Spain yacht charter

When it comes to spectacular art, architecture, fantastic cuisine, calm cruising grounds, sunny weather, and one of the world's best nightlife scenes, nothing beats a holiday in Spain. With the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Seas on its coastline, it is a yacht charter paradise. In the summer, from April to October, you will witness some of the world's best luxury yachts floating off the waters of Ibiza, Mallorca, Barcelona, and on the sailing haven of the Canary Islands.

How much to charter a yacht in Spain?

With thousands of coastlines and more than 300 sunny days every year, a yacht charter is the ideal way to truly capture Spain's gist and beauty. You can choose from many different types of sizes of boats, from speedboats to catamarans with two cabins, to superyachts with complete luxury amenities. A 156-foot sailboat in Spain can cost around $6,700 for a week's rent, while a 42-foot catamaran with six cabins can cost about $8,500. For a 134-foot luxury yacht, with five cabins, and complete water sports equipment, it can cost around $100,000 for 7 days.

What are the most popular yacht holidays in Spain?

The coastal cities and islands on the Mediterranean side of Spain offer the most popular yacht charter holidays. With turquoise waters, peaceful cruising grounds, sheltered bays, and plenty of charming and exciting islands to explore, Spain is a luxury yacht charter paradise. The Balearic Islands make up Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca, and Formentera. Mallorca is famous for its vibrant nightlife, stunning historical architecture, and secluded coves. The island also features quaint fishing villages and charming stone-built villages such as the popular Pollenca.

Ibiza, famous for being a party island destination, is known worldwide for its legendary nightlife. It is home to the world's largest nightclub, the Privilege Ibiza. But aside from its image as Spain's party capital, the island also boasts deserted beaches, calm anchorages, and crystal blue waters perfect for water sports activities. Formentera and Menorca's islands offer a more peaceful atmosphere, fantastic beach clubs, excellent restaurants, and gorgeous sandy beaches. If you want to step away from the buzzing nightlife and crowds of Ibiza, you can take your boat to these islands for some laid back vibe.

The Mediterranean coastal cities of Spain are perfect destinations for cosmopolitan life. You will discover spectacular architecture in Barcelona, particularly of Gaudi's works, who designed the famous Sagrada Familia Catholic Church. The city is the top spot for trendy shops, gourmet restaurants, and art museums. The city of Valencia, also on the coast, is renowned for its famous sailing grounds. Considered to have one of the best waters for yachts in the whole of Europe, it is host to the America's Cup, the world's most important sailing race.

In Costa Del Sol, you will find Sotogrande, also offering excellent sailing conditions, designer shops, and of course, an epic nightlife. And if you want a more rugged and raw natural beauty for a yacht holiday destination, the Canary Islands on the Atlantic Ocean is a hidden gem. It is located approximately 70 miles off the coast of Morocco and features seven main islands, all within a day's cruise. The island group is Spanish territory, and there are excellent marinas, thousands of beaches, and incredible natural scenery.

Where to go on a luxury yacht charter in Spain?

Spain is a luxury yacht charter destination, and you can find plenty of luxury tours on the Mediterranean coast. You can find Port Vell in Barcelona, one of Europe's most famous luxury marinas. You can find the Port Vell Wellness within the marina, which features a spa, a gym with personal trainers, and a Pilates studio. After seven days cruising the Mediterranean, get to drop anchor in this marina and pamper yourself with the 5-star spa only a few steps away from your boat. And with the city only a stroll away, get to explore the Gothic quarter nearby, and indulge yourself in world-class cuisine from any of the ten Michelin-starred restaurants located all over Barcelona.

Known as among the most expensive marinas in the world is the Ibiza Magna. With a prime location, this exclusive marina can host boats up to 60 meters in length. Found on the foot of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dalt Vila, right in the center of the city, its luxury amenities and proximity to the best happenings and best spots on the island make it a true luxury destination. And of course, Costa Del Sol's Puerto Banus is not to be missed. Dubbed as the most expensive marina in Europe, it is one of the world's best known nautical destinations. Located on the suburb of Marbella in Nueva Andalucia, luxury yacht charters will find excellent facilities, shops, and plenty of exciting adventures waiting for you to discover onshore.

Spain is a vibrant, exciting, and spectacular yacht charter destination. With the Mediterranean Sea offering crystal blue waters and excellent sailing conditions for most of the year, a luxury yacht charter hopping from one island and coastal city to another is the best way to immerse yourself in the cosmopolitan and natural beauty of Spain.

Spain luxury yacht charter

Spain’s vibrant cities and diverse cruising grounds are rich with culture and well-equipped for welcoming superyachts, with over 300 hundred marinas spread along the country's 8,000 kilometres of stunning coastline. A luxury superyacht charter in Spain offers guests the chance to enjoy the mainland’s yachting hubs like Marbella in Andalusia, with its famous megayacht-lined Puerto Banús, as well as electric cities like Barcelona and the former America's Cup venue of Valencia. From the mainland on the Iberian Peninsula, charter guests can cruise over to the sun-kissed Balearics to sample some of Europe’s finest island and Cala-hopping and world-renowned nightlife.

Spain yacht season and weather

The southern and eastern coasts of Spain have year-round balmy temperatures, with the Costa del Sol and the Balearic islands enjoying sunny days and temperatures in the low 20s even in November.

The Spanish charter season runs from May to October, when blue skies and warm weather prevails. Peak holiday months are July and August when average temperatures are between 25°C and 29°C, although temperatures regularly head into the 30s during the summer. During these peak months, resorts are bustling, nightlife is at its best but anchorages can be busy. Travel early or late in the season to miss the crowds and still enjoy plenty of sunshine.

Spain yacht charter itineraries

From Marbella on the Costa del Sol to Barcelona and the Costa Brava, Spain’s mainland coastline has a host of attractive options and facilities for visiting yachts.

