Bad Weather Guarantee

While South East Queensland enjoys great year-round weather we do have the occasional rainy day.

We will happily reschedule your sailing day to avoid rain and bad weather.

See the FAQ for more information.

How much does a private yacht charter cost?

It only depends on the private yacht charter duration in hours. For example, we do from 2 hours to 10 hours for day charters. It does not matter how many guests you bring with you.

What is a private yacht charter?

A private yacht charter is where you hire the whole yacht. Only the people you invite as guests are onboard with you, along with the crew.

How long does a private yacht charter take?

It depends on which cruise you select. We do from 2 hours to 10 hours and we do overnight and multi-day cruises.

How many people can I have on the private yacht charter?

You can have up to 12 people. The yacht is roomy and easily takes 12. We also do much smaller sizes with sometimes couples and smaller groups.

What if we have bad weather?

While South East Queensland enjoys great year-round weather we do have the occasional rainy day. We will happily reschedule your sailing day to avoid rain and bad weather.

Can we do catering on our private yacht charter?

You can BYO or we have catering platters charged on a per person basis.

Can I BYO alcohol on our private yacht charter?

Yes, alcohol is BYO.

Will we be sailing on our private yacht charter?

Yes, we always sail whenever we have wind.

What if it is too windy on the day of our private yacht charter?

We can adjust the sails in four settings. Reducing sail area reduces the wind force on the yacht. If a strong wind warning is forecast, we will contact you to reschedule.

What if the wind is blowing into our preferred destination on the day of our private yacht charter?

If the wind is blowing into your destination's anchorage at more than 10 knots it will not be possible to do watersports. Therefore we will either suggest an alternate destination or discuss a reschedule with you.

Boat Hire in Brisbane

Brisbane has a reputation for being ‘the relaxed city’. Relax you shall, when you have such a vibrant blend of nature and culture at your doorstep. From luxury yacht charters on the Brisbane River to exciting rooftop bars, fine dining establishments and arts and cultural events, Brisbane is a city of experiences for all.

yacht brisbane hire

With more than 280 days of sunshine on average each year, Brisbane could just rely on the idyllic subtropical climate of South East Queensland. Or perhaps the friendliness of the locals.

But there’s so much more to the River City than meets the eye. It’s one of the world’s greenest cities, with more than 2000 parks to discover. In recent years, five-star hotels and urban resorts have popped up all around the city. The restaurants, bars, art galleries and nightlife are world class, as are the day trip opportunities to places like Moreton Bay, North Stradbroke Island and even the Gold Coast. There’s truly something for everyone of all ages.

At Floatspace, we believe boat hire in Brisbane is the best way to fully make the most of one of Australia’s most beautiful and diverse cities.

Boat hire in Brisbane for any budget, for any occasion

Boat rental in Brisbane is a natural choice for everything from intimate sunset cruises along the Brisbane CBD skyline to luxury yacht charters for special events or island exploring.

Floatspace offers a range of boats that can be tailored to all kinds of occasions on the water. Bookings include birthday party cruises, Christmas party cruises, team building sailing days, family day trips, hens and bucks parties, engagements, weddings, corporate events - all kinds of memorable experiences.

Hiring a boat is easy, flexible and can be done on all kinds of budgets. For example, Floatspace has exciting luxury yacht charter options like Curlew Escape , based in Moreton Bay. From $350 an hour, this boat has capacity for 14 guests, making it an affordable way to experience the magnificent islands if you’re up for sailing adventure, swimming, snorkelling or bushwalking. Perfect for small groups.

For birthday or business event boat hire, Pure Adrenalin is a 'wow factor' catamaran with two huge decks for entertaining. From $350 per hour, you can fit up to 76 guests for cocktail functions, Christmas parties or any other exclusive event.

When you hire a yacht in Brisbane with Floatspace, you can choose to BYO food and drink, book BBQ boat hire or even select a fully catered food and drink package in advance (catering to various dietary requirements).

Every Floatspace boat has a qualified captain and crew on board to help make that experience perfect and stress-free.

Things to do in Brisbane by boat

Let’s start with the Brisbane River. Few cities are as lucky as Brisbane to have weaving waterways providing a diverse array of backdrops, including the City Botanic Gardens, the Kangaroo Point Cliffs and South Bank Parklands.

Hop on at South Bank and sail under the Story Bridge during cocktail hour, followed by dinner at the trendy Howard Smith Wharves converted shipyard-turned-dining precinct.

Every September, the Brisbane Festival lights up the city with arts and cultural experiences. One of the highlights to see by boat is the Brisbane Riverfire, the spectacular fireworks show from Story Bridge to Goodwill Bridge and across the city’s skyscrapers.

For coastal adventures, sail along Brisbane’s Bayside. On the north side, the laidback seaside towns of Sandgate, Brighton and Shorncliffe are perfect for lazy days on the water or more revved-up watersports action. Boat hire in Redcliffe is a great way to explore the waters of Moreton Bay, with views of Bribie Island and Moreton Island.

On Brisbane’s southern coast, visit Manly Boat Harbour, the largest boat harbour facility in the southern hemisphere, and enjoy the local village’s bounty of seafood. The nearby Redlands Coast, including charming Redland Bay, is a stunning gateway to North Stradbroke Island and the secluded Southern Moreton Bay Islands.

