YEMA Yachtingraf – THE COMPENDIUM

Yema – a wellknown brand in France, got a eventful history with some take-over. In the 60s Yema produced 300.000 watches per year.

1963 was launched the “Superman”, a 300m water-resistant Watch for professional diver.

1966/67 sold about 400.000 Yema watches. 1968 they constructed the 200m water-resistant Yachtingraf, with Valjoux movement.

The company still exist in other hands till today and produced Yachting watches with Quartz movement in the 80s till now. The Team of the Americas Cup (Marc Pajot, 1991) took the time with Yema watches for example.

But here is the overview of the Yachtingraf watches with real movements.  Feel free to send all comments, facts and things about them if you can add some information please!

Yachtingrafs with differend brand on the dial.

Some dials are known with different brands printed on.

Interesting one found on eBay in Uruguay – Yachtingraf with brand LIDER. Serial doesn´t fit in the line of 2compax Yachtingrafs.

Lider seems to be a brand of Borel Fiels & Cie. SA from Neuchatel, Switzerland or Montres Leader SA. Keep on research.

About the quality and known issues of Yema Yachtingraf watches

Just my point of view, please. Feel free to send my comments if you know something better. Just in case you looking for one to buy these points may help you. The Yema Yachtingraf watches got mostly problems on:

– pushers (not available, normaly screwed in but mostly glued with metall glue) – lumen (uneven made) and many are bad relumed – cases often polished to death – glasses not to find as NOS, no good substitutes – hands are not to find if there are not the original ones – dials could have paintloss or paint bumpinesses (subdials left too!) – bakelitbezels are mostly losses the paint (but that´s not a yema thing alone) – Alubezels are mostly sold as NOS on ebay from France as 70s, they fit perfect and looks good. You can see if it is a “NOS” one on the green triangle at 12, it looks different to the old ones – numbers on the casebacks: different, earlier seems to be upcounting, later ones got mostly the same numbers, unsure about some numbers too (Yema seems to put the numbers on other models too, still to prove) – unbranded bridges / movements – maybe an advantage for doing the service but you will never know if the movement is original built in the watch, only some LeJour got signed bridges

About the different mounted regattahands on the subdial

Wonder why 50% of all bubbles looks to 12 and the other half looks to 6? Simple explaination but very good usability for different types of the regatta countdown (5/10 or 15 min) you find here at the Club Yema , Jerry found out!

About the movements

Just to know: Valjoux 7730 is the 1966 following movement to the Venus 188 (built from 1948-1966) after the take-over of Venus from Valjoux in 1966. The main difference is the cheaper cam-switching instead of high-end column wheel. Yema was one of the first that uses the Valjoux 7730/7734/7736 as substitute for Valjoux 92/72.

Variants: height: 6,00/6,65 mm | diameter 14 line (31mm) | 45 hrs power reserve | 17 rubins | 28.900 A/h (4Hz) – all variants were built over 2Mio. pieces

7730: basic version, built 1966 – 1973, 175k pieces 7731: like 7730 but with new balance piston 7733: redesigned 7731 in 1969 with different reset hammers 7733S: 7733 with regatta-module disc drive 7734: date wheel, not quickset 7736: chronograph with 12 hrs counter (built 1969-1978) 7737: with 10min regatta countdown (for example in Memosail)

Trying to specify the production years with movements for the Yachtingrafs. Help is needed here for the research.

first to last:

1966 – ???? V92 1966/67 – ???? V7730 (following V92) and later 7733 (starting when 1969 with launch of the movement – ????) 1966/67 – ???? V7734 Date 1966/67 – ???? V72 Croisiere 1969 – ???? V7736 (following the V72 Croisiere) 1969/70 – ???? 7733S Regate “white ship” 1970 – ???? 7733S Regate “blue ship”

Next to the Yachting Chronographs there are the well-known Car-Racing Chronographs – the Rallygraf and the Chronograph for the pilots Flygraf (1970).

WATCH REVIEWS, NEWS, AND GUIDES

Yema Watches: A Comprehensive Guide

yema yachtingraf history

In a world where Swiss and Japanese watches are abundant, it is difficult to find established brands from a different background. Which is why, in this article, we’ll get to know one of the most esteemed watch manufacturers of French descent, Yema Watches.

Yema Watches: What You Need to Know

Yema Watches History

It all began in 1948 when Henry Louis Belmont turned his dreams into reality by founding Yema , his very own timepiece company. After graduating at the top of his class, Belmont created the brand with the goal of representing French craftsmanship in the watchmaking world. Today, 70 years after its foundation, Yema has become one of the most established French watch companies out there. However, before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s first delve into the different milestones in the brand’s history.

