Update: 49m Schooner Eleonora E Being Scrapped Following Collision and Sinking

Last June, we posted that the classic 49m schooner was struck by a 60m long search and rescue vessel in Port Tárraco, Tarragona, Spain, and subsequently sank. The search and rescue vessel Punta Mayor was maneuvering in the harbor and became stuck in reverse. The vessel struck Eleonora E at midships on the starboard side, crushing the schooner against a seawall.

Boat International reports that the yacht was left submerged for several weeks following the strike by a search and rescue vessel in June 2022. A refloating operation took place over the course of three weeks in September, and she was relocated to PTW-Shipyard in Tarragona where it was hoped she could be salvaged.

The water-damaged hull has since been moved to a scrapping facility in Vinaròs and the remains of the yacht are expected to be scrapped in the coming weeks.

Built in 2000, at the Van der Graaf shipyard in Holland,  Eleonora E  is a replica of the Herreshoff-designed Westward , one of the most famous racing schooners in the world which raced against yachts such as  Britannia  and  Lulworth  in the early 1900s.

This news is sad indeed. Eleonora E was a mere 22 years young. A painting of her predecessor sailing in The Solent hangs prominently in my living room.

The 49 metre sailing yacht  Eleonora E  has foundered after being hit by a 60 metre offshore supply vessel in Port Tárraco, Tarragona, Spain.

The yacht was moored when the collision took place. A major salvage operation has been underway to rescue the schooner, but according to eyewitness reports, she was completely submerged within thirty minutes of the collision.

The incident took place at 8.15am local time. The port authorities report that the supply vessel was attempting to manoeuvre when its engines became blocked while reversing. It hit  Eleonora E  on the starboard side, just aft of midships, while she was berthed in an area of water between four to five metres deep.

WATCH: Moment replica of Jersey's most famous sailing yacht is struck by a ship – and later sinks

eleonora yacht crash

A REPLICA of Jersey’s most famous sailing yacht has sunk after being struck by a ship while in port in Spain.

Eleonora E – a copy of TB Davis’ 160-ft schooner Westward – went down within half an hour after being hit by a supply vessel in Port Tárraco in Tarragona.

According to Superyacht News, the captain of the supply vessel attempted to prevent the collision by stopping the main engines, which had become blocked, and anchoring the vessel with both anchors.

eleonora yacht crash

No one was injured in the collision.

Westward, bought by Davis – a businessman and philanthropist – in 1924, became regarded as one of the most beautiful examples of naval architecture to ever grace Channel Island waters.

During the following years he raced the vessel at Cowes against King George’s Britannia and other Big Class yachts.

Davis died in 1942 and five years later Westward was deliberately sunk in the Hurd Deep off Alderney.

Thousands of people turned out to see Eleonora when it visited Jersey in 2010.

Almost 100 boats gathered off Corbière and Noirmont while hundreds of others waved from the shores as Eleonora made her way into the Harbour under full sail.

Schooner Eleonora E sunk after being hit by commercial ship

Eleonora

This is the horrifying moment that the Westward replica Eleonora E was struck by a commercial vessel in a Spanish port – and later sunk.

The 49.5-metre Van der Graaf schooner Eleonora E was reportedly struck by a 60-metre offshore supply vessel in Port Tárraco, Tarragona.

SuperYacht Times reports that the incident happened at 8am on 10 June, after a Maritime Rescue boat, the  Punta Mayor , “started her exit manoeuvre from the Moll de Costa in the port of Tarragona, when her main engines became blocked while she was in reverse. The crew stopped the engines and tried to anchor her with two anchors to stop her from moving”.

The boat could not be prevented from colliding with Eleonora E , which took on water and later sunk on her mooring.

There were apparently no injuries and no fuel pollution.

Eleonora has been available for charter from €70k per week and was on the market in recent years, priced at €7.9m.

Eleon

Eleonora  was built in 2000 at the Van der Graaf shipyard in Holland. She is a faithful replica, above and below decks, of Westward , which in 1910 was one of the most famous racing schooners in the world and sailed successfully against yachts such as  Britannia  and  Lulworth , winning numerous trophies.