North Stradbroke Island ('Straddie') is a local favourite. With kangaroos, kookaburras and koalas around you, and whale watching from May to November, it’s a wildlife paradise. Visit Brown Lake and Blue Lake, two stunning waterways sacred to the Quandamooka people.

Moreton Island is a must-see with its stretches of sandy beach, lush bushwalks and native wildlife of the Moreton Bay Marine Park. Float around the waters of Tangalooma Beach on an inflatable toy or go underwater for a diving or snorkelling adventure around the colourful corals of the world-famous Tangalooma Wrecks. Dolphins, dugongs and sea turtles call these fine waters their home.

Going all out? Take a private Brisbane to Gold Coast cruise around remote islands, white sandy beaches and those epic multimillion-dollar homes. Visit our Gold Coast boat hire page for more.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Brisbane

At Yachting.Rent, we provide an array of premium boats that promise a memorable sailing experience in Brisbane, Queensland. However, one question we often encounter is – should you choose a sailing boat or a catamaran for your nautical adventure? The answer depends on your specific needs, preferences, and sailing experience.

Sailing boats are traditional, romantic, and provide a pure sailing experience. They’re often preferred by sailing purists for their responsiveness and deep-sea capability. A sailing boat will lean into the wind and allow you to feel every shift in the breeze. They’re perfect for navigating Brisbane River, where their narrow beams and deep keels make them ideal for tight maneuvers. Sailing boats we offer vary in size and design, allowing you to find one that matches your skills and requirements. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor looking for a responsive vessel or a beginner looking for a leisurely cruise, we’ve got a sailing boat for you.

Catamarans, on the other hand, offer stability, space, and speed. Their dual-hull design makes them incredibly stable, reducing seasickness. They’re renowned for their spacious living areas, making them perfect for groups and families. You can enjoy a sunny day out on Moreton Bay with a BBQ on the deck or relax in the comfortable indoor areas. Their shallow draft allows you to navigate closer to the shore and explore areas a sailing boat might not reach. Our fleet of catamarans includes various sizes and models, providing a unique blend of comfort and performance.

In conclusion, both sailing boats and catamarans offer unique benefits. Your choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran for your Brisbane adventure should reflect your sailing proficiency, the size of your group, and your desired experience. At Yachting.Rent, we’re here to assist you in making that choice. We ensure a personalized experience, matching you with a vessel that complements your skills and caters to your needs, promising an unforgettable sailing journey in the enchanting waters of Brisbane, Queensland.

Things to do in Brisbane by boat

Let’s start Brisbane yacht rental cruise with the Brisbane River.

If you are planning an event on the waters of the Brisbane River,

Here are some tips to make your occasion more enjoyable. .

  •  Time of Year – Firstly, know which time of the year you want to book a luxury boat charter on the Brisbane River. Weather plays a big part in the type of experience you are seeking. For instance, during peak summer, it’s often hot and humid, and rain can be frequent and heavy. During the winter, it is drier; however, the evenings can be cold. Fortunately, you don’t have to let the rain bother you too much. Our yacht has many indoor spaces for you to enjoy and the Sun Room and spacious Saloon are completely weather-proof.
  • Food and Drinks – With our commercial-size kitchen,  you can hire a caterer and enjoy professionally-prepared dishes. Or, you can throw some snags on the BBQ and chat as you share a casual lunch together.  We have all the platters, plates and cutlery you could possibly require so there is no need to bring any plastic plates or utensils onboard during your luxury boat hire.
  • Time of Day – Do you enjoy the sunset and the stars or want a warm day for swimming and sun-bathing on the bow of the MV Baroness? You may choose to enjoy the sunset with bubbly and light snacks to watch the lights of  Brisbane City and sneak a peek inside the waterfront mansions as you cruise the river under the stars.  The MV Baroness is well-lit for socialising under the stars with twinkling bistro lights on the Bow and Back Deck.
  •  Swimming – Only on a day trip to Moreton Bay can swimming be permitted. The size of the MV Baroness makes it difficult to anchor too close to land so swimmers must be proficient.   The MV Baroness has a swim mat onboard and range of floatation toys for guests to enjoy.  There is also a HUGE water Trampoline available.  Ask our booking agent Janine about it.

How can Baroness Classic Charters help you?

There are many ways for you to use our well-appointed luxury yacht:

Corporate Events : Plan your next corporate event on a chartered boat. Having your corporate event on a luxury yacht will not only impress your guests, but it will offer your staff a VIP experience in which you can show them how much they mean to the functioning of your company.

Parties and Special Occasions : You can also use a yacht for special occasions such as an engagement party, a wedding anniversary, a wedding, or even a hens or bucks party. Not only will the setting and the views impress your guests − but having this as your background for your photos will be pure magic.

Family Fun Days : Another option is to charter a yacht simply to unwind. Once onboard, you can enjoy a sunset and a few drinks with friends and family.

Memorials : Did your dear departed love the water and the river?  It may be fitting to celebrate their life with an ash scattering or memorial on the Brisbane River waterways  We allow one-hour cruises for these event and they are priced at $1,000 per hour for up to 100 guests.

What our customers say ...

