How to Remove Instagram Phantom Notifications on iPhone

How to Remove Instagram Fake Notifications on iPhone

False notifications on any social media app irritate me. This nasty thing always keeps me under the impression that some notifications are pending to see. Of late, I have seen many ghost notifications on my Instagram app in iPhone. I want to get rid of this false notifications menace.

I have employed a few tricks to delete such notifications. Please note that the workarounds listed below may or may not work on your iPhone. Let’s give it a try…

How to Remove Fake Notifications from Instagram on iPhone

Igtv notifications.

In my case, the primary suspect was IGTV. Instagram launched this standalone vertical video app in June 2018. When any Instagram user uploads video, you get a notification (if you are following that user on Instagram). Since the app is relatively new, many users have little information about the notifications related to this app.

If you have the same issue, tap on IGTV icon from the upper right corner of your iPhone screen.

Tap on IGTV Icon in Instagram on iPhone

Check the video shared by the users you follow. After watching the video, quit the app and see your Instagram app on the home screen. The false notification might have disappeared.

This trick has actually worked on my iPhone, and I hope this works on your device as well. If it fails to yield any result, go ahead.

Unlink Facebook Account

This sounds a bit crazy, but unlinking Facebook account from Instagram can remove fake notifications.

Step #1. Launch the Instagram app on your iPhone and tap on Profile icon from the bottom right corner → Next, tap on Hamburger icon (three horizontal lines) from the top right corner → On your phone screen, you can see a screen pops out from the right side. Tap on Settings from the bottom.

Tap on Profile then Tap on Settings in Instagram

Step #2. Scroll down and tap on Linked Accounts under the Privacy and Security section → Tap on Facebook → Tap on Unlink Account.

Unlink Facebook from Instagram on iPhone

Step #3. A pop-up box appears and asks you to confirm your action. Tap on Yes, Unlink.

Unlink Facebook Account from Instagram on iPhone

Your Facebook account is now unlinked from Instagram. Now go back to the Home page of Instagram and check all your direct messages and stories shared by others. Then, refresh the home page and that false Instagram notification should be gone.

You can relink your Facebook account after a couple of minutes.

Step #1. On your Instagram app, tap on profile icon → Tap on Hemberger icon → Go to Settings.

Step #2. Scroll down and tap on Linked Account under Privacy and Security → Tap on Facebook → Since you have unlinked your Facebook account, Instagram wants to use “facebook.com” to sign in → Tap on the Continue.

Link Facebook Account to Instagram on iPhone

Step #3. Tap on Log In with the Facebook app button → You will be prompted to open Instagram on Facebook → Tap on Open → Now tap on Continue as (your first name.)

Log into Instagram Using FaceBook App

And you have done it! You have successfully relinked your FB account with Instagram.

Log out of Instagram

Another easy way to solve the phantom notification issue on Instagram is to log out of the app.

Step #1. Tap on Profile icon → Hamburger icon.

Step #2. Tap on Settings → Log Out of (user name.) → Tap on Log Out.

Log out from Instagram on iPhone

You have successfully logged out. Next, you can log in with your Instagram ID and password after some time. If you have selected Remember option earlier, you are not supposed to enter your log-in ID and password again. Just tap on the login button and you are good to go.

Update Instagram App

A pending update may cause this issue. A simple solution is to update your Instagram app on iPhone.

Step #1. Launch App Store from the home screen of your iPhone → Now tap on Updates from the bottom menu.

Step #2. Find the Instagram app from the list of apps to be updated → Tap on the Update button next to Instagram.

Update Instagram on iPhone

Uninstall Instagram

As a last resort, you can delete the app from your iPhone and reinstall.

Step #1. Tap and hold an Instagram app on the home screen of your iPhone → All the apps begin to wiggle and a delete icon (x) appears on the top left corner of the app.

Step #2. Tap on Delete and you will be asked to confirm your action. Tap on Delete again.

Delete Instagram App from iPhone

Instagram will be deleted from your iPhone. You can reinstall the app from the App Store.

That’s all folks!

1. Use the “unread” filter

How to clear Instagram direct message notification but no message

The first way to clear the notification from your direct messages is to use the “unread” filter on Instagram.

Use the “unread” filter on Instagram to view any unread messages.
If you’ve forgotten to read some messages in the past, this filter is useful for finding them.

Instagram has an “unread” filter where you can check messages you’ve received but hasn’t read.

The filter can be found in your direct message list.

It’s important to use this filter because you may have left out some messages.

In other words, even if you think that you’ve read all the messages in your inbox, you might have left out one.

The idea here is to filter out any unread messages so that you can read them and get rid of the notification.

Here’s how you can use the “unread” filter on Instagram:

  • Go to the home page.
  • Tap on the “arrow” icon on the top-right hand corner to access your direct messages.
  • Tap on the “filter” icon on the right-hand side of the search bar.
  • Select “Unread” to filter unread messages.
  • Read unread messages (if any) to clear the notification.

Once you’ve filtered your messages to “unread”, any unread messages will be shown.

Tap on these messages to view them and the notification will be cleared once you viewed every message.

If you happened to have read all messages, this message will be shown, “No unread messages”.

2. Refresh your direct messages

Instagram refresh direct messages to view message requests

The second way is to refresh your direct message list on Instagram.

Message requests might be the cause of the phantom message notification.
At times, you need to refresh your direct message list in order to view message requests on Instagram.

At times, some direct messages are hidden on Instagram.

In other words, the direct message notification but no message might be due to your message requests.

In order to view those messages, you’ll need to refresh your direct message list.

For example , message requests are hidden at times until you refresh your direct message list.

After you refresh your direct message list, message requests will show up at the top of it.

You need to either allow, decline, or delete these message requests in order to clear your notifications.

To delete the message request, simply swipe left on the message and select on “Delete”.

Here’s how you can find these message requests:

  • Pulldown to refresh your direct messages.
  • View any message requests you see.
  • Either allow, decline, or delete these message requests to clear your notifications.

After you take the appropriate action on your message requests, the phantom notification should be removed from the “arrow” icon.

It’s important to make sure to stay up to date with your message requests on Instagram.

This is to ensure that your direct message notifications are cleared at all times.

Otherwise, you might be overloaded with these notifications.

3. Clear the cache

ghost instagram notification

Next, you can try clearing Instagram’s cache on your device.

Your direct message data might be cached by Instagram.

In order to get rid of the direct message notification but no message, you can try clearing Instagram’s cache.

This means that messages that you have read might be still listed as unread.

In order to fix this, you need to clear Instagram’s cache.

Before clearing the Instagram cache, make sure to force close the app on your device first.

Here’s how you can clear the Instagram cache on an iPhone :

  • Go to your phone’s settings.
  • Tap on “General”.

  • Select “Clear Cache” to clear the cache.