Eleonora  raced in the Solent in 2015 as part of the fleet celebrating the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Bicentennial Regatta.

Eleonora ’s interior is traditional, following NG Herreshoff’s plans, panelled in mahogany. She sleeps eight guests in three double cabins and one twin cabin. The bathrooms are fitted out in marble. Each cabin boats climate control.

The boat was for sale following a major refit.

The Eleonora E. Sinks After Collision

Jun 10, 2022. The Eleonora E at 8.15 am, according to the Marina Port Tárraco authority, was struck by a 60-meter offshore supply ship, who was unable to reverse gear due to an engine failure. A huge open gash in her steel hull marked the sinking. Less than 30 minutes after the ramming, Eleonora E remained lying on the bottom of the port.

From devastating fires to shocking sinkings, BOAT rounds up the worst superyacht disasters from 2022...

49m superyacht 007 runs aground in Greece

In the early hours September 3, the 49 metre yacht 007 struck rocks in a small bay on the island of Kythnos, in the Cyclades island chain in Greece. She quickly began taking on water and listed steeply on her port side, jutting out above the waterline around 15 metres from the beach. Pollution prevention measures were put in place within 24 hours, but the yacht remains in the same position as of December 2022, prompting complaints from local residents.

39m superyacht My Saga sinks in Italy

One of the most dramatic yacht disasters of 2022 came when 39 metre My Saga sunk in the Ionian Sea off the coast of southern Italy. She was being towed when the incident took place, after sending out a distress signal in the early hours of the morning to report that she was taking on water. It’s still not clear how the incident occurred, but a representative from a local marina told BOAT International that the seafloor in this region is too deep for the yacht be salvageable. You can watch the moment My Saga sunk below.

59m yacht Idol collides with bridge in Italy

A less dramatic incident saw the 58.9 metre motor yacht Idol collide with a bridge in Pisa, Italy. The bridge typically has an elevation of 11.8 metres above sea level during low tide, but according to eyewitness reports, the yacht attempted to pass during high tide. Minimal damage was sustained.

49m Eleonora E sinks in Spain following collision

In June, the 49 metre Eleonora E sunk after being hit by an offshore supply vessel while she was stationary in the marina. Footage shows the offshore vessel hitting the yacht squarely on its starboard side, after apparently running into mechanical difficulties. Eleonora E remained in the port for several months, before a three-week salvage operation raised her from the seafloor and hauled her away for repairs.

45 metre motor yacht Domani flounders off Washington Coast

Around 45 miles from the coast of Washington, the 45 metre Benetti yacht Domani ran into difficulty. The US Coast Guard reported the yacht’s crew had been unable to close the transom door, resulting in flooding of the beach club that left her disabled and floundering. Emergency services were quick to respond, and the yacht was towed to nearby Port Angeles for repairs.

Brand new 45m superyacht Aria SF goes up in flames in Ibiza

Fresh from delivery from Italian yard ISA, the 45 metre Aria SF caught fire in a busy anchorage in Formentera, Ibiza. Eyewitness accounts reported smoke originating from the area around her main saloon, and within minutes the yacht’s superstructure was engulfed in flames. She was towed away from other yachts to prevent damage, and sunk close to Cap Martinet, in Ibiza. Local news have been reporting on the ongoing efforts to remove the yacht’s hull from its current resting place.

Yacht damaged by Coast Guard in alleged drug smuggling operation

In July, shocking images showed the result of a clash between a 27 metre superyacht named Belgor and a Coast Guard patrol vessel in Turkey. The incident is alleged to be part of a drug smuggling operation, with the Coast Guard attempting to investigate reports indicating the presence of drugs on board the yacht in Muğla, close to Bodrum. The yacht then attempted to leave the waters of Turkey and the Coast Guard pursued, before finally opening fire and ramming the yacht.

25m motor yacht sinks off Chub Cay in the Bahamas

A 25 metre motor yacht, believed to be a popular Ferretti Yachts 830 model, was spotted submerged off the coast of Chub Cay in the Bahamas. The yacht reportedly hit a shallow reef and sank quickly, in an incident that bore some similarities to the sinking of another 25 metre motor yacht in April 2021.