My family and I chartered the Seawind 1260 for 5 nights in Moreton Bay and have nothing but good things to say about the experience. I have limited experience sailing but with Bazza’s training it was really easy to sail anywhere and if i did have a question Bazza and Kerry were more than happy…

Our family have chartered with Moreton Bay Holidays Afloat a number of times now and we have always found them to be amazing people to deal with. The boats are in perfect condition and are beautifully presented. The support you receive from Kerry and Bazza is second to none. Exploring Moreton Bay on a Seawind…

We were very impressed with Moreton Maiden, the new-to-us cruising area of Moreton bay and the wonderful hosts. As long term sailors, and now frequent bareboat charterers, we would say Moreton bay holidays afloat have by far the best kept boats and the loveliest hosts that we have experienced in Australia!

Chartered Moreton Maiden with a group of 20 friends and family for the day. Very easy to organise with the company, good communication, professional experience, and a really hassle free day. Craig and Barry were great captain and Co captain. All guests commented on what a wonderful day it was. Couldn’t recommend this mob highly…

Craig provided a great experience for me and my international guests. We thoroughly enjoyed fishing, bbq, sailing and snorkling at the wrecks off Moreton Island.

As a frequent guest on charters previously run by the new owners of this marina I can highly recommend this business. Kerry and Bazza have many years of experience in yachting hospitality and you will not find a more knowledgeable captain than Bazza ! Kerry is a fantastic chef and all around seasoned professional when…

Brisbane Reviews

February, 2021

Life is made up of moments that are truly hard to forget! My partner provided me with one of the best birthday presents anyone could ever ask for. I was under the impression we would be staying in an air bnb but when we arrived at a luxurious property and the gate drew back, my surprise took a turn and I quickly realised this was not the place I would be staying. The walkway down to the boat made me very giddy indeed as this was not something you experience every day. We were met by Grant and Carolyn all dressed in boating regalia and the tone was quickly set by their wonderful greeting and eagerness to provide a first-class service. This tone didn’t drop an iota throughout the trip. Every single detail was meticulously planned and I felt like I was royalty for the weekend. The Yacht itself was decadent and opulent beyond what thoughts I could muster. My partner and I did not have to worry about anything at all on the yacht as we were waited on hand and foot by these wonderful people. I have worked in hospitality for the majority of my life and I believe my standards have always been high
..these guys blew it out of the water
..and then some. You have the choice to do exactly as you please and they facilitate all that you require. We got to jump from the top of the boat and go swimming, we visited an idyllic isolated island and had a champagne picnic and we were treated to one of the best meals I have ever had and Grant and Carolyn had just themselves to organise such a ridiculously mouth watering meal. Such was the decency and salt of the earth nature of these guys that we asked them to join us for a few drinks in the evening and we had an absolute blast with them. Top shelf spirits and wines were all part of the package and you really did feel like you would never get an experience like this ever again. I can’t speak highly enough of what this trip meant to us and given the opportunity; we will be embarking on such a voyage in the near future. This trip would not have even been close to what it was without the decency, generosity and kindness that the hosts provided all the way through.

We had an excellent trip with Carlo who took me and wife around Sydney Harbour and Rose Bay for our wedding anniversary. He helped cook our food and made the day special for us. The boat was clean and had all the necessarily facilities, including a lilypad and a stand up paddle-board to use

September, 2022

We had such a blast for my sister's Hen party. The boat was spacious for our 11 person group and the harbor was amazing! Alex, our skipper, was so friendly and helpful and got us through the harbor safe and sound! We would absolutely book again, it was the highlight of our trip.

March, 2022

Juliet was fantastic to work with when organising the charter! We had a fantastic afternoon with our skipper, Tom, who brought a great presence on board - and manned the BBQ. The boat was lovely with great amenities, even having salad dressings available. Everything was clean and well cared for, and we got to see the best of Sydney harbour on our sail. Thanks to Juliet and Tom for an amazing afternoon!

Brisbane Yacht Charters

Bareboat Charters

A bareboat charter on Moreton bay is a unique sailing holiday designed for either families or a small group of friends.

A bareboat charter is bare of crew but fully equipped to sail, lodge and cook for two to ten people. Not surprisingly, you must meet certain qualifications before your allowed to sail away with our catamaran! We require you to fill out a sailing resume to demonstrate your ability to handle the yacht, the weather conditions and the various systems aboard. We’ll also need to see a physical demonstration of your skills upon arrival.

In practical terms, you should have a reasonable amount of recent coastal cruising experience in a yacht more than 25 foot long (this need not be a boat you own however). For lesser experienced customers, we can provide a sailing assistant for part of your charter. This removes the responsibility and stress away from your shoulders and places it on the skipper. Over the years, this approach has worked exceptionally well with guests able to relax more and enjoy their holiday around Moreton Bay.

With so many outdoor activities to keep you entertained and a vast number of secluded anchorages to explore you’ll be struggling to fit everything in. Moreton Island National park is a popular destination offering guests natural beauty at its best. Try your hand at snorkeling around the Tangalooma wrecks while feeding the fish by hand or throw the crab pots over the side and catch the evening’s entre, complementing your BBQ dinner on the back deck of Aristocat.

Heading to the southern end of Moreton, a climb up the Big Sand Hills offers views all the way across to the Pacific ocean and for those adrenalin junkies try your hand at sand tobogganing.

