Practically speaking, however, if you are interested in cruising  the Bahamas  in conjunction with your Caribbean yacht charter, it is highly unlikely you'll be able to manage the distance during a typical 7-day charter, especially for itineraries that incorporate East Caribbean destinations such as Antigua and Saint Martin. You will need to decide which destination you prefer to spend your time in, or extend your charter vacation to incorporate both.

However, what is likely is that you will finish your yacht rental vacation in the same location that you started. For example, the majority of  British Virgin Island yacht charters will begin and end in St Thomas, while for Antigua yacht charters , it'll be the iconic English Harbour.

The best time to visit the Caribbean is generally December to April, when it's a little cooler and less humid. But the best month to visit can differ depending on the island, budget and interests you have. For example, some yacht charter guests may decide to visit May to June and late November, when weather is still fantastic but there are fewer crowds.

We advise booking your Caribbean yacht rental at least three months in advance to ensure you get the yacht you desire. The longer you leave it, the fewer choices you will have to rent in the Caribbean.

For your Caribbean superyacht charter, you will need to provide a completed charter agreement and 50% of the charter fee as a deposit. This is payable once the contract has been signed.

When booking a Caribbean yacht rental, do keep in mind the costs that aren't included in the base rate, namely VAT and the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance). The APA is usually paid in advance of the charter and is commonly set at 30% of the charter fee. This allowance covers expenses such as fuel, berthing, food and drinks, as well as any special requests.

The Caribbean high season for yacht charters runs from mid-December to early May, with Christmas and New Year’s the most popular and busiest times of the year. But due to the islands’ locations near the equator, temperatures remain ideal throughout the year, making off-season charters just as enjoyable.

The British Virgin Islands include Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda, and more. There’s no better way to experience the waters and beaches of the BVI's than on a private Caribbean charter with a full crew to pamper you. Of all the islands in the Caribbean, the Virgins are furthest north. This makes them very convenient due to the proximity to San Juan and due to their direct flights from the United States. The U.S. Virgin Islands consist mainly of the three large islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John. With lovely bays, long beaches, lush nature preserves, fabulous diving spots, and excellent, onshore evening entertainment, many choose to vacation in the USVI’s. Caribbean charters often visit both the BVI’s and USVI’s during the same week, as they are close to one another and the waters are generally calmer than in other parts of the Caribbean. The Leewards are situated in the middle of the Caribbean Island chain. The major airports are located on St. Maarten and Antigua. Due to the English, Dutch, and French influences everywhere you look, they exhibit the best example of cultural sophistication anywhere within the Caribbean. If you are looking to see where the rich and famous go on vacation, you will want to visit the island of St. Barts; for many this is a must stop for a Caribbean yacht charter. The Grenadines are also called The Windward Islands. Oftentimes our guests will choose a sailing charter over a motor yacht when in the Grenadines, due to the more constant tropical breezes that occur. The islands are much less developed than the rest of the Caribbean, and the inhabitants live on their own time schedule, which enhances the feeling of getting away. The northern most island accessible by air is ST. Vincent, while the southern tip’s major airport is on Grenada. There are fewer Caribbean charter yachts based here; however, occasionally some charter yachts are happy to relocate in order to offer a vacation that happens a little off the beaten path. Caribbean Charters - When To Go.

One of the lovely things about the Caribbean is that the temperatures remain consistent throughout the year; however, there are some other weather considerations that you will want to factor in when making your caribbean yachting vacation plans. Read More....

Vacations here are most popular between November and July.

If you are thinking of a megayacht, you will want to keep in mind that many of these private yachts which are Caribbean based in winter leave in the late spring and early summer months. They will return again in early winter; however, this does limit their availability. To charter a mega yacht, you will want to make sure that you do so well in advance.

Motor, sail, or catamaran yachts, on the other hand, often have selections available year round. Holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter do need to be planned for as early as possible as these are very popular charter times.

The availability for Caribbean charters can also be affected by the weather in other climates, for instance, when the severity of the weather is bad in the United States or Europe, especially between January and February, the charters are often booked. This is due to many clients looking for a break from the cold.

