Photos: BFRS Respond To St. David’s Boat Blaze

[Updated] The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service [BFRS] and police responded to a reported boat fire last night [Dec 6] in St. David’s.

Fire fighters fought the blaze from a dock before two boats arrived to assist, allowing the fire fighters to access the craft which was fully engulfed with flames and some distance away from land.

BFRS spokesperson Staff Officer Scott Quinn said, “On Friday December 6th 2019 at 11:12pm the BFRS responded to a call of a boat on fire at Chapel of Ease Road St David’s.

“On arrival Sgt Kingsley Mundy reported a 32-36 foot vessel full engulfed in flames. Due to the boat being moored approximately 40 feet off shore, private boats were required to get the fire fighters close enough to the boat to extinguish the fire.

“The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.”

Update December 10, 11.25am: A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “Friday 6th December, 11:18pm – Bermuda Radio were informed of a fire onboard a boat on its mooring to the South of Smith’s Island in St David’s.

“The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service attempted to fight the fire from ashore however the boat which was later identified as the 35ft P/C Unforgettable was soon engulfed in flames and burnt to the waterline before sinking.

“The owners arrived on scene during the incident and were not aware of anyone onboard so further rescue efforts were suspended.”

I am intrigued as to why private boats had to help – surely that exposes them to risk and poses the question: why didn’t the police boats help?

Because this is Bermuda and Bermudians help other people when they can.

Meet the Below Deck season 10 cast: who's who in the Bravo series

It's time to meet the cast of the superyacht St. David.

It's time to set sail on the largest boat in Below Deck history! Below Deck season 10 features the massive 197-foot superyacht St. David with Captain Lee, the "Stud of the Sea" at the helm. 

In the 10th season of the beloved Bravo franchise, the St. David calls the port of St. Lucia home. Captain Lee has two familiar faces with him this season in Chef Rachel Hargrove and Chief Stew Fraser Olender. Together they'll navigate a new crew.

Bravo has provided brief bios for the returning crew members as well as the newcomers. So let's get to know the cast of Below Deck season 10!

Captain Lee Rosbach

"Captain Harold Lee Rosbach has spent more than three decades in the yachting industry. Born and raised in landlocked Michigan, he discovered his untapped love for the water while managing restaurants in Turks & Caicos. It was then that an acquaintance invited him to serve as a mate on a sailboat delivery to earn extra cash. At 35, Lee obtained his captain's license and left the restaurant business behind to pursue his newfound passion. Since then, the Running Against The Tide author has commanded more than a dozen super yachts. Lovingly known as the 'Stud of the Sea,' Lee values the special bonds he forms on deck and always puts the safety of everyone on board above all else. Lee is excited to return to the Caribbean this season with familiar faces Chef Rachel Hargrove and Chief Stew Fraser Olender as he adjusts to new super yacht, St. David."

Rachel Hargrove, chef

"Originally from Tampa, Fla., Rachel Hargrove is a cosmopolitan yacht chef with an extensive repertoire of culinary skills. Although predominantly self-taught, Rachel attended the Culinary Institute of America and held an apprenticeship at the Michelin-starred restaurant Quatro Passi in Nerano, Italy. After spending time in Thailand, Japan, India and Italy to expand her craft, Rachel revels in her wide range of cuisines — from molecular gastronomy to gluten-free pasta, she is unphased by almost any charter guest preference sheet. A talented and experienced chef, Rachel admits her demanding professionalism can be polarizing to others. No matter their opinion, Rachel is always sure to stand her ground on deck."

Fraser Olender, chief stew 

"With a passion for luxury hospitality and travel, it was a no-brainer for Fraser to join the yachting industry four years ago. He got his start on a motor yacht in Naples, Italy, and has never looked back. Prior to yachting, Fraser worked in commercial bookings for leading model agencies in London. In the off-season, he loves to travel to picturesque destinations, staying at the world's finest hotels with the dream to one day open his own. Returning to the Caribbean to work under Captain Lee again, Fraser is thrilled to be chief stew on St. David. However, when the charter guests get too demanding, he must prove his worth as a department lead."

