Charter Yacht Shows, which bring together brokers, agents, captains, and other professionals in the charter yacht industry, have a common focus: that of facilitating exquisite vacations aboard crewed luxury yachts. And while there are shows in every major charter location (Barcelona, Greece and Turkey, to name a few preceding the upcoming Mediterranean season), there is only one  Newport Charter Yacht Show  to showcase New England, its feted cruising grounds, and the vessels – both motor and sailing – that will be available for charter during prime summer season.

newport yachting season

An annual event for more than 35 years, the four-day Newport Charter Yacht Show is presented by  Helly Hansen Newport  and owned and produced by  Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard . Scheduled for Monday through Thursday, June 20-23, it takes place at the shipyard’s 10-acre facility in the heart of downtown Newport, Rhode Island, one of the world’s most distinguished yachting meccas.

“Newport is the gateway to New England cruising,” said Missy Johnston, president of the  American Yacht Charter Association  (AYCA) and owner of  Northrop Johnson Yacht Charters  in Newport. “It is where sailing yachts blow in, traveling from the Caribbean on the trade winds, and where motor yachts cruise in, coming up from Florida and the Bahamas. Virtually every charter yacht stops in Newport first, and later in the season they may end up in Maine or somewhere else up the East Coast. Then they all return to Newport and head south for the winter.”

Peeling back its layers, the Newport Charter Yacht Show is a well-planned showcase of magnificent charter yachts alongside an eclectic display of ancillary goods and services for the charter industry. It offers charter brokers the opportunity to network, share knowledge, and most important, inspect the  participating yachts . They meet with agents, captains and crew; review charters that took place over the winter; and talk about charters to come. They experience service onboard, including tasting food from new chefs and personally inspecting the linens and dinnerware that are used. If a yacht has had a refit or remodeling, or if it has added to its array of water toys, it’s important for the brokers to know every detail.

“A broker gets to know the personalities of the yachts and crews so that a perfect match can be made for a client and a tailored, unforgettable vacation experience can be developed,” said Johnston.

Helping to highlight each yacht’s offerings are the show’s  special events , tailored for serious fun. They include a marquee Chef Competition and contests for captains, deck hands and stewardesses. (Tablescaping, Signature Cocktails and Drone Flying are among the most popular.) Sponsors and vendors join brokers and agents in a lively Yacht Hop that features each yacht in “full entertainment mode,” while the AYCA holds its annual meeting and signature informational seminars for brokers, captains and crew alike. (This year will feature interaction with vendors and tour operators from Newport and surrounding areas who can provide high-end tours and experiences that charter clients would enjoy.)

“We are excited to have three yachts in the show,” said Madeline Mancini of  Denison Yachting , which has offices in Monaco and throughout the U.S., including in Newport. “It’s an important market to be in, so we always come back. Last year our charter season here was super busy; summer is much better in New England than anywhere else in the U.S. or in the Caribbean or the Bahamas.”

Denison Yachting’s registered yachts include the 102’ M/Y  Magnum Ride , the 92’ M/Y  Slipaway  and the 92’ M/Y  Helios .

“Our summer charter range typically extends from New York City to Bar Harbor,” said Nick Brucato, who has been the captain of  Helios  for four years and spent last summer chartering primarily in Maine. “Some of  Helios ’s distinguishing features are that she is fast (capable of cruising at 20 knots) and has a low fuel burn, which is very important right now. She also has stabilizers (to reduce roll due to wind or waves) and is very maneuverable, with a shallow draft, so we can get into anchorages and spots that other charter yachts might not be able to get into.”

As there are connoisseurs of wine, music, and exotic cars, there also are discriminating clients who enjoy luxury charter yacht vacations. It takes a team of professionals to make good things happen on this front, and the Newport Charter Yacht Show plays an important role in bringing them together for the New England cruising season.

Newport Charter Yacht Show Signals Start of Summer Season in New England

' src=

As the Newport Charter Yacht Show approaches, the anticipation of summer in New England swells, marking the beginning of a vibrant season in the region. Scheduled for Sunday, June 23rd, the event will see over 15 luxury yachts docking at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard, emphasizing the readiness of yacht charter professionals, including agents, owners, brokers, and captains, to capitalize on four days of networking and showcasing at the northeast’s premier show of its kind.