New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Caribbean sailing tips: Chris Doyle on making the most of your time there

Sailing in the Caribbean offers a seemingly endless panoply of delights. Cruising guru Chris Doyle shares some hidden gems with Erin Carey

Chris Doyle’s is a name familiar to all Caribbean cruisers, as the author of best-selling cruising guides of the region. Having explored the Caribbean for more than 40 years, there is barely an anchorage he hasn’t visited or a harbour he hasn’t surveyed. His knowledge of the eastern Caribbean is second to none, and his cruising guides can be found on the shelves and chart tables of thousands of boats.

Now in his late 70s, Doyle has no plans of slowing down. His custom-built 40ft catamaran, Ti Kanot , can be found zipping from one anchorage to the next each cruising season, and he spends half of each year aboard.

“As a cruising guide author, I sit between two places: the yachting community, and the community ashore,” he explains. “I help people get on better ashore, as well as on the navigational side of things. I find what I do very rewarding because I’m not only helping cruisers but I’m also helping the local communities.

“I do my best to visit every anchorage that we cover. There are about 60 for the book I’m doing right now. I can’t update each book each year, so I update books on alternate years.”

Only in the last two years has he hired the help of a business partner, Lexi Fisher. Fisher now covers the islands between Anguilla and Montserrat, leaving Doyle to cover the 16 islands between Antigua and Grenada. While his guides should not be used in place of navigational charts, they are an indispensable aid for yachtsmen or charterers visiting these islands and provide practical and up to date advice.

Doyle confesses that he doesn’t work in any logical order – yet it works for him. He rides around on his bicycle and takes notes by hand, just as he has always done. His small desk, located in an aft cabin of Ti Kanot , was buried in paper and hand-scribed records.

Doyle tries to visit each and every business in his guides, and enjoys the interaction. From laundry services to chandleries, sail lofts to refrigeration mechanics, Doyle provides his readers with everything they need to make their stay as enjoyable as possible. He also visits every customs and immigration office along the way to ensure his guides contain the latest fees and legal requirements for entry into each country.

Doyle knows the waters surrounding each island so well; he barely has to refer to charts. After all, he surveyed many of the popular anchorages with a lead line before the acquisition of his Humminbird Helix 5 echo sounder, which revolutionised the way he now works.

By drawing his own charts for the guides, Doyle provides the knowledge and advice needed to make safe entry into many anchorages that would otherwise be difficult. Having originally produced colour sketch charts by hand, Doyle has now computerised the process. His guides also provide GPS waypoints, star charts, fishing information, local customs and information on major sailing events.

He tells me he feels lucky skippers still buy guides, despite a wealth of information on social media and the availability of cheap digital charts. “Social media can sometimes be spot on, and very up to date. But it is hard to beat the reliability of professionals who have been at it for years noting every change along the way.

“For example, there was an area off Canouan that was charted as being 20ft but there was one row of rocks that was at 15ft and a superyacht ripped off its keel there, so I took a diver along and paid close attention to that area.”

A keen photographer, Doyle also takes all of the aerial photographs himself. In the days before drones, this would involve commissioning a helicopter to fly over the islands, Doyle hanging out the door to capture the perfect angle. Today he has become a proficient drone pilot.

Besides such advances in technology over the 40 years his books have been in production, Doyle’s readership has also changed substantially. Although his audience was originally mostly charter sailors, he now caters to bluewater cruisers and superyachts.

Doyle also runs a comprehensive website where he records details and information that simply won’t fit in his books. “If I included everything I knew about the islands, my books would need wheels,” he laughed.

Personal favourites

As an expert on the eastern Caribbean, what are Chris Doyle’s own island recommendations? Like a father with several children, Doyle finds it hard to narrow down his favourite.

Doyle’s catamaran Ti Kanot

“I love everywhere, it’s the truth. I am very comfortable in some places, I guess because they are so familiar. I am a resident of Grenada and have spent a lot of time there. The people are very nice, and the island is lovely with waterfalls, lovely hikes in agricultural land and rainforest; there is a lot to see and do.

