Privilège 435/445: Luxury ocean cruising

Marc Lombard took great care to design rather slim hulls. A good point for performance, even though most 435s don’t have daggerboards.

Classic, but above all comfortable and well-finished accommodation.

The ‘curvy’ cockpit has a steering position against the coachroof, to port, and a table to starboard.

The ‘central spur’ or false central hull, offers a large volume for the most comfortable cabin aboard.

A strong, seaworthy and remarkably well-finished catamaran: this sums up the Privilège 435, which, with longer sugar scoops, was also known under the name 445.

The Privilege 435, launched in 1999 replaced the 42. The Privilège touch? The famous central ‘spur’, a kind of third hull which doesn’t touch the water. It is clearly visible from the deck, significantly reducing the area of the trampolines. A clever device which allows one or two cabins to be fitted, with much more convincing comfort than on the classic cats. And this remains Privilege’s ‘signature’: the latest models – the Serie 5, 6 and 7 – still offer an incredible owner’s cabin in their central ‘spur’. At the dawning of the 2000s, the Les Sables d’Olonne-based builder was still working closely with the charter companies, but was taking great pains to provide comfort and a level of finishing noticeably superior to that being offered by its competitors. The owner’s version of this Privilège is therefore worth a visit!

The 445, direct descendant of the 435, got longer sugar scoops as standard – they were already available, but only as an option, on the Easy Cruise model. Although this Privilège has become the smallest in the range, it is nevertheless big enough for a nice trip in the Tropics, or a round the world voyage via the trade winds.

Privilege 435

privilege 445 catamaran review

I'm not a multihull guy. I recognize all the technological advantages of digital CD sound, but I prefer to listen to my records played through a Lyra Clavis de Capo moving-coil cartridge. My ears just like that analog sound. I also recognize the advantages of cats, but there's a little voice inside me that keeps saying, "Bob, you are a monohull guy."

Still I try not to let that cloud my appreciation of well-designed cats. Given the bulk of this big cat, the styling of the deck contours and shapely deckhouse give this boat a very sexy look. Without that dimension of depth the profile looks a little blocky, but this disappears in the photos.

The D/L of this cat is 112 using what the brochure calls "displacement light." If you use what the brochure calls "displacement maxi" the D/L is 167. The latter isn't even light in the world of monohulls anymore. The L/B is 1.88, making it the proportionately beamiest of this month's cats. Draft is provided by stubby fixed keels drawing 4 feet, 4 inches in one version, or by daggerboards that extend draft down to 8 feet, 2 inches.

The rig is tall and fractional. A drifter genoa and an asymmetrical chute can be flown from the fixed bowsprit. One of the real beauties of these big cats is the broad foredeck. This makes handling headsails much easier. And the fact that the cat won't heel more than a few degrees also helps. It's nice to be able to wrestle the chute down in a squall without having to worry about sliding out under the lower lifeline. I don't have I,J,E or P, so calculating an SA/D would not be relevant.

This boat has a great saloon. There are big windows all around for 360-degree visibility. Someone out there must like round dinettes because here's another one of them. The circular dinette sure looks good in this layout. The galley is also in the deckhouse, but down one step. There are mirror-image accommodations in the hulls with double berths forward and aft, and two heads. Eight people and two heads might create a bit of a log jam at rush hour. I have another layout drawing that shows one queen-size double forward on centerline and an additional head.

I like this cockpit. You can have the wheel forward in typical cat style or you can have twin wheels aft more like a monohull. You either look over the house with the single wheel model or you look down the side decks with the twin-wheel model. I'd like the twin wheel model, although this puts you out from under the protection of the big bimini. Either way it's a super cockpit with plenty of space for a crowd to gather and party.

There are tanks for 106 gallons of fuel and 198 gallons of water. The auxiliary power is a pair of 40-horsepower Yanmars.

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Andrew Hodgdon was our broker when we bought our 2018 Lagoon 450F in Antigua in April 2922. He provided great service and was very attentive to our needs. We would highly recommend Andrew and the Multihull Company.

Privilege Series 5

privilege-series5-4

Description

The Privilege Series 5, which has been rebranded the 510, is a luxury long distance cruiser that has made a name for itself thanks to its quality build and finish. These boats are a real step up from other cruising catamarans which is why we have included them in our Luxury Catamarans sections. There is an associated jump in price of course.

This boat has been well thought out with wide, easy-to-navigate side decks and plenty of hand holds. and you can tell very quickly that she was designed for long passages. The helm, engine controls, instruments and electric sheet winches are all around the raised helm station that should make her easy to sail with a short-handed crew. Visibility is good all around from the elevated helm position on the port side.

The hulls, deck, cabin top and bimini are foam-cored and resin-infused, and to reduce weight, furniture and bulkheads are made with foam-cored maple laminates. The quality of the joinery finish is a real step up from less expensive boats, as you would expect.

The Privilège Series 5 has rounded hulls, with chines above the waterline for decent living space down below and buoyancy at sea. She feels like a very solid boat under power or motor and is very quiet below. On a reach, you should comfortable hit 9 or 10 knots in a decent breeze.

There’s a full main and genoa, and an inner stay-sail, also with a furler, plus options on light wind and down wind sails off the bowsprit. The new angular lines of the updated Marc Lombard design look like they will cut through a sea- she’s an impressive looking catamaran.

Cruising speed under power is around 8 knots

It’s probably the interiors that Privilege are so well known for and it was Franck Darnet who had his hand in designing this one. These are semi-custom boats so owners have a great deal of input into the configuration of individual boats. The signature feature is the huge master stateroom in the nacelle forward- it’s probably the biggest owners cabin in its class and many lead onto a big ensuite bathroom in the starboard hull (I can’t quite call it a head).

Privilege was started in the 80s by Philippe Jeantot, and launched as a safe family cruising and offshore catamaran. The Privilège Serie 5 ticks all of these boxes. If you are looking for a solid, safe long distance cruiser with the space and ability to soak up all of the toys, then the Privilege Series 5 is your boat.