Yema Watches: 1960s – 1980s

Yema Watches History 2

In 1963, the first-ever Yema Superman model was introduced to the world. Especially designed for divers, it featured the iconic bezel-lock and a water resistance of up to 300m. It was also used by pilots from the French Air Force, further solidifying its reputation as a reliable watch.

Three years later, Yema became the leading French watch exporter, a title they would continue to hold until 1968. This meant that, annually, they sold over 500,000 watches worldwide.

It was during the same year that the brand came out with the Yema Yachtingraf . Just based on its name, you’ll know that this model caters to those who enjoy sailing. It is a chronograph watch with an automatic movement and a 200m water resistance. The brand would continue to create pieces based on this in the years to come.

Along with the release of the Yachtingraf came the launch of the Yema Rallygraf as well. However, this timepiece was created for those into automobile racing. Numerous variations of the Yachtingraf exists, one of which was actually worn by Mario Andretti himself, a former Formula 1 driver.

Aside from racing and water sports, Yema also has milestones related to outer space and polar quests. In 1982, the Yema Spationaute 1 became the first French watch on space. It was worn by Jean-Loup Chrétien during his 10-day expedition. Meanwhile, in 1986, Yema created a tool-watch to accompany Jean-Louis Etienne for his 800km journey across the North Pole.

Present-Day Yema Watches

Yema Watches History 3

The brand’s involvement with space missions did not stop with the Spationaute . In celebration of France’s 10th astronaut mission, the Proxima, Yema collaborated with the (French) National Centre for Space Studies to create the Spacegraf back in 2017.

Ultimately, this shows that years of being the chosen watch company by many institutions and professionals have paved the way for Yema to be the esteemed French brand they are today.

A Closer Look at Yema Watch Collections

Now that we know more about Yema’s involvement in different fields, we can better understand the watch lines they offer. At present, the brand has a total of 12 collections divided into four different categories: diving, motorsports, space & aviation, and digital .

There are 5 collections under the diving category: Marine Nationale, Heritage Diving, Bronze, GMT, and Heritage Quartz.

This does not have any implication on its durability as it will still boast utmost precision over time. With a price range of $990 USD to $1700 USD, lasting elegant design and high performance come hand in hand when talking about this series.

4. Yema GMT

2. Yema French Air Force

Yema French Air Force

The French Air Force collection is one born out of an enduring relationship with the aforementioned military institution. The brand was their chosen supplier of military grade watches back in the 1970s. In 2020, Yema released a selection of new models in celebration of their renewed partnership. Lastly, these watches range from $500 USD to $1200 USD.

4. Yema Zero G Line

Yema Zero G Line

As seen in their history, the brand has been supplying watches to French astronauts since the 1980s. The current Spacegraf models, priced under $450 USD, are an anniversary tribute to the institution’s groundbreaking flights.

Digital

Lastly, the digital category consists of the Yema Digidisc and Yema LED collections.

1. Yema Digidisc

Yema Digidisc

The Yema Digidisc was launched in the 1970s. The concept of a watch with a revolving disc captured the attention of many people all around the world. The current pieces, priced at $590 USD, make use of an in-house calibre with a semi-digital time display.

2. Yema LED

Yema LED

Meanwhile, the Yema LED is the brand’s way of venturing out to more typical digital watches. It is Yema’s first collection with an LED display and is a tribute to the legendary quartz revolution. Moreover, the range consists of   Yema LED Gold at $280 USD and the YEMA LED Silver at $249 USD.

Yema Watches’ Selling Points

Here are some reasons why Yema watches are definitely worth buying.

Impressive In-house Calibers

Manufacturing your own calibre is definitely not an easy feat even for watch brands that have been in the industry for decades now.   In 2009, Yema launched the MPB1000, which was their first in-house mechanical calibre. Since then, it has powered thousands of timepieces in their arsenal. However, they did not stop there. The brand also came out with the Yema 2000 and Yema 3000 which are impressive calibers designed and assembled in France. It is worth noting that these movements are at par with Swiss and Japan-made calibers.

French Craftsmanship At Its Finest

We all know that the brand was founded with the idea of representing French craftsmanship when it comes to watchmaking. The best part is they succeeded and, now, Yema watches are perceived as one of the best things that France has to offer. While Swiss and Japanese watches are still abundant, it is admirable how Yema is able to compete with other brands whilst further showcasing the French art of watchmaking to the world.

Privilège by Yema

This is Yema’s loyalty program that you can be a part of as soon as you make your first purchase. There are different membership tiers which correspond to certain storewide discounts. Some other benefits include: 24/7 customer service, VIP membership cards, early access, 2-year international warranty, etc.