Once you cleared the cache on Instagram, it should clear the phantom notification on your direct messages.

Clearing cache will fix common issues on Instagram and makes it load faster the next time you open it.

It also frees up your storage space as it removes temporary files.

Clearing cache will not delete your login credentials or app settings, so you don’t have to worry about losing anything important.

4. Log out and in

How to log out of Instagram

The next thing you can try is logging out and in on Instagram.

Logging out and in of Instagram might help to clear the phantom direct message notification.

  • Go to the Google Play Store.
  • Tap on the menu > My apps & games.
  • Tap on Instagram, then select “Uninstall”.
  • Go back to the Google Play Store, search for Instagram, and install it back.

By reinstalling Instagram, its cache will be deleted.

In addition, reinstalling Instagram will ensure that it’s at its latest version.

This can fix common issues that you might face in the app.

If you see an Instagram direct message notification but no message, it can be annoying.

This is because the notification will not go away even though you might have read all of your messages already.

Here are the key solutions you’ve learned in this article to get rid of the phantom notification once and for all:

  • Use the “unread” filter to filter out your unread messages and view them.
  • Refresh your direct message list to view your message requests.
  • Clear Instagram’s cache to clear cached direct messages.

There are many parts that you might see Instagram notifications (like Instagram direct messages, and IGTV). If Instagram says you have a message, but you don’t, fix the issue as follows:

Instagram DM notifications won’t go away

It might happen for you to see a number or even a few numbers on your Instagram direct icon. However, if you open the direct message sections, you won’t see anything.

If Instagram shows you the notifications but you don’t see any messages? Follow the instructions below.

Check the general message

As you might know, there are two different parts to the Instagram direct message section. first the primary direct messages, and general ones (it is like archived messages). however, if someone on the general list would send you a message, you can see the notification beside the icon.

Check the message requests

Message requests also send you a notification in the notification bar. Even if you check the settings, you can get the notifications on your screen. Even if it is like a spam message. You would see a message like this “Someone tries to send you a message”. so, go to the direct message section on Instagram, and check if there are any request messages. tap on it, and open the message. The notifications won’t go until you read the messages.

Check the entire direct message

If someone sends you a direct message on Instagram, and they deactivate their accounts, the message will also disappear. However, if they return to Instagram, the message will appear again. So, you will see the notification on your Instagram direct message icon.

To fix this, you should scroll down the entire message until you see the unread message. Once you open it, the notification will disappear.

In my case, the main suspect was IGTV. Instagram launched this vertical video app in 2018. When a user that you follow uploads a video on IGTV, you get a notification. Since the app is relatively new, many Instagram users don’t know about the notifications related to this app.

  • Check the video shared by your following. After watching the video, check your Instagram on the home screen. The fake notification might have disappeared.

This method has actually worked on my iPhone, and I hope this works on your phone as well. If it doesn’t, go ahead.

Why Does My Instagram Say I Have A Message?

Steve Kuhn

If you remain active on more than three social media platforms at a time, you are likely to receive at least 30 notifications per day.

These can range from increasing followers to your latest photo reaching hundreds of likes.

But sometimes you may wonder why Instagram says you have a message.

You might often receive a DM notification for Instagram. But, on opening it, you might notice no new messages. While it can very well be a glitch, sometimes the actual reasons may not become apparent at first glance. Maybe someone’s trying to forward a scam link, or the sender deleted the message.

Thus, it becomes crucial to understand how and why it occurs on Instagram. This article will dwell deep into the possible reasons, letting you decide on the best course of action the next time you wonder why your Instagram says you have a message .

How Does Instagram Handle Notifications?

Reason #1: deleted messages, reason #2: message requests, reason #3: hidden message requests, reason #4: messages from scam accounts, fix #1: updating the instagram app, fix #2: reviewing your dm communication preferences, fix #3: reporting spam, fix #4: clearing instagram cache.

Instagram creates a notification for the user that corresponds to any of the following events:

  • Posts, stories, reels, and comments
  • Following and follower updates
  • Live and IGTV from the accounts you follow
  • Direct messages
  • Changes to your Instagram terms of use

Additionally, the app makes it highly customizable to let you choose which notifications you wish to receive, if at all.

There is even an option that mutes them for a set time so that you can focus on your work instead of watching cute puppy reels.

Reasons You May Receive DM Notifications

You may receive DM notifications that don’t show up in your conversations.

These are called ghost notifications and seem to happen with people who use Instagram regularly.

Such incidences occur for any of the following reasons.

The most common reason for false DM notifications is that the person who sent them didn’t mean to in the first place.

They quickly realized their mistake and deleted the message from the chat before you could read it.

Messages from accounts not part of your followers or following don’t go straight to Instagram DMs.

Instead, they make their way to the “ Requests ” section, where you can examine them before deciding to reply.

Message Requests

Nevertheless, receiving such messages may create a push notification with no updates in the regular chats.

To access these messages, go to the “ Requests ” tab on the right-hand side of the chat screen.

The “ Hidden Requests ” folder is like the deep web of Instagram DMs.

It would help to consider everything in it suspicious.

It houses the message requests that may be unwanted, offensive, contain spam, or match your hidden words’ preferences .

Hidden Message Requests

Often, you might receive a DM notification that you can’t find even in the “ Requests ” section.

Those would probably go to “ Hidden Requests .”

When opening such messages, you should remain wary not to click links or download files, as they can cause severe harm to your device or Instagram account.

Scammers use fake DM requests to trick customers into thinking something is wrong with their accounts.

Whereas a human user can only do it once or twice by mistake, a chatbot can spam hundreds of false messages per minute.

It may not seem like a huge issue to most people, but some can consider it way worse than it is.

In desperation, they might turn to a service advertising fixing Instagram notifications.

In the worst-case scenario, they might take a fake call from someone claiming to be an Instagram employee.

No one from Instagram, Facebook, or even your bank will ask you for your personal details, such as your debit/credit card number or online banking password . Never share such information with anyone, whoever they claim to be.

How You Can Remove False DM Notifications From Instagram

There are a few proven methods that you can utilize to remove false DM notifications from Instagram.

Instagram releases several bug fixes and security upgrades periodically.

Keeping your app updated with the latest version can scale down the volume of false DM notifications you receive.

Depending on your smartphone’s OS, you can do it from the App Store or the Google Play Store .

Update Button Instagram

Instagram allows you to set custom DM parameters through the “ Message control ” settings.

To access those settings, follow the steps below:

Instagram App Mobile

Here, you can select whether you want direct chats, requests, or anything else from specific people in your network.

Sure, the “ Hidden Requests ” feature works fine, but you can use “ Message control ” to add another layer of security to your Instagram account.

Sometimes, a few spam messages might make it through to your account, despite your and Instagram’s best efforts.