Fire destroys 27m Sanlorenzo superyacht in Valencia

In April, a fire destroyed a 27 metre Sanlorenzo SX88 model named Pesa in the Port de Valencia, on Spain’s eastern coast. Six separate fire crews were called to tackle the blaze and it was eventually distinguished — however it’s understood the yacht is a total loss. After 12 hours of burning, the yacht sunk in the port.

Yacht damaged in fire at the Ferretti shipyard in Cattolica

At the start of the year, a fire at one of Ferretti Group’s Cattolica shipyard caused significant damage to a motor yacht under construction. No-one was injured thanks to the “immediate implementation of safety procedures” and the cause of the fire is subject to an investigation.

Gallery: Eleonora – an owner’s story

  • November 15, 2023

There’s nothing like starting at the top. While some come to superyacht ownership in gradual steps up the size range, the stunning 49.5-metre schooner Eleonora is Zbynek Zak’s first yacht

This article on owning the remarkable 162ft schooner Eleonara is from the archives.

It started – as a purchase often does – with a charter. “I wanted to charter a classic with my wife, having retired from the business we were involved with at that time. We both like classic things, but this was our first large-yacht charter, so it had to be special,” recalls Zak.

The couple were introduced to Eleonora’s then-owner Ed Kastelein, who’d built the 49m yacht in 2000. “We signed up for a charter and few days later, Ed contacted me to say that the boat was available to buy,” he says.

eleonora yacht crash

It wasn’t quite job done – there was careful negotiation and due diligence, “and securing the experienced Ed as skipper for a six-month transition period”, says Zak. With Ed guiding them along the learning curve, they got to understand their new purchase, and it was proving a perfect match between yacht and owners. “In a world where everything is touchscreen and hi-tech with carbon-fibre spars, we wanted to experience sailing in the way it was done 100 years ago. The feel of real wood, holding the lines and sheets securing huge sails, and a classic-looking interior are hugely important,” says Zak.

He sees his role as custodian as much as owner: the yacht is a faithful replica of the famous schooner Westward , launched at the Herreshoff yard in the US in 1910.

“The great history was one of the key considerations when we purchased Eleonora ,” Zak says. One of the best-performing racing schooners in the world, Westward saw off the likes of Britannia , Lulworth and Meteor II in racing events. The modern yacht, steel hulled and wooden masted like the original, was built at the Van der Graaf shipyard in Holland. “The interior is made using old-fashioned carpentry skills, and wood, lots of wood!”

But as a custodian he is not an owner who treats his yacht as a museum piece – she has covered a lot of sea miles. “We have taken Eleonora all over the Western Mediterranean, to Scotland, Ireland, southern England and to the Caribbean on a couple of occasions,” he says. “In 2008 we spent the summer on the east coast of America, starting in Florida and spending a month sailing off Newport, RI. We came into New York harbour under full sail, sailing downwind towards the Statue of Liberty, where the US Coast Guard informed us we were too close to the historic landmark, but they also wanted to board us out of curiosity and interest!”

eleonora yacht crash

One of the highlights was a cruise down the west coast of Italy. “Sicily is a spectacular place – the wine, the food, the history. Syracuse is a great place to stay and Stromboli erupting at night-time is simply breathtaking from the deck of the yacht,” he says.

A visit to Venice also provided a highlight. “We were allowed to moor right in front of St Mark’s Square. It’s a spectacular place to visit. We left under a full set of sails down the main canal,” he says.

For all their great cruising adventures, he and his wife are equally happy with their local cruising grounds. “We live for part of the year in the South of France near Marseille and we like to visit the old port with Eleonora . It is always a special experience sailing in and out of this historical location,” he says.

Racing or cruising, Eleonora has proven an excellent choice. “She’s a fast racing machine, but is equally as comfortable cruising during holiday voyages. Some smaller classic boats are dayboats, but with Eleonora you can spend weeks cruising in great comfort. All the amenities are on board, including heating for Scotland and air-conditioning for warmer climates!”

