The Viking 45 Open is a 45-foot open express sportfishing yacht that was produced by New Jersey-located Viking Yachts between 2004 and 2009. Based on the same modified V-hull as the Viking 45C, the 45 Open differs from its sibling yacht by exchanging a flybridge for a single-level, free-flowing command deck hosting a forward helm, a lounge space partially open to the elements and a generously sized aft-cockpit. Though no longer built as new by Viking, the 45 Open remains immensely popular on the used and charter markets due to its sporty profile, endless adaptability, tournament-ready fishing prowess and high-performance speeds.

Buyers of the 45 Open do not have to miss out on elevated piloting or reconnaissance, as this yacht can be equipped with a tuna tower provided by Viking subsidiary Palm Beach Towers. Yet piloting from the main deck will prove to be just as thrilling, as this boat features a centrally located helm station with three Murray or Bluewater helm chairs and excellent visibility out of a gin-clear wrap-around windshield. The dashboard comes equipped with electronics installed by Atlantic Marine Electronics, including Teleflex SeaStar steering, trim tab and bow thruster controls, Simrad autopilot, Furuno radar, NavNet sounder and Icom VHF radio for confident navigation as you seek out that elusive marlin. Behind the helm you will find a port-side L-shaped sofa in weather-proof upholstery, an optional cocktail table and a starboard side wet-bar console with a fridge, a sink and an icemaker. The entire command deck is protected from sun and rain thanks to a fiberglass hard top as well as tempered glass side windows, though a partially open aspect to the sides and rear gives this space a breezy and elemental feel.

Out back you will find a 119-square foot aft-cockpit lined in non-slip fiberglass with teak bright-work emphasizing the high-class craftsmanship of this fish-focused space. The cockpit features a transom door with a lift gate, fish boxes, an insulated livewell, a bait freezer, a rigging station, four flush rod holders, a Glendinning Cablemaster cord, optional Rupp outriggers, tackle trays, stainless steel cleats, access to the engine room and a floor plate for a rocket launcher or the fighting chair of your choice. Thanks to the Viking 45 Open’s compact main-deck layout, the cockpit also happens to be mere steps away from the helm, ensuring that the pilot can easily help out when it comes to hauling record-breaking billfish on-deck.

The lower-deck space on this yacht is subject to customization, but typically boasts a lobby with teak-lined surfaces, Amtico flooring, an L-shaped leather sofa to port and a surprisingly large open galley with Corian work surfaces, a Sub-Zero fridge, an icemaker, an electric hob and a combination microwave oven. There is also room down here for up to two cabins, including a port-side bunk room and an en-suite master stateroom to the bow with a queen-sized bed, maple-lined closets and plenty of hidden storage.

Benefiting from a low center-of-gravity and a hull with a raked entry and molded chines, the 45 Open offers a superbly balanced and dry ride across a range of conditions. A pair of 800MHP MAN 2848LE diesel inboard engines, meanwhile, provide top speeds of 34 knots and cruising speeds of 28 knots. At this lower pace you can expect a range of around 400 nautical miles thanks to a fuel tank holding 848 gallons of diesel, more than enough for extended fishing trips in the Gulf.

Accommodations

Grace on Water is a 4 State Room 3 Head Galley Up Layout that can sleep 8. As you board you will find wide walkways on the exterior, you can enter from either side of the pilot house. Here you will find the full lower center helm and leather bench sitting area with storage below. Just aft is the full-size galley with upgraded appliances, granite counter tops, as well as a custom pass through to the helm and dining area. From the helm to starboard you can go forward down the curved stairway, leading to the 3 Guest rooms and 2 heads, each with a full stand-up stall shower. Each guest room has hanging closets and televisions.

Aft of the Galley to port is the full-size dining table with 4 chairs, and to starboard there is a full wet bar with storage above and below. The main salon offers two large couches and a sitting chair as well as a flat screen tv.

From the rear of the salon, you can access the aft deck from the custom aft doors. At mid ship of the salon, the upper stairs will take you up a covered access to the flybridge, or you can head down a private staircase to the expansive master full beam stateroom with a walk around king bed, entertainment system, walk in closets, make up vanity with mirror, windows, and an ensuite full shower and bath. To starboard before you reach the master you will find the walk-in laundry and engine room.

