The Resurrection of Superyacht KANALOA

Posted February 15, 2019 in Brokerage & New Build by Janine St.Denis

An in-depth survey had been carried out and it was deemed that, due to the cost, restoring the yacht to a sea-worthy state, let alone to her former glory as one of the Mediterranean’s leading charter yachts, was not feasible. Having discovered significant corrosion to structural elements of the hull, deck and internal structure, KANALOA sat neglected for two years.

After months of meticulous and detailed planning, KANALOA’s newly appointed managers at Hill Robinson Yacht Management proposed a full mechanical and structural refit, which would return her to active service as a classed commercial vessel.

In June 2014, the KANALOA project started at the Composite Works’ facility in La Ciotat, France where, under the tight scrutiny of project manager Pino di Mora and KANALOA captain Dean Homan, an experienced team of contractors and crew set about bringing KANALOA back to her former glory.

The extensive structural restoration began when Lloyds’ Register surveyors began an in-depth inspection and certification of the yacht’s structure and hull plating. This process required dismantling all machinery, fittings and insulation around the areas suspected of corrosion. Following the inspection, all metal work in need of repairs was replaced, again following the strict Lloyds’ rules, and duly documented. It is worth noting that the depth and scope of this work far surpassed normal 20-year special survey requirements, which often rely only on nondestructive testing measurements.

The refit was not limited to just structural work; both Deutz main engines were completely rebuilt and returned to zero hours. In addition, gearboxes, tanks, pipework, air conditioning, technical spaces and steering gear all were completely overhauled. Further more, both tail shafts, including the shaft bearings and seals, were removed and replaced. Following the comprehensive mechanical and structural refit, KANALOA also received full exterior paintwork to her topsides and superstructure and a full refurbishment of all the teak decking.

The full extent of KANALOA ’s transformation is made even more remarkable by the fact it was completed to the highest of standards within 14 months — just in time for her grand debut at the 2015 Monaco Yacht Show.

Northrop & Johnson was chosen to represent KANALOA from the early stages of the refit. In addition, the brokerage was tasked at keeping the market informed with her progress. Hill Robinson Director Nick Hill summarized, “We were absolutely delighted that Northrop & Johnson could present KANALOA for the Monaco Yacht Show in September, thus achieving our promised objective and exceeding the owner's expectations. KANALOA has been an extraordinary project with a combination of factors all contributing to an amazing success story. After suffering neglect during a prolonged lay-up period, the Hill Robinson project team transformed KANALOA into a fully classed, MCA-, ISM-, ISPS-, MLC-compliant vessel only 14 months. She is ready to charter and invite her owners or guests to enjoy her state-of-the-art facilities.”

Northrop & Johnson is proud to offer one of the best value classic Italian luxury motor yachts back onto the market. KANALOA is priced at €6,500,000. With the potential to be once again one of the Mediterranean’s leading charter yachts, viewings are highly recommended. For further details on KANALOA’s refit or to arrange an inspection, please contact Jonathan Browne at [email protected] or Ed Dickinson at [email protected] .

Fatal boat crash launched woman into trees and threw man into water, Florida cops say

A body pulled from trees was among two discovered after a 21-foot boat crashed near southwest Florida’s Little Hickory Bay, according to investigators.

It happened around 3 p.m. Friday, March 15, not far from North Naples, about a 160-mile drive south from Tampa, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a news release.

“The vessel, carrying two occupants, was traveling north, passing red channel marker 14, when it’s starboard side ran into the mangrove trees, ejecting both passengers,” FWC officials said.

“The unmanned vessel remained in gear until it crashed into the mangrove shoreline, coming to a stop.”

Judy Eaton, 71, of Bonita Springs “was recovered from the mangrove trees where she was pronounced deceased,” officials said.

John Moulder, 71, of Naples, was airlifted by EMS to Gulf Coast Medical Center in Ft. Myers, “where he later died from his injuries,” officials said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but alcohol may have been a factor, investigators said in the report.

Boaters who use the area regularly told WBBH the couple died at a turn known to be dangerous, but signs marking the hazard vanished during Hurricane Ian , which struck southwest Florida in September 2022.

