Yacht Show Season 2023 Kicks off with Cannes, Newport

Yacht Show Season 2023 is officially upon us as the Cannes Yachting Festival kicked off Tuesday and the Newport International Boat Show is set to go Thursday.

Two of international yachting’s most beautiful and popular destinations are playing their annual role of beginning the yacht show season. It’s party time in Cannes, with Newport soon to follow.

The Cannes Yachting Festival opened Tuesday. The festival, which runs through Sunday, features about 700 vessels at two ports.

“As has been the case every year, the Cannes Yachting Festival gets the season underway by unveiling an extremely eclectic offer.,” festival director Sylvie Ernoult said in a statement. “We are pleased to welcome 610 exhibitors and nearly 700 boats – one of our record – which includes 130 making their world debuts. Our visitors will be able to see the crème de la crème of the marine industry with not only the most famous shipyards and equipment manufacturers, but also newcomers to the industry, small companies or start-ups, who come to present their creations.”

Always diverse Newport will feature sailboats and powerboats alongside yachts, as well as all sorts of services and accessories. NFNP (Newport for New Products) decals will identify the 12 vessels and 20 marine products making their debut at Newport. On Thursday, industry experts will judge the NFNPs, with several categories to be awarded. Online voting is now underway for the show’s People’s Choice Award; that winner is scheduled to be announced on Friday.

“As we count down the hours to the start of the show, our entire team is filled with excitement,” Jocelyn Emory, the show’s marketing director, said in a statement. “The success of this event would not have been possible without the dedication of so many individuals, from our staff and operations, exhibitors, members of the press, sponsors, partners and the Newport community. From all of us involved in making this show happen, this will be one not to miss!”

Show organizers recommend anyone wishing to attend buy tickets in advance . They are also tracking the progress of Hurricane Lee but on Tuesday did not have any plans to cancel or postpone scheduled events.

Both shows are also championing various green initiatives  as the issue gains traction in the industry . Clean Ocean Access is acting as the Newport Boat Show’s “sustainability partner.”

2022 PADDLE FOR ACCESS

  • Saturday, August 20, 2022
  • 8:00 AM 12:00 PM 08:00 12:00

The 5th Annual Paddle for Access hosted by Clean Ocean Access is a 3 mile or 6 mile paddle (SUP) around Goat Island in Newport, RI.

Clean water and healthy oceans are critical to fun ocean events, which is why we believe in a clean, healthy ocean that is accessible to all. Shoreline access limitations inspired the roots of our organization back in 2006 and to this day, it remains a critical issue of focus. Paddle for Access celebrates our work to monitor all 50 rights-of-way across Aquidneck Island and ensure everyone has access to the shoreline. The event also sheds light on many other issues that impact public access to the shoreline, including erosion, sea-level rise, invasive species, and long term shoreline planning. Sign up to participate or volunteer to help us achieve our goal to preserve and protect public shoreline access.

Los angeles dodgers | tyler glasnow to start dodgers’ season opener in south korea, yoshinobu yamamoto gets game 2, two of the dodgers’ high-priced offseason acquisitions will square off against yu darvish and joe musgrove of the padres next week in seoul.

newport yachting season

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The pitching matchups for the first regular-season MLB games in South Korea were announced on Monday. And they are expensive.

The Dodgers will start right-hander Tyler Glasnow in the first game on March 20 and Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the second game against the San Diego Padres on March 21. Glasnow signed a five-year, $136.5 million contract extension after the Dodgers acquired him from the Tampa Bay Rays in December. Yamamoto signed a record 12-year, $325 million deal in December despite not having pitched in the majors yet.

The Dodgers’ Seoul-mates, the Padres, will start Yu Darvish in the first game and Joe Musgrove in the second. Darvish and Musgrove each signed contract extensions with the Padres in the past two years for $108 million and $100 million, respectively.

“It means everything,” Glasnow said of being selected to front the Dodgers’ rebuilt starting rotation. “Just to sign here, that all being a reality feels crazy. Then when they told me I was the Opening Day starter, I definitely felt a lot of pride and excitement.”

It will be Glasnow’s second Opening Day start. He also started the 2021 opener for the Rays.

“First off, we feel both guys are top-end guys,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “But if you look at the schedule for Yoshinobu going out, it sets up more for potential days of rest.”

