WEATHER ALERT

A beach hazard statement and a rip current statement in effect for Coastal Flagler and Coastal Volusia Regions

Hitler’s yacht sits off the coast of this florida beach. here’s why, the ostwind is one of many strange objects found in florida’s waters.

Anthony Talcott , Digital Journalist

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Nearly 5 miles off the coast of Miami Beach, a yacht sits at the bottom of the ocean.

This vessel — dubbed the Ostwind — has a strange history. It was once owned by Adolf Hitler.

The 80-foot-long yacht was commissioned by the infamous dictator in 1938 as an Olympic racing yacht, though it never actually competed.

According to historian Mike Miller , Hitler’s plan was to ride the yacht into England after Germany’s victory, where he would accept Winston Churchill’s surrender aboard the boat.

However, history had different plans.

After Germany’s defeat, the U.S. reportedly took control of the Ostwind, which was used as a training craft at the U.S. Naval Academy before being sold to a Nazi memorabilia collector in the 1970s, the Ocala Star-Banner reports.

The collector took the yacht to Jacksonville for repairs, but it was ultimately abandoned, and a marina owner then took possession.

Despite offers from a Nazi group to buy the yacht and turn it into a shrine, the marina owner ultimately reached out to Miami Beach officials about using the Ostwind as an artificial reef.

Eventually, the boat was taken from Jacksonville down to Miami Beach in 1989, and it was sunk off the coast to around 275 feet deep, state records indicate .

Nowadays, the only way to view the WWII-era relic is to throw on some scuba gear and take a dive.

Of course, the Ostwind isn’t the only strange object to be sunken off of Miami’s coast.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the following items have also been sunk near Miami Beach to create artificial reefs:

  • Smoke stacks
  • Radio towers
  • A water tower
  • Oil rig structures
  • A railroad barge
  • A minesweeper warship

Test-driving the electric bentley blower jnr.

The Bentley Blower Jnr is an all-electric Bentley with a range of around 65 miles

Safe to say, the first all-electric Bentley probably isn’t what you expected. It’s not a silent, speedy and ultra-luxurious land yacht built as a sporty rival to the Rolls-Royce Spectre , and it’s not a battery-powered SUV either.

Instead, it’s an 85-percent scale replica of the 1929 Bentley Blower. Built under license by UK startup The Little Car Company, it’s called the Blower Jnr and it might just be the perfect city car.

Entirely electric, the Blower Jnr sends about 20 horsepower to its rear wheels and has a range in the region of 65 miles. It has a top speed of about 45 to 50 mph, but US legislation means it’s limited to 25 mph over here. Only in the UK and Europe – where it is also street legal – is the real top speed achievable. That said, you’ll be lucky to go much beyond 25 mph in today’s city traffic so the Blower Jnr’s limited performance feels right at home.

You might well be familiar with The Little Car Company. Based in Oxfordshire, UK, the startup first produced a scaled-down Bugatti Type 35 , known as the Baby II and built to celebrate Bugatti’s 110th birthday. Next came equally compact replicas of the Aston Martin DB5 – complete with James Bond gadgets , if you’d like – and Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa . All built with not just permission from their respective parents, but with input from factory test drivers. These electric cars can even be purchased from official dealerships, and feature genuine parts; in the case of the Testa Ross J this means real Ferrari paint, leather, badges and pedals.

Street legal in the US, UK and Europe, the car is an 85% scale replica of the 1929 Bentley Blower

Could the houston rockets pursue cavs guard donovan mitchell, while gerrit cole recovers the new york yankees are thriving on the mound.

Not just visually impressive, these cars are built in a similar way to the originals, and set up to handle like them too, but with modern safety and convenience discreetly in mind. As such, the Bentley looks just like its full-size sibling, but has seat belts for its driver and passengers (who sit one behind the other), and the bodywork has been designed to comply with pedestrian safety regulation. Although not technically a car, the Blower Jnr is classified as a street-legal quadricycle and can be driven on the road by anyone with a full driver’s license.

Inside, the interior features genuine Bentley leather – as used by its own recently-completed run of full-size ‘continuation’ Blowers – and a dashboard that looks a lot like the original, but with dials and switchgear repurposed for the electric drivetrain. The rope-bound steering wheel looks and feels authentic, and so too does the external parking brake. The actual brakes are from a Ducatti motorbike and, although the pedal demands a firm push, are much better than the 1929 aesthetics might suggest.