Ross McHarg, bosun 

"Leading the deck team this season is Bosun Ross McHarg. Originally from the UK, the British yachtie has spent the last 15 years living all over the world. Most recently, his travels have landed him in Asia, where he has set up base. Twelve years ago, Ross found yachting through teaching ski seasons in Europe and abandoned the snow for the sand without a second thought. With his love of travel and meeting new people, yachting was the perfect career move. A seasoned bosun, Ross brings experience and wisdom to his team, but his flirty ways get him in hot water with the crew."

Luis Antonio 'Tony' Duarte, deckhand 

"Originally from Costa Rica, deckhand Luis Antonio 'Tony' Duarte is no stranger to the seas. An adrenaline junkie, Tony has experience as a dive master in South Africa, whale-watching guide in Costa Rica and a zip-liner in the Bahamas. When he's not working in beautiful, remote locations, Tony enjoys surfing, fishing and cliff jumping. A man of nomadic nature with a passion for travel, Tony adventures from place to place but is looking forward to calling St. David his home for the charter season. With prior experience on smaller boats, Tony welcomes the challenge aboard his first super yacht." 

Ben Willoughby, deckhand 

"Born and raised on the Gold Coast of Australia, deckhand Ben Willoughby is a self-described 'ocean child at heart.' Inspired by a childhood friend's yachtie lifestyle, Ben first took to the high seas in 2020 when he joined a mega yacht crew in France. Combining his passion for fitness with his love of the water, Ben has worked as both a deckhand and personal trainer on yachts for the past three years. A social guy who firmly believes 'a Pina Colada is always a good decision,' Ben is eager to bring the party onboard. This thrill-seeking Aussie is determined to stand out on the deck of the St. David."

Hayley De Sola Pinto, stew 

"Hailing from Cornwall, England, charismatic new stew Hayley De Sola Pinto is excited to cruise the Caribbean waters. During most of the year, Hayley is an advanced aesthetics practitioner for her self-built business Classen Aesthetics. Her love of travel and meeting new people has led her to work on and off yachts since she was 23. With her humor and empathetic personality, Hayley specializes in making charter guests feel welcome and at home on St. David. However, her admittedly loud and over-the-top personality often gets her into the mix of drama onboard."

Katie Glaser, deckhand 

"Deckhand Katie Glaser first fell in love with the glamorous and fast-paced yachting industry when she moved from Colorado to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Since starting her boating career as a stew three years ago, Katie has built an extensive resume as a deckhand and first mate on a variety of yachts. While Katie has worked in different corporate fields, including IT recruiting, account management and beverage sales, she has always had an affinity for the service industry. Katie spends nearly as much time in the water as she does on it, being a fan of snorkeling, wakeboarding and swimming. Always up for an adventure, this extroverted yachtie is eager to prove she has what it takes."

Alissa Humber, stew 

"A born and bred Floridian, Alissa Humber found herself diving headfirst into yachting just over two years ago. Now residing in Miami, Alissa spends her time working as a stew on temporary yacht jobs. During the off season, Alissa loves to shop and is enamored by the gorgeous, colorful fashion in her city. She also embraces nature and enjoys kayaking or hiking in the Sunshine State. Working as a stew aboard St. David, Alissa prides herself on pleasing the charter guests and ensuring they have the best time onboard. However, when conflict emerges between her and another stew, tensions rise amongst the entire crew."

Camille Lamb, deckhand/stew 

"Coming from a family of merchant mariners, boating has always been in Camille’s blood. With sailing experience since she was 9, Camille is a natural-born yachtie with a love for the water, the beach and traveling. An avid singer and songwriter as well, Camille competed on American Idol last year. Upon her elimination, Camille found herself lost and returned to her roots on the water. With just her sailing experience from childhood, Camille secured a position on a day-charter yacht in the Virgin Islands. Since then, Camille has had more formal yachting training under her belt with work experience in Miami and Los Angeles. Camille joins St. David this season working both on deck and inside the yacht as a deck/stew, but when she's split between the two departments, she loses motivation on board."