You should then report that message by tapping and holding the text and selecting the “ Report ” option from the menu.

Reporting Spam Instagram Messages

If required, you can block the user after reporting them as spam. Instagram considers your response and warns other users who might receive similar messages.

There can be instances when Instagram might cache the data related to your DMs on your device.

Not clearing the cache regularly can lead to even read messages being marked unread.

Clear Data And Cache Instagram

Thus, you can control ghost notifications by Instagram DMs by clearing the app’s cache every few months.

You need to do it through your device’s app settings , as Instagram doesn’t have the feature yet.

You don’t need to freak out when you receive a random DM notification without unread messages in your inbox.

Social media technology, as with everything, doesn’t come without faults.

We hope this guide helps you and your friends the next time someone asks why their Instagram says they have a message.

You can at least assure them that it is not a cyber ghost.

Fix Instagram notification won’t go away

instagram notification

Many iOS users have experienced ghost notifications problem on the Instagram application. The bug creates a false impression of pending notifications; but when people open the app, there is no notification. If you are facing a similar issue, here is how to remove Fake notifications.

Fake notifications on any  social media  platform annoy me. This dirty thing always keeps me thinking that some notifications are pending to see. Lately, I’ve seen many ghost notifications on my Instagram.

How to fix Instagram notifications won’t go away?

I want to get rid of this false notifications issue. I have used a few methods to delete such notifications. Please note that the workarounds listed below may or may not work on your app. So, just give it a try!

There are many parts that you might see Instagram notifications (like Instagram direct messages, IGTV). If Instagram says you have a message, but you don’t, fix the issue as follow:

  • Check the unread messages in general messages, requested messages, and direct messages.
  • Check the IGTV notifications
  • Update the Instagram
  • Uninstall, and install the Instagram again
  • Unlink Facebook account

1. Instagram DM notifications won’t go away

It might happen for you to see a number or even a few number on your Instagram direct icon. However, if you open the direct message sections, you won’t see anything.

If Instagram show you the notifications but you don’t see any message? Follow the instructions bellow or look them up at  manualsnet.com , a free online manual that can help you with any problem in few easy steps.

  • Check the general message

As you might know, there are two different parts on Instagram direct message section. first the primary direct messages, and general ones (it is like archived messages). however, if someone on the general list would send you a message, you can see the notification in beside the icon.

  • Check the message requests

Message request also send you a notification in the notification bar. Even if you check the setting, you can get the notifications on your screen. Even it is like the spam message. You would see a message like this “Someone tries to send you message”. so, go to the direct message section on Instagram, and check if there are any request messages. tap on it, and open the message. The notifications won’t go, until you read the messages.

  • Check the entire direct message

If someone send you a direct message on Instagram, and they deactivate their accounts, the message would also disappear. However, if they return to the Instagram, the message will appear again. So, you will see the notification on your Instagram direct message icon.

To fix this, you should scroll down the entire message until you see the unread message. Once you open it, the notification will disappear.

2. IGTV notifications won’t go away

In my case, the main suspect was IGTV. Instagram launched this vertical video app in 2018. When a user that you follow uploads a video on IGTV, you get a notification. Since the app is relatively new, many  Instagram users  don’t know about the notifications related to this app.

If you have the same issue:

  • Click on IGTV icon on the top right corner of your iPhone screen.
  • Check the video shared by your following. After watching the video, check your Instagram on the home screen. The fake notification might have disappeared.

This method has actually worked on my iPhone, and I hope this works on your phone as well. If it doesn’t, go ahead.

3. Unlink Facebook Account to get rid of notifications

This sounds a little crazy, but unlinking your Facebook account from Instagram can remove false notifications. This is how:

  • Open your Instagram app and go to your profile by tapping on its icon on the bottom right corner.
  • Next, tap on the three horizontal lines icon from the top right corner
  • now you can see a screen pops out from the right corner. Tap on Settings.
  • Scroll down and click on Linked Accounts under the “Privacy and Security” section.
  • Tap on Facebook and unlink your account from Instagram.
  • A pop-up window appears requiring you to confirm your action. Tap on Yes, Unlink.
  • Your Facebook is now unlinked from Instagram. Now head back to Instagram’s Home page and check all your DMs and stories. Then, refresh the feed page, and that fake  Instagram notification  should be gone.

If those are your questions, I suggest you tap the link above and learn about the details of Facebook screenshot.

4. Update the Instagram App

A pending update may induce this issue. A single solution is to update your Instagram app.

  • Open App Store and tap on Updates from the bottom menu.
  • Find Instagram from the list of updates and tap on the Update button next to it.

Instagram update

5. Uninstall the Instagram App

As a last option, you can remove the app from your iPhone and reinstall.

  • Tap and hold your Instagram app on the home screen, a delete icon (x) shows up on the top left corner of the app.
  • Tap on Delete, and you will be required to confirm your action. Tap on Delete again.

Uninstall Instagram

Instagram will be uninstalled from your phone. You can reinstall the app from the App Store.

False notifications are the most annoying thing that can happen to any Instagram user. It not only takes your attention every time you enter the home screen of your phone but also disappoints you since there is no notification at all.

Why do I have Instagram notifications that won’t go away?

By: Author Olin Wade (Remodel or Move Stuff)

There are several potential reasons why you may have Instagram notifications that won’t go away. Some possible reasons include:

1. You have unread notifications: It’s possible that the notifications haven’t been read yet, so they won’t go away. To remedy this, open the notifications tab in your Instagram app and check if you have any unread notifications.

If you do, go ahead and read them before they go away.

2. It’s a ‘persistent notification’: Instagram includes persistent notifications that don’t automatically go away. These persistent notifications typically appear when you have recently posted a story or photo and can often be found at the top of your notifications tab.

To get rid of this type of notification, you need to tap on the post in your Story to delete it, and the notification will go away.

3. A bug or technical issue: Sometimes, Instagram notifications that don’t go away may be indicative of a bug or technical issue. If this is the case, you may need to restart your phone or reinstall the Instagram app, as this often resolves any technical issues.

4. Your privacy settings need to be updated: If your privacy settings aren’t properly configured, notifications can remain “stuck” on your phone. To ensure that this isn’t the issue, open up the Instagram app, navigate to your profile and click on the gear icon.

From there, check your “Privacy” and “Security” settings to ensure they are properly configured and no unauthorized activity is taking place.

Overall, there are a variety of reasons why you may have Instagram notifications that won’t go away. Hopefully one of the above solutions is able to resolve the issue. If not, it’s best to contact Instagram directly for further assistance.

How do you get rid of ghost notifications on Instagram?

The best way to get rid of ghost notifications on Instagram is to first identify the cause. Ghost notifications are often caused by an app that was previously installed on your device and is still running in the background.