The interior has an abundance of natural light from the large windows throughout, but there are blinds throughout when privacy is desired. The boat feels very open, spacious and clean.

The flybridge offers a bimini top with a full isinglass enclosure, making this a sun deck useable for cruising or entertaining in any conditions, there is a full center helm with three helm seats. Aft of the helm to port there is a L shaped couch with table and to starboard there is another couch, there is storage below both couches. There is also a wet bar and fridge to port. As you walk out the rear of the bridge, there is a spacious rear deck with sitting chairs, further aft you will find the davit.

The large bow area offers cushioned seating with storage below.

Luis, Were you also looking at a Cabo or Merritt or something? I don't think you can go wrong with a 45 Viking. Easy to handle yourself, good sight lines from the bridge and is usually dry. I say usually since most any sportfish can be wet in sloppy conditions (once on a 44 Henriques taking waves/spray over the bridge hardtop it wa so snotty out). Vikings hold their value well and are good fishing machines. You may run across different power options, but if you can take one that has a common rail setup on the diesel engines (like the newre MAN engines and others). They will run better, smoke less, less vibration and more economical. Good luck.

I owned a 45' Viking SF in the Great Lakes. Great boat, good sea boat, never in anything bigger than 8' but no sweat. Hull is bullet proof.

I own a 90 45c that was just surveyed for insurance renewal. The surveyor said my boat was dry as a bone and he rarely ever sees an issue with any Viking. Anyway, we have been any tons of nasty water, have had many different boats over the last 25 years, and this is the safest, most comfortable, best quality boat we have ever owned. I will never own anything else.

This tiny South Jersey town has built stunning boats for 60 years at Viking Yachts

BASS RIVER TOWNSHIP - At 4 p.m., the workday is over for the 1,500 or so craftsmen at the Viking Yachts boat works. The line of cars waiting to make a left out of the factory parking lot onto Route 9 is long enough to require a police officer to direct traffic.

Of course, it wasn't always this way. Nothing rarely is. Greatness doesn't often start out great. Viking Yachts, now celebrating its 60th year in business, invested a ton of blood and sweat equity to summit the proverbial top of the luxury boat builder's mountain.

"We were the laughingstock of the industry. Originally, I didn't think we'd survive," recalls Rudy Dalinger, an 80-year-old German immigrant who hasn't shed his thick accent or long hair tied in a ponytail — now silvery grey.

Dalinger, who is Viking's new product development manager, was one of the first craftsmen hired by Bill and Bob Healey in 1964 when the two brothers purchased the ailing Peterson-Viking boat company. Three years before, the Healeys had built a marina with a vision of adding condos to their spot on the Bass River in the Pinelands, an out-of-the-way place in the 1960s. It still very much is.

The condo plan did not pan out. Instead, they became boat builders.

Building better boats

The center of the boat building business then was Egg Harbor City. When the Healeys bought out Peterson-Viking they brought the company's boat fixtures north to their marina in New Gretna and set up in the dirt-floor warehouse that was used for storing boats. Then they went to work.

Dalinger was hired in September for $2.10 an hour, five months after the acquisition. A carpenter by trade who built his own home and had formerly built hulls in Egg Harbor City, Dalinger worked with an initial small crew of about a dozen boat builders. Their first boats were 37-foot wooden yachts with teak cockpits and hand-painted hulls.

Sometimes referred to as "brains and brawn," Bob Healey was the attorney and Bill Healey was the hands-on construction guy and a hard-nosed former marine. Bill was in there everyday, covered in sawdust with them. He was at the door to shake everyone's hand at the end of the day, too.

"We started with nothing. He'd keep asking us, 'what do we need to make it easier, to build a better boat," Dalinger said. "And he went out and got it. Table saws, routers, planes, sanders. They may have been second-hand or bought at auction, but they worked."

And that became the Viking Yacht modus operandi: to build a better boat everyday. They made it through the 1960s. The company's first major milestone came in 1971 when they launched a fiberglass 33-footer. The next year Viking made its industry mark with the 40-foot Sedan Convertible, which remained in production for 16 years, selling more than 600 models. Nobody was laughing at Viking anymore.