On Spain’s southern coast, Puerto Banús marina has over 900 berths to accommodate yachts up to 50 metres (with the potential to accommodate larger craft if booking ahead) and has the pick of the glam nightlife right off the passerelle. Charterers on Spain’s sun-drenched south coast will find championship golf courses, chic beach clubs, traditional fishing towns and sweeping golden sandy beaches.

With the Costa Brava coastline littered with sandy bays and quaint, charming towns, and the enigmatic cities of Barcelona (teeming with Michelin-starred restaurants and incredible architecture) and Valencia (known for its museums and regatta racing history) lying in wait, plus artsy Sitges and historic sites such as the UNESCO listed Tarragona, it’s easy to spend a week or more exploring the colourful delights of Spain’s east coast.

Barcelona’s OneOcean Port Vell has berths up to 190 metres. Sailing yachts with masts higher than 55 metres must inform the marina as entry under the cable car line across the port will need to be arranged. Valencia Yacht Base offers berths for yachts up to 120 metres.

The Balearic Islands lie around 86 nautical miles west from Valencia and 100 nautical miles south of Barcelona and remain Spain’s most popular cruising destination, with Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza boasting a mix of irresistible calas, nature reserves and scintillating nightlife, with sleepy Formentera offering more spectacular coves.

Getting to spain.

For the Costa del Sol, Malaga airport serves commercial and private jets. On the Costa Brava, Girona airport handles commercial and private jet traffic. Multiple airports in Barcelona and Valencia also serve commercial and private jets.

As foreign-flagged boats may not start or end charters in Spain, typical routes into the country for charters include crossing from the French-Spanish border.

Legal requirements

All boats from outside the EU must report to customs officials on entry into Spain.

Unlike in some EU countries, where VAT tax can be reduced depending on time spent cruising outside of the country, Spain has a flat rate of 21% for VAT. Commerical charter yachts can however receive a break from Spanish matriculation tax.

Generally, but not in every case, local maritime safety regulations dictate that a maximum number of 12 guests are allowed on board a charter yacht.

Spain Yachting: When to Go

The Spanish coast and Balearic Islands enjoy a classic Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild, sometimes rainy winters. And while it is accessible all year long, summer is prime yachting season in Spain, most notably in July and August. These peak months offer hot, sunny days and mild water temperatures that are perfect for outdoor adventures.

In the shoulder season months of May-June and September, the weather and conditions are excellent for yachting, as well. Temperatures hover in the mid-70s, with steady breezes and moderate swells. The shoulder season also offers a reprieve from the crowds of July and August.

Spain Yacht Charters – Where to Go

Spain yacht charters

The majority of Spain yacht charters cruise the Balearic Islands. Regarded for their golden beaches, glimmering bays, and lively harbors, the Balearics – Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera, and Menorca – are one of Europe’s best destinations for a private yacht charter.

The largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca is a stunningly beautiful island, known for its lush, mountainous interior and picturesque seaside villages. Tucked away in the interior, you’ll find countless olive groves, vineyards, and almond groves – a perfect afternoon escape – while the harbors are filled with incredible restaurants, historic Gothic buildings, and excellent shopping.

The most famous of the Balearic Islands, Ibiza is renowned for its vibrant nightlife – the best in all of Europe. Along the streets of Ibiza Town, you’ll find boutique shops, gourmet restaurants, and spas, with Vegas-style clubs around every corner. Spend an afternoon on one of Ibiza’s exclusive beaches, before a night on the town.

Menorca offers a respite from the bustle of the other islands. The entire island is a protected UNESCO nature preserve, offering plenty of opportunities to explore the outdoors. Yet, there’s still plenty of history and culture to explore in the island’s charming ports.

Formentera is the smallest of the Balearics, and it’s also one of the most beautiful. Located just a half-hour cruise from Ibiza, Formentera is the perfect getaway for some R&R. Enjoy the island’s splendid beaches, bask in the sun, and enjoy an al fresco lunch in one of Formentera’s quaint plazas.

VAT (Value Added Tax) in Spain

The following VAT laws pertain to private yacht charters in Spanish waters:

  • If a yacht only cruises through Spanish/EU waters, a standard 21% VAT rate will be applied.
  • All yachts must register with the Spanish Government in each region it intends to charter.

Things to See & Do in Spain

Whether you want to savor a glass of sangria while taking in the sunset, or you’d prefer an adventurous hike in the mountains, Spain offers boat rental itineraries full of memorable experiences. A few highlights include:

Explore Historical Sites   All throughout the Balearic Islands you’ll find numerous UNESCO sites and historical landmarks. From the centuries-old battery Dalt Vila in Ibiza, which offers stunning, 360-degree views, to the Roman ruins on Mallorca, the islands offer plenty of chances to explore the region’s storied past.

Enjoy World-Class Cuisine From southern Spain to Valencia, Barcelona, and the Balearic Islands, every corner of the country has developed a thriving culinary scene. Its most popular dishes – like paella, gazpacho, and chorizo – are coupled with seductive aromatics, like fresh olive oils and garlic. The result: Vibrant dishes that awaken the palette. Plus, the Balearic Islands are well-known for their seafood. Try the lobster stew, a local favorite, that’s served on every island.

Sample Fine Wine As you taste your way through the country, pair your meals with fine Spanish wines and sangrias. Sangria – the red wine, fruit concoction – originates in southern Spain, and you’ll find numerous variations on this classic cocktail while on charter. Inland, you’ll find centuries-old vineyards producing unique, native-grape blends and vintages. Can Rich de Buscatello in Ibiza is a must-visit, known for its amazing wines and stunning scenery?

Escape into Nature  From the sparkling, aquamarine waters, to the lush peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana range, the islands put on a dazzling display of natural beauty. Menorca, also known as the “Green Island,” is a protected UNESCO reserve, and boasts some of the region’s best-kept landscapes. Yet, you’ll find secluded coves, sparkling coastal bays, and dramatic mountain ranges wherever you go.