“Sadly, I was not surprised,” boater Kevin Price told the station. “I had a conversation with another friend recently about this turn specifically, and some of the close calls I’ve seen at this spot.”

What You Should Know About Kanaloa (Hawaiian Ocean God)

hawaii-hurricanes-dont-worry

For most Hawaiian visitors, few activities can prove more enjoyable than a  Na Pali Coast boat tour . From dolphin watching to  catching a beautiful sunset over the ocean , these excursions allow visitors to see Hawaii in a way they would never experience from shore. As the team at  Kauai Sea Tours  in Eleele notes, however, these activities can be even more meaningful when you understand Hawaiian culture and mythology. For anyone going out on the ocean, this means learning about the Hawaiian god Kanaloa.

Who Is Kanaloa?

a close up of an umbrella on a sandy beach next to the ocean

Pacific sunrise at Lanikai beach, Hawaii

Kanaloa is one of the major gods in Hawaiian tradition. Though he doesn’t feature as prominently in Hawaiian mythology as other gods, he’s the god of the sea and long-distance sailing voyages. In other Polynesian cultures, he is also referred to as the god of the sea, though he has different names.

In Hawaiian legend, Kanaloa would travel with the god Kane, and together, the two of them would help establish sources of fresh water. As with other Hawaiian gods, Kanaloa could take on many physical forms, or kinolau. For example, dolphins, whales, bananas, and even the ocean are all viewed as Kanaloa’s kinolau.

Why Does Kanaloa Matter?

In Hawaiian tradition, the kinolau of any god must be treated with respect. Historically, women were even forbidden to eat certain types of food because they were kinolau of Kanaloa. This basic principle of respect is equally important when going on sea tours in Hawaii today. Respect for the culture of the past and the sea itself ensures these treasures will still be just as breathtaking and powerful for future generations.

By understanding the religion of the ancient Hawaiians, your trip along the Na Pali coast will be that much more insightful and meaningful. With sunset tours and dolphin sightseeing, you’ll be sure to have an amazing experience when you head onto the water with Kauai Sea Tours. To learn more about their sea tours and other adventures, call us at  (808) 335-5309  today to speak with a friendly representative.

DLNR: Grounded yacht scuttled at sea after being ‘successfully’ freed at Honolua Bay

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The grounded luxury yacht ‘Nakoa’ was freed Sunday afternoon after three unsuccessful attempts in two weeks — but now, it’s at the bottom of the ocean.

At around 1 p.m. Sunday, the salvage ship “Kahi” was able to free the 120-ton yacht Nakoa.

Videos revealed a crunching of the yacht’s hull as the tugboat pulled it 90 degrees off the rocky shoreline.

Ideal weather conditions and a 3,300 horsepower tug made the third salvage attempt successful.

Crews were hoping to bring the yacht to Honolulu, but officials said they had to let the ship sink Sunday afternoon in about 800 feet of water.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hawaii News Now (@hawaiinewsnow)

DLNR’s Chair, Dawn Chang credited the salvage company for their patience and seeing the job through.

As the vessels were leaving, humpback whales were seen escorting the trio out.

“I will tell you, we were all pulling, we were all literally praying,” said Chang. “I think things were in alignment. I think the whales that escorted that vessel out there, also wanted it out.”

City leaders watched as the Nakoa was pulled away.

“All of us up there watching filled up with a big sense of relief,” said Maui County Councilmember Tamara Paltin.

“I’m very grateful to the State of Hawaii for their efforts in finding a salvage company, who was able to do the do their task,” said Mayor Richard Bissen. “The important thing was to get it removed, but the cost I think, has been borne by the taxpayer and that really should be the person responsible.”

The Save Honolua Coalition has been keeping a close eye on the 94-foot yacht since it ran aground near the Honolua-Mokuleia marine sanctuary.

“There is a scar on the shoreline rocks and part of the reef,” said John Carty of the Save Honolua Coalition.

“Let that scar be a reminder to us, that we need to make sure that we all do what we have to do, to make sure this never happens again.”