“St Vincent and the Grenadines is a delightful archipelago, very popular with cruisers. We all love Bequia, it’s a charming little island with a great atmosphere.

“Dominica is a favourite because of its natural beauty, and despite being devastated by hurricane Maria in 2017, they are rebuilding, and they absolutely love having cruisers visit the island,” he remarked. He adds that Martinique and Guadeloupe are delightful with their distinctive French flavour, large islands with rainforests, beaches and many lovely bays.

But what of the hidden gems, the islands that cruisers often skip right by? Doyle cites Barbuda, an island 30 miles north of Antigua, as a destination not to be missed for its pink, secluded beaches, clear aqua water and thriving Frigate bird colony.

“It’s the last sizeable inhabited island that has hardly changed since I visited it 45 years ago, and I suspect it has not changed a lot going back further still. People live simply, and it’s the only island in the Eastern Caribbean that has a really rich mangrove lagoon.

“Barbudans reluctantly entered into independence with Antigua. They have always maintained the land is theirs to hold and look after communally, and it is one of the few places in the Caribbean that has adhered to the concept of communal rather than private ownership (the Carib territory in Dominica is another). Since the beach-rich real estate is valuable, governments in Antigua have often coveted it. Hurricane Irma gave them an opportunity to push that agenda.

“Barbudans have taken the matter to court, and it is not the first time. I wish them well as they have been excellent environmental stewards of a unique island, since the times of slavery, and any major change will end Barbuda as we have known it. It’s also the only island that leaves me with a palpable feeling of loss when I sail away.”

Known as the ‘nature island’ Dominica defies the Caribbean cliché on many levels. With a distinct lack of white sandy beaches, luxury resorts and mass tourism, the island lures eco-adventurers and those who appreciate nature with its Boiling Lake, rainforest-shrouded volcano, Champagne Reef and sulphurous hot waterfalls and springs.

“It is physically the most dramatic of islands with steep mountains that have limited development, and the saying is that if Columbus returned today, it is the only island he would recognise,” Doyle says. “Dominicans have embraced the image and created the Waitukubuli trail, the first long distance trail in the eastern Caribbean, that runs from one end of the island to the other. It would take a week or more to do the whole trail, but it crosses a few roads, so it is easy to take a break.

“The northern anchorage off Portsmouth in Prince Rupert Bay is a favourite with cruisers, as local guides have welcomed them very warmly and look after everything they need, from security to laundry, under a group called PAYS.”

Saba, an island in the north-eastern Caribbean some 28 miles due south of St Maarten, and the fellow Dutch island of St Eustatius, are Doyle’s other lesser known recommendations. They are both very small, and their anchorages are weather dependent.

Saba is an imposing island like no other in the eastern Caribbean. It rises from the ocean, its rock faces scarred from falling boulders, with a brown exterior void of any beaches, yet its lush interior is mountainous and green. Hiking up Saba’s active volcano, Mount Scenery, is a must-do according to Doyle. The island in the clouds falls almost as dramatically under the water as it rises above, creating some of the most fantastic diving grounds in the Caribbean.

St Eustatius is a small island with a tremendous history. “They welcome visitors with genuine warmth, and it’s so far off the beaten track that the very few visitors you meet are likely to be interesting,” he keenly remarked. “Hiking the Quill volcano is fun and, to put the icing on the cake, the scuba diving is impressive, and there is a selection of enjoyable restaurants.”

Other less visited islands Doyle recommends include Montserrat. “Montserrat is the only island in the eastern Caribbean with a volcano that has been continuously active since it erupted in 1995. It is off the beaten track as the anchorage is fairly exposed and weather dependent, but a view of the town buried in ash and the view of the volcano from the observatory are amazing.”

Other areas that are becoming more popular include the Saintes and Marie Galante part of Guadeloupe. “They are dry, sunny, and picturesque. The Saintes is a small archipelago with several tiny islands; Marie Galante is larger and very rural with fields of sugar cane. Many day tourists visit, and they are deservedly popular with yachts, so not exactly off the beaten track.