Below Deck season 10 airs on Mondays on Bravo, with new episodes streaming on Peacock the next day in the US and on Hayu in the UK.

Sarabeth joined the What to Watch team in May 2022. Why Captain Sandy Yawn Fired Alissa Humber On Below Deck

Season 10 of "Below Deck" was rife with drama, but the feud between the second stew Alissa Humber and deck-stew Camille Lamb  ended up costing each of them their jobs. "Below Deck Mediterranean" lead Captain Sandy Yawn — who was filling in for series regular Captain Lee at the time — explained her shocking decision to terminate both interior team members to better the rest of the crew.

From the second the St. David luxury yacht set sail for this charter season, coworkers Humber and Lamb's personalities did not mesh. In an interview with Showbiz CheatSheet , the deck-stew admitted that her problems with her direct boss, Humber, stemmed from the fact Lamb "doesn't like when people tell [her] what to do when [she] was going to do it anyway." So, basically, exactly what the second stew's job is. The season-long feud culminated with the two crew members arguing and exchanging shouts in earshot of the yacht's guests, which Captain Yawn deemed "unacceptable."

After the shouting match, Yawn decided to fire Lamb in Episode 9 , as it seemed like she was the source of the dispute. But why did the Captain fire Humber just a couple of charters later?

Captain Sandy Yawn deemed Alissa Humber 'insubordinate'

At first, Captain Sandy Yawn thought it would be smooth sailing following the termination of deck-stew Camille Lamb, but this certainly would not be the case. The Season 10 "Below Deck" cameras caught the head of the vessel overhearing Alissa Humber gossiping about her through the yacht's "thin walls." But the straw that broke the camel's back wound up an entirely different situation. When Humber and fellow stew Hayley De Sola Pinto were sunbathing while their other coworker was still working, Captain Yawn thought it was inappropriate for them to be relaxing instead of helping their teammate. While Yawn chastised Humber for her attitude, the second stew misspoke and called the captain just "Sandy" instead of her proper title.

"Alissa, when you said 'Yes Sandy, I mean Captain,' that was the f**k you in my face," the captain explained during the episode (via Bravo ). "No matter what job you work in, respect for hierarchy is a must."

Citing "insubordination" and "malicious gossip," Captain Yawn kicked another stew to the dock. Humber later said she felt she was the "scapegoat" for the crew's issues.

Alissa and the crew have had time to reflect

With time to process the drama that took place on the St. David yacht, it seems that Alissa Humber is reassessing her and her crew mates' actions on the boat. During a February episode of "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen," the seasoned stew expressed regret over using the word "b***h" to describe Captain Sandy Yawn. But on the other hand, she admitted in a February interview with E! News that she "never got a good feel for Sandy."

"When the Camille and me situation was going on," Humber explained to the publication. "I felt like she really got down to Camille's level and talked with her, sat with her, ate with her, had comfortable conversations with her. ... When I tried to reach out to Sandy, I was actually shut down and my worries were dismissed."

In the end, it looks like everyone has moved on from the situation, with Humber even telling E! News that she and Camille Lamb have chatted "a few times" and are on "good terms." Even chief stew Fraser Olender acknowledged to Bravo that the Lamb versus Humber drama was "childish" in retrospect.

Awarded ‘Best Charter Yacht’ by Robb Report, St David is innovatively styled both inside and out, and showcases a study of artisan craftsmanship in every respect.

Launched by Benetti Shipyard, and designed internally by Andrew Winch, the splendid custom-made 60-meter motor yacht St David was refitted in 2019 to achieve one sole purpose: to create the absolute pinnacle of contemporary charter excellence.

Her opulent interior sleeps up to 12 guests in 6 staterooms that incorporate a magnificent master suite, full-beam VIP stateroom and 4 very spacious double rooms, all convertible to twin. Split over two levels with a raised bedroom for ultimate privacy and luxury, the master suite features a stunning staircase, sumptuous lounge area, ensuite and panoramic views that provide a truly unforgettable experience.