As an alternative, your bareboat charter might have you head south and enjoy the peaceful anchorages offered towards South Stradbroke. After an interesting sail through the winding channels along the inside of South Stradbroke, enjoy some swimming and fishing around Jumpinpin and the popular Bedrooms anchorage. A little further south, Southport offers a great anchorage where guests can take a short walk across to a patrolled surf beach, explore the popular Surfers Paradise and dine at Marina Mirage.

A bareboat charter includes: a unique sailing holiday, marine park fees, RIB dinghy, dinghy fuel , gas, 2 x paddle boards, snorkeling and sporting equipment.

3 day/2 night bareboat charter from $4,050 .

4 day/3 night bareboat charter from $5,000 .

5 day/4 night bareboat charter from $5,750 .

6 day/5 night bareboat charter from $6,900 .

The most fabulous yachts to charter this summer

jalopnik

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts — vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea in 2024

Image for article titled The most fabulous yachts to charter this summer

As summer reaches its peak across the Northern Hemisphere, it’s hard to imagine a better way of spending a vacation than channeling your inner ship captain and sailing across the ocean.

In recent years, yacht companies have reported a boom in sales — far from the decline that many in the industry feared, due to both the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic realities of the Russia-Ukraine War.

“I spent my days [in 2020] doing worst-case scenarios and drawing up the budgets to go with them,” Giovanna Vitelli, chairwoman of Azimut|Benetti, the world’s largest yacht manufacturer, told the Economist in 2023.

Instead, her company reported a 23% growth in production value in 2023 —a reality that is not unique to just one yacht manufacturer. The luxury yacht market is expected to grow in value from $7.67 billion in 2023 to $17.33 billion by 2032, according to a recent report from Fortune Business Insights .

Analysts attribute the ships’ rise in popularity to the increasing number of extremely wealthy individuals . Yachts have long been considered a status symbol — a reality that has only increased as wealth becomes concentrated in the hands of a small group of high status individuals .

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts —vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea as of this year. This is nearly quadruple the number of yachts seen in the ocean just three decades ago, according to Bloomberg .

Aside from an increase in popularity, the yacht industry has seen other changes in recent years. Increasingly, those in the market for a luxury ship are turning to alternate means of powering their vessels, as critics point to the excess emissions traditional yachts produce simply for recreational use.

In their 2024 report, Fortune Business Insights highlighted the growing trend of electrification as a significant area of growth in the coming years.

“A tough regulatory environment for traditional yachts and rising fuel prices will pave the way for the solid growth of electric yachts in the future,” the report reads. “Huge investments from various manufacturers and government support measures will accelerate the demand for electric yachts.”

Read on to learn more about the most luxurious yachts available for chartering in 2024.

Carinthia VII

Originally constructed in 2002, the award-winning Carinthia VII was recently remodeled and reimagined specifically for private charters. The 319-foot ship spans six decks and can accommodate up to 12 guests in eight staterooms. Among the ship’s amenities are two bars, a fully equipped gym and an outdoor projection screen that allows for an “immersive cinematic experience like no other.” The cost of chartering the Carinthia VII is $1,525,700 during both the winter and summer seasons.

The Lady S yacht boasts a number of exciting water toys, including jet skis, water skis, wakeboards and kayaks for athletic guests on the 305-foot ship. For those who prefer more indoor-oriented activities, however, you can also catch a film on the ship’s IMAX Dolby cinema — the first of its kind on any yacht in the world. Accommodating 12 guests, in seven cabins, the cost of chartering the Lady S begins at $1,743,328 a week.

The interior of the Ahpo yacht seems more reminiscent of a luxury hotel than a simple ship. Accommodating 16 guests and 36 crew members, the vessel features a full-size gym, a winter garden and a spa complete with a Himalayan salt sauna. The 378-foot long yacht was first manufactured in 2021 by the German shipyard LĂŒrssen. Excited sailors can charter the Ahpo from superyacht broker Edmiston, beginning at $2,833,376 a week.

500EXP Para Bellum

This 154-foot-long yacht can accommodate up to 12 travelers in its six cabins, along with up to 10 crew members. The ship was specially designed to enable “guests a 360-degree experience and relationship with the sea” through its unique stern and sundeck that allow travelers to safely stand “almost at sea level,” according to its Italian manufacturer San Lorenzo . Interested travelers can rent the ship for $359,609 a week.

The Renaissance

The Renaissance lives up to its grandiose name by going beyond traditional private yachts and bridging the gap between a personal vehicle and a full-on cruise ship. The 367-foot long ship features five decks and can accommodate 36 guests in 19 cabins. The Renaissance’s amenities include a 19-seat movie theater, a sushi-bar, and a full spa deck featuring a wellness area, plunge pools and a hair salon. The cost of chartering the ship from Burgess Yachts ranges from $3,269,280 to $3,814,160 a week.

How to Charter a Boat

If you want to sail off into the sunset, at least temporarily, you need to understand how to get aboard first.

An illustration of the bow of a boat with three women with flowing hair and cocktails looking over a man playing a guitar and then off in the water, four other vacationers are sunbathing on inner tubes.

By Lauren Sloss

This time of year, it’s an inevitable thought: Life would be that much better out on the water. Specifically, on a boat.