Avant-garde Designs

Considering their rich history with active professionals from different fields, it is only expected that their concept revolves around progressive watchmaking in all aspects. This is something obviously present in the designs of Yema watches. Whether it is a Heritage Diving piece or a Yema LED model, it boasts the same avant-garde yet classic stylistic elements. Ultimately, there are only a few brands out there that can perfectly represent both quintessential and modern details in their watches and Yema is one of them.

Diverse Prices

After knowing the history of the brand and revelling in its unparalleled quality, one would expect sky high prices for a Yema watch. However, one of the greatest things about them is the diversity of prices they offer while exhibiting excellent craftsmanship. With a price range of approximately $300 USD to $3000 USD, you’re bound to find the ideal Yema that fits your criteria.

Must-Have Yema Watches

Now that we’ve established why you should consider getting your own Yema watch, here are some of the best models in their current catalogue.

1. Yema Superman Heritage Blue (YSUP2018B-GMS)

Yema Superman Heritage Blue (YSUP2018B-GMS)

First up, we have a piece from Yema’s Heritage Diving collection. The Superman Heritage Blue is a modern-day recreation of the original model. Right off the bat, it gives off that robust and powerful vibe expected of a diving watch. Best thing is you don’t even have to be a diver to appreciate this classic piece because it would look good any where and any time.

Specifications

The Superman Heritage Blue comes in a polished 316L stainless steel case and bracelet. The deep blue dial consists of luminescent square markers, shovel hands, and a date window at 3 o’clock. It also features a sapphire glass bezel with a unique bezel-lock mechanism. Moreover, it has a domed crystal   that allows for better readability thanks to its light magnifying lens.   Each of these components, from the anti-corrosion steel to the aforementioned bezel-lock, were used to create the ideal diving watch.

In terms of technicalities, this Yema watch is powered by a Swiss Sellita SW200-1 movement. Aside from its accuracy and precision, the calibre also offers an excellent power reserve of 38 hours. Lastly, like most diving watches, it has a water resistance of up to 300m. This definitely is one of the most reliable and versatile Yema watches for men in the market. Regardless of whether you’re into water sports or not, the Yema Superman Heritage Blue would make a great addition to your collection.

2. Yema Superman Worldtime GMT Coke (YGMT21B39-CMS)

Yema Superman Worldtime GMT Coke (YGMT21B39-CMS)

The Superman Worldtime GMT Coke is a professional diving watch under Yema’s GMT collection. It takes inspiration from their Hattori era back in the 1990s, making it one of the brand’s most distinct watches. At first glance, you’ll immediately get a retro vibe largely because of the colours and overall design. This is the perfect vintage model for both divers and watch connoisseurs alike.

This Superman Worldtime GMT Coke comes in a brushed 316L stainless steel case and bracelet. Its matte black dial includes oversized hands and hour markers with a luminous coat. These elements contribute to the high visibility of the watch when used underwater. Moreover, it also features a two-toned GMT bezel in red and black, hence the name, along with the iconic bezel-lock mechanism.

Another notable thing about the Superman Worldtime GMT Coke is that it is the brand’s first watch to be   powered by the GMT in-house calibre YEMA3000. Furthermore, it runs on a GMT automatic movement with a power reserve of 42 hours. Another addition to its impressive qualities is its water resistance of up to 300m. More than just a diving watch, this model is perfect for jet setters as it can also track three timezones. Nothing short of reliable and classic, this Yema watch is where vintage and functionality meet.

3. Yema Navygraf Marine Nationale Femme (YMHFMN34-GM)

Yema Navygraf Marine Nationale Femme (YMHFMN34-GM)

Next up, we have a lovely Yema ladies’ watch from their Marine Nationale collection. The Navygraf Marine Nationale Femme is a more dainty interpretation of the 1970s Navygraf model. It also happens to be the first official watch for women in the French Navy. It is a very chic watch that would look amazing both on a dress and a uniform.

This model comes in a polished 316L stainless steel case and bracelet. The strap is made out of mesh for more ease of use and flexibility. Moreover, its matte blue dial includes luminescent hands and hour markers. Everything about this model, from the colours to the case back, is inspired by the Marine Nationale. Lastly, the Navygraf Marine Nationale Femme follows a quartz movement with a water resistance of up to 100m. This is definitely a functional yet stylish watch for all the ladies out there.

SECOND GENERATION QUARTZ MODELS

In the mid 1970’s the first quartz movements were introduced, and Yema decided to invest heavily in the research and development of new models with a quartz movement. This resulted in the second generation of the Yema Yachtingraf in 1977.