Clubbing in Ibiza Ibiza offers the best nightlife in Spain if not all of Europe. Around Playa d’en Bossa near Ibiza Town, you’ll find world-famous clubs like Ushuaia, which draw the biggest names in international DJing. San Antonio – on the island’s western coast – is another must-visit nightlife spot, where you’ll find the so-called “sunset strip,” a collection of open-air clubs and bars that stay open all night.

Explore Historic Villages The Balearic Islands are home to some of Spain’s most historic villages and seaside towns. Alcudia in the north of Mallorca is one you can’t miss. The restored walled city boasts a gorgeous Medieval city center. Spend an afternoon exploring the city’s narrow, winding streets, and be sure to visit the town’s bustling weekly market.

While on a Yacht Charter in Spain…

  • Spend an afternoon exploring the historic Ibiza Town, before a night of clubbing near Platja d’en Bossa beach
  • Climb to the top of El Toro on Menorca and enjoy 360-degree views of the island
  • Enjoy a glass of sangria at a seaside bar in Mallorca
  • Spend a day at the Palma Aquarium, which is home to more than 8,000 marine animals
  • Relax and unwind on one of the Balearics sparkling beaches like Es Trenc
  • Explore the Dalt Vila UNESCO site on Ibiza, which overlooks the old town
  • Tour the cliff-top Far de la Mola Lighthouse on Formentera and catch a scenic sunset

Spain Yacht Charter

Luxury superyacht charters in Spain can be organised at surprisingly reasonable prices. Spain yacht charters on private boats are easily the best way to explore the beautiful Mediterranean coastlines of Spain because your crew know all the best spots. Spain has grown as a crewed yacht charter vacation location in recent years and is now one of the most popular areas in the Mediterranean. Here's why:

Everything about Spain represents the passion and power of an awesome culture. The swirling Flamenco skirts, the flash of the Matador's cloak, the sangria, the tapas, and the rich and flaming personalities of the Spanish. Everything about Spain is red; except the startling blue backdrop of the Mediterranean , where the yachts moor with their shiny hulls, and the silvery green leaves of the olive groves. Balearic Islands , located in the western Mediterranean Sea , are the most sought-after charter destination in Spain with charter itineraries starting and ending in either Mallorca or Ibiza .

On a charter holiday in the Balearics you will come across continuous sunshine, pristine clear waters, beautiful beaches and rugged landscape with plenty of historical sites to visit; including castles, museums and ancient cobbled streets in quaint little towns. You will also see a range of beautiful luxury superyachts moored off shore in the warm Mediterranean waters. The four largest islands to explore are Mallorca (or Majorca), Minorca (Menorca), Ibiza and Formentera (Espalmador).

There are no half-measures on a Spain yacht charter and visitors on a luxury yacht vacation will be bombarded with visual delights, flavoursome cuisine and animated celebrations. Ramble through the evocative old lane of the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona and marvel at Casa Battlo, the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia and Park Guell, all showcasing Gaudi's playful and flowing style that strongly influenced the Art Noveau movement. Picasso grew up in this atmospheric city and the galleries here have the best collection of his earlier work.

The Balearic Islands have some of the very best beaches, some of which can only be accessed by luxury yacht. Party the night away in Ibiza then sail to a secluded anchorage where you can sunbathe in privacy and recover in your sundeck Jacuzzi surrounded by the ambient sounds of nature. The charming seaside towns on Menorca and Mallorca provide a laid-back setting for rest and exploration, while the surrounding seas are clear and offer a wealth of opportunities to break out your water toys.

In Palma de Mallorca you could also visit the elegant Cathedral of Palma (Sa Seu), commissioned by King Jaume I and built on the site of a preexisting Arab mosque.

Have everything you could want on a Spanish luxury yacht charter and visit Mallorca in the Balearic Islands for the lush contrasts between the sandy beaches and verdant mountains, the medieval architecture and the nightlife. Adults and children alike will enjoy an afternoon exploring the myriad of caves along the coastline and the shallow clear water is the perfect place for younger children to play on inflatable and towable toys or learn new skills. Menorca features more beaches than Ibiza, Mallorca and Formentera combined and there are various attractions, including fabulous archeological sites and cultural attractions throughout the island. For yacht charterers Menorca is a perfect place to enjoy great diving, thanks to the crystal clear waters and fantastic diving sites. Minorca is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and has marked trails and routes in southern Europe ‘s most important wetland areas. The S’Albufera d’Es Grau Nature Reserve is where many aquatic and migratory birds thrive, or visit one of the monumental sites such as the historic old town of Ciudadela.

Referred to as the ‘White Island’ thanks to its typical architecture, Ibiza is one of the best known islands in the world. If what your desire is a lively nightlife and great entertainment on your luxury yacht charter, than Ibiza is the right place to sail to. The entertainment isn’t just reserved to the night clubs; after the sunset, Ibiza plays host to street markets, terrace bars, open-air cultural events and concerts.

In addition to lively atmosphere, the island is also a UNESCO World Heritage destination for its cultural wealth, boasting wonderful archaeological history and museums. By day you could choose to explore the ancient heritage of the island or simply relax and enjoy one of the many tiny coves, broad white sand beaches and water activities.  There are also two beautiful National Parks to visit in Ibiza: the Ses Salinas National Park and the Es Vedrà – an uninhabited nature reserve island. FORMENTERA OR ESPALMADOR

Your Spanish charter itinerary would not be perfect without a visit to Fromentera; a mecca for nature-lovers with rich vegetation of pines and palms. Formentera is a lovely little island situated 11 miles from the South Eastern coast of Ibiza and can only be reached by boat. Adding to the exclusive atmosphere, there are numerous great beaches and tranquil bays to relax and unwind.