"We made our breakaway from Peterson-Viking then. Their boats had all been wooden. When we came out with the 40 footer, that really rocketed us up," said Pat Healey, Bill's son and the CEO and president of Viking Yachts.

Viking Yachts enjoyed smooth seas for most of the 1980s, bringing in top talent like Lonni Rutt at the end of the decade, who was building nuclear subs for a government contractor in Newport News, Virginia, before joining Viking Yachts. He was part of the core design team responsible for building the modern Viking sportfishing yachts beginning in the mid-1990s.

"They had just finished the first expansion, the first expansion of the buildings, what we call our old lines 2, 3 and 4. They had just added the beginnings of the mill." Rutt said.

Luxury tax flops

Then Congress and the George H.W. Bush administration introduced a luxury tax in 1991, seeking to hit the rich a with 10% surcharge tax on purchases over $100,000. The luxury-boat building business grounded on a shoal. Rather than create $9 billion in tax revenue, the rich stopped buying, and the tax cost production workers their jobs.

In 1990, Viking sold 90 boats. When the tax went into effect, sales dropped to 32. A year later, the company sold just 12 boats. Rutt and many of the craftsmen who worked at Viking were temporarily out of work.

Enter Bob Healey's talents. He took the fight to Washington, busing in unemployed craftsmen and got national attention on the issue by burning a boat on a barge in Narragansett Bay. Two years after the tax was introduced, it was canned by Congress and President Bill Clinton.

"I watched as my father had to lay off people that had been here 15, 20 years for something that was completely out of our control," Pat Healey said.

By 1994, Viking Yachts was back on the ascent. Pat Healey, who was out on the front lines at the boat shows and winning at prestigious fishing tournaments, showcased a 55-footer in 1997 that sold 115 models in five years. The Healeys would soon vertically integrate their business.

Wind in their sails

Fast forward to today and they've has grown into eight different companies in several states that form the Viking Marine Group. Their subsidies include Princess Yachts America, Palm Beach Towers and Atlantic Marine Electronics — the latter two allows them to deliver a fully outfitted luxury craft. They've added another boat works called Valhalla just a few miles away in Egg Harbor City on the Mullica River.

All told, they employ 2,005 people. Their New Gretna headquarters has over 880,000 square feet of manufacturing space and production line nearly a quarter-mile long making boats from 38 to 90 feet. The Mullica River plant has 106,000 square feet of manufacturing space, and makes center consoles from 28- to 46-feet in length.

These are no modest watercraft. Prices can range anywhere from $300,000 for a 28-foot Valhalla Bay boat to $12.5 million for the 90-foot Viking.

Since 1964, they've sold 5,500 boats. Bob has since passed away and Bill is retired. The future of the company lies in the hands of Pat and his three adult children. And they're in it for the long haul.

"We're all in. Totally committed," Pat Healey said.

Two victims identified after deadly boating crash in Port Aransas Ship Channel

The Nueces County Medical Examiner's office has released the name of two people who died in a boating accident that happened over the weekend in the Port Aransas Ship Channel.

The victims were identified as 50-year-old Colin Ocker and 25-year-old Jared Dale Hunt.

The U.S. Coast Guard Heartland announced through a news release published on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook social media accounts on Sunday morning that it had suspended an active search for a boater who had been missing in the vicinity of Aransas Pass since the crash happened early Saturday morning.

Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi watch standers received a call around 5:28 a.m. on Saturday via VHF-FM channel 16 when a good Samaritan reported a collision between a recreational vehicle and a commercial tanker, the release stated.

Watch standers issued an urgent marine information broadcast and directed the launch of an MH-65 helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi and a 29-foot Response Boat from Coast Guard Station Port Aransas to begin searching, the release states.

Rescue crews from the Coast Guard and local partners searched by air and sea for about 44 combined hours since the initial report and covered more than 127 square miles.

The news release published Sunday morning stated that a good Samaritan and a pilot boat recovered three people in the water, one of whom was dead. Two of the riders were transferred to Emergency Medical Assistance.