Even if you have neither a boat nor boating experience, it’s never been easier to make your nautical dreams come true — whether you want a day trip on your local lake or a fully staffed multiday voyage in a far-flung locale. Here are the initial questions that will help you plan an adventure on the water.

Whom are you traveling with?

Thinking about the size and dynamic of your group is an important first step, even if you are simply going on a day trip. Will children be on board? How old? What about elderly parents?

Dan Lockyer, the chief commercial officer of Dream Yacht Worldwide , strongly encourages travelers to determine group size — and, ideally, get people committed — before booking.

“The location that you want to go to, the time of year that you want to go, the type of boat that you want will entirely depend on the makeup of the group that you’re sailing with,” Mr. Lockyer said.

Do you want to captain, or do you want a captain?

Different charter companies specialize in certain locations, types of boats, itineraries and services. Some companies offer the opportunity for a “bareboat” charter, in which you rent the boat and take on the navigation and provisioning yourself, while others exclusively offer fully staffed options, including a captain and a cook.

If you want to captain the boat yourself, almost all outfits require some kind of proof of sailing or boating experience, often in line with local regulations.

Edward King, 45, an executive at a streaming company based in San Francisco, is experienced in sailing the city’s waterways. But on vacation, he said he would prefer to let a captain and crew take the lead.

Mr. King said he appreciates a captain who is familiar with both the local waters — “they’ll know how to avoid sailing into a certain sandbar,” he said, — as well as the local attractions.

In contrast, Matt Blake, 38, a software engineer based in Oakland, Calif., was eager to grow his sailing experience during a recent trip to La Paz, Mexico, with his fiancée. He hired a captain but made clear that the captain was there to help and teach.

Where do you want to go?

“Do you want something that’s more culturally oriented? Nature oriented? An adventure trip?” asked Mary Curry, the voyage product director of Adventure Life , which offers small group tours and private trips on land and on water around the world.

That answer can determine your destination. Popular cruising grounds include the Caribbean, Croatia, Alaska and French Polynesia, but the sky — or the sea — is really the limit. For help narrowing your focus, travel advisers often have relationships with charter companies or outfits around the world, and sailing publications offer recommendations.

Kyla Malkani, who has had experience with charters working as a destination wedding planner, recommends consulting the concierge of waterfront hotels, particularly for short-term or day rentals.

“A lot of times they will have either their own fleet or they will have some sort of connection at a dock,” said Ms. Malkani, 37, who is based in Washington, D.C., and is currently working as a content creator and freelance event planner.

What kind of boat?

Where you want to travel and for how long will likely determine the kinds of boats that are available to you. Crucial at this point, too, is an understanding of the boat’s layout and amenities.

“You definitely want to choose the right kind of boat,” said Ms. Malkani. “If you want more adventure, a sailboat is nice. If you’re looking for a luxury party environment, a yacht is best. And if you’re looking for something smooth, for older people or with kids, a catamaran is great.”

David Barclay is a luxury travel adviser who has also chartered boats for his own vacations.

“You want to match what the travelers want to what the boat offers,” he said.

Perhaps a group of friends might not mind a catamaran with functional but not luxurious marine bathrooms, but a multigenerational group might prefer more high-touch amenities.

When should I book?

Often, charter trips are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that require a great deal of advanced planning.

“You may have a specific place you want to go, or a specific time of year you want to travel,” said Mr. Barclay. “And some places just aren’t good at certain times of year.”

Naturally, you don’t want to be at sea in the Caribbean during hurricane season, or in the Mediterranean during winter storms. But you also might want to avoid peak cruising seasons, too.

The first three weeks of August are quite popular, said Mr. Lockyer. “If you have some flexibility and can travel in early July, you’ll get the same sort of great weather, a greater selection of boats and the anchorages won’t be as crowded.”

How much does it cost?

Charter costs are incredibly variable, dependent on all of the factors coming into play: your boat type and size, your destination, your group size, the amount of crew you’d like and the amenities on board. That said, costs could range anywhere from $2,000 for a day on a sailboat to hundreds of thousands of dollars for a multiday mega-yacht charter. Have a budget in mind when beginning your research process.

What if I didn’t plan far in advance?

While advanced planning is encouraged, and often necessary for bigger boat trips, it’s possible to book a boat last-minute.

Boatsetter , an Airbnb-like platform for boats, is a good resource for last-minute bookings, especially for day trips, and even has an Instant Book option for down-to-the-wire bookings.

“If it’s for a special event, or around major holidays, you may want to book a month or two in advance. But for general bookings, you can find options within a week or two,” said Kim Koditek, Boatsetter’s head of brand strategy and communications, of the company’s overnight offerings, which appear on their platform under the luxury yacht charters category .

Ms. Malkani has used Boatsetter for some of her charters, most of which have been booked with a specific goal in mind.

“I’m a sunset chaser,” she said. “My husband and I just really love being on the water, and we always try to squeeze in some sort of boat day activity when we’re traveling.”

Crew of Two Rivers charter fishing boat safe after weekend explosion

The crew was able to escape the boat and swim to shore..

yacht brisbane hire

TWO RIVERS – A charter fishing boat crew is safe after an explosion on the boat caused a fire July 13 in the Two Rivers harbor.