Water sports enthusiasts can play to their heart's content at the kilometre-long beaches of Formentera, which has preserved its natural beauty. Artists and photographers have plentiful subjects to choose from, including weathered lighthouses, windmills, watch towers and churches. Isla Espalmador is one of the region's most famous sites and your group can indulge in a therapeutic mud bath after a tiring day of kayaking, water skiing or even scuba diving in the sea.

WINNICO YACHTS in Spain

The northern Catalonian City of Barcelona , Spain’s second largest, is also the launching base for some of Spain’s superyacht charters, for those visitors who wish to add Barcelona to their charter itinerary. The city is a melting pot of gothic and medieval architecture and the culture and nightlife in Barcelona, is as good as anywhere. There are two main marinas in Barcelona, including the newly developed Marina Port Vell. From here it is just a short stroll down to the Las Ramblas, Barcelona's famous main street. It is lined with restaurants, cafe and shops. Some of the 'must-see' sights include the breathtaking 'Sagrada Familia' surrounded by the Gothic Quarter - Barri Gòtic, Park Guell or the Picasso Museum. Barcelona, a Spanish City known for its unique diversity, is a microcosm of rich culture and history and considered as a teeming social milieu in tourist circles.

Mahón is a popular Balearic Islands destination among the yachting crowd for its easy-going character and fine eateries. The settlement has a personality all of its own; Georgian houses show an influence from tourists of a bygone era and guests can taste the locally made gin, tour the ancient ruins or listen to the organ in the serene church Iglesia de Santa Maria.Anchor in one of the many bays to watch the sunset as you dine alfresco aboard your superyacht, then spend your evening hosting your own private sundeck party while the town lights flicker on the water.

The naturally beautiful region of Ciutadella on Menorca will leave your luxury yacht charter party spoiled for choice for beaches and play grounds to break out the water toys. Fishing, snorkelling and diving in this region is also excellent and there is a variety of sea corals and marine life to make colourful photographs to share back home. Wildflowers and ruins throng the hillsides and outside of the peak tourist times, you can have the beach all to yourselves to enjoy a candlelit dinner beside the water. If you crave city life Ciutadella has excellent shops and plenty of cultural hot spots to discover, such as the Talaia Cultura and the Cathedral Ciudadela.

The Spain yacht charter scene has become increasingly popular and the types of yacht charter available in the Balearics, Barcelona, Palma, Valencia and The Costa Brava are all the main types of yacht charter including motor, sailing, bareboat charter, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, luxury yachts and the ever more familiar super yacht charter.

Like most of the Mediterranean , the Spain yacht chartering season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August is the hottest and tends to have lighter winds. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes. Other good times to rent a yacht is generally on either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are still comfortable, and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive in their largest numbers. This is the time that you will see the bulk of the Mediterranean crewed luxury superyachts visiting Spain.

Trina: The Charter was excellent – the Best captain we have ever had and an excellent crew. The boat itself was very well suited to our needs, it was particularly good that all cabins were of a similar size, as you know often the 3rd and 4th cabins can be a little small the design of the boat meant they were all a good size. Spain has at an illustrious seafaring history from Colombus discovering the Americas for the Spanish Throne to its Armada's attempts to dethrone Queen Elizabeth I, Spanish seafarers have long made history through their campaigns.

On a boat trip off the country's coastlines you'll experience the varied conditions first hand and see exactly why the country has spawned such a dedicated race of seafarers and adventurers. Dealing with the unpredictable weather of the Biscay coast or handling the weather's mood swings as katabatibc winds run off the mountains onto the sea, you'll soon understand why its seafarers felt confident to leave the comfort of coastal sailing and take on the word's oceans.

That said, come summer much of the country's coast and islands' seas are mostly placid. You'll come to appreciate the jewel-blue seas and perfect boating conditions that can only put a broad grin on your face as you reach along the coast. Thanks to its position at the centre of recent world history you'll get to see, feel and taste the culture in its riot of colours and sounds in all the ports you visit. You'll soon fall in love with Spain for all it has to offer.

Hiring A Yacht In Spain

Where it comes to a Spanish yacht charter the country has one of the most developed marine leisure industries in the world. There are literally hundreds of yacht clubs and marinas along Spain's vast coast, and you will almost certainly find just the perfect yacht charter for your needs.

You will find that there are quite stringent rules around having the right qualifications and paperwork but as long as you have it to hand when you arrive, you'll soon find that yacht chartering in Spain is no more difficult than anywhere else in the world. Charter companies' insurance companies the world over generally set similar rules to those enshrined in law in Spain.

The country's sailing laws are policed by the Garda Civil. If on a bareboat charter do have all your passports, boat license, sailing qualifications, insurance and charter papers to hand as the police do do spot checks on mariners.

With these issues in mind, you'll soon forget yourself as you explore the coastline and/or islands you choose as a base for your charter. Absorb yourself in the food and culture in all the ports and anchorages you visit. Chill out on beaches inaccessible to the all-inclusive holiday crowd. Party at some of the best venues on the planet or relax as you eat tapas through a lazy afternoon. There's so much choice to be had you could do a different Spanish sailing holiday every year and never cover the same ground twice.

Getting to Spain

There are direct flights from most international airports, let's look at the three main areas:

Costa Brava, Costa Dorada and the Balearics

Girona Airport: Known locally as Girona-Barcelona, it is 300km from Barcelona so unless the flights are prohibitively expensive into Barcelona this is best used for sailing destinations in the northern Costa Brava region.

Barcelona Airport: A major international airport that can be reached from almost anywhere in the world, it has its own train station so you can get (via a connection to Santes station) almost anywhere else in Mediterranean Spain. Use it for accessing the Costa Dorada and the southern Costa Brava. Do be aware that flights into the city can be expensive even in the low season.