Things to consider

Besides using his guides. Doyle strongly advises that any visiting sailors spend time familiarising themselves with the local weather, which is generally very reliable out of the hurricane season. Winds are nearly always in the easterly quadrant between 5-25 knots.

The stronger winds are called Christmas winds and often happen December to February. Swells are a factor that need to be watched, especially in remote islands like Barbuda, Saba and Statia, where anchorages can become dangerous. Several forecasting websites like Wind Guru offer a ten-day prediction.

“They should also be aware of the fact that the Caribbean is not cheap, though you can live simply without spending too much. Breadfruit and coconuts are abundant,” Doyle adds. “Security is another issue people need to consider. It is still pretty safe. The Caribbean Safety and Security Net (CSSN) details all the reports sent to them and gives an overview of what is happening.

“For many years I slept with hatches wide open and never gave it a thought. With the advent of social media and warnings, I thought about it, and decided the risk of something happening was probably equivalent to having a fire on board, and as I had a fire extinguisher I also installed an alarm. It has never gone off, and neither has the fire extinguisher. But I hoist my dinghy at night and lock it onto a dock.”

While cruisers will need at least one season to cover most of the eastern Caribbean, those on a charter will often have no more than a week or two. Doyle advises: “Don’t try to do too much and try to arrange with the charter company to sail one way if you can.

Wherever you go, Doyle’s advice is simple: “Get out, get ashore, hike, climb, take buses, talk to the locals and get involved. Stay until you’re not enjoying it as much as you should be and then move on, but don’t rush!”

Plan your arrival times so you don’t have to pay overtime. In general, customs and immigration charge overtime if vessels arrive after hours or on weekends. Depending on the country, some overtime fees can cost more than actually checking into the country.

The French islands are the cheapest countries to check into. Martinique, Guadeloupe, St Maarten and St Barts cost no more than a euro or two to enter the country and the process can be carried out by the cruiser on a computer, generally found in a café or shop.

Martinique is the best island for provisions. With a vast range or French cheeses, wines and other delicacies, cruisers can stock their boat for months, saving money when travelling to more expensive islands such as Antigua, St Barts and Saba.

Grenada charges prison escapees with murder of American couple missing since alleged yacht hijacking

T hree inmates who escaped from prison in Grenada have been charged with killing two Americans after allegedly hijacking their yacht last month to flee to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, police said Thursday.

The Royal Granada Police Force said in a statement  that Ron Mitchell, Atiba Stanisclaus and Trevon Robertson were each charged with two counts of capital murder over the presumed deaths of Americans Ralph Hendry and Kathleen Brandel.

The three suspects have also been charged with escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and kidnapping. Stanislaus was separately charged with one count of rape.

The latest police update did not make clear who Stanislaus is accused of raping and did not provide information on whether the bodies of the couple had been recovered.

Hendry and Brandel, based in Virginia, were living out a long-held dream of cruising the Caribbean in their sailing yacht called Simplicity, to Antigua when they went missing, according to their  yacht club, the Salty Dawg Sailing Association.

Their vessel was found abandoned in neighboring St. Vincent and the Grenadines on February 21, with the husband and wife nowhere to be found, the yacht club said.

Authorities in Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines launched joint investigations to track down the suspects who allegedly left behind a violent scene on the missing couple’s yacht, including blood stains.

Last week, Grenada police commissioner Don McKenzie said in a news conference the couple was likely thrown overboard during the hijacking, and information suggests the escapees “disposed of the occupants” while traveling between Grenada and St. Vincent, about 80 miles away.

Their alleged killers committed “several criminal acts including bodily harm to the couple” while sailing, the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force said last week. When authorities eventually recovered the yacht, the scene was “consistent with signs of violence,” the police force said.

All three suspects made their first court appearance in St. George’s Magistrate’s Court in Grenada on Thursday and were remanded to prison. They are due back in court on March 27.

CNN has reached out to the police for more information.

‘They brought light’

The couple’s disappearance has left family and loved ones reeling.