Almost ready for production, the Bentley Blower Jnr driven here is chassis number two. It’s a prototype that The Little Car Company has invited journalists to drive and provide last-minute feedback on before work starts on customer cars.

The Blower Jnr is built in the UK by The Little Car Company and licensed by Bentley

It’s a warm and sunny day in South West London. I collect the car from the secret bunker of an underground car storage facility and head for Chelsea, Battersea and the bits of London I know without relying on Google. My first task is to join a two-lane highway and navigate a set of large roundabouts; it’s the sort of thing that would feel intimidating in a similarly-sized Caterham, but because the Blower Jnr is much taller, I don’t feel as vulnerable. It helps that this is 85-percent the size of what is a rather large car, so the Junior is only about eight inches shorter and narrower than my Mazda Miata. It fills enough of the lane to prevent opportunistic overtaking by following vehicles, while visibility is as good as you’d expect from a car with no roof, doors, windows or much in the way of a windshield. The mirrors also work well, but it’s just as easy to turn around.

Down the Kings Road, into Chelsea and I’ve never received so much attention. I’m used to driving flashy press cars, but in these parts of London anything south of a Bugatti is usually ignored. Not so the Blower Jnr. Taxi drivers lean out of windows to ask its age; slack-jawed pedestrians point and stare; one rollerskating gentleman even asks me to tow him along the street for a photo.

I’m sure most onlookers think this is a 1920s car of some description, taken out for a rare jaunt by its eccentric owner on a sunny day. I doubt they notice the compact scale, since the Blower Jnr is about the size of a real Bugatti Type 35, and actually larger than some other cars from the 1920s. But then they notice the lack of sound, the missing tailpipe and the license plate, which has the tell-tale green bar used in the UK to identify electric vehicles. They probably also noticed the two GoPro cameras struck to the hood and the six-foot photographer folded into the rear seat.

Far from the look-at-me supercars that usually prowl these streets, I reckon we made everyone’s day. London delivery drivers, usually known for their sharp elbows, even let me out of junctions with a cheery wave.

Fully electric, the Blower Jnr has two seats, one behind the other, and is classified as a ... [+] quadricycle

Driving impressions? I’ve not driven an original Blower but have ridden as a passenger in a 1920s Bentley Straight Six. The Jnr feels broadly similar, with slow steering and suspension that wasn’t too pleased with London’s massive speed bumps. That said, it’s a satisfyingly authentic ride that gives the driver enough to think about without being all-consuming. Of course, being electric means there are no gears to worry about and you can spend more time enjoying the view across that long vented hood, complete with leather straps.

Being street legal, there are lights, turn signals, an immobilizer and a horn, which is controlled with a button on the foot rest. There’s a windshield too, but it’s a tiny semicircle because, if it were any larger, it would have to be a full-size screen complete with wipers to comply with regulation. You’ll want to wear sunglasses or, better still, a pair of vintage goggles.

The rear-mounted fuel tank has been repurposed as a surprisingly spacious trunk

Roaming through London in the pint-sized Bentley, it’s frustrating to see the direction the automotive industry has taken in its pursuit of electrification. I’m driving what could easily be the most coveted car in the city, yet it is small, easy to drive and emitting zero pollution. It is the exact opposite of the 2.5-tonne SUVs everyone else desires, and its compact size means there’s none of the intimidation you get from a contemporary supercar. Curbed wheels are a thing of the past; London’s infamous width-restrictors are blissfully ignored; parking is easy.

The Little Car Company has stepped up a gear with the Blower Jnr. Being street legal makes it significantly more usable than the firm’s smaller, private-land-only Bugattis, Aston Martins and Ferraris. A compact, city-friendly electric car that is beautifully designed and hugely desirable – the Blower Jnr takes the best of the past and blends it with what we need in the future. The perfect city car for a sunny day? Absolutely.

Hudson River Ice Yacht Club trophy found in New Zealand

  • May 17, 2024

yacht race photos

RHINECLIFF- A Loving Cup Trophy from 1904 was found in the North Haven Hospice Thrift Shop in Mangawhai, New Zealand, by a woman who had never heard of ice yachting nor the Hudson River Club.  Debi Shwer of Auckland, New Zealand was visiting Mangawhai, when she stopped into a thrift shop there.  The Sterling Cup caught her eye, and she was determined to find out more.