The state said “aggressively pursue recouping all salvage costs from the owner, in addition to the cost to repair damage to coral reefs and live rock.”

The environmental impact of the sinking is still unclear at this time.

Nearly two weeks ago, crews removed all the fuel and other hazardous materials on board .

DLNR said they’ll return to the location this week to conduct a post-incident damage assessment and work with the Attorney General’s Officer to hold the owner of the yacht accountable.

“Both for the damages to the reef, the environment, all the costs associated with the removal of the vessel, as well as all the administrative costs,” said Chang.

Hawaii News Now reached out to the yacht’s owner for comment and are waiting to hear back.

We’re also waiting to hear from the DLNR on what will happen to the sunken yacht.

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Three sailors from Russia and France were rescued on Wednesday after the inflatable catamaran they were trying to navigate from Vanuatu to Australia came under attack from sharks, authorities said.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority said it responded to an alert from an emergency beacon at about 1:30 a.m. When rescuers arrived at the scene more than 800 kilometers (500 miles) east of the Australian coast in the Coral Sea, they found both hulls of the men’s 9-meter (30-foot) boat had been damaged after several shark attacks.

The agency enlisted the help of a Panamanian-flagged ship, the vehicle-carrying “Dugong Ace,” which was able to complete the rescue and take the two Russians and one Frenchman aboard. A rescue plane also flew to the scene.

“The three males were very happy to be rescued, and they’re all healthy and well,” said Joe Zeller, duty manager at the agency’s Canberra response center.

The men, aged between 28 and 64, are due to arrive in the Australian city of Brisbane on Thursday.

Zeller said a journey from the Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu to Australia on such a vessel would usually take two to three weeks.

BritainÅfs Secretary of State for Defence Grant Shapps, center right, and BritainÅfs Foreign Secretary David Cameron, left, walk with the Premier of South Australia Peter Malinauskas, right, Deputy Prime Minister of Australia Richard Marles, second right, Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong, second left, and United StatesÅf Ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy, during a visit to the Osborne Naval Shipyard in Adelaide, Australia, Friday, March 22, 2024. Australia is set to provide 4.6 billion Australian dollars ($3 billion) to British industry to support the construction of nuclear-powered submarines and ensure its new fleet arrives on time. (Matt Turner/AAP Image via AP)

Aerial photos showed major damage to the catamaran, with the front section of one hull completely missing.

Zeller said the GPS-encoded emergency beacon had saved the men’s lives by allowing rescuers to quickly pinpoint their location and mount an appropriate rescue. He said there were many reasons why a shark may attack a boat.

“However, the motivations of these sharks is unclear,” Zeller said.

Testimonials.

WE LOVED IT! The whole team was so honored and thankful. Thanks so much for all of your team's hard work and excellence in organizing our party. Of the 22 of us, only 4 had ever been sailing and not in the Bay. The guys had an incredible experience, the skippers were all really great, allowing each of us to be at the wheel. They were kind and empowering. Plus the weather and wind were perfect! It was definitely one of the top 3 experiences that we have shared as leaders in the past 5 + years. We couldn't have asked for a better day!

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.

I love sailing in the San Francisco Bay and greatly appreciate everything that MSC has to offer, the classes, clinics, club sails, racing and charters. I enjoy our supportive sailing community and use every opportunity to spend time on the water. After obtaining the certifications from MSC I did my first charter in Croatia in 2022 with my family. It was amazing and we’re looking forward to returning soon!

State Land Board Chair To Grounded Maui Yacht Owner: ‘This Is Not Over’

The vessel's investors were fined $117,000 but the board wants more time to decide what consequences the owner should face.

The vessel’s investors were fined $117,000 but the board wants more time to decide what consequences the owner should face.

The investors behind a luxury yacht that ran aground in Honolua Bay reached a tentative settlement agreement with state officials on Friday over environmental damages to one of Maui’s most pristine marine sanctuaries.

Maui

Kevin and Kimberly Albert of New Mexico agreed to pay nearly $117,500 in fines for the incident. The couple financed the vessel that crashed into the rocky shoreline and spilled diesel fuel in the ocean in February.

