A bareboat charter is simplicity at it's best. At the end of your charter you simply hand the boat back. You are completely free from the responsibility of the boat jobs and maintenance normally associated with yacht ownership. Whilst sailing you have the reassurance that our experienced base team are nearby to help you, just in case there are any problems. Why bareboat charter in the UK?

Sailing from the Solent has something for everyone. Head east, and you can explore the beautiful harbour of Chichester and onwards to Brighton.

To the west, particularly on a longer charter, you'll find some of the most beautiful destinations the South Coast has to offer. Visiting Studland Bay by boat is magical, explore the spectacular Jurassic Coast or push further west into the delights of Lyme Bay and Dartmouth. 

And of course, if you head south you arrive in the legendary Channel Islands, and legislation permitting, there's the north coast of Brittany.

Sailing around the Solent itself has plenty to occupy any sailor for a week or a fortnight, with an amazing range of harbours, ports, rivers, anchorages and beaches to explore. We can suggest routes for more experienced skippers or easier options to suit your level of experience.

Englands climate has a temperate maritime climate. The southeast has the mildest climate, relatively warm and dry and can have long and golden summers. The north and west are colder and usually wetter. The North Atlantic Drift causes milder weather conditions. The moderating effects of the Gulf Stream are strongest in the western coastal region.

The country has a temperate climate, so rain, sun or cool greyish hours can occur on the same day. Temperate winters and cool summers are typical. Summer is pleasantly warm. Average temperatures range from 18-23°C. Between May and September, the weather really warms up. July is normally the warmest month. Winter and Autumn are the seasons that have the wettest conditions. The temperature is usually between 3 and 6°C in winter. The coldest months are January and February. Rainfall is spread fairly evenly throughout the year. London alone actually has an annual rainfall lower than Paris, Sydney and New York. Scotland, in general, is colder and more prone to snow in winter.

What is a Bareboat Charter?

A 'bareboat' charter is a yacht rental where you hire just the yacht without crew. Bareboat charters are normally booked by sailors. On Bareboat charters , there is an option to add a skipper, or a hostess or a combination of the two. If you are chartering a bareboat because you have the relevant license, you will be in charge of everything from navigation, sailing, mooring and safety. It is up to you how you decide to cook or if you decide to eat at local restaurants along the way.  Bareboat charters offer tremendous freedom to explore wherever, and whenever ( weather dependant of course!) offering a truly unique holiday experience for all the family. At least one member of the group must be an experienced sailor, or you can pre-organise to have a skipper on board if you’re exploring a new region for the first time and wish to relax and allow a local to guide you around the coast.

Catamarans are one of the fastest-growing areas of the charter world as they deliver great comfort and privacy, whilst providing expansive communal areas for relaxing with friends and family. Bareboat catamarans don't heel (tip) like a monohull, providing a more stable feeling on the yacht. Catamarans are preferable for those who suffer, or who are worried about being seasick. Their shallow draft also makes them better adapted for getting closer to shore when exploring islands and inlets. Especially in areas like the Caribbean and Bahamas . 

If you are a party of several couples or a family , with inexperienced sailors, we'd normally recommend a catamaran. Please note that catamarans are generally more expensive per person than a monohull because the boat is larger. However, this is compensated by the payback in extra space for everyone!

You have the option of adding a qualified skipper to your charters who will take responsibility for sailing/ motoring the boat whenever required whilst giving you a personalized, local insight on the area. You can take the helm with the confidence that a knowledgeable skipper is there to assist you or to teach you their best techniques of sailing or maneuvering.

A skippered bareboat is less expensive than a crewed yacht. By having a skipper on your yacht, it totally eliminates the stress of navigating through coral, determining your course. This option allows you to relax with friends and family without worrying about the safety of everyone on board. Tips for Successful Bareboat Charters

A successful bareboat charter begins long before you arrive at the Marina. The entire crew should have a very clear idea of what they're getting into. We highly recommend that you do the following before you book your bareboat charter:

• Clearly communicate to all involved what will be expected of them.
• Check the weather twice a day! Read our weather page for more detailed information about the types of winds/climate that you could be sailing in. 
• Plan an itinerary that is not overly aggressive - unless everyone is experienced, sailors. Remember, many in the party probably want to return refreshed and relaxed from their holiday, not stressed from oversailing!

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Sailing Levels

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Winds force 3-5 (7-21 Knots) with approximately 15-20nm per day. Intermediate experience required. Predominately line of sight navigation but an understanding of how to sail in open water.

Winds force 4-6 (11-27 Knots) with mileage of approximately 20nm+ per day. Ideal for experienced skippers looking to venture out to new destinations. Day skipper standard but with experienced crew would be recommended.

What experience & qualifications do i need, what type of yachts can i charter.

We have an excellent selection of quality sailing yachts for bareboat yacht charter ranging from 30' to 56' including all the well-known names, Jeanneau, Beneteau, Dufour and Bavaria. Most are less than 4 years old and many are brand new models. In some cruising areas we can offer spacious owner's layouts with a master cabin.

Catamarans offer plenty of deck space and a large cockpit, ideal for relaxed sailing holidays. The saloon, with its panoramic windows, is spacious and airy. Even if you haven’t sailed cats before, you’ll be impressed by their easy handling. Cats are very popular in the Caribbean where you spend most nights on anchor rather than on a crowded town quay or marina.

What back-up is there?

All our charter yachts are fully equipped for cruising in comfort and have full safety, navigational and domestic equipment.

On arrival you will be given a technical briefing on your yacht and cruising area. We do recommend that you check your yacht carefully before you leave the marina as any technical issues can be quickly rectified at the base before getting out on the water.

Before you set sail you are given contact numbers for the base, including emergency out-of-hours telephone numbers, so help is just a phone call away at any time. Should any repairs be necessary during your charter, the base manager will usually arrange for these to be done in your nearest harbour.

Had a fantastic week chartering Blue Otter, Alex was incredibly helpful and sent loads of information and date checking prior to booking. There was a handover video and both the handover and return were really smooth. The boat was lovely and well maintained and Lee was really helpful in recommending places to visit (and helping identify the steering issue as an autopilot takeover - doh!). Definitely will be back and would fully recommend!

Just back from a lovely week in the Solent. Great service from HPYC from first inquiry through to return handover. Very straightforward to deal with, and the yacht was in excellent condition. We've chartered from many companies in the UK and abroad and the attention to detail (and flawless inventory!) was second to none. Everything about the yacht and equipment had clearly been well looked after and was in immaculate condition. Great service, will use again.

We had a great time sailing with Lee for a few days at the beginning of September. Hamble Point Yacht Charters supplied us an impeccable 45 ft Hanse yacht, which was handled with complete mastery by Captain Lee.It was a privilege to sail with Lee, who is clearly a highly skilled professional taking great pride in his work ... but who is also a fantastic character with a great sense of humour and plenty of fun stories to keep the whole family entertained. He balances the serious side of safety and learning about sailing with a whopping dose of amusement and good cheer. We sailed the Solent in some decent seas, visited Bucklers Hard on the banks of the Beaulieu River and learned lots about British nautical history. Our boys started somewhat of a fishing trend catching bass off the back of the boat in Portsmouth and we would love to sail with Lee again in the future.The man truly knows his stuff, maintained the boat impeccably and went to every effort to ensure that we had a great time. This was the first time we had tried chartering and as experienced racing sailors we didn't know what to expect. Covid has closed down all our events this year so this was a chance to get afloat at least once in 2020. What a great experience and Alex and all the Hamble staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. We had a great three days and we will be back !!