Contacting HRIYPT President Robert Wills through the organization’s website, she described her objective of learning more about ice yachting after seeing the inscription on the trophy.

“I was just visiting my mother in law in Mangawhai for Easter.  I wish I had a better look around (the thrift shop) because I was on a time limit from my husband waiting in the car!  I am honestly fascinated by how it ended up in a charity shop in Northland New Zealand,” she said.

Shwer purchased the trophy and sent it to the club where it now sits as a part of their collection.  The club plans is to loan it to an appropriate institution this winter where it can be displayed.

The Trophy was awarded on March 5, 1904, to the yacht “Rainbow”, a Hyde Park Ice Yacht Club boat owned by Capt. Owen Roberts, for winning a ten-mile race for Fourth Class Boats.  Future President Franklin Roosevelt’s boat “Hawk” came in second.

“Rainbow” was recorded in club books in 1903, and then again in 1910.  It was built by George Buckhout, preeminent ice yacht builder, in Poughkeepsie.  Subsequently, Capt. Roberts sailed the boat in 1912 out of the North Shrewsbury Ice Boat & Yacht Club in Red Bank, New Jersey, where it was outfitted with the most modern of hardware and sails, a “Marconi Rig” (the triangular sail used on most sailboats today), and renamed “Rainbow 2nd”.  It then disappears from the records, until it shows up in Wisconsin.

Recently offered for sale there, it was purchased by the Lawrence Family of Newburgh, New York, who have been competitive ice yacht racers and Hudson River Ice Yacht Club members for generations, and were instrumental in the restoration of “Jack Frost,” the 1880 multiple world champion ice yacht of Archibald Rogers of Hyde Park, New York, and still sailed today by the Hudson River Ice Yacht Club.

Canadian discovery of orca’s superpower makes them even more scary as yacht attacks rise

Another yacht was sunk this week by a gang of orcas in the Strait of Gibraltar

In a story that is becoming terrifyingly common, another yacht was sunk this week by a gang of orcas in the Strait of Gibraltar. And new research from scientists at the University of British Columbia shows that these killer whales are so efficient at breathing, they can perform a dive on just a single breath of air.

Canadian discovery of orca’s superpower makes them even more scary as yacht attacks rise Back to video

The researchers combined drone footage with data from tags suction-cupped to 11 orcas off the coast of B.C. to gather information on the animals’ habits. They found that the whales in their study took about 1.2 breaths per minute while resting, and 1.5 to 1.8 per minute while travelling or hunting.

In comparison, humans take about 15 breaths per minute while at rest, and between 40 and 60 when exercising. “It’s the equivalent of holding your breath and running to the grocery store, shopping, and coming back before breathing again,” said co-author Dr. Beth Volpov in a press release on the study, which was published in the journal PLOS ONE .

The study also confirmed what scientists had long suspected; that orcas take just a single breath of air between dives. “Killer whales are like sprinters who don’t have the marathon endurance of blue and humpback whales to make deep and prolonged dives,” said co-author Dr. Andrew Trites. However, they make the most of each breath.

That energy was on full display last Sunday, when the Alboran Cognac, a 15-metre sailing yacht travelling in the narrow body of water that separates southern Spain from North Africa, was attacked and eventually sunk by a pod of orcas. It was the fifth sinking in just three years in the region around southwest Europe. No humans have been injured or killed in the attacks.

The yacht’s two-person crew radioed for help and was soon rescued by a passing oil tanker. But the vessel’s hull had sustained serious damage and the boat began to take on water, which eventually caused it to sink, according to news reports .

A group of around 40 orcas live off the coasts of Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Gibraltar, and have been attacking boats across this region since 2020. Most occur between May and August in or near the Strait of Gibraltar, but a month ago a group of whales was seen circling a large yacht off the coast of northern Spain, suggesting they were spreading out their activities further and earlier than in other years.

Spain’s Maritime Safety and Rescue Society has put out a release warning sailors of the attacks, with a map of areas to avoid if possible, and advice to stay close to the shore, within safe limits.

The translated statement adds: “It is prohibited to use deterrent measures against orcas that may cause death, damage, annoyance or concern to these cetaceans and, as long as it does not pose a danger to people or animals, it is suggested that photographs be taken of the specimens to have better registration and identification. The photographs will be sent by email to the nearest Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre.”