Throughout her interior, living spaces are finished to the highest standards, evident in her beautiful mosaic floors, sculptured tables that rise and fall, and detailed marquetry. The Italian Riviera-style creates a lavish atmosphere on board, featuring a floating staircase which spans three decks, topped by a skylight and peeking into the bottom of the sundeck pool.

Outside, on the upper deck is an oversized jacuzzi as well as a fabulous circulate dining table for 12 guests and an adjacent bar. Dining on the deck below offers an alternative experience with an indoor-outdoor circular table.

St. David boasts an extensive range of water sports equipment. Whether you are watching movies under the stars at the yacht’s outdoor cinema, exercising in the gym, enjoying a massage or partying in her private nightclub, St.David offers a charter experience like no other.

The ‘St David’ is a 196.85ft 60-meter  custom motor yacht built in 2008 by Benetti and last refitted in 2012. Andrew Winch is responsible for her beautiful exterior and interior design. The vessel was previously named St Ekaterina.

The interior layout sleeps up to 12 guests across 6 rooms, including a master suite, 1 VIP stateroom. She is also capable of carrying up to 14 crew members onboard, providing all with a distinctive, stylish charter experience.

There are a number of unique features on the St David, including a split-level master suite that offers guests with panoramic views. The whole yacht has stunning mosaic floors, and the whole layout provides flexible accommodation for all.

St David offers spa and massage facilities to add a real taste of luxury and an outdoor cinema and private nightclub make this the perfect party yacht for entertaining.

St David has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, and is built to comply with both MCA and Lloyds Register standards. She comes complete with a modern stabilization system to reduce roll motion even during rough seas, and the yacht also has ‘at anchor stabilizers’ to keep things smooth even at anchor/zero speed.

Air conditioning keeps things cool even on the hottest summer days, and Wi-Fi connection is readily available throughout.

Here’s How Much It Costs To Rent The St. David Yacht On Below Deck Season 10

It is the largest yacht on the series to date.

As the latest boat to be featured on Below Deck Season 10, the St. David yacht is just as lavish — and pricey — as you’d expect. According to Boat International, it was created in 2008 as part of the Benetti fleet, and it’s the largest yacht to appear on Below Deck . The yacht itself is somewhat of a celebrity and has made appearances at the Cannes Film Festival while also sailing to locations like the Seychelles, Red Sea, and Abu Dhabi.

The boat was last sold in 2018 for an asking price of €22,500,000 (about $23,026,027). Currently, you can rent the St. David Yacht through Morley Yachts. A week-long rental is going to run you up €325,000 per week (about $383,514) plus expenses during low season. During high season, that price can go up to €345,000 ($407,115) a week.

If you’re curious about what the ship looks like, chief stew Fraser Olender gave a tour of the yacht for Bravo. In a preview video, he leads viewers through the main deck to a sundeck that has two “bunny pads” that host classes like yoga, boxing, and drinking sessions. “It’s truly a special place on board to be graced with,” he said.

Next is the jacuzzi, which Olender noted is the biggest he’s worked with so far. But he adds that his favorite place is the huge sky lounge, which lets in a lot of light and has a classical Baroque theme. Beyond that, the yacht features six rooms, which include a master suite and five cabins. It can hold a total of 12 guests, along with 14 crewmates.

There is certainly a number of fabulous living quarters, but below deck is, unsurprisingly, a lot less luxurious. “We absolutely have no space back here. The smallest pantry I’ve ever had to work,” he says, showing off a tiny room. “But it caters to all our needs, and we’ve just got to make due.” On the plus side, he notes that their crew mess room is “massive,” adding that he doesn’t get much time to spend there. Though, based on the Season 10 trailer , some crew drama is going to happen there.