From 1988 until 2004 the Japanese Seiko Watch Corporation was the owner of Yema. The Yema company was then bought back by French investers and renamed as ‘Yema Horlogère Maison Francaise 1948’. For that reason a Seiko movement is used in a Yema watch during 88-94. In 1992 Yema sponsored the French team as competitor at the America’s Cup, with the launch of the Yema Yachtingraf America’s Cup France with a Seiko quartz movement.

Regatta Yachttimers

An overview of sailing regatta watches.

The only French brand in this regatta-yachttimer overview is Yema. Founded in 1948 in Besançon (Doubs) by Henry Louis Belmont, the company distinguished itself in the very beginning by creating the first automatic chronometers manufactured entirely in France. The brand became fairly popular in France in the 1960’s and 1970’s with both consumer and military sales, including the watches related to the French space missions!

On March 3, 1967  Henry L. Blum of Montres Yema S.A. filed a patent for a ‘Watch for Yachting and Underwater use’ . You can download the complete Swiss patent (CH 483.047) as a PDF here , or here if you prefer English (USA 3,427,800).

Yema patent US3,427,800 filed by H.L. Blum.

This resulted in the introduction of the Yema Yachtingraf   in 1966. All together 6 different models (7 if you count type 6 in standard or jumbo case as two) of the Yachtingraf  were sold between 1966 and 1970. Type 1 (Valjoux 92), type 2 ( Valjoux 7733 or 7734) and type 3 (Valjoux 7734 with date) have a subdial counting the seconds at 9 o’clock, and an oversized 30 minutes subdial at 3 o’clock, divided into 6 differently coloured segments representing 5 minutes each.

Yema Yachtingraf, 3 versions, 3 different calibers.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf – type 1.

  • Reference: the first model, rare, two subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 92 movement.
  • Case size: Ø 38 mm
  • Year: 1966.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf – type 2.

  • Reference: two subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7733 / 7734 movement.
  • Year: 1966/1967.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf  – type 3.

  • Reference: two subdials, and a date window at 6 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7734 movement.

Type 4 and 5, the Yachtingraf Croisière models, have an extra third subdial at 6 o’clock with a 12 hour register. By means of a red cross over this subdial it counts double, up to 24 hours. Type 6 has an indicator disk underneath the dial, for an optimum countdown.

And the Yema Yachtingraf versions 4, 5 and 6.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf Croissière – type 4.

  • Reference: 92 001L. Silver subdial at 9 o’clock, third subdial at 6 o’clock,
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 72 movement.
  • Year: 1969.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf Croissière   – type 5.

  • Reference: 9314. Black subdial at 9 o’clock, third subdial at 6 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7736 movement.
  • Case size: Ø 38 mm.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf Régate  – type 6.

  • Reference: with a special indicator disk in stead of a hand.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7733S movement.
  • Case size: either normal case Ø 39 mm or jumbo size Ø 44 mm.
  • Year: 1970.

The Yema Yachtingraf Régate was available in two different case sizes, the first one with the black logo at 6 o’clock measuring Ø 39 mm and with a tachymeter along the outer edge of the dial, and a second version with the blue logo at 6 o’clock measuring Ø 44 mm. The last one is also referred to as Régate – Jumbo.

How the countdown function works:

Definitely type 6 is the most interesting one. It has a 15 minutes register at 3 o’clock, and a smal indicator disk that rotates under a special cut-out in the dial. The indicator disk moves every 30 seconds, jumping half a minute further to the start of the race.

The Yema Yachtingraf Régate has the crown to set the time at 3 o’clock and two pushers for the countdown function. One pusher at 2 o’clock for start/stop, and one pusher at 4 o’clock for reset.

After a reset the countdown subdial shows 1-2-3-4-5 and red in the 6th small window. When the chronograph is activated at the first gunshot the countdown starts and the big white sweep hand is set in motion clockwise. After 30 seconds the indicator disk moves half a minute, and so it does again after 60 seconds, now showing 0-1-2-3-4. A slide bar shows the first minute in blue. After the first 5 minutes of the countdown, when the second gunshot is fired, the 6th window in the dial takes over the countdown: 5 more minutes to go.

Again one minute later, with another 4 more minutes to go, the first window is showing red. Three minutes later, only 1 more minute to go, and 4 windows showing red. Then, as the final gunshot sounds, all 5 windows are red and the 6th window shows 0. Off you go!

Yema advertisement with the Yachtingraf-Croisière.