There are likely to be more damages to pay. Jim Jones, the Honolulu-based owner of the 120-ton, 94-foot Nakoa yacht, and his company Noelani Yacht Charters , are also at fault.

The maximum penalty Jones and his company could pay is $1.76 million. But the Board of Land and Natural Resources deferred its decision about whether and how much to fine Jones and his yacht charter, saying it wants more time to consider public input on the less tangible cultural impacts of the crash.

A luxury yacht ran aground on Maui on Feb. 20. (Courtesy: DLNR/2023)

“This is not over,” BLNR Chairwoman Dawn Chang said, adding that in her opinion Jones should not be allowed to operate any commercial business in Hawaii waters.

The BLNR unanimously approved the Alberts’ settlement proposal with the added stipulation that the couple refrain from bringing state employees and contractors into any legal claims, including the investors’ $2 million lawsuit against Noelani Yacht Charters, Jones and the captain on the day of the wreck. The concern is that salvage companies and other contractors might pass on working for the state in the future if doing so could open them up to litigation.

The Alberts’ attorney Randall Schmitt said during the regularly scheduled public meeting that he would consult with his clients about the extra condition. The board authorized Chang to finalize negotiations.

“DLNR normally does not go aggressively after vessel owners who ground their vessels and cause damage but in this matter, because of the public outcry and because of our own concerns — the vessel was so close to the marine life conservation district — we felt compelled to take this necessary action,” Chang said. “For some it may not be enough.”

It would be unprecedented for the BLNR to seek the maximum penalty from Jones and his yacht charter.

Penalties for vessel groundings are usually calculated by the state based on considerations including the number, size and species rarity of damaged coral colonies. In this case, the amount of damaged marine resources is relatively low.

The yacht damaged 119 coral colonies, whereas other recent vessel groundings have damaged upwards of 1,000 colonies, according to Charlie Taylor, legal fellow for the DLNR’s Division of Aquatic Resources . The two species of coral that suffered damage are relatively common.

Nearly half an acre of rock that hosts marine life was also damaged by the Nakoa yacht.

“If this event occurred on the Kona coast, we would be talking millions of dollars because there’s so much higher coral cover there compared to Honolua Bay,” explained DAR Administrator Brian Neilson.

DAR officials recommended that the BLNR fine the responsible parties $117,500 — a sum equal to the amount of the tentative settlement agreement between the state and yacht’s investors. The settlement does not preclude the state from seeking further damages from Jones and his charter company.

Several members of the public who spoke at the meeting expressed dismay with this small sum.

“A slap on the wrist would be a slap in the face of the community,” said West Maui environmental activist Kai Nishiki.

Although state investigators thoroughly probed the toll of the yacht crash on the reef, several board members noted a lack of accounting of the crash’s impact on Hawaiian customs and traditions and public recreation.

“I personally struggle with the fact that there is no abacus or calculator to even begin to quantify how much adverse effect to cultural resources this might have cost,” said BLNR member Wesley “Kaiwi” Yoon.

Chang also noted that the public was barred from accessing the bay for weeks in the aftermath of the yacht crash. The vessel remained stuck on the rocky coastline in extremely shallow water for almost two weeks, until it was hauled away and sank on its way to Oahu .

Divers found that scars from the vessel stretched almost 250 feet into the deeper water. In that area, more than 100 coral colonies were affected, and damage to live rock covered nearly 2,099 square feet, according to a DLNR news release.

The agency has said it won’t hold the salvage company or tug company that pulled the boat off the reef responsible for any damage.

Salvage work begins on defueled luxury yacht at Honolua

kanaloa yacht wreck

After the 94-foot-long vessel, Nakoa, was defueled, officials waited for high tides Sunday to remove the yacht off the rocks and coral reef. DLNR photos

The Maui News

Work to salvage a 120-ton luxury yacht began Sunday after the vessel, Nakoa, was defueled Saturday at its grounding spot just outside the Honolua-Mokuleia Marine Life Conservation District.

After six days, the U.S. Coast Guard assumed responsibility for the operation to remove an estimated 470 gallons of petroleum products, other hazardous substances and 14 marine batteries off the yacht, according to a news release.