To fix this issue, go to the Settings section of your device and locate the application in the list of installed applications. Once you’ve found it, tap on the app and select “Force Stop” in the menu to disable the app and remove it from running in the background.

It is also possible that the issue is caused by a malfunctioning notification system. To fix this issue, go to the Settings section of your Instagram app, tap “Notifications” and turn off the “Push notification” option in the menu.

After this, you should be able to see the notifications properly.

If the problem persists, you can try uninstalling and reinstalling the Instagram app and making sure that the app is up to date at all times. This usually solves any ghost notifications issues and helps to keep the app running smoothly.

Why does my Instagram say I have a notification?

Instagram notifications are designed to let users know when something new has happened on their account, like someone has commented on their posts, tagged them in a photo or liked their posts. Instagram notifications can also alert users when they have been mentioned in a post by another user, someone has started following their account, or someone has sent them a direct message.

Additionally, notifications may alert you when IGTV is updated with new videos, when a new story may have been posted, when someone has started a live video, or when a new account feature has been released.

Instagram notifications provide users with valuable information, helping them keep up with what’s going on with their account.

Why do I get notifications but nothing there?

This can be caused by several different factors. One potential reason is that the notifications are coming from an app that you have installed, but the actual content of the notification is not available on your device.

This can sometimes happen if the app is not up to date, or if it isn’t compatible with the software version on your device. Make sure to check the app store for available updates and make sure to install any available updates to fix the issue.

Another potential cause is that there may be a glitch with the app or in the hardware, causing the notification to appear but not the actual content. You may need to delete the app or restart your device if this is the issue.

Additionally, the notifications may be coming from a messaging app or social media platform that the person sending you the message has disabled. If this is the case, you won’t be able to see any of their messages unless they reenable their account.

Overall, there are several factors that could cause this issue, so make sure to double check that the app is up to date, as well as any accounts that may be related to the notifications. If the issue persists, you may need to try restarting your device, deleting the app, or reaching out to tech support for assistance.

Why is there a message notification but no message?

That is likely due to a notification glitch, which can happen when your messaging app is not updated. If this is the case, updating the app should resolve the issue. Additionally, if you had recently deleted a message or conversation, you may still be seeing a notification for that thread even though the message is not there anymore.

Additionally, if someone had sent you a photo or video message and you have already seen it, then the notification may remain until you manually clear it or delete the thread.

Why is there a number on my Instagram icon?

The number on your Instagram icon is most likely a badge that indicates the number of notifications you have. This could include notifications related to new followers, likes, comments, messages, and more.

Some people choose to turn off this badge, as it can be a distraction, but most people find it helpful to know if there’s something new on their Instagram page. You can easily adjust the settings for this feature in the Notifications tab of your Settings on the mobile app.

Why does Instagram keep showing I have a message?

Instagram keeps showing that you have a message because the app is constantly sending notifications to users when they receive a new message. This is so users don’t miss when someone has sent them a message, whether or not they’re looking at the app.

Plus, it encourages users to stay engaged with the app.

To ensure that you’re only receiving messages that you care about and are interested in, you can customize your notifications settings in Instagram. Head to the settings and select notifications. From here you can select specific accounts, keywords, or topics to get notifications for and unselect any account whose notifications you’d like to turn off.

Also, if you don’t want to see notifications of any messages you receive at all, you can turn off ALL message notifications. This way Instagram won’t show you have a new message but you’ll still be able to see when you have a new one when you open the app.

Why does Messenger show I have an unread message when I don t?

It is possible that Messenger is showing you have an unread message when you don’t because of a few different reasons. The first possibility could be that it is simply a technical glitch and the message you received has not yet been marked as read and is still showing as unread.

Another possibility could be that a message you received has not yet loaded completely, resulting in it appearing as an unread message. Lastly, you may be receiving a notification for a message that you have already read or have previously seen.

If this is the case, it is likely that the message from the sender has been marked as “seen” but hasn’t yet been marked as “read. ” Whatever the case may be, it’s important to remember that the unread message might not be real and should not be relied on as a fact.

What is a phantom text message?

A phantom text message is a message sent through a messaging application or text messaging that appears as if it had been sent and received by the user, but was actually never sent or received. It can occur when two people using different versions of an application attempt to communicate or when a malicious user attempts to send a fake message.

Phantom text messages can cause confusion and disruption, as they can be directed to appear as if they had been sent by someone else. Additionally, when the message appears as if it had been sent and received, the recipient may be led to believe that the sender had been trying to contact them, when in actuality, the sender was not even aware that the message had been sent.

How do I see hidden messages on Messenger?

To view hidden messages in Messenger, you will need to use the secret conversation feature. This feature is only available on the Messenger mobile app, so you will need to be using the app in order to view and interact with hidden messages.

To start a secret conversation, open the Messenger app on your mobile device and select the person you want to message. Then, tap the icon with three dots in the top right corner and select “Secret Conversation.

” You will then be able to start a secret conversation with that selected contact/contacts. Any messages sent during a secret conversation are encrypted, so you can be sure that these remain private and secure.

Once you join the secret conversation, you will be able to view hidden messages sent to you by the other user in this conversation.

Why does Instagram show notifications when there are none?

Instagram may show notifications when there are none for a variety of reasons. One reason may be that your device isn’t updating correctly and showing you old notifications. Another possible reason might be that your device has a virus or other kind of malware that is sending you false notifications.

It could also be due to a bug in the app itself. To help troubleshoot this issue, try restarting your device and then opening Instagram again. If you’re still having the same issue, you may want to check for viruses and other malicious software, as well as uninstall and reinstall the app.

Finally, if you’re still running into this issue, you may want to reach out to Instagram’s Support team as they’ll be equipped to assist you further.

How do I turn off phantom notifications?

In order to turn off phantom notifications, you’ll need to understand what they are and why they occur. Phantom notifications are those that appear without you having done anything. They are typically caused by misbehaving apps that generate artificial notifications.

To turn off phantom notifications, first enter into your device’s settings and then tap on either “Notifications” or “Application Manager. ” You may need to scroll down to find this option. Once you have located it, select the app that may be creating phantom notifications and click on the “Notifications” option within the app.

On this screen, you will see a list of all your device’s notifications. Be sure to check the ones that you want to disable and untick those unwanted notifications. Now you can go ahead and select “Allow” to disable those phantom notifications.

After that, you should be all set and your gadget should no longer generate unwanted notifications.

If you are still having issues with phantom notifications, then you may want to consider disabling the app itself. You can do this by heading back to the Application Manager and selecting the “Disable” option.

This will stop the app from sending notifications to your device.

Hopefully this guide has helped you turn off phantom notifications on your devices. If you’re still having issues, then you may need to contact the manufacturer for further assistance.

How do you hide content of messages on Instagram?