Hendry’s son, Bryan Hendry, and Brandel’s son, Nick Buro, released a joint statement last month, remembering their parents for living with love, faith and sailing.

“Ralph and Kathy lived a life that most of us can only dream of, sailing the eastern coast of the United States, living on their home Simplicity, making friends with everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family – that’s who Ralph and Kathy were and that’s how they will be remembered in our hearts,” the statement read.

“If we have learned anything from this tragic event, it’s that we know they left this world in a better place than it was before they were born.”

Buro and Bryan Hendry called their parents the strongest people they will ever know, saying they “strive to be even half as wonderful as them.”

“While the end of their life may have been dark, they brought light, and that light will never be extinguished from the hearts and minds of the people who knew, loved and cared so deeply about them,” the statement read.

Buro said his mother and stepfather were veteran boaters who had been planning the trip – their first cruise of the Caribbean – for years.

“They were super careful to be safe all the time,” Buro said. “Everywhere they went everything they did, safety was their top, top concern. So this unfortunate accident, I think, it came out of nowhere for them.”

The couple sold their home and bought Simplicity years ago, throwing themselves into an enthralling life on the water, he said.

“It was their home. Everything they had, they owned, was on that boat. It was their life,” he said. “Kathy worked her whole life and then retired. Ralph worked in financial services and continued to work from the boat. But really what they did was … choose a lifestyle that most of us would never imagine could be done. And they loved every minute of it and they saw many parts of the world and just lived a life of joy and love.”

Three men charged with murder in deaths of US couple who disappeared in Caribbean

Ralph Hendry, 66, and Kathleen Brandel, 71, had been cruising the eastern Caribbean when their catamaran was hijacked

Three men who had escaped from prison have been charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of an American couple who disappeared in the Caribbean in February after their catamaran was hijacked.

The Royal Grenada Police Force announced on Friday that Trevon Robertson, 23; Atiba Stanislaus, 25; and Ron Mitchell, 30, were re-arrested on two counts of capital murder in the slayings of Ralph Hendry and Kathleen Brandel.

Grenada police added that the trio have also been charged with escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and two counts of kidnapping. Additionally, Stanislaus was charged with one count of rape, police said.

The three men made their first court appearance on Thursday and were remanded to Richmond Hill prison, also known as His Majesty’s prison. Their next court appearance has been scheduled for 27 March.

According to Grenada police commissioner Don McKenzie, the three men escaped from the South Saint George police station on 18 February and the following day hijacked the catamaran Simplicity, belonging to Hendry, 66, and Brandel, 71.

The men then made their way to St Vincent and the Grenadines, where they were arrested on 21 February, police said.

“Information suggests that while traveling between Grenada and St Vincent, they disposed of the occupants,” McKenzie said.

According to the non-profit Salty Dawg Sailing Association, Hendry and Brandel were “veteran cruisers and longtime members”. The organization added that the couple sailed Simplicity in the 2023 Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua and had been spending the winter cruising the eastern Caribbean.

Describing their parents, Hendry’s son Bryan and Brandel’s son Nick Buro said: “Ralph and Kathy lived a life that most of us can only dream of, sailing the eastern coast of the United States, living on their home Simplicity, making friends with everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family – that’s who Ralph and Kathy were and that’s how they will be remembered in our hearts.”

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas cruise ship rescued 14 people adrift in the sea

The crew of what is considered the world's largest cruise ship  rescued 14 people clinging to a small boat adrift on the ocean, authorities said.

Passengers aboard the Icon of the Seas  captured video of the crew using a small vessel to ferry the group to the safety of the cruise ship on Sunday. The cruise had begun in Miami, and the ship was headed for Honduras when the rescue happened, passengers said.

The cruise ship encountered the small vessel "adrift and in need of assistance," Miami-based Royal Caribbean said in a statement to The Associated Press on Thursday.

"The ship's crew immediately launched a rescue operation, safely bringing 14 people on board," the company said. "The crew provided them with medical attention, and is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard."

The crew broadcast "Code Oscar, Code Oscar, Code Oscar," over the loudspeakers around 3 p.m., Alessandra Amodio said in a report on FoxWeather.com .