Driving direct to Costa Brava : Using the French autoroute network from Normandy then the auto pistas in Spain it is possible to drive to Girona or the northern Costa Brava in 14+ hours from the UK.

Ibiza Airport: This is a well developed international airport and there are direct flights there from much of the UK and most European countries.

Mahon Airport: The capital of Menorca, useful for Balearic Island charters and accessing nearby Mallorca.

Costa Blanca and Costa Calida

Valencia Airport: This is a major holiday airport and serves the Costa Blanca and the southern Costa Dorada.

Alicante Airport: Again, a major holiday airport but useful for accessing the north and south Costa Blanca and Murcia

Cartagena Airport: Fly here for your Costa Calida destinations

Costa del Sol

Malaga Airport: An important commercial hub, you can fly in from a number of countries outside of Europe as well.

Marbella Airport: Another holiday airport that is well served from much of Europe.

Algeciras Airport: Not quite as well developed as the other two but still caters for international flights and for access to the southern end of the Costa del Sol.

Best Areas To Charter

Costa brava.

Stretching from the Bay of Roses and the French border in the north to Barcelona in the south, the Costa Brava, the coast of Catalonia is distinctive for its fantastic sailing and independent culture ashore.

Catalonia has recently attempted independence from Spain. Visiting it you'll soon understand the language, culture and economy is that of a different country, and if you burrow beneath the surface you'll likely return saying you've been on holiday to 'Catalonia' - not 'Spain'.

Here you will find weather dominated by the Tramontana mountain wind that can be fierce but cools the land from the fiercest of Mediterranean heat - and leaves the air so clear you could easily see the fine detail of a mountainside castle from two miles off.

Costa Dorada

The Costa Dorada reaches from the Catalan capital of Barcelona in the north to Pensacola in the south. Again, quintessentially Catalan and not 'Spanish' you'll soon be entranced and bewitched by the separate, independent culture and ways of being of this proud nation.

While the Pyrenees and the Tramontana hit the Mediterranean coast on the northern Costa Brava, the further southwest you go along the Costa Dorada the milder the Tramontana thanks to the distance from the mountains. This can mean it gets a lot hotter than the mountainous regions but the winds are less feisty.

One thing you should absolutely do when exploring this coast is explore the food on offer. Whether Michelin-starred restaurants or small town bistros your tastebuds are in for a treat. You might find bacon and eggs somewhere (though may have to explain the idea to a chef) but it would be an act of silliness to not sit to a table and simply ask for the day's special. You never know what you'll end up trying!

Balearic Islands

Famed for the party islands of Ibiza, Mallorca (capital Palma De Mallorca )and Menorca, these Catalan islands just off mainland Spain aren't just about partying to a globetrotting DJ. Ibiza was first 'colonised' by hippies in the 1960s and 70s, and for the most part is still very much that - a hideaway and not at an all night a party venue.

For those so inclined you can fill your sailing boat bilges with beer and challenge your liver for a week. The beer is cheap and the parties are 24/7 if that's what you want. The Cafe del Mar won't leave you disappointed, and the dawns are legendary for those with such stamina.

This shouldn't be off-putting for the sailor with a family who wants to be grown up and perhaps wants to enjoy the boating, culture and scenery. There are anchorages where you won't be kept awake all night and plenty of villages near a sandy beach where you will be able to escape from the madness. There is so much more to these islands that you don't have to be young to enjoy them!

Costa Blanca

Moving south and west out of Catalonia and into Castillian Spain, we now enter The Costa Blanca

Along with a big mix of Europeans on holiday particularly around areas like Benidorm, Alicante and Torrevieja there's plenty more to see here. What about the Moorish castles built during the Grenadine Caliphate and the Misteri d'Elx? What about the world class art? You will find paella by the bucket if you want, but there's better food to be had!

In summer the sailing can be just off the scale with F3-4 breezes .

Costa Calida

Literally the 'Hot Coast', the Costa Calida is not just full of beautiful people. With the legendary seafaring city of Cartagena at its centre, the Costa Calida has so much history you could drown in it, escaping the world at home as you see, feel and taste some of the best that Spain has to offer.

With the thousand year old city at its centre and supporting towns to the east and west, this stretch of the Spanish coast has a deep and rich history that has in part been supported with Spain's interests in South America. The Romans got there long before the conquistadors left to find their fortune and today you will bring home memories of an area that is just about as 'Spanish' as you can get.

Its climate is very hot in summer so perhaps better to visit outside the peak season of July/August. That said you will be drawn to its beautiful shores and secluded coves with fantastic people time and again as so many others are.

Before the Costa de la Luz and Perhaps one of the more famous of Spanish holiday escapes for European tourists, there is a lot more to the Costa del Sol than 'Brits abroad'! Though a draw to many tourists, the Costa del Sol capital Malaga is an important international seaport in its own right with direct connections to Africa and South America.

There are tourist hotspots up and down the coast - Torremilinos, Fuengirola and Marbella are all famed package holiday centres with eccentricities loved and parodied in equal measure according to your viewpoint. Picasso was born in Malaga, and if you visit the Old Town you can absorb yourself in his and others' worlds - civilisation began in this region some 3,000 years ago.

There are over 300 days of full sun a year here, so you can expect warm weather and great sailing. You will find hidden beaches and coves that the tourist boats either can't reach or have loaded up and gone home when it's time for dinner. You can choose to be at one with the Anglo-Hispanic culture or apart from it - the choice is yours.

Girona: This is the regional capital of the Costa Brava with a great old town and a busy international airport. It is far inland but a hub from which you can reach Roses, Empuriabrava, and even Barcelona and Sitges with good public transport links.

Palamos : Palamos is the closest yachting hub to Girona, this is a small coastal resort in the Baix Emporda region of the Costa Brava. Use this for getting to the coastal artist's village Cadaques to the north or as far as Barcelona to the south.