Veronica Brown, Director of the Newport Charter Yacht Show, highlighted the pivotal role of yacht chartering professionals in ensuring an exceptional onboard experience for guests. “Brokers, suppliers, charter managers, and especially captains and crew are the backbone of yacht chartering; they make the on-board guest experience amazing,” said Brown. “Annually for more than 35 years, this event has been bringing these parties together on one stage where yachts, whether they are new to the charter market or have made changes since they were last scouted, can be viewed by industry representatives.”

Among the participating yachts is the 102’ M/Y Vivace from Northrop & Johnson, a seasoned participant in charter shows across various destinations. Lauren Littlejohn, Charter Marketing Manager at Northrop & Johnson, emphasized Vivace’s suitability for cruising in New England, offering unparalleled accommodations and local insights for guests.

Highlighting the significance of yacht participation in charter shows, Jenny Mullen of Worth Avenue Yachts emphasized the added value of crew competitions in fostering camaraderie and innovation within the industry. The inclusion of Windward, a 90’ Cheoy Lee M/Y, in the show underscores its appeal for a New England summer experience, combining luxury with personalized service.

Notably, the Newport Charter Yacht Show features a diverse array of vessels, including the majestic 91’ S/Y Tree of Life, representing the sailboat category. Karen Kelly Shea, President of Nicholson Yachts, expressed excitement about Tree of Life’s debut in the charter market, offering a unique sailing experience without compromising on comfort.

Aside from yacht displays, the show hosts marine and specialty display vendors, providing opportunities for the public to engage with industry experts and explore the latest offerings in yachting and maritime services.

The Newport Charter Yacht Show is made possible through partnerships with sponsors such as Akzonobel, Bridge Liquors, Dockwalk magazine, and others, reflecting a collaborative effort to elevate the yachting experience and support charitable causes like the Boys & Girls Club of Newport County.

With its intimate setting and comprehensive program, the Newport Charter Yacht Show serves as a premier platform for industry professionals to connect, showcase their offerings, and set the tone for a spectacular summer season in New England.

2022 PADDLE FOR ACCESS

2022 PADDLE FOR ACCESS

  • Saturday, August 20, 2022
  • 8:00 AM 12:00 PM 08:00 12:00

The 5th Annual Paddle for Access hosted by Clean Ocean Access is a 3 mile or 6 mile paddle (SUP) around Goat Island in Newport, RI.

Clean water and healthy oceans are critical to fun ocean events, which is why we believe in a clean, healthy ocean that is accessible to all. Shoreline access limitations inspired the roots of our organization back in 2006 and to this day, it remains a critical issue of focus. Paddle for Access celebrates our work to monitor all 50 rights-of-way across Aquidneck Island and ensure everyone has access to the shoreline. The event also sheds light on many other issues that impact public access to the shoreline, including erosion, sea-level rise, invasive species, and long term shoreline planning. Sign up to participate or volunteer to help us achieve our goal to preserve and protect public shoreline access.

All dollars raised will be directed to the endowed fund which provides financial assistance to children and families seeking to participate in Sail Newport’s Summer Youth Sailing Program. “Tim loved sailing in and around Narragansett Bay and loved encouraging new sailors, young and old. This Fund seems to be a perfect way to pay tribute to him in a way that he would have supported, sharing his love of the water and providing an opportunity for young sailors to experience sailing for the first time,” says Kathleen Dunn, Mills’ sister. Newport International Boat Show Officially Kicks Off The 2022 Boat Show Season

  • September 15, 2022
  • By Toby Lapinski

Newport, R.I. – The Newport International Boat Show announced that its 51st event will take place September 15-18, 2022, at the Newport Yachting Center Marina in downtown Newport along the waterfront in Newport, Rhode Island.

“The number of new and innovative boats and products, as well as new events to entertain visitors at this year’s Show is so exciting,” said Jocelyn Emory, Marketing Director of Newport Exhibition Group. “Gates open tomorrow, and we can’t wait for everyone to see what we have in store.”

This year’s Show includes a diverse line-up of new boats and products that are making their world premiere or U.S. debut. These 22 vessels and 12 products will be identified with Newport for New Products (NFNP) decals and burgees located throughout the Show. Industry experts will judge each entry on opening day and awards are given in several categories. The People’s Choice Award for Best Overall Boat Debut is chosen by attendees before the Show via online voting and all the winners are announced on Friday, September 16. Eleven of the new products are designated as “Green” entries for their environmentally conscious design and new for this year, several entries are highlighted for their “accessibility” features. View the Show Directory for the line-up or visit the website to chart your course.