Variations:

The Yema Yachtingraf’s are unmistakable recognizable by their big colorful minutes countdown subdial, which is also well described in the patent listed above. And although they are not related to Yema in any way, several smaller watch brands have used the same subdial for a Yachting version of their watch. Probably with a license by Yema for the dial layout. The only exeption is the brand Le Jour, which was actually the North American rebranded distributer for Yema in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Here are some examples:

Branded Alsta Le Jour Yachtingraf , Le Jour Yachtingraf   (US version) and Thermidor De Luxe Yachtingraf :

Branded Puerto Azul (without it’s bezel),  Technos Sportsgraph  (with a Landeron 248 movement) and Relide Spacemaster :

Branded Yachting Chronograph  (Valjoux 7733),  Jaques-Droz and Gallet :

Branded Datzward Seamagnum (Valjoux 7730), Lider Yachtingraf   (Valjoux 7733) and La Martine   (Valjoux 7733):

Branded Lunich Watch (Valjoux 7733), Dichi Watch (Valjoux 7730) and Wingo :

In the mid 1970’s the first quartz movements were introduced, and also Yema decided to invest heavily in the research en development of new models with a quartz movement. This resulted among others in the second (quartz) generation of the Yema Yachtingraf   in 1977.

In 1982 John Henry Belmont Jr. takes over as CEO of Yema from his father. But he has other plans with the company, and decided to sell Yema in 1988 to the Japanese Seiko Watch Corporation. In 1995 Yema became a subsidiary to the Hattori-Seiko group under the name Yema S.A. It’s obvious that many of the Seiko movements are used in a Yema watch during that period.

In 1992 Yema is sponsoring the French team with skipper and helmsman Marc Pajot as competitor fort her America’s Cup (with yacht Ville de Paris).  For that occasion Yema launches the  America’s Cup France , with a Seiko 8M35 quartz regatta movement.

And a third movement with two pushers at 8 and 10 o’clock:

From a more recent date are the Yema Yachting   models with an ISA 8270 movement, also quartz:

In 2004 the Yema brand is purchased by its CEO Louis Eric Beckensteiner, with financial help of the French Montres Ambre, a watchmaking and jewelry company. That makes Yema a 100% French watch brand again, with the name being changed into ‘Yema Horlogère Maison Francaise 1948’.

For their 70th anniversary Yema announces in 2018 the Heritage collection, to pay tribute to the brand’s most iconic timepieces: a Superman, a Rallygraf, a Yachtingraf and a Flygraf. The Yema Yachtingraf Heritage is an almost identical copy of the Yachtingraf Crossière (type 5) from 1969. The first 1948 watches will be numbered.

Little History of YEMA

Watchmaking, the french way.

yema yachtingraf history

Henry Louis Belmont founded YEMA in 1948, in Besançon, in the Doubs, the cradle of French watchmaking. According to legend, the name, which sounds Greek, was born from the imagination of a teenager during a competition organised by the founder himself. The manufacture quickly enjoyed great success on the international scene, since in 1966, and for three consecutive years, Yema was the leading French watch exporter, with more than 500,000 models delivered to more than 50 countries. In the United States, it was under the name “LEJOUR”, an export brand, that Yema established itself on the wristwatch market. Today, its workshops are located in Morteau in Franche Comté.

Yema’s story is a story of technical advances. The brand’s models are both markers of the history of watchmaking and also of human adventure, as they follow all the exploits of the second half of the 20th century. Indeed, these watches are intended for professionals: diving watches, pilot’s watches, astronaut’s watches, car racers’ watches. The key words of the brand are reliability and robustness.

YEMA RALLYE

The conquest of the seas

In 1963, the Superman was born. The watch is reputed to be “unbreakable” with an automatic movement (ETA 2452 calibre) and offers a water resistance of 300m and a steel “bezel block”. An icon! Especially since it equipped the “PLOUFS” (helicopter rescue divers) of the French Air Force. Always at the service of diving professionals, in 1966, Yema produced the Yachtingraf: a chronograph with a Valjoux 92 mechanical movement, water-resistant to 200 m, indicating the regatta time.

This model was chosen at the beginning of 1970, by the French Sailing Yachting Federation, as supplier of the French Sailing Team for the next four years. The French team therefore went to the 1972 Olympic Games with a yatchingraf on its wrist.

yema yachtingraf history

The conquest of the circuits

In the same year, in the golden age of motor sport competitions, the Rallygraf was released. This is the model worn by the driver Mario Andretti, a true legend in the history of racing. He won 111 victories, including the Daytona 500, the Indianapolis 500 and finally the Formula 1 World Championship.

yema yachtingraf history

The conquest of the skies

In 1978, the company set out to conquer the skies by producing its “patent pending” Flygraf. This is a chronograph with an automatic movement equipped with an ETA 7750 and is above all a tool for specialists. For example, its logarithmic bezel allowed pilots to make various calculations concerning altitude, speed, distances or fuel consumption.