Unfortunately, there is currently no way to hide the content of messages on Instagram. However, there are still some measures you can take to protect your privacy when using the app. For example, you can set your messages to disappear after they’ve been viewed, or they can be held indefinitely.

You can also adjust your account settings on Instagram to only receive messages from friends, and can adjust the settings to review any messages from people that aren’t your followers. Additionally, refrain from sharing any sensitive or personal information over the app.

Doing so will keep your private conversations safe and secure.

What are Push Notifications on Instagram?

Push notifications on Instagram are notifications that notify a user when someone interacts with their account. This includes when someone likes or comments on a post or story, follows or requests to follow, mentions in a comment, and many other interactions.

Push notifications are a way to keep users engaged with their content. They provide a way to keep up to date with any new activities and interactions with the account. Push notifications are also useful in case a user wants to know when their content is being seen, liked, or commented on.

Push notifications can be disabled or enabled at any time in a user’s account settings. They are essential to staying up to date with the Instagram community and understanding how your content is being received.

Notifications are designed to disappear after you tap on them or clear them from the phone dashboard. However, there are times when Instagram notifications refuse to go away – even after you try and locate them. There are several reasons why it may happen to you.

How To Fix an Unread Notification in Instagram That Won’t Go Away

The good news is that there are many methods you can use to remove the pesky notification. These solutions will solve the problem, though they may necessitate deleting a few things. Read on to find out more.

Why Won’t the Notification Go Away?

Most of the time this happens, Instagram isolates the notification and makes it challenging to locate. It wouldn’t be found in the main section as a result.

A less common reason is that you deactivated your account after receiving a message. The unread message should generally be accessible after scrolling down. Despite this, sometimes you’ll have a notification but no real unread messages.

Other times, it’s because you received message requests. These come from people you don’t know and won’t be in the main section. Fortunately, this one is easier to tackle.

Finally, you can also encounter these stubborn notifications when someone sends you a text but deactivates immediately after. You may get a fake notification at first, but it will “become real” when they reactivate their Instagram. That’s when you can finally look at what they sent and clear the notification.

Now that you know the reasons behind these phantom notifications, it’s time to get to the solutions.

Solutions for Stubborn Notifications

These fixes may not work alone, so we recommend trying them in the order below. None of them are complicated or require tech knowledge, so they shouldn’t take a long time.

Turn Off Instagram Notifications

The first thing you should do is turn the app notifications off. There are two ways of doing it, one from Instagram and the other using your smartphone’s system. We’ll start with the former:

ghost instagram notification

  • From then on, all notifications should disappear.

Try these steps if you wish to turn the notifications off using your phone. Note that not all devices have the same menus, so we’ll show a general guideline that you can consult. The following steps work for iPhones:

  • On your phone, go to the Settings menu.

ghost instagram notification

Android users can also use similar steps and navigate to Instagram’s app page in their Settings menu. The notification sub-menu is only slightly different. From there, you can disable notifications for all apps or just Instagram.

Restarting Your Mobile Device

Sometimes, you can tackle the problem with brute force, namely restarting your mobile device. While it isn’t a guaranteed fix, it could be a hassle-free solution.

You can either shut your phone down or initiate a restart by holding down the power button. Some devices use a slider, while others have “Shut Down” and “Reset” buttons that show up on the screen when you do.

Wait for at least a minute before turning the phone back on, as it needs some time to reset the memory. Alternatively, you can leave it somewhere safe and do something else before rebooting it.

Once you turn your phone on, the notification that refused to disappear might be gone. If not, continue using other methods to remove it.

Reinstall the Instagram App

If none of the fixes above worked, you should try uninstalling Instagram and reinstalling it. Doing so tends to refresh the app information, deleting any strange notification errors that surfaced.

ghost instagram notification

If you didn’t clear any data related to Instagram during the uninstall process, there’s a chance the notification may stay. Therefore, it’s best to do that when prompted. This problem is common for some Android devices, as iOS will automatically remove all files when you uninstall something.

Update the Instagram App

At times, this is all you need to do. There may be a bug that occurs due to your Instagram build being outdated. This issue is easy to address on both Android and Apple devices.

Here’s how to update Instagram manually on Android phones:

If the app is out-of-date, it will start updating immediately.

Apple users can benefit from these steps:

  • Look for any pending updates.

Hopefully, updating Instagram will clear the notification.

Clear the Instagram App Cache

Each app you install on your mobile device will temporarily have some storage allocated to it. These are called caches, and they help improve loading times. However, there are some occasions when caches do more harm than good.

Therefore, you should try clearing the cache on your device. It may remove the stubborn red dot on your iPhone or a dot in an Android device’s case.

Android devices make clearing caches easier, as users have been doing this for years.

ghost instagram notification

Keep in mind that not every build of Android is the same, so the steps are likely to be different. For example, an LG or Huawei phone will use slightly different processes than a Samsung Galaxy.

For iOS, try these steps:

Clearing a cache also frees up space on your phone, so we recommend doing so often.

Additional FAQ

Can you delete instagram notifications.

Yes, you can delete Instagram notifications by turning them off. While they may not immediately remove current ones, you shouldn’t see any of them appear after doing so.

Removing Persistent Errors

If all else fails, you can report the problem to Instagram’s customer support. Thankfully, reinstalling or updating the app tends to help remove these phantom error notifications. Try these fixes out individually before resorting to contacting support.

What causes ghost notifications?

The cause of phantom vibrations is not known. Preliminary research suggests it is related to over-involvement with one’s cell phone, as smartphone dependence is associated with the occurrence of phantom phone signals.

Phantom vibration syndrome or phantom ringing syndrome is the perception that one’s mobile phone is vibrating or ringing when it is not. Other terms for this concept include ringxiety (a portmanteau of ring and anxiety), fauxcellarm (a portmanteau of “faux” /fo/ meaning “fake” or “false” and “cellphone” and “alarm,” pronounced similarly to “false alarm,” and phonetom (a portmanteau of phone and “phantom”) (1) and phantom phone signals. (2) According to Michael Rothberg, the term is not a syndrome but is better characterized as a tactile hallucination since the brain perceives a sensation that is not actually present. (3) WebMD published an article on phantom vibration syndrome with Rothberg as a source. (4) Several other articles have been published in the 2010s, including in NPR, Bustle, CBS News, and Psychology Today. (5) (6) (7)(8).

Phantom ringing may be experienced while taking a shower, watching television, or using a noisy device. Humans are particularly sensitive to auditory tones between 1,000 and 6,000 hertz, and basic mobile phone ringtones often fall within this range. (1) Phantom vibrations develop after carrying a cell phone set to use vibrating alerts. (9) Researcher Michelle Drouin found that almost nine out of 10 undergraduates at her college experienced phantom vibrations. (10) (11).

