The 10 Most Haunted Places in Erie, PA
With a name like Erie, you pretty much automatically assume that it must have its fair share of ghost stories to tell, right? Well, you certainly won’t be disappointed because Erie, Pennsylvania is indeed littered with a number of very interesting locations, all of which are reportedly haunted.
Let’s take a closer look at the 10 most haunted places in Erie, PA:
1. Old Main Tower at Mercyhurst College
The Old Main Tower located at Mercyhurst College was once used as a convent in the early twentieth century. It is said that there was one lady in particular who had joined the convent upon learning that her lover had been killed in action during World War II.
However, a few years later he returned, but the woman had already promised her heart to God and it was too late. Realizing her mistake the woman went insane and she was locked in the tower where she eventually committed suicide.
Following her death, a ring that had been given to her by her love was placed at the bottom of a statue of the Virgin Mary. For over fifty years, anybody who touched that ring ended up dead within 5 years.
In the end, the ring was locked away for safety, but from time to time, it reappears without explanation. There have also been numerous sightings of the nun roaming the halls, perhaps searching for her ring?
2. Old Crowley Mansion
The Old Crowley Mansion is still considered to be one of the most haunted houses in Erie PA. The house was actually one of the first haunted buildings documented in Erie.
The Crowley Family were incredibly wealthy, but they were also plagued by misfortune including murders, illness, and untimely deaths.
One member of the family was murdered in the mansion by his own wife and made it his mission to torment her from beyond the grave by causing destruction and mayhem throughout the house night after night.
However, those who visit today say that they are overcome with a wave of sadness and negativity. Some have also claimed to have seen apparitions on the property.
3. Gannon University
Gannon University is another of the popular haunted locations in Erie PA. One particular hot spot for paranormal activity is one of the fraternity houses on campus.
One of the most commonly retold incidents involves a Halloween party where a dark figure in a black cowboy hat apparently appeared and was followed upstairs by one of the partygoers.
Upon reaching the top of the stairs he apparently tipped his hat to the person following behind before promptly disappearing. A short time later, weird stuff started to happen upstairs including unexplained noises and windows/doors opening and closing on their own.
The man in the hat then reappeared to warn everybody that they should immediately leave the house before disappearing once again! There have also been reports of strange activity in the Schuster Theatre on campus.
4. Cathedral of St Paul
If you talk to members of the congregation at the Cathedral of St. Paul in Erie, PA then you will find that the vast majority of them fully believe that the ghost of a little girl known as Katie is still lingering here even after her death.
Katie apparently died in a car accident close by and she is now said to have remained in the church. Members of the congregation have described hearing a child’s laughter which is said to sound very much like Katie’s laugh did when she was alive.
There have also been reports of heavy objects getting moved around inside empty rooms and the church organ has also been known to play by itself on occasion!
5. Nicky’s Pub
Although it is now known as Nicky’s Pub, in the past the building served a variety of different purposes including a few business ventures that were believed to have mafia and prostitution connections. It is now said to be one of the most haunted buildings in Erie, PA.
There have been frequent reports of a man in a long coat who hangs around in the East hallway. There have also been other common paranormal phenomena reported such as a smell of sulfur, disembodied voices, electronic devices malfunctioning, and doors closing by themselves.
It is also fairly common for unexplained faces to pop up in photographs of the place.
6. Watson-Curtze Mansion
The Watson-Curtze Mansion is home to a museum that is said to be incredibly haunted. The spirit that is said to be responsible for the paranormal activity in the museum is Revolutionary War Hero, General Anthony Wayne.
He is said to have died in Erie and was buried locally. However, a few years later his son demanded that his father’s remains be relocated to a cemetery in South-Eastern Pennsylvania where the family was from.
In order to fulfill these demands, the General’s body was exhumed and placed inside an iron cauldron where it was boiled to remove all traces of flesh. This was done because moving bones was much easier than transporting a partially decomposed corpse.
The cauldron and the tools that were used to carry out this procedure, which some might term an act of desecration, are now on display in the museum and they are believed to be the reason why his spirit is tied to the building.
The cauldron is known to rattle loudly at night and some say they have seen General Wayne’s apparition in the kitchen where it is displayed.
There have also been reports of the spirit of a little girl haunting the second floor of the mansion.
7. The Brewerie at Union
The Brewerie at Union is apparently haunted by the spirit of a young woman called Clara who died after falling down the stairs here.
She has been seen and heard on a number of occasions by customers, staff and even visiting paranormal investigators.
The owners are happy enough to share the building with young Clara and the bar even serves a beer that is dedicated to her!
8. Erie Cemetery
One of the most well-known haunted locations in Erie is probably Erie Cemetery which is reported to have a number of haunted spots within its gates.
One of these hotspots is an area where there is a series of headstones that are arranged in a circle. This is known to locals as ‘the witches circle’ and legend has it that Satan himself pulled some of his worshippers underground in this very spot during a Satanic ritual.
Some of the tombstones even appear to have scorch marks on them. Another spot that is said to be particularly is one of the mausoleums which is adorned with gothic ornamental details on the front.
The mausoleum is dark and appears to have been on fire at some point. It is apparently very haunted and people have heard strange noises coming from inside the structure.
There have also been reports of a black spectral dog wandering the cemetery after dark.
9. Wintergreen Gorge
Wintergreen Gorge is said to be haunted by the ghost of a young man called Tim who is believed to have been in his twenties, although he looks far younger.
Many people who have encountered his spirit have actually described him as a child. He is more often than not accompanied by his dog, Dutch.
The story is that he used to hike in Wintergreen Gorge with Dutch until his dog died. A few years later Tim died in an accident and now it seems like the pair have been reunited and have returned to a place that they both loved to live out their afterlife together.
It’s actually a pretty nice story, and most witnesses confirm that they do not really recall being afraid when they have encountered Tim and Dutch on the hiking trails!
10. Axe Murder Hollow
There is one spot in the wooded area behind Thomas Road which has a particularly chilling history. This is apparently the site of a murderous rampage at the hands of an ax-wielding maniac.
It is hardly surprising that it is now said to be one of the most haunted areas in Erie PA! Witnesses have reported seeing the apparition of a young woman, believed to have been one of his victims, running around and screaming as if she is being chased. There have also been sightings of the killer himself.