With a full-width master, two doubles and a twin, the yacht sleeps eight and never feels crowded in cruising mode, and there are plenty of spaces on deck for guests to enjoy. “One of our favourite spaces on the boat is just in front of the wheel – an ideal spot for reading a good book. In the morning and evening we like to stay between the two masts. We set up a dining table and the atmosphere is just magical. We also occasionally lie on deck chairs just looking out to sea,” says Zak.

The yacht has been an occasional participant in racing events, including the Round the Island Race in the Solent. Although he calls himself “an absolute amateur” he clearly enjoys a turn at the helm. “Fortunately, we have a very experienced captain, tactician and navigator always on board for racing. The Corinthian spirit of these Big Class classics is very different to, say, racing J-Class. We do not pay salaries for rock star helmsmen and crew. Much of our race crew is made up of enthusiastic and skilled volunteers, typically our friends. The permanent crew is nine people. Add 30 or more race crew, and let’s go racing! I enjoy the logistical challenge of bringing it all together for the regattas,” he says.

For the 2012 Round the Island Race, Sir Ben Ainslie joined Eleonora . “At one point we were both holding on to the wheel. We had great fun and he is a very nice English gentleman. We were by far the largest of the 1,600 yachts, which made the start challenging, but eventually with a good breeze we made good time. As we were running through the Eastern Solent towards the finish line, the Isle of Wight car ferry slowed to let us pass. The locals on board told me this had never happened before! That left us with one tack to the finish line. We had the time of our lives.”

The Westward Cup on the Solent proved particularly memorable. “To have your boat on moorings just outside the Royal Yacht Squadron is a magical sight,” he says.

eleonora yacht crash

Retirement means that Zak and his wife spend three to four months on board every year, with racing limited to a few regattas. “We select well-organised regattas that include comparable-size classic boats, like Elena and Mariette . The owners of some of these are good friends and, of course, also well-respected competitors. In the past we have invited young members of the New York Yacht Club and the Royal Yacht Squadron to race on board with us. It’s a great opportunity to introduce young sailors to classic sailing – these are future hard-working crew members,” he says.

Otherwise, it’s just a case of choosing to be on board when the yacht isn’t on charter. “We love to entertain friends and share good food and wine,” says Zak. “Our French chef Patrick is exceptionally talented. My wife spends time in the galley picking his brains about different recipes, and we love to visit the local markets to help buy the fresh produce.”

This is certainly a yacht that’s appreciated in every aspect. When Zak says “by owning a yacht like Eleonora you are keeping history alive for new generations, preserving the legacy of being able to race a classic”, you sense the eye of someone who can appreciate the beguiling effect of the past in today’s furious modern world. But in the same breath he says: “Size does not matter in yachting. It is all about the fun and excitement of being on the water. You can have as much fun on a sail-board – it’s just that Eleonora allows for a greater number of people to be present and to have fun at one time. For me, owning Eleonora is a passion, not an expensive show-off hobby.” Never, in other words, has history been so much fun.

Accident report outlines details of 63m Utopia IV collision

The ntsb's accident report states that the collision was caused by an inadequate lookout….

Image for article Accident report outlines details of 63m Utopia IV collision

On 23 December 2021, the 63m M/Y Utopia IV was involved in a collision with the 49m tanker Tropic Breeze in the Bahamas. The tanker subsequently sank but, fortunately, no lives were lost, and according to various sources, the tanker’s cargo on board included ‘non-persistent materials only’.

While this accident could have been far worse, it should also be highlighted that the initial reports surrounding the incident were limited and somewhat insubstantial considering the gravity of it. A full accident report has now been published by the National Transport Safety Board.

On October 2022, SuperyachtNews published an article which involved an interview with one of the crewmembers who was on board at the time. The anonymous source spoke out against what they deemed to be injustices leading up to, and following on from, the incident.

eleonora yacht crash

The report revealed that M/Y Tropic Breeze was loaded with a cargo of 100,000 gallons of high-sulfur marine gas oil (MGO), 22,000 gallons of ultra-low sulfur MGO, 20,000 gallons of gasoline, and 8,500 gallons of liquid petroleum gas. The vessel also carried 6,000 gallons of ultra-low sulfur MGO as bunkers (vessel fuel). All but two cargo tanks were pressed up (full), and there was no ballast on board.