In the comic strip Dilbert, cartoonist Scott Adams referred to such a sensation in 1996 as “phantom-pager syndrome”. (12) The earliest published use of the term phantom vibration syndrome dates to 2003, in an article entitled “Phantom Vibration Syndrome,” published in the New Pittsburgh Courier, written under the pen name of columnist Robert D. Jones. However, it is debated whether earlier noting of the onsets of PVS came from Michael J. Lewis of Melbourne, Australia. In the conclusion of the article, Jones wrote, “Should we be concerned about what our mind or body may be trying to tell us by the aggravating imaginary emanations from belts, pockets, and even purses? Whether PVS is the result of physical nerve damage, a mental health issue, or both, this growing phenomenon seems to indicate that we may have crossed a line in this ‘always on’ society.”.

So, if you’re ready to maintain your privacy and control your online presence, keep reading to discover the secrets of Ghost Mode on Instagram!

Key Takeaways

  • Instagram’s privacy settings offer customization options for profile visibility and activity status.
  • Ghost Mode on Instagram allows users to appear offline and browse without disturbance.
  • Disabling read receipts and hiding online status adds a sense of privacy and mystery to interactions.
  • Managing notifications allows for a more peaceful browsing experience by customizing types of notifications received and muting them for a specific period of time.

Understanding Instagram Privacy Settings

To better protect your privacy on Instagram, you can navigate through the settings like a detective, unveiling a hidden vault of options to customize who can view your profile and posts. It’s like having a secret weapon in your hands.

By tapping on the three horizontal lines at the top right corner of your profile, you can access the settings menu. From there, select ‘Privacy’ and you’ll be presented with a range of choices. You can decide who can see your posts, who can comment on them, and even who can send you direct messages.

You also have the power to control who can tag you in photos and who can view your story. With these privacy settings, you can ensure that your Instagram experience is as private as you want it to be.

Adjusting Your Activity Status

Manage your activity status by adjusting your settings to give the impression that you’re not actively engaging on the platform. This can be done by going to your Instagram profile and tapping on the three horizontal lines at the top right corner. Then, select ‘Settings’ and go to ‘Privacy.’

From there, choose ‘Activity Status’ and toggle off the ‘Show Activity Status’ option. By doing this, your followers won’t be able to see when you were last active on Instagram. Keep in mind that by disabling your activity status, you’ll also lose the ability to see when others were last active.

This can be a great way to maintain your privacy and appear offline while still being able to browse and engage on Instagram at your own pace.

Disabling Read Receipts

By disabling read receipts, you can keep your interactions on Instagram private and maintain a sense of mystery and intrigue. When read receipts are enabled, the sender of a direct message can see when you’ve read their message. This can be problematic if you want to avoid certain conversations or simply need some space.

To disable read receipts, go to your Instagram settings and click on the Privacy tab. From there, scroll down to the ‘Read Receipts’ option and toggle it off. Once disabled, others won’t be able to see when you’ve read their messages.

This gives you more control over your interactions and allows you to appear offline even when you’re active on the platform.

Hiding Your Online Status

Want to keep your online activities on the down low? Try hiding your online status on Instagram! By doing this, you can appear offline and avoid any unwanted attention.

To hide your online status, open the Instagram app and go to your profile. Tap on the three horizontal lines in the top right corner and select ‘Settings.’ From there, scroll down and tap on ‘Privacy.’ Under the ‘Connections’ section, you’ll find an option called ‘Activity Status.’ Tap on it and toggle off the ‘Show Activity Status’ button.

Once you’ve done this, your online status will be hidden, and nobody will be able to see when you were last active. Now you can browse Instagram without anyone knowing you’re online!

Managing Notifications

Tired of being bombarded with notifications on your favorite social media platform? Here’s a simple trick to take control of your Instagram alerts and have a more peaceful browsing experience.

To manage your notifications on Instagram, start by opening the app and tapping on your profile icon in the bottom right corner. Then, tap on the three horizontal lines in the top right corner to access the menu.

From there, select ‘Settings’ and then ‘Notifications’. Here, you can customize the types of notifications you receive. For example, you can choose to turn off notifications for likes, comments, and direct messages. You can also choose to mute notifications for a specific period of time, allowing you to focus on other things without being disturbed.

By managing your notifications, you can have more control over your Instagram experience and enjoy a quieter browsing session.

Going Incognito with Ghost Mode

To maintain your online privacy and hide your activity from others, you can activate the hidden feature known as Ghost Mode. This feature allows you to appear offline on Instagram while still being able to access the app and view content.

To activate Ghost Mode, simply go to your Instagram settings and scroll down to the ‘Privacy’ section. From there, you can toggle on the ‘Ghost Mode’ option. Once activated, your followers will see that you are offline and unable to receive notifications.

However, you will still be able to view and interact with posts, stories, and direct messages without alerting others of your presence. Ghost Mode is a great way to browse Instagram incognito and maintain your privacy without completely disconnecting from the app.

What to Know

  • In the Instagram app, go to your profile and tap Settings > Notifications, and choose the ones you want to receive.
  • On a desktop, go to your profile and tap Settings > Push Notifications , and make your selections.

This article explains how to get Instagram notifications in the mobile app and desktop website, how to manage email notifications, and how to receive notifications for specific accounts.

How to Get Instagram Notifications in the App

When you install Instagram, notifications are enabled by default. If you're no longer receiving notifications it could be because you turned them off in the Instagram app or by using your device's more general notification controls. Here's how to turn them back on.

Getting too many notifications? You can turn them off easily .

Open the Instagram app on your mobile device and tap the Profile icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.

On your profile page, tap the hamburger menu in the upper-right corner.

Tap  Settings  in the slide-out menu that appears.

On the  Settings  screen, tap  Notifications .

First ensure that the Pause All option is turned off (gray). If it's on, you won't receive any notifications for the time-frame you specified.

Tap Posts, Stories and Comments .

Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap Additional options in system settings .

Turn on the All Instagram notifications toggle by tapping it.

If you're an iOS user, you may have to go to Settings > Notifications and tap the Instagram app to adjust settings.

Scroll through the list of available options to individually control which notifications you want to receive.

An alternative way to adjust your notifications is to go into each category on the Notifications screen and adjust them by sub category. This gives you very granular control, but it can take some time to get through all of the different notifications. You have the option to turn notifications on From Everyone or only From People I Follow .

In the Posts, Stories and Comments section, you can enable notifications for:

  • Likes : Turn off or choose who you want to be notified about when they like a post you created.
  • Likes and Comments on Photos : Turn off or choose who you are notified about when they like or comment on photos you post.
  • Photos of You : Turn off or choose who you are notified about when they like or comment on photos in which you're tagged.
  • Comments : Turn off or choose who you are notified about when they like or comment on comments you leave on Instagram.
  • Comment Likes and Pins : Turn notifications of comment likes and pins on or off.
  • First Posts and Stories : Turn on notifications for the first post from new followers or for stories from your followers.