Barcelona : This is Spain's second city and absolute capital of Catalonia. With its international airport that has a train station direct into the city (you have to change trains for security reasons mid way) it is a good launching point for the Costa Brava or the Costa Dorada. You can hire for a day or take a crewed catamaran out of the city as well as a longer yacht charter.

Near to Barcelona, Sitges is a far more laid back town but has its own marina that can be a launching point to the south, down the Costa Dorada. The town reflects the more cultured, chilled atmosphere of the region. You can take a day sail from here as well as a full bareboat or skippered hire.

Ibiza Town : This is the party capital of the island and also the main yacht charter location on the island. Party boats and day sails are available from here too.

Mahon: The historic capital of Menorca and a major holiday town in its own right.

Valencia: This is an important coastal town with a busy sailing holiday industry. You can fly in direct and get aboard your boat in relatively quick time.

Denia: To the south of Valencia and almost as close to Alicante, Denia has a busy charter marina.

Alicante: A major holiday jumping off point, it also has a major yacht charter base at its marinas thanks in part due to its central location on the Costa Blanca.

Torrovieja: To the south west of the Costa Blanca, this is easily accessed via Alicante Airport. Being a holiday resort you will also find day sails and day-boat hire available.

Cartagena: This is a major commercial port with a 2,000 year history. With flights direct into the city, you'll find quick access to the marinas in the town.

La Manga: Just to the north of Cartagena and in the lee of Cape Palos is La Manga - thanks to the spit, it has a large protected sailing area in Mar Menor.

Torrovieja: This Costa Blanca town can also be used as a starting point for your Costa Calida sailing holiday.

Malaga: This is another major commercial port with a number of marinas there. It is on the northern edge of the Costa del Sol and is a great starting point for your Costa del Sol sailing holiday.

Benalmádena: An historic old Andalucian town with great beaches and the Tivoli theme park, this has a busy marina that you can access via Malaga or Marbella.

Marbella: A major holiday resort in the middle of the Costa del Sol, it is a good base for a trip north or south depending on what you want to do on your trip.

Puerto Banus: Just to the west of Marbella is Puerto Banus, a seaside town with its shallow bay and large marina.

Sotogrande: To the west of Marbella and within reach of Algeciras/Gibraltar, Sotogrande is a large privately owned development that has a very good marina.

Types Of Yachts To Hire

Where it comes to chartering you can hire a motor cruiser, a monohull sailing yacht, Superyacht, or a catamaran. Each have their benefits.

Sailing Yacht (Sailboat)

From €100 or so a day up to whatever you can afford, monohull sailing yachts are fun to sail at all points of the wind, whether nose into a building Tramontana or blasting under all canvas downwind this is usually a yacht charter at an affordable price.

Far more luxurious than a sailboat these often have en suite toilets and showers in the staterooms as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck. They have twin engines to compensate for their lack of windward ability but are great sailing with wind abaft the beam.

Luxury Yachts and Superyachts

Want your own personal cruise ship for you and your group to leave the world behind? Take a fully crewed luxury yacht charter or super yacht charter up the costas. On a crewed yacht charter of this kind you will have far greater range than on other yachts above so a run between Barcelona and Gibraltar - or even over to Morocco is feasible. You will have every need and want catered to as you go.

Whether a motor yacht with cabins or a private boat trip for a fishing trip / blasting up the bay, these are comfortable seagoing boats with a kick of speed should you want to cover a bigger distance on the day or just for the fun of having a 10 metre wide wake and 10 tons of steel from a motor boat flying along at 30 knots!

Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded white sand beaches from another perspective.

Skippered Yacht Charter or Bareboat?

When it comes to a yacht charter in Spain you have two choices - bare boat hire or skippered yacht charter. Both have their own advantages.

Skippered charter

Fancy going on a sailing holiday yet have no sailing qualifications or lack the confidence to go it alone? A skippered yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. You will pay over €120 a day extra for the skipper, as well as their food and a tip at the end. Sometimes the skippers will also be the yacht owners which means they will show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

Bareboat Yacht Charter

For those who seek a bit of adventure off their own back without the expense of a paid skipper aboard, a bare boat yacht charter could be just the ticket. You will need sailing qualifications but for that you get to be the author of your own story afloat as you explore the coast and islands of Spain.

Do you need a licence to charter in Spain?

If you want to bareboat charter you will need an approved boating qualification.

Below is a list of relevant qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence (ICC): Standard European Qualification for bare boat sailing

ASA 104 Bareboat Sailing Certificate : The American Sailing Associations skipper minimum qualification for hiring bare boat yachts

RYA: The Royal Yachting Association's qualifications (minimum day skipper level) is necessary for bare boat charter hire, it's also worthwhile seeing do you need to have done a VHF radio course as well as some charter boat owners will require this.

There are also many other European national boating qualifications that are accepted here too, it's worthwhile checking these details before hiring.

If you want a skippered boat rental as a charter yacht then you don't need any sailing certification at all, you just turn up and off you go.

Best Times To Hire

The hottest time - and the most expensive time of year are the school holiday months of July and August. If you are limited to these months then be prepared to pay a premium on the boat you are hiring and in the marinas you visit.

The sailing season in the country runs from April to October so it may pay to go earlier or later in the year. The weather is still a lot warmer than in Northern Europe - be prepared to smile in your tee shirt as you see locals bundled up in their winter jackets - but you will find the locals warmer toward you and the marinas cheaper. As a tip, October is better than April as the Mediterranean Sea is still warm from the summer months.

The Climate

Sea Breezes: Between June to September these onshore breezes build in the morning and get to maximum strength by mid afternoon. Unlike the Aegean for example, these don't usually build to anything too exciting, meaning you can enjoy the best sailing on the Mediterranean with weather to remember.