To add to the Show experience, all boat show attendees can meet Tokyo 2020 Olympian Stephanie Roble and US Sailing Team athlete Mac Agnese at The Bohlin Tent from 1 – 3 p.m. on Friday. For families, join Newport Hospital celebrating 150 years for a children’s activity on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m in The Bohlin Tent. To round out the Show experience, the 12 Metre Yacht Club, the North American fleet of 12 Metre yachts, will be hosting the 12 Metre North American Championships September 16-18. On the final day of racing, Sunday, September 18, the fleet of 12 Metres will be parading through Newport Harbor at approximately 10 a.m. All attendees are welcome at the Newport Yachting Center Marina docks for this must-see moment.

There will be limited box offices on site during the Show days, therefore it is recommended to purchase advance tickets online. Digital tickets will be scanned as visitors enter and a wristband will be applied which grants visitors access to all gates throughout the day. Thursday is opening Preview Day, sponsored by Discover Newport, and tickets are $40* while One-Day Tickets for Friday through Sunday are $30 on the day of. In addition, military families and veterans, as well as residents of Newport County, sponsored by Hogan Associates Real Estate and Carey, Richmond and Viking Insurance, are able to purchase tickets in-person at Gate 1 for $18 with valid ID on Friday, September 16. Children under 12 are free all four days of the Show, courtesy of Newport Hospital.

To make attendees’ experience seamless upon entry, Show management recommends purchasing a parking space online in advance at Easton’s Beach in Newport. A parking pass is $40 per vehicle. There will be continuous, complimentary shuttles to and from the Show site (only 1.5 miles) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. If purchasing a ticket online, visitors can add a parking space to their shopping cart when checking out. Visitors who are local can also take the express Jamestown/Newport Ferry to the Show or take the Seastreak ferry from Providence or Bristol, Rhode Island. Both ferries drop off at Perrotti Park, just a short walk to the Show.

It encompasses over 14 acres of Newport’s famed waterfront and hosts hundreds of exhibitors, dealers and manufacturers, showcasing new powerboats and sailboats, as well as marine equipment, services and accessories. Yacht Show Season 2023 Kicks off with Cannes, Newport

Yacht Show Season 2023 is officially upon us as the Cannes Yachting Festival kicked off Tuesday and the Newport International Boat Show is set to go Thursday.

Two of international yachting’s most beautiful and popular destinations are playing their annual role of beginning the yacht show season. It’s party time in Cannes, with Newport soon to follow.

The Cannes Yachting Festival opened Tuesday. The festival, which runs through Sunday, features about 700 vessels at two ports.

“As has been the case every year, the Cannes Yachting Festival gets the season underway by unveiling an extremely eclectic offer.,” festival director Sylvie Ernoult said in a statement. “We are pleased to welcome 610 exhibitors and nearly 700 boats – one of our record – which includes 130 making their world debuts. Our visitors will be able to see the crème de la crème of the marine industry with not only the most famous shipyards and equipment manufacturers, but also newcomers to the industry, small companies or start-ups, who come to present their creations.”

Always diverse Newport will feature sailboats and powerboats alongside yachts, as well as all sorts of services and accessories. NFNP (Newport for New Products) decals will identify the 12 vessels and 20 marine products making their debut at Newport. On Thursday, industry experts will judge the NFNPs, with several categories to be awarded. Online voting is now underway for the show’s People’s Choice Award; that winner is scheduled to be announced on Friday.

“As we count down the hours to the start of the show, our entire team is filled with excitement,” Jocelyn Emory, the show’s marketing director, said in a statement. “The success of this event would not have been possible without the dedication of so many individuals, from our staff and operations, exhibitors, members of the press, sponsors, partners and the Newport community. From all of us involved in making this show happen, this will be one not to miss!”

Show organizers recommend anyone wishing to attend buy tickets in advance . They are also tracking the progress of Hurricane Lee but on Tuesday did not have any plans to cancel or postpone scheduled events.

Both shows are also championing various green initiatives  as the issue gains traction in the industry . Clean Ocean Access is acting as the Newport Boat Show’s “sustainability partner.”

COMMODORE’S CORNER

newport yachting season

Fellow Newport Yacht Club Members,

Here’s what’s happened since our last Burgee:

We were not able to hold Dock Day for two consecutive weeks due to weather, so the first good day our staff under the guidance of Rudy put our docks in place.