According to a news release from the Two Rivers Fire Department , the 32-foot charter fishing boat was fully engulfed in flames with heavy black smoke by the time the first fire vehicles arrived at the boat's location.

The crew saw the explosion and the fire while the boat was in the harbor just west of the Two Rivers Coast Guard Station. They escaped the boat and swam to shore. No injuries were reported, the news release said.

The U.S. Coast Guard was able to quickly secure the boat to the sea wall, which allowed fire crews to extinguish the flames from shore.

Chemical clean-up and containment was handled by a HAZMAT crew, and the fire is under investigation.

The TRFD received mutual aid from the U.S. Coast Guard, Manitowoc Fire Rescue, town of Two Rivers Fire, Mishicot Fire, Branch First Responders and Two Rivers Police Department.

Electric Boat in Groton launches 'Hire Hartford' to boost recruitment for building U.S. Navy subs

Reps. Larson and Courtney at Electric Boat Roundtable

The U.S. Navy and  Electric Boat  are continuing to ramp up hiring efforts for the company's Groton manufacturing facility that are needed now and will be required in the coming years to help produce two new classes of military submarines.

The company and the Navy have launched a new initiative to boost worker recruitment across the entire state of Connecticut, rather than just the southeastern part of the state, as has traditionally been the case. The "Hire Hartford" program is designed to build awareness of jobs in the maritime industry, as well as connect workers to training and potential employers.

The Hire Hartford program is modeled after a successful hiring initiative in Rhode Island, "Project Providence."

Project Providence led to 155 accepted offers by workers during Electric Boat's job fairs in the state in 2023 and 2024 after only having 14 in 2022. It also resulted in enrollment in Rhode Island worker training programs for jobs in the metal trades more than doubling.

The launch of the new Connecticut hiring initiative is being played out against  a consistent drumbeat of published reports that say worker shortages  are putting the production timetables for new Virginia-class submarines behind schedule.

U.S. Reps. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, and John Larson, D-1st District, were in East Hartford this week to help launch the Hiring Hartford program. Both lawmakers said while they remain confident Electric Boat can keep up Virginia class sub production schedule, the importance of meeting its workforce needs is key to the national security of the United States.

"We're in a strategic race," Larson said. "Even though China has surpassed us in terms of (overall) fleet, we still maintain the edge in submarines, which gives us a tremendous advantage. But China isn't going away; they remain determined to surpass us."

Courtney said Electric Boat hired 5,300 workers last year in Rhode Island and Connecticut, with 65 percent of those new employees coming from the Nutmeg State. Through the end of June, Electric Boat has added another 2,500 workers, he said.

"If you're going to keep up that pace up, you've got to expand the radius that you hire from," Courtney said. "It's something that is at the highest urgency. I'm very bullish that we are going to work our way through this and that we're going to gut those production targets sooner than the Navy has been projecting."

Even with the pace of hiring at current levels, Courtney said three Virginia-class subs will be delivered to the Navy between now and Jan. 1.

Reuters reported in April that Virginia-class submarines as well as an aircraft carrier and frigates being built for the Navy are now years behind schedule because of skilled labor shortages, design issues, and supply chain challenges.

Part of the reason for the labor shortage, according to Courtney, is that two classes of submarine are being built for the Navy at the same time. In addition to the smaller Virginia-class submarines, there are also larger Columbia-class submarines that he said "have more missile tubes for conventional weapons."

"Columbia right now is of the highest priority because of the age of the subs they are going to be replacing," he said. "That's consuming a lot more of the workforce in terms of production schedules."

Courtney said the hiring levels at Electric Boat currently "exceed what they did in World War II, to put it in perspective."

Shawn Coyne, vice president for human resources at Electric Boat, described the Hire Hartford initiative as "an all-in approach."

"We have to pull in from different areas of Connecticut," Coyne said. He said in order to achieve the production levels required of Electric Boat. the company is hiring at historic levels.

Ron Angelo. president and chief executive officer of the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, described Hire Hartford as "a generational opportunity " because of the quality of the jobs that Electric Boat is offering.

"We can change lives with this," Angelo said.

Charter Captains Say Sharks Are Out of Control and They’re Losing More Fish to the ‘Taxman’

By Bob McNally

Posted on Jul 16, 2024 2:59 PM EDT

7 minute read

Anyone who is more than just an occasional saltwater fisherman has almost assuredly met the “taxman.” This nickname is meant to describe any shark that steals a hooked fish (or part of it) off an angler’s line. And with shark populations on the rise in many areas , it seems like more and more saltwater anglers across the East Coast are getting taxed.

Although sharks exist on all major coastlines, they’ve become especially problematic in the Atlantic and Gulf Coast, where many charter captains say they’re losing more fish than ever before. More than a few striped bass have fallen victim to sharks in Chesapeake Bay and the greater New England area, while anglers in the Gulf are often pushed out of their best spots by the sharp-toothed predators.

The warm waters of the South seem to be a particularly troublesome region for fish-stealing sharks, and I’ve experienced this myself on at least a few occasions over the years. I can remember one recent trip on the Mississippi coast, which is a great wade fishing area but one of the most shark-infested places I’ve ever fished. Six of us were in chest deep water, catching one speckled trout after another. Soon a school of sharks showed up, their fins cutting through the surface and sending trout fleeing in every direction.

A jack eaten by a shark.