The Coast Guard retained Sea Engineering Inc. of Honolulu as the contractor for the fuel removal work. Sea Engineering hired Maui-based Pacific Helicopters Hawaii to fly 55-gallon drums of fuel from the boat’s stern to a staging area near the top of Lipoa Point, where they were transported by truck for disposal.

“Folks on deck pumped any fuel, oils, and other materials out of tanks and machinery spaces into the barrels, where they were airlifted to land to be hauled off for proper disposal,” Chief David Jones of the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu said in a news release.

After six days, the U.S. Coast Guard remove an estimated 470 gallons of petroleum products, other hazardous substances, and 14 marine batteries off the luxury yacht on Saturday just outside the Honolua-Mokuleia Marine Life Conservation District.

Jones and other officials said that safe defueling is a “complex operation that takes time.”

Sea Engineering President Andrew Rocheleau said the time to defuel the luxury yacht took longer because the vessel is leaning to one side at the shoreline, so fuel moved into baffles within the boat’s 2,400-gallon tank.

“It took additional time to get into each of those compartments and either pump diesel out or use absorbent pads to soak it up,” Rocheleau said.

Many folks on Maui have expressed concern and frustration about how long it has taken to remove the 94-foot-long vessel off the pristine nearshore rocks and coral reef.

Rocheleau said he understood, but noted that even before the Coast Guard and the DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation were notified that the vessel’s owner couldn’t pay for defueling or salvaging, discussions and planning were already underway between the agencies and contractors.

“It takes time, as you have to assess risk to personnel, planning for safe helicopter operations, procurement, and being sure that all government rules, regulations, and laws are followed,” he said.

Now that defueling is finished, the vessel is under the control of DOBOR, which will be relying on high tides to pull the yacht out.

“It is our hope that first pull will free the boat and allow the salvage company to pull it out into deeper ocean water,” DOBOR Administrator Ed Underwood said in a news release Sunday.

Maui state Rep. Elle Cochran, whose district includes West Maui, discussed the possibility of having a publicly or privately owned salvage firm on Maui full time to reduce response time delays, but DLNR First Deputy Laura Kaakua said “that’s a big issue.”

“When these things happen, especially with a vessel the size of the Nakoa, there are no local resources available to mount a speedy salvage,” Kaakua said.

The dirt road leading into a viewing area at Lipoa Point will remain closed during the salvage operations.

In a screen shot from the GPS tracking website Felixlive.com, the Kanaloa's location is seen at 8 a.m. Wednesday, about 24 miles off the coast of Carlsbad aboard a tugboat that picked it up after the model boat was hit by an oil tanker about 6 a.m. The Kanaloa had traveled a total of 31.6 miles since its launch from Capistrano Beach on Monday afternoon.

ROP instructor Malcolm Wilson and student project leader Maurice Bollhorn, 16, carry the Kanaloa into the water on Monday afternoon at Capistrano Beach. The Kanaloa, sporting an orca-inspired paint job, took off on a southwesterly course that Wilson's students hoped would lead to Hawaii. Instead, the boat was struck by an oil taker Wednesday morning, Wilson said.

A 7-foot-long model boat launched Monday by a Regional Occupational Program class on its second attempt to sail for Hawaii was struck by an oil tanker Wednesday morning off the coast of San Diego County, according to the class instructor.

The Kanaloa, a 92-pound, twin-masted monohull, was recovered by the captain of a tugboat that had been escorting the cargo ship, said Malcolm Wilson, who teaches Capistrano-Laguna Beach ROP model-making classes at San Clemente High School.

Wilson said the captain called him about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, using contact information stored on the model boat. The Kanaloa was hit about a half-hour earlier, Wilson said.

At 8 a.m., the Kanaloa’s onboard GPS device transmitted its location aboard the tugboat as 24 miles off the coast of Carlsbad and heading north.

Wilson plans to meet the tugboat in Long Beach on Wednesday to retrieve the small sailboat, which the tugboat captain said has a damaged jib and mast but is otherwise intact.