I am happy to report our Dock Loan was paid in full on April 11th, 9 years ahead of schedule but 1 year late of our goal. This means all voting members will be saving $900 in assessment fees. A special thank you to our Treasurer Morgan Everson for her work on this project as well as past commodores Tom Rowe, Betsy Green and their board of directors for their efforts to get this loan paid off early.

The two new member receptions were both well attended and very engaging. Welcome to all our new members, looking forward to your active participation in the Club.

Our General Membership Meeting took place on May 2nd and was standing room only. Four new members of the nominating committee were elected. Nick Pasyanos, Sara Mariani, Kate Wilson Somers and Tom Malott Jr. Congratulations and thank you for participating in this very important role for the Club. We also had the second reading of the bylaw change which allows for proxy and electronic voting. This was passed by an overwhelming margin.

Please be safe while working on your spring boat projects.

Best to you and yours,

Bob & Rosalie

VICE COMMODORE’S MESSAGE

“…We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea – whether it is to sail or to watch it – we are going back from whence we came…”

[Excerpt of Remarks at the Dinner for the America’s Cup Crews, September 14 1962] John F. Kennedy If you’ve ever speculated why we’re members of a yacht club, the excerpt above may explain it. For many of us, it is even more simple, getting access to the water and/or, connecting with other sailors/boaters with strong interests in water activities.

In response to member input to the strategic plan, the Fleet Captain and Regatta Chair have been working tirelessly on developing a schedule of activities so members can get regularly underway and experience the wonders of Narragansett Bay. A survey has been emailed to all members to determine the gauge as to what type of activities are desired for this summer. Please participate. It is a great opportunity to be actively involved in things you want to do as part of the “Club Fleet”. Additionally, as it has for many years, there is low intensity sailing on Tuesday and Wednesday nights hosted by the Regatta Committee.  This is a great way for members to get out on the water and participate in the sailing and in the follow-on “Grill Night”.

The strategic working group for facility has been scoping out various possibilities of how to gain more house capacity for our members.  This has been an historical challenge and has been visited many times in the past.  Hopefully, adequate options can be developed to address this significant issue and at a cost that is acceptable. Whatever the recommendation, this is a long-term project that will require Board of Directors agreement and membership approval before any solution is enacted.

In the near term, there will be a concerted effort to ready the clubhouse for this season both in repair and cosmetic projects. The exterior front of Club House is slated to be painted and the parking area closest to the wall edge is also being addressed. The Main Deck will have the hardwood floor refinished and carpet repaired, fire sprinkler piping painted, and ceiling tile replaced as needed.

The GM search working group composed of Vice Commodore FJ Ritt, Rear Commodore Chris Long, Past Commodore Mike Warren, Treasurer Morgan Everson, and Membership Chair Scott Walker, have been persistently reviewing candidates’ credentials and will be transitioning to the interview phase over the next few weeks.  Some members have expressed an interest in sharing their human resource expertise during this process. The working group will make every effort to involve those members.  We have had many applicants provide Cover Letters and Resumes and the working group is currently communicating with several of these candidates.

F.J. Ritt, Vice Commodore

NEW FEATURE: DO YOU KNOW?

Question: What is Newport Yacht Club’s connection to the 1870 America’s Cup?

newport yachting season

Our newly refurbished yardarm, part of NYC since 1977, came to NYC from the Newport Reading Room through the efforts of a Club member.  Prior to that, it is rumored that its origin is from the 1870 America’s Cup, first defender and winning yacht,  “Magic” (pictured to the left).

REGATTA COMMITTEE

Registration is now open on the Club website for Tuesday One Design and Wednesday PHRF racing.  Pricing is the same as last year and we’re looking forward to a full turnout!