The gang worked closer and, when the 4- to 6-foot-long sharks started slamming our hooked trout mere feet from our rod tips, we finally gave up and retreated to a beach. That’s when we looked down at the stringers attached to our wade belts and saw that only the trouts’ heads were left. Those fish were devoured within arm’s reach and we never even felt it.

Prowling the Shallows, Patrolling the Depths

Nearly every charter captain working in the Gulf of Mexico has a story like mine. Captain Mike Frenette fishes around Venice, Louisiana, where the rich waters at the mouth of the Mississippi river draw tremendous schools of shrimp and baitfish, along with a wide assortment of gamefish, including cobia, tuna, dolphin, wahoo, and marlin. This also brings a staggering number of sharks to the area, and Frenette says he’s seeing more of them now than ever before.

“Over the past 10 years I’ve seen a tremendous increase in many shark species,” Frenette tells Outdoor Life . “They’re not only in deep water at the mouth of the Mississippi River, but throughout the shallow waters of the Delta.”

Frenette says he’s seen bull sharks ravaging redfish in water as shallow as two feet. And when he’s fishing for bigger bull reds and tuna in deeper water, encounters with sharks are almost a given.

A grouper bitten by a shark.

Photo via Facebook

“There are places at the mouth of the Mississippi where giant dusky, bull, and silky sharks attack maybe 80 percent of the yellowfin [tuna] we hook,” Frenette says. “I’ve never seen the number of sharks that we now have in coastal and offshore waters around Louisiana.”

Captains in other states throughout the coastal South will tell you the same. Offshore crews encounter taxmen on a daily basis, and the Florida Keys have about as many sharks as anywhere else in the country. Sharks there see plenty of anglers, so it doesn’t take them long to associate fishing boats with free meals.

“The sharks roaming ledges and reefs are trained to come to fishing boats and hang there waiting for an easy meal,” says Capt. Joel Brandenburg, who runs Ana Banana Charter Fishing in Marathon, Florida. “Feeding sharks with the fish we hook is an everyday occurrence for me and just about every other charter captain I know in the Florida Keys.”

Spoiling Tournaments and Eating World Records

Sharks eating hooked gamefish is bad news whenever it occurs, but there are times when it’s especially problematic — both for anglers and the resource itself. On Friday, for example, Florida held a one-day season for Atlantic snapper, with a NOAA-dictated limit of one fish per angler due to the Fed’s concerns over fish populations.

Legions of sport anglers loaded their boats with fuel, ice, tackle, and friends, and then headed offshore in the hopes of landing a single large snapper per person. Fishing was exceptional by most accounts, but sharks took a murderous toll, according to many local anglers.

“I’d bet my last dollar that everyone who fished off northeast Florida during that one-day snapper season had big trouble boating their hooked snapper, triggerfish, or grouper,” says Capt. Danny Patrick, a longtime offshore angler who fishes out of Jacksonville.

It’s doubtful whether any of those stolen fish would have broken records, but that exact scenario played out in July 2023, when Florida charter captain Daniel Delph watched a client lose what could have been a world-record snapper to sharks . They were fishing near the Dry Tortugas, 75 miles off Key West, when the angler hooked a heavy fish some 300 feet down. Sharks got to the snapper immediately, and by the time the angler reeled in the fish, the only thing left was a massive red head.

“Our best guess was that fish whole and intact was about 55 pounds,” Delph says. “It likely would have been an IGFA all-tackle record for red snapper, which is just over 50 pounds.”

Delph says he remembers having troubles with sharks back in the 80s, 90s, and early aughts. But he explains that today, the problem is twice as bad as it was back then, and he’ll often have to move areas or target a different species when the taxmen move in.

“We work hard to avoid sharks,” he says. “We never anchor, and we never fish more than 10 or 15 minutes in one spot. We have to constantly move around to avoid them.”

Some anglers have even lost money to the pesky predators. Sharks are a constant presence at most fishing tournaments, and the 65 th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin tournament out of Morehead City, North Carolina, was no exception. In June 2023, a team of anglers competing in the tourney got the disappointment of their fishing lives when they weighed what would have been the largest marlin caught at the event.

That 619.4-pound blue marlin would have brought them a $3.5 million payout. But tournament officials noticed a shark bite near the fish’s head, which automatically disqualified it .

Is It Time to Change Shark Management?

Sharks have inhabited the oceans for much longer than we’ve been fishing with rods and reels, and fishermen have always had to pay the taxman on occasion. But many of those anglers will tell you that the problem has gotten particularly bad in recent decades as several laws protecting sharks from harvest have been enacted.

These regulations were made, in part, to balance out the negative perceptions that people held about sharks, and to stem the demand for shark fins abroad. Now, some anglers believe the restrictions have gone too far by replacing scientific management with protectionist ideologies. They say that shark populations have gotten out of control in the absence of pressure, and they’d like to see increased of harvest of certain species — especially bull sharks, which are one of the three shark species most likely to attack a human, though attacks remain statistically rare.

“It doesn’t matter where you are, sharks are everywhere,” Delph says. “So many people think [all] sharks are endangered, but that’s not the case. It’s just so frustrating because it’s devastating to our marine fisheries.”

Landing a hammerhead shark.