we had an amazing time. starting from waiting in line and my son getting chased (he loved it). after that he seemed to be a target if you will and the performers were amazing with it! they knew him by name (kaleb). there was one specific performer who followed us and informed other performs we were coming. it made my son and nieces year! they are still talking about. hats off to everyone involved in last nights scare!! was def worth the line and money spent..
The actors and props were great. There were some clever scares, which was really fun. I liked that it was multiple levels of the factory and it was longer than I expected which was nice. Overall, I’d go again. Good job everyone!
AMAZING!!! We took our son tonight for his 18th birthday with some friends and we all had a blast. Very well executed and worth the money. We even talked to the people who run it and they are genuine good hearted people who really care not only about the haunt but for the people who work for them. That touched my heart. Great job everyone! We will be back again!
My kids and I went here opening night and i truly felt it was worth every penny. we travel all over to go to these haunted attractions and we all felt the same way. A very good bang for your buck. actors were very engaging and tge owner took his time and talked to us all for a good hour afterwords. i believe he has a very good thing and truly wants to make it great. we will attend this haunt again this year.
My mom gifted me a trip through the Eeriebyss for my birthday today, and it was AMAZING!!! I got jumpscared quite a bit, and the characters are GREAT. There was one tall boi (or girl if you stick the the movie shhhh no spoilers) that was the absolute BEST! Actually, they were all pretty amazing. I haven’t been to a haunted attraction with my mom since I was really little, and I jumped and screeched and, most of all, I laughed. I actually don’t have a voice left at the moment, oops >.> It’s a great experience, especially one that’s so local. Amazing job, guys! Thank you!!! (And thanks to my mom for taking me!) Made a great end to my birthday!
We were first group through on Opening night and were sufficiently frightened. Actors did a pretty good job. Our guide, Bobo the Clown kept us moving through the 40 minute maze of screams, cries, blood and gore. My first trip through one of these since the Jaycees made them popular back in the 70's. For $20.....it was a fun trip, I'm sure it will only get better. Have fun, definitely check it out!
This was the one of the best haunted houses i have been too, it's was well worth the money spent on it. it's 2 floors of fun and scares. the actors and actresses did amazing at playing there part. it was a long wait to get in, we waited over an hour in line but in the end was worth the wait. the only suggestion i have is a bathroom right before you enter the haunted house because after the long wait i has to pee., ok i think this is worth the money to go see i went tonight with my family it was a blast i personally like the clown room but all the other sections were great as well these people work really hard on giving you a good scare yes i would go again great job to all of you working it you get a thumbs up from me ..
Andrew John Mohr
everybody involved is hard working and committed to the haunt life! it’s a great experience and a long walk thru — well worth the $20!
Had fun! Best one yet Definitely have to come back!!!!