Tramontana: This is a Northerly mountain wind that drops off the Pyrenees and affects much of the Costa Brava and even the Balearic Islands. If one is blowing - and it can pick up at almost any time of the year - it pays to be under-canvassed than to have too much sail on. This is because the katabatibc winds plummet off the mountains and suddenly increase with virtually no notice. You will see them actually splash when they land! Better be in port if a strong one is forecast.

Galerna: This is a NW wind that also affects northern Spain. It is characterised by stormy, hot air that can blow at 100km/h so again, best to be in port if a strong one hits.

Levanter: This is an E-NE wind that can get quite feisty and funnels through the Strait of Gibraltar - affecting the southern Costa del Sol.

Chubasco: This is a fairly frequent event that can hit almost anywhere in Spain and comes from any direction. Essentially the Chubasco is a thunderstorm that can be over as quickly as it appears.

How much does it cost for a Spanish Charter

There's almost a sailing trip for every budget when it comes to chartering. For €120 a day plus (€840 a week) you can take a sailboat monohull out with five other adults. That is going to be cheaper than a week in a hotel for everyone.

Catamarans cost more - expect to pay anything from €500 to €2,000 a day depending on the time in the season.

Motorboats taken on a bareboat basis can cost as little as €500 a day if they have sleeping accommodation - much less if they are day boats.

RIBs can cost as little as €50 for an afternoon.

In each of the examples above you can take on a skipper starting at €150 a day depending on what the vessel is and their required qualifications to sail it.

For Superyachts and Luxury Yachts expect to pay €8,000 a day plus.

Explore Spain By Renting A Yacht

Frequently asked questions

Yacht hire in Spain is legal. As with driving a car there do keep your documents to hand as it is a legal requirement to present your ID, licenses, insurance documents and charter contract on demand by the Marine Police.

You can hire a motorboat, RIB, catamaran or sailboat (Sailing Yacht) on bareboat terms in Spain, or you can hire a skipper to help you. For a luxury yacht or super yacht you will hire the crew and skipper as part of the package.

Consider your budget, sailing experience, whom you are taking sailing and where exactly you wish to go. Have you the sailing qualifications to do the trip? These are all things you need to consider.

This depends on what you want from your trip. If intense heat and crowds appeal to you then July or August are the best times. If a quiet time is more your bag and you don't have kids then September/October could be great as it is cheaper but still warm.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to/are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the yacht charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter you want to book and where do you want to go. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm in Spring and Autumn - but at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you are travelling from within the European Union then you will not normally require a visa. Check with the Spanish embassy in advance if you are travelling from a country outside the EU.

Screen Rant

10 below deck charter guests who will never return to the franchise.

While the charter guests who appear on Below Deck have a great time while filming the show, many aren't invited back for a number of reasons.

  • Some charter guests on Below Deck have caused unnecessary drama and won't likely return due to bad behavior.
  • Captain Glenn Shephard from Below Deck Sailing Yacht faced backlash from Barrie, who called him two-faced.
  • Former guest Dr. Francis Martinis will not return to Below Deck after he was arrested for faking prescriptions.

The Below Deck franchise has featured many charter guests since 2013, many of whom will never return . The Bravo series focuses on expensive charters with wealthy guests who have attitude problems and over-the-top demands. That includes Charter guest Alexis Bellino, who boarded Captain Lee Rosbach’s yacht with her boyfriend at the time, Andy Bohn. She was disrespectful and made everyone uncomfortable with her and Andy's PDA. She even insulted crew members after featuring on the show.

Like Alexis, Delores Flora from Below Deck season 8 was a terrible guest. Not only did she misbehave, but she also got drunk and s wam while intoxicated, which is not only not allowed, it frightened the crew members. Delores got kicked out of the yacht the next day. These guests created unnecessary drama on the boat and will likely never return like a few others from the franchise.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

8 barrie & tony, below deck sailing yacht.

Barrie and Tony Drewitt Barlow had a decent time in the Below Deck Sailing Yacht seasons 2 and 3. Despite that, they left with a bitter taste because of Captain Glenn Shephard. In 2021, Barrie participated in a podcast, Pita Party: The Podcast , where he claimed that Captain Glenn bothered him while using his phone .

Barrie said, “he (Captain Glenn) was a two-face b*stard,” adding that he just didn’t like his presence.

7 Frank Fay

Below deck mediterranean.

In Below Deck Mediterranean season 7, Charter guest Frank Fay had a thing for second stew Kyle Viljoen. He pursued him on the yacht, but unfortunately, their relationship didn’t last. Frank will likely never return to the series as long as Captain Sandy Yawn allows Kyle to work for her. Even if Kyle quits, Frank wouldn’t want to be in an environment that would remind him of his failed relationship.

6 Erica Rose

Erica Rose appeared on Below Deck Sailing Yacht two seasons in a row. Erica was highly offensive toward the crew member, as well as her husband, Charles Sanders, and to make things worse, she left the crew with a measly tip , leading fans to slam her on social media. Ultimately, Erica had to apologize for her bad attitude but never returned to give the crew the tip they deserved. Nobody on Below Deck Sailing Yacht would ever want to return.

5 Justin Guarini

Justin Guarini’s time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht was not dramatic at all; however, he’ll probably never return to the series. Justin wouldn’t return because he wasn't the primary guest. He joined his friend, Kim, who wanted to enjoy a luxury yacht trip. It was more of a one-and-done deal. Secondly, nobody recognized him at all. Viewers later realized who he was and how he was the runner-up on American Idol season 1. Justin is a theatre artist and has made a name for himself. However, it was embarrassing that so many fans had no clue who he was .

Below Deck: 8 Charter Guests With The Worst Attitudes

4 johnny damon.