New challenge in the 1980’s: Yema launches into the realisation of the Spationaute 1 which left on June 24, 1982, on the wrist of the French astronaut, Jean-Loup Chrétien, for a 10-day trip into space.

yema yachtingraf history

French excellence

Finally, in May 1986, the North Pole was developed to accompany Jean-Louis Etienne as he set off on the road to the North Pole. An odyssey of more than 800km where he wore this titanium watch, designed with a system avoiding magnetic north and the four cardinal points.

2017, back into space. Yema in collaboration with CNES (National Center for Space Studies) is developing a model in honour of the Proxima mission. This proves that the excellence of French watchmaking still survives.  And these professional watches are legitimate since some of the greatest contemporary explorers are ambassadors for the brand: the pilot Pierre Sancinena, the photographer David Templier, and the navigator Michel Desjoyeaux.

This Popular Vintage Chronograph Watch Is Back — in Bronze

The Yema Yachtingraf resurrects a watch from 1966, but adds some modern twists.

yema

By Zen Love

Regatta-style chronograph watches often stand out from the pack due to their colorful subdials — and you don’t have to race sailboats to appreciate this quirky but purposeful look that fascinates vintage watch collectors. Timepieces made specifically for timing regattas began proliferating in the 1950s , and Yema’s examples from the 1960s have long stood out.

Now, Yema has resurrected a 1966 model for 2021. Unlike those older models, though, the latest watches pack some modern twists — not least of which is a bronze case and 300m of water resistance.

best chronograph watches

Why the distinctive looks? Yacht races begin with a five-minute dash toward the starting line that has to be carefully timed; if you jump the gun and your vessel crosses the line early, you’re penalized. That’s why the Yachtingraf’s subdial is clearly broken into five-minute segments, resulting in an asymmetric look and a pop of color on the dial. (The watch’s running seconds subdial at 3 o’clock is much smaller than the yachting subdial.)

Yema captures the vintage regatta chronograph vibe well, but the watch likely won’t be mistaken for an actual vintage piece. Why? For starters, its 40mm brushed case is made of bronze, a material which simply wasn’t “a thing” in watchmaking back then . There’s also the fact that the chronograph subdial in question is at 9 o’clock rather than 3 o’clock as on vintage Yema Yachtingrafs.

Then, there are updates that are expected of reissues, such as sapphire crystal and a modern movement. Here, said movement is the same Seiko NE86 automatic chronograph caliber — automatic chronographs weren’t a thing yet in 1966, either — that powers the brand’s recent reissue of its motorsport chronograph, the Speedgraf . (It’s an interesting but still uncommon movement, even within Seiko’s own product lines .) Finally, water resistance of 300m essentially makes this a diver’s chronograph — although its bezel seems more geared toward general travel with its 12-hour markings.

When Yema reissued the Yachtingraf previously , it had an ETA 7750 movement, a steel case and a significantly higher price. When compared to the Speedgraf, the Yachtingraf’s premium features (case material, water resistance, etc.) make its mere $200 price difference seem very reasonable. You can pre-order one of the 200 limited-edition examples directly from Yema now for $1,699.

Yema Debuts a Surprising Tourbillon to Celebrate their 75th Anniversary

Celebrating 75 years in business, French watchmakers Yema have recently released their Yachtingraf Tourbillon Maréographe, a tribute to classic design and Franco-Swiss watchmaking mastery. Ringing in a milestone is never an easy feat; but, somehow, Yema has been able to accomplish not only a timeless design, but something that showcases the pursuit of excellence that has defined the brand over the course of its history.

yema yachtingraf history

Don’t let the plain black and steel (or bronze) design fool you – this watch is anything but simple. Yema has incorporated a balance between yachting heritage design and function to show what this watch is capable of – while also doing it with a certain je nais sais quoi , courtesy of a somewhat unexpected tourbillon caliber. The tourbillon is visible at the 6 o’clock mark, giving one an interior look into the precision mechanisms of this masterpiece. Opposite that, at the 12 hour, the Maréographe has a unique lunar time complication with a display of tide cycles, complete with a decorative bearing the traditional Yema “Y” logo. While maybe not part of your day-to-day needs, it’s nonetheless a showing of Yema’s technical capabilities and a bit of a unique offering for an important anniversary.

yema yachtingraf history

This watch measures in at 42.5 mm, giving it a sense of presence on the wrist that matches the various finishes of the design. The rotating bezel is beautifully crafted with additional scratch protection, while the double-domed sapphire crystal will surely keep up with day-to-day wear.

yema yachtingraf history

The star of the show is the CMM.30tourbillon caliber, which carries a whopping four day power reserve at just over 105 hours and is said to accurate to within -3/+7 seconds per day. To top it all off, the Yachtingraf Tourbillon Maréographe has 10 ATM water-resistance, high anti-magnetic resistance (2,000 Gauss) and shock-resistance (5,000G). For a statement piece, it’s a watch that’s meant to be worn and loved – on any adventure you find yourself in.

yema yachtingraf history

The watch is available now for preorder with shipping scheduled for January 2024. Priced at $9,990 for either their steel or bronze case variations, the watch is available now via Yema’s website . This release is limited to just 75 numbered pieces in each metal, so act fast if the Yachtingraf Tourbillon Maréographe has caught your eye.

