This was the most epic trip. We took our friends and family to Catalina for an amazing day.  Captain Mark was absolutely phenomenal.  He was super fun and accommodating.  He took us around wherever we wanted to go and care of everything. He set up all the toys and made sure we had everything we wanted at all times.  The boat is gorgeous and was spotless.  This was one of the most memorable days ever.  Thank you!!!

Captain Mark and Aperitivo = Only the Best! We had a super fun full life aquatic day for the Huntington Beach Airshow with fam and friends. Yachting with Captain Mark felt more like yachting with family. Mark has a boating CV that is lifelong, outstanding professional experience with a penchant for safety. That said; it was max fun knowing we were in great hands and enjoyed the day with blue skies, blue water and a high caliber Airshow out in the ocean.  I even brought my father whom recently turned 79. He became as youthful as a teenager on full smiles out on the water with Mark showing him the ropes of yacht Aperitivo. All my friends are already calling me to make plans and get their families out on the water. Highly recommended, do not hesitate, get out and yacht; nothing but outstanding family/friends memories that will not be forgotten; thank you Mark, thank you Aperitivo 100%.

We chartered the Aperitivo for my daughter’s 15th birthday. Mark the Captain made us all feel comfortable and safe. His experience and knowledge of the ocean were very apparent. Everyone had a great time swimming, hanging out on the swim float, and paddleboarding. I had no idea how fast 4 hours could go by. • If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.

Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race Gets Underway Friday, April 26

The 76th Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race gets underway on Friday, April 26 at 11 a.m. off of the Balboa Pier. Hundreds of spectators are expected to line the Balboa Pier and nearby beaches to catch a glimpse of the boats as they set sail for Baja California.

A multitude of racers and 145 boats that keep N2E a Southern California yacht racing favorite will take to the course bound for the Hotel Coral and Marina in Ensenada.

Race organizers, the Newport Ocean Sailing Association, will be celebrating before the start as it welcomes Mike Whalen’s Ramble On, for his 50th running of the iconic yacht race. The veteran has raced on eight of his own boats and crewed for others on just as many. They have varied in size, from 30 to 44 feet, and sailed in several classes, including ORCA with a not-so-fast catamaran.

He has been sailing Ramble On, his Beneteau 44.7 for just 2 years. It will be one of the 23 Beneteaus competing. Although he won a class trophy quite some time ago, he reports that they usually finish in the middle of the fleet.

“I just enjoy the sport – really enjoy sailing and racing,” said Whalen. After replacing a main sail (sadly lost in the Cabo race) he and his Shoreline Yacht Club crew are hopeful of a better finish this year.

Three other skippers will be sailing N2E for 40 years or more. Another three have sailed for more than 30 years, while a dozen have clocked over 20 finishes.

“We’re very excited to see the fleet grow this year to over 145 boats,” said NOSA Commodore Phil Herzfeld. “It’s also exciting to see 35 first-time owners competing in both the PHRF and Cruising fleets.”

Bernt Helgaas of Wayzata, Minnesota, and his Norseman 447 Andreas is one of those excited first-timers. Helgaas bought the 1981 Norseman berthed in San Diego and has been refitting it for the past couple of years. Although made for ocean crossings, the heavy cruising boat needed a lot of TLC before it ventured outside the harbor.

Now, with new electronics, navigation systems, plumbing, and rigging, Andreas is about to start her new life as a race boat. “N2E is going to be a good shakedown for the boat and the crew,” Helgaas said. After N2E will be other long-distance races like the SoCal 300, and eventually Transpac.

Returning again and again and again in hopes of a repeat of last year’s three-trophy win is Rich Festa’s Groundhog Day. Sailing in the always-competitive maxi-class, the Rogers46 crossed the finish line at N2E 75 in 17hr 36mn 13s. They were two hours and 34 minutes faster than the closest class competitors.

The 75th race saw better-than-expected winds at the start, but dropped overnight, making for very close racing by morning’s light. Choices made by the skippers and navigators meant the difference between winning – or not – would come down to a matter of seconds in some classes.

Skippers for this year’s race are starting to track weather systems and chart expected conditions. They will be making strategic plans to maximize the wind or make the best of them.

Only one thing is for certain; N2E continues to be a competitive and fun race that offers weekend and competitive sailors the chance to sail to Mexico and back in a weekend.

NOSA and its nearly 40-person team of volunteers will present more than 30 trophies on Sunday, April 29.

The 17 sailors who chose the shorter course to San Diego will celebrate victories on Sunday at Silverlake Yacht Club.

The Newport Ocean Sailing Association, organizers of the historic Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race, was founded in 1947 to promote ocean racing off Newport Beach. The first 125-nautical mile race sailed on April 23, 1948, into the small fishing village of Ensenada, Mexico. Mrs. Denny Barr claimed the top prize for skippering Mickey, a 46-foot sloop to best overall corrected time.

With an emphasis on camaraderie and competition, the N2E quickly attracted thousands of racers, becoming an event where fun-seeking novices could race alongside celebrities and world-class sailors.