In support of our races, we’ll be providing formal and fun training for race committee volunteers.  We started on Saturday, May 4 th when we hosted our first event on Race Committee Fundamentals for which we had 18 participants some of whom came from other clubs such as Ida Lewis and Edgewater.  The 9:00am to 3:00pm seminar was led by Mary Ellen DeFrias and Matthew Hill of US Sailing.  They began with classroom work, videos and discussion which took into account the anticipated increase in Bay traffic and ways to ensure safety for all.  Regatta Committee members were instrumental in organization and success, especially Jackie Dietrich who took the organizational lead and also baked cookies for all.  Al McCoy impressed with his version of an out-of-control J22, and he and James Houston provided enthusiastic support. We’re grateful to Rudy and Lynn for the setup and lunch and the seamless operation of the TV monitor.

newport yachting season

The first test of our Race Committee expertise will be on May 18 when Al McCoy, James Houston, Alan Renfrew and possibly one or two others will start the Twenty hundred Club “Three Bridge Fiasco” pursuit race, which involves any direction starts to three bridges taken in any order.  (We’re not at all confused!).  The Mitchell will follow soon after.

Now that we’ve whetted people’s appetite we’re planning on-the-water training / practice which will start on May 20 with Rudy as our driver / supervisor on “Volunteer” at 5:00pm.  We’re limited to about 5 or 6 people in total and initially will have to be quite selective, but we’re planning to have many similar practices and we’ll be sending out more details once the dates and events get finalized.

One last thing that highlights the support we have from the sailing community at large relates to Olie, the electronic starter box.  Despite a full charge it refused to operate and looked like it would have to be replaced.  We contacted non-member frostbiters, starting with Scott Chase who led us to Rufus Van Greusen of CAY Electonics, Portsmouth who are marine wiring specialists.  Rufus reconnected some stray wires and the good news is that our dear little orange bundle will be able to squall many more starts this season.  He also saved us the best part of $1,000, the price of a new one!  So if you need any electronics fixed you know where to go!

Alan Renfrew Chair, Regatta Committee

JUNIOR SAILING COULD USE YOUR HELP

newport yachting season

The goal is to keep the program affordable, so the fees charged do not cover the full cost of operating the program, requiring the raising of additional funds. Fortunately, through the generosity of donors, 15% of the campers who participated in the program last year received scholarships.  Scholarship donations are greatly appreciated; however, those donations are restricted specifically for scholarships and cannot be used for any other purpose.

Unrestricted donations are needed to help cover other program costs such as fleet maintenance, fleet replacement and increased costs for wages, fuel and insurance.

How can you help you ask? Easy, sponsor one of the Junior Sailing boats.  Simply decide on a name which could be your spouse, family, your pet, a favorite location. . . your choice and it will be placed on one of the boats in the Junior Sailing fleet.  Your generous $500 donation will go a long way to help keep the Newport Yacht Club Junior Sailing program one of the top programs on Narragansett Bay.

What will Sponsors Receive?

  • Personal Name, Business name or an appropriate name / saying on forward quarter of a junior sailing dinghy. (4” X 36” max)
  • Thank you note with picture of camper sailing in branded boat to be e-mailed to you.
  • Recognition on the public-facing home page of the NYC website.
  • Recognition in the NYC Burgee e-newsletter
  • On-water exposure – June – August. Approximately 60% of time on water in Newport Harbor 40% in East passage / Narraganset Bay.

Please feel free to contact the Junior Sailing Committee to sponsor your boat:

To qualify for a Series' award, a boat must be scored in a minimum of 5 races, and 1 of these races must be scored outside the vessel’s declared Racing District. Note that some Series Events have more than 1 race; it is races scored that count.

2023 Results

as of Sept 27, 2023

How to read the Series Results:

  • Per the CYCS Notice of Series , to qualify for a boat must be a CYOA Member and compete in 5 individual races across 3 events in at least 2 districts. For district awards, a boat must sail in 3 races across 2 events.
  • A boat's High Point Percentage overall score is determined by summing the top 5 points earned in the boat's top 5 races and dividing that by the total number of boats sailed against in those races - then multiplying by 100. Therefore, 5 first places earned over the season would equate to 100%. A tie breaker is determined by whomever sailed against the most boats. For districts, it is top 3 scores. Qualified boats are then ranked by the CRF Division ( the division listed on their CRF Certificate).
  • In the case where an Organizing Authority (OA) of an event choose to sail boats from different CRF Divisions against each other or not for race management purposes, where applicable the Corrected Time or Corrected Speed was instead used to rank boats against other boats in their CRF Certificate Division. Therefore, the starting class place earned at an event may differ than the division place for the series. Please note for the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, the ERR Handicap was removed for a boat's CYCS score.
  • The goal of the Series is to encourage friendly competition and find the best way to fairly compare results transparently. A great amount of time was taken to analyze these results and any questions can be directed to Kate Somers: kate @risingt.com