Stay safe while scaring up some high spirits in Erie with this Halloween guide
Whether you like the scares or dressing up in a costume or even eating candy corn, it's a great time of year to be entertained.
There are numerous places around Erie to have a haunting good time on Halloween and the days leading to it. We'll share times for trick-or-treating and other places to get your ghoul on.
First, you'll want to remember that we're in the midst of a coronavirus pandemic, which is frightening enough, but none of the local municipalities to which we spoke were slashing trick-or-treating. If you decide to participate, local health officials had some ideas for staying safe.
Halloween is a holiday known for masks and while the Jason variety from "Friday the 13th" is certainly scary, such a novelty or a toy mask is not good protection against COVID-19. But wearing a cloth mask over the mouth and nose has been proven to reduce the spread of infectious respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19, according to Erie County Department of Health officials. They suggest making a cloth mask part of your costume.
Health Department officials also encouraged you to get creative with your props, especially ones with long handles. Figure out how to use a wand or staff to gather treats rather than using your hands.
If you get your Halloween joy from giving candy to kids in costumes, you can still savor the night. Health Department officials just suggest that instead of handing a treat to each child or letting them dig through a bowl, you lay out the items on a table or chair at a distance from the house, such as the end of the driveway or edge of the yard.
Or you can be inspired by Finn Jensen. In 2020, the Fairview Township teen set up a tube to his home's second-story window from which he could slide treats down to a dispenser on the ground that looked like a fire hydrant.
Halloween 2020: Chuting for safety Fairview teen's candy system highlights trick-or-treating precautions
Whether taking or giving treats, Health Department officials said, you should wash your hands before and after trick-or-treating.
We've compiled a list of trick-or-treating hours for as many municipalities in Erie County as we could and some in Crawford County. A few were still deciding on the date or time for trick-or-treating and others couldn't be reached for information.

In the days after trick-or-treating, health officials advise you to watch out for any symptoms of COVID-19, such as coughing, difficulty breathing, fever or chills, muscle or body aches, vomiting or diarrhea, or loss of taste or smell. Children and adults who are infected but do not show symptoms can infect others. Getting tested can help determine appropriate care and treatment, officials said.

More holiday fun
For revelers planning to attend attractions such as haunted houses or other indoor activities, Health Department officials issued a reminder that Erie County currently has a high rate of transmission, according to the Centers for Disease Control, and it recommends that all people, including those who are fully vaccinated, should wear masks indoors.
Seasonal celebrations: Fresh for the picking in the Erie region this autumn. All the fun that'll fit into fall
That's especially true if you're going to someplace where people will be screaming and yelling because when they do so, they spray tiny saliva droplets into the air, increasing the chances of infecting others, health officials said.

This haunted house was the BEST haunted house we've ever been to. Tons of actors! They were awesome! The seven of us went here and each one of us in our group got scared. We will definitely go back!

Great "New" Haunt. Friendly staff. We liked the attraction. One particular part was unlike any other haunted attraction we have been to! Loved it! What a cool idea! Go check it out & you will see what i mean....
Absolutely amazing. Scariest experience of my life. The first part of the house did amazing with what little they had to work with, but what really drove it home was the end [SPOILERS!!!]The maze at the end. Being chased by someone with a chainsaw and other actors cornering us and really messing with us made the whole experience well worth the 15 bucks. No need to hit the gym the day you go. You'll do plenty of running!

This haunted house is definitely worth your trip. Family owned and operated, it is truly amazing the work that these folks do! The scenes are spectacular and you WILL be scared!! I look forward to this place every year and it beats a lot of the other high-priced haunted houses in western PA.
