and he was a nephew of Pope Pius IV. Charles III chose Carlo Borromeo as his personal patron saint, naming Saint Charles Church and the highest chivalric order in the Principality after him as well.

It’s interesting to know that the nephew of the ruling Prince, Pierre Casiraghi , has married Beatrice Borromeo who is a direct descendant of St Carlo on her father’s side. The couple have two sons both having the name of their famous ancestor — Stefano Ercole Carlo and Francesco Carlo Albert.

Additional splendid Orders, Decorations And Medals Of Monaco

Three others Orders were created in the XX century during the reign of Prince Rainier III . These are:

The Order Of The Crown

Honours, Decorations and Medals of the Principality of Monaco

Created by decree on July 20, 1960. This medal is awarded to those people, who have done something exceptional or by their exceptional conduct. There are the same five categories of merit that the Order of St Charles has.

Recipients include: Princess Charlotte, Duchess of Valentinois (grandmother of Prince Albert II); Princess Benedikte of Denmark.

The Order Of Grimaldi

Honours, Decorations and Medals of the Principality of Monaco

Created by decree on November 18, 1954. This medal is to reward those people who have contributed to the prestige of the Principality with distinction. There are also the same five categories of merit.

Recipients include: Prince Albert’s youngest sister, Princess Stephanie as a Dame Grand Cross; Jacques, Heriditary Prince of Monaco, and Princess Gabriella; Mr Bernard Barsi, ex-archbishop of Monaco; writer and historian Jean des Cars.

The Order Of Cultural Merit

Honours, Decorations and Medals of the Principality of Monaco

Created by decree on December 31, 1952. This medal is to reward those people with distinction, who have participated in the arts, letters and science through their work or teaching in Monaco. Or have contributed in those areas and extended the intellectual influence of the Principality, even outside of Monaco. There are three categories of merit: Commander, Officer and Knight.

Among the Commanders are: opera singers Cecilia Bartoli, Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, Ruggero Raimondi; musician Mstislav Rostropovich; choreographer Jean-Christoph Maillot; actor Robert Hossein; couturier Pierre Cardin; painter and sculptor Sacha Sosno.

Officers: conductor James DePreist; jazz musician Markus Miller; Irina Bokova, the former Director-General of UNESCO (2009–2017).

Knights: actress Danielle Darrieux; violinist Maxim Vengerov.

There are also three medals and one decoration:

The Medal Of Honour

Created by decree on February 5th 1894. This medal is awarded for exceptional devotion to duty in the civil and military service. There are three categories of reward gold, silver and bronze. In January, 2020 Monaco’s Formula 1 racing star Charles Leclerc was presented with the Medal of Honour.

The Monaco Red Cross Medal

Honours, Decorations and Medals of the Principality of Monaco

Created by decree on October 16, 1950. It is awarded to those for their devotion and exceptional service to the Red Cross, either on a national or international level. There are three categories of merit silver gilt, silver and bronze. Princess Grace proudly wore her Red Cross honorary medal in 1959. She led the Monaco Red Cross for many years.

Citation For Exceptional Service

This award was established on April 7, 1951. This citation is awarded for exceptional service, acts of courage or for devotion to duty and exceptional service by the military in the service of the Prince. This clip is worn on top of the ribbon on the ‘medal of honour’ first category. There are four different categories of clips gold, silver gilt, silver and bronze.

The Monaco Blood Donor Medal

Honours, Decorations and Medals of the Principality of Monaco

There are three categories of merit: silver gilt (for 100 donations), silver (for 60 donations) and bronze (for 30 donations). Typically awarded during the Fête Nationale, for example to mark the 2019 Monaco National Holiday, H.S.H. Prince Albert II presented Monaco Blood Donor Medals in the Throne Room at the Prince’s Palace.

  1. Stalca & Deo Juvante II, 2 yachts for the Princess Grace of Monaco

In 1947, the 44-meter yacht was purchased by Onassis. After the wedding of Rainier and Grace, Deo Juvante II (translated «With God's help» from Latin) remained the Prince's yacht for several years. In 1958, it was sold and then changed owners several times.

  2. Stalca: Princess Grace of Monaco's family getaway yacht

The couple had already owned a yacht together, the 44.5 metre Deo Juvante II (now named Grace ), a wedding gift from Aristotle Onassis that they used for their honeymoon and later sold.