Yamamoto pitched just once a week throughout his career in Japan and has been on that same schedule this spring. He will make his third Cactus League start on Wednesday – his third consecutive Wednesday start.

“They are supporting me for me to maintain my regular routine from Japan and they’re giving me enough space to do that,” Yamamoto said through his interpreter.

“I’m having kind of a ‘Cloud Nine’ feeling. This is the first time they’re having opening games in Korea so I’m looking forward to performing at my best for Korean fans.”

The Dodgers will have six days off between the Seoul Series and their home opener on March 28. Roberts said Glasnow and Yamamoto will most likely repeat as the 1-2 starters for that series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

“I’m not the most sentimental person,” said Glasnow, a Santa Clarita native, of pitching the opener at Dodger Stadium. “I think I’ll try – I don’t like try to block it out but I’m very much like, ‘I’ve got a job to do. I’m here to pitch.’ I think my answer may be a different a few years later if you ask me. It’ll be, “What was that all about? How’d that feel?’ But right now, it’s like a normal season I’ve got to go pitch. It’s obviously different but if I keep it similar, keep it the same, I usually respond to it.”

MOVING OVER

Speaking to the media for the first time since the Dodgers announced Mookie Betts would be replacing him at shortstop, Gavin Lux said the series of misfired throws that prompted the change were not a product of “a throwing issue” but the result of rust from not playing for so long.

“I just haven’t played defense in a game since October 2022 … it’s more about that than anything,” Lux said. “It’s tough to replicate a game rep if you don’t play in games.

“I think I just need to keep getting game reps. Like yesterday was fine. And I think just getting out there and continuing to play, it’s knocking rust off more than anything. I don’t think it’s a throwing issue. I just need to keep going out there and playing baseball.”

Being moved back to second base was certainly a blow to Lux’s pride and ego, but he said that has to be put aside.

“Yeah, totally,” he said. “It doesn’t do any good for anybody to sit and mope around. Like we talked about, me and Mookie are getting out there early every single day, turning double plays, talking through stuff together. I think it’s that more than anything. There’s no other option. We have to move forward. The ultimate goal is to win games.”

There have been fewer signs of rust on Lux’s offensive game.

When Roberts announced the move to flip Betts and Lux, the Dodgers manager said options that would have left Betts at second and replaced Lux at shortstop with Miguel Rojas or Kiké Hernandez were dismissed because it would have taken Lux’s bat out of the lineup.

Lux started Cactus League play 9 for 26 (.346).

“I feel great offensively,” he said. “I thought honestly that was going to be more of the knocking rust off, getting your timing back, seeing pitches and all that. But honestly I don’t feel like I’ve skipped a beat too much on that. The Trajekt machine (a sophisticated pitching machine that simulates live at-bats) we have has helped a ton, just getting game at-bats with that and speeding that process up.”

TRAVEL PLANS

Roberts said Bobby Miller will be one of the 31 players traveling to South Korea. Miller will pitch in one of the Dodgers’ two exhibition games but won’t be on the active roster for the games against the Padres.

Right-handers Gavin Stone and Michael Grove will also be on the travel roster for Korea and could pitch in multi-inning roles out of the bullpen in those games. The two are competing to fill the fifth starter role until Walker Buehler returns sometime in May.

Left-hander James Paxton will not travel to Korea. He will stay in Arizona and continue building up for the season.

In Newport, it’s all about the Gilded Age.

Throughout this coastal Rhode Island town, many hotels recognize the glittered history through design and decor, while others are completely dedicated to the late 19th-century era of luxury and indulgence— The Vanderbilt portrays the latter.

Originally built by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt in 1909, the vintage Newport mansion was meticulously restored in 2018 to its former glory. “It is one of the few private homes in the era to operate for guests as a fully functioning and top luxury hotel in Rhode Island,” says Raphael Pazzini, general manager of The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection.

As the hotel’s become revered by guests and Rhode Island locals, alike, for its “flirtatious eccentricities” and “one-of-a-kind food and beverage programming,” Pazzini explains how The Vanderbilt has continued to expand its unique epicurean opportunities to enhance the overall guest experience and nurture a profound sense of connection between travelers and the enchanting Newport destination.