As for Olender’s fellow crew members, they’ll all be led by Captain Lee as he sails the St. David around the waters of St. Lucia in the Caribbean. As Lee soon realizes, running a bigger boat means more crew members and a lot more problems. Olender has to navigate a major conflict between some of the stews as tensions heat up in the interior department. Meanwhile, chef Rachel Hargrove raises the bar on cuisine, but soon the pressure to maintain that workload starts to overwhelm her. And then there’s all the messy romance drama as Bosun Ross McHarg starts up several casual relationships with the other women on board.

Clearly, there’s a lot going on deck of the largest yacht on the series. So while you might not have the money to rent the St. David yourself, at least you can tune into its drama when Season 10 premieres on Nov. 21.

4 boats exit, 330 left in Bayview Mackinac Race: "All out war"

Jason St. Onge just wants to cross the finish line.

“We don't have delusions of grandeur. We just don’t want to be the pickle boat, dead last,” St. Onge told Shifting Gears. “I don’t know how we’re going to do, but we’ll have one hell of a cheering section.”

He is racing on Rascal, one of the record-setting 334 boats that registered for the 100th Port Huron to Mackinac race on Saturday, July 20 to sail 204 nautical miles on a single course that follows the 1925 route created by the Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit.

From its traditional start in southern Lake Huron, the boats headed north along the Michigan shoreline, passing south of Bois Blanc Island, sailing west to east at the finish line between Round Island and Mackinac Island, organizers said.

The competition is intense.

Maverick shatters CYC record, then mast fails

Until now, the Bayview Mackinac Race record was 316 boats in 1985 and a huge contrast compared with the 200 boats that raced last year, said David Stoyka, Bayview Yacht Club spokesman.

By Sunday afternoon, four boats had pulled out of the competition, he said:

Miami Vice, a Santana 35 owned by Jayson Miller of Plymouth and based at the North Cape Yacht Club in LaSalle, Michigan, withdrew before the start.

Maverick, the carbon fiber Andrews 80 skippered by Sanford Burris of Kirkland, Ohio, suffered a mast failure. A week ago, Maverick broke the record in the 115th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, finishing the course of 289 nautical miles up Lake Michigan in 22 hours, 24 minutes and 23 seconds.

Last week, racers dealt with storms. This week, light air delayed the race.

Ken Meyer of Columbus Township, Michigan, owner and skipper of Freedom, a Catalina 42, received a text late Saturday that said, “Sending good energy for a safe and successful race.” He responded, “Screw all that. Send wind. LOL”

The race tracker doesn’t look anything like years past because all the little boats are clumped together. Boats split into two groups are now racing in one.

It’s a cluster.

By late morning Sunday, most racers had sailed past the Michigan thumb as they headed north on Lake Huron.

Tim Prophit, 65, of St. Clair Shores, Michigan, skipper of Fast Tango, a North American 40, predicted before the race began that it would be an “ all-out war ” on the water. The race tracker showed him consistently holding the lead in his class.

St. Onge reported that things were looking good on Rascal, the Catalina 34 owned by Bart Huthwaite Jr. of Royal Oak.

The six-man crew includes Andrew Doud, owner of the only grocery store on the iconic island, too. Their sponsors include Arnold Freight and Mission Point Resort.

“We’re about 30 miles off Oscoda,” St. Onge texted Shifting Gears at noon. “Heavy seas currently. We’re doing OK. Not the pickle boat but the day is young.”

He is racing against boats from 17 states: Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin — as well as Ontario and Manitoba provinces in Canada.

St. Onge is the Mackinac Island fire chief, president of the school board, a member of the Mackinac Island City Council, owner of the Cannonball Oasis hotdog and ice cream stand and a board member of the Cleveland Electrical Cooperative, which delivers electricity to the entire eastern Upper Peninsula.

He left the island once, to attend the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and returned to raise daughters Mia, 8, and Margo, 5, with his wife, a nutritionist who commutes to work the hospital in St. Ignace.

The family has been tied to the island for generations and long before Mackinac was established as a global tourist destination known for its charm, hiking and ban on autos. Everyone depends on horse and buggy or bicycles, including businesses.