Newport City Council awards Easton’s Beach concessions contract to The Heritage Restaurant Group

During their Regular Council Meeting on Wednesday night, Newport City Council approved a one-year agreement, including three (3) additional one (1) year opinion years, with 1899, LLC. of Newport, Rhode Island (which is now doing business as The Heritage Restaurant Group), to provide mobile food and beverage concessions at Easton’s Beach.

The Director of Public Services recommended that City Council approve the contract with The Heritage Restaurant Group. The Heritage Restaurant Group will pay the City $72,000 annually and 10% of the taxable gross sales of all products at Easton’s Beach in excess of $750,000.

The Heritage Restaurant Group, owned by Nicholas Schorsch, also owns the Audrain Hospitality Group and just announced last week that it has agreed to buy the Brick Alley Pub .

In addition to The Heritage Restaurant Group, Food Fleet of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Newport Chowder Company of Newport, Rhode Island, also submitted RFPs.

The Heritage Restaurant Group will operate from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily at Easton’s Beach from May 15 to September 30, 2024.

The contract award was approved by Newport City Council in under two minutes, with a vote of 6 -1, with Council David Carlin opposing it.

Reaction from The Heritage Restaurant Group

The Heritage Restaurant Group issued the following press release the approval;

1899, LLC (now doing business as The Heritage Restaurant Group) is pleased to announce that at tonight’s Newport City Council meeting, 1899 was awarded the concessions contract for the 2024 summer season at Easton’s Beach.  1899 is a robust, multifaceted restaurant and hospitality company currently overseeing and supporting three brick-and-mortar restaurants in the City of Newport, a fleet of mobile food trucks and mobile food carts, and a state-of-the-art mobile food kitchen.

Since beginning operations in 2017, 1899 has grown exponentially with an average of 65 year-round employees, which swells to more than 200 employees during the summer season.  All of 1899’s employees, both seasonal and year-round, live in the greater Newport County area.

“When it was made public over two years ago that the City of Newport was looking for solutions to the structural issues of the Easton’s Beach pavilions, 1899 and its partners reached out to the City to offer assistance in raising private funds to repair, remediate and save the existing structures.  However, after further city-mandated feasibility studies, the City concluded that a majority of the beach structures and amenities would need to be demolished and replaced, including those providing concessions.  Like the rest of the Newport community, we knew what an impact the loss of these buildings and amenities would have on the City’s residents and summer visitors.  We pivoted to looking to bring to bear all of 1899’s resources to provide a bid that not only offered a variety of concession options to beachgoers, but also shared a greater portion of the revenue generated by the mobile food truck fleet with the City than other bidders.  In addition, 1899 will provide additional benches, tables and other accommodations to visitors at no cost to the City. 

This is not solely a business venture, but a reflection of our Company’s core values, to invest in our local Aquidneck Island community.  Newport is where we and our employees live year-round, where our children and grandchildren live and attend school, and its future health and well-being are paramount to our success.  As we have done in the past and will continue to do, we look for any opportunity to take part in public-private partnerships, like we have done with the City of Newport, and many local charities, including, but not limited to, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, the Edward King House Senior Center, the Boys and Girls Club of Newport County, Newport Out, Friends of Newport Skatepark, Newport Hospital, and Bike Newport.”  Said an 1899 representative.

The diverse 1899 hospitality platform is agile in its abilities, servicing public and private events of all types and sizes and working with a myriad of organizations including the Town of Middletown, Rhode Island, the State of Rhode Island Division of Parks and Recreation, the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the Newport Festivals Foundation, 12 Metre Yacht Club Newport Station, Salve Regina University, the Newport Art Museum, St. Michael’s Country Day School, Newport Hospital, Gold Medal Bakery and The Ocean Race.

In 2023, 1899 served as the concessioner and caterer of The Newport Stopover of The Ocean Race, one of the State’s most important events.  Through this endeavor, 1899 gained unmatched experience and expertise in operating sustainably and now employs these environmentally sensitive standards across its restaurant, catering and mobile food truck divisions.  In addition to The Ocean Race, in 2023 1899 organized a total of 729 stops for the mobile food trucks and catering kitchen at events in Newport, Middletown, Portsmouth, Jamestown, North Kingstown, East Greenwich, Bristol, Providence and East Providence, Rhode Island, Fall River, Massachusetts and Woodstock, Connecticut, to name a few.

As residents of Newport, 1899 its partners and employees recognize that Easton’s Beach and the Cliff Walk are two of the City’s most prized assets and showpieces.  In order to maintain and elevate the visitor’s Newport experience, 1899 is committed to building a broad range of food offerings and creating a culinary destination at Easton’s Beach.  To achieve this, it is 1899’s sincere desire to work with other local food truck vendors to augment the food offerings to include sweet and savory items not on 1899 menus, provided that these operators maintain and comply with the standards required and expected by the City of Newport.