YEMA'S STORY

1948 - henry louis belmont .

In 1948 Henry Louis Belmont, a methodical and pioneer French watchmaker, created his own watchmaking company under the name of Yema , Mr Belmont graduated top of his class from the National Watchmaking School of Besançon in 1931. The story goes that the name of the brand was born of the imagination of a teenager in a school contest organised by Henry Louis Belmont himself. Without realising it, the young student imagined a name that would become synonymous with fine French watchmaking.

1963 - YEMA SUPERMAN, THE BIRTH OF A MYTH

We must go back to 1963 to discover the very first Yema Superman . A watch first developed for diving professionals thanks to its 300 meters waterproofing and safety brake stop (or bezel-lock) made it distinctive and unique. Considered indestructible, the Superman was at the time chosen by the French Air Force to equip its pilots.

1966 - BIRTH OF THE YACHTINGRAF

Yema produced in 1966, the first Yema Yachtingraf , especially designed for the sailing world. This automatic chronograph (Valjoux movement), waterproof to 200 meters, indicated the regatta time. There have been up to 6 different versions of this model over the years.

1966 - BIRTH OF THE RALLYGRAF

The first model of Yema Rallygraf,  also saw the day in 1966 and was especially designed for the world of car racing. One of these chronographs was worn by Formula 1 driver Mario Andretti. There exist several variations of dials for this mythical model.

1966 - YEMA INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION

In the late 60's Yema became the leading French Watch Exporter  for three years consecutively (1966, 1967 and 1968) with more than 500,000 watches sold every year across 50 countries.

1982 - FIRST FRENCH WATCH IN SPACE

In 1982 a French Spaceman, Jean-Loup Chrétien , flew from the Baikonour base for a 10-day trip into space. On his wrist, he wears the very first French watch in outer space, the Yema Spationaute 1 . In 1985 the Discovery shuttle takes off with on board Patrick Baudry and his Yema Spationaute II for the first Franco-American orbital flight mission.

1986 - NORTH POLE MISSION

In 1986, Yema joined Jean-Louis Etienne , a French adventurer during his 800 km solo trip across the North Pole, first human in history to achieve this. .A special tool-watch was created especially for the occasion. Resistant to extreme cold temperatures thanks to its titanium case, this model had a system to avoid the magnetic north and a sun's time for navigation.

2009 - ADVANCED IN-HOUSE CALIBER

After an investment of more than € 3 million and 4 years of Research & Development in 2011, Yema releases its in-house self-winding mechanical movement, the MBP1000 , which is entirely designed, developed and assembled in France at our Morteau workshops.

2017 - PROXIMA SPACE MISSION

French's 10th astronaut mission into space was called Proxima , in tribute to the nearest star of our Sun. In 2017, Yema and CNES work together again in creating a brand new model in honour of this new mission, the Yema Spacegraf .

The New Yema Urban Sport Trilogy Brings Back Three of the Brand’s Icons

The flygraf, rallygraf and yachtingraf names are back with accessible prices and 1980s-inspired cases..

yema yachtingraf history

While the Superman, a skindiver piece , is by far the most emblematic model of French watchmaking brand Yema , three other names might ring a bell to some enthusiasts. All designed as professional instruments in the late 1960s or early 1970s, the Flygraf (pilot’s watch), Rallygraf (driver’s watch) and Yachtingraf (regatta watch) are now deeply rooted in Yema’s collection and were recently re-edited. But today, while sticking to the same names, Yema offers something different: a trilogy of accessible sports watches all built around the same technical base, yet with significant differences regarding the display to pay tribute to the vintage Flygraf, Rallygraf and Yachtingraf. Let’s have a look at the new Yema Urban Sport Trilogy.

Let’s first go back in time… Yema was founded in 1948 by Henry Louis Belmont, a trained watchmaker who graduated from the Ecole Nationale d’Horlogerie de Besançon (National School of Watchmaking of Besançon) in the French Jura, near the Swiss border. A pioneer in the industrialisation of watchmaking in France, the brand grew to become, in the mid-1960s, the largest exporter of timepieces in the country. Success came mainly from one watch, the Superman, a skindiver launched in 1963 . Later, other important models were created, most of them answering specific professional needs – alongside, of course, classic collections for daily wear.