“My dad drove the snow plow for the state park. He did maintenance at Fort Mackinac, too. Mom worked in shops and hotels as a clerk,” St. Onge said. “My dad’s side goes back to tribal times on the island. The earliest baptismal record is from 1823, attended by Father Gabriel Richard, who founded the University of Michigan. My dad is native American, Chippewa. Mom is from Grosse Pointe Woods.”

While St. Onge, 50, sailed the Straits of Mackinac on a Catalina 22 back in the day, he decided this year was the time to race Mackinac and put together an island crew.

‘You can’t wait forever’

“I always wanted to do the race but just taking three or four days off in the middle of the summer season has never been feasible,” he said. “But sometimes you just have to. You can’t wait forever. This is bucket list for me.”

Unable to sleep, obsessed with tracker

Veronica Dobrowolski, 54, of Mackinac Island is co-owner and CEO of Arnold Freight (which delivers all food, beverages, horses and other non-human cargo to the island) and a sponsor of Rascal.

Not all boats have individual sponsors but this one does because, well, you know.

“Everyone on this island is aware of Rascal,” Dobrowolski said Sunday. “I couldn’t sleep. I looked them up on the tracker and thought, ‘Oh, crap. They haven’t gone too far.’ It’s weird being downtown and not seeing Jason or Andrew. You walk by the grocery store and see Andrew. You go downtown and you pass Jason on his bicycle.”

Before they left for Port Huron, she went to Patrick Doud’s Irish Pub for breakfast with Jason and Andrew. “I said, “I want you to come back alive. I need you.’”

Tim Hygh, executive director of the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau, said Sunday, “Andrew and Jason are lifelong friends, so how cool is it that they can do this together? These guys work 24/7, which makes getting some time off the island even more special.”

Prayers at mass

Mackinac Island Mayor Margaret Doud said after leaving Sainte Anne’s Catholic Church, that Jason St. Onge and Andrew Doud are top of mind right now.

“It was a bit of a head scratcher when I heard they were both sailing. But then I thought, what a great experience they’ll have together,” she said. “The Mackinac crew and the entire fleet were in my prayers at Mass today. Looking forward to greeting them when they get back to the island.”

Margaret Doud, who was first elected in 1975, is now America’s longest-serving mayor. She runs the Windermere Hotel on Main Street on Mackinac Island, just down the street from her cousin’s grocery store.

“I own the grocery story. I control all the ice for this race. That’s the most power I’ll ever have in my life,” said Andrew Doud, 49, of Mackinac Island. “My expectation is to be intense and do the best we can. I bought a foul weather jacket. I haven’t sailed in 25 years. This is an absolute bucket list with great guys.”

Bucket list wishes — make the time

Bart Huthwaite Jr., 56, management consultant from Royal Oak is the owner/skipper whose family has had a home on the island for 36 years. His mom ran a shop called Nina’s Brass across from the famed Pink Pony.

After 16 races to Mackinac, both Chicago and Port Huron courses, said, “I’ve always been the crew. I’ve never been the person in charge. I’ve been working on the boat getting it ready for months. This is a huge milestone for me.”

His son, Chaz Huthwaite, 18, of Rochester Hills will be racing his first Mackinac race, too. A recent graduate of Stony Creek High School, he’s headed to the University of Michigan in the fall. Also on the boat: Mike Hegarty of Farmington Hills, Michigan, rear commodore of the Mackinac Island Yacht Club, Mike Gidley of Franklin, Michigan, past commodore of Mackinac Island Yacht Club.

All crew have multi-generational ties to the island.

Gidley, 62, a retired manufacturing company owner, said, “The opportunity to be on the boat with these guys for three or four days? I could not pass it up.”

Hegarty, 57, a high school social studies teacher from Wixom, Michigan, said crew represents so many pieces of a very special island.

‘This is the first all-island crew. This way the island finally has a boat to cheer for,” St. Onge said. “I bought new foul weather gear. I’ve been drinking lots of water. Bought all the updated safety gear. Thanks to my wife Marielle for letting this happen.”