On March 7, The Vanderbilt unveiled their latest epicurean offering in collaboration with The Macallan as the hotel’s first-ever whisky tasting experience in The Reserve Room . “The Vanderbilt engaged with The Macallan... to ensure the accuracy and authenticity of the way the brand and services were depicted, and to provide additional education about the brand and its history. You will see these touch points reflected throughout the room,” says Pazzini.

Highlights of the room that Pazzini refers to as “an extension of the bar and living room at The Vanderbilt,” include a billiards table, whisky flights and a secret phone to use for ordering specialty cocktails (like the Carpenter’s Cure, a barrel aged Rusky Nail featuring The Macallan Sherry Oak 12 Years Old and barrel aged Drambuie or Blood on the Tracks featuring The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old, Blood Orange Cordial, Sweet Vermouth and Cherry Liqueur) as well as bookable whisky tastings , mixology classes and private group dinners.

Below, Pazzini delves into more detail about the collaboration, how guests can leisurely use the room beyond tasting events, as well as how the new, permanent offering will evolve with each season ahead.

Jillian Dara: How did the idea of creating The Reserve Room come about?

Raphael Pazzini: The Reserve Room was created to evoke the unique experiences guests can expect when visiting The Vanderbilt, that they cannot find anywhere else in Newport. In line with the property's identity as the social hub of Newport, The Reserve Room provides a convivial space for guests and locals to gather, enjoy the finest whisky, and experience unique, private whisky-forward experiences during their time at the hotel.

JD: When did you know you wanted it to feature The Macallan? What about the brand resonates with the hotel?

RP: We constantly aim to offer our guests the best in class, and The Macallan was a clear choice as it is one of the world's leading single malt whiskies, serving as an extension of our property's one-of-a-kind offerings. With a storied history of its own, The Macallan has built a product of outstanding quality and distinctive character, the perfect complement to The Vanderbilt's legacy as a vibrant social hub and luxury resort in the heart of Newport, Rhode Island.

JD: What about The Reserve Room is most unique to the property?

RP: The Reserve Room operates as an extension of the bar and living room at The Vanderbilt. What makes it so unique are the the "mystery experiences" and features offered to guests including: a selection of The Macallan whiskies exclusive to the room, specially curated bookable experiences only offered within the space, and the refreshed decor that is reflective of both The Vanderbilt and The Macallan's heritages.

JD: Why do you think it's so important to offer this type of amenity for your guests?

RP: As a cherished historical landmark deeply ingrained in the fabric of our community, we prioritize providing unique experiences for both our guests and locals alike. In line with other property experiences, the tasting room is designed to encourage social interaction and exemplify the brand's unwavering dedication to delivering meaningful and memorable moments.

JD: You mention that the room will be "open daily to guests and locals for exploration and use without a reservation" — what will this exploration entail?

RP: Guests are encouraged to make the most of The Reserve Room beyond scheduled tastings and experiences as a space for enjoying convivial moments. The Reserve Room allows guests to unwind with a game of billiards while savoring exclusive pours of The Macallan and discover hidden features designed to delight, including access to unique off-menu cocktails and more.

JD: Aside from The Reserve Room, how have the spirits and bar offerings at your resort evolved over the years?

RP: In 2018, The Vanderbilt was acquired by Auberge Resorts Collection to add to its portfolio of the world's best-loved boutique luxury hotels and resorts. As a nod to the property's history, the resort's cocktail program was revitalized, transforming the mansion into Newport's newest social hub and creating a menu inspired by 19th-century and modern-day Newport. The menu offers classic cocktails influenced by the property's notable history and the destination's historic landmarks. The one-of-a-kind menu playfully alludes to the area's bygone days, when Newport's Gilded Age mansions played host to extravagant parties. Libations take inspiration from regional mainstays such as The Belcourt, an elevated take on the Greyhound cocktail, or the Turkish Espresso, which pays homage to the voracious local demand for a refreshed take on the classic Espresso Martini. The property has woven its ever-evolving spirits program into the fabric of who it is, offering unique spirit-forward experiences and events throughout the year with its unforgettable Halloween bash, New Year's Eve soiree and more.

JD: Do you see a shift in guest's demand when it comes to spirits and bar offerings?

RP: We have seen a shift to those looking for immersive and unique F&B offerings that are elevated and continually evolve with the seasons. In addition to our hotel, transient guests, there is a strong local community hungry for elevated and unique offerings that only The Vanderbilt provides.