Sharks are notorious for eating hooked tarpon, another world-renowned game fish that’s a conservation priority in many states. As a result, these fish are almost always released, but that doesn’t mean they always swim way.

“The biggest threat to my charter fishing is when sharks attack tarpon [caught] my clients,” says Capt. Ray Markham, who fishes out of St. Petersburg and has a background in marine biology. “Every year sharks follow the northward tarpon migration. I see guys in waist deep water holding their tarpon for a photo. You won’t catch me in there because I’ve seen 15-foot sharks — hammerheads, bulls, and others — that’ll take a tarpon out of your hand when you’re trying to unhook and release the fish.”

Another longtime and respected Florida guide, Capt. Lenny Moffo remembers holding an estimated 100-pound tarpon boat side one time so his client could get a photo. Moffo pulled the tarpon’s head up as the picture was snapped, but as soon as he released the fish there was an explosion of water, blood, and scales as a shark devoured the trophy fish.

I can remember one outing near the mouth of Charlotte Harbor, when two friends and I experienced some of the best tarpon fishing of our lives, catching 13 tarpon that weighed between 50 to 150 pounds. After losing four of those huge tarpon to taxmen, we quit fishing for the day, not wanting to feed any more quality gamefish to the big hammerheads and bull sharks that were lying in wait.

Workers leave the Groton shipyard of General Dynamics Electric Boat in January 2010 . Courant file photo

The jobs discussion is part of the Navy’s multi-billion dollar drive to accelerate shipyard production and replace its aging submarine fleet in the face of aggressive Chinese naval expansion in the Indo-Pacific and evolving security threats elsewhere.

The jobs and production push already has resulted in a remarkable workforce expansion at Electric Boat’s shipyards in Groton and Quonset Point, R.I. Electric Boat, a division of General Dynamics, hired and trained more than 5,000 over each of the last two years and another 2,500 ove the first six months of 2024.

With the prospect of billions of dollars of Virginia and Columbia class submarine contracts extending for decades, Electric Boat said it plans to continue hiring at the same rate for the foreseeable future.

Discussion of the  jobs and training program, which will be known as Hire Hartford, will be hosted at the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology in East Hartford by U.S. Reps. John Larson and Joe Courtney, an influential voice in naval affairs as ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee ’s seapower subcommittee.

In attendance will be representatives of the Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base Team, Electric Boat, local companies involved in the submarine construction supply chain and state affiliated training and jobs placement organizations.

The program has the potential to provide hundreds of skilled, high-paying and long-term manufacturing jobs to Hartford area workers. The jobs and training plan is expected to be similar to a model the Navy used in Providence and will likely involve a partnership with technical high schools, something already underway in southeastern Connecticut.

With an ‘incredible appetite’ for labor: Electric Boat recruits locally, eyes Hartford and New Haven

“The conference is a recognition by the Navy and industry that we have just got to start widening the recruitment radius into the Hartford region,” Courtney said. “They did that in Rhode Island about 18 months ago with Project Providence and that helped at Quonset in terms of getting more workers.”

The USS Virginia returns to the Electric Boat Shipyard in...

JACK SAUER / AP

The USS Virginia returns to the Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton on July 30, 2004, after its first sea trials.

Electric Boat and the Navy are finding that it is a challenge to ramp up production after decades of flat, post-cold war defense spending that shrunk the U.S. fleet by half while idling and, eventually, depleting the ranks of welders, shipfitters and riggers who build ships, not to mention the companies that supply materials and components.

Lay-offs, retirements, industrial outsourcing and the trend away from trade schools and toward college also contributed to labor and supply chain shrinkage. Between the 1980s, when Electric Boat was booming with Cold War construction, and today, the U.S. industrial base, the manufacturing segment of the workforce dedicated to building things like submarines, slipped from 35 to 12 percent.

CT is attracting international attention. It’s about security, jobs and building submarines

Against that backdrop, Congress and the Navy have now committed to a program to build dozens of submarines of two classes — Columbia and Virginia — that will be the most sophisticated, stealthy and possibly the most expensive weapons platforms ever designed. And the Navy wants the ships as quickly as possible.

At 560-feet, the Columbia, which will fire ballistic missiles, will be the largest ever submarine, and is the Pentagon’s top priority. Each ship is now estimated to cost more than $9 billion and take 84 months to build. The Pentagon has designated Columbia the top national defense priority and wants at least 12. When complete, the class will carry 70 percent of the country’s nuclear arsenal.

The Navy wants at least 60 of the smaller Virginia class boats, hunter-killers designed to destroy enemy submarines and surface ships, deliver missiles to land targets, deploy special operations teams, support naval battle groups and carry out intelligence gathering missions. The latest version costs about $3.5 billion and takes about 60 months to build.

Increasing pressure on sub construction is the trilateral AUKUS agreement signed by  Australia, the United Kingdom and the U.S as a means of countering Chinese expansionism. The treaty commits the U.S. to selling at least three and as many as five Virginia submarines to Australia. Before such a sale in closed, whoever is U.S. president must first certify that the Navy has enough ships to satisfy U.S security needs.

As a sign of its concern over Chinese aggression , Australia, a nation of 28 million, has committed to a $320 billion modernization of its Navy and shipbuilding capacity, and has invested another $3 billion in the United States to strengthen the U.S. submarine industrial base.