The Kanaloa, named after the Hawaiian sea god, was originally launched June 12 from Capistrano Beach along with two other model boats the ROP class designed to sail as far as the Hawaiian Islands. But all three ran aground shortly afterward in San Diego County.

Wilson and student project leader Maurice Bollhorn, 16, a junior at Tesoro High School, relaunched the Kanaloa on Monday afternoon.

One of the other model boats, the 6-foot, 30-pound trimaran Team America, was relaunched June 27 but ended up in San Diego on Friday after being picked up by a commercial fishing boat 30 miles southeast of San Clemente Island.

The third boat, the 6-foot, 60-pound monohull Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, has not been relaunched since running ashore June 13 on the beach at Camp Pendleton.

1 dead after 3-car crash in Voorhees, New Jersey

Officers say the Honda driver was later pronounced dead at the scene.

6abc Digital Staff Image

VOORHEES, New Jersey (WPVI) -- One person is dead after a three-car crash in Camden County on Friday night.

Officers were called to Haddonfield-Berlin Road near Lafayette Avenue in Voorhees, New Jersey just after 10 p.m.

Investigators say a 2008 Honda operated by a 21-year-old from Berlin, New Jersey, was traveling down Haddonfield-Berlin Road at a high rate of speed when it struck a 2024 Lexus SUV, which was being driven by a 53-year-old from Atco.

After striking the Lexus, the Honda crossed the double-yellow lines and hit a 2016 Chevy Traverse, according to police.

The Chevy was being driven by a 41-year-old from Voorhees.

Officers say the Honda driver was later pronounced dead at the scene. There is no word yet on the driver's identity.

The Lexus driver did not report any injuries from the crash and the Chevy driver was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

Voorhees Police and the Camden County Prosecutors Office are investigating the crash. Anyone with information related to this crash should call Voorhees police at 856-428-5400.

3 reasons the stock market could tumble 10%, according to an increasingly nervous analyst

  • There are three reasons the stock market looks like it will tumble at least 10%, Peter Tchir from Academy Securities said.
  • Rising bond yields, sticky inflation, and a weakening US consumer have made him "increasingly nervous."
  • "Instead of thinking about a 5% to 10% pullback in stocks, I'm much more concerned about a 10% or higher pullback along with 10-year yields breaking through 4.5%."

Insider Today

One market expert is getting pretty worried about a big pullback in stocks. According to Peter Tchir, strategist at Academy Securities, US stocks are looking more and more like they could plunge by at least 10%.

"Instead of thinking about a 5% to 10% pullback in stocks, I'm much more concerned about a 10% or higher pullback along with 10-year yields breaking through 4.5%," Tchir wrote in a note on Sunday.

There are 3 reasons why he is "increasingly nervous."

First, he says, look at (1) bond yields . Yields on the 10-year Treasury have crawled up to 4.33%, and they look like they may continue to climb from here, Tchir said. In fact, the bond market could see a repeat of last fall when it suffered a  historic crash.

"I've been expecting to see another march to higher yields like we saw last fall," Tchir wrote. "The 10-year yield moved higher each and every day last week – a sign of things to come?"

The last time the 10-year yield hit this level was in February, and it was followed by a rally in bonds. But the picture is changing, with the Fed looking increasingly hawkish on rate cuts. Whispers of no rate cuts — and even rate hikes — have crept onto Wall Street after inflation has proven  stickier than expected.

Which takes us to Tchir's second reason:  (2) inflation . To him, it's clear that inflation has remained stubbornly high. And it could remain a problem as geopolitical risks — from no end in sight to the Ukraine war, and a likely involvement of Iran in the Middle East conflict — are likely to keep energy prices high, propping up inflation.

Then there's the (3) US consumer . So far, they've been behaving like "zombies," continuously coming back to life, Tchir said. But that's about to change as they begin to buckle under the weight of rising debt and a cooling job market.

Those risks call for a "DEFCON 2 level of bearishness," he said.

"While I don't see 'stagflation as a risk,' I think we are entering a period where we could see higher yields coupled with a weakening economy and a Fed that is handcuffed by persistent inflation," he wrote. "Not a good mix."