Johnny Damon’s time at Below Deck Med was full of explosive moments. Once, he sent the food back, citing that the experience wasn’t “five stars.” On another occasion, his wife, Michelle, created drama by yelling at the owner of another yacht . Overall, the experience was simply terrible on both sides. Crew members didn’t love Johnny and his wife, and the couple didn’t respect the crew members. It is unlikely that Captain Sandy would want to host the couple again as long as she’s in charge.

3 Krystal Murphy

Former charter guest Krystal Murphy boarded Captain Lee’s yacht with her friends. She immediately began showing red flags, drinking, and just being a menace. Krystal fought with her friend, Chelsea, creating unnecessary drama. She even passed out and punched a friend in the face. Former Chief Stew Kate Chastain disliked serving Krystal and called her a “spoiled brat;” she wanted to throw her off the yacht. Nowadays, Krystal has seemingly become a more private person. It doesn’t seem like Krystal would want to be on TV again.

2 Steve Bradley

Below Deck fans should remember Steve Bradley as he made many appearances on the show. In Below Deck season 3, he wanted a foam party and demanded the crew to figure it out and follow his commands, acting like a king. In Below Deck season 6, Steve made more outrageous requests. Apart from being a wild guest, Steve was entitled and acted inappropriately at times . No Below Deck captain would want to host him again as he didn't come off as very likable.

1 Dr. Francis Martinis

Below deck mediterranean & below deck sailing yacht.

Dr. Francis Martinis from Below Deck Med and Below Deck Sailing Yacht has a zero chance of returning. While the former charter guest didn’t have too many issues on the show, his personal life issues will stop him from appearing on Bravo again. According to TMZ , Dr. Francis and his wife, Jessica, were arrested for filling out fake prescriptions in December 2023 . The couple used the names of Below Deck stars and got caught red-handed. The Below Deck franchise would never want to welcome felons, especially when their mugshots are all over the internet.

Below Deck airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo.

Sources: Pita Party: The Podcast , Krystal Murphy /Instagram

Below Deck is a popular reality TV franchise that focuses on a group of crew members as they work on luxurious yachts and cater to their client's needs. After the original series proved to be a success, Bravo developed a handful of spinoff shows including Below Deck Selling Yacht, Below Deck Adventure, Below Deck Down Under, and Below Deck Mediterranean.

Starting a new season of “ Below Deck ” can be similar to returning to summer camp as a kid — you know it’s going to be fun and that you’ll be in the same environment, but some of the people will be different and you’re not quite sure what the vibes will be.

This time around, in particular, feels that way because for the first time in the show’s 11-season run, Captain Lee Rosbach is no longer at the helm. It’s a pivotal moment for a franchise that has become one of the most popular entities in the sprawling universe of reality TV since premiering on Bravo in 2013 . The show’s appeal was built on endless romances between various crew members (“boatmances,” as they came to be known), horrible charter guests and some sort of passive-aggressive fight about how many shackles of the anchor chain should be in the water. And there was always Rosbach presiding over the drama as he trudged around the boat, reeling off one liners like “I’m madder than a pissed-on chicken” and “we screwed the pooch so many times we should have a litter of puppies running around.”

At the center of the show now is Kerry Titheradge (the stern yet goofy captain of “Below Deck Adventure” fame), who is managing the Motor Yacht Saint David with the cheeky chief stew Fraser Olender by his side.

With that change in captain, the energy on the boat — both onscreen and off — is different, according to Olender.

“I feel like Kerry this season, as opposed to Lee, has a no B.S. attitude, which I love with him,” Olender said in an interview. “With Kerry, he taught me a lot and sort of forced to me confront issues directly with my team, work them out, as opposed to making executive decisions too soon.”

This shift in management style changes the central conflict — whereas the drama once focused on the captain swiftly kicking out any unpleasant crew member (as we might have seen with Rosbach), the drama now focuses on the whole crew trying to get along (since Titheradge gives people those second chances).

Additionally, Olender noted that the captain’s relationship with the crew can also affect the drama on board.

“Captains absolutely do get involved, whether they know it or not,” Olender said, adding that for the crew, everything is about “trying to impress your captain.”

This phenomenon plays out early in the new season when the lead deckhand, Ben Willoughby, called out a fellow crew member over the radios about not wearing a life vest — something he easily could have done in private. The drama that followed became an interpersonal conflict between the two of them, both with the ultimate goal of impressing Titheradge. (Of course, the two deckhands had kissed on the previous crew night out, which is more in line with the “Below Deck” drama viewers are used to.)

For “Below Deck” showrunners, the changeovers in the cast allowed them to rethink what the show would look like.

From the season premiere, it was immediately apparent that Rosbach’s absence wasn’t the only change this season: The filming is sleeker, the daily, multicourse meals prepared by the chef are given their own glamour shots and the cameras sometimes cut to the perspectives of yachties running around on deck and through the galley.

“Our showrunner, Lauren Simms, is an avid consumer of all different kinds of media,” Noah Samton, a senior vice president of unscripted current production for NBCUniversal, said in an interview. “She pitches us different ideas on how to stylistically evoke different feelings and change the mood a little bit of ‘Below Deck’ without removing what really works.”

Moving through the rest of the season, and potentially through seasons to come, Olender is aiming to bring a cutthroat management style while also bringing affection for his stews, all with his signature British humor.

On Bravo’s side, there are changes in the works for the other “Below Deck” spinoffs — including “Sailing Yacht,” “Mediterranean” and “Down Under” — which collectively, have 26 seasons. Specifically, Samton said that “Down Under” is currently filming and that even though fans should be ready to see new things, the show will stay true to its original concept.

“These are real yachties doing a real job so you have to stay within those confines because the audience isn’t going to want anything that is too produced or fake,” Samton said. “So we have to find ways to reinvent while staying true to the original concept of the show.”

And as Olender said: “I’m sure that every year if I were to work with this franchise again, that I’ll be thrown a collection of total chaotic and disastrous stews — that’s what makes it watchable.”

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More