If you choose to go into each category and change what you do and don't receive notifications about, and if you have previously had them turned off, you're taken to the App Notification screen to turn on notifications in general the first time you try to change a setting.

How to Turn on Post Notifications in the Instagram App for Individual Accounts

Another way to control Instagram notifications is to turn them on for individual accounts. This lets you determine what you want to see from each individual user you're connected to.

Open the Instagram app and tap the search icon in the bottom navigation bar.

On the search page, tap in the Search bar and start typing the name of the person you want to receive notifications from.

Select the correct profile from the search results to go to that profile page.

Tap the bell icon in the top-right of the screen.

On this screen, you can toggle on notifications for Posts , Stories , Instagram TV , and Live Videos .

How to Turn on Instagram Notifications on a Desktop

If you're using the desktop version of Instagram, you can change your notifications there, as well.

Changing your notification preferences applies only to the device where you change them. So, if you're changing them on a desktop through a web browser, that doesn't affect the notifications you receive when using the Instagram app on your mobile device.

Open Instagram in your web browser and then click your  Profile  icon in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Choose  Settings in the menu that appears.

Select  Push Notifications .

Scroll through the list on the next screen and adjust the notifications you do or don't want to receive. Those options include:

  • Comment Likes
  • Likes and Comments on Photos of You
  • Accept Follow Requests
  • Friends on Instagram
  • Instagram Direct Requests
  • Instagram Direct
  • First Posts and Stories
  • Instagram TV View Counts
  • Support Requests
  • Live Videos

For each selection, you can either choose  On  or  Off . In some cases, you have the options for  Off ,  From People I Follow , or  From Everyone .

Once you make your selections you can return to Instagram and your new settings are automatically saved.

Changing Instagram Email Notifications

One last place you may want to adjust notifications for Instagram is in the Email and SMS category. This is where you can control the email notifications you receive. To get there, click your profile picture and then Settings > Email and SMS . Here you can select or deselect any email options you prefer. The choice are:

  • Feedback Emails
  • Reminder Email
  • Product Emails
  • News Emails
  • Emails About Shopping Brands
  • Shopping Bag Emails
  • Text (SMS) Messages

The Ghost of January 6th Haunts 2024

ghost instagram notification

By Susan B. Glasser

An upside down US flag in front of the Capitol.

Listen to this story.

The long shadow of January 6, 2021, hangs over this election. Three years after a mob of Americans stormed their own Capitol, seeking to block Joe Biden’s victory and keep Donald Trump in the White House, Biden and Trump each began 2024 with plans to make the tragic events of that day the centerpiece of his campaign. For the incumbent, it’s the rationale for his entire Presidency and the most compelling reason to give him a second term—a continuation of the “battle for the soul of America” that animated Biden’s run in 2020. For Trump, it’s the false battle cry around which he hopes to rally the MAGA mob once again. Already, he has proved that millions of his supporters are immune to the truth about January 6th. It will be an incredible act of political sorcery if he can ride his lies about the 2020 election and its violent aftermath back into the White House. And yet, as the year begins, his chances of doing so are better than even.

On Wednesday, in his first day back in the office this new year, the President hosted lunch for a group of American historians to advise him on how to frame the stakes of this election. One attendee, Heather Cox Richardson, a Civil War scholar whose latest book, “ Democracy Awakening ,” was Biden’s most conspicuous purchase during a day of post-Thanksgiving shopping, has called the visual of Trumpists parading the Confederate flag through Congress on January 6th “a gut-punch larger than any other moment in history.” Biden’s first campaign ad of the year , released on Thursday, leans heavily on the history theme, interspersing violent images of January 6th with old footage of civil-rights and suffragist marches, of Martin Luther King, Jr., and American Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima in the Second World War. “I’ve made the preservation of American democracy the central issue of my Presidency,” Biden says.

The challenge for Biden, though, is recapturing the visceral outrage of the insurrection—voters have, for years, been bombarded with horrific images of the riot and a steady drip of investigative revelations about how Trump helped conjure it into being—while imbuing it with new meaning and relevance. It is a necessary act of remembrance, but one that risks reminding Americans of how annoyed they are about a 2024 election that looks very likely to be a repeat of 2020. Is there anyone who truly relishes the prospect of Biden and Trump going at it once again, changing few minds while reinforcing for everyone how mired we remain in the division and rancor of that unpleasant year? No country would want to be stuck in such a doom loop.

But doom loop it looks to be. There is no moving on from that day so long as its instigator remains the leader of the Republican Party. In less than two weeks, Trump is on track to secure what could be the largest win in the history of the Iowa Republican caucuses. His lead is so wide that some expect him to sew up the Republican nomination by March. If and when Trump does, he will have accomplished it with a platform that doubles down on January 6th and his own sorry role in calling forth the mob. He is not denying the facts; he is outright rewriting them.

To his original Big Lie about the “rigged election” in 2020, Trump has added ever more lies. He now calls January 6th “a beautiful day” and the nearly thirteen hundred defendants arrested in connection with the attack on the Capitol martyrs and “hostages .” In recent months as he has campaigned for his return to the White House, he has dangled pardons for the insurrectionists, to be issued “on Day 1” of his second term, and threatened instead to lock up the police who tried to defend the Capitol that day. “When people who love our country protest in Washington, they become hostages unfairly imprisoned for long portions of their life,” he told a rally in Iowa last month.

This rhetoric is likely only to escalate in the course of the campaign, as Trump faces both a federal and a state trial on criminal charges connected with his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. In fourteen states, meanwhile, there is pending litigation to keep Trump off the ballot on the ground that his role in inciting the events of January 6th makes him an “insurrectionist” as defined by the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution—a matter soon to make its way to the Supreme Court since both Colorado and Maine have already disqualified him from their ballots. Trump’s legal team is also challenging the federal case against him, on the basis that his extraordinary post-2020-election acts were part of his official duties and thus covered by Presidential “immunity.” One thing we can pretty much say for sure about 2024 is that not a day will go by without the ghost of January 6th echoing loudly in our courtrooms and in our politics.