Rescue crews involved in the search included the Coast Guard Corpus Christi, Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi, Coast Guard Station Port Aransas, Coast Guard Cutter Manta, Texas Parks and Wildlife, the Aransas Pass Police Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Port of Corpus Christi Police Department.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Boat carrying 45 refugees capsizes off Yemen

Only four survivors have been located after a boat carrying at least 45 people capsized off the coast of Yemen, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The agency announced the incident on Thursday, saying the boat had overturned the previous night off the coast of the Taiz governorate. It cited “strong winds and overloading” as the cause.

“This highlights the perilous journeys between Yemen and Africa,” the agency said in a statement on X.

It added that it was working with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and partners to assist survivors and “address protection needs”.

No further details were immediately provided and it was not clear from where the boat had originated.

The waterways between Yemen and the Horn of Africa have become a common route for refugees and migrants travelling in both directions. The area saw a spike in Yemenis fleeing the country after a civil war broke out in 2014.

Houthi rebels and government forces reached a truce deal in April of 2022 that has resulted in a decrease in violence and the easing of the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Meanwhile, some of those fleeing conflict in Africa, particularly in Somalia and Ethiopia, have sought refuge in Yemen or have sought to travel through the country to the more prosperous Gulf countries. The route remains one of the “busiest and most perilous” migration routes in the world, according to the IOM.

Last year, 97,000 migrants arrived in Yemen from the Horn of Africa. That far outpaced the 2023 figures of 73,000 migrants arriving in Yemen.

The journey is often deadly. Since 2014, the IOM has recorded 1,860 migrant deaths and disappearances along the route.

In June, at least 49 people died and 140 went missing after their vessel capsized off the Alghareef Point in Yemen’s Shabwah governorate.

The boat had departed from Somalia carrying 115 Somali nationals and 145 Ethiopians, according to the IOM. Six children were among the dead.

At least 62 people died along the same route in two shipwrecks off the coast of Djibouti in April.

Surfing made its Olympics debut at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Games in 2021, but this year, the sport is already making waves with a first-of-its-kind floating Olympic Village, where the surfers will sleep at sea and wake up with pristine ocean views in French Polynesia for the 2024 Paris Games.

Social media has been overflowing lately with athlete POV videos showing off everything from team gear clothing hauls from Nike, Ralph Lauren and Skims to room tours testing out the infamous recyclable cardboard beds at the Paris-based Olympic Village. But when it comes to the accommodations for the oceanic-based sporting event in French Polynesia, it appears some of those athletes have already struck gold before they ride the iconic Tahitian waves at Teahupo'o.

One such video from first-time German Olympian Tim Elter that showed off his suite on the Aranui 5, the dual-purpose passenger and freighter ship that is housing the surf competitors, has amassed nearly 2 million views on TikTok.

"We got asked a lot about the cardboard beds in the floating village in Tahiti," Elter says in the video, while panning across the panoramic view from his balcony overlooking the striking blue water and lush green island before walking into the bedroom. "We don't have cardboard beds. We actually have real, aluminum bed frames that are solid and stable -- so yeah, we've got it better than the guys in Paris."

The Aranui 5 reflects Polynesian heritage throughout its interior and features 103 spacious cabins, eight guest decks, an outdoor swimming pool, a spa, a gym, a restaurant and lounges, according to Aranui Cruises . The custom-built vessel is anchored less than 45 minutes from the big wave competition site at Teahupo'o, where surfing will get underway on Saturday, July 27.

Team New Zealand's Saffi Vette, 22, shared another video of the ship on TikTok , with Michael Jackson blasting aboard as she and the team of Kiwis arrived to the floating Olympic village by dinghy.

"POV: German team welcomes you into the Olympic villa...ge," she wrote in text overlaid in the video.

In a follow-up selfie video taken on her balcony that has so far garnered 7.4 million views and counting, Vette and her fellow Olympians are seen laughing and dancing to Gotye's hit, "Somebody That I Used to Know."

"Vibes are high here on our floating Olympic Village," she wrote in the caption with a laughing face and heart hands emoji.