The accident report also noted that just before 22:00, the bosun on the Utopia IV turned his attention to recording the hourly log entries and navigation fix, leaving his back turned to the forward windows (the captain had not yet returned to the wheelhouse, having left at 21:48). About the same time, the Tropic Breeze’s master started toward his cabin, immediately aft of the bridge, to use the restroom. The accident occurred at 22:00:48.

eleonora yacht crash

Tanker Tropic Breeze, valued at $5.1 million, sank in 9,300 feet of water, and the lost cargo, valued at $343,881, was not recoverable. M/Y Utopia IV sustained damage including ruptured hull plating above and below the waterline, fractured framing, a compromised double bottom ballast tank, damaged bridge windows, and dislodged and damaged hatches, fittings, and equipment. Total damages were estimated at $2.4 million.

The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the probable cause of the collision between the yacht Utopia IV and the tank vessel Tropic Breeze was the Utopia IV’s wheelhouse crew not maintaining a proper lookout and therefore not identifying the tank vessel they were overtaking. Contributing was the Tropic Breeze's bridge team also not maintaining a proper lookout.

Was the Elenora given permission to be there & if so who gave it? They might be deemed at fault for putting a yacht in a position where damage might occur. Or the yachts owners at fault if they had been forewarned of the rescue ship about to undertake a difficult manouver & failed to be ready to move if needs be. I would put the blame partially on the port authority, or the yacht owner if I could. Was there any liability on the port Authority to have emergency tug services available. If so did they work? Then, of course the yacht is not new, so it needs to be valued. One also has to consider if the crew took reasonable action to save the vessel. Did the vessel have adequate pumps for emergency pumping, in the event of collision, thus being unsafe to start with? Were watertight doors closed , if they existed. Grounds for an insurance co to wriggle out of part of the cost, certainly delay things, I suspect.

Whatever the rights and wrongs, it’s heartbreaking to see such images of a truly beautiful vessel.

Be aware that it is quite possible that the supply vessel that clobbered Eleonora probably has relatively limited insurance - simply because they are allowed to do so. Eleonora's owners will have to claim off their Insurers, who might get only a small proportion back from the Insurers of the commercial vessel. But Kukri can explain this better. It is fortunate that Eleonora has a steel hull - I am thinking that if it was timber, the odds are that the supply vessel would have made a determined effort to slice her in half. @Daydream believer you cannot apportion any blame on the crew of Eleonora - they are not obligated to keep watertight doors closed while safely moored at a dock, and I very much doubt that they would have parked illegally there - they would have received specific instructions from the Port. And they were probably also required to take a pilot on board when they came into the harbour, and the pilot would have advised them where to moor. Changing tack, I was involved (re surveys on the cats that were clobbered) in the incident shown in this Facebook video (link below) - it happened here in Barbados in January, and shows an inter-island ferry barrelling (at about 8 knots) into a group of local day charter cats double berthed on the quay. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10159903124555148&id=741305147 One cat was a definite write off, one is (in theory) economically repairable, and the other two received lesser damages. However the ferry only had limited third party coverage - apparently only EC$ 1million (which is about US$ 350,000), and the total claim probably came to at least US$ 2 million. It is probable that the supply vessel that sank Eleonora only has limited third party insurance coverage - yet I am sure that she is worth a lot more. This advert for her near sistership Elena has her listed for sale in 2010 for 9 million Euros. Stemar said: Surely it's up to the captain of the supply vessel to ensure he can carry out whatever he's planning in a safe manner. If E is in the way, he should tell the harbour authorities to get her moved. The speed he hit E, if she hadn't been there, he would have hit the wall anyway. Click to expand...

…..and I thought I was cynical about insurance companies !!!

Was E a French registered boat. If so the use of fenders is strictly forbidden.. French cruising boats usually carry standard accessories, including:- radios, noisy, over active kids & dogs. But not fenders. ?