Another sad but inescapable truth is that Trump’s January 6th revisionism has proved even more politically salient with the Republican electorate than anyone could have predicted on the day itself. Remember all those panicky texts to the White House, begging Trump to call off the mob? “He is destroying his legacy,” Laura Ingraham warned Mark Meadows , Trump’s chief of staff. Even Don, Jr., begged Meadows to intervene: “He’s got to condemn this shit. Asap.” But Trump, it turns out, knew better. A Washington Post /University of Maryland survey published this week found that, in the intervening three years, the number of Republicans who believe Trump’s lies about a “rigged election” has, in fact, gone up. Today, only thirty-one per cent of Republicans believe that Biden is the “legitimate” President, down from thirty-nine per cent in late 2021. The number of Republicans, meanwhile, who believe that Trump personally bears “a great deal” or “a good amount” of responsibility for the events of January 6th has gone down from twenty-seven per cent two years ago to just fourteen per cent today. The right-wing media ecosystem has been so effective in pumping out Trump’s propaganda that the Post /Maryland poll found thirty-four per cent of Republicans now say they believe the bogus conspiracy theory that the F.B.I. itself was responsible for inciting the attack on the Capitol.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned in recent years about Trump’s hold over the G.O.P., it’s this: where his voters go, eventually, even the Republican holdouts in Congress will follow. On Wednesday, Trump was endorsed by House Majority Whip Tom Emmer—barely two months after Trump sank Emmer’s candidacy for the House Speakership, with a social-media post warning that Emmer would be a “tragic mistake” and calling him a “Globalist RINO ” who was “totally out-of-touch” with Republican voters. One reason for Trump’s animus? Emmer had voted to certify Biden’s election on January 6th. “They always bend the knee,” the Times quoted Trump as saying of Emmer’s act of self-abasement.

Lesson learned: there is no political future in the G.O.P. without bowing to even Trump’s mightiest lies. The Republicans’ modern-day political alchemist has, in just three years, made 2020-election denialism—and its corollary set of falsehoods about January 6th—a core tenet in the Republican catechism. Who’s to say where this will all end up? The prospect of Trump restored as President, back in the Oval Office on January 20, 2025, pardoning himself and all the other “hostages” seems a lot more real than it did three years ago.

Usually, it’s the winning side that dictates how history will be written. No wonder Biden has started this campaign year by calling in the historians. ♦

  • A market prophet says the S&P 500 could crash 30%, and a recession is probably underway.
  • Gary Shilling doubts the Fed will cut interest rates before summer, but sees a return to 1% or 2%.
  • Shilling prefers Treasuries to gold, predicts earnings will weaken, and expects many more layoffs.

Insider Today

The S&P 500 could plummet 30%, a US recession may already be underway, and the Federal Reserve is unlikely to cut interest rates before the summer, a legendary market prophet has warned.

Gary Shilling, who served as Merrill Lynch's first chief economist before launching his own consulting firm over 45 years ago, delivered the dour outlook on a Rosenberg Research webcast in late December. He rang the alarm on company earnings, touted government debt over gold, and predicted layoffs would accelerate in the months ahead.

Shilling is known for making several correct calls in decades past, but financial markets and the economy have defied his dour forecasts in recent years. Here are his 10 best quotes from the webcast, lightly edited for length and clarity:

1. "I think we still can have a 25% or 30% decline in the S&P."

(The delayed impacts of the Federal Reserve's hikes to interest rates, and pressure on corporate profits this year, threaten to drive the benchmark US stock index as low as 3,300 points or its lowest level since the fall of 2020, Shilling said.)

2. "I like Treasurys. They're about the best credit in the world. If you worry about the federal government going broke, you better get your gold bars and AK-47 and a cave to go in."

3. "I just have never had any interest in gold. It has so many forces that push the price around: political risk, inflation, deflation, mining, what the central banks are doing, and so on. A lot of the time, those forces must basically cancel each other out."

4. "I think we're probably in a recession now. NBER wait until they get all the data in, the revisions, and everything else. By the time they make the call, it's about as handy as a pocket in your underwear."

(Shilling was referring to the National Bureau of Economic Research, a private organization that officially calls recessions, usually several months after they start.)

5. " Soft landings are pretty rare. There's only been one in the entire post-war period and that was in the mid-90s. I define a soft landing as the Fed raising its target rate and then lowering it with no recession. A soft-landing forecast is bucking history."

6. "Small businesses don't tend to have deep pockets. They've got to be very sensitive to economic conditions, financial conditions. When you see them cutting way back on their hiring plans, that tells you that there is trouble out there." (Shilling was highlighting recent surveys showing small-business owners are worried about the economy and scaling back their expansion goals.)

7. "We're seeing weakening in profits. We're seeing weakness in employment. Of course, it's a much more drawn-out situation than normal because employers had such a devil of a time hiring people, that it's taking them an awful lot of blows of the two-by-four to the head to shift gears into firing."

(He was suggesting that labor shortages during the pandemic have made companies loath to conduct layoffs.)

8. "I don't think that they are permanent reprieves. I think they are simply delays."

(Shilling argued the economy has been shored up by government programs and employers' reluctance to fire workers, but dwindling pandemic savings, mounting credit-card bills, and rising debt delinquencies signal a downturn ahead.)

9. "There's been an awful lot of overenthusiasm. There's been front-running of the Fed, which is probably not going to do anything on the downside in rates until probably the middle of the year. Meanwhile, the economy is probably going to continue to weaken, and there's more and more evidence of a recession. The feeling that it's going to be a sudden cut and that there is a soft landing … I think both those are going to be disappointed."

10. "I don't see any reason why the Fed isn't going to knock the funds rate down to close to where it was when we started."

(Rates have jumped from nearly zero to over 5%, but they're likely to return to 1% or 2%, Shilling said.)

Gypsy Rose Blanchard 's former neighbors are being haunted by the past -- an onslaught of tourists is descending on the Springfield, MO home where she and her now ex-boyfriend slayed her mother, Dee Dee .

Interest in the case has been reignited following Gypsy's recent prison release . One neighbor, named Tonia , tells TMZ ... loads of people with out-of-state license plates are stopping in the middle of the road to take pics of the house.

However, some tourists are struggling to find it, because it was repainted from pink to blue following the murder, and the wheelchair ramp Gypsy used has been removed.

As a result, they've been asking neighbors to direct them to the right house -- but, Tonia confessed she once refused to provide details to protect the new mother/daughter duo living there.

Waiting for your permission to load TikTok Post.

Meanwhile, Thomas Pengilly -- another neighbor -- says the whole ordeal has been stressful, and he's convinced some people might show up with bad intentions ... saying the home should've been torn down.

His advice for others hoping to catch a glimpse of the infamous home is find better things to do in life than relive someone's trauma and pain.

Sam Baker is also fuming ... telling TMZ the commotion in the neighborhood has been aggravating, with traffic doubling on the block.

Sam's concerned for her kids playing outside 'cause people aren't paying attention to the speed limit, and also stop in the middle of the road for photos.

Habitat for Humanity actually gifted the home to Gypsy and her mother ... after DD falsely claimed they were victims of Hurricane Katrina.

While her old neighborhood is getting constant reminders of the past, Gypsy's focusing on the future with her husband Ryan , becoming a social media sensation and hoping to promote prison reform with Kim K 's help.