Amodio said she watched as people on the tiny craft waved a large white flag.

"The boat turned around, and we pulled up as close as we could to them and stopped," Amodio said. The cruise ship then launched "a small zodiac-type rescue boat to investigate."

After the rescue, Amodio said the cruise ship's captain announced that the crew had rescued 14 people stranded at sea for eight days.

The Icon of the Seas is considered by cruise industry experts to be the largest cruise ship in the world at the moment. It can host 5,610 guests and 2,350 crew members. The ship has 2,850 staterooms, 18 guest decks and seven swimming pools.

'We could see in the waves a tiny boat," passenger Alessandra Amodio tells PEOPLE of the incident that happened aboard the Icon of the Seas on Sunday

A cruise ship’s voyage to Mexico and the Bahamas turned into a rescue mission when the boat spotted a small vessel in the waves.

On Sunday, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas , the new world's largest cruise ship that launched in January, rescued 14 people who had been stranded at sea for over a week.

Icon passenger Alessandra Amodio told PEOPLE that the cruise ship was in the midst of an eight-day Caribbean itinerary when they spotted the individuals.

"I was in the lunch buffet with my family when we heard a coded announcement over the loud speakers," Amodio told PEOPLE, adding that the announcement came at around 3 p.m. local time. "A few minutes later people started gathering at the windows and then the captain came on and announced that they had found a distressed vessel and we would be turning around to investigate. We all rushed to the windows and in the nearish distance we could see in the waves a tiny boat waving either a large white flag or sheet."

Shortly after, the ship turned around and pulled up next to the boat and "deployed a small zodiac-type rescue boat," she recalls.

"Eventually we saw Royal Caribbean crew helping about two people from the distressed boat onto the rescue boat before returning to the vessel. They then made a few more trips to safely bring everyone on board."

According to Amodio, they later found out that the passengers on the small boat had been "lost at sea for eight days."

"We got a final announcement once they were all on board safely telling us there was 14 people on board," she said, adding that passengers clapped and cheered upon hearing everyone had been rescued safely.

"Our first reaction was shock, I’ve been on six or so cruises and I’ve never experienced anything even close to this," Amodio continued. "During the rescue everyone was more shocked and the general consensus was that this wasn’t something anyone ever thought would be happening. It was crazy to see, even knowing where they were in the water, once they dropped the flag, they were hard to spot. Just seeing this small boat you knew was filled with people surrounded by the vastness of the water was enough to freak you out. "

The ship was on its first full day of sailing and it was between Cozumel, Mexico and western Cuba when the incident happened.

"We weren’t told by the captain or crew what happened to them," Amodio added of the rescued individuals.  

The cruise liner, which departed from Miami, Florida, was headed to Roatán, Honduras, and Royal Caribbean's private Bahamian island, CocoCay, during its voyage.

Royal Caribbean told PEOPLE in a statement, "On March 3, 2024, Icon of the Seas encountered a small vessel adrift and in need of assistance. The ship's crew immediately launched a rescue operation, safely bringing 14 people onboard. The crew provided them with medical attention, and is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard."

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson told Newsweek that the rescue occurred in Mexico's search-and-rescue area of responsibility.

The Icon of the Seas made its maiden voyage out of South Florida in late January. The ship departed from Port Miami and docked at ports including Puerto Costa Maya in Mexico, Basseterre in St. Kitts & Nevis and Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas.

Along with the world’s largest pool and water park at sea, Icon also boasts eight "neighborhoods" to explore and an open-air "Central Park."

The record-breaking vessel overtook Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas , which formerly held the title of largest cruise ship in the world.

This was the scene from the lunch buffet during the first full day of cruising for the Icon of the Seas. The crew rescued all 14 from the distressed boat which was dwarfed by the largest cruise ship in the world.

The largest cruise ship in the world rescued 14 people Sunday who had been stranded on a small boat for eight days.

Alessandra Amodio was traveling on Royal Caribbeans's Icon of the Seas with her family when the rescue happened.