Yema Urban Sport trilogy Flygraf - 1

Among dozens of sports watches, three names have gained particular fame. All designed with a dedicated mission, the original versions of these watches are now part of the most collectable items of the brand. Named Flygraf, Rallygraf and Yachtingraf, they were dedicated to pilots, rally drivers and regatta sailors, respectively. They were mostly built around a chronograph movement with a display incorporating useful elements such as a navigation slide rule, a tachymeter scale or a regatta countdown timer. Today, these three models are back in the collection but with different duties than the originals. With the Urban Sport Trilogy, Yema wants to offer a powerful design with dedicated functions but at an accessible price. And that meant getting rid of the chronograph function to focus solely on the displays and bezels.

yema yachtingraf history

All three watches in the Yema Urban Sport Trilogy, meaning the new Flygraf, Rallygraf and Yachtingraf, are built around the same technical architecture, starting with a case that is inspired by one of the brand’s 1980s sports watches. This angular and barrel-shaped case can’t hide a certain “luxury sports watch” vibe but offers something sportier than, for instance, Yema’s Urban Traveller collection – this one was clearly intended to fight in the sporty-chic integrated bracelet market.

Yema Urban Sport trilogy Rallygraf - 2

Sharper, more angular and more robust overall, the case used for this trilogy has a cool retro vibe and great proportions. At 39mm in diameter, 11.70mm in thickness and 47mm in length, its proportions are as appealing as they are comfortable. The flat top surface is home to a raised rotating bezel, framing a flat sapphire crystal. The crown is large, and despite being a classic push-pull construction, water-resistance is rated at a comfortable 100m – due mainly to the solid steel screwed back. The case seems nicely finished with a combination of vertically brushed flat surfaces and polished bevels.

yema yachtingraf history

With identical cases, you might wonder what differentiates the Rallygraf from a Flygraf or a Yachtingraf. Well, it all comes down to the bezel inserts, inner flanges and dials. All three models have a distinct personality, harking back to the origins of their respective ancestors. The Rallygraf, originally a watch dedicated to automobile racing enthusiasts, has a bidirectional bezel with a tachymeter scale printed on a black aluminium insert. The dial continues in the same vein with a white-on-black racing theme, including checkered flags at 6 o’clock and squarish markers and hands. The red seconds hand accentuates the racing side of the model.

yema yachtingraf history

With its blue dial, the Yachtingraf doesn’t hide its nautical origins. This discreet member of the Urban Sport Trilogy comes with a matte blue stepped dial, silvered hands and applied markers. The inner flange hosts a classic seconds track, and the central seconds hand has a nice open-tip arrow design. What makes this version unique is the aluminium insert of the bidirectional bezel with its 15-minute regatta countdown scale. It works in tandem with the minute hand and allows precise countdown timings for regatta-style races.

yema yachtingraf history

The final model in Yema’s Urban Sport Trilogy is named Flygraf and is dedicated to pilots. Its brushed black dial offers great contrast with the white hands and applied makers. Alongside the bold yellow accents, the main feature of this model is its rotating bezel that, together with the inner flange, allows for a multitude of in-flight calculations – average speed, average fuel consumption of an aircraft, or even converting nautical miles to miles, and miles to kilometres.

All three models are powered by the brand’s proprietary Yema2000 calibre, an alternative to ETA and Sellita movements, which was conceived in France and is assembled in the French Jura (in Morteau). Running at a 4Hz frequency, it boasts 42h of power reserve and is regulated in 4 positions to a precision of -/+ 10 seconds/day. The version used here is the no-date one.

yema yachtingraf history

The Flygraf, Rallygraf and Yachtingraf are presented on a 9-link stainless steel bracelet with a double security folding clasp and a design inspired by the 1980s or a leather strap with a steel pin buckle (black leather for the Flygraf, blue leather for the Yachtingraf and perforated brown leather for the Rallygraf). Either way, the 20mm lug width will offer a lot of possibilities.

All watches of this Trilogy are now available for order at EUR 829 on a leather strap and EUR 890 on a steel bracelet. There is also a 10-piece limited collector’s case containing all three models ( EUR 2,669 ). For more details and orders, please visit yema.com .

Loving the watches, but good luck doing yachting, rally driving and flying in an urban area… Especially the Yachtingraf looks fantastic.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the Yema brand however I’ve always been under the impression that reviews of the company/quality have been a bit hit and miss?