"We were really surprised and honestly a little freaked out," Amodio said. "We’ve been on a handful of cruises and never seen something like this happen. It was crazy to think that these people were stuck at sea for so long, and we were all on board excited and relieved that the ship was able to rescue them."

The largest cruise ship in the world has 20 decks, 2,800 guest cabins, holds 2,350 crew, seven pools and a water park.

She watched the small boat from the windows of the lunch buffet. People on the tiny craft were waving a large white flag.

"The boat turned around, and we pulled up as close as we could to them and stopped," Amodio said. "RCC (Royal Caribbean) deployed a small zodiac-type rescue boat to investigate."

As you can imagine, turning around the largest cruise ship in the world takes quite a while. Getting near a small boat without swamping it in the ship's wake takes careful skill. The detour and rescue took about two hours, according to Amodio.

"Everyone around us was watching from the windows with us and just talking about how this isn’t something we ever thought to experience, and we hoped everyone on board was OK," she said. "But never were we afraid for ourselves."

She described the boat as a small dot in the vastness of the sea.

Royal Caribbean didn't provide much information about the rescue.

"On March 3, 2024,  Icon of the Seas  encountered a small vessel adrift and in need of assistance," the company said in a statement. "The ship’s crew immediately launched a rescue operation, safely bringing 14 people onboard. The crew provided them with medical attention , and is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard."

Amodio said the crew had to take several trips to the small boat to rescue everyone.

This was the ship's first full day of cruising. The eight-day vacation started in Miami and the ship was headed for Honduras. Amodio estimated from a map that the Icon of the Seas was between Cozumel, Mexico and western Cuba.

Captain's legal responsibility to aid boaters in distress

According to Amodio, the crew broadcast "Code Oscar, Code Oscar, Code Oscar," over the loudspeakers, about 3 p.m.

"Then shortly after, the captain came back on the speaker and announced they spotted a distressed vessel, and they were going to turn us around and investigate," she said. 

Amodio said that after the rescue, the captain announced that the crew had rescued 14 people stranded at sea for eight days. The captain said he didn't know what country they came from.

All the rescued people left the ship the next day while docked in Roatan, Honduras, she said.

According to maritime law, a ship and crew have a legal and moral obligation to help save human life.

"A master of a ship at sea, which is in a position to be able to provide assistance on receiving a signal from any source that persons are in distress at sea, is bound to proceed with all speed to their assistance," stated the International Maritime Organization .

Code Oscar is unique to Royal Caribbean, according to Marine Insight . The emergency code is usually used when a person falls overboard. Captains use the signal instead of shouting orders to "prevent the potentiality of chaos."

MIAMI (AP) — The crew of what is considered the world’s largest cruise ship rescued 14 people clinging to a small boat adrift on the ocean, authorities said.

Passengers aboard the Icon of the Seas captured video of the crew using a small vessel to ferry the group to the safety of the cruise ship on Sunday. The cruise had begun in Miami, and the ship was headed for Honduras when the rescue happened, passengers said.

The cruise ship encountered the small vessel “adrift and in need of assistance,” Miami-based Royal Caribbean said in a statement to The Associated Press on Thursday.

“The ship’s crew immediately launched a rescue operation, safely bringing 14 people on board,” the company said. “The crew provided them with medical attention, and is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard.”

The crew broadcast “Code Oscar, Code Oscar, Code Oscar,” over the loudspeakers around 3 p.m., Alessandra Amodio said in a report on FoxWeather.com .

Amodio said she watched as people on the tiny craft waved a large white flag.

“The boat turned around, and we pulled up as close as we could to them and stopped,” Amodio said. The cruise ship then launched “a small zodiac-type rescue boat to investigate.”

After the rescue, Amodio said the cruise ship’s captain announced that the crew had rescued 14 people stranded at sea for eight days.

The Icon of the Seas is considered by cruise industry experts to be the largest cruise ship in the world at the moment, the Miami Herald reported . It can host 5,610 guests and 2,350 crew members. The ship has 2,850 staterooms, 18 guest decks and seven swimming pools.
